Essential guide to Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole cruise terminals in Roatán (Honduras): where cruise ships dock, all services, and amenities at the cruise terminals.

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: May 30, 2023

Most cruisers do not realize that there are two distinct ports and terminals in Roatán. Frequent cruisers that have called at Roatán with the same cruise line may believe that the port where a specific cruise line docks is the only one in Roatán.

Where Ships Dock in Roatán

However, different cruise liens dock in two distinct ports. Carnival Corporation cruise ships dock at Mahogany Bay whilst ships from all other cruise lines dock at Port of Roatán Town Center (aka Coxen Hole).

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

The largest of the two ports in Roatán is the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center , located on the southwest coast of the island and owned by Carnival corporation. Obviously, this is the docking port (and Terminal) for Carnival ships but also for Princess, Holland & America, and all other cruise lines belonging to this corporation.

The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center has two berths where two mega ships can dock. The piers and terminal can get busy and crowded at times with over 8,000 passengers and crew.

The Mahogany Bay Terminal

The two piers of Mahogany Bay share the same exit before entering a wide walkway that leads to a vast 20 acre welcome center/terminal. Once passed a couple of stores on both sides of the walkway, you will be on large square opening into the left.

Here you will find every single service and amenity the cruise traveler many need: Restrooms, ATM, Phones, the inevitable duty-free shops with the ubiquitous brands found in the Caribbean, Grills, Bars, Restaurants and a craft market. At the end of this elongated square, you will also find an information booth, car rentals, the shore excursions hub and a taxi stand.

To the right side of the exiting walkway, it is impossible to miss the Magical Flying Beach Chair. This chairlift service transports guests from the main plaza directly to white sand of Mahogany Beach - the all day pass costs $14 USD. If you prefer, there is a shaded path to Mahogany Beach which is around 15 minutes walk away.

Mahogany Beach

The top attraction of Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is the beach. In fact, this is more like a private island run by Carnival Corporation and, in a way, is just an extension of your cruise ship. This 10-acre area with its over 800-foot-long beach is dotted with water-sports, beach activities, beach bars and grills.

What's at the Coxen Hole Cruise Terminal

This port and Terminal is much smaller than Mahogany Bay, only has one pier perpendicular to the coast and the exit gates open directly into a nice but smaller plaza. But the terminal also has all basics services like Restrooms, Car Rental, Pharmacy, ATM, Internet, an Information Booth, and Taxi Stand.

This terminal only has a few duty-free stores and gift shops. The shore excursion bus hub is on the right side of the terminal. On the left side, you will find the the taxi dispatch and the exist to the main street leading to Coxen Hole. Although within walking distance, there isn't much to see in this small town.

Booking Excursions through Cruise Line vs. Private Company

When visiting Roatan on a cruise, one of the important decisions you’ll need to make is how to plan your onshore excursions.

You have two primary options: booking excursions through the cruise line or opting for a private tour company. Each approach has its pros and cons, and the choice ultimately depends on your preferences and priorities.

Booking through the Cruise Line

  • Convenience : Cruise lines offer a seamless booking process. You can reserve excursions online or onboard the ship, making it hassle-free.
  • Reliability : Cruise line excursions are vetted and coordinated by the cruise company. You can trust that they will be well-organized and adhere to your ship’s schedule.
  • Safety : Cruise lines prioritize passenger safety and have established protocols for excursions. They typically work with reputable tour operators.
  • Guaranteed Return : If your cruise line excursion runs late and causes the ship to depart without you, the cruise line is responsible for getting you to the next port.
  • Variety : Cruise lines offer a range of excursions to suit different interests and activity levels.
  • Cost : Cruise line excursions can be more expensive than booking independently, as the cruise line adds a markup for convenience and coordination.
  • Crowds : Cruise line excursions may have larger groups, potentially reducing the personalized experience.
  • Limited Flexibility : Itineraries and schedules are fixed, leaving limited room for customization.

Roatan Cruise Port

Booking through a Private Tour Company

  • Cost Savings : Private tour companies often offer excursions at lower prices, allowing you to get more value for your money.
  • Personalized Experience : Smaller group sizes mean you can enjoy a more personalized and intimate experience.
  • Flexibility : Private tours can often be customized to your preferences, allowing you to explore Roatan at your own pace.
  • Local Knowledge : Local tour guides can provide insights into the island’s culture, history, and hidden gems.
  • Diverse Options : You can choose from a wide range of specialized tours that may not be available through the cruise line.
  • Coordination : You’ll need to coordinate transportation to and from the cruise port, which can be less convenient than cruise line excursions.
  • Safety : While many private tour companies are reputable, there is a degree of responsibility on your part to research and choose a reliable operator.
  • Time Management : Private tours may not adhere to your ship’s schedule as rigorously as cruise line excursions, so you need to be mindful of the departure time.
  • Risk : In the unlikely event of tour delays, the cruise ship may not wait for passengers on private excursions.

Tips for Choosing

To make an informed choice, consider the following tips when looking at Roatan cruise port:

  • Research : Read reviews, check ratings, and gather information about private tour companies to ensure they have a good reputation.
  • Budget : Determine your budget and compare the cost of cruise line excursions with private options.
  • Interests : Choose excursions that align with your interests and the type of experience you seek.
  • Group Size : Consider whether you prefer a larger group experience or a more intimate one.
  • Flexibility : If you value flexibility and customization, private tours may be the better option.
  • Safety : Regardless of your choice, prioritize safety by following the guidance of tour operators and respecting local rules.

Ultimately, both cruise line and private company excursions offer unique advantages.

Your decision should be based on what matters most to you—whether it’s convenience, cost, personalized experiences, or exploring Roatan cruise port’s hidden gems with a local touch.

Roatan Cruise Port: A Guide for Cruise Travelers (From a Caribbean Expert)

roatan cruise port ncl

Roatan is a stunningly beautiful island in the Caribbean Sea, part of the Bay Islands of Honduras. It is a popular destination for cruise travelers who want to enjoy the tropical scenery, the pristine beaches, the rich marine life, and the diverse culture of this island paradise. You’ll learn all about the Roatan cruise port in this article!

I’m a travel agent, highly-experienced itinerary planner, Virgin Voyages aficionado, and Caribbean expert. I’ve been to the Caribbean countless times and have visited Roatan twice in 2023. When visiting, I completed two different itineraries, taking me all around this incredible island.

Roatan has two cruise ports: Coxen Hole and Mahogany Bay. Virgin Voyages docks at Coxen Hole. Depending on which cruise line you choose, you will dock at one of these ports and have access to different attractions and activities.

In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the Roatan Cruise Ports, what to do while visiting Roatan, and what to know for your visit. Let’s dive in!

Quick Glance: Top Things to Do in Roatan:

  • Animal Encounters
  • West Bay Beach
  • Oak Ridge Tour

The Roatan Cruise Ports

There are two cruise ports in Roatan: Coxen Hole and Mahogany Bay . Coxen Hole (Port of Roatan) is a public port that is used by Virgin Voyages , Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, MSC Cruises, and other cruise lines. Mahogany Bay is a private port owned by Carnival Corporation and used by Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line. Both ports are located on the south side of the island, about 15 miles apart.

Coxen Hole Roatan Cruise Port

Coxen Hole is the main town and capital of Roatan, and it is where the public cruise port is located. This is the port that Virgin Voyages utilizes . It is a bustling port that has a more authentic and local feel than Mahogany Bay. Coxen Hole has a smaller shopping area with local vendors, handicrafts, and souvenirs. It also has a tourist information center, a bank, and an ATM.

Coxen Hole is the gateway to the rest of the island, and it is where you can find more options for shore excursions, transportation, and tours. You can take a taxi, a bus, or a water taxi to explore other parts of Roatan, such as West Bay, West End, Sandy Bay, or French Harbour. It does not have a beach within walking distance, but there are many nearby beaches that you can visit, such as Tabyana Beach, West Bay Beach, or Half Moon Bay Beach.

Mahogany Bay Roatan Cruise Port

Mahogany Bay is a modern and well-designed port that offers a lot of amenities and facilities for cruise travelers. It has a large shopping complex with duty-free shops, souvenir stores, restaurants, bars, and a pharmacy. It also has a transportation hub where you can book shore excursions, rent a car, or take a taxi.

The highlight of Mahogany Bay is Mahogany Beach, a private beach that is exclusive for cruise passengers. You can access the beach by walking for about 5 minutes, or by taking the Magical Flying Beach Chair, a ski-lift-style ride that costs $14 per person for unlimited rides. The beach is clean and spacious, with plenty of lounge chairs, umbrellas, cabanas, and water sports equipment for rent. There is also a beach bar and grill, a volleyball court, and a water park for kids.

Is Roatan, Honduras Safe for Cruise Port Passengers?

One of the common questions that cruise travelers have is whether Honduras is safe for cruise ships. Honduras is a developing country that has a high level of poverty, crime, and violence. However, Roatan is a separate island that is relatively safer and more peaceful than the mainland.

The cruise ports are well-secured and patrolled by security guards and police officers. The cruise lines also work closely with the local authorities and tour operators to ensure the safety and comfort of their passengers. However, this does not mean that you should let your guard down or ignore the common-sense precautions.

I felt safe all throughout Roatan. The locals were friendly and eager to have us visit as travelers. I also met a handful of travelers and ex-pats along the journey.

Things to Do in Roatan Honduras Cruise Port

Enjoy the beach.

The main attraction of Roatan is the beach! The island has over 40 miles of coastline, with white sand, turquoise water, and palm trees. You can find a beach for every taste and preference, from secluded and quiet to lively and fun. Many cruise port visitors will go to West Bay Beach. Tabyana Beach and French Key are also great options for a lovely, relaxing day.

West Bay Beach is one of the best beaches I’ve ever been to. I snorkeled along the shore and saw gorgeous colorful coral and fish. The water is very calm for swimming. And, the sand is a soft powdery white.

Along West Bay beach, there are several hotels and resorts, including the popular Infinity Bay Resort (pictured below). Infinity Bay Resort also boasts La Palapa, Beach Bar and Grill, a fun waterfront hangout with delicious seafood and flowing drinks.

Snorkel the Reef

Another major attraction of Roatan is the reef. The island is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world. The reef is home to thousands of species of fish, coral, and other marine life. It is also one of the best places in the world for snorkeling and diving, as the water is warm, clear, and calm.

You can find many spots and sites to explore the reef, from shallow and easy to deep and challenging. Some of the best spots and sites to explore the reef are West Bay Reef, Mahogany Bay Reef, and Mary’s Place which is a dive site on the south side of the island.

Experience the Culture

Roatan is not only a natural paradise, but also a cultural melting pot, with a variety of ethnic groups and languages. The island has a rich and diverse history and heritage, influenced by the indigenous, Spanish, British, African, and Caribbean cultures. You can experience the culture of Roatan by visiting some of the historical and cultural sites, such as the Roatan Museum which displays artifacts and exhibits related to the history, culture, and natural environment of the island, and Garifuna Village, the first Garifuna settlement in Central America.

Visit Roatan Chocolate Factory to see how the fresh chocolate is made on the island. While you’re there, scoop up some souveniers to take home!

You can also visit the Roatan Rum Company, which sells the most delicious rum cake! Some is packaged to easily take home from your travels, though you may have a tough time waiting to dig into it.

Encounter Wildlife

Roatan is not only a paradise for marine life, but also for land animals. The island has a diverse and abundant wildlife, with many species of animals, birds, reptiles, and insects. You can meet the wildlife of Roatan by visiting some of the animal sanctuaries and parks, such as Top Jungle, Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout, Arch’s Iguana and Marine Park, and Carambola Botanical Gardens and Trails.

Quick side note: Please do not touch or hold the sloths while visiting. This is considered animal cruelty, as sloths don’t like to be touched. Unfortunately, places that have branded themselves as sanctuaries are profiting over the exploitation of the sloths.

Tours from Roatan Cruise Port

Many travelers will take shore excursions hosted by their cruise lines, especially because of safety and assurance in getting back to the ship on time.

I recommend the following Shore Things for Virgin Voyages sailors:

  • For a fun day in the sun: Live, Lunch, Lounge French Key Beach
  • For those who just want to hit the beach: West Bay Beach Transfer
  • For the best of the island: Trifecta Tour with mangroves pictured below
  • For adrenaline: Zip Line Adventure

Other cruise lines, like MSC, offer similar excursions.

However, you’ll get to see more of the island if you hire a local guide. Please email me directly to arrange private group tours.

I’ve gone on two trips with a local guide:

  • Private highlights of Roatan (west side of the island) – lookout points, island tour, Roatan Chocolate Factory , West Bay Beach , Roatan Rum Company , animal encounter at Jungle Top
  • Private Oak Ridge tour (east side of the island) – the “Venice of Roatan”, tiki boat, mangroves (pictured above), Trico beach bar, Reef House bar & beach. This is best for those who have been to Roatan before and are seeking a different experience.

Can you walk to a beach from the cruise port in Roatan, Honduras?

It depends on which cruise port you dock at. If you dock at Coxen Hole (Virgin Voyages), you cannot walk to a beach from the port, but you can take a taxi, a bus, or a water taxi to one of the nearby beaches, such as West Bay Beach, Tabyana Beach,  or Half Moon Bay Beach. The ride takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the traffic and the destination, and costs about $10 to $20 per person, round trip.

At port, there will be many drivers aggressively trying to get you to drive with them. I would recommend taking a private tour but if you just want a ride, try to arrange with a reputable company in advance of your trip.

If you dock at Mahogany Bay, you can walk to Mahogany Beach, a private beach that is exclusive for cruise passengers. It takes about 5 minutes to walk to the beach, or you can take the Magical Flying Beach Chair.

17 Top Things to Do in Roatan on a Cruise

Guest Post

Located near the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea, Roatan is a popular cruise destination for good reason.   And we have compiled a list of some of the best things to do while your ship is in port.

Not only is this beautiful island home to one of the best diving and snorkeling locations in the world, it also has a rich cultural heritage that you can explore on one of many tours offered.

Roatan, Honduras is 36 miles long and about 4 miles wide with most of the population on the western part.  Some of the best beaches are also on this side of the island.

things to do in roatan

We have a list of 16 things to do in Roatan, but let’s start with some information about the cruise port itself.

Cruise Port Info

There are two different piers that cruise ships stop at when visiting Roatan.  Carnival cruise ships will visit Mahogany Bay while other cruise lines will stop at Coxen Hole. The piers are a couple miles away from each other.

There are many buildings and businesses around the tourist centers that include restaurants, shops, and other small establishments where you can get whatever you need for the day.

The official language of the island is Spanish, but with many people speaking English in the tourist areas, you will not need much help finding your way around.

There are buses and cars that are available for pick-ups and drop-offs if you choose to go on an excursion farther away from the port, and with many shops and restaurants accepting US dollars, you won’t have to convert your currency.

1.      West Bay Beach

west bay beach

This private beach is a good choice for families because of the shallow water that allows you to go far out in the ocean without being in too deep. Parents can allow their children to splash around in the water as much as they want while they enjoy a drink of their choice and work on their tans.

The shallow water is great for picture taking and underwater exploration because you will have a perfect look at the sea life and coral in the water. If you bring along an underwater camera, the waters allow for crystal clear photos of the life that goes on under the waves.

2.      Scuba Diving

You can take scuba diving lessons at Roatan Dive Center and get ready to go underwater for some sea diving. With beginning lessons that teach you the basics of how to put on and use your scuba gear, you will have all the skills you need to take to the water.

All scuba gear is included in the price of the lessons and you will have everything you need to begin your underwater adventure. While diving, you will get to see various sea life and creatures that live in the warm waters of Roatan and make memories that you can keep forever.

3.      Horseback Riding

In Roatan, you can choose to go horseback riding on the beach and get lessons on how to ride properly before heading out on a ride of your own. These horses are used to people and are trained for beginners and children riders.

At the West Bay, you will have individual or group lessons from experienced riders and horse owners who will show you the ropes so you will feel comfortable around the horses. Then, when you have had enough practice, you will travel together along the water for a nice gallop on the beach.

This is a top choice for animal lovers and gives you the opportunity to pet and stay with the horses as you learn how to interact with them.

4.      Local Eats

If an outdoor adventure is not apart of your vacation itinerary, then you can opt for some great local meals at the restaurants near the port. With a short walk to Eldon’s Supermarket, you will find the inside cafeteria that serves local dishes and island favorites. This choice is actually in the middle of Coxen Hole port, so you won’t be venturing far.

However, if you want to go a little further for your meal, then take a taxi from the port along the coast to other options that serve Honduran specialties and interesting fusion dishes with local fish and meats. You can also grab a cold beer, Salva Vida is the local favorite, and rest up for the walk back to the docks.

5.      Camp Bay Beach

Want to sit on a beach, but not be surrounded by dozens of other travelers? Then the Camp Bay Beach is your golden destination. You can rent an ATV to ride through the area, but you will need a taxi ride to get to the beach itself. With a semi-secluded area of land, this 2-mile long area is a quiet place to have a picnic or lay on the warm sand, but you also have a good number of medium-sized waves that come to the shore for younger kids and adventurous adults to jump into.

The area is lined with palm trees that usually have a few coconuts growing at the top, which some locals will take down and drink the sweet milk from. This area is quieter than other beaches and also makes for a romantic getaway for couples that would like to avoid crowds of families with lots of kids running around.

6.      Monkey and Sloth Hangout

This unique and unexpected excursion is one that you won’t soon forget. With the opportunity to hang out and get to know the sloths and monkeys in a controlled environment, you can pet and hold them while you visit the Monkey and Sloth Sanctuary of French Cay Roatan.

Here, you will see the different monkeys, sloths, and other tropical animals that live at the sanctuary and get to know a bit about each of their eating and sleeping habits. With these funny creatures offering a unique chance to see them in their natural habitat up close, you will be able to hold, hug, and snap a few photos with these delightful creatures to show off to your friends and family.

7.      Dune Buggy Rides

Up for some adventure? Then a ride around the island of Roatan on a dune buggy might be just the thing. These all-terrain vehicles can be rented at vendors operating at the docks and rode all over the trails around the island. These buggies will take you off the main path and away from the other tourists for some fun that avoids the large crowds that will flock to the beaches and restaurants.

These buggies also offer the opportunity to turn this excursion into a double-adventure with a ride to one of the beautiful beaches or to the monkey and sloth sanctuary. You can have guides that take you around the island to make sure you get to your intended destination, or you can just ride around by yourself. Just make it back to the cruise ship before it takes off!

8.      Ziplining

As one of the main excursions of Roatan island, ziplining is one of the best adventures you will have while docked here. You can ride on a high cable through a tropical forest for an unforgettable time. You will fly through the air and be able to see sights from a high vantage point for the best views around.

From certain areas of the zipline, you will be able to see the Caribbean waters and untouched areas of the island. However, if you are going to go with a family, make sure that you find out about the age, height, and weight limits for this excursion. Younger children who are too small may have to opt-out and those who are over the weight limit may not be able to either.

9.      Kayaking

With private waters that are made for guests and visitors staying at the resorts in the areas, you can find many excursions that you can’t get anywhere else on the island. The Little French Key is one of the private areas that you must access through the hotel. If you are coming from the cruise port, you will set up your excursion through the hotel and gain access to the area for the day.

Here, you can go kayaking in the still waters with rental equipment from vendors along the shore. You have single or multi-person options that will hold the whole family for your choice of adventure. Once you are done you can store the kayaks and spend the rest of the day at the private beach.

10.  Fresh Fruit Carts

If you want the ability to check out the local produce, but don’t want the hassle of heading to a busy sit-down restaurant in town, then you can stay close to the ship and look out for the famous Roatan fruit carts. These small carts are run by locals who supply their own fruits and flavors from around the island.

You can have a fresh pineapple or mango for a refreshingly sweet treat without having to go much further than the port gates. Stop in at one of the shops at the docks for a bottle of tajin or other spice to add some extra flavor to your fruit.

11.  Manwakie Eco Nature Park

Get your fill of family-friendly adventure with the help of the Manwakie Eco Nature Park. This park is in West End, near the West Bay Beach, and houses many different exotic animals. This park will not only give you the opportunity to check out all the amazing animals that are housed there but offers guides that will teach you about the history of Roatan Island.

Pictures are allowed in this park so you can bring a camera or phone with you to take some quick snaps of your favorite animals to capture the memories. After the tour of the park is done, you will be guided to the beach where you can spend the rest of the day lounging by the sea.

12.  Roatan Island Tour

island tour roatan

For those travelers who want to get to see all of the islands in a short time, you can book a trip for a full Roatan Island Tour. This guided tour will show you all the main sights on the island, give you some time on some of the most popular beaches, and take you to local bars and grills for a quick bite between adventures.

This tour starts early and ends right before you have to head back to the dock, but you will see a snapshot of all of Roatan in a day and get to experience multiple excursions together. You can customize the trip with a quick horseback ride or hike along the way and ask to go to specific restaurants on Roatan for an individualized tour that meets the whole group’s wants and needs.

13.  Snorkeling

Roatan is famous for it’s incredible offshore reefs, so don’t miss an opportunity to dive beneath the surface to check them out.

If you’d like to see what’s under the water’s surface but aren’t a fan of scuba diving, then snorkeling is a great choice. You can stay closer to the surface, but still get to see the tropical creatures that call the Caribbean Sea their home.

Rental equipment is available at the West End of the island where you can pay vendors cash to take out their equipment for a few hours of underwater exploration. People of all ages will enjoy this excursion, and after you’ve returned your snorkeling equipment, you will already be at the beach for a few hours of lounging before heading back to the cruise ship docks.

14. Garifuna Historical Tour

The Island of Roatan has a rich and diverse history that begins with the Garifuna people. This tour will give you information about the history of the Garifuna people, their customs and traditions, and teach you about the land they live on.

This tour offers stops at an animal sanctuary will you will learn about the native wildlife of the land, then it will take you to the Garifuna Cultural Center where you will get to see a presentation of the Garifuna people’s native dances.

This tour will give you more insight into the island and its history as well as teach you about another culture and its values and traditions. With a tour that includes a look into the lives of the native people, first-time visitors to the island will especially love this choice of excursion.

This tour offers dock pick-ups and drop-offs and shows you multiple areas of the island for an immersive experience.

15. Glass Bottom Boat Tours

This interesting and exciting tour option is a unique way to explore the underwater creatures and plant life of the island. These tours will take you out into the Caribbean Sea and along the coast of the island to see the creatures that live there, and the coral reefs along the bottom of the ocean.

These boats look very small from the shore but have a cabin that is underneath the water that comes with glass all around the boat so travelers can see straight out into the water at sea creatures swimming by. You may see many different types of fish, turtles, and sea cucumbers cross your path for a close-up view of their scaly bodies or bright fins.

The cabin of these boats is a bit small to enhance the viewing experience, so it is great for families that have small children so multiple people can fit together in the observatory at the same time. If you are not a fan of the tight space, then you can take a look from the top deck.

16. Combo Tours

Many tours on this island allow you to create a combo tour with multiple tours put together for a whole day of excursions. Each of the boat tours will offer the opportunity to stop at multiple beaches throughout the day or will wait for you on one excursion to take you to your next stop.

With options like a combo tour of the glass bottom boat and horseback riding, you will catch a ride on the boat and watch for sea creatures on the way to the beach, where you will have your horseback riding lessons. Then, you will take that same boat back to the original spot for a two-in-one treat.

These tours are customizable but must be set up ahead of time. So, if you know what you want to do, book in advance to get the most out of your trip.

17.  Gumbalimba Park

Animal lovers will find a wonderful experience at Gumbalimba Park, right near West Bay Beach.  The park does have an entrance fee, but has a lot to offer.  Visitors can find exotic birds like macaws and peacocks, and spot capuchin monkeys all around the area.   You can also go zip lining, take a nature trail, go kayaking, or just relax by the pool or beach.  There is a museum in the park as well, and you may even spot a sloth while you’re there.

The atmosphere in West End Village is always vibrant and inviting, so be sure to make the most of your time.

You will then visit the area’s only extreme adventure park to stroll a nature trail through the jungle canopy, much of it along suspension bridges. From this vantage point high above the jungle floor, you can expect to see colorful flowers clinging to vine-draped trees, chirping tropical birds flitting through the air, and creatures such as iguanas and lizards perched on the branches. In this extraordinarily peaceful setting, the sounds of the jungle will be all the more captivating.

Continuing on to a beachfront resort in the heart of West Bay Beach, you will enjoy more free time to savor the island ambiance. You might stroll the resort’s pristine stretch of sand, take a refreshing swim in the sea or simply lounge in the shade of a coconut palm. The low-key, stress-free atmosphere will leave you immensely relaxed for the return to the pier.

ATV & Mangrove Cruise

See the natural beauty that abounds in the island’s more remote regions by riding an ATV through a tropical rainforest and by cruising along the mangrove-lined shores of southern Roatan. The adventure will begin in the village of Politilly Bight, where you will hop on an ATV and race off caravan-style, following the guide into the surrounding wilderness. If it has been raining recently, the natural trails will have potholes and mud will be flying, which will make the driving all the more fun. After a brief stop at a traditional Garifuna village, you will transfer to Oak Ridge, the island’s oldest fishing community. Mangrove forests line the banks most everywhere and often create tunnels in the tree canopy that your boat can easily navigate through. Besides being environmentally beneficial, mangroves provide shelter for a myriad of animals, especially water birds such as green herons and roseate spoonbills.

• Take the wheel of an ATV and race through a tropical rainforest. • Look for water birds while cruising along the mangrove-lined coast of southern Roatan. • Pause at a Garifuna village for a glimpse at traditional life.

The Delight Of Chocolate And Rum

Duration 3 hrs

Discover how two signature Roatan products – artisan chocolates and hand-crafted rums – are made step-by-step and enjoy samplings of both. The celebrated spirits are distilled using all-natural locally sourced ingredients that are blended together to create a variety of tasty rums. Roasted cocoa beans are used in the chocolate rum, pure coconut extract is mixed into another rum, and yet another rum is spiced with vanilla and orange peels. The rums are also mixed into coffee creams, infused into cigars and used to flavor cakes. You will delve just as deeply into chocolate at a museum that showcases the history of this sweet treat made from the fruit of cacao trees. The story is fascinating as is the process of making chocolate. While driving around the island, you will also pause for photos at the multi-colored Roatan sign and at West Bay Beach, a gorgeous sugar-white stretch of sand that is immensely popular.

• Gain insight into how chocolate is made on Roatan and enjoy a sampling. • Taste a variety of Roatan rums that may be flavored with chocolate or coconut. • Stop for photos at the colorful Roatan sign and at beautiful West Bay Beach.

I've been on 50 cruises. Here are 3 routes I'd sail again in a heartbeat and 3 I'd probably skip.

  • I've been on 50 cruises (at least six a year), and some routes are better than others.
  • I try to avoid cruises that make stops at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas.
  • My favorite cruise I've ever been on was a Mediterranean voyage from Barcelona.

Insider Today

I've taken 50 cruises with family and friends, and I'm always looking to try out new routes with different port stops .

Before I ever book a cruise — which I do about six times a year — I try to find either a new-to-me ship or a new-to-me route. If neither of those options works for my budget or timeframe, I opt for a familiar favorite.

Here are my favorite cruise routes that I'm always happy to book, and the ones I don't need to sail again.

My favorite route is a Mediterranean cruise that starts and ends in Barcelona, Spain.

roatan cruise port ncl

Mediterranean cruises start and end in various ports of call around Europe, typically throughout the summer sailing season.

Last year, my family and I took a Disney Cruise that started and ended in Barcelona, with stops in France and Italy.

My favorite part of this trip was splitting a day between Nice and Eze in the French Riviera . I was able to walk through cobblestone streets overlooking the ocean while sipping on limoncello.

I love Caribbean cruises along the western ports.

roatan cruise port ncl

I've taken many western Caribbean routes over the years on Carnival Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line, and they never disappoint.

The route usually includes stops at Cozumel, Mexico, and Georgetown, Grand Cayman. But it may also include ports of call at Falmouth, Jamaica; Costa Maya, Mexico; or Roatán, Honduras.

I always get off the ship in Cozumel, even if it's just to have lunch at a taco shop. Don't get lured into the restaurants right at the docks because the best food is in the spots farther down the main street.

I also love getting off in Roatán. On a recent cruise, I took an excursion to Roatan Island Brewing Company to try different beers made with local ingredients.

I also enjoy routes that only stop at private islands.

roatan cruise port ncl

Every once in a while, I can find a short three-night cruise on Royal Caribbean or Disney that only visits the brand's private islands.

These short cruises are ideal weekend getaways and go to some of my favorite ports of call, like Royal Caribbean's CocoCay and Disney's Castaway Cay.

I love both of these destinations because there's so much to do — you really can spend the entire day at the beach or exploring the various parts of the island. I also love that food and drinks are all provided, so I don't have to return to the ship for lunch.

On the other hand, I don't need to go to Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas again.

roatan cruise port ncl

I love short cruises from Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but they often mean stopping at Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas .

I don't really think there's much to see at either stop once you've done it once or twice. If my route includes them, I usually stay on the ship to enjoy the less crowded pool and spa.

The trade-off for these two ports is often getting to visit a cruise line's private island , so I think it's worth it for that. But I don't need to go on another long cruise through the Bahamas.

I'm also not a big fan of Bimini, Bahamas.

roatan cruise port ncl

Many cruise lines, like Carnival and Virgin Voyages , are now taking cruisers to Bimini for an easy beach day. But if you're not a big fan of chilling at the beach, there's not much else to do on the island.

I’d probably skip cruising to Key West.

roatan cruise port ncl

I love Key West in the Florida Keys , but as a port stop, it was hard to see a lot of the island and explore beyond Duval Street.

I'd prefer to spend a few days in the destination to explore all that it has to offer instead of making it a cruise stop.
