17 Attractions & Things to Do

1. enjoy your luxurious stateroom.

Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

It was my first time to go on a Royal Caribbean cruise & I was especially excited to check out the accommodations onboard.

I stayed in their balcony stateroom and it did not disappoint! The space was certainly big enough for my lonesome. I enjoyed restful sleep on the extra comfy bed plushed with luxurious crisp linens. The stateroom is designed for two people and it can accommodate up to four people thanks to the pull-out sofa bed.

All staterooms and suites are maintained by a stateroom attendant. The bed was pristinely made up every time I came into the room.

I loved the balcony & sitting area. It’s the perfect place to unwind after enjoying the many activities onboard and shore excursion tours. There’s in-room WiFi available, so you can stay connected while you’re on holiday.

Jamie's Italian - Quantum of the Seas

You can also dine at the specialty dining restaurants onboard (for a fee, in addition to the cruise fare). During the cruise, we tried Jamie’s Italian, the restaurant created celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. Whatever you can find in a Jamie’s Italian restaurant on land, the same product you can find on the ship. The main difference is that they charge a flat fee, which includes most of the items on the menu. You can try different dishes to your heart and stomach’s content!

Devinly Decadence — American Healthy Cooking.

4. Get Immersed in Starwater

Starwater show at Two70 - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Starwater is one of the best performance shows I’ve seen anywhere, on land and at sea! It’s one attraction you shouldn’t miss! I was left spellbound by the caliber of the talent plus the immersive high-tech visuals at the Two70 theatre.

I was completely mesmerized by the singing, dancing & choreography. Many of the numbers include aerial acrobatic feats, which was stunning to watch. Elevating the theatrics beyond anything I would have expected on a cruise is the animated backdrop, six Roboscreens and a panoramic Visarama projection screen displaying stunning digital imagery. The 12K high definition Visarama screen spans the entire back of the ship and is three decks high!

5. Relax at the Pool Areas and Sun Deck

Outdoor Pool Deck 14 - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

You can find Quantum of the Seas’ swimming pools on Deck 14. There’s a large outdoor pool surrounded by sun loungers where you can get a good tan. Beside it is the H2O Zone, a mini water park for kids.

A giant LED screen overlooks the outdoor pool. Fancy watching movies at night, under the stars?

I’m sure my fellow Asians would be happy to know there’s a covered pool area protected by a soaring glass roof and the adults-only Solarium with cascading pools reminiscent of a tropical stream. Four Jacuzzi-style hot-jetted tubs called Whirlpools are also found on the deck beside the outdoor and indoor pools.

6. Grab a Snack and Coffee at Two70°

Two70° deserves a special mention because it’s one of my favorite parts of the ship. I’ve already mentioned that it’s used as a theatre at night for the Starwater show. During the day, Two70° transforms into a beautiful space that’s part cafe, part bar, and part activity space. The Visarama screen is hidden away, revealing the giant floor-to-ceiling glass windows with magnificent 270-degree sea views.

Two70 - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

The adjacent Cafe Two70 (complimentary) serves breakfast and lunch. Two70° is THE place to enjoy coffee and food with a scenic ambiance.

7. See the View from North Star

The North Star is one of the iconic features of the ship that’s easy to spot. Like a unicorn’s horn, the crane-like structure can be found soaring on top of the ship. At the end is a glass capsule-shaped viewing pod that rises 300 feet above sea level and provides 360-degree views.

North Star - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

While the ship is in port, in cities like Hong Kong and Singapore where the downtown area is relatively near the cruise terminal, the North Star offers beautiful views overlooking the cityscape. While at sea, the North Star’s pod can be maneuvered out over the water providing a thrilling view.

8. Go Skydiving at Ripcord by iFly

Ripcord by iFly - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Ever wanted to know what’s it like to float on air? Well, you can have a go at RipCord by iFly and have your flying experience at seas. Quantum of the Seas is the first-ever ship to have a wind tunnel installed on a cruise ship. It was my first time to try a free-fall skydiving simulator. It was a lot of fun from suiting up to the actual flight, which lasted around “60 seconds.”

9. Hang Ten at FlowRider

FlowRider - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Found beside Ripcord by iFly is the surf simulator called FlowRider, another exciting feature that’s available on Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships. The FlowRider allows participants to catch artificially generated waves by “bodyboarding” (with a boogie board) or “flowboarding” (similar to surfing but with a smaller board).

10. Get Active

Fitness Gym - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

There are plenty of options onboard for those who want to stay fit during the cruise or simply want to do something active between rounds at the buffet. The fitness gym is complete with cardio machines, weight machines, and free weights. There’s even a dedicated space to do yoga. Best of all, the gym, which occupies almost the entire forward (front) part of Deck 16, offers amazing unobstructed sea views.

If you want to take in the view and sea breeze while running laps, you can even find a 553-meter running/jogging track on Deck 15.

The multi-purpose SeaPlex indoor sports and entertainment arena hosts different activities including soccer, basketball, volleyball and organized activities like dance classes.

11. Play Games

Seaplex bumper cars - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

The SeaPlex is also a great venue for games and fun activities. Here, you can find areas for foosball, table tennis, air hockey, the Xbox Live Lounge, and an arcade room. Bumper cars and rollerskating sessions are held at the SeaPlex. You can check the timings of all activities in the Cruise Compass (daily schedule planner).

12. See the Royal Theatre Shows

Royal Theater show - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Another good reason to check the Cruise Compass is the schedule of the evening shows at the Royal Theatre. I was impressed with all the entertaining shows that we watched! Like Starwater, the shows feature world-class performers and spectacular choreography thanks to Royal Caribbean’s own in-house production company.

13. Go Shopping

Royal Esplanade - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Head to the shops near the Royal Esplanade on Deck 4 and The Via on Deck 5 for your retail therapy session. Enjoy duty-free shopping & and a wide selection from health & wellness products, make-up, watches & eye-wear to art pieces.

14. Explore The Decks

Butterfly Wall at the Elevators (Lifts) - Quantum of the Seas by

With a total of 16 floors, the massive Quantum of the Seas offers lots of Instagramable photo opportunities. Here are some of my favorite spots:

Royal Esplanade

Bird’s eye view of the whitewater trailing behind the cruise ship — Open area at the aft (back) of Deck 14. Al-fresco area at the backmost part of Windjammer. Have your photographer go up the stairs for a stunning top-to-bottom angle.

Giant Magenta Bear — Deck 15, beside the rock climbing wall

The Via — In front of Jamie’s Italian and Tiffany & Co.

Butterfly Wall — Aft Elevator Lifts. A glass-bottom floor can be found at the stairs Deck 14-15.

Retro Van and Carpe Diem Wall — Deck 15 aft, along the running track

American Icon Grill

15. Have a Drink at the Bionic Bar

Bionic Bar - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Experience a high-tech bar at the Bionic Bar. Just enter your order on a tablet to get the robot bartender to prepare your drink!

16. Celebrate Your Special Day

Marcos' birthday dinner - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

The trip was very memorable not only because it was my first time to go on a Royal Caribbean cruise, but my birthday also happened to fall on the day while we at sea. Going on a cruise is one of the best ways to celebrate special occasions since you’ll be treated to a feast and lots of fun activities all day.

17. Experience the Shore Excursions

Marcos enjoying Vietnamese Phin Coffee, Hoi An

One of the main benefits of going on a cruise is getting to travel to different places in one trip. You can rest easy in your comfortable stateroom and wake up to a new adventure every day. The cruise itinerary typically alternates days at sea with a day docked at port, during which you can take a shore excursion and go about exploring.

Quantum Of The Seas Overview

The Quantum of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s showcase ship. Designed to WOW, Quantum of the Seas is on the cutting edge of cruising with features like the North Star, which is a capsule that takes passengers over the edge of the ship 300 feet above the water for 360-degree views of open ocean. Inside the ship passengers have the chance to experience never before seen spaces on a cruise ship, like the Seaplex, which is a multi-use area that will play host to bumper cars and a roller skating rink. Quantum of the Seas ’ Two70 is an expansive lounge that, with the help of digital screens and aerial performers, turns into an interactive performance space at night.

  • Passenger Capacity: 4,180 (double occupancy)
  • Year Built: 2014
  • Last Refurbished:  2019

Royal Caribbean's Ripcord Skydiving Simulator aboard Quantum of the Seas

  • Ripcord by iFLY Royal Caribbean has done it again. They’ve already created ice skating rinks onboard ten of their ships, and have the FlowRider surf simulator that allows you to surf while on the pool deck. Now, you can sky dive on the Quantum of the Seas. The skydiving is simulated and called Ripcord by iFLY. Essentially you gear up and enter a chamber that pushes air up causing you to float and experience the thrill of flying.

Royal Caribbean's North Star aboard Quantum of the Seas

  • North Star The North Star is an innovative feature that’s truly revolutionary. It’s a jewel shaped capsule surrounded by windows that is connected to the ship via an arm that takes the capsule over the edge of the ship. The North Star provides views unlike any other as it allows you to travel over the edge of your ship while sailing through the majestic Atlantic or soothing Caribbean Sea. This experience is not to be missed, and is especially magical at sunset.

Royal Caribbean's Two70 Theater onboard Quantum of the Seas

  • Two70 At the stern of the ship, you’ll find Two70, an inventive space where three decks are transformed into one lounge where the sun shines in through the windowed walls. By day this is a lounge with a gourmet marketplace. It has a library and space for enriching craft classes, demonstrations and lectures. At night the space becomes an entertainment venue with 100-inch LED video screens and aerialists putting on dazzling productions.

Sea... Vancouver

Quantum of the Seas , the first in the Quantum Class, originally sailed a few short cruises in 2014 to the Bahamas and the Caribbean from New York City. She then moved to a new homeport in Shanghai, China. During the pandemic, she sailed safely, with heavy restrictions and protocols in Singapore. She became a model to the cruise industry for her success. In 2022, she moved to Alaska and will sail from Seattle before moving to a new homeport in Brisbane, Australia. Read More

New innovations on the ship made her one of the most technologically advanced. Additional components of the Quantum of the Seas all debuted on this ship. The RipCord by iFly , the North Star, the Bionic Bar, WaveRider   and the SeaPlex sports and entertainment complex continue to entertain guests.

A large ship with plenty of open deck space, Quantum of the Seas is ideal for families. Even though the ship is large, the layout helps with navigation. Most of the restaurants and public areas are on Decks 3 and 4. Decks 15 and 16 are home to the more active options—Northstar, Seaplex, Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Area, the running track, Ripcord by iFly and WaveRider .

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

What to expect on board, staterooms & cabins.

The mix of cabins on Quantum of the Seas include interior, ocean view, balcony, jr. suites, and 2-bedroom suites. Some cabins are connected making this an ideal ship for families needing multiple cabins together. The interior staterooms with their virtual reality screen bring in real-time views to the occupants.

Suite guests can book in a variety of classes including Sea, Sky, Star and Royal Class. Sea Class is the entry level suite class and includes several perks. Climbing the class ladder adds more perks. The Sky Class includes concierge service and Star Class includes the services of a Royal Genie. At the top of the ladder are Royal Suites, the largest and most luxurious with the most included experiences on the ship.

Quantum of the Seas accommodates passengers with both mobility and dietary needs. Accessible cabins are limited, so booking early is recommended. Guests should contact their travel agent or Royal Caribbean to discuss their needs prior to boarding.

Food & Drink

Complimentary dining includes options at four different dining rooms. The main dining rooms have different décor, but basically share the same menu with the exception of a specialty dish from the particular restaurant. The seating is comfortable and well-spaced. Guests may choose from a fixed dining time at the same table every night or may opt for My Time dining. My Time dining allows for some flexibility in dining time.

Windjammer Marketplace is the large buffet, but there are also several other complimentary spots perfect for grabbing a bite in a casual setting. The Cafe@Two70 º , serves deli-style sandwiches and salads, Sorrento’s has pizza and other Italian treats and Cafe Esplanade has pastries. Noodle place. Dog House The Solarium Bistro serves three meals in a buffet setting. Dog House serves only hot dogs and fries. Noodles, tucked into a corner on the pool deck, focuses on Asian dishes, but also has American food.

Specialty restaurants come with a surcharge. The choices include Chef’s Table, Chops Grille, Izumi, Jamie’s Italian and Wonderland.  Most of the specialty restaurants are located on Deck 5. Royal Caribbean offers a few dining packages for specialty restaurants.

Aboard Quantum of the Seas, there are many bars, both indoors and outside. Some of the bars feature entertainment and are quite intimate. Others, like Bolero’s, are large. The themes of the bars vary–for instance, there is an English pub style bar and the robotic Bionic Bar where guests order their own drink that is made by a robotic machine. A wine bar is popular and there are several different types of tasting featured at the bars.

Beverage packages are optional for those wishing to have a more inclusive experience.

Entertainment

Unlike other Royal Caribbean ships, Quantum of the Seas has no large scale Broadway-style productions. The Theater hosts shows, like Sequins and Feathers and Goddess . Two70º is the venue for more experimental type shows. During the day, this large area functions as a gathering space with large windows across the back of the ship. In the evening, the windows get covered and the area transforms into a performance venue.

Other entertainment is found throughout the ship and at varying times of the day. Movies, trivia, game show events, comedians and musicians fill the days with entertainment.

The Sports Complex has ping pong tables, bumper cars at certain times, pickle ball, and the sky diving and surfing experiences. North Star rises far above the ship for great views of a destination. For a fee, guests may experience an extended North Star event, which consists of the pod going out beyond the ship rather than straight up.

Spa & Fitness

Vitality Spa and Fitness Center spans two decks with the spa treatment area on the lower deck and the fitness center above. Both complimentary and fee classes are offered in the fitness center. A running track is part of the fitness experience.

The spa offers a variety of treatments including medi-spa treatments. Vitality Cafe refreshes guests with healthful options. Special smoothies and protein shakes come with a surcharge.

Key cruising tips

Health & safety.

Royal Caribbean requires that guests be vaccinated and tested before sailings of six nights or longer; unvaccinated guests will need to test before all sailings.

Specific requirements can be found at the Healthy Sail Center. This is the best place to find current requirements as health protocols are subject to change

Crew are vaccinated and boosted when eligible.

The dress code is casual, but some guests do dress for dinner. There are options to have professional portraits taken and this seems popular on dressier nights. The daily newsletter indicates the suggested dress style for the day.

Junior Cruisers

Quantum of the Seas accommodates children in their Adventure Ocean program. Throughout the ship, there are plenty of fun activities for youngsters including bumper cars, sports courts, a rock climbing wall, arcades and pools.

Teenagers have their own private hangout areas and may come and go as they please. Younger children engage in all sorts of activities like science projects or scavenger hunts. The clubs are so much more than babysitting experiences.

Service on Quantum of the Seas is friendly and professional. Crew members seemed to genuinely care about the guests that they served.

Daily gratuities are added to the fare. Some guests give additional tips to those crew members who have gone above and beyond their duties.

Itineraries

Quantum of the Seas itinerary program is based on 4- and 5-day short Asia roundtrip cruises from Shanghai and Hong Kong . During her Inaugural season, Quantum operated on Caribbean voyages out of Bayonne (Cape Liberty) New Jersey.

During winter 2019-2020 (November through April) the Quantum ship was homeported in Singapore for a total of 34 itineraries to Penang Malaysia , Phuket Thailand and Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon Vietnam . This deployment increased the Royal Caribbean's passenger capacity in Singapore by 30%.

Starting on December 1, 2020, the homeported in Singapore Quantum OTS became RCI's ever-first ship in operation since the fleet pause on March 14. The season (later extended through February 2022/14 months) had scheduled only Cruises to Nowhere (2-3-4-night "Ocean Getaways"/roundtrips) available for Singapore residents only and with no call ports along the route. The liner's max passenger capacity (4819) was limited to just 1000.

During summer 2021 (May through September), RCI planned to deploy Quantum OTS in Alaska - joining there the fleetmate Ovation OTS . Both liners were scheduled to operate 7-night roundtrips from homeport Seattle WA (leaving on Mondays). RCI's Alaskan season 2021 also had itineraries planned for Radiance OTS and Serenade OTS - both homeported in Vancouver BC and Seward AK (7-night one-ways). However, in late-January, RCI canceled Quantum's Alaskan 2021 season (April 25 through October 14) and the ship remained in Southeast Asia. Ovation-Serenade-Radiance ships' Alaskan schedules remained unchanged.

Following Ovation OTS , Quantum OTS became the second RCI vessel deployed in Australia (season 2022-2023). Quantum's inaugural Australian season (Nov 1, 2022, thru April 12, 2023) was based on homeporting in Brisbane QLD , and 6- to 10-day roundtrips visiting NSW (Sydney), Tasmania (Hobart), Queensland (Airlie Beach, Yorkeys Knob, Willis Island), South Pacific island ports in New Caledonia and Vanuatu, as well as 2-night/3-day Samplers ( cruises to nowhere ).

In November 2025, Quantum OTS starts homeporting in Los Angeles (joining the fleetmate Navigator OTS ) to operate 3- to 6-day roundtrips to Baja Mexico. Quantum's 2025-2026 season (October 2 through April 21) grouped 11 different itineraries and a total of 44 departures out of LA. Cabo San Lucas is visited for a 2-day/overnight stay.

Quantum Of The Seas Wiki

On February 11, 2011, under “Project Sunshine”, the shipowner RCCL announced the order of a new vessel. It represents a new passenger ship class of all three units, the first of which (Quantum) was delivered in 2014. On February 29, 2012, RCCL announced the order of the second “Sunshine” ship – Anthem (launched in 2015).

On January 31, 2013, the new vessel class was officially named “Quantum Class”. On this day were also officially announced the names of the first two vessels – Quantum and the Anthem OTS. The third vessel of this class (Ovation) was scheduled for launch in April 2016.

Quantum OTS is Royal Caribbean's first Quantum-class vessel, with "WOW" sisterships Anthem of the Seas  (2015) and Ovation of the Seas  (2016). There is a possibility the RCCL cruise company to order a fourth Quantum-class ship, as such an option was included in the contract.

Ship's godmother is Kristin Dawn Chenoweth (1968-bornUS actress and singer). It was delivered to RCI on October 28, 2014. Quantum OTS was initially homeported at Bayonne's Port Cape Liberty (New Jersey) . The Inaugural Cruise (maiden voyage) was on November 2, 2014. The itinerary was a Transatlantic crossing from the UK to USA (Southampton to NYC / Bayonne NJ). In 2016, Quantum was homeported in Shanghai China  for roundtrips to ports in Japan and South Korea,

Quantum OTS refurbishment 2019 review

The ship's first  drydock refurbishment  was in 2019 (October 19 - November 16) done in  Singapore  (at Sembcorp Marine Shipyard). The USD 65 million drydocking project included general maintenance works, technical overhauls, refreshed interiors and new attractions. Deckplan changes include adding two new team gaming experiences - a Laser Tag and an Escape Room.

  • vessel width: 162 ft (49 m), waterline width 136 ft (41 m)
  • virtual balcony's LED screen is 80-inch 4K (ultra high-definition)
  • jogging track length 436 ft (133 m)
  • North Star's height is 300 ft (92 m) and turns every 15 min.
  • SeaPlex' bumper cars are 15
  • On each voyage, the ship is loaded with fresh fruit (25 tons), fresh vegetables (36 tons), fish (10 tons), eggs (79,000), still water (22,200 L), sparkling water (12,000 L).
  • In the vessel's construction were used 37,000 tons of steel, 346 tons of glass. It took 41,600 man hours to build it.
  • Engines/power: two Wartsila diesel (type 12V46F, power output 14400 kW each), two Wartsila diesel (type 16V46F, power output 19200 kW each), two Caterpillar engines (type 3516C HD (power output 2500 kW each)
  • Diesel-electric propulsion: two ABB thrusters (type Azipod XO, power output 20,5 MW each), plus four Brunvoll bow thrusters (type FU115, power output 3500 kW each)
  • A signature feature of the vessel is the top-deck located giant Polar Bear statue (named Felicia).

All Quantum-class liners don't have the top-deck Viking Crown observation lounge and the ice skating rink. There are also differences in the Royal Promenade (shopping mall area). Entertainment options are brand new, with many "firsts at sea" present in the line's brochures.

The list of ship's revolutionary new (WOW) features includes:

  • "virtual balcony cabins" - all the Inside cabins feature a floor-ceiling 80-inch HDTV screen (203-cm) for real-time views (live camera feed showing the passing scenery). All Quantum cabins are ~9% larger than on Oasis-class ships.
  • Bionic Bar (capacity 2 drinks per minute) uses 2 robotic arms to prepare mixed beverages (muddled, stirred, shaken and strained). Those can be ordered via an app (tablets or smartphones). Orders are displayed on large LED screens around the bar. The robotic bartenders use 30 different spirits and 21 mixers (8 sodas, 6 juices, 3 syrups, sugar, mint, limes, lemons).
  • Two70° (located decks 5-7 stern, 3-story-high with a 270° panoramic view) - this lounge includes a cafe, an ice bar, at night it becomes a venue for nouveau-cirque-style production and a disco club.
  • SeaPlex complex (deck 15 mid) - full-size basketball court, a roller-skating sports arena, bumper cars, table tennis, "food truck" (casual dining).
  • "RipCord by iFLY" - it's the RCCL's new skydiving simulator (reservations to be made online prior to sailing).
  • "NorthStar" - the sensational and absolutely complimentary observation tower (forward of the top deck) - a glass-walled capsule on a long rotating arm will lift small groups of passengers over the ship's edge (up to 300ft/91m above sea level).

Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas Cabins and Suites

quantum of the seas cruise ship video tour

 Tripsavvy / Linda Garrison

The Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas cruise ship has 2,090 cabins and suites. The categories include 1,571 with balconies, 148 ocean view, 375 inside with virtual balconies, and 34 wheelchair accessible. Families enjoy the 16 family-connected staterooms, while solo travelers love the 12 studio staterooms with balconies or the 12 studio interior ones.

The cabins and suites on the Quantum of the Seas are very similar to her sister ship the Anthem of the Seas .

All of the cabins on the ship have a private bathroom with shower, and some also have a bath tub. All cabins are accessible using the ship's high-tech RFID WOWband wristbands. No more digging in your pocket or bag for the room key; you just hold the wristband in front of the lock and it opens. Nice feature, and it's also used to make purchases on the ship.

Let's take a detailed tour of some of the different cabin and suite categories on the Quantum of the Seas.

Superior Ocean View Cabin with Balcony

The superior ocean view cabins with a balcony on the Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas cruise ship are 198 square feet with a 55 square foot balcony. This cabin is slightly larger than the same category on some of the other ships in the fleet, except for the Anthem of the Seas, which is the Quantum's sister ship. For example, the superior ocean view with balcony on the Oasis of the Seas is 182 square feet, and the same category on the Jewel of the Seas is 189 square feet.

In addition to a private balcony with a great view, the superior ocean view cabins on the Quantum of the Seas  have a sitting and vanity area, private bathroom with shower, and two nice closets that flank each side of the bed.

Interior Cabin

Each of the 375 inside cabins on the Quantum of the Seas have a virtual balcony. What's a virtual balcony? It's a video of the view from the cabin if it had a balcony. This high-definition screen spans nearly floor to ceiling and provides real-time views of the ocean and destinations. The cabin in this photo measures 166 square feet, but some of the interior cabins are larger. The virtual balcony can be seen on the left side of the photo. It provides a real-time look at the same view a balcony would have. In this case, it's a view of the sea, but at other times it would be the port of call.

Ocean View Cabin

Measuring 182 square feet, ocean view cabins are slightly smaller in size than balcony cabins, and have a large window rather than a balcony. The Quantum of the Seas has 148 ocean view cabins.

Superior Ocean View Cabin

The Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas has 8 cabins in category F, superior ocean view. These cabins are larger than other ocean view cabins, measuring 302 square feet. They also feature a large picture window with a spectacular forward-facing view. A lounge chair nearby makes the view even better.

Super Studio Ocean View with Balcony

The 12 cabins in category SB of the Quantum of the Seas are the super studio ocean view with balcony. They measure only 119 square feet, but have a balcony with 55 square feet. These are a new cabin category for Royal Caribbean and are perfect for a solo traveler, although the bed is large enough for two. Solo travelers will not have to pay the single supplement for this category, and the bathroom and bed are the same size as in a standard double cabin.

Sky Loft Suite with Balcony

The Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas has 3 sky loft suites with balcony in category SL. This large suite measures between 673 to 740 square feet, depending on the location. The balcony is 183 square feet and is large enough for a dining area. The suite has space on two decks and great views from the two-deck panoramic window. The lower deck has a seating area, full bath with shower, and dining area. The upper deck is reached via the stairway and has a loft bedroom with king or twin beds and a full bath with shower.

Royal Family Suite with Balcony

The Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas has 4 suites in the royal family suite with balcony, category FS. These family suites sleep up to 8 people, measure 543 square feet, and have a balcony with 259 square feet. The suite has two bedrooms and two full baths, making it perfect for a family group.

Quantum of the Seas Family Junior Suite with Balcony

Smaller family groups of 4 or 5 can enjoy staying in a family junior suite with balcony (category FJ) on the Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas. The ship has 28 of these suites, and they measure 301 square feet, with an 81 square foot balcony. The suite has a separate bedroom with either a king or twin beds, a sitting area with a sofa bed, and both a full bath with a tub and a half bath.

Superior Grand Suite with Balcony

The Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas superior grand suite with balcony sleeps up to 4 and measures 351 square feet, with a 259 square foot balcony. The suite has a separate bedroom, separate dressing area, a full bathroom with tub, and a second entrance that opens to the living room. The sofa in the living room converts to a double bed. The huge balcony wraps around a corner of the deck and has enough room for both a seating area and private outdoor dining.

Owner's Loft Suite with Balcony

There is only one owner's loft suite with balcony, category OL, on the Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas, but it's a gorgeous accommodation. It has 975 square feet spread over 2 decks, with the bedroom and a full bath with shower in the second deck loft. This sleeping deck space also has its own private balcony. On the main first level of the suite is a sitting area with a sofa bed, dining table, and a split full bath with a shower. The two-level panoramic window overlooking the large balcony on the main deck offers great views of the sea.

Spa Junior Suite with Balcony

The spa junior suite with balcony on the Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas measures 267 square feet, with an 81 square foot balcony. The bedroom area has either twin or king bed and the sitting area has a corner settee. The most distinctive feature of this spa suite is the split bath with a soaking tub and large separate shower with frosted glass that allows natural light in from the living area. The toilet and second sink are in a separate half bath.

The 11 Best Alaska Cruise Excursions in 2024

T he best Alaska cruise excursions can range from the thrilling to the serene. Passengers can fly on sleds led by huskies , ogle bald eagles and salmon-gobbling grizzlies , and soar over towering glaciers in a helicopter. And the best part? All these activities are planned for you as part of the cruise itinerary—as a way for travelers to sample the diverse wonders of The Last Frontier in one fell swoop.

Wildlife sightings may be the more popular Alaska cruise shore excursions, but travelers shouldn't overlook incredible opportunities to learn about the state’s Indigenous cultures , as well as culinary experiences centered around local delicacies such as fresh salmon, halibut, berries, and craft beer.

Just know that the real Alaska , teeming with natural beauty and wildlife, primarily lies away from crowded touristy ports. Soar by floatplane over the majestic Juneau Icefield, land in a river near Hole-in-the-Wall Glacier, and feast on fresh-caught wild salmon by a roaring fire at a 100-year-old lodge. Seven things you wouldn’t expect to find on a cruise ship

Ice bars, skydiving simulators and even a celebrity cat — cruise lines pull out all the creative stops when it comes to quirky additions at sea.

Kennels on board Queen Mary 2

G one are the days when deck quoits and ballroom classes were as lively as it got on a cruise. If technology and maritime law permit, the creativity of cruise lines today knows no bounds. Here are seven of the most bonkers things you’ll find on a cruise ship.

This article contains affiliate links that can earn us revenue

1. Skydiving simulator

The simulator is on four Royal Caribbean ships, including Quantum of the Seas

There’s something liberating about bobbing around in a vertical wind tunnel, arms and legs splayed out. Royal Caribbean packs in the entertainment on its big, glitzy ships, but the RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator has to be one of the wackiest — 60 seconds of pure adrenaline and understandably popular from as little as £24 a go, considerably less than you’d pay ashore. Just go easy on the photoshoot of your adventure, as there’s a tendency to drool when “flying” in a 120mph updraft. Details Seven nights’ full board on Anthem of the Seas from £899, departing Southampton on September 1 (royalcaribbean.com)

2. Underwater viewing lounge

Ponant’s Blue Eye underwater lounges are the stuff of Jules Verne. They’re 8ft under the water level, where sun-dappled light filters from above through two big eye-shaped windows. By day you can observe passing marine life, and at night 28 spotlights in the hull illuminate the underwater world. Hydrophones relay real sound, so listen out for whalesong. Take in the whole scene from the squashy white sofas, which lull you into a dreamy trance with their gentle vibration. Details Twelve nights’ all-inclusive on Le Dumont-d’Urville from £5,580, departing from Mahé, Seychelles, on January 19, 2025 (uk.ponant.com). Fly to Mahé

3. A kennel (with its own lamppost)

Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 is the only cruise ship on which you’re allowed to bring dogs and cats, which occupy the 24 plush kennels on deck 12 on the liner’s transatlantic crossings. The pampered pets are supervised by their own uniformed kennel master and enjoy all the trappings you might expect of luxury ocean travel, from turndown treats to chic logo wear. Owners can visit in a special lounge and walk their pets in an outdoor exercise area, complete with fire hydrant, for American dogs, and a lamppost for the Brits, taken from Cunard’s original Liverpool HQ. Book at least a year in advance. Details Seven nights’ full board from £649pp, departing Southampton on March 8, 2025 (cunard.com). Fly from New York

The Skyy Vodka Ice Bar on NCL cruise ships

The Skyy Vodka Ice Bar on NCL’s Norwegian Breakaway is a nod to the ice bars of Stockholm and Vegas so beloved of stags and hens. Everything from the bar stools to the glasses for your vodka shots are made of ice, the blue-white room, which is essentially a giant freezer maintained at a chilly minus 8C. You’re kitted out in a toasty cape before braving it — and once inside the £15 cover charge buys you two Skyy Vodka cocktails, such as an Ice Cold — vodka, Grand Marnier, orange juice and lemon. Details Five nights’ all-inclusive from £652, departing Miami on November 19 (ncl.com). Fly to Miami

5. Tattoo parlour

Virgin Voyages packs in the gimmicks in its quest to appeal to hipsters, and the Squid Ink tattoo parlour on its ships — in partnership with the ethical vegan brand World Famous Tattoo Ink — is just one example. Prices start from £119 for, say, a small anchor or octopus, extending into thousands of pounds for something more elaborate. You’ll find Squid Ink on all three of the line’s adult-only ships — best give it a miss after a few too many in the ship’s Loose Cannon pub, though. Details Seven nights’ full board from £1,095pp, departing Barcelona on August 4 (virginvoyages.com). Fly to Barcelona

6. Gin distillery

Salcombe Gin

Gin lovers should head straight for Anderson’s Bar on P&O Cruises’ Iona, where there’s a shiny copper still in a temperature-controlled, glass-enclosed room producing Marabelle, the line’s exclusive gin, in partnership with the Devon-based Salcombe Distilling Co. It was the first — and still the only — gin distillery on a cruise ship. As well as tasting the excellent Marabelle (which is also on sale in Iona’s duty-free shop), you can join a gin-blending class and create your own flavours. Details Seven nights’ full board from £649, departing Southampton on April 27 (pocruises.com)

7. A celebrity cat

Throughout the history of shipping, dogs, monkeys, cats and parrots have all served as captains’ companions. Celebrity Cruises’ Captain Kate McCue keeps the tradition alive with Bug Naked, her hairless elf sphynx cat, which lives with her on the bridge when she’s at the helm of Celebrity Beyond. While Captain McCue’s tales of life at sea have 3.6 million followers on TikTok, Bug is a social media star in her own right, with 70,000 followers on Instagram — you can join a bridge tour to meet both celebs. Details Eight nights’ full board from £1,035pp, departing Fort Lauderdale on August 24 (celebritycruises.com). Fly to Miami

The Top Things To Do Onboard Grandeur Of The Seas

This cruise ship makes it easy to fill sea days with fun onboard attractions.

By Amanda Mesa | Published on March 18, 2024

When it comes to putting together a wow-worthy vacation, I’m all about research, planning and pre-booking. I’m the kind of person who believes that being prepared can make a huge difference in your travels, helping you maximize every moment of your vacation while reducing the potential for hiccups along the journey. That said, even a type-A planner like me enjoys a break every once in a while. That’s when I turn to cruising.

As far as vacations go, cruises — in my opinion — require the least amount of planning and effort. Everything is pretty much taken care of for you, from the itinerary to the dining options onboard. You can even book excursions to fill every moment of your time onshore with organized, carefully curated fun.

One of my favorite cruise ships, hands down, is Grandeur of the Seas. The longest-sailing cruise ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet holds a special place in my heart. I love the history that surrounds this particular cruise ship. I also prefer the more intimate, laid-back vibe it offers compared to its much larger sister ships in the Oasis and Quantum Classes.

That said, don’t let its smaller size fool you. Grandeur of the Seas is kitted out with plenty of great onboard attractions and activities to fill all your sea days with new discoveries and opportunities to chill — including a 40-foot rock-climbing wall, a tranquil adults-only hideaway called the Solarium, epic pool parties and game shows and plenty more. Here are just some of the top things to do onboard.

1. Get An Insider’s Look At The Ship

9. Get Cozy In The Library & Card Room

10. Spend A Few Hours In The Ship’s Arcade

11. Discover A New Favorite Wine

Chefs Table Crab Wine Tasting

If you’re a wine lover, ask onboard about the ship’s wine tastings (or check your Cruise Compass). These free sampling events are held throughout sailings and feature a diverse array of vintages from iconic and lesser-known producers. You might even find some bottles that can only be purchased on Royal Caribbean sailings.

These are just some of my favorite things to do onboard Grandeur of the Seas. You can view an entire list of offerings , or if you’re ready to start planning an amazing cruise getaway on this Vision Class mainstay, browse a full lineup of dates and itineraries .
