Saving Country Music

But Wait, I Thought George Strait Retired from Touring?

If you love country music, you probably love George Strait, and for good reason. He didn’t get the nickname “King” George by accident. For over four decades he’s been one of the most consistent and credible country artists to ever ply the craft, and he’s indisputably one of the greatest country music artists of all time. George Strait announced his final tour called “The Cowboy Rides Away Tour” on September 26, 2012 at a press conference from the Country Music Hall of Fame. Consisting of 21 concerts in 2013 and 26 concerts in 2014, the tour ended in Arlington, Texas, at AT&T Stadium on June 7, 2014 with Strait playing “in the round” with many special guests. The final concert was also made into a CD/DVD set. Strait was totally honest at the time of his final tour that he wasn’t disappearing from the public spotlight or retiring from making records entirely. He made sure to specifically state he would still play a show or two here or there. He just wouldn’t go on any actual tours henceforth. For the most part, George Strait has stuck to that proclamation, only playing one-off stadium shows about two or three times a year or so, along with a couple of Las Vegas residencies which also make sense and don’t really break the “touring” promise. But arguably, all that just changed. Announced on Tuesday (9-12), George Strait will be going on a 9-date stadium run with Chris Stapleton in 2024. It’s being billed as an extension of the sold-out and sometimes record-breaking shows the pair played during 2023 in Seattle, Milwaukee and Columbus, OH. Little Big Town was part of this stadium show run as well, and will continue in that opening spot in 2024. Obviously in one respect, it’s super cool to get more opportunities to see George Strait in concert, especially with Chris Stapleton who has graduated to being a stadium draw himself. More George is better than less George. But you do start to feel bad for all of the folks who spent ungodly amounts of money on tickets to attend what they believed was going to be the farewell tour, worrying they’d never get an opportunity to see George Strait again. Really this is a tale as old as time in music. Certain artists have faked out their fan bases with farewell tours four or five times. Barbara Streisand comes to mind, as well as KISS. Motley Crue even signed legally binding contracts before their final tour, criticizing other bands for lying to their fan bases for the deceptive practice, all before ripping the contracts up and touring once again. Though some of these instances are certainly tied to marketing, it also has to do with how performers just can’t get performing out of their blood. There is nothing like the thrill of standing out there on stage singing to people and hearing the roar of the crowd, especially when that roar is coming from a stadium. And the simple fact is George Strait (and Chris Stapleton) are making lots and lots of money off of this, all while having to only work a few weekends a year. Do nine dates constitute a “tour,” especially when you can extend them to 12 dates when taking into consideration the 2023 shows? Some of the headlines announcing the new Strait/Stapleton dates seem to think so, and so do many fans. It’s at least a limited tour. Again, it’s great to see Strait out there once again. But don’t spend money like it may be the last time you’ll ever get to see him. Because it’s probably not. – – – – – – – – Tickets to most shows go on sale on Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. local time via GeorgeStrait.com , with tickets to the Jacksonville show on sale on Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. local time. I don’t think George doing this is as bad as some of the bands and singers that do this. To use the poster boys for pulling farewell tour 25 The Who, who are now down to two founding members who need auto tune backing tapes and key changes to get through the show because of age related singing and playing problems (one of the most heinous examples The Scream Roger Daltrey does on Won’t get fooled again when singing live is now him lip syncing from Won’t Get Fooled Again) George still can sing and still has a stage presence. There’s also the fact that it’s just nine dates and not something massive

' src=

One of the first VHS concerts I ever saw was The Who’s Farewell Concert…from 1982.

' src=

KISS did their first farewell tour in 2000. Then, within 5 or 6 years they’re touring again. Ace leaves. Peter Criss wanted a more generous contract and was let go. Paul Stanley explained “the 2000 Farewell Tour was for the original lineup of KISS.” As if anyone ever thought KISS would stop touring when they announced their first farewell tour.

Trigger, to answer your question regarding whether or not 9 dates constitutes a tour? (Although it wasn’t really a direct question) I can’t say how many dates would be considered a tour but 9 shows over 7 months doesn’t seem to fit the criteria. Hell, if I lived in any of those cities or cities nearby, I’d be ecstatic to see King George again. Take advantage and see him while you can.

' src=

I always thought it was crazy that my brother paid to see The Who’s Final Concert simulcast at a theater in 1982! George has earned the right to do as he pleases and its not like its a 30-50 city tour. Let the buyer beware, but I would assume no matter the cost, people were happy to see George in that “final” tour anyways. Not many times you get to see a legend!

' src=

Would be nice to see George. But really looking forward to a new album!

' src=

Yes, he just recorded one according to Brent Mason on Instagram, as well as George’s producer Chuck Ainlay

“But you do start to feel bad for all of the folks who spent ungodly amounts of money on tickets to attend what they believed was going to be the farewell tour, worrying they’d never get an opportunity to see George Strait again.” ——-

Are you suggesting Strait ripped them off? More important, are you suggesting that all the folks who went to his farewell tour shows now feel that way, that lifelong Strait fans who were in seventh heaven nine years ago, singing along to “Amarillo By Morning,” “Love Without End, Amen,” “The Fireman,” and the rest, don’t still feel that the concert they saw was worth the price they paid to see it? Strongly disagree.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Definitely didn’t say that Strait ripped anyone off. Are there people who feel a little deceived because they paid $850 a ticket to see what they believed was the last show by Strait they would ever see, and now Strait is coming back to their specific market? Absolutely there are, and I’ve seen their testimonials online, and received their emails when these shows were announced.

That doesn’t mean that anyone’s original experience on his farewell tour is somehow tarnished. It just means you feel conflicted over this.

' data-tf-not-load src=

So, wonder who might go again and again?? Vs those who find, TEN YEARS later, their 2013 experience is NOW somehow devalued? If that’s true, that’s ridiculous and narcissistic on ur part. It’s ALL about u suddenly feeling, what? The Greatest and by far the most accomplished singer/performer of all time decided to chance that his fans will forgive him. Respectfully and seriously, what is the alternative for him? Don’t “tour” again ever because it’s all about u YOUR wanting to remember that 2013 experience as it was, and this what? Diminishes that in YOUR mind? Sorry for ur feelings. He should be bound by his decision ten years ago? He should do it free? Seriously what is the GOAT’s responsibility to YOU and others who paid all that money and now what? Seriously what’s ur solution? If u have none, but you’re still salty? Fair enough. It’s America. But wow,,,that sucks for u and anyone else who allows him or herself to be in ANY way egregiously harmed because the nicest, most pleasant (and most decorated, honored, and accomplished) Superstar performer of all time changed his mind. TEN YEARS LATER.

Its been stated by George from years that he retired from the kind of tour that comes to your hometown. The types of tours that are 60+ shows a year.

9 stadium concerts is nothing really. And if you want to see George in concert, there’s a good chance that 95% of his fans will need to travel to see these shows.

George has been doing 8 stadium concerts a year for quite some time now. Not sure why anyone would be upset about this or find it newsworthy

' data-tf-not-load src=

Strait hasn’t done a 60 date tour since the early 80’s. The height of the George Strait Country Music Festival was only 20 dates. He probably on average only ever toured 18-20 dates a year since the late 80’s.

Really? Wow

Most country artists in their prime today do like a 6 month tour. Maybe 20 weekends (Thurs-Sat shows) – avg about 50-70 shows a year

I’ll look deeper tonight, but his 1999 George Strait Country Music Festival Tour was only 14 dates.

https://guestpectacular.com/artists/george-strait/events/tour/1999-george-strait-country-music-festival?page=1

He made so much money from his record deals, he didn’t need to be out on the road like the artists today getting a fraction of a penny for each streaming song.

' data-tf-not-load src=

@Howard, @CCCB– I completely agree with you. Strait retired from his full-time touring and shut down that enterprise. I hardly think that any George Strait fan is going to be upset that Strait is doing some shows.

Robert Earl Keen–who obviously operated on a much smaller scale than Strait did a Farewell Tour and retired from the road last year. I went to one of the shows. He appeared to be having some health issues–he couldn’t stand for very long–but he soldiered through. I’m glad that he announced it as a farewell tour, because if he had not, I very likely would not have gone

If 5 years from now (or sooner) REK is feeling OK and comes out and does some shows, will I be upset? Of course not. The whole thing is silly. If I don’t like an artist, or think they’re chiseling people, I won’t go to see them at all. I couldn’t care less what they announce about their long-term plans.

I’ve never seen George Strait, but I just may go to see George and Chris at the Meadowlands. I’ve seen Hank Aaron and Reggie and Gibson and Seaver and Ali and Foreman and Sammartino, I’ve seen each of the Higwaymen–together and separately, and the Rolling Stones, I’ve seen Dolly and Reba and Pavarotti and Tony Bennett. I think George Strait is an icon who I should add to my list of performers who I’ve seen.

“I hardly think that any George Strait fan is going to be upset that Strait is doing some shows. “

There most definitely are Strait fans that are upset about this because they’ve been emailing me and posting about it online for years. Up until this point, I’ve basically decided not to give voice to them because they’ve been announced as one off shows. But announcing 9 in a row, and eight basically on successive weekends which most certainly constitutes a “tour” is what crossed the line for me.

Again, I’m trying to present both sides of the perspective here. Maybe it is a small minority of Strait fans who feel slighted. But it’s not “any.”

As far as I’m concerned the only reason to legitimately be upset with an artist for coming back would be if they diminish their own dignity in the process.

Like if Tom Brady were to come back for umpteen million dollars to be the new QB for the Jets, without even having gone to training camp!

' data-tf-not-load src=

My wife’s been real mad for two days. Spent a ton to fly from Texas to South Carolina for a show because she was under the mistaken impression he was done.

We won’t be buying tickets to this tour.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Real world problems.

' data-tf-not-load src=

One of those festival dates was Phoenix (Tempe) because we were there. It poured and poured all day and night…until George finally came on. It was the first time I saw Tim McGraw, and I was hooked.

This is s semantics argument. This is a stadium tour. I posted a comment below rounding up the scores of outlets that promoted or considered it a “tour.” Five or more shows is a “tour.” If you’re playing eight shows on (mostly) successive weeks, and have semi trucks and tour buses driving the equipment from town to town, that is a tour. No, George Strait has not ridden on a tour bus since the Reagan Administration. That doesn’t mean he’s not on tour.

Last year the most dates he announced together was five. Now he’s announced nine. This is what Audacity reported last year when he announced five:

“It just felt right,” Strait told Billboard of the decision to tour.

https://www.audacy.com/national/music/george-strait-to-tour-with-chris-stapleton-little-big-town

It’s a tour.

I remember his statement at the time of his retirement was something along the lines of he never wanted to get to the point where he was touring and no one showed up.

He’s had one finger on the pulse of his demand. A bunch of fans (a generation?) who were 12 and 15 at the time of his retirement are now 24 and 29 ($$$) and there’s a renewed demand for King George.

No harm, no foul.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Yep I remember ĥim saying that. No offense to the Hag or Jones but I don’t think he wanted to be playing county fairs and being an opener for other artists like they did in their later years unfortunately. Although it is great for the fans. George Jones was at our county fair in 1998 or 1999 and tickets stated at $15

Also, you know what you never see for sale? An old George Strait tour bus, because he hasn’t been on one since the early 90’s. He jets into cities on his private jet and gets police escorted to the venue and back to the airport and is back in San Antonio while most fans are still fighting traffic in the parking lot. You only support that kind of lifestyle by selling out select major venues (not county fairs while riding a tour bus).

' data-tf-not-load src=

I’m of the opinion that if it’s your guy (or girl), I mean one of your all time faves and can’t miss, go if you can swing it without winding up in the doghouse or out on the street. None of us are getting any younger. I learned my lesson the hard way with Petty. His last tour my son begged me to take him. Sorry pal, things are tight right now and Tom will be back next year as usual. We’ll catch him then…

' data-tf-not-load src=

Trigger, I think there’s a typo in the headline.

I think people are allowed to change their minds. It’s been almost ten years since his farewell tour wrapped up and it’s reasonable to think he’s had time to reconsider. Even then, this is eight shows over more than two months and another five months later so it doesn’t seem like a full tour.

Here is a list of various media outlets announcing the new tour dates with George Strait and Chris Stapleton as a “tour.”

Probably 50+ more where this came from, but you get the point.

People who complain about feeling slighted because they spent too much money on what they thought was a farewell tour are absolute whine bags.

This would be different if he has done tour after tour year after year since announcing the farewell, but that’s hardly the case

People need to find more important things to be pissed about

' data-tf-not-load src=

Well, what are your thought on Buckeye Superfest announcing a second show? Was that planned all along to drive prices sky high for the ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity, just to follow with another show the next night? I’m expecting prices could be just as high for the second show, but seems like it was calculated.

This is 3rd year in a row for the LBT, Stapleton, Strait lineup. Nothing against the openers, but would be nice to change things up a bit, but I get it, there is only a handful of shows of the years with that lineup.

DO NOT buy tickets near the aisles that provide access/egress for the floor. People arrive at these stadium shows at 4PM and by 9-10PM they have to leave due to been overly drunk, tired, and sick of $6 bottles of water and $24 chicken tenders.

It’s a tour. But I take a ‘see them while I can’ perspective in very artist I go out of my way to see. There are no guarantees in life that they will be back around.

Not really sure if Country Superfest had it planned all along, or they’re just increasing inventory to satisfy demand. They may have scheduled it thinking they could do a second day if necessary, but wait to see what the reception was. I think a lot of folks are going to come from out of town for that. I’m considering making the trek.

Cool, will see you there then. I did see that the CWG slot is showing as TBD for Sunday, so will be interesting to see what they fill it with. Wyatt Flores would be an interesting pick but maybe too early in the lineup for him… haha.

On a side note, I really do not understand why ZB didn’t just do 360 in the round. They darn well knew those end stage setups were going to sell out. Anyway, not sure if that would have softened ticket prices. Not by business so not going to pretend I know what I’m talking about.

I’m happy for this, he is coming to the meadowlands in NJ which I would like to attend. Otherwise he avoided the NY/NJ area for some reason so only saw him once at the Garden State Arts Center in Holmdel and the Prudential Center for the farewell tour , which we only paid $33 per ticket for the day before. But they were both so great and My wife and I were so happy to see him, I’ll do it again.

My son who is a big fan of his was too young to attend and worships the movie ‘Pure Country’ has traveled to Texas to the Kountry Klub in MIdlothian Texas to visit sets from that movie and would love to see him live. I’m all for this tour.

We don’t know the stress of being on the road and sometimes you just put your hands up and say I’m done, and then when the flames settle, you re-think your decision and recharge your lithium batteries and say, lets do it again!

Some of the best Who shows I’ve seen are after they so called ‘retired’ , and they were so great, who can complain? Roger singing Quadraphenia at his age is totally amazing, more power to the old men, I’m one of them.

Thanks Trig for the update!

' data-tf-not-load src=

Ehh – His farewell tour was what – 10 years ago? I don’t think people are going to feel bad for having paid a lot of cash to see him then. 10 years ago is almost an eternity these days.

' data-tf-not-load src=

People who are mad at a grown ass man deciding what he’s gonna do need to quit bitching. I went to Nashville back in July (luckily caught the first night), and Strait had a packed out Nissan stadium in the palm of his hand. If he wants to do a handful of those shows a year, either buy a ticket, enjoy your memories of seeing him, or quit whining.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I can’t wait to throw $400 at George!

' data-tf-not-load src=

I’ve always thought The Dead got a pass for that shameful run of shows in Chicago they called Fare Thee Well….as if it was the last stand of rock’s greatest touring act. I love the dead more than most, but they’ve been egregious offenders of the “this is the last time” bit.

' data-tf-not-load src=

As far as I know, there have been a few acts that have hung it up and stayed retired. Barbara Mandrell hung it up and never performed again. The Statler Brothers retired in 2002 and while the group retired, Jimmy Fortune continued on as a solo act and is now part of a group called Brothers of the Heart. If you are passionate about what you do, it is hard to hang it up regardless of whatever you do. You even have pro wrestlers who still throw down into their 70s and even 80s. These days, a farewell tour is more of a marketing gimmick than an actual commitment. So as long as King George can still don the hat and ride off into the sunset under the stage lights, and the fans are still there to see it all, then that’s all that truly matters.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I wish I could have seen him when I was younger. I looked at Nissan Stadium tickets last year and couldn’t afford it/didn’t want to travel and to be in the nosebleeds. I don’t begrudge him.

' data-tf-not-load src=

The King Of Cowboys rides again !!!! Hopefully not for the last time !!!!!!!

' data-tf-not-load src=

I never saw him in Louisville when I was growing up because I was too cheap/poor. I flew to Austin to see him at the Frank Erwin Center in 2018 and it was a great, bucket list experience. That’s all I need. I have zero interest in ever seeing any musician in a football stadium. I can find an old concert on youtube as opposed to sitting in the upper deck somewhere and paying over $100 to watch something on a jumbotron.

@aaron–I have to admit, you’re right. The idea of a 70-year-old who just stands in place and sings giving a concert in front of 40,000-plus available seats in a football stadium is a tad ridiculous. But if they can charge $160-to $700 ticket and fill the place up–that’s a live gate of over $10 million per concert!–they’re going to do it, and I don’t blame them

I think they’re going to have to come up with some real wild pyrotechnics to hold the crowd’s attention. I have a feeling that reviews will not be all that good and tickets for some of these venues may become available at substantial discounts come event day.

I saw Sinatra in concert in ’92, and it was still amazing just to be there with Ol’ Blue Eyes.

In ’92, Sinatra was doing concerts at Radio City Music Hall in New York (capacity about 6,000), the Desert Inn casino in Vegas and the Sands in Atlantic City, the Centrum in Worester, Mass., and a couple of arenas in Auburn Hills, Michigan and Richfield Ohio If you went to see him, you got a human sized show where he chatted with the audience between songs, bitched about certain people who he had beefs with, and you could look at him directly and see the expression on his face and hear his voice (with some amplification) of course. You certainly got the sense that you knew something more about him than you did before. I don’t think you’re going to get anything like that if you go to see George Strait at the Atlanta Falcons’ or New York Giants’ or Iowa State stadiums.

' data-tf-not-load src=

My only problem with this is the Little Big Town opener. Sure would be cool for them to do what Luke Combs does and give the slot to a Flatland or Brent Cobb, not some generic country radio group that I couldn’t name a song. Its not like Strait/Stapleton need an opener to draw any crowd at all.

I’ve always wondered what Little Big Town did or who they know to get that spot every year. It’s not like there is any sort of demand for Little Big Town. I agree, that’d be a good spot for exposure for someone up and coming, but it would be someone with a major labor deal and not an indy guy, Zach Top would be a good choice. Garth did that for Randall King.

' data-tf-not-load src=

George had to go back to work more so to keep one of 67,000 IRS agents out of his checkbook!

Lynyrd Skynyrd is going back on tour after Gary Rossington’s death, despite them having a “final” tour.

I admire anybody who has the balls to stage a “Lynyrd Skynyrd” tour, when nobody from “Freebird” or “Sweet Home, Alabama” is alive, but if they draw fans and turns a profit, what the hey?

Most Jacksonvillians don’t care. They just care about keeping the music alive.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Im just glad he’s doing a few shows, mini tour, whatever. And for the love of all things holy, I hope he plays Western PA at some point. I had prayed The Cowboy Rides Away would have a stop here, it didn’t. I’m sick over Alan canceling last year, in my mind it was appropriately postponed the day Loretta left, but then canceled in April (I hope AJ is okay). Hank Jr softened that blow in June, that was bucket list. Merle was the other, so that’s never gonna happen. Next would be Strait, last time he played here was in ’07. I was a broke 17 year old, but still flying high from seeing the GOAT (I hate that overused acronym, but here it applies) George (as in Jones) 4 months earlier. That one was worth it though

I got to see Merle twice. Johnny Paycheck opened for him at one of those shows. Got to see Possum at the fair one year. He still sounded great. I’ve seen Strait 6 times in 4 different cities. Looking forward to a #7 here in Jacksonville.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I had the opportunity to see George twice on his Cowboy Rides Away Tour. Would I like to see him one more time? Of course I would!

Random thought…I wish they’d realize the entire Greene Hall show. It was such a cool event that I think it deserves a proper release.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I bought tickets to see Cody Jinks at the Ryman for the first time. Some out quick so they added another show…..the night before…now my tickets were to his second show….I may never get out of therapy

' data-tf-not-load src=

Presale tickets for the Las Vegas show- club level for 2 seats-$2709. I just can’t……

' data-tf-not-load src=

I don’t know. If people are irritated that they spent a few hundred dollars to a grand a DECADE ago to see George Strait because now other people get to see him again, then I’m sorry but that sounds like a “them” problem. That money is gone and it isn’t coming back, so being upset about it seems a bit absurd to me.

Like what do they want? For George to not do any shows so they they can say that THEY got to see him but no one else should? More George Strait is better than the alternative.

Judging by some of these comments, that’s exactly what they want. It is laughable at best.

' data-tf-not-load src=

I got to watch George for a couple of years in the mid-70s in San Marcos before he got famous. We went because it was $1 pitcher night. I had hair down to my shoulders and was in a full-blown rebellion from my redneck roots. Got to keep seeing him until about 82 when he blew up. Never wanted to pony up for tickets to go sit in an arena after I had danced at his early shows. All time great song picker.

' data-tf-not-load src=

His last show on The Cowboy Rides Away Tour, at ATT Stadium in Arlington, Texas on June 7, 2014, before 104,793 fans, was the largest ticketed attendance ever at a single concert in the United States. The concert also set a record for the largest gross at a single-show country concert, $18,194,374, and broke the 33-year-old record as well for “largest indoor concert ever,” easily surpassing the 87,500 fans who attended the December 5, 1981, Rolling Stones concert at the New Orleans Superdome.

George Strait's bus driver recalls life on the road

by Kristen Drew

Lee Roy Eichler at the Tacoma Dome, April 12, 2014.

For more than three decades George Strait has graced the country music stage but in June the country legend is expected to retire from on the road. It marks a bittersweet end for some of Strait's crew members who have been with him since the beginning of the ride. "You just try to soak it all in and you didn't think it would go 32 years - for me - and it has," said Lee Roy Eichler who had a front seat view of it all as the 'King of Country's' personal bus driver. Eichler, a Central Texas native, performed at the same clubs as George Strait in the early 1980's but the two had never met until Eichler approached the country singer about a job. "I said, 'Man, I think you're going to be big. If you ever get a bus I'd like a shot at driving it. So, as it turned out a few weeks later he called me," recalled Eichler during an interview at the Cowboy Rides Away tour stop at the Tacoma Dome on April 12th. Eichler, who still calls Texas home, has now seen the world through a windshield. He's traveled so many miles he's lost count but knows it's more than a million. "It's just been great," said Eichler. "Every bus we got was a little bit better, a little bit better. Every situation, every year was a little bit better and now it's just crazy amazing." The Cowboy Rides Away tour travels with about ten buses carrying crew, equipment and instruments. Eichler is the daytime driver on the bus that Strait calls 'home' on the road. He describes the rides as quiet with all the comforts of home catering to the King of Country - a man Eichler says has a big heart and cares for his people.

"(He's) just a great guy. And I'm not just saying that," said Eichler. "He's a great man, has a great family." Eichler has watched George Strait rise to the top of country music with more than 69 million records sold and 60 number one hits - more than any other artist in history; even Elvis. Eichler said it's hard to narrow down any of the highlights or special memories throughout the ride. "Every one of them has been a highlight, really, because it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and it got bigger and bigger and you just take it in slowly and now it's going to crash on me," said Eichler. Even at 69-years-old it's still hard for Eichler to imagine retiring from the road. "Ugh. God, I don't even want to go there. It's an emotional deal for me. Certainly is," said Eichler who is coming to reality at each tour stop that things are slowing down. "It's tough. Like here in Tacoma - you know you'll never see Tacoma again and every venue is just like that," said Eichler. "You know you'll never walk back into this big, huge crowd again. Hear all that. It must be really crazy amazing for (George Strait) and emotional. I know it is." Ready or not, when the 'cowboy rides away' on June 7th at AT&T Stadium it will mark the end of a run that Eichler's been on since the beginning. "Just can't beat it. What more can you want? Working for the number one man," said Eichler who isn't sure what he's going to do when the tour ends but you might just see him out on the road with other country artists.

George Strait's First Tour Van Is Still on the Road!

george strait tour bus

Everybody's got to start somewhere, even (King) George Strait .

He's got access to private jets and the finest touring coaches nowadays, but back in the early '80s when he was just getting his start, he was tooling around the Southwest in this bare-bones Dodge van.

A writer for the Music of New Braunfels website spotted it outside of the famous Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos, Texas, on Monday night (Feb. 9).

With room for his gear and a cot, Strait must have spent hundreds of nights on the road in this thing.

It might not look like much, but I bet it felt like a straight-up limo back then.

Check out his collection of bumper stickers. Since the van's interior looks pretty beat up, I bet they're original.

What an awesome piece of country music history. I wonder if Strait even knows it's still around?

Eric Church Recalls Watching George Strait Dance His A** Off On The Bus: “The Coolest Damn Thing I’ve Ever Seen”

george strait tour bus

George Strait … a living legend.

Eric Church shared a hilariously awesome George Strait story with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe on his “At Home” podcast last year, and it’s one for the ages.

Back on George’s farewell tour in 2014, Eric was opening a show for him in Omaha, Nebraska.

Of course, Eric is a massive George Strait fan and even told Zane he would not only put him on the Mount Rushmore of country music greats, but he very well may be the greatest to ever do it in the genre:

“There’s an argument that you’re talking greatest artist of all time, in country, you’re talking about that.”

He goes on to talk about his time touring with The King, and that’s where it gets really good.

“We played Texas stadium. That was his last show. But, my favorite thing is we came up on his bus, the first show I played was an acoustic show I did in front of his show in Omaha, Nebraska, and we go up on his bus after the show. I took my wife.”

I mean, hanging out on George Strait’s tour bus? If that isn’t already the dream.

But wait, it gets even better.

“We’re up there and George is, you know, he’s The King. And he just played in the round for all these people.

He’s up there, and we’re talking about music and I mention James Brown. And he goes ‘I love James Brown!’ I said ‘oh, good.’ So George has got his boots off, he’s in gold toe black socks, like dress socks.

And I said ‘let’s play some James Brown, come on.’ So he puts on some James Brown. And next thing I know, George Strait is tearing down in the middle of the bus, my wife’s tearing down with him, they’re all dancin’.”

You have to love it.

I mean, what else would we expect from The King?

“I’m watching George Strait dance in gold toe socks to James Brown. It’s one of the coolest damn things I’ve ever seen in my life. I’ve never seen anything like that. It is cool as shit.

So I’m watching this guy do this, goin’ ‘it doesn’t get better than this. This is the best I’ve seen.’ So, he’s tearing it up, man. George Strait and James Brown. Beat that.”

Well, George, James and Katherine (Eric’s wife)… what I wouldn’t give to see that.

Hear Eric tell the story himself:

George Strait Covers Of Brooks & Dunn’s “Boot Scootin’ Boogie”

FRIDAY MOOD: GEORGE STRAIT SINGIN’ BROOKS AND DUNN https://t.co/mIxYSbL7Hv — Whiskey Riff (@WhiskeyRiff) March 25, 2022

Back in 2010, the Academy of Country Music brought some of country’s biggest stars together to honor one of the most iconic duos in country music history… the great Brooks & Dunn.

Brad Paisley, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean, Tim McGraw, even Taylor Swift… tons of artists were there to pay tribute to Kix and Ronnie.

But there was another artist there, even more legendary than Brooks & Dunn… the great George Strait.

Donning a bright white suit jacket, and even his glasses, George walked onto that stage like an angel walks through Heaven. Glowing, floating… with a certain holy reverence about him.

And after some kind words about Kix and Ronnie, King George went to work on an electric cover of the 1991 classic, “Boot Scootin’ Boogie.”

And he blew the damn roof off.

How about that baby-faced Luke Bryan in the crowd too? Time flies…

George Strait Nearly Breaks His Own RodeoHouston Attendance Record

Looks like King George brought the house down at RodeoHouston.

Of course, what’s the world’s biggest rodeo without George Strait himself?

The country legend drew a crowd of 79,452 fans, almost topping his 2019 appearance, where he set an NRG Stadium record of 80,108 fans.

For this year’s show, he played an astounding 29 songs over a course of two-plus hours, according to  Houston Culture Map .

Although he drew nearly an identical crowd at his 2019 show, which featured Texas country legends Robert Earn Keen and Lyle Lovett, he decided to bring in a young face to join him on stage this year as an opener, and it was Ashley McBryde.

She performed her hits like “Martha Devine,” “A Little Dive Bar in Dahlonega,” “Voodoo Doll,” “Whiskey + Country Music,” as well as a kickass rendition of the Allman Brothers’ “Midnight Rider.”

After a 20 minute intermission, it was time for Strait to hit the stage.

He strutted on stage reppin’ a red and white plaid dress shirt, a black cowboy hat, blue jeans, and brown cowboy boots.

He kicked things off with his  Pure Country  movie hit song, “Heartland,” and the crowd was on their feet, roaring.

Needless to say, it was quite the memorable night for the man.

In addition to his work as a musician, Stapleton and his wife, Morgane, are founders of the Outlaw State of Kind charitable fund, which supports a variety of causes that are close to their heart.

About Little Big Town GRAMMY, ACM, CMA, AMA and Emmy Award-winning group, Little Big Town – consisting of members Karen Fairchild, Phillip Sweet, Kimberly Schlapman and Jimi Westbrook – first entered the music scene over 20 years ago with hit songs “Boondocks,” “Bring It On Home,” “Good As Gone” and the GRAMMY-nominated “Little White Church.” The band’s breakthrough albums Tornado and Pain Killer produced multiple No. 1 singles, including “Pontoon,” “Tornado” and “Day Drinking,” as well as the history-making, best-selling country single of the year (2015) “Girl Crush.” 2017’s The Breaker debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country charts and Top 10 (No. 4) on the Billboard 200 to critical acclaim. The album features their GRAMMY-winning, multi-week No. 1 single, “Better Man,” as well as the 2019 GRAMMY-nominated, “When Someone Stops Loving You.” The band’s self-produced ninth studio album Nightfall was released January 2020 and hit the top of the Billboard Country charts. The record included critically-acclaimed and GRAMMY-nominated “The Daughters,” “Over Drinking” and “Wine, Beer, Whiskey” – the latter of which has reached more than 380 million global streams. In April 2022, they released their new single “Hell Yeah,” which has amassed more than 60 million global streams to date. Little Big Town has earned more than 45 award show nominations and has taken home nearly 20 awards, including multiple GRAMMY, AMA, People’s Choice, CMA and ACM Awards, in addition to an Emmy award. Their highly anticipated 10th studio album Mr. Sun was released on September 16, 2022.

Bus Tour Itinerary:

Want to feel like a real Muscovite and experience the atmosphere or this extraordinary city in just a few hours? Then explore ithe main artery of Moscow - the Garden Ring.

After you visited the ancient Kremlin, explored the area of Kitay Gorod and enjoyed the sights of White city, it's time to move on and take a ride along the 17th century border of Moscow - the Garden Ring.

After we explore the Stalin skyscraper -  building of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we will turn to Old Arbat pedestrian zone. You will see lovely houses of 19 centuries and feel the atmosphere of old Moscow, as the Arbat preserved it almost untouched.

In 90-s Arbat was chosen by the members of numerous subcultures as the place for hangout. Nowadays Arbat is Bohemian place and one of Moscow's symbols. But long time ago it was just a suburb.

Soon we’ll find ourselves on New Arbat, that was founded in 60-s, and was conceived as a government road. This New Arbat dramatically differs from the Old Arbat.

Patriarch Ponds

One more beloved place among the Muscovites with a very rich history. A lots of famous and outstanding personalities lived in this area: poets, scientists, militaries and even criminals. In 17 century Patriarch Hermogenus founded a Patriarch's village here, hence the name. Moreover, this place is famous all over the world thanks to the genius Russian writer M. Bulgakov. He chose Patriarch's ponds as the scene of his novel "The Master and Margarita".

Hermitage Garden

The next coziest and memorable place for all of Muscovites is Hermitage Garden. Before the Revolution it was a Bohemian place, frequently attended by the great actors and writers, art workers, and patrons. Here for the first time in Moscow a movie of Lumiere's brothers was shown. Today tradition continues and there are two theaters inside the park, lots of memorials and fun.

Museon Park & Gorky Park

Today Muscovites can't imagine their leisure activities without visiting Museon Statues Park and Gorky Park. These are fun areas. Take a look at Soviet monuments of Communist rulers, take a walk along the embankment, note what's wrong with the Peter's the Great monument, enjoy big musical fountain in Gorky park and observe how Russians spend their free time.

Crimean bridge

The last part of our Moscow bus tour you'll spend walking over the Crimean bridge. Long time ago on that place was a ford, which the Crimean Tatars used in order to attack Muscovy, that's why it was called Crimean. This hanging bridge is the one of a kind in Moscow. Moreover, it serves as a fabulous observation point, it is really a mysterious place.

On the tour you will find out:

  • why Stalin was mad when he saw the building of Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
  • how Muscovites truly call New Arbat;
  • the real reason why Bulgakov chose Patriarch's ponds as the scene where Devil arrived for the first time;
  • who suggested to build Moscow rings;
  • where are hidden all the gardens on the Garden Ring;
  • why Crimean bridge is very dangerous.

On the tour you will see:

  • Historical buildings of 19 century;
  • Stalin's Empire;
  • 4 out of 7 Stalin Skyscrapers;
  • Old and New Arbat;
  • Most popular Moscow Parks;
  • First electric street lamp in Moscow;
  • Main squares of the city;
  • Fascinating non touristy places;
  • Muscovites daily life and transportation.

Fun Facts from our Bus Tours:

What is the garden ring in moscow.

Actually, we call the Garden Ring  a series of streets, separated by the squares.

A great number of fascinating and historical places a re situated on the Garden Ring.  Traveling along that street, you can briefly learn about all main areas of Moscow, learn its history and meaning. It will help you to navigate Moscow better and surely you can feel more like a local on this tour.

Every square on the Garden Ring has its own historical background. For example, Sukharevskaya square in 19 century hosted a market. It was very popular among Muscovites, but usually stolen things were sold there. Often people had to buy there their own stuff again after it was stolen. The Smolenskaya, Crimean, Serpukhovskaya, Taganskaya squares were market places too.

Triumphalnaya square bears its name in memory of triumphal arch that stood here to commemorate the victory over Sweden, built by the order of Peter the Great, as well as Red Gate square placed another triumphal arch. In the beginning of 20 century Triumphal square was a cultural place. Several theaters were situated there, Meyerhold’s theater among them, a circus and a park.

Three squares of the Garden Ring became real battlefields during the revolution between the bolsheviks and tsar's supporters in 1917. And finally capitulation of royal regime was signed in the building, situated on the Garden Ring.

"And the Garden ring became a wedding ring to us…"

These are words from the official soundtrack to the very popular soviet movie "Moscow does not believe in tears" that has won an American Academy Award for the best foreign language film in 1980. Not coincidentally Garden Ring is mentioned in this song as a symbol of Moscow. As it is very important part of our city, it reflects all historical events beginning from the end of 16th century.

A Garden Ring? No. An earthern rampart!

The territory outside White city's wall was called Earthern city . The Earthern city was an area were traditionally poor citizens used to settle: peasants and craftsmen. In comparison with the White city this area has always been dirty and less prestigious. For example, in White city streets were paved in stone and buildings stood on the stone basements while Earthern city had only wooden houses.

This area was proclaimed as a part of Moscow only in 1593. And great fortification wooden wall, that surrounded the territory of Earthern city, was erected by the order of tsar Fyodor Ioannovich only in a year and was called "Skorodom" - fast-built house. Outside Skorodom was additionally fortificated with the moat and the rampart.

In Times of Troubles Skorodom was burnt down by Poles and restored by the Great Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich the Silent. Finally it had 57 towers and 11 entry gates.  Nowadays on that spots, where gates once stood, you can spot the main squares of Moscow.

Skorodom was destroyed and restored a lot's of times: during the Times of Troubles, Napoleon's invasion, in frequent Moscow fires. And finally in 1830 Skorodom was demolished as it lost its functions.

Miraculous transfiguration on Stalin’s orders

In 1917 the Great October revolution blew up everything that seemed to be right at that time. And in 1930-s Moscow was reconstructed… again. This time communists were making Moscow a model of communistic city. Surely that large-scale reconstruction touched the Garden Ring. The road was widened up to 60-70 meters, paved and became a ring with the help of new bridges: Crimean and Krasnokholmskiy. Since that time the Garden Ring is considered the main artery of Moscow.
