Day 2 – A Full Day Guided Tour to Explore Marrakech

Welcome to Marrakech! Nicknamed the “Red City” for the natural pigment in the sandstone used to build its walls and buildings, Marrakech has always been a major economic center. Orient yourself around Marrakech’s main square, Jemaa el-Fna: the souks (el Attarin, Haddadine, and Smata) are to the north, the Koutoubia Mosque and Gardens are to the west, and the kasbah (old fortress or fortification) area home to the Saadian Tombs, Bahia Palace, and El Badi Palace are to the south. On the southwest corner, you will find the calèches (French for horse-drawn carriage) that offer a unique way to tour the medina (old quarter). In the Ville Nouvelle, you will find the Majorelle Gardens—a perfect spot for respite away from the crowds. Start your day at the Koutoubia Mosque with its towering minaret. Notice the open spaces and courtyards along many alleyways: these fondouks or caravanserai were once inns used by traders and merchants and their animals. Wander the souks and be sure to visit the Souk des Teinturiers (Dyers’ Souk) to see how workers use traditional methods to dye cloth and wool. Next, visit the 16th-century Ben Youssef Madrasa Islamic School to appreciate the carved cedar ceilings, zellij (intricate tile work), and Islamic calligraphy. Check out the 500-year-old Saadian Tombs or visit the 19th-century Bahia Palace, one of the largest and most luxurious palaces of its day. And if time allows, visit the 17th-century El Badi Palace for comparison (be sure to check out the sunken gardens). Dinner and 2nd Overnight in Marrakech.

Visit El Hank Lighthouse and enjoy views of the Hassan II Mosque from afar before carrying on to the mosque for a guided tour. Casablanca’s premier attraction, the mosque, is the largest in Morocco, with an impressive 689-foot (210-m) tall minaret. Its large complex includes a museum, hammam, a Koranic school, a library, and a prayer room supported by 78 granite and marble pillars. After your tour, Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart fans might like to pop into Rick’s Café for a bite. From here, continue your private Morocco tour to the imperial city and present-day capital, Rabat. Conclude your day with a dinner and an overnight in Rabat.

Travel Advices

Best time to visit morocco.

The climate in Morocco varies wildly according to the season and area of travel. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors. This time of year is pleasantly warm to hot (around 30°C) during the day and cool to cold (around 15°C) at night. Winter in the higher regions often brings snow and can therefore get seriously cold, particularly at night. Tourists flock to the coastline from June to September for fun in the sun, with warm mostly rain-free days. Further inland it can get hot and rain is rare, which makes the best times to travel March to June and September to December.

Morocco Culture & Customs

Morocco’s culture has developed over centuries of influence from far and wide. Contemporary Morocco is a fascinating mix of Berber, Mediterranean, Andalucian, and African traditions, which are present in the cuisine, clothing, music, language, customs, and lifestyle. As an Islamic country, most Moroccans are Muslim; however, there are small populations of people who practice Judaism and Christianity. Classic examples of Islamic architecture can be observed all throughout the country and tenets of the Islamic religion are carried out in the customs and lives of the people. The ‘Call to Prayer’ can be heard five times a day, women are expected to dress modestly and alcohol isn’t drunk by most of the population.

Most of Moroccan society can be considered traditional, with respect for elders, connection to family, and giving alms to the poor hallmarks of everyday life for many Moroccans. Hospitality is another important element of society, with warmly welcoming people into your home a time-honored tradition and social responsibility that dates back centuries.

Vegetarian and Vegan Options in Morocco ?

Much of Morocco’s cuisine revolves around meat, but vegetables are an important staple and a crucial ingredient in many dishes of the Maghreb. Your diet can consist of more than just flatbread and hummus – trust us. Keep an eye out for vegetable-based tagines and couscous, the renowned Zaalouk (a smokey eggplant and tomato salad), vegetable Briouats (triangular-filled pastries), and cinnamon oranges. Vegan options are slightly more limited, as many of the pieces of bread and couscous dishes have butter added to them, but your best bet is to enquire if yours can be made using oil instead. Otherwise, it’s easy to dine well on varied vege offerings in Morocco.

Morocco Tour Add-ons

Cooking class, quad buggy adventure, yoga session, hot air balloon, ceramic & pottery workshop,  start planning your trip now, frequently asked questions, morocco safety & marrakech safety.

Is safe to travel to morocco ? Is marrakech safe ? Until now, there is no travel warnings for Morocco. The political and security situation allows the organization of professional and tourist trips to Morocco, provided that you should be vigilant, especially when traveling along the South of the borders with Algeria & Mauritania.

Terrorist risk , Marrakech morocco safety & security

Morocco remains a safe country where tourism can be practiced without difficulty. There has been no attack in Morocco since that of April 2011 in Marrakech, in the restaurant “Argana” in Jemâa El-Fna, which had cost 17 lives. However, the Moroccan authorities have taken a series of measures to deal with a persistent terrorist risk, fueled in particular by the threats made by Daech. They regularly communicate  the dismantling of terrorist cells. The “Hadar” (vigilance) system, set up in 2014, was enhanced following the Paris bombings of 13 November 2015.

Theft & Assulats risk

  • Avoid walking with jewelery & valuables or carry large amounts of money with you at night in the city centers or peripheral districts, in order to limit the risk of theft. Take preferably a safe transport.
  • It is not recommended to walk, a fortiori at night, in places deserted by the public (beachs, public parks, in particular), or those whose bad attendance is notorious locally.
  • People traveling their cars alone, especially in the south near the beaches, should avoid parking in isolated areas, day or night, especially near a city due to the risk of assaults or theft. If you do not use the services of a campground, it is advisable to inform the Moroccan local authorities.

Do I need a visa for Morocco?

USA: No – Not required

UK: No – Not required

Australia: No – Not required

Canada: No – Not required

European countries: No – Not required

Singapore: No – Not required

Hong Kong: No – Not required

Thailand: No – Not required

Malaysia:  No – Not required

South Africa: Yes – in advance (in general, visa processing can take approximately 20 working days)

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it’s important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of Morocco for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Your consultant will also be happy to point you in the right direction with acquiring visas. Visas can take several weeks to process, so familiarize yourself with any requirements as soon as you have booked your trip to allow for processing time.

What is the internet access like in Morocco ?

Morocco’s cities have internet access available in internet cafes and hotel lobbies. In some cases, free Wi-Fi can be accessed in public places. Less internet access is available in rural areas, so be prepared to ‘disconnect’ when traveling out of Morocco’s big cities.

Buying a SIM card in Morocco

To avoid roaming charges, it is possible to buy a local SIM card in Morocco. Make sure that your phone is unlocked before you leave home so a local SIM will be compatible. Morocco has three main mobile phone networks – Meditel, Maroc Telecom, and Inwi – all of which have great coverage, which may be less effective in remote areas. 4G is widely available in the main cities and towns of Morocco.

You’ll be able to buy a SIM from a convenience store, or at a newsstand, kiosk, and this will usually set you back around 100 dirhams (around USD 10) for a fair amount of calls and mobile data. Depending on the time you travel, there will be a range of prepaid deals offered by these providers.

Please note that some Moroccan telecommunications companies have blocked the call feature on internet calling apps like Skype and WhatsApp so customers use their local call network. Messaging services on these apps are not blocked. If you’d like to call with apps like this during your time in Morocco, you may need to install a Virtual Private Network (VPN) on your mobile phone.

Will my mobile phone work in Morocco?

Mobile/cellphone coverage is generally excellent in Morocco’s cities and metropolitan areas, although expect limited coverage in remote, desert, or mountainous areas. If you want to use your mobile phone on the go, your best bet is to buy a local SIM to insert into your unlocked phone for the duration of your stay. Otherwise, global roaming can be activated with your current service provider, but be sure to check the charges associated with this as it can often be very expensive, especially in Morocco.

I’m one person interested this tour. Would it be possible to join a group? How much does the tour cost?

Daniel 03/05/2018

I am traveling to Morocco in April and we are curious if there are any tours that start and end in Marrakech and allow us to travel to Chefchaouen. We arrive to Marrakech on Sunday night, April 15 and depart from Marrakech on Saturday evening, April 21.

I see many tours online leaving from Marrakech to Chefchaouen and ending in Fez. Please let us know if it is possible to return to Marrakech. Please advise if you could point us in the right direction.

Historical and Cultural Significance

Chefchaouen is not just a picturesque town; it’s a rich tapestry of history and culture. Founded in 1471 as a small fortress, this town has been a melting pot of cultures, including Berber, Moorish, and Spanish influences, creating a unique cultural identity. The city’s famed blue walls, originally a tradition among the Jewish community, symbolize Chefchaouen’s unique heritage. This intertwining of cultures is evident in its inhabitants’ architecture, cuisine, and daily life, making Chefchaouen a living museum of Moroccan history.

Testimonials from Visitors

Travelers who have wandered through Chefchaouen’s labyrinthine streets invariably speak of its almost mystical charm. Many describe it as a tranquil escape, noting the calming effect of its blue-hued streets. “Walking through Chefchaouen is like moving inside a dream,” says Maria, a visitor from Spain. Another traveler, John from Australia, remarks, “It’s not just the colors; it’s the warmth of the people and the serenity of the place that captivates you.” These testimonials highlight not just the visual beauty of Chefchaouen but the overall experience of visiting this unique city.

Key Attractions

The main attraction of Chefchaouen is undoubtedly its Medina, a beautifully preserved old city with winding alleys and blue-washed buildings. Key landmarks include the Outa el Hammam Square with the grand Kasbah, a fortress and dungeon, and the Great Mosque, known for its octagonal minaret. For those seeking a panoramic view of the city, the hike to the Spanish Mosque provides a breathtaking vista, especially at sunset. The Ras Elma River, the source of the city’s fresh mountain water, is another attraction, offering a scenic backdrop for a leisurely walk. In addition, the local markets brimming with crafts, textiles, and unique souvenirs offer an authentic taste of Moroccan life.

Chefchaouen’s allure lies not just in its aesthetic beauty but in the stories, history, and experiences it offers. This blue city is more than worth the journey—it’s a destination that captures the heart and stays in the memory long after you’ve left its enchanting streets.

Is Chefchaouen too touristy?

Chefchaouen, with its Instagram-famous blue streets, has seen a significant increase in tourism over recent years. This surge of interest has brought concerns about the city losing its authentic charm. Visitors often wonder if the influx of tourists has overshadowed the genuine Moroccan experience that Chefchaouen promises. While it’s true that popular spots in the city can feel crowded, especially during peak seasons, Chefchaouen still retains much of its original allure. The city has managed to preserve its cultural integrity, which is evident in the local customs, traditional markets, and the daily life of its residents that continue amidst the tourist bustle.

Finding the Balance

The key to experiencing the authentic Chefchaouen is stepping off the beaten path. Beyond the main squares and the most photographed streets, there are quieter alleys, family-run cafes, and artisan workshops where the real heartbeat of the city can be felt. Engaging with locals, trying traditional Moroccan dishes at local restaurants, and exploring the city during off-peak hours can provide a more authentic experience.

Visitors can also contribute to maintaining Chefchaouen’s authenticity by respecting local customs and traditions. This includes dressing modestly, being mindful of photography etiquette, and supporting local businesses rather than tourist-centric shops. Such respectful tourism ensures a mutually beneficial experience, preserving the city’s cultural heritage while allowing visitors to enjoy its unique charm.

Moreover, staying in traditional accommodations like Riads (Moroccan guesthouses) and participating in local experiences like cooking classes or guided cultural tours can further deepen the understanding and appreciation of Chefchaouen’s rich culture and history.

While Chefchaouen has adapted to accommodate its popularity among tourists, it has retained its soul. The city continues to be a vibrant, living testament to Moroccan culture , offering an authentic experience to those who seek it. Balancing tourism and authenticity is not just the city’s responsibility but also that of the visitors, who play a crucial role in preserving the essence of this blue gem.

Historical Reasons for the Blue Color

The origins of Chefchaouen’s blue walls are as mystical as the city itself. One popular theory is that blue paint was introduced by Jewish refugeesfrom Spain during the 15 th century, who considered blue a symbol of the sky and heaven, thus reflecting their spiritual beliefs. Another theory suggests that the blue serves a practical purpose: repelling mosquitoes and keeping the houses cool during the hot summer months. The tradition of painting the city in shades of blue has been maintained over the decades, becoming an integral part of Chefchaouen’s identity and a beautiful remnant of its historical past.

Cultural Significance

In Chefchaouen, the color blue transcends mere aesthetics; it holds a more profound cultural significance. Blue is seen as a color of peace, wisdom, and serenity, qualities deeply embedded in the city’s daily life. It also represents the city’s harmonious relationship with nature, mirroring the sky and surrounding mountains. For the residents, maintaining the blue is not just about preserving a tourist attraction; it is about upholding a tradition that has become a part of their cultural fabric.

Interviews with Locals

To gain deeper insight, conversations with locals reveal a personal connection to the blue city. Hamid, a lifelong resident, says, “The blue streets are a part of who we are. They remind us of our history and our ancestors’ resilience.” Another local, Amina, a shop owner, adds, “The blue walls bring a sense of calm and belonging. It’s not just a color but a feeling you can’t find anywhere else.” These sentiments echo the locals’ pride and attachment to their unique city, showcasing how the blue of Chefchaouen is more than a visual wonder; it’s a living, breathing part of its community.

Through its blue walls, Chefchaouen tells a story steeped in history, enriched by culture, and cherished by its inhabitants. The city’s palette of blue draws visitors from around the world and continues to be a source of identity and pride for those who call it home.

Chefchaouen  was founded in 1471 in the Rif Mountains by Jews and Moors fleeing Spain. A lot of different theories about why Chefchaouen is blue; Some says it was painted in blue by the Jews who settled there after fleeing Hitler, others say it’s to keep the mosquitoes away, while some just said it represents the color of the sea.

Chefchaouen  or Chaouen is a city in the north-west of Morocco. It is the main town of the province of the same name, and stands out for its buildings in blue tones. Chefchaouen or Chaouen, as it is often called by the Moroccans, is a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to Tangier and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The name refers to the shape of the mountain tops above the city, which resemble the two horns of a goat. “Chef Chaouen” derives from the Berber word for horns, Ichawen.

Chefchaouen  is a popular shopping destination as well, as it offers many native  handicrafts  that are not available elsewhere in Morocco, such as wool garments and woven blankets. The  goat cheese  native to the area is also popular with tourists.

The countryside around it has a reputation for being a prolific source of kief. The  Chefchaouen  region is one of the main producers of cannabis in Morocco.

The growing tourist industry is geared especially towards Spanish tourists, who are especially numerous during great Catholic feasts like Semana Santa and Christmas.

There are a number of distinct mosques in the town. Aside from the mosque at Place Uta Hammam in the medina, there is also a mosque dedicated to the patron saint of Northern Morocco’s Jebalah region, Moulay Abdeslam Ben Mchich Alami. His tomb and the village surrounding it is by the way an hour’s drive or so from Chefchaouen on the old road to Larache. There is also a ruined mosque built by the Spanish, with stairs still in the tower.

Duration of the Day Trip;  Full day, pick up at 8 AM (3 hours in order to get to Chefchaouen).

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration.

Step into a blue town of cobblestone and intrigue during this exciting 12-day Morocco trip. Feel the silence of the Saharan sand dunes, ride a camel to a desert town, and explore an old Roman city. You can also visit famous movie locations and listen to traditional storytellers weave their way through historical narratives. All of these experiences will be part of your journey.

Customizable Itinerary

Chefchaouen – arrive in the blue town.

Chefchaouen will immediately take your breath away. Oddly, it is not the blue so much as it is the location. The old town is perched on a mountain slope. Vehicles cannot enter through the narrow town gate, and they certainly would not be able to navigate the steep streets. This inaccessible location is part of the city’s charm, and your guide will help carry your luggage into the old town. Your hotel will be in the heart of old Chefchaouen in a converted 15th-century building with a private balcony. Although it is a two-hour drive from Fes-Sais Airport, starting in Chefchaouen is a great way to overcome jet lag or travel fatigue.

What's Included:

Chefchaouen – Relaxing Day in the Town

If it was not for the red Grand Mosque, walking around Chefchaouen in search of a non-blue building could be a futile task. Most buildings are only painted to eye level, which somehow makes them more noticeable as the blue contrasts with the whitewash above. The lanes of Old Chefchaouen travel in a spiral, so if you keep walking around, you will gradually end up outside of the town. While this can be baffling at first, it is all part of the fun. Exploring is only possible on foot, and it is the local sights that create your experience.

Chefchaouen – Mountain Market and Cooking Class

After three days, you will be growing accustomed to the contrasts of the city. A local guide will narrate the town’s history as you visit the weekly Chefchaouen market. Produce arrives from across the Rif Mountains and the coastline for this Wednesday tradition and the market may feel like it has not changed since the 15th century. You can take a stroll through the market to see the vast array of products on sale. The market is the best place to buy all of the ingredients for a Moroccan lunch feast. You will spend the rest of the morning in your guide’s kitchen, learning the secrets to Rif Mountain’s cuisine.

Fes – From the Romans to the Souks

The rest of the Moroccan story will now begin to unfold as you move to your next location. This morning, you will travel through a riverine valley to Volubilis, which is the site of a once-mighty Roman capital. You will then travel to Meknes, which is Morocco’s city of the artisans. Artisanal products have never been taxed here, so even the poorest looking houses are framed by a beautifully carved door or an intricate archway. Meknes is a city of old-world creativity, and the traditions of yesteryear continue to define the urban landscape. Afterward, you will transfer to Fes.

Fes – Discovering the Best of Fes

Fes is Morocco at its best. Chefchaouen is a destination that you may want to linger in, but Fes is a destination you may be happy to leave because the experience is intense for even the most seasoned of travelers. Regardless, Fes is not recommended to skip on any trip to Morocco. It will help to have an excellent guide, and it definitely helps when you have a loose itinerary. On a private tour, you will see icons like Dar el Makhzen. A calming escape will come from a hill that overlooks the city, which is an incredible sunset point that demonstrates the true scale of Fes.

Erg Chebbi – The Atlas Mountains and the Sahara

Today, you will venture to a small Berber village for tea and a chat before continuing through the Atlas and finally to the Sahara. It takes most of the day to reach Merzouga, and the journey will continue by camel. You will ride across the Saharan sand dunes and cross a number of ridges until all you see is sand. Your luxury Bedouin camp will be completely disconnected from the rest of the world. Here, sunset is a beautiful time, especially when you walk up to a ridge and watch the dunes change colors. Nighttime is even better because the stars are incredibly vivid.

Erg Chebbi – On the Sand Dunes

Understanding the Sahara would take many lifetimes, and you only have one day. The best way to grasp the world’s greatest desert is to sit back and watch. The color of the landscape will change dramatically throughout the day. Temperatures also change with the sun’s intensity, and the silence is incredible during the hottest hours of the day. The wind may sing to you as it rushes past you in different tones. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to wander on a camel with your guide. For the rest of the day, you can enjoy the luxury and tradition of the Bedouin camp.

Todra Gorge – Camel Caravan

You will journey out of the desert at sunrise to Rissani. For more than a millennia, Rissani was an important Saharan trading town and a meeting place for those who brought goods on camel from as far away as Timbuktu. Even today, it retains an aura of mystery as if the old wooden structures are still waiting for desert wanderers. From Rissani, you will travel back into the Atlas and follow an old river chasm that gradually narrows. Your lodge will be perched in the valley.

Ait Benhaddou – Stunning Movie Locations

Today, you will continue your journey through the Atlas. Surrounded by desert plains, Ouarzazate may initially seem to be an unassuming city. The expanse of space has always excited movie directors, and Ouarzazate’s landscapes have hosted everything from biblical classics to Hollywood blockbusters. Today, you will visit two movie studios and see the props from popular movies with a local guide. You will then have lunch at a cafe in the city square before spending the afternoon in Ait Benhaddou, which was the setting for the film Gladiator . The area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and you can spend the rest of the day at leisure, exploring the site.

Marrakech – Djemaa El-Fna

This morning, you will transfer to Marrakech. Like Fes, Marrakech provides a lot for the senses to take in, especially after the solitude of the Sahara and Atlas Mountains. Therefore, today, you can take it slow and indulge in a stroll near your hotel. In the evening, you will visit Djemaa El-Fna. Djemaa El-Fna is the historic meeting place of storytellers, snake charmers, acrobats, and animated drummers. These entertainers begin by attracting curious onlookers, and then they narrate a tale, play some music, raise a cobra’s head, or somersault wildly.

Marrakech – Full-Day Tour

Much like Fes, Marrakech comes alive when you are accompanied by an excellent guide. Beautiful Moorish architecture impresses and ranges from the simplicity of the Koutoubia Mosque to the intricate detail at the Saadian Tombs. You can wander past the spices, admire the fabric collections, and pass a variety of jewels. On a full-day tour of Marrakech, you can mix local sites with iconic highlights before indulging in a drink on a terrace that overlooks Djemaa El-Fna.

Marrakech – Departure

After a casual morning in Marrakech, you will be transferred to the airport for your outbound flight.

Detailed Description

Morocco tends to conjure images of souks , medinas, mosques, and bustling streets of traders, but these images are just one side to Morocco. There is so much more to this landscape that stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the high mountains and the Sahara Desert. One day, you will be surrounded by the colors of busy city souks , and the next day, you can be standing on a rugged mountain pass. Some evenings will be spent listening to storytellers and snake charmers, and others will be spent gazing at the desert stars. Morocco is a country with an incredible range of experiences, and you will begin with Chefchaouen, which is also known as the blue pearl.

Chefchaouen is entirely pedestrianized and ideal for overcoming any travel fatigue. You can explore at your leisure, and there is something that will capture your heart around every corner. Next, you will visit a market and cook with a local chef. You will then leave Chefchaouen to see the highlights of Morocco, starting with Roman cities of Volubilis and Meknes.

You will then spend a couple of nights in Fes. With its energy and never-ending procession of local sights, the world’s largest walled city is Morocco’s most iconic experience. You will then cross the Middle Atlas, and your driver will lead you to the desert. Camels will take you further into the dunes. Your evening journey will be an impressive sunrise and sunset ride the following day. Your experience will be complemented by your boutique camp, where you can casually watch the desert go through its impressive color changes.

The following day, you will leave the sand but stay in the desert with a stop in Rissani. You will then continue Todra Gorge before exploring a slightly fictional world. Ouarzazate is the small city at the heart of Morocco’s movie industry, and you will be amazed by how many international blockbusters have been shot nearby. Marrakech, Chefchaouen & the Sahara Desert: the ultimate 2-week Morocco itinerary

For many travellers, it’s the fantasy of riding camels through the Sahara Desert, the sun setting behind the sand dunes and a scarf fluttering lightly around their head, that draws them to Morocco. As spectacular as the desert may be, though, it’s only a small part of what makes this North African country so special.

Morocco is all about losing yourself in the intoxicating chaos of the souks as you barter for colourful scarves (and fielding the occasional offer to “buy you” for 200 camels); sleeping under billions of stars in the middle of the desert; strolling through colourful Old World medinas that burn gold in the afternoon light; and sampling flavours you’ve never even imagined, everything about the country a beautiful assault to your senses.

There’s an incredible culture and rich history to discover here too, and every moment spent in Morocco promises to mesmerise you further. Use this 2-week travel itinerary to discover some of top highlights in Morocco, from the buzz of Marrakech and the enchanting Sahara Desert to Morocco’s famous Blue City.

What's in this travel guide

Planning for your trip

Best time to visit morocco.

Morocco can rise to swelteringly hot temperatures, especially in the Sahara, so the best time to visit the country is during the cooler months in spring (March to May) or autumn (September to October). That being said, it’s still possible to enjoy a wonderful trip in summer, you’ll just need to prepare to do a lot of sweating.

It’s also worth noting that the country, now a major tourist draw, tends to be busier during the European and North American summer holidays from June to August. I travelled around Morocco in August, and although it wasn’t difficult to do the things we wanted to do, my top choice riads were completely sold out months in advance, so it’s definitely something to consider.

Getting to Morocco

For this itinerary, fly into Marrakech through the large Marrakech Menara Airport . It’s usually possible to find cheap flights from most cities in western Europe, particularly those in Spain and France, for as little as $75AUD one way!

From Marrakech Menara Airport, the best way to get into the medina is to take a taxi, which can be hailed on arrival and shouldn’t cost more than 150Dh . The taxi can only take you so far into the walled city, though, so know that you might have to walk a bit to your actual riad or hotel. It can be a good idea to contact the riad from the car and see if one of the staff will come meet you where the taxi drops you off, just since it takes a bit of practice to navigate through the maze of narrow streets.

Getting around Morocco

As Morocco has a reasonable network of inexpensive buses , all of the internal transit described in this itinerary is over-land. The main companies are CTM and Supratours , and apparently they are very comparable, although I personally only travelled with CTM.

You can book buses on the spot by just going to the departure station , but in the event that a particular route is sold out (as can happen in summer or to popular destinations like Chefchaouen), it’s often possible to pay for a private taxi instead. There are usually large queues of taxis waiting outside the station and you can negotiate a reasonable price with the driver (we paid 600Dh for the 4hr drive from Fes to Chefchaouen, which was about $45AUD each for me and a friend).

Always speak to the staff at your riad or some trusted local to get an idea of a fair price before trying to haggle for a taxi, because the drivers will definitely try to rip you off if they sense that you don’t know the going rate for a particular trip.

Tagine and other Moroccan food

Safety in Morocco

It’s safe enough for women to travel alone in Morocco , but you will definitely need to keep your wits about you, especially in the larger cities like Marrakech and Fes. It’s also not a destination I’d necessarily recommend to first-time solo travellers, just because there’s a fair bit of harassment that goes on in the souks . Most of it is harmless, but it can be pretty unnerving if you aren’t expecting it or haven’t experienced it before.

Make sure you always know where you’re going and how to get there when you’re out exploring— it’s a popular scam for men to stop you, tell you you’re going the wrong way, and then purposefully get you completely lost so you have no choice but to pay them for help. Ask staff at your  riad  for directions before you head out and only ask trustworthy shop-owners or women for help navigating.

There were also some times, mostly in the chaotic souks of Marrakech, where I didn’t feel comfortable having my camera on me and I also wouldn’t have wanted to carry a purse (I just shoved my money down my bra). Just be extra aware when you’re in crowded areas and don’t lose track of your valuables while you’re shopping, because it would really be all too easy as hundreds of people brush past you.

Trip budget for Morocco

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the budget for this specific 2-week itinerary. Many travellers will fall somewhere between the two options of mid-range and shoe-string, but this should give you a good idea of exactly how cheaply you can experience Morocco for and how much it would cost to add in some extras.

Mid-range travellers that are willing to splurge on a few things, such as nicer riads and restaurants, more activities, and an upgraded Sahara Desert tour, can expect to spend a total of 9180Dh for this itinerary, or 612Dh per day ($94AUD per day).

Shoe-string budget travellers counting every Dirham by staying in cheap hostels, eating some street food or other cheap meals, and opting for fewer tours can expect to spend a total of 4135Dh for this itinerary, or 275Dh per day ($42AUD per day).

Note that the accommodation and food costs below are only for 12 days/nights because these costs are included in the 3-day Sahara Desert Tour (quoted separately in the bottom row of the table).

Packing list for Morocco

  • 2x shirts and singlets (avoid cotton, go for something that will dry quickly)
  • Lightweight scarf to cover up your shoulders
  • Linen or other lightweight long sleeve shirt
  • Light jumper (unlikely you’ll need this, but good for the flight there)
  • Lightweight comfortable pants for hot weather
  • Lightweight dress
  • Sandals (Birkenstocks are a good option)
  • Sunnies + hat
  • Hygiene: shampoo bar , tooth brush, razor, etc
  • A reusable water with a built-in filter
  • Passport (+ colour photo copies), credit cards
  • Camera + spare batteries!
  • Travel adapter (Morocco uses a European adapter like this )

Busy souks of Marrakech Morocco

*Overview: recommended itinerary

  • Marrakech (2-3 days)
  • Sahara Desert (3-4 days)
  • Fes (1-3 days)
  • Cascades d’Akchour
  • Oued Laou (2-3 days)

Atlas Mountains behind Marrakech Morocco

Marrakech is a great place to begin your Moroccan adventure, as flights into the large Marrakech Menara Airport are frequent and inexpensive from Europe— just don’t expect the city to go easy on you. Upon entering the medina (Old City), you’ll be in for quite a culture shock as narrow, winding lanes give way to chaotic souks overflowing with people, sounds, and foreign smells . Wandering through the souks is total sensory overload, but these buzzing shops are the lifeblood of Morocco’s “Red City” and they are at once both exhausting and exhilarating.

As you explore Marrakech, be sure to venture into Jemaa al-Fnaa, a large square in the Medina that is home to more shops, snake tamers, and plenty of restaurants . Try your first chicken tajine at one of the restaurants overlooking the square, and then shop around to find a good deal on a Sahara Desert Tour departing from Marrakech. Read this post to learn more about how to choose a good tour and get the best possible deal:  A GUIDE TO BOOKING THE BEST SAHARA DESERT TOUR

Recommended time:  2-3 days

Highlights: Get lost in the maze of souks as you shop for scarves, jewellery, perfumes, spices, lanterns, and other Moroccan souvenirs; visit the bustling main square, Jemaa al-Fnaa ; walk through the amazing  Ben Youssef Madrasa.

Getting there:  Fly into Marrakech Menara Airport and then take a taxi to the medina   for about 150Dh .

Where to stay:  A large double room with aircon at  Riad Dar Nael   is 200Dh per night , which includes the help of some incredibly attentive staff who prepared food for us at all hours and drew intricate maps of the Medina to help us get around.

Pink walls and buildings of Boumalne Dades Morocco

Sahara Desert tour to Merzouga

You’ll be retrieved from your riad in Marrakech early on the first morning of your Sahara Desert Tour, driving first through Tizi n’Tichka Pass and the Atlas Mountains that, in winter, receive a beautiful dusting of snow. You’ll stop to admire the view in a few spots before reaching the walled city of Aït Benhaddou , a picturesque terracotta-coloured fortress that often provides a backdrop to action films set in ancient Persia or other parts of Arabia.

More movie scenery can be seen in  Ouarzazate, the so-called “Moroccan Hollywood” , where there is an inexpensive studio tour on offer after lunch. The day finally concludes at a nice hotel in the  Dadès Valley , where you’ll spend the night surrounded by stunning scenery, feasting on traditional Moroccan cuisine, and learning Berber songs in a spirited drum circle.

After a bit of driving the following day, you’ll spend the bulk of the morning exploring a Berber village with a local guide who will tell you all about the history of the area and the Berber way of life . Walking through the fields and the little village, you’ll finish with tea at a rug shop, where you’ll learn all about how the pieces are made using camel hair and natural dyes (and also be somewhat pressured into buying a rug, but don’t feel obligated).

The afternoon brings more beautiful scenery in Tinghir and the impressive Todra Gorge , whose chilly waters are practically medicinal on a hot day, and then you’ll finally arrive in Merzouga to begin the much-anticipated Sahara Desert portion of the tour. Leaving the bulk of your things behind in the van, you’ll ride out into the desert on camels (dromedaries, actually) and spend nearly two hours moving slowly across the sand towards an extremely remote camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes where an enormous Moroccan feast awaits . The standard tours will provide shared accommodation in a large desert tent, but I’d recommend pulling your bedding out into the sand to sleep under the stars.

Waking up in the middle of the Sahara, scramble up the nearby dunes to enjoy the sunrise over a sea of golden sand before cruising back towards Merzouga either via camel or exhilarating 4×4 ride (a 4D/3N tour will stay an extra night in the desert before returning). A large breakfast is waiting in Merzouga, as well as hot showers, but this is where you’ll say goodbye to at least some of your group. Those who are returning to Marrakech will depart in the van for a long day on the road, while the guide will help organise onward transport for those continuing on to Fes.

Recommended time:  3-4 days

Highlights: Admire breathtaking natural scenery in the Atlas Mountains, Dadès Valley, and Todra Gorge ; learn more about the Berber way of life in Boumalne Dades and on a village tour; ride a camel over sand dunes in the Sahara and sleep under the stars in the middle of the desert.

Getting there: Your Sahara Desert Tour will include transport from your riad in Marrakech all the way to Merzouga (where the guide can help you organise transportation through to Fes). If you pre-book your tour online, expect to pay as much as 3,000Dh for the exact same tour you’ll find locally in Marrakech for 750Dh.  Read this post for more info on finding a good tour once you arrive in Marrakech.

Where to stay:  Your  accomodation is included in the price of your tour , and is usually a nice hotel in the Boumalne Dades area on the 1st night and a Sahara Desert camp on the 2nd.

View over tanneries in Fes Morocco

For about €20 each, you should be able to hire a driver to take you from the Sahara Desert all the way to Fes, stopping at several points of interest along the way. The drive takes the better part of the day, but the beautiful  Ziz Valley and Cedar Forest, whose trees are full of friendly monkeys looking for a snack, break up the trip nicely.

When you do arrive in Morocco’s oldest city, you may find that the 9th century Medina lacks some of the colour and sparkle that makes Marrakech’s network of souks, with their overflow of filigree lanterns and rainbow of scarves, so enchanting. Yet, Fes feels somehow more authentic .

Locals buzz around you with hardly a second glance in many parts of the walled city, the hassling and harassment from shop owners a mere fraction of what you likely experienced in Marrakech. In many ways, our time in Fes was much more pleasant, as we were finally able to relax enough to enjoy our surroundings (and, more importantly, the street food) , but I still loved the (albeit stressful) experience of wandering through Marrakech’s narrow lanes and being entirely inundated with sights, smells, and sounds. These cities are so different, and it would be a shame to skip either one.

Recommended time:  1-3 days

Highlights: Feed monkeys in the Cedar Forest en route to Fes; visit the colourful tanneries ; try Msemen and some of the other delicious (and cheap)  street food  options on offer in the Medina; sip traditional mint tea on the rooftop of your riad .

Getting there & away: The guide from your Sahara Desert Tour will be able to help you organise transport from Merzouga to Fes. A private driver only costs about 200Dh per person, and usually includes plenty of interesting stops. When you’re approaching Fes, have your driver make a call to your riad and one of the staff will come to escort you through the maze of narrow streets— cars aren’t able to drive into the Medina and you’re sure to get painfully lost on your own, which is unlikely to be a pleasant introduction to the city.

Where to stay: Riad Rocco offers large double rooms and amazing Moroccan hospitality at 200Dh/night. The staff will happily help you plan your days and organise onward bus transport.

Cacti and blue city from above Chefchaouen Morocco

Chefchaouen

From Fes, reach your next destination via bus (a modest 75Dh per person) or in a private taxi (600Dh total), both of which depart from the large bus station in town and arrive approximately 3 hours later in The Blue City. Arguably Morocco’s most instagram-able destination, Chefchaouen and its small medina have become amazingly popular in the last few years , and for good reason. Strolling through the vibrantly blue streets, walking up countless blue steps, and gawking at the seemingly infinite number of decorative blue doors and fountains around the city, you’ll feel as if you’re in a never-ending postcard.

I asked my friend Hind, a Chefchaouen native, about the history of all this blue , and she told me that it is closely tied to Jewish settlement of the medina , beginning during the Middle Ages and continuing through WWII. These Jewish settlers painted many of their homes blue, a colour meant to represent the sky and, therefore, heaven , but the bright blue walls and doors also had the unfortunate side-effect of highlighting the residents who were non-Muslim. Hind told me that the rest of the community later chose to paint their homes blue to prevent the easy identification of Jewish families and limit religious persecution. A beautiful story of coexistance that makes for a truly one-of-a-kind destination.

While you’re in town, be sure to walk up into the hills and look down on the sea of blue below from the Spanish Mosque or Hotel Atlas Chaouen , both of which are fabulous (and free) viewpoints. For even more blue photo-ops, check out the  Outa el Hammam & Kasbah  and Plaza Uta el-Hammam. Most importantly, though, just make time to wander through the medina streets and soak in this enchanting place and its friendly locals.

Highlights:  Wander through  Outa el Hammam & Kasbah ; take in views of the city from the  Spanish Mosque and  Hotel Atlas Chaouen ; soak in one of the local hammams ; explore Chefchaouen’s beautiful blue streets .

Getting there: You can reach Chefchaouen in about 3 hours via the CTM bus , departing several times per day from the bus station in Fes (8am, 11am, 12pm, 4.15pm, 11.45pm) for 75Dh . If tickets are sold out, which is common in the busier months, you can still reach the Blue City via a taxi for 600Dh (departing from the bus station). It’s not a bad idea to have one of the staff from your riad in Fes accompany you to the station to help you organise either the bus or a taxi.

Where to stay: A short walk from the centre of town, Hotel Atlas Chaouen offers incredible rooftop views over Chefchaouen and its sea of blue buildings for about 350Dh/night.

Top tips: Have lunch in one of the many restaurants lining Plaza Uta el-Hammam, and enjoy a large plate of chicken couscous while enjoying a beautiful view of the city.

Swimming hole Cascades d'Akchour Morocco

Cascades d’Akchour

While in Chefchaouen, take a break from all the blue and venture out to the incredible Cascades d’Akchour, a destination that was recommended to me again and again by locals (and that still exceeded my expectations). It’s only about a 45 minute drive to reach Akchour and its many waterfalls, swimming holes, and endless supply of natural scenery.

There are a number of different short hikes in the area , and all are reportedly amazing, but it’s usually a good idea to get advice from a local as to which ones will be best during your visit. One of the falls was dry in August, for example, so we were advised to do two separate walks to the Lower Falls and God’s Bridge , the latter of which is an impressive rock arch that was one of my absolute highlights. In asking for advice on the hikes, you might find that few people in Akchour speak English (although some speak Spanish or French), but they are incredibly friendly and willing to help,  even if it means spending several minutes trying to understand your question. A good thing, too, because you’ll also definitely need help with directions to the various trails, as they are not marked.

Recommended time: day trip from Chefchaouen

Highlights: Hike to a number of beautiful waterfalls ; swim in the cool, clear water beneath the natural rock arch,  God’s Bridge ; enjoy chicken tajine and other local delicacies at the river.

Getting there & away: It is possible to take a tour to Akchour , but I didn’t see any groups while we were there. Instead, have your riad organise a taxi for you, which should only cost around  250Dh total for the 45min drive from Chefchaouen . For a little extra, you’ll be able to have the driver wait for you to explore for a few hours orcome back to get you at a pre-arranged time.

Where to stay: Akchour is best enjoyed as a day trip from nearby Chefchaouen.

Top tips: Bring a camera, several bottles of water, a bit of cash, and a hat with you to Akchour, but don’t worry about hiking boots. I did all my walking in Tevas, and they were actually far better than boots or runners, because you’ll need to walk through the water to get all the way to God’s Bridge and no one likes wet shoes!

Sunset over Oued Laou beach Morocco

Oued Laou & Tetouan

For a relaxing end to what has undoubtedly been a whirlwind trip through Morocco, travel from Chefchaouen to nearby Oued Laou via an inexpensive bus and enjoy a few days at the beach .

This is a popular destination for local families on holiday, so you’ll likely be sharing the sand with masses of excited children, but that’s half of the fun anyway. Take time to check out the variety of open-late cafes and restaurants, serving up plenty of traditional cuisine alongside hot-weather favourites like smoothies and ice-cream. After your time in Oued Laou, you’ll be recharged and ready for your next adventure!

Highlights: Relax with local families on one of Morocco’s most beautiful beaches .

Getting there: A 1hr   bus from Chefchaoeun should only cost around 20Dh. Onward transport to Tetouan is 2hrs and will also cost around 20Dh; this is the best place to catch a bus back to Fes for your flight home (or on to your next destination).

Where to stay:  Try one of the great Airbnbs near the beach in Oued Laou. In summer, head back out after dinner to watch the town come to life in the dark― children’s rides whirl noisily, market stalls sell all sorts of snacks, and cafes are open for midnight chats with friends.
