Thoroughbred horse racing has long been a sport for the world’s elite. The horses are worth millions, the owners are worth billions, and getting an inside glimpse at this high flying world was reserved only for a select few—until now.

This year, the top horse racing families in Lexington, Kentucky decided to officially open their doors to the public, allowing visitors to walk their grounds, get close to champions like American Pharoah, and even visit a veterinary hospital for the animals.

“In the past, it’s been difficult to access these exclusive locations ,” Anne Sabatino Hardy, executive director of nonprofit Horse Country Inc., tells Condé Nast Traveler. “You used to have to try on your own by calling the farms directly to see if they would let you stop by. This is the first time the farm owners decided to come together to open their farms and create a structure to help visitors tour them.”

Horse Country offered their first tour in 2014, but will kick off the grand opening at the end of September, celebrating the official launch of their central booking website and the addition of 21 farms to the roster. Famous spots like Gainseway, the home to two-time champion sire Tapit, Darley at Jonabell, owned by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and Coolmore , where American Pharoah resides, will all be open to tourists.

"We need to do this to benefit the industry,” adds Hardy. “There was a generation skipped when it comes to thoroughbred racing and the fans are much older than compared to other sports. We and the farm owners are hoping that by offering an exclusive, interactive experience with the horses will inspire a new generation to get involved in the sport.”

To book, go on the website and choose from a variety of tours on different dates. Tickets for the 60 to 90-minute tours are $11 for children under 12, and $20 for adults. (No bundling discount is currently available.) As the program develops, the organizers hope to offer additional tiers of experiences, like having the owners themselves give tours of the grounds. Did we mention many of them are billionaires?

Coolmore & American Pharoah

Our trip to Lexington was part of a two week road trip. We initially had trouble getting tickets and Horse Farm Tours came through for us. This tour and seeing the "Great' American Pharoah was the highlight! The farm is spectacular and the guides were informative and accommodating. Our guide Ernie was a true gentleman and his background in the racing arena provided for good conversation. I hope to come back to Lexington and do another tour!!

Mr Ernie Flynn is the sweetest guy. Really enjoyed our Sunday morning tour with a former jockey and trainer. You can tell this Lexington native has a real love and knowledge of horses and horse racing.

Thanks for your great review. We are very lucky to have Ernie as one of our tour guides. He knows the business of the thoroughbred horse world and loves being a tour guide. Come back to see us when you can.

We took this tour on 10/18/16-- our tourguide, Ernie Flynn, did an excellent job. As a former jockey/trainer he added great insight and info to the presentation. We did the early tour and were able to see the horses exercise at Keenland racetrack first then proceeded to the horse farm tour. We really enjoyed the interaction with the horses at the working horse farms. We were not rushed, and were able to take our time to experience everything. Two thumbs up for an excellent job, definitely a highlight of our trip!!! Would recommend to anyone visiting Lexington!!

We are very lucky to have Ernie as one of our tour guides. Being a former jockey and trainer he knows the thoroughbred industry inside and out and the history of the farms and race track. He loves doing tours and showing the tourist our great city of Lexington and the horse world. Tell your friends that are coming this way to give us a call and go on tour.

This was a tour of the old, historic farm in Versailles where Triple Crown winner American Pharoah stands at stud. Our group of about 20 people was taken on a walking tour of the farm. As soon as the tour began, American Pharoah was brought out to greet us. He posed like a statue. Our tour guide invited each of us to have our photo taken with the champion. Then we walked through several of the large, stone barns where many well-known stallions are stabled, as well as the breeding shed. The grounds are spectacular with countless large, mature trees and flawless landscaping. It is the epitome of a beautiful Kentucky horse farm. Our guide was cordial, knowledgeable, and patient in answering questions he has probably heard hundreds of times. I will definitely visit again on my next trip to Lexington.

We took this tour on a Saturday morning. Our guide and driver, Sue, knows her Lexington horse history! We stopped in at Keeneland and a couple other horse farms. A little disappointed we didn't get to see more famous horses and farms, but overall it was a good tour!

Yes, Sue does a wonderful tour and she enjoys showing our tourist the beautiful thoroughbred horse farms. To see the famous horses and farms there is a special fee that you have to pay to get into those farms. We have to buy those tickets in advance. So several times a year they will be advertised on our web site. We are glad you had a good time, come back and see us.

Great tour by David. Very knowledgeable about the thoroughbred horse business.Great variety of sights. Got to be up close and personal with the horses. The Magdalene Training Farm and Keeneland Race Track visits were especially interesting.Good value.

Welcoming American Pharoah To His Permanent Kentucky Home

Welcoming American Pharoah To His Permanent Kentucky Home

(Note: The following post was originally published in Jan. 2016 and updated in Oct. 2017)

Earlier this month, just as the New Year was starting, American Pharoah blissfully celebrated his fourth birthday. American Pharoah wasn’t alone in celebrating since every Thoroughbred horse in the Northern Hemisphere shares the same birthday regardless on when they were actually born: January 1 st . But while all thoroughbreds age on the same day, absolutely none of them came close to having the year that American Pharoah did in 2015.

American Pharoah’s Career

Halloween Day of 2015 is one that most Kentuckians are likely going to remember for a very, very long time. It was just after 6:00 PM during the final event of the 13 separate races that make up the legendary Breeders’ Cup , when 50,155 spectators watched American Pharoah soar across the finish line. As jockey Victor Espinoza turned to give the finish line camera a knowing smile, history had been written in horse racing. American Pharoah became the very first stallion ever in history to…well, you know the rest. But the most interesting part of American Pharoah’s story is what the next chapter of his life has in store for the first Triple Crown winner since 1978.

Life at Ashford Stud Farm

In early November, Bob Baffert, who has earned his place on the Mt. Rushmore of horse trainers, walked American Pharoah one last time. Baffert slowly led the horse to the barn at the Ashford Stud Horse Farm with promises of frequent trips to visit this once in a life time thoroughbred. And, ever the amiable horse, Pharoah was eager to pose for photos next to his new home. After all, these are some nice digs and a fantastic set up! His days of traveling across the country, endless rigorous training, and more are now all behind him. Instead, he’s currently enjoying acres and acres of fenced in Bluegrass beauty. For the last two months, American Pharoah has been settling into his new, permanent Kentucky home.

The Ashford Stud farm, like many in the region, has extensive ties to both politics and bourbon. The farm, which has grown exponentially in size over the years, was first established as a cattle farm by Colonel Edmund Taylor. Taylor was the grandnephew of 12 th President Zachary Taylor and mayor of nearby Frankfort, Kentucky for 16 years. But Taylor is probably most well-known for opening the nearby Old Taylor Distillery in the 1880’s and his likeness adorns a brand of bourbon today . Over the last 40 years, some of the finest stallions in the world have called Ashford Stud home. Pharoah certainly won’t be lonely in his comfortable surroundings.

Nearby Horse Farm Tours

There are over 400 horse farms throughout the state and nearly 150 in nearby Fayette County. And if American Pharoah wants to take a day trip to visit his sire, 2009 Kentucky Derby runner-up Pioneerof the Nile, dear old dad lives just less than 15 minutes away. At his new home, he’ll join 12 other legendary and beautiful stallions that are currently studding. American Pharoah can trade glory stories about the first Saturday in May as he chews the hay with fellow Kentucky Derby Winners Fusaichi Pegasus (2000) and Thunder Gulch (1995).

The farm is a relatively easy destination to reach. Situated just a few miles south of I-64 and located smack dab between the towns of Versailles and Frankfort makes it in an ideal location for tourists. In fact, the backside of the farm is just a stone’s throw from the iconic Labrot and Graham Distillery, which has been home to Woodford Reserve bourbon since the mid 1990’s.

Visit American Pharoah

So, how do admirers from coast to coast go about getting up close and personal with the first grand slam champion? Opportunity to visit is limited and time is short before American Pharoah scheduled set to begin his breeding season in mid-February. Mint Julep Tours has partnered with our friends at The Kentucky Derby Museum for “American Pharoah – A Champions Tour.”

The day-long guided tour includes a trip to Churchill Downs where guests experience “The Greatest Race,” enjoy a Historic Walking Tour of the Churchill Downs racetrack, and a stop in The Finish Line Gift Shop featuring American Pharoah merchandise. Then it’s off to Coolmore’s Ashford Stud Farm for a day with horse racing legends past and present, including American Pharoah. No tours are currently available as of Oct. 2017. Call today to find out how you can schedule a private tour.

If you chose to embark on a tour out to Woodford County, there are a few things to keep in mind when touring Ashford Stud or any working horse farm. First, you should know that very few of the horse farms have opened their front gates to visitors in the same way that the Bourbon Distilleries have in recent years. A handful of farms offer regularly scheduled, public tours, but most tours are private and need to be set up well in advance. When visiting, photos are almost always welcome, but keep those hands to yourself.

Tips for Horse Farm Visits

A horse’s temperament can vary wildly from stallion to stallion. Nothing ruins a nice day in horse country liked being kicked or bitten. And don’t expect to saddle up, hop on and go for a ride; remember that it’s a working farm not the county fair. Another good rule of thumb is to dress for a day at the farm. Opt for comfy clothes and sturdy shoes; leave fashionable Derby day outfits behind. Finally, while the view is often worth the visit alone, many farms don’t exactly have state-of-the-art restrooms or much less a gift shop.

2016 marks the beginning of the next chapter of American Pharoah’s life. It is absolutely thrilling that this amazing horse is going to be right in our own Kentucky back yard welcoming visitors for years to come. American Pharoah has earned the mantle of an once-in-a-lifetime horse on the track and Mint Julep Tours is delighted for the opportunity to bring guests from around the country to show up and say, “Thanks for everything.”

Note that Ashford Stud does their best to let fans see American Pharoah and other champions, however, no guarantees can be made for any particular tour- shows are pending the health and welfare of the animals.

A special farm tour is getting lots of attention as American Pharoah's fans want to see the champion in his next chapter of life, at stud.

The tour is s a chance to get up close and personal to Derby history and the world's first Triple Crown winner in 37 years.

"It's been great! It's been wonderful! We have people coming from across the United States to see the Coolmore Farm to do the farm tour and also see American Pharoah," Anne Hardy said.

The expansive, serene, stretch of Greenland is the new home for an American Pharoah.

"When they come to visit, they really have a high quality experience and great interaction with the horse and farm, the agriculture, the story and the history," Hardy said.

Coolmore is one of the largest industries for breeding, offering top stallions for stud.

Right now American Pharoah's stud fee sits at $200,000 for every foal born.

"All of American Pharoah's fans have posted pictures and selfies. (I) kind of loving seeing what he's been up to as he's making the transition into his second career," Hardy said.

Fans who take the Coolmoore America tour in Versailles, Kentucky, will also have the opportunity to see other derby greats, like Fusaichi Pegasus and Thunder Gulch.

"We have a stallion roster of 14 stallions which include American Pharoah. So as part of our tour, it's focused on the stallion area," Scott Calder said.

Coolmore Carm has been named the home of champions. And owners can't deny that American Pharoah has sparked a new interest and excitement to their tours and the industry.

"He is certainly a special ambassador for the sport and a tremendous athlete. So people are always fascinated with that dominance and not to mention his very special personality," Hardy said.

WLKY’s Fred Cowgill describes his personality as that of an "old soul," one that loves to be around people. It's perfect for spectators.

"What he's done is hugely significant in all circles. It's gone over and above and the general public is very aware of what he achieved. It's not normal. He's a once-in-a-lifetime horse and that brings a whole new level of excitement I think," Calder said.

Tickets for adults are $20 and kids under 12 are $11.

But tours from late November  through Jan. 8 are already sold out.
