Written by Deborah Moggach, adapted from her bestselling novel which inspired the BAFTA and Golden Globe-nominated film, and directed by Lucy Bailey, the cherished story will be brought to life on stage when it opens at the Richmond Theatre on Tuesday, 30th August 2022.
The tour then visits Lyceum Theatre, Sheffield; Theatre Royal, Brighton; Theatre Royal, Glasgow; Theatre Royal, Newcastle; Hall for Cornwall, Truro; Churchill Theatre, Bromley; Theatre Royal, Norwich; Curve, Leicester; The Lowry, Salford and the New Victoria Theatre, Woking before concluding at Theatre Royal, Bath next December. Further dates in 2023 are to be announced.
Based on the Sunday Times bestseller which inspired one of this century’s most treasured films, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel takes us on a journey to India with an eclectic group of British retirees as they embark on a new life. The luxury residence is far from the opulence they were promised, but as their lives begin to intertwine and they embrace the vibrancy of modern-day India, they are charmed in unexpected and life-changing ways.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a joyous, feel-good comedy about taking risks, finding love and embracing second chances, even in the most surprising of places.
Based on Deborah Moggach’s 2004 novel These Foolish Things, the film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (directed by John Madden) saw its UK theatrical release in 2012. Within two weeks of its cinematic distribution, the film had topped the UK Box Office and went on to become a hit internationally performing as one of the highest-grossing films of 2012 in Australia and New Zealand as well as the United Kingdom.
The interlinked stories of the film’s stellar ensemble, which included Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilson, Tom Wilkinson, Celie Imrie and Ronald Pickup – with Dev Patel as the put-upon owner of a past-it-best hotel for ‘the elderly and beautiful’ – shone a light on issues such as the outsourcing of care and NHS treatments, the complexity of family relationships around the world, love, compassion and companionship in our twilight years.
Deborah Moggach says of today’s announcement: “ I’m so thrilled that my characters are stepping into a new life on the stage. They’ve been waiting impatiently for the curtain to rise, and none of them is getting any younger. So welcome again to the Marigold Hotel! We’re assembling an amazing cast, so I hope they bring you plenty of laughs and some warm sparks of recognition. ”
Producer Simon Friend continues: “ I have been a huge fan of Deborah Moggach’s writing for years, so it’s an honour to work with her on this exciting new adaptation of her beloved story, which I feel has always called out to be experienced as live theatre. ”
Deborah Moggach has written 20 novels including These Foolish Things which became The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, directed by John Madden. Deborah’s screenplay for the 2005 Working Title movie of Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew McFadyen, was nominated for a BAFTA. Adaptations of other writers’ work include Nancy Mitford’s Love in a Cold Climate, The Diary of Anne Frank and Anne Fine’s Goggle-Eyes, which won the Writers’ Guild Award for Best Adapted TV Serial. The movie, Tulip Fever, based on her novel of the same name starred Christoph Waltz and Judi Dench. Deborah has adapted some of her other novels for television: Seesaw, Close Relations, Stolen and Final Demand. Double Take, Deborah’s first original stage play was produced at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester.
Lucy Bailey directs the new production. Lucy studied English at Oxford University where she directed the world premiere of Lessness by Samuel Beckett. Recent productions include: David Mamet’s Oleanna (UK Tour & West End); Gaslight (UK Tour); Witness for the Prosecution (London’s County Hall); Ghosts (Royal & Derngate, Northampton); Switzerland (Bath Ustinov / West End); Cave (a site-specific opera for London Sinfonietta and Royal Opera House, at the Print Works, London); Comus, A Masque in Honour of Chastity (Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Globe); Kenny Morgan (Arcola, London).
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is produced by Simon Friend. Full casting to be announced.

Regional Theatre Review: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Age is just a number in this Indian adventure, where the big-name line-up of pensioners take over the Marigold Hotel and show us all how to truly live.
“Adventure before dementia!” shouts Muriel (Marlene Sidaway) as she heads off into the crowded streets of Khempur to explore. As someone who has experienced the loss of a grandmother to this cruel disease, these words had me buckled in, as it’s something I think she would have said.
In fact, for me this production felt like going on holiday with grandparents. There’s moaning about the heat, morbid remarks about the end being in sight and plenty of anecdotes about better times gone by, but you can’t help falling in love with the group. They’re imperfectly perfect.
Based on the Sunday Times bestseller which inspired a film, and then this theatre tour, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel takes audiences on a journey to India with an eclectic group of British retirees as they embark on a new life in the sun. The luxury residence is far from the opulence they were promised, but as their lives begin to intertwine, they are charmed in unexpected and life-changing ways.

BAFTA and Golden Globe Award winner Hayley Mills leads the cast as Evelyn, who probably sees the biggest character development, shifting from a timid senior citizen who is reluctant to leave the hotel, to a confident woman who forms new friendships and brings the group of retired travellers together. She approaches the part with complete tenderness which is a joy to watch unfold.
This is quite the contrast to Rula Lenska whose take on Madge is vivaciously outspoken. Everyone has that one person in their family like Madge, at one point telling Jean (Eileen Battye) to shut up when gloating about some of the touristy destinations she’s visited on the trip, or cursing at Mr Gupta (Tiran Aakel) when he threatens to buy the hotel and turn it into a call centre.
Hayley Mills (left) and Rula Lenska star as Evelyn and Madge respectively.
Paul Nicholas’ portrayal of Douglas is charming, showing a kind individual who is looking for an excuse to finally speak his mind after years of putting others first - a far cry from the villainous Gavin Sullivan he’s known for in EastEnders.
The performance unfolds around one stunning set. Sure, it’s grubby in places to show that the hotel has seen better days, but if you look past that, like the characters eventually do, you’ll see columns and archways adorned with hanging green foliage.
Expect a traditional Indian set and colourful costumes.
You’ll see colourful flowers sprouting from numerous pots dotted around the stage and welcoming fairy lights that twinkle during romantic moments.
The aesthetic illustrates India beautifully, which is matched with traditional music and warm lighting to take the chill out of a cold January night in Milton Keynes.
Life is short (as we’re constantly reminded throughout!) but the message still stands strong. Time has that annoying habit of running away from you when you’re busy, and watching the penny drop for each character as they wish to have been more outgoing in their youth is a tough but inspiring watch.
“Adventure before dementia” is definitely a phrase my grandmother would have used, which is a nice motto to take away. But for me, it’s more about savouring every moment before it’s too late - and that’s exactly what you do best as group travel organisers.

Theatre Review: THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL – The Lowry, Salford
Posted in  The Lowry , Theatre , Theatre Reviews , Theatre Venues November 10, 2022
THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL UK Tour 2020. Photo Credit: Johan Persson
With its captivating set and endearing performances, THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL boasts plenty of charm, even if its script feels somewhat misplaced and outdated.
Based on Deborah Moggach’s novel and the hit 2011 film of the same name, THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL tells the story of the charming yet failing Marigold Hotel in Bangalore. After his father’s death, the enthusiastic Sonny Kapoor (Nishad Moore) proposes to his widowed mother that they turn his father’s hotel into a residential hotel for retirees. Introduce a squabbling group of seven disgruntled elderly guests, and you’re in for a treat.
Alongside Moore as Sonny was JESUS CHRIS SUPERSTAR’s Paul Nicholas as unhappy husband Douglas, and PARENT TRAP (1961) star Hayley Mills as Evelyn, a gentle, kind-hearted widow with a mischievous twinkle in her eye that catches Douglas’ attention. The relationship and chemistry that Nicholas and Mills build throughout the piece is touching in its sincerity and wholesome nature. Their scenes together, whilst simple, speak volumes and are a credit to their skill.
Another relationship that stands out is that of Sonny and his mother, Mrs Kapoor, played by Rekha John-Cheriyan. Their depiction of a mother-and-son relationship is as hilarious as it is earnest, with John-Cheriyan striking the perfect balance between a doting mother and punitive parent. Moore’s performance is equally skilful in the way that it drives the piece forward and injects some much-needed energy into the writing.
It is, however, former CORONATION STREET stars Marlene Sideaway and Rula Lenska who steals the show as Muriel and Madge, respectively. Sideaway shows excellent comedic timing throughout as the brazen Muriel and brings both heart and hilarity to the piece. She is purposeful and accomplished in her performance and commands the audience’s attention whenever she steps on the stage, which is no small achievement for a character with such few lines.
Lenska is equally charming in her performance as the forthright Madge. Where Sideaway’s command of the stage is subtle, Lenska’s is striking and distinct – both powerful in her performance and quick-witted in her delivery. She is as colourful as her characters’ costumes and is a delight to watch. As an audience, you are certainly safe in the hands of these two Weatherfield legends.
Unfortunately, the impeccably talented cast is let down by the writing. Whilst Moggach’s writing made for a fantastic book and an even more successful film, it does not always make for good theatre.
The play never really feels as though it gets going and reaches a resolution before the audience ever really gets to grips with the events that led up to it. It starts slowly before racing through the final scenes in no particular detail or order. Therefore, instead of flowing as a play, THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL feels more like a series of detached, stilted scenes strung together, with some tailing off seemingly mid-conversation rather than ending on a poignant note or pause.
While there were certainly plenty of hilarious moments from Sidewaway and Lenska as well as others, many of the other jokes fall flat, with the wording of them feeling too clunky and awkward. It is clear that Moggach has tried to update the story with this script, but her attempts to appeal to both modern and traditional audiences simultaneously have resulted in a rather confusing perspective. For example, it is never quite clear to the audience whether the guests’ ignorance and initial fear of India is intended to be satirical or relatable; and it feels as though Moggach has decided to commit to neither of these stances, leaving us in a grey area.
Likewise, the character of Norman – played by Andy De La Tour – feels as though he is written to be neither likeable nor unlikeable. However, a character that makes such consistently insensitive comments cannot be a neutral choice. It seems that Moggach cannot fully commit to her own stance on the matter, and whilst Norman’s lines may be intended as jokes, they do not appear as such, yet we still appear to be expected to like him. Perhaps the best example of this is a throwaway line from Norman about how he would prefer to be born during colonial times as it was “easier”, which is met with silence.
Many such throwaway lines throughout the play make it feel as though Moggach has yet to fully see her ideas through, rendering the dialogue irrelevant.
However, whilst the dialogue of THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL may not always be pleasing, the combination of Colin Richmond and Oliver Fenwick’s set and lighting design is a match made in heaven. Richmond has designed a truly breathtaking set that transports us to the beautiful Marigold Hotel and holds us there. The level of detail in the set is outstanding and is perhaps one of the most transformative sets of its time. Furthermore, how Fenwick’s lighting interacts with this is exquisite, creating an overwhelmingly strong sense of time and place. Visually, this play certainly knows how to capture a moment, even if the writing does not always hold us there.
For despite Moggach’s attempts to update the script, the story itself will always be somewhat outdated in its ideas. There is something that doesn’t sit right over ten years later about the idea of upper-class white retirees casting judgement upon Indian culture and the idea that Indian people have something to learn from this. It is a rather shallow exploration of the real issues that people in India face, and instead of exploring these issues in any depth, the story paints over them with generic finger-wagging and misplaced righteousness.
Whilst the writing of THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL was disappointing, it is nevertheless a fun and entertaining watch brimming with talent. With a captivating set and endearing performances from an outstanding cast, there is plenty of charm to be found here. Some truly strong relationships are at the heart of the piece and how they are developed, whether the friendships formed or the blossoming romances. Ultimately, THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL teaches us that it’s never too late to start living.
THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL runs at The Lowry , Salford, until 12 November 2022.
