Babughat Kolkata Timings

The most popular ghat along the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, among several ghats built during the British era is the Babughat. It is named after Late Babu Raj Chandra Das. The ghat is particularly famous for the history attached to it and due to its impressive colonial structure. The ghat is frequented by locals (especially office goers) and tourists alike who wish to spend some leisure time after a day’s hard work.

The view of the holy Ganges from the ghat is absolutely mesmerizing with the Howrah bridge , famously called as Rabindra Setu by the local population at one side and the newer Vidyasagar Setu on the other side. The sunset view from here is incredible.

The ghat is regularly used for bathing, performing religious ceremonies which also include idol immersion after every festival, be it Durga Pooja or Saraswati Pooja. It is also famous for open air body massage and leisure, attracting crowds from early morning till late evening. The landing berth of the ghat, which is a huge colonial structure, has fallen prey to encroachment by the priests and vendors who have made the building their home.

Between Kolkata and Dakshineshwar, there are, in all, 80 ghats built on both sides of the Hooghly River. Among the religious ceremonies that are carried out on the Babughat, the post-death rituals are most common wherein one can witness quite mixed emotions running in the atmosphere with chanting of the priests to family members seeking salvation for their loved one.

The ghat was built in 1830 by Rani Rashmoni, the wife of Babu Raj Chandra Das, who was the zamindar of Jan Bazar. The scenes at the Babughat are till date, very similar to the Calcutta that once was, far away from the showbiz of the new city.

Architecture of Babughat

The ghat is adorned by a tall and grand pavilion at the entrance, a colonial structure built in Doric-Gothic architectural style that has huge decrepit pillars, typical to that form of architecture. This structure serves as the landing berth of the ghat. There are stairs from the pavilion that lead to the river, which are mostly dilapidated and in various stages of being decayed.

There is a smaller section at the ghat which was made specifically as a designated bathing place for women alone which, however, has now sadly turned into a garbage dumping site.

There is a marble tablet or plaque beneath the pediment that states that Lord William Cavendish Bentick, the Governor General must be given a certain amount of credit for encouraging the construction of the ghat as an act towards improving public facilities. It also mentions that since the construction of the ghat was commissioned by the wife of Late Babu Raj Chandra Das, from her own personal expense, the ghat be named Babu Raj Chandra Das Ghat.

History of Babughat

Built in the year 1830, Babughat is the second oldest ghat of Calcutta. The ghat was commissioned by the then prominent zamindar of Jan Bazar, a prominent area in Central Calcutta, Rani Rashmoni in memory of her late husband, Late Babu Raj Chandra Das and hence the name.

Rani Rashmoni had erected the ghat with the intent to provide better facilities for the public and a better and cleaner place to carry out everyday rituals including bathing, offering prayers and religious ceremonies. Rani Rashmoni is known to have been the beacon of social reform initiatives of her time.

It is believed that it was the then Governor General, Lord William Cavendish Bentick who had encouraged the expenditure on building the ghat that allowed Rani Rashmoni to go ahead with her plan. The ghat, today, is 192 years old and has stood witness to numerous reforms ever since.

Riverfront Park at Babughat

This is more a promenade than park and offers the most beautiful view of Kolkata, which is, both famous bridges, Rabindra Setu and the Vidyasagar Setu in one single frame flanked opposite each other, on the Hooghly River. Come here during the sunset and you would fall in love with the place.

Ferry services at Babughat

The locals often use the ferry services to reach to the other side of the bank thereby avoiding the peak hour traffic rush on the road. The ferry rides across the Hooghly are exceptionally cheap and affordable along with the advantage of timely services. The ferries are spacious, less crowded and if it is a double decker ship, you might as well enjoy the breezy ride.

There are private ferries available if you wish to arrange a floating party; however, this facility depends on the availability of a ship which can be confirmed at the ferry counters at the ghat. The ferry services of West Bengal are maintained by Inland Waterways Corporation and ferries from Babughat operate to Chandpal Ghat, Howrah, Telkal Ghat and Bally.

Street Food at Babughat

There are numerous food carts available around Babughat. The street food of Kolkata is to die for and one must try them whenever they visit Babughat too. The typical street food menu includes phuchka, jhaal muri, bhel puri, rolls (veg and non-veg), ghugni chaat, sandwiches, masala chana chaat, jhuri bhaja and fruit juices.

Entry Fee and Timings of Babughat

The Palladian style monument was designed by W. Fitzgerald. It is a favorite place for city couples and poets. A number of social and cultural events also take place across the popular monument from time to time.

The Metro station for Princep Ghat is Esplanade. From the opposite of Oberoi Grand, you can board a minibus to reach the place in five minutes. The landmark is Netaji Indoor Stadium. You could also walk down from Oberoi Grand to All India Radio, then take a left turn by the stadium to reach here.

# 12 Indian Botanical Garden

Even with all its glory, the roads and rush of a metropolitan city like Kolkata can feel a bit tiring from time to time. Your ears deserve a rest from all the cacophony, and the lungs can soak in the fresh river breeze in the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanical Garden near the city.

Botanical Garden is actually across the river from Kolkata, located in Shibpur in the twin city of Kolkata, i.e. Howrah. The verdure paradise is spread over 109 hectares and it has a collection of over 12,000 species of plants and trees from across the world. The origin of the garden dates back to 1787, by Robert Kyd, an officer of the East India Company.

botanical-garden

Why a must-go tourist place in Kolkata?

Botanical Garden place housed commercial plants, spices, etc. back then. It also played a very important part of introducing tea plantation in India from China.  Even after facing a few years of negligence, the place now is well-maintained and boasts an amazing collection. The most famous one attraction this garden is the Banyan tree, which is known as the biggest one and the second largest canopy in the world.

The prop roots are so thick that you cannot find the main trunk and it looks like a mini-forest.  Among other exotic collections, there is a rare water lily,  Victoria Amazonica . The leaves are so big that it can hold a child easily while floating on the water. It is also a home of a number of resident and migratory birds, as well as butterflies.

Visit the place in the early morning for a morning stroll, or take your time and spend the whole day in here.  The sculptures here even are blended with green, and they can remind you of the Goddess of Life, Te Fiti from Moana. In recent times, there was another unique development with the changing climate.

The river salinity rose, and Mangrove returned to Kolkata naturally after centuries in the Hooghly River in here, with a Mangrove project for more than one-kilometer stretch. The place is open from sunrise to sunset and closed on public holidays. To go to the place, reach Howrah station from your location. You can find a number of buses starting from there to Indian Botanical Garden easily.

# 13 Behala Flying Club

Kolkata has a very good aerial connectivity with the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, but it has a lesser-known civil counterpart in the Behala region. The Behala Flying Club or BFC has a very bright future ahead as the Airports Authority of India is planning to convert to a fully functional airport soon.

The place, located at the southern fringe of Kolkata, also has a functional flying training institute.  If you wish to experience the bird’s-eye view of the city, take an early morning ride to the place in the cab, or come from the nearest metro stations i.e. Kalighat/ Rabindra Sarovar. Under private operators, Behala Flying Club offers helicopter ride over the city.

The joyride takes place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at 12 p.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. at a cost of INR 1700 per person. There are other special rides organized from this place also, like Malda and Gangasagar. Also, if you wish to see the Bay of Bengal from the city within an hour, there is the most popular ride to Digha.

The romantic joyride costs INR 2000 per person one way, and the flights are on Saturday generally. To see the sea as well as the aerial city view, you may have to plan and book in advance.

Kurseong

On a summer day, the fragrance of tea leaves lifts off the hills and hover over Darjeeling like a hat and the wonderful things breathes unsaid inside that, like the bent trees, the happy earthworms, the reluctant tea-colored puddles, flowering Rhododendrons and Magnolia plants and the wild garden flowers blooming in different colors of rainbow and a British bungalow growing a fragile façade of greenery for ages amidst a sprawling tea garden. The tourist places in Darjeeling will leave a traveler mesmerized and awed with the beauty that the place offers. And when the heavens’ open up to hammer the water down, the grass looks wet-green and pleased, loose earth shapes off its edges, the washed off dust-green trees smiles afresh and the green countryside glitters in the traces of sunshine.Covered with the dense evergreen forests of Sal and Oak, with ducks and teals creating waves in water, and with rare breeds of orchid spreading colors on a moist soil, Darjeeling, a previous summer capital of India under the British Raj holds the incredible panoramic views of Kanchenjunga snow peaks, beautiful colonial architecture including mansions and churches, an influence of diverse cultures in the majestic craft and cuisine, a beautiful women, the taker of the seeds with a yellow scarf on her head and tea-bag on her shoulders, and a vast expanse of Tea estates in its root. This “Mecca of Tea” with over 80 operational tea gardens spread across acres of land, writes on a foggy day sitting inside a vintage Toy Train from 1880s, a whimsical poem, of what is delightfully read as the "Champagne of tea". The northwest winds visit Darjeeling to tear it full of holes but the new beautiful things come in the first spit of spring on the northwest wind, and the old leaves go, not one lasts but the beauty stays with the new and lasts for eternity. Darjeeling is a beauty that won’t let your heart stop, from beating in ecstasy, and the tourist places in Darjeeling shall always ensure that!

tourist places near babughat kolkata

Babughat is located in the Downtown Kolkata near Esplanade metro station. Babughat is a evening hangout place for couples and family's. People can reach this place using a circular rail or by bus. This place is beautifully decorated and illuminated.

Babughat, Baje Kadamtala Ghat, Baboo Raj Chandra Ghat is one of the many ghats built during British Raj, along the river bank of Hooghly on its bank on Strand Road at Kolkata side. The bus stand of babughat is the filthiest place on earth. It is the most dirty place I have ever seen and is due to the illegal hawkers that occupy the stretch and make the place dirty and polluted. The administration don't seem to take care of it due to reasons unknown. Anybody visiting Kolkata should come to see this or else the actual picture of Kolkata won't be clear

205 bus route: Places to visit around Babughat

A vast colonial tower serves as the landing berth for the ghat. The building has a Doric-Greek style and massive pillars. This ghat is one of many that the British Raj had constructed along the Hooghly River’s bank. It was formerly referred to as Baboo Raj Chandra (or “ghat”) and is now called Babughat. It is a beautiful place to roam around because of the natural fishing lakes, or bheris, the area’s main attractions. These lakes yield some of the greatest fish in West Bengal, and the sunset from here is terrific.

The best time to visit Babughat is in October, during the Durga Puja Festival. If you are near Babughat, be sure to check out these fantastic locations: Princep Ghat, Victoria Memorial, Fort William, Eden Garden, Howrah Bridge, the Indian Museum, Salt Lake Stadium, and Dakshineswar Kali Temple, among others. The peace and beautiful architecture are palpable.
