PARADISE LOST To Embark On 'Embers Of Europe' Fall 2023 Tour With MY DYING BRIDE
British gothic metal pioneers PARADISE LOST will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their fourth album, "Icon" , by embarking on the "Embers Of Europe" tour in the fall. Support on the trek will come from MY DYING BRIDE .
So far the following shows have been announced:
Dec. 01 - Shepherds Bush Empire – London, UK Dec. 14 - St George's Hall – Bradford, UK
Tickets and "Icon" collectors' edition vinyl plus tickets bundles go on sale this Friday, June 2 at 10 a.m.
The tour announcement comes a little over a week after PARADISE LOST revealed it was re-recording "Icon" for a special new release. There will also be "an extra special vinyl" version of the album.
PARADISE LOST singer Nick Holmes says: "Our specific record deal around the time we signed for the 'Icon' album meant we would never actually own the rights to our music or artwork, so going forward, to reissue the album ourselves for the 30th anniversary, it was necessary to re-record and completely re-do the album cover.
"Re-recording 'Icon' has not only enabled us to release it as a series of collectors editions on vinyl but it was also great to revisit some songs from a lifetime ago. Nothing can replace those original recordings or ever will, they are a nostalgic part of all our lives but it has been a lot of fun revisiting those early MFN days once again, and I hope the end result displays that!"
"Icon" marked a departure from the death-doom sound of PARADISE LOST 's early work and was the last album to feature Matthew Archer on drums.
In February 2018, "Icon" was inducted into the Decibel "Hall Of Fame", with the magazine naming it influential to the development of the gothic metal subgenre.
Formed in Halifax, West Yorkshire, in 1988, PARADISE LOST were unlikely candidates for metal glory when they slithered from the shadows and infiltrated the U.K. underground. But not content with spawning an entire subgenre with early death/doom masterpiece "Gothic" nor with conquering the metal mainstream with the balls-out power of 1995's "Draconian Times" , they have subsequently traversed multiple genre boundaries with skill and grace, evolving through the pitch-black alt-rock mastery of 1990s classics "One Second" and "Host" to the muscular but ornate grandeur of 2009's "Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us" and "Tragic Idol" (2012),with the nonchalant finesse of grand masters. The band's "The Plague Within" (2015) and "Medusa" (2017) albums saw a much-celebrated return to brutal, old-school thinking, via two crushing monoliths to slow-motion death and spiritual defeat.
Two months ago, PARADISE LOST welcomed Guido Zima Montanarini as their official new drummer.
Last September, Finnish drummer Waltteri Väyrynen left PARADISE LOST to join OPETH . At the time, he issued a statement saying that his decision involved "absolutely no bad blood or drama whatsoever."
PARADISE LOST 's latest album, "Obsidian" , was released in May 2020 via Nuclear Blast .

The tour announcement comes a little over a week after PARADISE LOST revealed it was re-recording “Icon” for a special new release. There will also be “an extra special vinyl” version of the album.
PARADISE LOST wrote on social media: “ ‘Icon’ , our fourth album was released in 1993 and for it’s 30th anniversary, we’re re recording it and doing an extra special vinyl release. That’s all we can share for now, but watch this space for more information and a few special announcements very soon!”
“Icon” marked a departure from the death-doom sound of PARADISE LOST ‘s early work and was the last album to feature Matthew Archer on drums.
The album’s opening track ‘Ember’s Fire’ won an MTV Headbanger’s Ball viewers award for best heavy metal video of the year.
In February 2018, “Icon” was inducted into the Decibel “Hall Of Fame”, with the magazine naming it influential to the development of the gothic metal subgenre.
Formed in Halifax, West Yorkshire, in 1988, PARADISE LOST were unlikely candidates for metal glory when they slithered from the shadows and infiltrated the U.K. underground. But not content with spawning an entire subgenre with early death/doom masterpiece “Gothic” nor with conquering the metal mainstream with the balls-out power of 1995’s “Draconian Times” , they have subsequently traversed multiple genre boundaries with skill and grace, evolving through the pitch-black alt-rock mastery of 1990s classics “One Second” and “Host” to the muscular but ornate grandeur of 2009’s “Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us” and “Tragic Idol” (2012),with the nonchalant finesse of grand masters. PARADISE LOST ‘s latest album, “Obsidian” , was released in May 2020 via Nuclear Blast .
In 2008, speaking to Kerrang! about the album’s music, Nick Holmes remembered:
“We were pretty much the first band to coin the phrase ‘gothic metal’ so I don’t have a problem with that label. We’ve actually done gothier albums than Icon , but if people want to say that it sums up something that’s fine with me. At the time there was also black metal , thrash metal and everyone wanted to describe what type of something was so we went ‘Okay, we’ve got The Sisters of Mercy elements in our music, let’s call it goth metal’. We were getting better as musicians as well and I was hopefully getting better as a vocalist. When that happens you want to fine-tune what you’re doing. It’s also about not wanting to get stuck or pigeonholed into one particular musical place. We’ve kept the whole gothic thing going right throughout our career, but we did want to do something a little different. With the vocals, a lot of it was kind of shouting in key as opposed to just shouting, it’s okay singing like Beelzebub , but your voice can get into trouble if you have a big tour.”

Paradise Lost are a band hailing from Halifax, England who formed in 1988. Since debuting, they have released 14 studio albums and become one of the true pioneers of Gothic metal, making them one of the most influential metal bands of the 1980's and 90's.
Beginning life playing a preposterously heavy mix of death and doom metal, Paradise Lost were arguably one of the most fully formed metal bands of their time, releasing four demo tapes in two years when its members were barely out of secondary school. What's more is that even though the music they were playing was proudly niche and nigh on un-listenable for many metal fans, the independent label Peaceville Records could see the unbridled talent in the band, and signed them up in 1989, a little over a year after they formed. The band released their first two albums with Peaceville, debuting with 1990's “Lost Paradise” and continuing with 1991's album “Gothic”, which saw the band evolve beyond their original sound, beginning to become the band we know today.
Shortly after the release of “Gothic”, the band left their label to sign to Music For Nations, who released their third album “Shades of God” in July 1992. The band had already added keyboard sounds and female vocals to their sound but it was this album that saw the band dramatically change their overall sound, with swathes of acoustic guitar on the record combined with lead singer Nick Holmes adopting a genuine singing voice instead of his then-trademark death growl. As the 1990's went on, they went from strength to strength, building up an enormous cult following in Europe that sent their 1997 album “One Second” to the peak of the German, Swedish and Finnish album charts.
Ever since then, the band have remained one of the biggest cult acts in alternative metal, never afraid to strike out in a strange new direction while still continuing to release hit records the world over. With 14 studio albums released and counting, there doesn't seem to be a force alive able to stop Paradise Lost while they're in their prime and for that, they come highly recommended.
Live-Bewertungen
When Paradise Lost announced a London show in support of their to-be-released 15th studio album, 'Medusa', I had to snap up a ticket. Despite having been a fan since 1993's 'Icon', I'd only seen them once, a couple years previous in 2015, and they did not disappoint, so I'd been looking forward to this show since I booked it.
Support for the night came from Portuguese band Sinistro and American doom'ers Pallbearer. I'd especially been looking forward to seeing Pallbearer after discovering their third record this year. Unfortunately one of the guitarists amp head blew during the first song, but was back in the game by the second song and they played great. Sinistro did a great job of opening, sounded great and played a great set.
Finally it was time for Paradise Lost to take the stage, and just as before they did not disappoint. A great cross section of both tracks from the new album and the back catalogue, with songs spanning back to very early albums such as 'As I Die', fan favourites like 'Enchantment' and 'The Last Time', and tracks from more recent past records too like 'Beneath Broken Earth'. The band, as usual, were completely on point - just as you'd expect from a group on the eve of their 30th year as a band. No mistakes - well apart from Nick introducing the wrong song - sounded amazing, played awesomely. The crowd loved it, with a mosh pit opening up now and again, and loads of enthusiasm and appreciation.
If you're a fan, even only a partial one, and they come to town, go check them out - they put on a great show.

Formed in Halifax over 25 years ago, Paradise Lost are one of the most important metal bands of all time to a certain breed of metal fan. While it could be argued that every metal band in existence is a cult act since heavy metal in the pop charts is rarer than an edible diamond and mainstream radio play isn’t much more common. However, the influence of Nick Holmes and Greg Mackintosh’s band means that most metal movements of the past quarter of a century can be traced back to them in some way. And they also have a fan-base that could make Directioners hang their head in shame. Their following is only one part of what makes a Paradise Lost concert utterly unmissable. It’s quite something to see an audience in such rapt attention when listening to a band’s music; it’s something else entirely to watch one of the most thrillingly versatile acts in Metal. With every song comes a switch from either the pulverising doom metal of their early albums, or the electro-rock of their mid period, all the way to their more traditional metal of their recent albums and every single one of them sounds like the most natural thing in the world to them. Although it is to be expected considering the band have one of the most stable line-ups in heavy metal and have done so for as long as they’ve been around. That doesn’t mean that it’s not mind blowing to watch, no, in fact it should be a ritual for any metal fan to see them, just to see how it’s done by the band who could be the authority on Alternative Metal.
Although a large number of metal acts are considered to be cult due to their wavering appearing in modern charts, goth metal pioneers Paradise Lost can proudly boast the claim of being a true cult. The British outfit first came to attention with the large sound in the late 80s and impressively the only change in lineup has been a drummer since then. A consistency that is very rare in the metal scene, Paradise Lost have one of the best onstage rapports and an impassable ability to jam as a collective.
These guys have experienced everything together, from the tiny rooms to the huge venues and this feeds into the performance hugely. They identify the fans as both their driving force and the reason they are to take to stage night after night to perform the music they enjoy so much. There is such a large amount of mutual appreciation that you expect a mass hug-along to break out any minute whereas instead a gnarly mosh pit explodes following on from the introduction to 'Say Just Words'.
Bam! That was the bomb! Paradise Lost kicked ass and delivered. Great songs, great play, great vibe, fantastic evening. The 1st opener was not my cup of tea, then 2nd opener Pallbearer were just badly mixed: lead guitar and voice barely audible, too noisy backline. Paradise Lost instantly made a difference, even the lighting was great and pro. A few times it was a bit too obvious that some background vocals and keyboards were trigger played but I guess most guys in the audience havent noticed anyway. The sound was maybe not super superb but major league. Awesome night, they surprised me rather positively, especially the songs on the setlist were all in flow.
Every supportband was a pleasure to see and hear. The crown really could engage.
As always, PL was personable, a delight to meet and greet and very sad to see the show end. The gig was well-organised. When local tech faced challenges a great job was done by the DJ, who moved the crowd - superb job.
The band performed, as always, very professionally and the engagement with the crowd really worked well. The mix of tracks was very suitable and 'Medusa' is simply delightful.
There is a warm heart in every Yorkshireman!
Come again and god bless you.
PS: Signings before the show are an excellent opportunity inded.
We arrived during the Lucifer part of the concert, so can't comment on the performance of them. Tribulation were an excellent support for the main act of Paradise Lost, they put together a really good show.
Paradise Lost came on to a rapturous applause and cheering. The show as nothing short of amazing, playing classic track as well as songs from the Tragic Idol album. Their lat song was one of my all time favourites from Paradise Lost, 'One Second'. Thanks to the guys for performing at the Academy in Manchester, this is a great venue for any band.
Truly Excellent! After a mediocre opening act, Paradise Lost managed to turn a rather bored crowd into a gothic trance communion. From the very first notes played, I felt all of this band's history (and my own life) flow through me. I have never listened to another metal band with such a deep, full sound, expressing such sincere feelings of pain and hopelessness, and they delivered all of their musical and lyrical spirit live to a point that even the most hardcore fans would not expect.
Simply Stunning! I just didn't like Lucifer. Tribulation were amazing like at last Incineration Fest. And Paralost were great as well. I well so happy to see nick so in form. They played many doom tracks with growling and he sang them without any problem! the location was perfect anyway. KOKO is always one of the best place to see a gig!
It was, as always excellent, great sound, great performance of all the members, great voice of Nick Holmes and the musicians played what everybody waited for :) including One Second from the a little bit controversal part in their music history. Really enjoyed all the show especially it was ina small club. Great!
Paradise Lost opened strong with a solid song and maintained the audience engaged with solid favorites thought the night. They were respectful to the audience, talked to us between songs, and they were amazing live. It was definitely a great experience and I would definitely see them again.
