pirate school visit

Dan came to our school for a day to provide a memorable experience for Year 2's new project. He went over and above our expectations and covered a wide range of aspects of pirate life through games and objects. Highly recommended, extremely flexible for our needs, fantastic personality and a big smile! Thanks, Dan!

Captain Dan Tastic provided an engaging and memorable day for children and staff alike! It was a fantastic and engaging day for the children and brought the topic to life. There was a good balance of educational information and fun throughout; the children learned lots of facts about pirates, which the children could draw on for their work in lessons weeks after the visit. The pirate games were a highlight and one child said 'it was the best day of his life!'. The children could remember lots of information about the different types of ships, key facts and stories. I would recommend Captain Dan Tastic for anything swashbuckle and will definitely invite him back to visit our little pirates next year!

I booked Captain Dan for my 2s room and Nursery class to link in with our Pirate Topic. He managed the day well doing a range of activities with the children, including some fun facts and treasure map drawing. The children loved the interactive outdoor session best and are still talking about it several weeks later. A good day was had by all and I would definitely recommend him!

Captain Dan Tastic provided an incredible day long workshop for three classes (2 x Reception & 1 x Year One). With such a wide array of activities, props, stories, historical item and games the children were entirely mesmerized by the Captain! So much attention to detail and he made every child feel special, even leaving them with treasure of their own to keep. Will definitely be booking him again next year!

We had heard great things about Captain Dan Tastic's workshops, but he exceeded our wildest dreams! The way he was completely involved with the children on their level, they were 100% engaged throughout the whole day. They haven't stopped talking about him for weeks!

This was Captain Dan Tastic's first visit to our setting (and we're sure it won't be the last!)  Dan adapted very well to the small awkward space we had available for him to use.  He performed in front of a large group of 90 children and was very skilled at keeping them fully engaged throughout.  The children loved joining in with all the actions, and he included lots of movement to keep our physical learners very motivated.  The show was a great success, very entertaining and lots of fun.

We are looking forward to Captain Dan Tastic sailing into our setting again later this year!

Ahoy there Captain Dan! Dan came to our primary school last week to kick start our new topic of Pirates and he certainly got us off to a great start. The morning was spent finding out about a range of Pirate information. Dan is very knowledgeable on the subject and was fantastic at communicating with the children. He made them (and the teachers) laugh, showed them artifacts and got them completely involved. They were spellbound! In the afternoon we had all 60 children in the hall and Dan had no problems keeping them entertained with games, songs and stories. It was pretty mad at times and the children absolutely loved it. Many described it as 'the best day ever' and we got some fantastic writing about Pirates the following day. This is the second year that Dan has visited us, and we would definitely book again next year.

When the Whydah Gally was discovered in 1984 by Barry Clifford and his team, the world gained an unprecedented and invaluable resource to study the pirates of the “Golden Age”—one of the most secretive and, consequently, misunderstood societies of the colonial period.

The Whydah Pirate Museum and its affiliated facilities house the largest collection of pirate artifacts ever recovered from a single shipwreck. In addition to recovering and preserving these artifacts, the museum’s mission is to provide  educational content that not only engages and teaches students , but also passes on a story that is an important piece of local Cape Cod history.

We were pleasantly surprised and amazed at how wonderful this museum is! We found it while looking for fun things to do in the area- and that’s exactly what it was! A fun experience with lots of historical artifacts and information- it was so cool to read true pirate stories! If you’ve ever been interested in pirates, ships, etc- I 1000% recommend a stop by this awesome TREASURE ARRGGHH! Pricing is great and affordable, parking is easy, and staff super friendly and nice!

a drawing of a face

The Whydah Pirate Museum is a great experience for fans of history and pirate tales. Hundreds of artifacts have been cleaned and restored, giving a glimpse into pirate life of the 1700s. Exhibits are wonderfully displayed and interwoven with the real-life stories of those who sailed on the Whydah and survivors of the shipwreck. We left with a greater appreciation of Barry Clifford and his 40 years of intense effort in revealing the contents and story of the Whydah.

One of the best, most true-to-history pirate-related museums/exhibits. A great number of original artifacts are presented with detailed descriptions and in historical context. No effort has been made to glamorize the life of a pirate. This museum is definitely worth a visit. It is unlikely to take longer than 45 minutes to go through its exhibits, though, and smaller kids might get bored after about 20 minutes. It is also better to reserve ahead.

I love Pirate stories /movies and had heard about the Whydah on a tv documentary. Then I accidentally found out about this museum. Well, I had to go see it and absolutely glad I did! It is awesome! Real artifacts they have found from that ship, including a chest full of pirate treasure!!! It was very informative and interesting. There was a guy( dressed as a pirate) that went around and gave you specific info on any of the exhibits if you had questions. If you want to know about real pirates GO HERE!!

This was surprisingly excellent and a hidden gem. Very good layout, narrative and presentation. They’ve done excellent work here. Any history buff or pirate fan will love this place! It’s more museum than gimmick so probably geared toward older, reading/thinking children.

This museum has the only known real artifacts from the pirate ship Whydah, including silver coins and the ships bell. Very interesting how the ship was located and the delicate retrieval of items. if you are a pirate, come see this display!

The collection of pirate artifacts was absolutely stunning, and the museum itself a delight to walk through. I could have spent all day in the exhibits, and particularly enjoyed the display of how archeologists have been collecting and preserving the artifacts from the wreck of the Whydah. A great option for a rainy vacation day, or any day if you have a big pirate fan in the family. I'll definitely be coming back again the next time I'm in Cape Cod.

This place is amazing!!! Loved that we were able to speak with a member of the expedition team who went above and beyond answering all of our questions and provided us with so many interesting facts!

Dan Tastic Education visited our school and the children absolutely loved it! The facilitator was very knowledgeable, the props were amazing and the children (and staff) were engrossed! I would highly recommend it to anyone who is doing a pirate topic

We had Dan Tastic Education for our pirate day for all our Foundation Phase children. They were very accommodating to our requests. The children had an amazing day and so did the staff! They learnt so much and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We also had so many parents giving positive comments the next day after their children had told them all about their day. Would highly recommend.

Woodhouses VC Primary Failsworth, Manchester We welcomed Dan Tastic Education to Woodhouses this week and they had all our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2s hooked from the off! The children were engrossed in the amazing resources, information and activities and it really was the best finale for our pirate topic. We can not recommend Dan Tastic Education more highly and look forward to booking with them again!

We had Dan Tastic Education come and do an Egyptian day for our Year 4 class. It was fantastic! The use of artefacts and practical activities helped bring the history to life. Considering we are living through a pandemic, Dan was very conscientious and made sure the guidelines and our risk assessment was followed through! Fantastic day and would happily invite Dan Tastic Education back!

"Dan Tastic Education led a wonderful morning pirate workshop for my mixed KS1 class. The workshop really brought the topic alive for the children through his interesting anecdotes and artefacts, keeping them engrossed through out. Captain Dan Tastic obviously had a good knowledge of the NC - as many elements from history, geography and english were threaded through this fun workshop. Can't recommend enough!"

Where can I start, what an amazing day with Dan Tastic Education! The children and teachers were fully immersed from start to finish. There was no doubt that Captain Dan Tastic was a real pirate! An awe inspiring, jam packed, fun and imaginative day. The children learnt so many pirate facts and will treasure their special pirate ruby forever.

Thank you Captain Dan Tastic!

The children and adults really enjoyed your visit.  The children can remember all the facts that you told us, especially the price of the pineapple!  We have made pirate ships using logs in the woods, remembering that the sails need wind in order to move the ships forwards, they explained that we needed an anchor to stop the ship.  They also absolutely love and 'treasure' the piece of Ruby that you gave to them all.  We are going to try and make some 'Hard Tack' biscuits ... without the bugs of course!

Thanks again, it was really wonderful.

Captain Dan Tastic came to our school for a pirate workshop and we all, children and staff, absolutely loved the visit. Captain Dan kept the children engaged throughout. It was educational and full of fun. The children loved seeing the props and finding out lots of information. Highly recommended. Thank you Dan Tastic Education!

We loved having Captain Dan Tastic for our Reception pirate day. All 150 children had the best day, learning and laughing a lot with him. So cleverly done virtually too & the children were transfixed. Thank you so much we will definitely book Dan Tastic Education again.

Storytime: A Pirate Adventure

Join Dani for a story about pirates

When we talk about pirates, we often are thinking about the ' Golden Age of Piracy '. This period was in the 17th and 18th centuries, when there were more than 5000 pirates at sea.

Pirates were people who had, for many reasons, turned to a life of crime at sea. They attacked ships and even coastal towns and villages, in search of valuable items. It wasn't just gold and silver though! Pirates were often on the hunt for medicine, food and equipment for their ships!

We often think of pirates as daring people who swooped on treasure ships and returned home with golden cargoes, and tales of swashbuckling adventures.

Listen along to Storyteller Dani, as she tells us a story about pirates, inspired by the Tudor and Stuart Seafarers gallery at the National Maritime Museum .

10 Pirate-Themed Activities for the Classroom

Ahoy, me hearties! If you want to inject swashbuckling excitement into your classroom, there’s no better way than to embark on a pirate-themed adventure. Pirates have captured the imagination of both young and old for generations, making them a fantastic theme for engaging and educational activities. With Talk Like a Pirate Day coming up on September 19, this month is a wonderful time to explore the pirate theme. So, hoist the Jolly Roger, and let’s dive into some 10 pirate-themed activities that will have your students setting sail on an unforgettable learning voyage!

10 Exciting Pirate-Themed Activities for the Classroom

1. Pirate Vocabulary Challenge & Pirate Narrative Story

Since Talk Like a Pirate Day is all about using those daring pirate words, start your pirate-themed journey by introducing students to a list of pirate terms and phrases like “buccaneer,” “plunder,” and “matey.”

Create a word wall for visual reference. In our Pirate Writing Unit , we have Talk Like a Pirate Vocabulary cards perfect for this challenge. Students can utilize these Pirate Vocabulary cards in specific “Pirate Talk Time,” in which they can chat with their neighbors using the vocabulary words.

Challenge students to use these terms in sentences in an action-packed pirate narrative, like in our Pirate Writing Unit, to reinforce vocabulary, boost creativity, and write some splendid seafaring stories. This unit has everything you need from prewriting to publication, including a fun design-your-own-pirate craft and three pirate bulletin board options to display their work.

6. Pirate Playground Treasure Map

Pirates used maps all the time to navigate the high seas. Map skills are an important standard in geography. Teach students about the parts of a map such as a scale, compass, legend, and so on and so forth. Give students something they need to bury in the playground. Perhaps, a fake gold coin or a piece of treasure from the classroom treasure box. Next, students stay outdoors and create a map of where their treasure is buried. Bonus points on students drawing their maps on crinkled butcher paper or on vintage-looked stationery . Students exchange maps and try to find their partner’s buried treasure.

7. Pirate Craft & Fun Activities

Create little pirates out of your students with this Photo Fun Activity and then display them on a perfect pirate bulletin board with this resource. Additionally, students can enjoy the Create Your Own Pirate Hat craft, along with pirate coding sheets, word searches, and fun coloring sheets in the same resource.

If you have older students, you will love this one!

Be swift, for this prize won’t linger long!

8. Pirate Letter Writing

Practice letter-writing skills by having students craft a letter, pretending they’re a pirate. Perhaps their letter is all about where some buried treasure is located. Here are some more pirate letter ideas!

Pretend you’re a captain of a pirate ship who decided to set sail alone. Write a letter to your crew all about your latest adventures!

Pretend you’re a pirate’s parrot. Write a letter revealing all of the secrets you hear from your rowdy pirate owner.

You’re a pirate who is deserted on an island with a wrecked ship. Write a message that you’ll place in a bottle describing your location and, also,  begging for rescue.

Take it a step further and have students write their letters on fun vintage paper or soak their letters in coffee or tea to create a crinkly old message. Then, roll up the letter and slip it into an empty water bottle!

9. Treasure Scavenger Hunt

Pirate School: Sea Dreams

Pirate School: Sea Dreams is a madcap, swashbuckling solo show created and performed by veteran New York actor David Engel. Set to an original cartoon-inspired musical score, complete with sound effects, Pirate Professor Billy Bones teaches the finer points of lighthearted mischief and offers up zany lessons on how to stand, talk, sing and laugh like a boisterous buccaneer, all while promoting good manners, polite behavior and social courage.

Children have a natural fascination for adventure and the pirates’ life on the high seas. With eye-popping puppetry, eccentric props, and slapstick swordplay, Pirate School! is a riotous, interactive variety show suitable for ages four and up. Where else can you find a talking skull and the world’s only wearable pirate ship?

Note: Arrive for an arts and craft project  one hour before the show  to prepare for your adventure on the high seas!

David Seymour defends calling Jacinda Ardern authoritarian during pre-school visit

Watch: ACT leader David Seymour reads a book to pre-schoolers on Tuesday. Credits: Photo: RNZ / Video: Newshub

Story by RNZ

The government has announced changes to the early childhood education sector, which it says will make it easier for new centres to be set up.

ACT leader David Seymour has announced the moves at a Wellington ECE centre, where he read to children while sitting next to a book featuring Jacinda Ardern, before telling reporters the former prime minister was an authoritarian.

He has also signalled plans to introduce mandatory child abuse reporting, while noting the government has not yet made a firm decision on that fraught debate.

The changes will revoke legislative changes allowing the government to decide where early learning services should be, and requirements for ECE centres to have a highly-trained teacher in charge before being allowed to open.

Announcing the changes, Seymour - the Minister for Regulation and Associate Education - said the decision about where services should be located should lie with parents and providers.

"Any other business, the test of whether there's demand is 'do people come and give you their money in return for your services', not 'can you satisfy a government department that people might want to do that if you're allowed to open'.

"Ultimately you can't make someone open a centre, and you can't make a parent send their kid to a centre - all you can do with network approval is restrict centres from opening where the parents might have actually wanted one."

The governement is also cancelling a change that would have taken effect in August, requiring any ECE centre to have a more highly qualified teacher to be in charge to be permitted to open.

It would have meant at least one teacher with a Full Practising Certificate (category one or two) would need to be on site. Seymour said the current setting - requiring any registered teacher - would now remain.

"Theoretically you would have to close while that one person went to the bathroom, if that one person you might have was sick you would have to pay a very expensive reliever in order to open.

He said the government would also be doing a funding review, including of the pay parity rules "which are creating enormous cost and inflexibility for the sector".

He signalled the government could look to make child abuse reporting mandatory at ECEs - something many advocates have been calling for - but said it was  a "very difficult dilemma"  they would need to work through.

"I think we will, but that is something that will come into quite a wide sweep of review," he said. "If somebody hasn't reported then I think they've done a great neglect to that kid ... I'd just make the point that once you make it mandatory to report something you also put a lot of pressure on people to say 'if I tell anyone then it's going to be reported and I could end up getting retribution for reporting it'."

Ahead of his announcement at a centre in Wellington, Seymour read  Oi Frog!  to the children there. Another book, Taking the Lead: How Jacinda Ardern wowed the world  had been placed prominently alongside him.

Seymour would "absolutely" have read the Jacinda Ardern book to the children, but said " Oi Frog!  was a lot more entertaining and ironically  Oi Frog!  seemed to be a warning to children about authoritarian people that tell you what to do all the time.

"Maybe that's why they have the Jacinda book - for a similar purpose - who knows?"

He defended his characterisation of Ardern as authoritarian.

"I think the way that she used power through the Covid era was excessive, it didn't properly balance New Zealanders rights and their welfare and in some cases it actually was found to be illegal."

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, speaking to reporters in Singapore as part of his trip to Southeast Asia, said he did not agree with Seymour's characterisation.

"He's entitled to his views, I wouldn't describe it that way. I would say that we didn't get everything right in the Covid response and that's why we actually want quite a wide ranging [review] - with a broader set of terms of reference - to look into the Covid response at that time.

"It's important that we take the learnings from that as we go forward into any future events."

He repeated his position it was "quite okay" for the three coalition parties to have different views, and agreed when it was put to him some of Ardern's actions in closing the borders and imposing lockdowns had been authoritarian.

"Well, yes, but again I'd just say to you we're going to have a full review to to say what worked, what didn't work and what did we learn from it all."

Sector group and opposition respond

Early Childhood Council chief executive Simon Laube said the sector was "really really relieved" by the moves, as it was currently "incredibly difficult" to set up a new ECE centre.

"Adding about six months to an establishment period of about two-and-a-half years is hugely costly, but it was the lack of certainty that you had with that new step of the process," he said.

"That new step just means that you go through a whole lot of hoops, whole lot of cost, and you don't know if you're going to be able to get a licence at the end of it."

He said some of the safety regulations were just box-ticking exercises adding extra cost, and ECE centres in Wellington had closed despite high levels of demand with no new centres expected in the next few years.

But Labour's Education spokesperson Jan Tinetti said the changes to location requirements were "really disappointing".

"To get rid of it means that we have no idea where ECEs are going to be going up, and it means that it's inequitable because we don't get them into places where the needs are greatest ... this is something that parents wanted, we know that it was working really well in the first instance."

"Rural areas will be way more disadvantaged, low socio-economic areas will be way more disadvantaged."

She said some parts of the sector had backed the change because of the equity considerations, and reversing the higher-skilled teacher requirement would put children at risk.

Seymour said early childhood education centre managers had told him they were "actually fearful of calling the Ministry of Education or ERO because they're worried about what will happen if the inspectors come around ... to find something wrong that will cost".

While the legislation is repealed, Seymour is proposing to speed up granting approvals for new services by revoking the national statement on the network of licensed early childhood services. Consultation on this proposal is now open and runs until 5 May 2024.

Teen Girls Confront an Epidemic of Deepfake Nudes in Schools

Using artificial intelligence, middle and high school students have fabricated explicit images of female classmates and shared the doctored pictures.

Westfield Public Schools held a regular board meeting in late March at the local high school, a red brick complex in Westfield, N.J., with a scoreboard outside proudly welcoming visitors to the “Home of the Blue Devils” sports teams.

But it was not business as usual for Dorota Mani.

In October, some 10th-grade girls at Westfield High School — including Ms. Mani’s 14-year-old daughter, Francesca — alerted administrators that boys in their class had used artificial intelligence software to fabricate sexually explicit images of them and were circulating the faked pictures. Five months later, the Manis and other families say, the district has done little to publicly address the doctored images or update school policies to hinder exploitative A.I. use.

“It seems as though the Westfield High School administration and the district are engaging in a master class of making this incident vanish into thin air,” Ms. Mani, the founder of a local preschool, admonished board members during the meeting.

In a statement, the school district said it had opened an “immediate investigation” upon learning about the incident, had immediately notified and consulted with the police, and had provided group counseling to the sophomore class.

A blue sign on manicured grounds says, “Westfield High School.” In the background, a large, low brick building sits under a blue sky.

“All school districts are grappling with the challenges and impact of artificial intelligence and other technology available to students at any time and anywhere,” Raymond González, the superintendent of Westfield Public Schools, said in the statement.

Blindsided last year by the sudden popularity of A.I.-powered chatbots like ChatGPT, schools across the United States scurried to contain the text-generating bots in an effort to forestall student cheating. Now a more alarming A.I. image-generating phenomenon is shaking schools.

Boys in several states have used widely available “nudification” apps to pervert real, identifiable photos of their clothed female classmates, shown attending events like school proms, into graphic, convincing-looking images of the girls with exposed A.I.-generated breasts and genitalia. In some cases, boys shared the faked images in the school lunchroom, on the school bus or through group chats on platforms like Snapchat and Instagram, according to school and police reports.

Such digitally altered images — known as “deepfakes” or “deepnudes” — can have devastating consequences. Child sexual exploitation experts say the use of nonconsensual, A.I.-generated images to harass, humiliate and bully young women can harm their mental health, reputations and physical safety as well as pose risks to their college and career prospects. Last month, the Federal Bureau of Investigation warned that it is illegal to distribute computer-generated child sexual abuse material, including realistic-looking A.I.-generated images of identifiable minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct.

Yet the student use of exploitative A.I. apps in schools is so new that some districts seem less prepared to address it than others. That can make safeguards precarious for students.

“This phenomenon has come on very suddenly and may be catching a lot of school districts unprepared and unsure what to do,” said Riana Pfefferkorn , a research scholar at the Stanford Internet Observatory, who writes about legal issues related to computer-generated child sexual abuse imagery .

At Issaquah High School near Seattle last fall, a police detective investigating complaints from parents about explicit A.I.-generated images of their 14- and 15-year-old daughters asked an assistant principal why the school had not reported the incident to the police, according to a report from the Issaquah Police Department. The school official then asked “what was she supposed to report,” the police document said, prompting the detective to inform her that schools are required by law to report sexual abuse, including possible child sexual abuse material. The school subsequently reported the incident to Child Protective Services, the police report said. (The New York Times obtained the police report through a public-records request.)

In a statement, the Issaquah School District said it had talked with students, families and the police as part of its investigation into the deepfakes. The district also “ shared our empathy ,” the statement said, and provided support to students who were affected.

The statement added that the district had reported the “fake, artificial-intelligence-generated images to Child Protective Services out of an abundance of caution,” noting that “per our legal team, we are not required to report fake images to the police.”

At Beverly Vista Middle School in Beverly Hills, Calif., administrators contacted the police in February after learning that five boys had created and shared A.I.-generated explicit images of female classmates. Two weeks later, the school board approved the expulsion of five students, according to district documents . (The district said California’s education code prohibited it from confirming whether the expelled students were the students who had manufactured the images.)

Michael Bregy, superintendent of the Beverly Hills Unified School District, said he and other school leaders wanted to set a national precedent that schools must not permit pupils to create and circulate sexually explicit images of their peers.

“That’s extreme bullying when it comes to schools,” Dr. Bregy said, noting that the explicit images were “disturbing and violative” to girls and their families. “It’s something we will absolutely not tolerate here.”

Schools in the small, affluent communities of Beverly Hills and Westfield were among the first to publicly acknowledge deepfake incidents. The details of the cases — described in district communications with parents, school board meetings, legislative hearings and court filings — illustrate the variability of school responses.

The Westfield incident began last summer when a male high school student asked to friend a 15-year-old female classmate on Instagram who had a private account, according to a lawsuit against the boy and his parents brought by the young woman and her family. (The Manis said they are not involved with the lawsuit.)

After she accepted the request, the male student copied photos of her and several other female schoolmates from their social media accounts, court documents say. Then he used an A.I. app to fabricate sexually explicit, “fully identifiable” images of the girls and shared them with schoolmates via a Snapchat group, court documents say.

Westfield High began to investigate in late October. While administrators quietly took some boys aside to question them, Francesca Mani said, they called her and other 10th-grade girls who had been subjected to the deepfakes to the school office by announcing their names over the school intercom.

That week, Mary Asfendis, the principal of Westfield High, sent an email to parents alerting them to “a situation that resulted in widespread misinformation.” The email went on to describe the deepfakes as a “very serious incident.” It also said that, despite student concern about possible image-sharing, the school believed that “any created images have been deleted and are not being circulated.”

Dorota Mani said Westfield administrators had told her that the district suspended the male student accused of fabricating the images for one or two days.

Soon after, she and her daughter began publicly speaking out about the incident, urging school districts, state lawmakers and Congress to enact laws and policies specifically prohibiting explicit deepfakes.

“We have to start updating our school policy,” Francesca Mani, now 15, said in a recent interview. “Because if the school had A.I. policies, then students like me would have been protected.”

Parents including Dorota Mani also lodged harassment complaints with Westfield High last fall over the explicit images. During the March meeting, however, Ms. Mani told school board members that the high school had yet to provide parents with an official report on the incident.

Westfield Public Schools said it could not comment on any disciplinary actions for reasons of student confidentiality. In a statement, Dr. González, the superintendent, said the district was strengthening its efforts “by educating our students and establishing clear guidelines to ensure that these new technologies are used responsibly.”

Beverly Hills schools have taken a stauncher public stance.

When administrators learned in February that eighth-grade boys at Beverly Vista Middle School had created explicit images of 12- and 13-year-old female classmates, they quickly sent a message — subject line: “Appalling Misuse of Artificial Intelligence” — to all district parents, staff, and middle and high school students. The message urged community members to share information with the school to help ensure that students’ “disturbing and inappropriate” use of A.I. “stops immediately.”

It also warned that the district was prepared to institute severe punishment. “Any student found to be creating, disseminating, or in possession of AI-generated images of this nature will face disciplinary actions,” including a recommendation for expulsion, the message said.

Dr. Bregy, the superintendent, said schools and lawmakers needed to act quickly because the abuse of A.I. was making students feel unsafe in schools.

“You hear a lot about physical safety in schools,” he said. “But what you’re not hearing about is this invasion of students’ personal, emotional safety.”
