Glass Bottom Boat Tours See the Great Barrier Reef without getting wet!

Map of the Great Barrier Reef

Glass bottom boat tours allow passengers to admire the underwater beauty of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef without touching a drop of water. Although some glass bottom boats have sections of real glass beneath the waterline, other boats use another form of transparent material instead.

Glass Bottom Boat Tours

Most glass bottom boats are designed to accommodate as many passengers as possible while still allowing all passengers to look down and enjoy clear views of the tropical sea creatures and coral of the Great Barrier Reef .

Popular Glass Bottom Boat Tours

Some glass bottom boats also come with tour guides who provide detailed descriptions of the different types of coral and marine life in the Great Barrier Reef.

The jetty at Green Island is a popular departure point for glass bottom boats because its access ramp is so easy to use. Green Island’s glass-bottom boat prototype dates from the 1930s and is commonly used by many more boat companies today.

Cairns , the largest city in northeastern Australia, plays host to the largest number of companies offering glass bottom boat tours. However, these tours are also available from one company in Mission Beach and three more companies in Port Douglas .

Some glass bottom boat tours also include scuba diving or snorkelling excursions for those wishing to get even closer to the Great Barrier Reef’s coral and marine creatures. Night glass bottom boat tours are another popular option thanks to special ultraviolet lights that allow visitors to see the coral polyps awaken after dark.

Benefits of Taking a Glass Bottom Boat Tour

Taking a glass bottom boat tour is an amazing way to explore the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef without risking your safety or the environment. It’s also an ideal option for people who are unable or unwilling to go scuba diving or snorkelling. Those with mobility issues will find glass bottom boats provide easy access and allow them to experience the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, the underwater world and marine life, stunning tropical fish, and diverse coral reef in a safe and comfortable way.

A glass bottom boat tour is also more affordable than many other forms of reef exploration, making them an ideal option for people on a budget. And because glass bottom boats don’t disturb the delicate ecosystem of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, you can be sure you’re helping to protect one of the world’s most amazing natural wonders, and the soft coral reef.

Finally, a glass bottom boat tour provides spectacular views of the reef that can be enjoyed from a comfortable seat on the boat. Whether you want to spot sea turtles, stingrays or beautiful coral formations, there’s no better way.

Great Barrier Reef Departure Points

The most popular departure point for glass bottom boats is Green Island. This small island, located near Cairns in Queensland, is the traditional starting point for a variety of reef exploration activities, including scuba diving and snorkelling.

Cairns is another popular destination for glass bottom boat tours. There are a number of companies offering tours from Cairns, some of which also offer special excursions to the outer Great Barrier Reef.

Mission Beach is home to one company offering glass bottom boat cruises, Airlie Beach also offer a great trip on a glass bottom boat, as well as Port Douglas’ three companies make it a popular destination for reef exploration as well.

Additional Activities Available on Tour

In addition to seeing the reef up close, some glass bottom boat trips also offer additional activities such as scuba diving and snorkelling. These activities allow passengers to get even closer to the marine life while still enjoying the safety of a glass-bottomed boat.

Glass Bottom Boat Alternatives

For those looking for an alternative to the glass bottom boat tour, snorkelling trips are available in many areas along the Great Barrier Reef. These trips allow passengers to explore the soft corals in shallow waters and often come with experienced guides who can provide interesting facts about the diverse marine life.

Semi submersible cruises are also available in some areas, allowing passengers to stay dry while viewing the reef below. These tours are ideal for those who want to experience the underwater world without having to get in the water.

Nighttime Tours

Night tours are another popular option on many glass bottom boats. With the help of special ultraviolet lights, passengers can experience the Great Barrier Reef’s marine life coming to life after dark. On some tours, passengers also have the option of swimming with bioluminescent creatures such as jellyfish and sea stars.

Tips for booking the best Glass Bottom Boat Tour

When booking a glass bottom boat tour, it’s important to consider the type of experience you would like. Choose a company that offers tours specifically tailored to your needs and preferences. Make sure they offer safety briefings and provide all necessary equipment for passengers before embarking on their journey.

view from glass bottom boat

No matter which type of tour you choose, it’s important to consider your safety when going on a glass bottom boat ride. All companies offering these tours must adhere to strict safety and environmental guidelines. Be sure to check with the company you’re considering booking with to ensure your tour meets all safety requirements.

Once you have booked your glass bottom cruise, make sure to arrive early so you have time to register and get settled. It’s also important to dress appropriately – beachwear is generally appropriate.

Finally, keep your camera handy! You never know when you will spot amazing sea turtles or manta rays, or a spectacular view of nature at the bottom of the reef. With glass bottom boats, you will be sure to create lasting memories of your time exploring Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

No matter where you choose to depart from, a glass bottom boat tour is the perfect way to explore Australia’s pristine Great Barrier Reef without getting wet. Under the tutelage of patient and experienced guides and with the use of high quality snorkelling equipment, even the most nervous beginner soon takes to the water like a fish. Many of the reef boats that head to the outer Great Barrier Reef from Cairns and Port Douglas include a glass bottom boat experience, however we have chosen only to list the Green Island and Fitzroy island tours below as they are most suitable for those travellers just wanting a glass bottom boat experience without having to travel all the way out to the outer reef. If you are really short on time or get sea sick easily then select Green Island half day option as its just a short 45 minute ride across from the Cairns marina on Reef Rocket.

How long is a glass bottom boat ride tour in Cairns? The glass bottom boat tours last 30 minutes in total. Many reef boat companies offer glass bottom boat tours as part of their full day reef packages. However, if you are looking to maximise your time and don’t want to go all the way out to the outer Great Barrier Reef then the best glass bottom boat rides in Cairns are on Green Island and Fitzroy island. Big Cat offers half day Green Island tours, if you’re short on time or have morning/evening plans.

Are children able to go on the glass bottom boat tours to the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns? Absolutely glass bottom boats are a perfect pick for little ones and there is also some commentary so they can learn about the different marine life on board. Green Island offer a half day tour, which is a great option for younger children if you don’t want to commit to a full day. Do glass bottom boats have wheelchair or pram access if going from Cairns? Sadly the glass bottom boats aren’t wheelchair or pram friendly and you do need to have some mobility as you have to step from one boat to the other to board the glass bottom boat. Our operators are certainly able to provide some assistance though, they just can’t physically lift anyone. With regards to prams on the island, Green Island is pram friendly and there are boardwalks and pathways throughout the island that are suitable too. What’s the difference between a glass bottom boat tour and a semi submarine tour from Cairns? With the Semi- Submarine tour you are submerged underwater for about 30 mins so you can see marine life swimming right past your window as opposed to under your feet on a glass bottom boat tour. This option is more similar to a diver’s perspective of the reef. Where do glass bottom boat tours depart from in Cairns? Most of the glass bottom boat tours depart from either the Reef Fleet terminal or Cairns Marlin Marina and some offer transfer options for an additional charge from you hotel. Do you offer glass bottom boat tours from Cairns to the outer Great Barrier Reef? Yes, there are glass bottom boat tours in outer reef locations, if you would like a full day tour.  Reef Magic offers a great glass bottom boat and semi sub option in the Great Barrier Reef and is particularly good for families, providing the security of an activity platform.

Enjoy the view without diving in

Seen from under the water, the Great Barrier Reef is dazzling. Apart from the corals that come in all colours and shapes – purples and pinks, blues and yellows, spiky staghorns and delicate fan corals, brain corals and table corals – there is an endless array of marine life to marvel at, from tiny damselfish to imposing Maori wrasse, darting rays to curious turtles.

The good news is, you don’t need to dive in to enjoy the view. If you would rather stay dry, glass-bottom boat tours are a great way to open a window onto this enchanting world. Perfect for the less mobile or families with young children, these tours give crystal-clear views of what is happening beneath the surface, often with an expert commentator on hand.

Or consider a semi-submersible … sitting about a metre underwater and surrounded by glass, you’ll get a fish-eye view of the reef wonderland from these air-conditioned vessels. Divers and snorkellers don’t need to miss out on these boating adventures either: there are plenty of tours that incorporate both glass-bottom boats and semi-submersibles along with underwater exploration.

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

Glass Bottom Boat Tours

Explore the reef up close, watch vibrant marine life in their natural habitat and view colourful coral – all without getting wet.

What is a Glass Bottom Boat tour?

Stay dry while you explore the Great Barrier Reef on a fun, safe tour for non-swimmers of all ages. Guests board a boat fitted with either a thick, clear floor or transparent walls that sit below the waterline. Each guided tour takes 15-30 people and cruises leisurely over the reef for 20-30 minutes.

5 Best Glass Bottom Boat Tours on the Great Barrier Reef

These are our staff picks with each tour offering Glass Bottom Boat Tours:

1 Day Reef Magic Moore Reef Tour from Cairns

1 day cruise whitsundays hardy reef tour from the whitsundays, 1 day lady elliot island tour from bundaberg, half & 1 day great adventures green island tours from cairns, 1 day quicksilver agincourt reef tour from port douglas, what are the benefits of a glass bottom boat tour.

This is a fun, safe activity the whole family can enjoy. It doesn’t matter if you can’t swim or snorkel, or even if you’re a little scared of fish, you can still enjoy breathtaking views of the Great Barrier Reef from the comfort of a Glass Bottom Boat. Learn more about this natural wonder from the expert guides on board who are more than happy to point out interesting sites, teach you about the history of the reef and share fun facts about the abundance of marine life you’ll see through the glass panels.

What types of things will I see on a Glass Bottom Boat tour?

From sharks to shipwrecks to schools of tropical fish – whatever lies beneath the surface, you can see from the comfort of your cosy, dry Glass Bottom Boat. The Great Barrier Reef is 2300km long so what you see through the glass panels will depend on:

  • Which part of the reef you’re visiting
  • What time of year you’re visiting
  • Whether the tide is high or low.

No two tours are ever the same! When the tide is low, coral appears brighter as the sunlight can better penetrate the water and bring the vibrancy of the reef to life.

Glass Bottom Boat tours glide leisurely through the water so there is plenty of time to marvel at the underwater wonders. Be sure to pay attention to the tour guides – some of whom are marine biologists – as they are a wealth of information about the reef. They can share fascinating insights about the coral, fish, turtles, clams and stingrays you’ll see as you glide past.

TIP: If you’re visiting a pontoon with an underwater viewing observatory, it’s worth visiting early in the day before swimmers and divers start splashing about. If it’s a clear day and visibility is good, you’ll get a taste of what’s below deck.

What are the differences between Glass Bottom Boats, Semi-Submersibles, Underwater Observatories, and Transparent Kayaking?

There are many wonderful ways to peek below the waves without getting wet.

  • A Glass Bottom Boat has a flat base with a clear panel in the middle and seats positioned around its perimeter. You can look down and see the reef below as the boat gently glides on the surface of the water. Glass Bottom Boats have open decks making them suitable for anyone who feels uncomfortable in enclosed spaces.
  • A Semi-Submersible craft looks and feels like a mini submarine. Step down into an enclosed glass hull and take a seat on the long bench that runs down the centre. Large, glass panels line the hull like windows allowing you to look across the reef and below. Many semi-submersibles are air-conditioned, so it feels a little like a moving aquarium. It’s worth noting there are usually stairs in these vessels and some can be a little steep.
  • Underwater Windows and Observatories are attached to offshore pontoons anchored above the reef. They are like a semi-submersible in that you walk downstairs to a submerged chamber with large windows looking out across the reef. However, observatories don’t move so you can sit and watch marine life at your leisure. At night, external lights are turned on to spotlight the reef’s nocturnal inhabitants and illuminate surrounding coral.
  • Transparent Kayaking is a leisurely way for one or two people to explore above and below the surface. Clear Perspex panels line sections of the kayak’s hull, usually around the footwell, so you can view the reef and its inhabitants as you glide through the tropical waters above.

Where can I take a Glass Bottom Boat tour?

Glass Bottom Boat tours are usually offered on half-day and full-day tours to the reef and occasionally from the mainland. The boats, kayaks and semi-submersibles are moored on large pontoons anchored at the edge of a reef or on islands dotting the Great Barrier Reef. Tour operators schedule several Glass Bottom Boat tours daily so check with a crew member when you arrive on the pontoon or island for departure times.

When is the best time to go on a Glass Bottom Boat tour?

The Great Barrier Reef is a joy to visit at any time of the year, so Glass Bottom Boat tours depart year-round. Peak tourism season is usually from September to March – the Southern Hemisphere’s spring and summer months. It’s a little quieter after Easter so April and May are great if you want to avoid large crowds.

In winter, an injection of fresh water flushes out the reef and makes visibility crisper and clearer. These cooler months are the perfect time to take a Glass Bottom Boat tour as it will be easier to spot all manner of marine life and sea creatures under the surface.

TIP: If you’re eager to see turtles, check out the tours that leave from Bundaberg .

I have booked a half-day trip; will I have time to take a Glass Bottom Boat tour?

Absolutely! Glass Bottom Boat tours vary in length from 10 minutes to 30 minutes with operators scheduling several a day to cater to day-trippers. Some of the larger pontoons even operate multiple Glass Bottom Boats and semi-submersibles at the same time. If you’d like to take a Glass Bottom Boat tour, make sure you check the frequency of their departures, where they leave from and what time the last tour will be to ensure you don’t miss out.

Follow these guides to make sure you get the most out of your reef visit:

  • Half-day (up to three hours): You will have time for at least one Glass Bottom Boat tour.
  • Three-quarter day (up to four hours) – You will have time for one Glass Bottom Boat tour plus one other activity.
  • Full Day – You will have time for several Glass Bottom Boat tours plus other activities. If you are still on the pontoon in the evening, the underwater observatory will switch on its floodlights and you can witness the wonder of the reef at night.

Top 5 Tips for Glass Bottom Boat Tours

  • Listen and Learn – Each Glass Bottom Boat tour is hosted by an experienced guide with a wealth of knowledge about the Great Barrier Reef. Get the most out of your tour by sitting close to the guide so you can ask questions and discover their tips on where to look. That way, you won’t miss a thing!
  • Bathroom before boarding – Glass Bottom Boats rarely have bathrooms so make any toilet trips – especially for those travelling with young children – before you board the boat.
  • Avoid the crowds – The reef is popular year-round but tours during the winter months and outside of peak holiday seasons are usually quieter. Winter also brings with it clearer waters, better visibility and slightly cooler temperatures.
  • Say cheese – Don’t forget your camera if you want the memories of what you saw lingering long after your holiday has ended. Make sure you turn the flash off before you board the Glass Bottom Boat otherwise it will reflect off the clear panels and ruin your photos. TIP: Use a polarised lens or position your polarised sunglasses in front of your camera to capture the perfect shot without reflections.
  • Do your research – Take some time to get to know the kinds of animals you will encounter on the reef before you embark on a tour. That way, when you’re out on the water, you’ll have a better idea of what to look out for. TIP: Most Glass Bottom Boats, semi-submersibles and underwater observatories have posters, signs and plaques showing some of the area’s more common marine inhabitants.

Will I get motion sickness?

It is unlikely. Glass Bottom Boat tours operate in calm, shallow water and travel very slowly so you don’t miss a thing. But if you are prone to seasickness or worry there’s a chance you may fall ill, it’s best to be prepared and bring anti-nausea medication.

Can I travel by Glass Bottom Boat to the reef?

No. Glass Bottom Boats travel very slowly so would take far too long to reach the reef. There’s also not much to see though the viewing panels as you navigate the deeper waters between the mainland and the reef. A ferry, catamaran or sailboat is a much more efficient and faster way to reach the reef, whether your destination is a pontoon or an island.

How big are Glass Bottom Boats?

Boats differ in size depending on the destination and operator. Typically, a Glass Bottom Boat can accommodate between 15-30 people at a time.

How long is a Glass Bottom Boat tour?

Again, the duration varies depending on the destination, operator and the demand for tours. They usually take 20-30 minutes.

Can I go on the Glass Bottom Boat tour multiple times?

If your Glass Bottom Boat tour leaves from a pontoon, you will have the opportunity to do the tour more than once as it is covered in the cost of your ticket. Keep in mind though, this is subject to demand and availability. Tour operators want everyone to have an enjoyable day on the reef so will often give priority boarding to guests who have not already taken a tour.

How much does it cost?

Some tour companies and operators cover the cost of Glass Bottom Boat tours in their travel packages, others offer it as an optional activity at an additional cost. The best thing to do is speak to a travel expert or tour operator about what activities you’d like to try on the reef then explore different tour options together.

Is there any shelter from the sun?

Glass Bottom Boats have an open deck, but most are fitted with a canopy. However, the Queensland sun can be hot, even in winter, so it’s best to apply sunscreen before you go out on the water and wear a hat and appropriate clothing to protect your skin.

Can I take a young children and infants, will they still see things?

Yes! Glass Bottom Boat tours are a safe, fun and enjoyable way for young children to see the reef. They will enjoy unobstructed views from their seats making it the perfect activity for all ages.

Are Glass Bottom Boats wheelchair-accessible?

Unfortunately, no. To board a Glass Bottom Boat, passengers must be able to negotiate two moving platforms – a walkway or gangplank and the boat itself – and climb a few stairs to the viewing platform. No chairs are permitted on the boat other than its fixed seating.

How deep can I see?

What you see depends on water visibility and the weather but in perfect conditions, you may be able to see as far down as 10m. Shallow water offers the best view of coral as sunlight can easily penetrate the surface and light up the reef.

How much of the boat is glass and can I stand or walk on it?

Only the floor of the boat is made of glass and usually only a large panel in the centre. In semi-submersible boats, the walls and not the floor are made from glass. You cannot stand or walk on the glass.

Can we snorkel from the glass bottom tour?

Typically, you can only snorkel from the pontoon or the island, but this does vary between tours. Speak to a travel expert to see what packages are available.

Will I see different things on different Glass Bottom Boat tours?

Yes! The Great Barrier Reef is 2300km long and home to thousands of species of sea creatures and coral. The water temperature varies along the reef, enticing different varieties of marine life. The northern stretch of the reef is home to an abundance of tropical fish and vibrant corals while the southern end is home to colonies of turtles and manta rays.

Glass Bottom Boat Tour on the Great Barrier Reef

Visitors come far and wide to see the great barrier reef, one of the seven wonders of the world..

Glass Bottom Boat Tour

With miles and miles of crystal clear water and millions of reef structures to explore, the Great Barrier Reef has been a must-see destination for years. There are plenty ways to explore the reef, and booking a tour on a glass bottom boat is a great option.

What is a Glass Bottom Boat?

You can properly guess from the name, but this experience is held on a glass-bottom boat. Literately meaning it is a boat with a completely glass made floor. Creating a window into the underwater world located below. The boat is small in size, usually able to fit a small group, with guests sitting in a circle while gazing down below to the deep blue sea.

The History of the Glass Bottom Boat

The glass bottom boat has been around since the 1930s, taking visitors out to Green Island in the Great Barrier Reef to view the sea life below. The very first glass-bottom boat was built by Hallam Jones from a rowboat for personal use, however, the first commercial ones were used in California. Nowadays, there are a variety of tour groups that take thousands of tourists out each year to experience the reef from above. With glass bottom boats being growing substantially in popularity.

Why Glass Bottom Boat Tours are Great

Glass bottom boat tours are a fantastic way to see what’s going on underwater without having to immerse yourself in the water. The see-through bottom of the boat allows you to view the seafloor and the living creatures in their natural habitat. These tours are perfect for people who enjoy being on the water, rather than in. Faultless for families with young kids or senior citizens who may find snorkelling too hard. Tour guides provide entertaining and interesting information about that area, the sea creatures and marine life, and the history of the reef. It’s not uncommon to see turtles, schools of fish, and sometimes dolphins.

Day or Night

There are options to take a night tour, where the bottom of the boat is light with ultraviolet lights so guests can see the coral polyps alive after dark. This has become one of the most popular tours in the Great Barrier Reef, as the boat trip gives you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see living sea creatures in a different light.

Other Activities Offer

If you’re excited to jump in the water, some tour groups and boats are equipped with snorkel and scuba gear. With a full day out on the reef, with the glass bottom boat being just one out of a dozen activities on offer.

Snorkelling

Scuba diving, where you can join a glass bottom boat.

Majority of the glass bottom boat tours are located in Cairns, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Simply head to the Marina Marlin and hop on one of the many boats taking you out to the deep blue. But if you’re not stationed in Cairns, there are a few companies in Port Douglas and Mission Beach that operate glass-bottom boat tours all year round. Majority of the tours offering Glass bottom aren’t simply the glass bottom boat without any other inclusions. So, it’s best to choose a full day that offers snorkelling, scuba diving, glass-bottom boat, and more!

If you plan to visit one of Australia’s greatest beauties, plan to book a glass-bottom boat tour to venture out and see the reef’s residents in action without having to get wet!

Travel Tips

Glass Bottom Boat Tours In The Great Barrier Reef

According to most people from all around the world the Great Barrier Reef stands out as a wonderful natural wonder. One thing that many do not actually know is that this location is actually larger than the Great Wall of China. We are referring to a marine park that basically covers 3000 kilometers, one that is parallel to the coast of Queensland.

Glass Bottom Boat Tours In The Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is well-known for its scuba diving advantages, offering an experience that is among the most popular from all around the world. However, not everyone can swim or does enjoy scuba diving. There are over four hundred coral kinds available and 1500 tropical fish species, together with many other options that are currently available. You can actually see a lot of what is available underwater through a glass bottom boat tour.

Why A Glass Bottom Boat Tour?

You will want to experience this boat tour option at least once in life and the Great Barrier Reef is a great place to start. Travelers can so easily enjoy the beauty of this reef without even touching the water. There are glass bottom boats that do include glass under waterlines but most of them will feature transparent material that is more resistant. Because of this, the use of the term “glass” is not actually appropriate. Everything is much safer than glass.

In most cases a glass bottom boat will accommodate many different passengers but there are some limitations you should be aware of. Based on the tour you are on, there will be limitations to the number of people accommodated so be sure that you always book ahead when organizing such a vacation.

You can enjoy glass bottom boat tours that have tour guides and that will give you much more information than what you would imagine. The marine life present together with the corals makes for great photographic opportunities so do take your camera with you.

Finding A Great Glass Bottom Tour

The most common departure point for a glass bottom boat tour is the Green Island jetty. It has really easy access ramps and there is actually a glass bottom prototype that dates from the thirties. Now there are various boat companies that are available and that service tourists from all around the world.

Passengers will be able to admire the Australian Great Barrier Reef and they can do so from Cairns, a quite large Australia northeastern city that includes the largest companies that offer such a boat tour at the moment. You can also find some that depart from Port Douglas or from Mission Beach.

Remember that with some of the glass bottom boat tours of the Great Barrier Reef you can also enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving but that is only the case in the event that the tours include it. Do not assume that this is the case. Also, you will want to consider the night glass bottom boat tours. They are popular and give you a different view of the reef.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately if there is one thing we cannot control it is the weather. We are pleased you enjoyed your tour regardless and hopefully we can see you again in Cairns and on the Great Barrier Reef with the perfect conditions we are used to.
