Home » Pedernales
Pedernales is a small, remote town in the southwestern part of the Dominican Republic, known for its beautiful beaches and stunning landscapes. Visitors to Pedernales can enjoy activities such as snorkeling, fishing, and hiking in the nearby Sierra de Bahoruco National Park. The town is also a great place to experience the local culture, with many traditional restaurants and markets offering delicious food and handmade crafts. Whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation, Pedernales has something to offer everyone.
The majority of visitors head to Pedernales to reach Bahía de Las Águilas, the crown jewel of Dominican beaches, sitting below breathtaking karst cliffs and untouched since Pre-Columbian times. But those who stay overnight will find a province boasting some of the most unique geographical features and protected natural sights in the country. Parks, lagoons, and lakes that host endemic, endangered reptiles, birds, and wild flora. Ancient Taino caverns that reveal freshwater sinkholes, and rock art few have explored. And the Jaragua National Park , a jewel in the DR’s nature crown, part of a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, that is home to 400 species of flora, 130 species of birds–look for flamingos at Laguna de Oviedo –an abundant marine life with turtles nesting on its beaches, and sharks swimming off the islands of Beata and Alto Velo. You’ll find a haven of reptiles as well, including the Hispaniolan solenodon, and the Hispaniolan hutia. Nearby, American crocodiles breed and bask in hypersaline waters at Lago Enriquillo , the Caribbean’s largest lake, sitting 43 meters (140 feet) below sea level.
Head off the beach and forests, and swim in river fed pools amid caverns. Or drive up into the cool mountains at 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) above sea level, and witness rare Caribbean phenomena like the geological depression at Hoyo de Pelempito .
Pedernales’ attractions are often included in tours of the Barahona province, located approximately two hours away (135 kilometers or 84 miles). But you can escape the madding crowds and overnight near the country’s most pristine beach if you choose, and take in this nature province’s wild surroundings.
Pedernales’ best entry point is Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) , located approximately four and a half hours west.

Few tourists go to visit the region of Pedernales , a concentration of nature, history and Caribe completely outside the routes of massive tourism. Wild, pure and uncontaminated landscapes. This solution will introduce you to some of the most exclusive Caribbean Beaches (click here to watch the video) , in an intimate and profound way. It will put you in contact with uncontaminated nature and with its splendid and varied fauna. It will introduce you to the simplicity, generosity and dignity of its inhabitants.
The Pedernales region is located at the south-western tip of the Dominican Republic , on the border with the state of Haiti . Few roads, rarefied towns, sites of interest often difficult to reach by land. In this exclusive solution we will have to make several kilometers to reach the region and experience the different places of interest. They will be two very intense days . We will sleep in an ecological hotel, eating typical foods of that region. We will, however, be rewarded with beaches, lagoons and unique panoramas throughout the Dominican Republic . We will be able to return to Bayahibe, and to your country, having experienced a profound experience.
This solution is carried out for groups of minimum 6 people . It may be a high-profile option for families, couples and groups of friends who want to add a touch of uniqueness to their trip to Bayahibe, perhaps alternating this experience with the life of a tourist village.
DAY 1: at about 6 am, we will leave Bayahibe , have breakfast in Santo Domingo and resume the journey.
During the journey:
We will visit the town of San Rafael . In the stretch of the highway we can enjoy breathtaking views. The village of San Rafael is instead known for the many Natural Pools created by the river that runs through the town.
We will pass from the village of Paraìso appreciated for its splendid beach, but also famous for one of the most beautiful basketball courts in the world, surrounded by tall palm trees and Caribbean transparent waters beyond the stands. We will arrive in Los Patos , where we will have lunch and stop off at a spectacular lagoon created by fresh water that gushes fresh from the mountain and then flows into the Caribbean Sea .
Visit to the Oviedo Lagoon , in the Parque National Jaragua . The reserve was created to host the largest colony of flamingos in the country, which dwells here for most of the year ( in August the peak ). Other species present: frigates, tanager terns of palms, roseate spoonbills, white herons and arrival at the ecological hotel in Pedernales , where we will dine and spend the night.
DAY 2: at about 8am breakfast and then departure. We will cross the whole Jaragua park , up to the village of Las Cuevas where we will take a boat to the Baya de las Aguilas .
Visit the Baya de las Aguilas , a pristine beach that still does not fit into any itinerary today. 10 km of deserted beach that extends, in a wide arc, between two headlands. Here we will have lunch after visiting Barahona and then return to Bayahibe .
The excursion takes from a minimum of 6 to a maximum of 15 people.
The month of August, thanks to the large presence of pink flamingos in the Oviedo lagoon, has a high demand and it is therefore advisable to book in advance.

Pedernales, Home to Bahia de las Aguilas, The Best Beach in the Caribbean
Updated: Dec 22, 2023
Pedernales is a small coastal city located in the southwestern part of the Dominican Republic. This beautiful city is known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rich cultural heritage. In this blog post, we will take a closer look at what makes Pedernales such a special place to visit.
Pedernales was originally named after a Spanish inhabitant named Juan López who settled in the area during the 19th century. The province is home to the Pedernales river, which is abundant in flint, a material used by theTaíno people to make sharp tools such as axes and arrowheads. The River is the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic
The province encompasses several adjacent lands, including Isla Beata, Isla Los Frailes, Alto Velo Island, and Cayo Piedra Negra. Prior to the arrival of the Spanish, the territory of Pedernales was known as the chiefdom of Jaragua, which was led by Cacique Bohechío. The inhabitants of this land were known for their rebellion against Spanish oppression.
In 1493, Christopher Columbus discovered Beata Island and recognized its strategic location for ships. This attracted settlers to the island's shores, and the Spanish began keeping cattle on the island for maritime expeditions.
From 1844 to the signing of the territorial division treaty (1929-1936), there were several incidents and border conflicts in the Enriquillo and Pedernales region. In 1867, the island of Alto Velo was granted to a North American company, and salt extraction began in the Beata lagoons.
One of the main attractions of Pedernales is its beaches. The city is home to some of the most stunning beaches in the Caribbean, including Bahia de las Aguilas and Playa de la Cueva. Bahia de las Aguilas is a secluded beach located in a national park that can be accessed by boat or rough roads. This beach is known for its crystal-clear waters and pristine white sand. Playa de la Cueva, on the other hand, is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. This beach is located near the city center and offers a range of activities, including swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing.
Pedernales is known for its rich cultural heritage. The city is home to a number of museums
and historical sites that offer visitors a glimpse into the region's past. The Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre is a popular museum that showcases the area's natural history and cultural heritage. The museum features exhibits on local flora and fauna, as well as artifacts from the indigenous Taíno people who once inhabited the area.
Pedernales is also known for its delicious cuisine. Some of the most popular dishes in Pedernales include sancocho, a hearty stew made with meat and vegetables, and mofongo, a dish made with mashed plantains and meat or seafood.
For those looking for adventure , Pedernales has plenty to offer. The city is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, including mountains, rivers, and waterfalls. Visitors can go hiking in the Sierra de Bahoruco National Park, or take a dip in the Rio Pedernales, a beautiful river that runs through the city.
In conclusion, Pedernales is a beautiful city that offers visitors a range of activities and attractions. From its stunning beaches to its rich cultural heritage, there is something for everyone in this charming coastal city. Whether you are looking for adventure or relaxation, Pedernales is sure to delight and inspire you.
We welcome all our blog visitors to share their experiences with excursions and activities while vacationing in Pedernales.
