All models are equipped with a Bosch motor and battery, Shimano derailleurs and hydraulic disc brakes, lights, as well as all the accessories necessary for daily riding.

The Trek Allant+ is every city commuter’s dream as its Bosch motor provides plenty of torque and the 500-625 Wh batteries offer enough capacity for a few days of riding. In case that’s not enough for you, you can also add a second long-range battery to double the range.

The only disadvantage with these is that the rear racks on the more expensive models sit lower than the fenders, so you may only use them to attach panniers. You can’t use them to strap a basket or a backpack on top. Though it’s fair to say that most commuters travel with panniers so this may be a problem only for a select few.

Apart from the potential issue some riders may have with the rear rack that we mentioned above, Trek Allant+ doesn’t really have any downsides.

The main thing that will deter some people from buying it is its price. Namely, you can get a much cheaper model from direct-to-consumer brands that does pretty much the same things that the Allant+ models do.

Despite its premium price tag, the Trek Allant+ delivers a remarkable fusion of comfort, style, and performance.

The most prominent highlight from our time on the bike was the overall feel and performance of its 250W Bosch Performance Line Speed mid-drive motor. As a result of this premium drive system, the Allant+ responds naturally and proportionally to changes in pedaling with smooth assistance, yet never loses an analog bike feel.

With a Bosch drive system comes the ability to be paired with the multifunctional Bosch COBI.BIKE app. This app serves as a hub that integrates with your favorite audio, fitness, and navigation apps, allowing you to track ride data, listen to music or audiobooks, make calls to your closest contacts, and receive turn-by-turn guidance to your destination.

We couldn’t help but appreciate the bike’s overall high-quality feel and confident handling. With 2.4” wide tires and a weight of 57 lbs, the Allant felt firmly planted, but it retained the nimble handling of a lighter-weight city bike.

Additionally, as a Trek product, it felt generally well-rounded with comfortable, precise geometry, top-tier components, and a sturdy frame.

Trek Allant+ 8s Review: Speed Test

To perform our Speed Test, I pedaled the Allant+ 8s on a flat section of our local network of multi-use paths, filmed the process, and recorded the maximum speeds I reached in each of the bike’s four pedal assist settings.

During this test, it was important that I maintained a moderate level of effort due to the mid-drive motor/torque sensor; this combination allows the motor to dispense a greater amount of pedal assistance when using more effort, or put out less power when riding casually. My goal was to find an average level of speed with the assumption that those using more or less effort could expect slightly different results.

When pedaling with no pedal assistance, I comfortably reached a surprising top speed of 13.4 miles per hour. The power level of the Allant’s lowest pedal assist system (PAS) setting, Eco Mode, was subtle, and raised my top speed to 14.7 mph. Tour mode seemed to make a much greater difference; I reached 19.2 mph there. Sport and Turbo Modes provided measured increases in power which allowed me to reach 22.4 and 25.2 mph respectively.

Overall, the power distribution of the Bosch system was remarkably even; each setting provided an expected, intuitive increase in assistance. I was surprised to note that even with maximum assistance in Turbo Mode, the Allant+ 8s still felt much like an analog bike; were it not for the sound of the motor and the ease of which I was able to reach superhuman speeds, I would not have guessed I was on an e-bike.

This is due in large part to Bosch’s tuning and programming, though more broadly, it’s also a side effect of relatively low motor output. 36V motors with 250W of nominal output are on the subtle side, drawing power more slowly and magnifying the effort of the rider to a lesser degree than motors with higher voltage and/or watts. As such, similar motors are used often on higher-end e-bikes that aim to retain a non-electric feel.

This test showed us that the Allant is made for riders who enjoy a traditional cycling experience. Those who prefer riding slower or elevating their heart rate might select Eco or Tour mode, while those looking for more speed and a less strenuous ride may find Sport or Turbo modes to be ideal.

With nearly 75 miles of range and the ability to add a range boost battery, the Allant+ 8s has serious commuter chops!

Trek Allant+ 8s Review: Range Test

We performed two Range Tests using the Allant+ 8s to determine a realistic mileage bracket that most riders could expect to fall within. To establish this bracket, we rode the bike in Eco Mode and Turbo Mode until the battery expired, using Strava to document our mileage and the duration of each test.

In Turbo Mode, our tester Brendan traveled 29.8 miles over the course of 1 hour and 37 minutes. We covered over twice the distance in Eco mode; our riders measured 74.8 miles after spending 6 hours and 4 minutes on the bike.

This is an impressive distance, though when compared to similar commuter e-bikes we tested previously by numbers alone, the Allant+ appears to be relatively average. One component of this surface-level comparison is the fact that we have tested a handful of similar e-bikes with remarkable efficiency; this has inevitably skewed the results.

In truth, the Allant+ 8s was not as efficient as we expected it to be based on its motor and battery specs, though once again, its results in this test were far from poor. With a 250W nominal/600W peak motor and a 625 Wh battery, we anticipated that our Turbo mode test would yield roughly 55 miles over a 2.5 hour time period.

Our actual results produced 35% less time and 46% fewer miles than expected, which suggests that the bike’s motor was drawing more power from the battery than anticipated. This makes sense when considering that the Allant+ had a higher-than-average average speed during this test; most of the other Class 3 commuters with mid-drive motors had an average speed below 20 mph, while the Allant maintained an average of 22.3 miles per hour.

Regardless of its position in comparison to similar commuter e-bikes we’ve tested, we consider the Allant+ 8s to be successful in providing a highly practical range, especially when in its low power setting.

However, for those who need the ability to cover more miles with a higher assistance level or those planning an extended trek (apologies for the pun), the brand offers a supplemental 500 Wh Range Boost battery. When adding this external battery to the mounts on the down tube, we believe riders could expect roughly an 80% increase in overall range.

Trek Allant+ 8s Review: Hill Test

Compared to other commuter-style e-bikes we have reviewed, the Allant+ 8s gave a relatively average performance, but our focus in this test is not to reward the bike with the fastest time, but instead to recognize general ability.

The Allant+ proved to be competent at assisting our ascent, requiring only a comfortable but steady level of effort in Turbo Mode to reach the top of the hill. In this setting, the Bosch Performance Line Speed motor is advertised as providing up to 340% power in proportion to the rider’s effort. While we have no way of testing this for precision, the 250W mid-drive has a maximum output of 600W and 85 Nm of torque, which is a significant amount of force to aid in uphill travel.

To be clear, the Allant+ 8s does require active pedaling, but our experience at Hell Hole Trail was enjoyable and far from strenuous. I have personally pedaled up (or rather, attempted to pedal up) the path on an analog bike, which was an experience I have no desire to repeat. For an e-bike like the Allant to turn that exhausting endeavor into a fun and spirited experience is truly a delight.

I should also point out that the bike includes an impressive gearing range to make climbing easier when using a lesser amount of pedal assistance. With a 46T chainring and a 10-42T cassette, riders can pedal efficiently even on steep roads or paths.

Bottom line, while there are some similar e-bikes that can conquer steep hills faster, there are also plenty that a cyclist riding the Allant+ 8s would leave behind. The bike is extremely capable of “flattening” hills and turning exhaustion into exhilaration.

The bike is equipped with a high-performance Tektro Orion 4-piston hydraulic brake system with 180mm front and rear rotors. We expected the Allant to perform well in this test with this brake system, as it is uncommon in our experience for such powerful brakes to be included on an e-bike of this type.

We were not disappointed! For comparison, the average stopping distance for all of the commuter e-bikes we’ve tested is 21’-10”, so the Allant+ performed noticeably better than average.

At 57 lbs, the Allant+ 8s is relatively middle-of-the-road in terms of weight, but well within the range that makes two-piston brakes effective. Such a robust four-piston ensures excellent stopping ability even when traveling at Class 3 speeds up to 28 miles per hour.

The brakes felt every bit as effective as their numbers suggest; even when flying downhill at speeds exceeding 30 miles per hour, the Allant felt stable and its speed completely under control. Its stability remained when slowing down; I experienced slight fishtailing when braking hard, but nothing out of the ordinary.

With that in mind, we wish that the blinking tail light functioned as a brake light (indicator lights would be great, too, but we’ll start small). It is fantastic to have such reliable stopping power when traveling at high velocity, but the ability to communicate with other drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians is equally important.

Prospective buyers should feel confident in the bike’s brakes, however; the Tektro Orion system provides fast, powerful stopping power and the ability to easily modulate speed.

Trek Allant+ 8s Review: Ride Quality

In terms of comfort, the bike excels; its riding position, while having a slight forward-lean, is mostly relaxed and upright. It features a well-shaped Bontrager Commuter Comp saddle with a great balance of softness and supportiveness. The bike includes ergonomic rubber grips with plenty of support, and large rubberized pedals with plenty of grab – but no pegs to inflict shin wounds in the event of a slip.

The Allant+ is offered in three frame sizes and two frame styles; the high-step we tested fits riders between 5’-5” and 6’-6”, while the step-thru or “Stagger” model is made for shorter riders between 5’-1” and 6’-1”. At 5’-11”, I fit squarely in the middle of the accommodation range for the Large frame, and it felt perfect for me in terms of saddle height, reach, etc.

As I mentioned previously, the bike felt firmly planted, but still handled incredibly responsively. Its 660mm handlebars provided quick steering, and ultimately felt wider and roomier than they were. The 27.5”x2.4” Bontrager E6 Hard-Case Lite tires helped the bike feel stable and offered cushioning to help counteract the absence of a suspension – which itself plays a role in the bike’s confident handling but makes bumps more pronounced.

A huge element that contributed to the overall ride feel of the Allant+ is its Bosch Performance Line Speed mid-drive motor. In addition to providing a remarkably smooth and consistent feel to its pedal assistance, the system includes highly functional technology to make rides easier and more enjoyable.

Our test bike was outfitted with the manufacturer’s SmartphoneHub that includes a basic black-and-white LCD, but features a spring loaded clamp mount that allows riders to use their smartphone as a display. When paired with the bike through Bosch’s COBI.BIKE app, users have seamless access to up to 10 pre-selected contacts for making calls with Bluetooth headphones/earbuds, streaming songs through Apple Music or Spotify, turn-by-turn navigation with Apple Maps, ride tracking through Strava or Komoot, and health/fitness data through Apple Health or Google Fit.

We found the app to be highly functional in most cases, though as with any technology, there was a slight learning curve to the app and the bike’s multi-functional control panel. Once it was set up, my phone became a true unified dashboard that felt more in line with what I expect in an automobile. I appreciated that the app could be manipulated through my phone or (more reliably) the bike’s button panel, and I also liked that simply removing and/or rotating my phone would return control to the bike’s integrated LCD and stop ride tracking.

The phone mount itself is something I hope Bosch improves in the future; the spring loaded top portion of the clamp felt rather flimsy, and in fact broke at some point during our testing. When diagnosing the issue, we observed that the mechanism seemed to be held together with two tiny screws that did not seem to be stout enough for a moving component. Sturdier construction would be appreciated, but in the meantime, a separate phone mount may be good to keep on hand – the handlebars have enough real estate to make that option practical.

One other thing prospective owners should be aware of is that the bike’s light system is always active when the bike is turned on. Our contact at Trek advised us that this is a setting within the Bosch system that was selected for safety reasons, but it can be changed to provide more direct control to the user. As long as your local bike shop services Bosch systems, their technicians should have the ability to alter the light settings.

Aside from these relatively minor concerns, the overall feel of the Allant+ 8s was of a solidly built, high-quality, responsive, and dialed-in e-bike. We hope to see a few small improvements, but there is simply a huge “WOW!” factor to the bike as-is.

Trek Allant+ 8s Review: Summary / Where to Buy

In our testing, the Allant+ appeared relatively average – but it is important to consider that average is a pretty high bar. The bike has remarkably smooth pedal assistance with intuitive programming, the ability to reach blazing speeds, plenty of power to make climbing steep hills enjoyable, and brakes that can stop on a dime.

We hope to see some minor improvements on the next version of the bike, including a sturdier phone mount/display unit, a brake light, and a way of turning the lights off – but even with these things in mind, the Allant+ 8s is a highly capable commuter that we thoroughly enjoyed testing.

With a huge degree of comfort, the ability to keep up with traffic, the reserves to cover a significant distance before needing to be recharged, and the backing of a global brand, we gladly give our seal of approval to the Allant+ 8s.

Commuter e-bikes tend to come in two varieties, the laid-back casual cruisers, and those ready to whip through the city streets with speed. The Trek Allant+ falls into the latter group, with handling that’s sharp to a fault, with options to suit any type of commuter cyclist.

We spent a few weeks rolling around town, hitting the market, and exploring neighborhoods to see how the Allant+ 8S handled everything from bike paths to city streets…

The Allant+ e-bike line debuted in September 2019 and now has four models, the 7, 7S, 8S and 9S, with standard and step-thru frame options. The 7-series ($3,750) uses a 20mph max-assist Bosch Performance Line motor and has a lower step-thru design.

The 7S/8S/9S ($4,049 to $6,349) use the faster 28mph Bosch Performance Speed motors (for North America, anyway) and have a “Stagger” step-thru frame design that’s not quite as low, but should still work for most any rider.

The Trek Allant+ 8S uses a Bosch head unit housed inside a custom COBI mount. This gives you the option of using their small LCD screen for essential metrics like battery life, speed, distance, etc. Or, mount your phone and run the COBI app to get more data and run mapping, calls, music controls, and more through that app.

The computer/mount sits above a 500 Lumen headlight, which is bright enough for general riding. A small bell on the right sits in stark analog contrast to the multi-function, multi-button remote for the drive system. It cycles data on both the built-in screen and on the app, when connected.

The tangle of wires is somehow not so obnoxious despite having five different lines running from the cockpit to the headtube, where everything gets funneled into the frame for an overall very clean look. I like that the shaping extends from the top tube in to the headtube and mimics Trek’s high end carbon road bikes.

The hydroformed alloy frames are beautiful, and the satiny gray paint on our test bike was a perfectly understated yet premium color for an urban commuter. The only part of the bike that seemed slightly off was the gap at the front of the battery cover.

The bike comes with Bontrager’s wire-bead HardCase Lite 27.5×2.4″ tires, which are not tubeless ready. But the rims are should you want to make the switch down the road.

Trek’s Allant+ models are compatible with an external Bosch 500Wh battery, which complements the 625Wh integrated battery on the “S” models. This nearly doubles the range, and Trek claims you could get up to 100 miles per charge when adding the booster battery (sold separately). And this explains why the Stagger models use a slightly taller “top tube”…so that the extra battery still fits underneath it.

The auxiliary battery mounts to the three bolts on the downtube. But, fortunately, hiding under my Abus Bordo folding lock are two standard water bottle cage mounts, and a third set of bolts sits under the top tube. So, you can still run two bottles even if you’re using the extra power pack.

The 8S comes with a Shimano Deore 10speed group and hydraulic disc brakes. Alloy cranks and full-size chainguard around the chainrings kept my shoelaces and pant legs from getting eaten.

All models come with full coverage fenders, but the 8S/9S upgrade to better, all-alloy version with low-slung rear rack that’s perfect for side-mounted pannier bags. If you’re looking to run a standard rack bag “trunk” on the top, the 7/7S models have a more traditional looking rack that sits above the fender.

All models have an integrated taillight, and this one has a constant-on with an intermittent flash to catch attention, and it turns on when you turn on the bike. I’ll add that the fenders on this bike were rock solid.

The hydroformed tubes not only looked good, they also make for a very stiff, strong frame. Fork included…which is one of the odd spec choices here.

The 7S comes with a suspension fork, the 8S and 9S do not…but, the 9S is full carbon fiber, frame and fork. Personally, I’d put a suspension fork on all of them, and you’re about to find out why…

Trek Allant+ 8S ride review

For a rider like me who enjoys the ride but also just wants to get where I’m going (because A. fast is fun, and B. I got stuff to do), the Trek Allant+ S models are perfectly quick.

I’ve said before and probably will say it for every e-bike I review: If you’re a “cyclist” then you absolutely want to spend the extra to get a Class 3 (28mph max assist) model, especially for road/gravel/city. Anything less will leave you disappointed no matter how great the bike is otherwise.

The Allant+ has no problem getting up to speed or keeping up with downtown traffic, and that’s exactly the way it should be if you’re riding in the city. Bosch’s Performance Speed systems are great and have been for years, nothing new here.

Despite my XL test bike’s tall looks, it feels like the center of gravity is low. Which makes sense considering the motor and battery are down at the bottom of the bike.

Unlike most eMTBs, this one sticks with regular length cranks – 170mm on the Medium, and 175mm on the Large and XL. There are no Small frame sizes for these, but the Stagger step-thru models come in S/M/L.

Even if you don’t use the COBI app, which I chose not to, the holster is a great spot for your smartphone. It’s a universal design that easily held an iPhone Plus with case.

The Trek Allant+ is the snappiest handling e-bike I’ve ridden. The geometry and fork rake/offset combine to give the bike very quick handling.

When diving into a corner, the bike wants to dive harder and harder the more your turn the handlebar. At low speeds, like when navigating tight spaces or turning a sharp corner, this means the bike will change directions quickly. But it can also feel like the wheel wants to flop into the turn a bit and, occasionally, corner a little harder than you may have planned.

This is definitely a LOW speed phenomenon as you’re unlikely to turn that hard at speed, but something I wanted to mention. Because, that precise, snappy low speed handling comes at the expense of high speed stability if you’re the type of person that likes to ride with their hands off the bars .

I emphasize that because under normal riding, it’s fine, and feels great at speed. But if you like to sit up and cruise hands free, or just loosely keep one hand on while chatting with friends, the Allant+ won’t hold a line as well as some other bikes. All of which underlines my impression that this bike is built for speed.

So, about that fork and frame. The Allant+ frame is very stiff. To compensate, I lowered the tire pressure a bit more than normal to cushion the ride.

Which only amplified the low-speed steering as the meaty 2.4″ tires planted a firm patch of rubber on the ground and grabbed hard.

Overall, I really like this bike. For the price it’s extremely well equipped. But, dollar for dollar, I’d rather see them put a suspension fork on it than the COBI system as I think it would add more overall enjoyment for most riders.

Properly inflated tires will give this bike a harsh ride, which isn’t just a comfort thing – hit a pothole when you’re not paying attention and it can jar your hands and arms enough to throw them off a bit, which could cause you to wreck. A suspension fork, even a reasonably affordable one, solves this and would likely make this bike one of the best, and best looking, “fast commuters” I’ve tested. Buy Now at Trek Bikes

After 5,000 miles on street/city/sidewalk riding ….rear rim developed crack around spoke hole. No parts available. Expensive Allant+ 8s with dual battery purchase….not worth the money. Could have bought 3 really good e-bikes….

That’s a fairly common failure on many bikes/rims, regardless of e-bike, price, etc. There are many, many factors that could contribute to that. Fortunately, the Allant+ 8S uses fairly standard Alex MD35 27.5″ rims in 32h. In normal times, those should be a readily available replacement part.

Those could be replaced with just about anything. My recommendation would be something more burley, like the SunRingle Duroc SD42 which has nearly the same internal width, but a thicker spoke bed, welded joint, and stainless eyelets. Should make for a much stronger wheel. The rims are also in stock at various places.

It can’t hold enough weight. Too expensive for wheels not fit for a muscular or slightly heavy rider + backpack of errand stuffs. You will get failure in the wheels, and if you are honest, you will not have any claim in a warranty.

They need to make any/every ebike capable of holding the bike weight + 290 lbs at a minimum. Anything else is for lightweight riders and honestly, just overpriced junk.

I bought this bike brand new at the end of April. Three months & 250km later the speed sensor failed which forced the bike into limp mode. It’s been broken for over 2 weeks and still waiting on Trek to fix, with an ETA of 2 more weeks. They did not communicate how long the repair was going to take until I called them up after a week of no contact.

Would not buy an Allant or any Trek bike again.

This is not a Trek problem. It is a worldwide supply chain problem. Trek is probably #1 in parts availability, of any bike company in the world. Trek is also very high quality. But, as you know, sometimes a product does not hold up as expected. Sorry you are having this problem. If you bought a lower quality brand, you could easily have worse problems. Note: I do not work in the bike industry (I am in the supply chain industry).

I Would Ride Trek's new electric bike everywhere (if I could afford it)

A seriously fun, and seriously expensive, electric bike.

The wind whooshed through my hair as I effortlessly pedaled uphill through Central Park. Other riders, stuck on their 20th-century bicycles, looked on in sweaty envy as they pumped their legs. 

I couldn't help but smirk as I even passed two riders bedecked in professional cycling gear. Yes, they were getting exercise, but I was letting technology do the work for me.

The reason for my two-wheeled top-loftiness was that I was riding Trek's new Allant+ eBike, which uses pedal-assist technology to give you an extra boost while riding. The motor and battery, made by Bosch, have been improved to give the bike a nearly 100-mile range, and it pairs with a smartphone app that not only shows you how fast you're going, but offers turn-by-turn directions too. 

This ain't the Huffy from your childhood. Trek's Allant+ series starts at $3,599; the model I rode costs $5,999.

Trek Allant+ Pricing and Availability

The Trek Allant+ Series is available online now, and should be at Trek dealers in October. Trek will offer three models of the Allant+ in multiple configurations.

The Allant+ 7 and Allant+ 8 (starting at $3,599) will each come in four variations, including a low-step version and a Sport version, which increases the pedal-assist speed to up to 28 miles per hour. Both have metal frames.

The Allant+ 9.9S is available only in a sport version, though a low-step model will be available. The 9.9S' frame is made of carbon fiber, which shaves about 4 pounds off the total weight. 

All models except the (Allant 7+ low-step version) can be configured with an extra 500Wh battery, which will increase the bike's range to up to 160 miles.

Allant+ Smart Bike Features

To get the most out of the Allant+, you'll need to download Bosch's app (available for Android and iOS), which, when connected to the bike via Bluetooth, displays your speed, direction, and more in real-time. A clip in the middle of the handlebars holds your phone securely in place, and a USB cable from the bike's battery provides extra juice to your phone. 

The app can also be linked to smartwatches with heart-rate sensors (such as the Apple watch ) so you can view your heart rate on your phone. Other features of the app include turn-by-turn directions using Google Maps, music controls, and the ability to store up to 10 contacts, in case you want to make a phone call during your ride.

You can control most of these functions by tapping your phone's screen or by pressing buttons located on the left handlebar. Here, you'll also find two buttons that let you switch between the bike's four pedal-assist modes: Eco, Tour, Sport and Turbo. The greater the pedal-assist, the lower the range. 

Performance: As Easy as Riding a Bike

I took a 6-mile loop of Central Park on the Trek Allant+ 9.9S and was impressed with how easy it was to zoom up hills. As soon as I started pedaling, the assist motor kicked in, giving me a real boost and making it feel as if I was on level ground. The motor ramps up smoothly, so it's not jarring. 

In no time, I was cruising along, hitting speeds of up to 30 miles per hour on downhills and straightaways, and zipping past everyone. The bike itself handled well and felt very stable when taking corners. 

It was a real joy to ride, especially on a nice sunny day. I probably could have ridden it until its battery ran out.

Outlook: Great If You Can Afford It

Electric pedal-assist bikes are still a niche product in the U.S. for two reasons: They're expensive, and this country doesn't have roads and infrastructure that are as bike-friendly as those in Europe. 

Still, if I had to commute between 10-20 miles by car (and not on major highways), I could see real value in picking up an eBike to save some wear and tear on my automobile and give me a bit of exercise in the process. If you don't have to go as far, an electric scooter might be a more cost-effective option. 

With a starting price of $3,599, Trek's Allant+ eBike is an expensive proposition, but it's a fun one.

Trek Allant+ 8S Stagger Review: Takeaway

If you’re after a powerful electric road bike that will deliver power up to 28 mph, the Trek Allant 8+ Stagger could well be it. For an electric bike with a price of just under $4,500, you won’t find a much speedier option.

We love the range on this — even in a mid-power setting, you’ll get up to 60 miles, which is more than enough for a day in the saddle. For those considering the odd day’s trekking on your electric bike, the 500Wh range extender can give you a total distance of 100 miles of economical riding.

Could the Trek Allant 8+ Stagger be the new king of electric utility bikes? With its COBI.Bike smartphone control system, great range, and Bosch Performance Speed mid-drive motor, this is the apex machine where city cycling is concerned.

The COBI.Bike app acts as an onboard computer, letting you see your distance, speed, and other stats. Many riders end up clipping their phone to the handlebars anyway, so the ability to control the electric bike through the smartphone is a breath of fresh air. The e-bike can even act as a charger, allowing you to navigate big rides without killing the phone’s battery.

Reasons to Buy

As with many Trek e-bikes, you have the choice of three frame sizes: S, M, and L. This lets you enjoy a nice ride no matter your height.

We also like the Bosch Performance Speed motor. Light and powerful, it will keep on pushing even as you get up to 28 mph.

Finally, another unique feature is the Removable Integrated Battery compartment. You can store your battery directly in the frame and remove it without any extra tools.

Things to Consider

Pedaling at close to 30 mph will make you break a sweat! Your legs will pump so hard at those speeds with the 11-tooth highest gear that it might be uncomfortable. Reaching 20-25 mph is a fast cruise on any electric bike, so this may just be too powerful.

While the Allant 8+ Stagger doesn’t come with a throttle, we don’t think it needs one. Given that it has such a large battery and great power output on pedal assist, you won’t break a sweat on a normal ride.

The Trek Allant 8+ Stagger is light and efficient compared to other e-bikes with big power and long range, but this comes at the sacrifice of its hefty price tag.

The Alliant+ 8S Stagger is a Class-3 e-bike that’ll take you up to 28 mph. Given that the smallest sprocket on the cassette has 11 teeth, you’ll find yourself pedaling hard to achieve this speed. Reaching the top speed will require power support on all but the fastest downhill stretches, and though that can be fun, it’s a little beyond the needs of most riders since typical riding is at 15-20 mph on the flat.

The 2.4” tires will offer a lot of rolling resistance, too, meaning you’ll drain the battery fairly quickly on a 28 mph sprint. Other factors that can impact riding speed are hills, weather conditions, and rider/cargo weight.

Because it’s too powerful, the Alliant+ 8S Stagger also goes through battery quite quickly at higher speeds. However, if ridden sensibly at speeds of 15-20 mph on lower power settings, you’ll get 50 miles out of the 625 Wh battery without too much worry.

Remember that with hilly terrain and higher rider weight/cargo loads as well as inclement weather conditions, you’ll get fewer miles per charge. Rider style (and responsibility toward other road users) is another factor.

Sat in an upright, classic position, you’ll find the Alliant+ 8S Stagger a comfortable ride on the road. The e-bike has rigid alloy forks meant specifically for road use. It also comes with quite wide, 2.4” tires on 27.5” wheels that will handle most uneven surfaces.

One piece of technology that adds to your comfort is the ability to use your phone as the main controller. You’ll only have to look in one spot for all the parameters of your ride. On other e-bikes, you’ll be looking away from the road for longer as you look at different screens.

This bike isn’t ideal for riders under 5’1” or over 6’1”, but it’s comfortable for those in the most common adult height range.

If ridden hard, this e-bike will require regular maintenance. One of the key factors affecting chain and cassette life is the wattage put through the pedals. Ridden normally, the chain may stretch beyond tolerance every 750 miles or so. Ridden at the max 28 mph speed regularly, these components will last fewer miles.

Trek offers a lifetime warranty on the frame and a two-year warranty on things like the forks. Meanwhile, motor and battery supplier Bosch offers five years on its motors.

Offered in a light gray or black color scheme, the Allant+ 8S Stagger is a stylish and modern electric bike you’ll love to be seen riding on. Its shape is very much of the current style with its slightly square tubes and comfortable geometry. The 27.5” wheels and comfortably wide road tires make for an electric bike that’s pleasing to the eye.

Observations:

  • The Trek Allant+ models replace the older Trek Dual Sport+ , which was a hardtail hybrid ebike designed for use in city and light trail environments. The frame is purpose-built with internally routed cables and an arched hydroformed top tube that looks beautiful
  • The Allant+ 7 Lowstep is not compatible with the optional Bosch Range Boost battery pack… so if you plan on using this ebike for long range trekking or touring and know that you want a second pack to double battery capacity, consider the Diamond (high-step) frame or look at other trek models like the Allant+ 7S which is a speed pedelec available in the United States, which comes in a staggered mid-step design and is compatible with Range Boost
  • Trek is one of the “Big Three” bicycle manufacturers along with Giant and Specialized. Trek started out in 1975 making hand-brazed steel frames, and since then they have grown into a global powerhouse in the cycling industry with distributors in 90 different countries and hundreds of dealers which assemble and support the products. There are more frame size options with each model here than with many other brands
  • You might notice the Bontrager name on a lot of components in this review, Bontrager is Trek’s in-house component brand and is therefore common on many of Trek’s electric bikes
  • A sporty, comfortable, all-purpose electric bike with slightly wider all-terrain tires, highly adjustable spring suspension fork, and capable 180mm Shimano hydraulic disc brakes. The Allant+ models replace the older Dual Sport+ models from Trek
  • Higher quality included fenders, rear rack, and integrated lights make this an excellent choice for commuters. Optional second battery pack (for the high-step frame only) make this a good choice for trekking or touring
  • The fenders are fairly nice, black support arms blend in with the color scheme of the frame (black chainring protector, black suspension fork with anodized stanchions, black spokes, hubs etc.), they are wide enough and long enough to provide good coverage in wet conditions, they didn’t rattle much (but occasionally a little rock would get flicked up and click around), and they will be lighter and more durable than steel or aluminum alloy
  • The rear rack is fairly narrow and almost looks like it’s free-standing, but there’s a sturdy metal piece that hides under the fender and connects to the seat stay arch. This rack uses standard gauge tubing, so it will be compatible with more accessories. It has bungee loops at the base of the main support arms, it’s compatible with Racktime slide accessories, and it’s rated up to 25kg 55lbs which is great
  • The front fender is connected directly to the suspension fork lowers vs. plastic cuffs like on many other ebikes. This upgraded fork with direct mounts means your fender won’t get bumped out of position as easily, and you won’t hear it rubbing on the tire nubs
  • Trek has this ABC safety campaign of “always on, biomotion, contrast” which you can see in the silver paint accents, reflective tires, and integrated lights. The headlight is mounted to the base of the steer tube vs. the arch of the suspension, so it’s sprung and won’t bounce around but it still points where you steer. Both the headlight and rear light are extra bright and have side windows to keep you visible from more angles. The headlight has a mirror design inside that keeps light pointing down at the road/trail vs. up into the eyes of oncoming traffic/cyclists. The bike also comes with a flick bell that seemed like it would last
  • The Allant+ 7 comes in three frame sizes for both step-thru and high-step models! This provides a great range of fit options, and they scale the stem and crank arms to each frame. Since Trek has lots of dealers, you can actually go in and find the perfect size for the best ride experience
  • Both the high-step and step-thru models have bottle cage bosses, though the high-step has two and the step-thru only has one. I appreciate the positioning of the bottle mount on the step-thru because it’s far up the top tube and out of the way
  • Great kickstand position, it’s far back, clear of the left crank arm so you won’t get heel strikes when pedaling. It’s also positioned directly below the rack to support heavier loads
  • The Allant+ 7 uses a 31.6mm seat post, which is fairly wide. This provides strength and many possibilities for seat post droppers and suspension posts. This is a good consideration for people with back, neck, and shoulder sensitivity, or if you ride frequently and over long distances
  • I like most of the accessories that Trek chose here, the locking ergonomic grips, highly adjustable suspension fork (with lockout, preload, and rebound adjust), the saddle, and the extra large plastic platform pedals
  • The tapered headtube and 15mm thru-axle are sturdy, more trail-capable hardware, and it means you could upgrade to an even nicer air suspension fork someday if you wished vs. a straight 1-1/8″ with a 9mm quick release axle
  • Great rims and tire choice, I think this is one area where Trek saved weight on the bike. Notice the width of the Alexrims and how they have 32 spokes vs. 36. These are higher quality double-wall rims that support the slightly wider 2.25″ wide Schwalbe G-One tires that have an “all around” puncture resistant casing. By choosing a 27.5″ diameter wheel vs. 26″ they are offering a smoother ride over bumps due to lower attack angle and more cushion because of increased air volume
  • Trek designed a battery system called RIB (removable integrated battery) that is basically a shield with a handle that is screwed onto the Bosch PowerTube battery pack. This RIB system is easy to remove from the right side of the frame and safer to carry around. You can charge the battery on or off the bike, and you can charge two batteries simultaneously if you get the optional Bosch Range Boost battery… both packs drain simultaneously as well, so you won’t over-cycle one pack with shorter rides
  • I consider this ebike to be fairly lightweight at ~47lbs, especially considering the rack, fenders, and lights that come standard. However, you can reduce the weight of the bike by another 7.1lbs by removing the battery pack. This is a great approach for lifting the bike or transporting it on car racks. I have been taught that storing the bike at half full and away from extreme heat is best for the lithium-ion cells. Extreme cold will temporarily stunt the battery, and limit range, but isn’t as damaging as extreme heat
  • The battery pack locks into the frame using an ABUS core with PLUS keys that can be matched to ABUS locks, it’s a great setup and one of the highest-end locksets around, more info on the official ABUS website
  • Trek chose the 4 amp Bosch charger for faster turnaround time, which is especially relevant for people who opt into the second battery pack for the high-step. The charger is relatively lightweight, compact, and can fill the battery on or off the frame without the need for any dongles. The proprietary plug interface is durable and won’t get confused with other charging devices you might own… it’s my favorite charger!
  • Compared to the equally-priced 2019 Trek Dual Sport+, the motor is massively upgraded. The Allant+ 7 uses the top-of-the-line Bosch Performance Line CX, which offers up to 75 newton meters of torque. It’s going to spend battery power faster than the standard Performance Line or Active Line motors, but it’s very satisfying and trail capable for starting and climbing
  • The Bosch Performance Line CX motor has gotten a lot smaller and lighter than the fourth generation, weighing 2.5lbs less than Gen 3. I like how Trek has added a vented aluminum alloy skid plate below, to reduce damage if you hit a rock or log
  • The Bosch electric bike motor controller measures rear wheel speed, pedal cadence, and pedal torque over 1,000 times per second and is one of the more reliable and reputable ebike drive systems around. Bosch has partnered with Magura in North America to provide great customer support if issues arise
  • Trek, Shimano, and Bosch probably worked together so that the rear wheel speed sensor could be mounted to the disc brake rotor mount vs. the wheel spoke. This means the sensor will be more durable and read with more accuracy over time. It won’t imbalance the wheel or make one spoke loose over time… it’s a great little upgrade
  • With the compact motor and internally mounted Bosch Powertube battery pack, this ebike is fairly stealthy. It doesn’t stand out, the cables are mostly internally routed and the ebike system weight is kept low and center for better handling
  • The Bosch Purion display panel is compact and intuitive, but it still provides dynamic range readouts, which can help reduce range anxiety on longer bike rides. Just hold the – key to cycle from trip distance, total distance, assist level, and then range. I like how small the Bosch Purion is, and how simple it is to use with power, +, -, and walk mode on the base. This display leaves plenty of room on the handlebars to mount your phone or use one of Trek’s Blendr stem mounts for additional lights, cycle computers, Garmin devices, or your smartphone
  • All of the Gen 4 Bosch Performance Line motors now offer 120+ RPM pedal support, meaning that the motor can keep up with greater than 120 pedal strokes per minute, so you won’t be left without power when downshifting and spinning approaching a steep hill
  • I love the 9-speed drivetrain setup here, with a wide 11-36 tooth spread and reliable Shimano Alivio derailleur. Notice the custom aluminum alloy derailleur guard that Trek has designed! This will reduce damage from sticks, rocks, and bike tips
  • The steel chainring is designed with a narrow-wide tooth pattern that locks the chain more securely to prevent drops. To protect the chain and keep your pants clean, they’ve added an aluminum alloy guard to the outside of the chainring and the’ve added a clear plastic slap guard to the right chainstay to keep the paint looking nice
  • Trek chose one of my favorite trigger shifter setups for this bike, the high shifter paddle can be pushed or pulled so you can use your index finger or thumb, and the low shifter paddle can be pressed through three gears to “dump” a bunch of gears going into a big climb
  • Since the Bosch motor controller offers shift detection, the drivetrain should hold up longer between tuneups, and your chain and sprockets won’t wear as much. It’s not a perfect system, you can still mash gears, but shift detection certainly helps… I usually ease off when shifting gears, to reduce drivetrain pressure
  • Only the high-step frame is compatible with the optional Bosch Range Boost second battery pack, if you get the step-thru, you’ll be limited to 500 watt hours with the internal Bosch PowerTube battery
  • Only the high-step frame has two bottle cage bosses, the step-thru only has one… but the positioning is very good, near the head tube on the top tube which means it won’t get in the way as you stand over the frame
  • Despite being lighter and more compact than the third generation of Bosch Motors, the 4th generation still produces noticeable sound during operation. This is especially true in higher levels of assist and at higher pedal cadence rates
  • The Bosch Performance Line motors have a larger q-factor than competing mid-drive units from Shimano, Yamaha, and Brose. The width is 175mm and that spaces the crank arms out a bit further… not that big of a deal, but worth mentioning because a standard analog bicycle q-factor is 145mm to 157mm on road, city, and gravel bikes
  • Part of me really likes the Trek designed Removable Integrated Battery RIB casing design because of the built-in handle and right-side removability from the frame, but I dislike that it adds roughly 1.3lbs to the battery, that the shield is color-matched to the bike (making it less attractive to swap between other Trek models if you own multiple bikes), that the locking core is positioned on the left side of the frame vs. the right, and that the key must be used to mount the battery vs. simply pushing hard on the case to click it into the frame
  • Neither wheel is setup with quick release, you’ll need a 5mm and 6mm hex key wrench to get both wheels off. You could always swap the hardware for quick release, and benefits include increased security and decreased weight… but it’s less convenient for trail maintenance and requires two tools on hand vs. just one size hex key
  • The Bosch Purion display panel is compact and provides plenty of space for accessories, but it isn’t removable, and doesn’t show power output, avg speed, max speed, trip time, clock or shift recommendation. It also uses a 5-bar battery infographic representing 20% steps vs. 10 bars or an actual percentage readout for more precision… at least it does show a dynamic range estimate
  • Given the high capacity battery pack (and optional second pack for the high-step frame), it would be nice to have a USB port to plug a phone in for use with GPS, music, or other portable electronics… the Bosch Purion display panel has a Micro USB port, but this is only usable for data transfer and updates, not charging. Consider swapping the display for a Bosch Intuvia , Kiox , or the COBI Smartphone Hub system which do have active Micro USB charging ports, dealers can help with this for a hardware and service fee
  • The location of the battery charging port is very low on the left side of the seat tube, pretty close to the left crank arm. When plugged in, the charging cable actually blocks the rotation path of the left crank, so be careful not to bump the pedals, or consider charging the battery off the bike. It would be easier and safer to have the charging port up high on the right side of the bike
  • This is a minor thing, but the chainring doesn’t cycle backwards when you backpedal, this changes how drivetrain service is done… you basically need a bike maintenance stand or a friend to lift the bike and pedal to clean and lubricate the chain (absolutely make sure the bike is powered off when doing this!). One positive note here, is that Bosch has setup the bottom bracket with some resistance so the cranks won’t spin as freely backwards, which could lead to more shin scrapes and shin bumps otherwise
  • As with any premium electric bike with name brand components and a leading drive system that is custom-integrated into the frame, this ebike costs more money, but at least it is sold through a vast network dealers who can offer support and comes with a great 2+ year comprehensive warranty
  • The bike only comes in one color, Glossy Nautical Navy, which looks professional and is gender neutral, but this is an expensive bike and some people might want a more visible white or silver frame. At least the accent colors are bright, the tires have reflective stripes, and the bike comes with two bright lights that are visible from many angles

Court I understand you cannot use a Bosch powerpack 500 as the 2nd battery. That is a shame since I already own a few. Which bike do you personally prefer at their respective price points, The Allant + 7 or the Verve 3+ ?

Hi Stephen! I think that you CAN use the PowerPack 500 as the second battery pack, as long as you buy the mount from Trek. I’m not 100% sure if they sell it independently or include the battery. The only bike that is not compatible with the PowerPack 500 Range Boost is the step-thru version of the Allant+ 7 :) I personally do like the Verve models, but the suspension on the Allant+ 7 wins me over for sure, it’s more comfortable and with my sensitive back and neck, it’s something I’d happily pay for.

I was informed by Trek That a Quill Stem with Adjustable Riser is an available part for $29.99 . Works with All the Alliant Models : Comes in 85 mm and 105 mm lengths and is listed here .

Awesome! That’s a good find, thanks Rick. My experience with adjustable angle stems is that they can get a little loose over time if you ride off-road. Keep an eye on the bolts, tighten it occasionally if you feel play, and I hope it works great for you!

Great review as always Court! I’m trading in my Bulls Urban Evo for the S version of this in the states. So Speed-Pedelec that is available in Silver. Only thing I dislike is the Purion display. I want to upgrade to the Bosch Kiox if possible. Court, do you know if that can be an upgrade made on this bike? Thanks!

Hi Ryan, that’s awesome! I’d love to hear your thoughts once the bike arrives and you get some time in the saddle. Did you enjoy your BULLS Urban EVO? I liked that one too. Anyway, yeah! I do think it’s possible to swap Purion to Kiox, you just need a shop that will order and install it for you (and possibly update the software so it’s all current). The only issues I see is if Bosch is currently unwilling to sell a Kiox on its own due to supply limitations or marketing purposes ie. encouraging price tiering with bikes that use Kiox vs. Purion. I’d love to hear what you come up with. You could call Propel Bikes in Long Beach or Brooklyn to ask, if you don’t have a local/willing Bosch dealer.

I did like the Urban Evo. Have had it for couple years. Part of reason I’m trading in is due to lack of Bulls dealers and service here in Iowa though. Trek is big here and our biggest dealer is Trek specific. I went with the Urban Evo back then after watching your review and wanting a speed pedelec but Trek (only brand ever rode) didn’t have any back then. The Allant+ 7S has a lot of same specs as my Bulls plus I can get the double battery with the Trek and the full service with our dealer. I CAN get the Kiox head unit but just not in stock currently but not a big deal right now.

I did look at a newer Bulls bike you reviewed but with lack of dealers (only 1 in Iowa) and price nearly $1,000 more than the Trek I decided against it and go back to Trek.

Am I reading this right that the two axles require different size hex keys? What is that all about?

Yep, that surprised me as well. Not sure why they didn’t try to match them. There are a lot of little details to consider when building an ebike, and often times, a front and rear axle may be longer, thicker, quick release or not… so I can see how the bolt would be slightly different. This may come from sourcing standardized parts at a cheaper rate vs. making their own axles that match perfectly. It’s a small detail that most wouldn’t notice, I’m glad you caught that and brought it up, Doug ;)

Hi Court, thank you for a great YouTube channel and website! I’m looking for a bike for pavement and light trail duty. This Trek seems to fit the bill, but when I look at your “best bike” list, the OHM Quest is by implication a potentially better option. All things considered, would you say the OHM is still a better choice? I’m 68 yrs old, 6′ tall, 175 lbs and looking for a ride that’s easy on the wrists, and light as possible in a less than $4K price range.

Hi Mark! Great question… these two ebikes are very comparable. What you get from Trek with the Allant+ series is more dealers who can let you test ride, help you get fitted, and provide post-purchase support. I reviewed OHM earlier in the year, and they got the spot… maybe it’s time to look over things again closely. All ebikes have their trade-offs. I really like the CX motor on the Allant+, but it is louder than the Quest. Both have the beautiful in-downtube battery integration, and both have great headlight positioning (though I prefer the slightly higher OHM for safety and being seen by cars). Trek has the second battery option on some frames, and I prefer their compact Bosch charger… but the stand-over height is taller for the high-step. In short, these are very competitive products that both deserve a high ranking. It’s difficult to pick just one ebike, and I thought OHM did an outstanding job with their product, so that’s why they are number one right now. Thanks for the thoughtful and detailed response to my original question. I decided to buy the Trek for quick availability and local co/dealer considerations. I was disappointed with the initial dealer set up but after a pointed discussion he made things right. Overall I am happy with the bike. It’s a comfortable and smooth bike. I am surprised how easy it is to ride without any motor boost given the relatively large tire width and weight. I find the motor to be really noisy, even at the Eco setting with a slow cadence. My wife has a Priority Embark which is virtually silent by comparison. My other nit pick, as you have mentioned in other reviews, is the Trek-disabled features on the Purion controller. It’s interesting Trek provides a pile of manuals but I haven’t found any mention of the disabled light switch and walk functions.

Question, really. You mention the shift sensing feature, but in the Trek ad it shows as optional. How can I tell if I have it? Is it a hardware or software issue? Also, if I set the gears down a couple of notches for a hill, if I don’t do it early enough the bike wants to stop. I actually fell over once due to this. What’s a good technique for starting when on an uphill slope?

Hi Ralph! The shift detection feature is controlled by software, and included automatically with all Gen 2, 3, and 4 generation motors that are not configured for internally geared hubs or CVT hubs. Since the Trek Allant+ 7 has a cassette + derailleur, the Bosch motor will automatically perform shift detection. It’s not a perfect system however, they didn’t want it to cut motor power completely… just ease off a bit. This makes it high performance (more natural feeling) while still achieving some level of hardware protection. It’s something that you might not even notice unless you compared it to other ebike mid-drive motors from Shimano, Yamaha, Brose, or MAHLE.

As for your second question, yes… it’s important to shift down to lower gears well before the bike has moved onto an incline. If you wait until the last moment and try to switch quickly, you will strain the derailleur and mash the gears (possibly bending the teeth on the cassette sprockets). Sometimes riders who are new, or just distracted by talking to friends or looking out for cars, will forget to shift until they feel the difficulty increasing, which means that they are already well into an incline and momentum is slowing. In these cases, it’s best to get off the bike and walk it up the hill vs. trying to shift. More experienced or powerful riders can stand up and take a couple of hard pedal strokes, then shift down gears as the bike coasts and they release pedal pressure. This is what I do when mountain biking if I’ve miscalculated a climb… but it takes a lot of balance and requires more work. Please be careful not to tip over, just stop and then put a foot down if you’re struggling. Shift before climbs, keep your view farther out so you know what’s coming up… I hope this helps :)

just had a very scary ride. Going downhill about 20 mph, touched the brakes and the bike started to shimmy violently. I thought I would crash, but fortunately was able to stop safely. I had set the shock preload on my Allant 7+ to minimum, thinking I would get a smoother ride. Could this have caused such a violent shimmy? At the shop I took it to, the manager reset the preload and rode it with no problem. They think I’m crazy, but it was definitely shimmying badly. Any ideas? I’m afraid to ride it now as I am 81 and don’t need a fall. Thanks

Hey Ralph, glad to hear you were able to stop safely – that sounds like a scary experience! I had a similar experience while riding a different bike, the problem was that the quick-release for my front wheel was not tightened up enough, so activating the brake would cause the wheel to tilt sideways a bit. I believe that the Allant+ 7 does not have quick-release though, so that’s unlikely the cause in this case. You might try posting on the EBR Trek Forum to see if any other Trek riders can help!

I had a scary experience on my Trek Allant 7+ recently. I was going down a hill about 20mph and nearing the bottom starting around an easy curve the front wheel started shimmying violently. I really thought I would crash, but I was able to brake to a stop without falling. I wonder if anyone else has had this happen and what might have caused it. I took it to the shop and they said there were no mechanical problems. I had loosened the shock pre-load, thinking I would get a smoother ride. However, both the shop mechs and Trek support said that shouldn’t have caused my problem. I noticed that the first thing the shop guy did before riding it was to tighten that pre-load. I have ridden about 15 miles on it since then with the pre-load in mid range and it feels fine now. Any thoughts about this? I’m still a little nervous going fast downhill, but I have had it up to 30 mph with no problem.

Hi Ralph! I wonder if you were experiencing “speed wobble” which happens if the weight of the rider and cargo is towards the back and the fork is a bit slack. I’ve experienced this while riding some step-thru models that had flexy frames, and this could be similar to your loosened preload setting (creating some play and flex in the fork). I’m glad it hasn’t happened again. It sounds like you’re doing a good job by riding slower, tightening preload a bit, and keeping your hands on the handlebars ;)

The dinger on my bell would not ring as it was touching the bell, so I shorten the dinger with sand paper and working good now. Do not remove too much.

Is the battery charger for the Allant 7S compatible with both 110v and 220v power supplies?

Hi Paul, Bosch makes several chargers and I’m not super comfortable making a statement here about this because I don’t want it to break. This would be a good question for the Bosch forums and maybe your local shop :)

Love this bike but after 1,700 km I’m having to replace the cassette and chain due to 9th gear slipping. It’s annoying as I paid so much for this bike just 8 months ago and I haven’t ridden in the last three months, so 5 months of good hard use. Maybe that’s the new normal with bikes.

Hey Danny, that is a bummer… I think mid-drive electric bikes put more strain and wear into the chain, derailleur, and cassette cogs. We’re looking at an Alivio derailleur here, which is three steps up from base in the Shimano groupset. I hope it holds up decently for you in the future, but yeah… I’ve noticed that the added torque of the motor and possibly added weight of the battery motor etc. on ebikes causes additional wear. At least the Bosch motor has a bit of shift detection built in to reduce strain! How much is the replacement-tuneup going to cost you? Maybe the shop will have some tips for reduced wear in the future, or maybe it wasn’t perfectly tuned when you got it brand new? I always try to ease off on pedal pressure when shifting on mid-drives. For reference, I’ve had to take my non electric mountain bike in several times for tuneups and I’ve also experienced some phantom shifting there just due to use.

Trek’s Removable Integrated Battery (RIB) makes it impractical to remove the battery when transporting the bike. Since the battery and cover are a single unit, when the battery is removed, the battery compartment is exposed to the elements. This is not ideal when transporting the bike on back of a vehicle. One possible solution would be for Trek to offer a cover for the battery compartment.

That’s a really good point, Ron. As much as I like Trek as a company, and as much as I see how the RIB is meant to make batteries easy to remove and carry… they introduce weight, color matching, and transportation issues as you brought up. I hope they consider the cover accessory idea you’ve shared, or refine their design to improve utility with future builds :)

Our Review: Trek Allant+ 8

The Trek Allant+ 8 E-Bike

Let’s start with a couple caveats about the Trek Allant+ 8: it’s purpose is for everyday street riding and not much else, and it comes with a hefty price tag.

Having said that, Trek has a history of building quality mountain bikes (one of which is sitting in my garage right now), and the Allant+ 8 is a top-quality commuter bike if that is what you are looking for.  If all you are looking for is an E-powered bike to get around town with and aren’t planning on hitting the trails with it, this is the right bike.

Some Features

Utilizing the COBI.Bike app, your smartphone becomes the computer to feed you information about your speed, how far you’ve traveled, what your altitude is, the weather, and much more. You can also start the bike right from the app.  And no need to worry about killing your phone battery – the case charges the phone while you bike around town.

Depending on how fast you are riding, how large you are, and how much pedaling your are providing, the range of the bike can be anywhere from about 64kms (40 miles) to 200kms (124 miles).  Bosch, the company that provides the pedal-assist system, has an online calculator to help you figure out your possible range.

Hidden within the frame itself, this bike’s removable battery doesn’t take away from the aesthetics of the bike.  He also has a handle for carrying and is removeable without any extra tools, and can be charged either on the bike or off.

Our Thoughts

This is a smooth riding bike, both the ride itself and the feel of the bike when the drive train is in use including during gear changes and rides uphill.  The motor packs a powerful punch for an e-bike, with excellent torque and sensitivity.

If you are into much longer rides, we do recommend getting a second battery and keeping it with you. One battery, depending on how much effort you put in yourself with pedaling and how many hills you climb, will be good for the average user around town, but if you’re on a distance ride or expecting high winds to slow you down, get that extra battery.

We couldn’t help ourselves and had to try The Allant+ 8 off-road.  On a compact, light trail it did quite well, but I’ll say that you should avoid using it on anything more than that or a little bit of gravel. 

Though this bike is slightly on the heavy side, this is to be expected in an e-bike, and you should have no plans to be anywhere where you need to carry your bike over rough terrain anyway. 

Don’t expect to get your favorite color with the Allant+ 8 – at the time of writing, the only color to choose from was “matte metallic gunmetal,” which sounds pretty boring until you actually see the bike, but it definitely doesn’t shock you with pizzaz. 

Final Thoughts

If you are a big-time commuter with a lot of plans to use this instead of a vehicle for your day-to-day travels around town, you want to consider the Trek Allant+ 8 as a solid option for your choice of e-bike.  However, if the price tag is above your budget (which at $3,999 it certainly could be) or you are looking for something that can be both a commuter and an off-road companion, this may not be the bike for you.

A friend of the family recently purchased the new Trek Allant+ 7 and has kindly lent me their bike to test and review. My first impressions were one of an incredibly well-built e-bike, with excellent components and the very latest 4th generation Bosch CX Performance Line motor. The Trek isn’t particularly cheap at just over £3000, but my friend wanted a bike that was going to last her several years, so quality was an important factor in deciding the purchase.

Trek Bikes are one of the most prestigious and well-known global bike brands and they have fully embraced the e-bike revolution by investing millions in R&D over the last few years. They now sell electric bikes that cover every discipline from road bikes, to full-suspension mountain bikes.

The Allant+ 7 is a very high-quality step-through e-bike aimed primarily at commuters and leisure riders. The focus is on practicality, comfort, performance and battery range and I think they’ve succeeded on every level. Read on for more detailed information on the components.

Electric components

When it comes to electric components, having a good motor and battery at the heart of your e-bike is of paramount importance. Trek has wisely chosen the excellent 4th generation Bosch Performance Line CX for the Allant+ 7. This is the best motor Bosch currently offers and is designed to cope with the rigours of mountain biking.

This motor never fails to impress me with its versatility and performance. Ride it in the lowest assist setting and it provides the rider with a useful boost that is seamlessly delivered via a high-tech torque and cadence sensor combined with a sophisticated firmware algorithm that constantly monitors rider input.  This translates to a very natural pedalling feel that makes the rider feel like they have developed very strong legs overnight. In turbo mode, the amount of assistance on offer from the 250w motor is nothing short of remarkable. This is down to the high torque output of 85Nm combined with the motor’s peak power which will (briefly) hit nearly 500w.

What I love about the Bosch and other similar crank-drive motors is the more you put in the more the motor gives. There is a direct correlation between your pedalling effort and the power delivery which makes you, the rider feel like you have bionic legs!

Bosch Purion Display

The Purion display is at the budget end of Bosch’s current line of displays and has been used on many e-bikes over the last few years. There is an emphasis on simplicity and user-friendliness, and the display offers the rider all the important information including speed, battery range, trip computer and assist level.

It doesn’t have the same functionality as Intuvia or the high-tech appearance of the new Kiox, but it’s discreet and gives the rider access to all the important data in an easy-to-read format.

Bosch Powertube 500Wh battery

Range anxiety is a thing of the past with the latest generation of Bosch power tube batteries. Combined with the increased efficiency of the motor it is quite possible to achieve a range of nearly 100 miles if ridden on gently undulating terrain in ‘Eco’ mode. I would say for the average rider, using a combination of all the assist modes a range of around 60-70 miles is realistic. Although there are lots of considerations like rider weight, tyre pressures, wind direction, terrain and outside temperature.

Bosch has a really useful range calculator tool which will give you an approximate battery range based on your motor, bike weight, your weight and the terrain ridden on.

Bike components

As a premium brand, Trek always uses quality Shimano or SRAM components on their e-bikes. The Allant+ 7 uses the latest incarnation of Shimano’s MTB-specific Alivio groupset which is fairly entry-level in the world of mountain biking but is perfectly suitable for a step-through hybrid bike. Stopping power is provided by Shimano hydraulic brakes and all the wheels and finishing kits are excellent quality Bontrager, which is Trek’s in-house component brand.

The Shimano Alivio M3100 Shadow 9-speed rear derailleur is dependable and fully suited to a bike like the Allant+ 7. It offers a good spread of gears with an 11-36 rear cassette and 40t front chainring. I have used Alivio derailleurs on my touring bikes and covered thousands of trouble-free miles. This derailleur will also handle an 11-40 9-speed Sunrace rear cassette if you wanted to lower the gear further. Shifting is crisp and precise and the drivetrain is finished off with an e-bike-specific chain.

The Shimano BR-MT200 hydraulic brakes are more than up to the job of stopping any rider quickly on steep descents. After the initial bedding-in period braking performance improves drastically and the brakes provide decent modulation and assured stopping power. Although the MT-200 is an entry-level hydraulic braking system, it is going to be more than enough for the average hybrid rider.

Wheels and Tyres

Trek have used their quality in-house Bontrager brand of hubs with Alex MD35, tubeless ready rims and has sensibly gone for the 650b (27.5″) wheel size option. The front and rear wheels also use thru-axles for increased rigidity and sealed hub bearings for longevity and low maintenance.  The tyres are excellent high-volume Schwalbe G-One 650 x 57c gravel tyres. The tyres not only help soak up road bumps but enable the rider to tackle a multitude of terrains with confidence. The G-One is designed to be ridden on tarmac, gravel tracks and forest trails.

The SR Suntour Mobie25 front suspension forks are designed specifically with hybrid bikes in mind and they have all the features you would usually expect to see on an MTB fork including preload and rebound adjustment with a lockout feature (to prevent ‘bobbing’ when riding on tarmac). There is a useful 50mm of travel which is perfect for riding poorly surfaced country lanes and light off-road use.

Frame and finishing kit

A lightweight hydroformed alloy frame is finished in a hard-wearing gloss paint finish. The frame geometry is designed primarily with rider comfort in mind, placing the handlebars at more of a shoulder height, meaning the rider is set to bolt upright. There is also an adjustable handlebar stem so the rider can adjust this to suit their needs. The step-through frame design makes the Allant+ 7 perfect for riders who prefer a low standover height or may have difficulty riding a regular frame. There is a traditional-framed Allant+ 7 available as well.

All of the finishing kits are Trek’s Bontrager alloy components, and the accessories included are impressive. There is a Racktime Lightit pannier rack, Pletscher Comp Flex 18 direct-mount kickstand, Hermans MR8 headlight with AXA Blueline tail light and finally full mudguards –  the Trek Allant+ 7 has everything you need to start your e-bike adventures straight away.

Who is the Trek Allant+ 7 Lowstep aimed at?

The Trek Allant+ 7 Lowstep is one of those electric bikes that will have a very broad appeal. You could easily ditch the car and forget the traffic on your daily commute, and with a battery range like this has to offer, you could comfortably do a 40-mile round commute in ‘turbo’ mode and not worry about turning up for work tired and sweating.

If you are looking to improve your fitness and want to explore your local countryside more, the Allant+ is perfect for weekend adventures. I would go as far as to say that you could even use the Trek for a spot of touring. With the potential to cover up to 100 miles on a single charge, you could cover lots of distance and charge up on your overnight stops.

My friend is delighted with her purchase, and having ridden the Trek myself I’m impressed with what it has to offer.  My friend is in her 70s and Cornwall is incredibly hilly (as anyone who has cycled there will tell you), having an e-bike like the Trek is a game-changer and is giving my friend the freedom to explore the beautiful Cornish countryside without having to worry about pushing her bike up the steep hills we have here.

The Bosch Performance Line CX motor is an amazing piece of technology, it’s smooth, quiet, and efficient but most importantly it provides an incredible boost to your pedalling. I’ve tried the Allant+ 7 on hills with an average gradient of 15% (in turbo mode) and it flies up there – you still need to pedal, but the motor makes these hills feel like a gentle slope.

Comfort is a big deciding factor for a lot of people when buying an e-bike and the Trek is very well catered for in this department. The high-volume tyres combined with front suspension and an upright riding position make for a very comfortable, leisurely riding experience.

Equipment is also an important consideration. The Allant+ 7 has everything you could need – rack, mudguards, lights and kickstand. It is a versatile bike and is suitable for riding on unpaved cycleways, country lanes, and byways anywhere you want to take your weekend adventures!

Importantly the Trek looks and feels tough. All the components are of good quality and this translates into a very reasonable weight for an e-bike of this kind. Most low-step electric bikes seem to weigh in the region of around 25kg, but the Trek only weighs 21kg which is a 4kg weight saving. Bosch has also designed this latest motor in such a way that you can pedal it normally with the assist switched off, so even if you do run out of power you can still ride it as a regular bike (albeit a heavy one).

All in all, I’m impressed with the Trek Allant+ 7, it’s not the cheapest e-bike available but it is excellent quality and uses the best motor Bosch currently produces. If your budget stretches to £3000 and you’re looking for a step-through e-bike, the Trek is worth a look.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
