570-660-9465, black bear hunts and outfitters.

Are you looking for that black bear hunt of a lifetime? At Infinity Hunts, we specialize in helping you find the type of hunt and experience you want. Through our extensive research and boots-on-the-ground approach, we work with the best black bear guides and outfitters in North America’s top areas. Throughout your entire adventure, we will be there for you – from choosing the perfect hunt with the right outfitter to personal support before, during, and after the hunt. So let us put our experience and proven outfitters to work for you on your black bear hunting adventures!

Trophy Class Black Bear Hunts

While we offer many types of black bear hunts, we love finding those incredible locations throughout North America for world-class trophy black bears and putting our hunters in those camps! Our top outfitters have an excellent track record of taking 18-20 inch skulls, with several topping 20+ inches each year. Of course, finding a true 21-inch Boone and Crockett record book bear is always challenging, but we know the areas that can produce bears like this. With our extensive research and outfitter connections, we can help you find that trophy black bear you have always wanted.

Types of Black Bear Hunts

Black bear hunts take place using three primary methods – baited, hounds, and spot and stalk. Baited hunts, commonly done in several Canadian provinces and a few US states, can occur in the spring or fall and allow the hunter to look over and evaluate bears. It’s also fun to watch bears at close-range doing bear things. These hunts are typically conducted with excellent accommodations and are generally not physical. Baited hunts are great for new and experienced hunters alike.

Hunts using hounds occur in some western US states, generally in the fall. These are exciting, active hunts, usually in some great mountainous, rugged terrain. You will spend your day with a pack of hounds covering the country until you locate a track or they hit the scent of a bear. Then the chase is on!

And spot and stalk hunts are done in Canada and several western US states. Spring hunts occur when bears come out of hibernation and are feeding on new grasses, while fall hunts usually target bears feeding on berries or fish.

We often get asked about bear sizes and coloration. Contrary to popular belief, finding and taking 400 pounds plus bears is not easy. You have to hunt where they live, and old bears are smart. You will have to hunt hard to take a bear like this. Spring bears are lighter than fall bears. In reality, you score trophy bears by their skull measurements. The sum of the skull length and width most accurately represents a bear’s age and trophy class. Most trophy boars will run in the 18-20 inch class; bears over 20 inches are record-class bears.

Another popular indicator of a bear’s size is the hide measurements. You do this by taking the entire fleshed, but unsalted skin laid out flat and measuring from tail tip to nose tip and again from front claw to front claw. Add the two together and divide by two, and that’s what you get. Generally, 6 feet and larger bears are considered trophy class, and some areas can even produce 7-foot plus bears.

In most cases, the coat quality makes the trophy – in many areas where we hunt black bears, there are color phases – some will be chocolate, cinnamon, or even blonde, making for a unique and beautiful trophy.

From horseback hunts in the mountains to coastal boat-based hunts to baited hunts and running hounds in the mountains, we have numerous hunts for all weapons, many different lodging choices, and different levels of physicality. And black bear hunts are the most affordable bear hunt in North America.

Places we offer Quality Black Bear Hunts

We offer black bear hunts in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, New Mexico, Newfoundland, British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Our locations and outfitters are carefully selected based on the quality and quantity of animals and the outfitters’ track record of putting our hunters on good bears. We are passionate bear hunters here at Infinity Hunts and understand what it takes to get a big bear on the ground.

New Mexico Black Bear Hunts and Outfitters

New Mexico has some fantastic black bear hunting in the fall. We hunt scenic mountain ranges in the Carson and Santa Fe National Forests in north-central New Mexico, the Lincoln National Forest in southeast New Mexico, and the Gila National Forest in the southwest part of the state. We have some hunts that start in August; more areas open up in September and typically go through October. We offer a few spot and stalk hunts, but most are with our top-notch houndsmen over hounds. If you have never tried hunting with hounds, you are in for a treat. Most bears in New Mexico will be in the 200-300 pound class, and we take some monsters yearly. And it’s rare to harvest a bear with a jet black coat – most will be color phase bears with varying degrees of brown colorations. Hunts are lodge or hotel based usually and very affordable. Success rates run near 100% – it is customary to run bears daily on these hunts, sometimes multiple bears!

Saskatchewan Black Bear Outfitters and Hunts

Saskatchewan is hard to beat if you have dreamed of a baited black bear hunt. Spring hunts occur in May and June, and you will typically see multiple bears every evening. Often you can do some fishing for pike, walleye, or lake trout in the mornings. Fall hunts usually take place in September over bait, and sometimes you can fish or grouse hunt. There is a one bear limit in Saskatchewan, but we have some outfitters who also operate on native lands, allowing you to take a second bear. Most bears will be in the 200-350 pound class with some true 400+ pounders taken yearly. Some areas have as high as 25% color phase bears. Success rates will approach 100% on these very affordable hunts. These are also great hunts for a group of friends or a large group. Accommodations are usually comfortable lodges with great food.

Alaska Black Bear Hunts and Outfitters

Alaska has many areas with excellent black bear hunting, and some hunts around the coast produce monster 7-foot plus trophy bears yearly. Boat-based hunts will find you cruising the coastline looking for boars cruising for sows during the rut in the spring, or fishing in creeks loaded with spawning salmon in the fall. In the state’s interior, you can do spot and stalk hunts in the spring and fall and baited hunts in the spring. Often you can fish or hunt other species on these trips.

Newfoundland Black Bear Outfitters and Hunts

Newfoundland has lots of bears and some giants, and most years, we take bears in the 400-600 pound range. In the spring, we have baited hunts and some spot and stalk hunts on the woodland caribou calving grounds. Fall hunts are all spot and stalk methods primarily by glassing berry patches in somewhat open ridge country. And it’s easy to add moose or woodland caribou to the fall hunts. There are no color phase bears in Newfoundland. Newfoundland has a two-bear limit, and you can do archery, crossbow, muzzleloader, and rifle hunts.

Idaho Black Bear Hunts and Outfitters

Northern Idaho has many bears, and our outfitters use all methods to get them in front of our hunters. Spring hunts occur from late April to late June, and fall hunts in September. We will often run hounds or do spot and stalk hunting in the mornings and sit baits in the afternoon, but we can customize these hunts for you. The areas we hunt have a very high percentage of color phase bears, often approaching 70%. These hunts usually run near 100% opportunity for bears, typically in the 200-pound class, with some 300-400 pounders taken annually. These are lodge-based hunts, and we can accommodate anyone on these adventures.

British Columbia Black Bear Outfitters and Hunts

British Columbia is known for big bears. Spring spot and stalk hunts typically produce 6-foot plus bears, with some going over 7 feet with 20-plus inch skulls. And fall hunts can have some of the best mixed-bag hunting to be found anywhere in North America. Moose, mountain goat, mountain caribou, elk, black bear, wolf, and stone sheep are all in good numbers in the areas we hunt. Several regions have two bear limits, and with good age class, genetics, and food sources, a black bear hunt in British Columbia will be an incredible experience.

Montana Black Bear Hunts and Outfitters

Southwest Montana, near Yellowstone National Park, has a solid concentration of bears. We offer a very affordable spring hunt in May and June off horseback. This area works well to bring a spouse to, do touring in the morning, and head out on horseback in the afternoon for a classic spot and stalk hunt in the mountains, glassing for bears feeding on open hillsides. Bears usually are in the 5.5 to 6.5-foot class, with larger bears taken. This area also has some color phase bears, and the hunts are generally very successful.

Alberta Black Bear Outfitters and Hunts

We hunt the boreal forest region of Alberta. These are all baited hunts in the spring during May and June and the fall in September. Alberta allows you to harvest two bears. The average bear will be in the 200-350 pound class, with bears in the 350-500 pound class taken every year. About 30% of the bears will be color-phase, and there is some excellent fishing. Comfortable accommodations and near 100% success makes Alberta a great place to hunt black bear.

Oregon Black Bear Hunts and Outfitters

Oregon has a spring and a fall season and is spot and stalk only. Spring hunts require you to obtain a very easy-to-draw tag. We will help you with this. You will spend your mornings relaxing or hunting Rio grande turkeys on some private lands we can access. Then head out for an afternoon spot and stalk hunt targeting bears feeding on new grass as it emerges. Fall hunts, with over-the-counter tags, start in early August as fresh berries become ripe and continue through the fall. It is often possible on fall hunts to hunt Columbia blacktail or even Roosevelt elk with some planning. Most bears will be in the 200-pound class, with a few giants harvested each season.

We are constantly in the field seeking additional great outfitters and world-class trophy black bear hunts. So if you are looking for an excellent black bear hunt and outfitter, please contact us so we can start putting together the perfect black bear hunt for you.

A Day in The Life:

Sunday Arrival: Upon arrival at camp in the afternoon, either from being picked up in Winnipeg or driving right to camp yourself, you will be greeted by Mike and his guides. That evening you get to share stories with the other hunters as the guides prepare dinner. After dinner hunting tags and fishing licenses are filled out so you are ready to go in the morning. Depending on your group you may share a room with a fellow guest.

Monday to Thursday and Saturday:  A hearty breakfast bulks you up for a morning of fishing the lake outside the cabin. The guides will take you out to their favorite spots where you can catch Walleye, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, and much more. You return to camp around noon for lunch before you get ready to go to the stand. By mid to late afternoon your guide takes you to your stand. A radio is provided and check-in times are arranged with your guide. Your guide will come to your stand to pick you up after dark (to hide our movement). Upon harvesting a bear or wolf the guides will find and clean the bear/wolf for you. Once back at camp the bear/wolf is bagged and frozen. Dinner is often late but it is always hot and filling, however we also supply snacks for in the stand.

Friday:  You have a quick breakfast in the morning then jump into the truck for a 30 minute drive to Big Whiteshell Lake. Here we catch the boat to Crow Duck Lake Camp. Once across the lake you are picked up by safari trucks that portage everyone and the gear across to Crow Duck Lake. The owner Bill and his staff have the boats running and ready to go for the day. We keep enough Walleye for a fish fry over a fire at the edge of the lake. For everyone who has harvested by Friday they get to stay out on the lake catching Walleye and Small Mouth Bass all day. If anyone hasn't had the right Bear walk by yet they leave after lunch for their afternoon hunt.

Sunday Departure:  One last big breakfast to fill you up for your trip home. Bears/wolves are boxed for the flight or drive home. Check out is noon. If you fly a guide will drive you back to Winnipeg.

Montana Black Bear Hunts

best bear hunting trips

Montana black bear are fair game in both the fall and spring! Color phase bears in shades of cinnamon, chocolate, and blonde are seen more frequently than jet black bears. In fact, the Swan Valley is home to some of the best black bear hunting in Montana. Our bear hunts often utilize horses, which makes us a very unique option for guided bear hunts in Montana. Montana bear hunting in our area is pure fair chase, no baiting or use of dogs, in fact we can’t even use scents.

In the fall, we can hunt black bear in combination with other species hunts. In the spring, we’ll focus on bears exclusively.

The Swan Valley is one of the few areas in Montana that remains open for black bear hunting until June 15th. In the spring these animals are very active. They consolidate in numbers on the valley floor taking advantage of the new growth to bulk up after hibernation. Using a combination of horses and hiking, we’ll hunt rockslides, search old logging roads and mountain meadows for scat and sit clear cuts. Hunters can elect to take some time to fish, taking advantage of our “Cast & Blast” offering where you can have an opportunity to shoot a black bear, catch a lake trout and a northern pike all on the same adventure.

CAST AND BLAST

You can upgrade any 5 day Bear Hunt to this 6-Day fishing and hunting combination trip which allows sportsmen to fish with a spinning rod for trophy size Northern Pike and Lake Trout and hunt black bears on public land fair chase. The Spring in Montana is a great time frame to chase Northern Pike right before they spawn resulting in blistering runs while soaking in the solitude of the Swan Valley. We can even glass bears from the boat and switch gears to hunting if we find a big boar we like. We fish out of a pontoon boat or specialized trolling boat maximizing comfort and success. We allow you to mix and match your hunting and fishing days giving you a nice change of scenery and a break from the physicality of hunting.

If you are looking for the ultimate fair chase black bear hunt in the beauty of the Swan Valley, this hunt is for you!

Fantastic North Country Lodge Opportunity

Watch the video here

The Black Bear is a formidable trophy animal. Saying otherwise would be an understatement at best. Black Bears have the strength of five men, the speed of a quarter horse, hearing that can pick up the click of a rifle hammer being cocked at 50 yards, and a nose more sensitive than a bomb sniffing German Shepherd.

Whether you see one crossing the hardwood ridge or lurking in the shadows of some deep dark swamp, the hairs on the back of your neck will surely stand up, for he is an awesome creature and a challenge to hunt.

Bear hunts at North Country Lodge are “Full Service” and include full guide service, excellent meals & accommodations, transportation to & from the field, and trophy care.

Over 75% of our hunters are return clients. Compare us, and don’t settle for less.

For 19 years, I’ve had the best time at the best place in Maine to bear hunt! When I first came to NCL to bear hunt I was not sure of this new adventure. I must say the Goodman family couldn’t have made me feel more at ease. The lodging and food are great and they put a lot of time and energy into making the bear hunt a great experience! Nineteen years and more to go! Thank you for all you guys do! Kim Spade  Guided Bear with hounds – $3,850 New this year we are offering an opportunity to hunt bear with a team of hounds.  Hound hunting is fast pace, exciting and not only offers an opportunity for harvesting a larger than average bear, but you will have higher success rate.  This package allows for 3 days of hunting, up to 6 days lodging and meals.  Add a non hunting observer for $950.00.  Currently open for weeks September 29th- October 6th and  October 6th-13th, 2024

Maine bear hunting

The Maine Black Bear hunting package at North Country Lodge is fully guided. We strive to make your hunt a successful and enjoyable one. Once you arrive, you leave the details to us.

North Country Lodge hunters use the time proven method of hunting from stands over baited areas. Our guides begin operations well in advance of the season – preparing shooting lanes, stands, blinds and baiting.

We leave for the hunting areas directly after lunch and hunt until dark. The largest percentage of Black Bear are taken during the few hours before sunset.

We transport you to and from your hunting site in an air-conditioned vehicle – no getting lost, no breaking down or blowing your tires on rough remote logging roads. There is no need for you to have a 4×4, and if you fly to Maine, you can save by renting an economy vehicle.

Your guide will remain in the area, listening for your shot. You can also call or text him at any time. Although we are in very remote forests, we are fortunate to have Cell Phone coverage in our hunting area.

Your bear hunt includes:

1) Full Guide Service

  • Five days of Bear hunting

“I sincerely thank you for a wonderful week of hunting, and being spoiled! Superlatives which come to mind would not do justice to describe the quality of the experience that I had at North Country Lodge. You certainly do everything in your power to assure your clients of a successful and refreshing week in the wilderness of Maine.” David R. Myers

Bear Hunting Season

Black Bear hunting in Maine begins in late August and runs for four weeks. We hunt on 600 square miles of prime Black Bear habitat. We can assure that you will be hunting over an active site regardless of which week you choose to hunt.

Seasons for 2024 are:

  • August 25th to August 31st (Check in on Sunday, August 25, Depart Saturday, 31st)
  • September 1st to 7th (Check in on Sunday, September 1, Depart Saturday, September 7)
  • September 8th to 14th (Check in on Sunday, September 8, Depart Saturday, September 14)
  • September 15th to 21st (Check in on Sunday, September 15, Depart Saturday, September 21)

Question: Which hunting week is best?

Answer: The one that fits your schedule best! Although weather can play a major factor, bear are actively wandering and feeding during the full season. Each North Country Lodge hunter will be hunting on an actively visited site – regardless whether during the first week or the last. Massive trophies are taken during all four weeks.

So, come hunt when it is best for you! First week or last week, we’re here to guide you on a fantastic hunt.

Maine’s Bear population

maine black bear hunting

Northern Maine has enjoyed an ever increasing Black Bear population. The largest concentration is in Aroostook County, the area in which we hunt.

Maine’s bear biologists conservatively estimate the Black Bear population to be in excess of 35,000 bears – and it continues to grow due to an impressive game management program.

Your Hunting Stand

Unlike many outfitters who have limited resources, North Country Lodge maintains many more active stands than we have hunters. This allows your guide to move you from one stand to another if necessary to improve your chances of a score.

Each North Country Lodge guide will assure every hunter a fresh opportunity at a trophy regardless of when you choose to book your hunt.

Our tree stands are constructed with both safety and comfort in mind. They have been located with great care to afford you the very best concealment possible. You will be on a stand that we can guarantee has active bear visitation.

Tree stands are typically 14’ high, and are constructed with a strong steel frame to assure your safety, with camo covers. Ground blinds can accommodate one or two hunters. Stands are positioned for either right or left handed shooters with rifle, handgun, crossbow or bow.

Bear Hunting Weapons

A Black Bear is an extremely tough animal. Accuracy and shot placement is crucial no matter what weapon you choose.

Rifle hunters will be shooting up to 50 yards. Handgun and bow hunters will be at 20 yards or less. Scope users must set magnification low (1.5x to 4x) for optimum sighting at close range.

  • Rifle – A well place round from a 30 cal. rifle will do the job. However, large calibers are generally recommended.
  • Black Powder/Muzzleloaders – we recommend 50 caliber.
  • Handguns – hunters typically use a 44 or 500 magnums.
  • Bows and crossbows – These are also very popular, with 7/8 inch broadheads being the minimum size.

Firearm and archery ranges are located at the lodge for double checking and fine tuning your sights before and during your hunt.

Careful Trophy Preparation

Trophy care begins when you shoot. Rarely does a bear drop in its tracks. They are very hardy beasts. Your guide will be there to go into action when your black bear runs. Your guide will track and retrieve him for you. This is an exciting part of the hunt, and you will be a participant!

Back at the Lodge, your guide will skin and prepare the hide for trophy mounting, taking full measurements for your taxidermist. Then the meat will be deboned, sectioned and frozen for your trip home.

Give us a call!

Set aside a week in your busy schedule to enjoy the wonderful experience of hunting Maine Black Bear at North Country Lodge. We look forward to your visit.

What a great week my son Jake and I had. Your facilities are fantastic and better than described in your brochure and video. The guide was fantastic – Knowledgeable, friendly, helpful. We could tell he wants the trip to be enjoyable no matter the outcome. I was lucky to spend time recovering the meat the one day and tracking a bear another. It added to the experience. Finally, the food was fantastic. Couldn’t ask for anything more there. Kurt Schuler

The Great Alaskan Grizzly Hunt

Are you ready for the adventure of a true Alaskan Grizzly Hunt? The Grizzly is the largest of all bears is in the beautiful wild Alaskan land. A Native Alaskan Tom Gray has lived here all his life; living off of the land and sea. You won’t meet a more pleasant and knowledgeable guide to find that trophy bear to bring home. Whether you hunt by bow or rifle, the hunt is tailored to you. You will track your bear so you will know when the best time to shoot.

Grizzly bear Hunt

Our Bears are Barren Ground Grizzlies. Most of our bears are 7 to 7 1/2 foot bears

(However, we have killed 8-9 foot bears!)

Hunting Camp

Alaskan NW Adventures camp is ideally located off of the Niukluk River between the village of Council and White Mountain.

We run jet boats that will pass through water only inches deep. Running the river can be an adventure in itself with us as some places are very shallow. The rivers are clear and you can see all the fish as we run with the boat. Being raised on our rivers Tom knows where the best places to hunt and fish.

Beautiful Bear in Maine’s West Branch Region

Black bear hunting is our livelihood – not just a seasonal sideline. It is our full time commitment to make your Foggy Mountain black bear hunt a complete and memorable experience.

The Most Productive Black Bear Hunting Outfitter in Maine, the United States or Canada.

You want a guide who produces consistent black bear kills even in years when natural adversities exist – years when inexperienced guides and hunters fail to produce.

Maine’s Foggy Mountain Guide Service was founded by Wayne Bosowicz – regarded as the dean of black bear hunting guides.

Foggy Mountain’s close knit staff of fully licensed Maine guides set the world standard that others can only dream of achieving. And no expense is spared to continually raise that standard.

You have provided my son and I with a fabulous time for three years in a row. The hunting and site locations are outstanding. You and your guides could not be more knowledgeable or helpful. All of your support people are very hospitable and friendly. The conversations during meals (which are terrific) and non hunting time were great fun and very enjoyable. Brandon, you are a true sportsman and professional. We would certainly recommend you to other hunters. Leon Tragger Sr & Jr, Pennsylvania, September 2017

Wayne has spent decades developing the bear habitat and prime hunting stands in the best bear hunting territory of Maine. He has passed his knowledge and skills to a privileged handful of Maine Guides like Brandon Bishop whose sole job is to see to it that you have the best possible opportunity to fulfill your hunting goals.

As a result, record-book black bear are consistently taken in Maine year after year. Our trophy room shows the results.

Trophy black bear at Foggy Mountain

Unsurpassed opportunity to hunt a Trophy Black Bear

We strive to give our hunters the shooting opportunities expected of a truly world-class hunting outfitter. This requires knowledge, skill, effort, advance preparation, and experience.

Bear hunting is our life, so no matter how you cut it, a part time guide can not give a full time commitment.

I want to thank you and your group. We could not have asked for a better time. Everyone in our group saw bears, and the area to hunt is some of the best I’ve ever seen. Larry Salerno, Seneca Falls, New York, September 2016.

You kill’em, You Grill’em – We take care of the rest

Foggy Mountain will track and retrieve your game, field dress and skin it. We prepare the meat and hide for your trip home.

Our freezers will preserve the fresh quality of your meat and hide. We prepare your trophy for your taxidermist, or we can introduce you to one of our highly skilled local specialists. Meat cutting and packaging is also available locally.

Private & Flexible Accommodations

Unlike hunts with most outfitters, lodges and sporting camps, Foggy Mountain’s guests are not doubled up in a bunk house or room with other guests. Your party will enjoy the privacy of your own sleeping room, and the good night’s sleep that is important for a good hunt.

You have a choice of lodging options – whether you come alone, with a large group, with your spouse or whole family. Both American or Housekeeping Plans are available.

Thank you for the awesome hunt. I am extremely happy with my first bear. I can’t wait to come back and do it again. The cabin that you put my wife and I in was very nice. As you know, my wife is particular on where she stays and it was above even her standards. This has been one of the best hunting trips I have ever been on, not only killing the bear but catching smallmouth in the river and seeing all the additional wildlife was amazing. I can’t thank you enough. Aaron Lehnen, Middletown, Missouri, September 2012.

Complete information and tips

When you book a hunt with us, you will receive a complete confirmation kit including detailed information on equipment and clothing, plus graphic illustrations of optimum shooting angles.

My wife and I had a remarkable time while hunting with you. The whole experience for both of us will be remembered forever. Even though she didn’t hunt she told me several times that she didn’t want to go home. The lakeside time was very relaxing for her. When I did kill a bear we both were delighted beyond words. Like I told you when I left, ‘I will be back’. Michel “Scott” Stirn, Brookville, IN, September 2017
Thanks for the great time. I will never forget all the fantastic things we experienced in such a short time. Getting that bear was icing on the cake. Joe Bowman, Hamilton, Indiana, September 2016.
Thanks for a great visit and a great hunt the first week of the season. Brandon did an excellent job! He was easy to hunt with and was more than willing to share his knowledge of bear hunting and the area we were hunting. The hospitality and accommodations were fantastic. Frank L. FitzSimons, Summerville, South Carolina, September 2015.
Thanks again for an awesome outdoors adventure. It doesn’t get any better than Foggy Mountain. The staff made my stay feel like being at home. Your guide did a wonderful job guiding me. He was a true pro and I enjoyed his knowledge of Maine wildlife. Thanks again and I’ll see you next year. Eric Meschke, Jackson, MI, September 2014.
Even competitors agree that Foggy Mountain is the best black bear outfitter in the world. Dick Metcalf, Shooting Times, Handgunning Magazine

Our guests appreciate our skills and efforts. Read their actual comments and find out why!

“Life is full of surprises…Your bear hunt shouldn’t be one of them!”

We know that a bear hunt is a major event in many folk’s lives, so we take it very seriously. You can arrive with confidence, not apprehension.

Fellow Hunters, I had the great pleasure of bow hunting at Foggy Mountain’s West Branch Camp the second week of the 2017 bear season. Brandon and his guides went beyond my expectations to provide an enjoyable, relaxing and successful experience. I highly recommend booking a hunt with these guys and I guarantee you will enjoy a great experience in the Maine wilderness. Dan Geer, Farmington, NY, September 2017

Maine Bear Hunts

Hunt in perhaps the most beautiful country in the world. You will be surrounded by an explosion of fall foliage color and you will never be too far from a delicious Maine lobster dinner.

Foggy Mountain’s most popular bear hunts are in Maine’s two most bear infested regions. These areas are on private lands with access controlled by gates, as are 95% of our total hunting territories.

Bear hunting success is the same in both areas, but our accommodations are different:

  • Lodging for Bear Hunts in Maine’s Highlands, Katahdin & Moosehead Region is housekeeping style (each cabin has a full kitchen).
  • Lodging for Bear Hunts in Maine’s West Branch Region is American Plan (meals included).
I want to tell you what a great time we had thanks to your excellent organization, Foggy Mountain Guide Service. I’m ready to round up a hunting partner for next year. D.L. Roy Harrington, Mathews, NC, September 2017

Thank you for a great time at bear camp. I had a great time. I got to see everything I hoped for. Had my chance at the bear of my dreams and saw a bear come in from a ladder stand. Two very high things on my bucket list. I’m already starting to save up to make the trip back up next year. Phil Peltier, West Springfield, MA, September 2015.

Got home at 4am Sunday morning. Grandkids wanted me to get them up to see the bear. Then got it into the freezer. It was well cooled and dry so all was good. Slept a few hours then kids woke me up with breakfast in bed and then we cut him up. Good bit of meat, good bear! Steve Stratton, Flushing, OH, September 2017
Thank you and your staff again for the time we had on our bear hunt. I am tickled with my bear. I wanted an above average bear with a dark muzzle and no V. That is exactly what I got. I can’t wait to get the mount. You have a first rate operation. Cindy Chihasz, Abbeville, SC, September 2015.
I really had a great time with you guys. The lunch and all that your family put on. All you guys did a great job…I truly hope to get there again. Ken Copella, Clifton Springs, NY, September 2016.
We did not get a bear but had a great time. Brandon was great. He has a great personality and seemed very knowledgeable. My wife and I hope to be back again next year for another try. James Miller, Thorntown, Indiana, September 2015.
You have a first rate operation. I was impressed with Brandon. His personality, knowledge and effort that he put into helping us with our bears was much appreciated. Charles Chihasz, Abbeville, South Carolina, September 2015.

Bear Hunter Comments

Thank you for the incredible job you did to make my recent archery bear hunt in Maine's West Branch an awesome success. I've been fortunate enough to hunt many parts of the world, and I rarely meet someone as capable as your guide. It's often difficult to find a professional hunter who knows what it takes to make a good bow hunt - he knows. I look forward to returning to hunt with him again. Chuck Darnall, Whitehouse, TX, September 2015.
I can't tell you how happy I am with this year's hunt – and not because I got a great bear. Everything was just great: the weather, the other hunters and the hunting. Your guide was an absolute delight to be around. I think he was as excited about my bear as I was. It's going to be a long year until I get back. I can't wait. It's always the high point of my year. Gary Chamberlain, Sandusky, NY, September 2014.
Best Trip Ever! I wanted to let you know, that Jack, Ryan and I had the best time ever…We will definitely be up there next year, same time. Lori Clark, Dallastown, PA, September 2015.
Thank you and your team for a great experience. I got my bear on the second day and it was an experience of a lifetime. David M. Karchner, CT, September 2015.
During the hunt we had 2 flat tires. One of them Guy fixed and the other Brandon and Jason came to the field and fixed for us. This meant a lot as my wife was by herself with the vehicle and I was at another site. James Miller, Thorntown, IN, September 2015.
We would like to give our thanks to you, our guide, and the staff for a great and memorable experience. It is now obvious to us why people come from all over the world to hunt with you. Harry Marquiss, Agawam, MA, September 2014.
I want to tell you what a great time I had hunting at the West Branch in September. It was a great camp with a bunch of good folks and the staff and guides were great. Hope to see you next year. Tony Masino, Bowie, MD, September 2013.
Just a word about the great hunt that was afforded me there in Maine. I have been to Montana twice, one producing a 5x5 bull, and two hunts for black bear. The hunt in September at Foggy Mountain was the best of all hunts I have been on. Your professionalism and caring about all aspects of the hunt, quarters, food and making sure that our wants and needs were taken care of. You are the very best and finest bear outfitter in all the northeast. Thanks. Ron Marlett, Auburn, New York, September 2011.

Where to hunt bear.

If you look at the BookYourHunt.com Hunting Map, you’ll see that bear hunting opportunities seem to cover all the Northern Hemisphere, from Atlantic to Pacific coast in North America, and from Kamchatka to Scandinavia in Eurasia. Three species of bear are legal to hunt at present. The black bear can be hunted all over the USA and Canada. Brown bear (grizzly) hunting opportunities exist in Eurasia, Alaska and the Yukon. The Himalayan bear can be legally hunted only in Russia.

Bears are one of the world's top predators. From black bear in North America to the ill-tempered grizzly to the world's largest land predator, the brown bear of Alaska and Russia, bears have long been a passion and challenge for hunters. Let BookYourHunt help you fulfill your next bear adventure!

Price distribution

Black bear is the most affordable species to hunt, with hunts beginning at $1,500. On the other end of the spectrum are the North American brown (grizzly) bears that can cost $15,000 or more. Brown bear hunting opportunities in Europe and Russia may be as cheap as under $2,000 or as expensive as an Alaskan hunt, depending on location and hunting methods. Himalayan bear hunting costs between $5,000 and $7,500.

As you already know, there isn’t just one “bear”. As many as three legally huntable species exist, and even within the species there is much variation. What with color phases of the black bear, that can vary from black to almost white! Read how differences in habitat influence bear hunting - and bear hunting prices - in Russia.

When to hunt Bear?

Bear hunting dates depend on the bear’s greatest evolutionary adaptation: winter slumber. They center on the periods when the bruins are feeding actively to accumulate enough fat to last them through the winter (in autumn), or to make up for the fast (in spring). On the Pacific Coast the best opportunities for bear hunting often coincide with salmon runs.

Hunting methods All hunting methods (16)

Humans devised many ways of bear hunting. Sometimes bears are taken with dogs, packs of hounds in North America or one or two dogs of local breeds in Eurasia. Spot-and-stalk hunting is also possible in the wide open spaces of the Arctic and the American West, and so is still-hunting along salmon rivers. Calling a bear by imitating the sounds of its typical prey (such as fawn in distress) may also be effective. But by far the most common way of bear hunting is waiting for them on high seats or blinds positioned near artificial bait or a natural food source, such as an oat field.

Brown bear, a.k.a. grizzly (genetic studies confirm it is the same species) historically occupied all temperate climate zones in Europe, Asia and America. Habitat loss and conflicts with humans have dramatically reduced its range. With the future of grizzly hunts in the Lower 48 still uncertain, the only two areas in North America that offer brown bear hunting are Alaska and Yukon. Russia is the prime alternative for an American who is looking for affordable bear hunting opportunities. Other countries where brown bear season is open include Estonia and Croatia.

Why hunt Bear?

Bear hunting is a very emotional issue, as you can see in all debates about hunting. In the ages past humans had many reasons to hunt bears: delicious and highly nourishing meat and fat, warm skin, and getting rid of an unwelcome neighbor that will not miss an opportunity to kill livestock, maraude fields, and may maul and kill people. All these reasons are far from meaningless today. But it’s an open question what is the biggest drive for bear hunters - meal, rug and trophy book entry, or the challenge and the excitement of overcoming an intelligent and dangerous opponent.

Wagonhound is fortunate to see a broad spectrum of color phase bears, making our bear hunts highly sought after. Black bears are the most sought-after trophy animal for seasoned and novice hunters alike. Mature black bears are wise to the ways of humans, and this, combined with their natural primitive instincts, make for an adrenaline-pumping and challenging hunt.

Your hunt will take place in the heart of the Laramie Mountain Range, where you will experience a vast stretch of pristine wilderness that provides the kind of habitat that produces trophy-quality black bears. Wagonhound Outfitters offers black bear hunts in the spring during the month of May.

Our guided hunts are designed to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience. With approximately 300,000 privately owned acres of prime wildlife habitat, you’ll enjoy a hunt that you’ll be telling tales about for the rest of your life.

Here’s what you need to know about your upcoming adventure hunting Wyoming black bear.

What to Expect on Your Hunt

Hunters enjoy our 5-star accommodations and have plenty of room to relax in our 8,000 sq. ft. lodge. This is a great option for hunters who like to travel in a group and bring a spouse or family. Don’t let these amazing accommodations fool you, as we take our hunting very seriously and value the experience and quality of the hunt as much as the stay. Our guides intimately know the best hunting grounds and movement of the black bear on a day-to-day basis. Our black bear hunts are done over bait with good success, and during the day, hunters will often accompany guides to check baits and generally hunt in the evenings.

Guided Alaska Grizzly Bear Hunts

Hunt grizzly bear in the arctic with experienced alaskan guides, grizzly bear hunts.

Every April, we return to the frozen salmon spawning grounds to hunt the arctic grizzly bear. Setting up small camps on the edge of our hunting area, we start looking for bears that have recently left hibernation. We make use of the continual arctic sunlight to hunt nocturnal bears. The large boars in this area spend this time feeding on last fall’s salmon deposits. This is a hunt conducted ambush style, where patience is key to our high Grizzly Bear hunt success rate. Due to the rich nutritional value of the bears’ feed, they grow larger than most northern grizzlies, 7-8 foot being our common take. Wolves are commonly seen feeding on salmon during these hunts,  and wolves can be taken as a secondary animal.

After break up in mid-May, we provide hunts for arctic grizzly on the south slopes of the Brooks Range. Shortly after leaving hibernation, grizzly bears move onto the hillsides to feed on the new spring growth. We use this to our advantage, spotting bears from great distances and making foot stalks. Because of the poorer food quality and longer winters, the arctic grizzly is smaller than the bears we hunt in our southern grounds. However, due to living in this northern environment these bears do grow an incredibly thick coat, and tend to be much lighter in color.

The Alaska Grizzly, Ursus arctos , is the largest predator of our hunting area. Arctic Grizzly Bears are one of the main killers of caribou and moose calves in the spring. Coming out of hibernation in late April to early May, the bears start looking for the closest food source to make up for lost weight from the winter’s slumber. Salmon left over from the fall run or the early growth on south sloping hills are easy pickings for spring bears. In our hunting concession, spring grizzly bear hunting is extremely effective because we can focus our efforts on areas with high food concentrations.

Accommodations

Although there are many factors outside of our control during an Alaskan hunt, there are measures we take to insure a comfortable stay no matter what Mother Nature decides to throw at us. Camps are strategically placed to insure solid hunting locations within a close walking distance. As most of our falls hunting camps are accessed via float plane, we are typically set up on or near a lake shore. Guests are housed in canvas Sibly tents, heated with a wood stove and furnished with cots. A cook/mess tent is also set up to allow comfortable dining during adverse weather conditions. We take great efforts to prepare home cooked breakfasts and dinners that will satisfy any hungry hunter. While out hunting, lighter pack lunches are packed. All camps are supplied with at least one satellite communication device and appropriate survival gear.

Travel and Logistics

All of our guided trips originate in Fairbanks Alaska. We suggest booking a flight with an arrival date at least one day before the start date of your trip. There are several options of hotels near the airport that provide shuttle services. On day one of your trip we will pick you up at your hotel. If you have not already purchased your hunting license and tags, we will stop by Fish and Game before leaving town. From Fairbanks, we drive four hours north to Circle City. In this small rural community, your pilot will meet you with the float plane on the Yukon River. Most of our camps are accessed via float equipped Cessna 180. As we have to follow the strict laws of gravity, we ask that you keep your gear under 60lbs. Most flights to camp are an hour to an hour and a half. Due to the unpredictability of Alaska’s weather it is best to leave some flexibility in your travel plans. At times, delays of several days may occur due to severe weather keeping our airplanes grounded.

All of our guides are highly experienced and professional. Owner, Charlie Jagow, was raised hunting and trapping in the region, this experience has given him, not only knowledge of the area, but also a personal connection to the refuge and its wild places. Many of our hunting guides also live in the bush and have a life time’s experience worth of hunting in the Arctic. Hunting is a way of life for us. There are no schools or college courses available to train a guide; instead, this highly skilled profession is only learned from hands-on experience and apprenticeship. All of our guides have dedicated themselves to perfecting these skills. Guiding is not a job for us, it’s a passion. We love assisting our guest in the pursuit of a life time!

There are opportunities to fish in most of our hunting camps. Some of the smaller rivers provide some of the best grayling fishing the state has to offer. Many of our lake camps are inhabited by both pike and graying. Light tackle, spinners and spoons are our choice for catching both species.

Bear Hunting with Cody

Spring Bear Hunts

Our spring bear hunts start April 15th and ends June 15th. We truly have the best bear hunting in the state of Montana. With every variation of color-phase black bears (brown, cinnamon, chocolate, brown, blonde and red) it is a great opportunity to harvest a truly amazing black bear. We take pride in harvesting older age class bears that are true trophies. Montana opened up hound hunting for bears in spring of 2022. We offered this to several clients as an upgrade and it was highly successful! Get your adrenalin rush, get in on the chase and hear the dogs baying. Our method of hunting is glassing clear cuts, south facing slopes, clover covered logging roads that are gated, and calling. During a spring bear you can expect to see many bears depending on the weather as our area has a very high concentration of black bears.

Fall Bear Hunts

Our fall bear/predator hunts start in September and run through November. Early in the fall season the black bears are filling their bellies on the last remaining berry crop in preparation of the upcoming hibernation they will soon be faced with. We glass and use the spot and stalk method at this time of the year. The bears can be seen this time of the year at all times of the day. During the fall bear season hunters can add elk and deer to their bear hunt.  You can also add the wolf to your list once the bear has been harvested.  Locate, call and pursue the wolf.  What a great predator adventure!

We are fortunate to have all color phases of black bear in our area. There are black, brown, cinnamon, blond, and black with a white diamond on the chest. This area has one of the highest color-phase ratings in the state. We also border a giant indian reservation that promotes an endless supply of older age class bears.

Bear Hunting Adventures by our Hunters

"The Chase with Leigh & Travis travels the world sharing camp with all types. This was an experience I will never forget. The beauty of Montana is not the only pictures in my head its the passion and beauty of the Carr Family is what will keep us coming back for years. True Montana Adventure! I shot my biggest bear to date and it was with a muzzleloader spot and stalk. Thanks Cody, KoLiss, Darren and everyone else that made it happen!"

"Cody Carr’s Hunting Adventures is an exceptional outfitting business. All of the guides are extremely well knowledged in the areas where the hunts occur. The accommodations are also fantastic! I have been successful in 2 out of 3 hunts so far. The spring 2015 bear hunt will be my fourth hunt with Cody Carr Hunting Adventures. Both of my sons have also experienced guided hunts with Cody Carr’s Hunting Adventure’s and our family has never been disappointed."

"I Paul Snarski had a great!!! time!!! This is the second time I have hunted with Cody. The last time was a bear hunt. This trip was also a bear hunt and I harvested a bear each time. I will be returning over Thanksgiving week for a elk/deer hunt. I hunted in the state of Montana 15 times in the last 20 years with three different outfitters. I would rate Cody Carr Hunting Adventures at the top of my experiences."

"I’ve been to Cody Carr’s about half a dozen times. Each time I have left with the trophy I came for. There’s tons of game, great people and amazing scenery. I’ve hunted enough places to know that Cody and his crew run a first-rate outfit. I’m constantly impressed by the professionalism displayed by all the people working to make my hunt a fantastic adventure. Cody will tailor your hunt to fit your goals and ability. That can mean spending your night’s miles deep in the wilderness in a spike camp, or coming back to the lodge to a warm bed every night. I’ve spent time with other outfitters that view clients as no more than a paycheck, their work is really done once you’re in camp. To Cody, you’re a hunter first… to be successful and enjoy your time off work is first and foremost. If I’m hunting the Rockies, I’m hunting with Cody Carr."

"Cody, just wanted to let you know how much Pam and I enjoyed our time with you, your family and guides. The trip was hands down the best I have ever experienced. You and your family strengthened my faith. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent in the lodge with the group. If I get to build my retirement home it will look a lot like your lodge. Wow, how cool! With the accommodations and your wife’s cooking, it doesn’t get better than this! I can’t wait to share camp with you again this coming fall. Strange how I came out with the sole purpose to shoot a bear and left with so much more than what a dead bear could provide. Take care, Tom."

"Looking for a GREAT HUNT??? You Should Choose Cody Carr hunting Adventure’s, Plains, Montana. We have hunted there three different times and had a great experience with lodging and excellent accommodations. We hunted bear, mule deer, and elk and was successful every hunt. It was mountainess terrain and they have great guides. Cody will go to any extent to make you successful on your hunt and they treat you like family. We are excited for our 4th trip that is planned for November."

"I john Ellis felt that everything was perfect. By the end of the hunt I didn’t want to leave, it really felt like it was home away from home. Everybody there is extremely friendly. I will definitely be back and already booked a bear hunt for next year."

California Indians made this hidden valley a resting place during their annual migration to the Pacific Ocean. The Peachtree Ranch is approximately 50,000 acres. The Indians found plentiful numbers of game for hunting. Here were quantities of stone to form arrow heads for hunting.

Spanish Ranchos eventually gave way to the influence of the U. S. Dollar. The Peachtree Ranch became headquarters for cattle barons Miller and Lux. It was Miller and Lux who saved the Tule Elk from total extinction. You now have the opportunity to hunt these magnificent animals on a ranch where the very people that saved the elk, ran cattle.

During the late 1920’s the Peachtree Ranch became an escape for many famous cowboys of that era, like Tom Mix, Gene Autry and Will Rogers just to name a few.

Rifle hunters will shoot at distances of 75 yards or less, and hand gunners will be shooting 20-30 yards. The black bear demands shooting excellence before he will fall to a hunter.
