skidmore college admissions visit

Skidmore College is a private institution that was founded in 1903. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 2,758 (fall 2022), and the campus size is 890 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. Skidmore College's ranking in the 2024 edition of Best Colleges is National Liberal Arts Colleges, #38. Its tuition and fees are $64,880.

Freshmen are immediately integrated into school culture at Skidmore College. Through the First Year Experience Program, freshmen are paired up with peer mentors and placed in introductory Scribner Seminars. Freshmen must live on campus in dorms near other students in their seminar. About 40 adventurous freshman can spend the fall semester in London, part of the First Year Experience program that lets students kick off their college career across the Atlantic. Back at the school’s campus in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., there are close to 100 student clubs and organizations, but no Greek system. Students can eat in traditional dining halls or, if they’re especially ambitious, can cook their own meals in an on-campus kitchen.

There are about 50 majors at Skidmore, and students can design their own academic programs, too. All students, regardless of major, will take science and mathematics courses. Outside the classroom, the school sports teams are known as the Thoroughbreds and compete in the NCAA Division III Liberty League. For fun off campus, downtown Saratoga Springs is a mile away. Students can check out horse races at the Saratoga Race Course or tour the historic Saratoga Battlefield. The nearby Adirondack Mountains offer opportunities to ski, snowboard, mountain bike and white water raft, and, for a metropolitan experience, New York, Boston and Montreal are each about a three-hour drive away.

Students are encouraged to pair up with faculty members for research projects. Science projects take place in the school’s unique laboratory in the North Woods. The Skidmore student body is about 60 percent female. The curricula at Skidmore has produced notable alumni in the sciences, including Cynthia Carroll, former CEO of mining powerhouse Anglo American; and Laura Taylor, president and CEO of information security company Relevant Technologies.

Skidmore Requirements for Admission

Choose your test.

What are Skidmore's admission requirements? While there are a lot of pieces that go into a college application, you should focus on only a few critical things:

  • GPA requirements
  • Testing requirements, including SAT and ACT requirements
  • Application requirements

In this guide we'll cover what you need to get into Skidmore and build a strong application.

School location: Saratoga Springs, NY

This school is also known as: Skidmore College

Admissions Rate: 25.5%

If you want to get in, the first thing to look at is the acceptance rate. This tells you how competitive the school is and how serious their requirements are.

The acceptance rate at Skidmore is 25.5% . For every 100 applicants, 26 are admitted.

image description

This means the school is very selective . If you meet Skidmore's requirements for GPA, SAT/ACT scores, and other components of the application, you have a great shot at getting in. But if you fall short on GPA or your SAT/ACT scores, you'll have a very low chance of being admitted, even if you meet the other admissions requirements.

Skidmore GPA Requirements

Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school's average GPA for its current students.

Average GPA: 3.87

The average GPA at Skidmore is 3.87 .

image description

(Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA. This school did not officially report its average GPA, but we've estimated it here using data from over 1,000 schools.)

With a GPA of 3.87, Skidmore requires you to be near the top of your class , and well above average. Your transcript should show mostly A's. Ideally, you will also have taken several AP or IB classes to show that you can handle academics at a college level.

If you're currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 3.87, you'll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate . This will help you compete effectively against other applicants who have higher GPAs than you.

SAT and ACT Requirements

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Only a few schools require the SAT or ACT, but many consider your scores if you choose to submit them.

Skidmore hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores (we'll cover this next), it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Otherwise, don't."

Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to Skidmore will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students. We therefore recommend that you consider taking the SAT or ACT, and doing well.

Skidmore SAT Requirements

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school's average score.

Average SAT: 1373

The average SAT score composite at Skidmore is a 1373 on the 1600 SAT scale.

This score makes Skidmore Moderately Competitive for SAT test scores.

image description

Skidmore SAT Score Analysis (New 1600 SAT)

The 25th percentile SAT score is 1320, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1440. In other words, a 1320 on the SAT places you below average, while a 1440 will move you up to above average .

Here's the breakdown of SAT scores by section:

SAT Score Choice Policy

The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.

Skidmore has the Score Choice policy of "Highest Section."

This is also known as "superscoring." This means that you can choose which SAT tests you want to send to the school. Of all the scores they receive, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all SAT test dates you submit .

Click below to learn more about how superscoring critically affects your test strategy.

For example, say you submit the following 3 test scores:

Even though the highest total you scored on any one test date was 1000, Skidmore will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. You can raise your composite score from 1000 to 1400 in this example.

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and Skidmore forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Your application readers will only see that one score.

Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1440, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it . You have a very good chance of raising your score, which will significantly boost your chances of getting in.

Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the SAT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on. This will give you the highest Superscore possible.

Skidmore ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, Skidmore likely doesn't have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

Average ACT: 31

The average ACT score at Skidmore is 31. This score makes Skidmore Strongly Competitive for ACT scores.

The 25th percentile ACT score is 30, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 33.

Even though Skidmore likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 30 or below, you'll have a very hard time getting in, unless you have something else very impressive in your application. There are so many applicants scoring 31 and above that a 30 will look academically weak.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you're taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 33 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you're happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

We weren't able to find the school's exact ACT policy, which most likely means that it does not Superscore. Regardless, you can choose your single best ACT score to send in to Skidmore, so you should prep until you reach our recommended target ACT score of 33.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Because of this, no school requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing section, but some schools do recommend certain students submit their results if they have them.

Skidmore considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. You don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.

Final Admissions Verdict

Because this school is very selective, strong academic scores are critical to improving your chances of admission . If you're able to score a 1440 SAT or a 33 ACT or above, you'll have a very strong chance at getting in.

For a school as selective as Skidmore, rounding out the rest of your application will also help. We'll cover those details next.

But if you apply with a score below a 1440 SAT or a 33 ACT, you unfortunately have a low chance of getting in. There are just too many other applicants with high SAT/ACT scores and strong applications, and you need to compete against them.

Notes from Skidmore visit

My son and I visited Skidmore this week. I though I would share what we learned. GENERAL INFO • All freshmen live in triples • Lots of upperclassmen live in apartment-style configurations • 90% of students live on campus all four years • Admissions rep said that “clubs are the crux of social life” – this was reinforced on the tour • No Greek organizations • Very active Outing Club • 15-20 minute walk to town • 3,500 on campus events per year

CURRICULUM • Beyond your major, you are required to take courses in eight areas, although some courses can cover two of the areas o Writing heavy course o Quantitative reasoning o Art o Natural science o Humanities o Social science o Foreign language o Justice and power • Freshmen take a first-year seminar taught by the person who is their pre-major academic advisor • Freshmen are also assigned an upperclassman peer advisor • Freshmen have the option of doing their first semester in London – up to 36 slots available for that – they take part in the same first-year seminar with a Skidmore professor/advisor

APPLYING • Admissions rep mentioned four areas that are most important to them 1) course rigor, 2) grades, 3) demonstrated interest and 4) recommendation letters • Roughly 45% of the class is filled through Early Decision • Regular decision acceptance rate was 37%; dodged the question of what the ED acceptance rate was • Skidmore does not require a supplemental essay in the Common App

FINANCIAL AID • Meets full need, mostly in grants, but students should expect to have a $2,500 loan per year • They offer some merit scholarships, but only for for science, math and music majors • Admission is not need blind, but while they said they consider need throughout the application review process, it sounded like it really comes into play when they are looking at the bottom of the acceptances. Said that more money was available up front.

Thank you for the very thorough recap. Good info in those info sessions!

Unfortunately “All freshmen live in triples” is a dealbreaker for us.

Hi! Some quick corrections-- regular decision admission rate is around 20%, and the early decision rate is above 50. Many first years are assigned to live in triples (not forced triples, rooms that were built to accommodate three), but most wind up in doubles by the end of the year. Male students are typically initially assigned to doubles, it’s rare to have male students ever living in triples.

The two merit scholarships, both offered for $15,000/year to multiple students don’t require students to have any particular major, but expect students to participate in the academic area for which the scholarship is awarded (music or STEM).

How do they determine “interest”? Number of campus visits? Contact with admissions reps, faculty, financial aid, other?

@nehiker - Some of the information you cite is incorrect. My son is a freshman. He lives in a double (which is large). The college’s own website lists this past year’s admissions stats - 47% admitted through the Early Decision process. Overall admission rate is around 30%. Last year saw the largest applicant pool at more than 11,000 applicants. And just to throw it out there to those reading this thread, my son LOVES Skidmore so far.

Interest can be demonstrated in the following ways: Visiting the campus for an “open house”, interviewing, and applying early decision. Some schools monitor whether a student opens the emails they send (digital tracking). Since one will never know which schools do this, it is imperative to open all emails from colleges. We visited Skidmore in the summer of 2017 for an “open house”, then returned to interview in August 2018 (and did an “arts tour”) that day, applied ED Round 1, and opened every email. Since Skidmore did not visit my son’s school, attending that session was not an option, but if they had visited he would have attended that as well.

I’ve read other threads that talk about the different “types” of students at Skidmore. Some have noted that the school is rather clique-y and that the artsy and sporty students don’t mix, that students do not move freely between the various groups. Can anyone speak to that?

Assigned a double room as a freshman. Many friends did as well!

I will also add my two cents that not all freshmen have triples. Not even close. @nehiker should amend their post.

My daughter is currently a Skidmore junior, and had a beautiful, large double as a freshman, before moving to a single as a sophomore, and is now in the on campus apartments as a junior. The real fact is that living arrangements are one of Skidmore’s many strengths. I mean… what other college can offer a sophomore a single? Even the freshmen who are assigned triples during their fall semester, often are moved to doubles during spring semester, if they so choose. Exact percentage of freshmen who may start out in triples will obviously vary, depending on incoming class size, but during my daughters freshmen year, it was less than 50%.

@tbb123 , Regarding inter-mingling of different types of students, my daughter plays a sport, but is also involved in what might be considered ‘artsy’ activities. She says that one of the best things about Skidmore is how well ALL students get along, and support eachother. It’s a very open minded, “do your own thing” type of school community, with little, if any judgemental attitude between groups.

Finally, @astonmartin18 gives great advise as to the many ways that a prospective student can show interest, and he/she is correct as to how important that is. I will add to those excellent sugestions, that while visiting campus consider setting up an interview with a Professor within the students expected area of study. My daughter did this, and not only are we sure that it helped her application stand out with the admissions team, it also helped her decide that Skidmore was definitely the right school for her. As a result, she happily applied ED, with it’s substantially higher acceptance rates.

A month into my daughters third year at Skidmore, my daughter, and my wife and I could not be happier about our daughters choice.

My D is currently a Jr, but she was in a double as a freshman and had a single last year. I’d give admissions a call before crossing them off the list over a possible non-issue.

All Freshmen do NOT live in Triples. I just visited a friend who is a Freshman and he lives in a double in a Freshman Tower Dorm. two roomates on each side of close dores, connected in the middle via a shared bath for the 4 of them.

If you review Skidmore College’s Common Data Set 2018-2019 (a 35 page document with tons of data) which can be found on their website, last year Skidmore had a Regular Decision Admit Rate of 27%. The Early Decision Admit Rate was 63%

May I chime in about the triple? For what it’s worth, remain open about the option. One of my greatest concerns about my son’s freshman dorm experience at a different school was that he would end up in a triple. It came true - a built up triple which is a room meant for two. It was tight but his two random roommates were great guys! The three got along well and although my son is not living with them this year, he is still friends with them. He also learned to be more flexible living in a triple.

Skidmore College

See what students say:

Just 30 miles north of Albany lies Skidmore College, a small liberal arts school that is home to around 2,500 students. Skidmore thrives on combining academics with creative expression, and the school works to cultivate students who want to explore ideas across traditional disciplinary boundaries. “The pursuit of knowledge is valued here,” says a student, so “you won’t be barred from an academic department just because you aren’t enrolled in it.” Another student states that the school is “excellent when it comes to every path or field of study,” and “you can pursue everything you are interested in.” This all happens in classrooms run by “very helpful, understanding, motivating,” and “understanding faculty who know that we are human beings before we are students.” Students also enjoy “small class sizes [that] allow for the formation of impactful and lasting relationships.” Furthermore, “all teachers are accessible outside the classroom,” which helps teaching extend beyond the traditional four walls. Other examples of this include “environmental studies [classes that] take place in the North Woods” and an artist interview class “in which each student chooses an artist they admire and [interview] that artist.” One student sums up the Skidmore academic experience by saying, “Learning feels important and productive toward society.”

Student Body

This is an “active and involved” student body, with the average Skidmore student having “at least a major and a minor [and getting] involved in multiple clubs, [while] probably working more than one job as well.” One member of this “well-rounded and over accomplished” group says, “Skidmore is the school for students who want to do it all.” Plus, it’s a place where everyone is “super welcoming and friendly” with a student body that “puts the ‘liberal’ in liberal arts.” That’s all representative of the “drive for creativity” on campus and the fact that students “support creativity in one another.” As one student jokes, “there are more shades of hair here (mostly unnatural) than there are people.” But despite any differences, everyone at Skidmore “has ‘their people’ and is welcome in many other circles and friend groups as well.”

Campus Life

People “are constantly on the go at Skidmore,” but this “doesn’t mean that students…don’t take care of themselves.” A typical day involves “going to classes, eating meals with friends,…meeting for a group project, studying in the library, maybe [taking] a nap, and getting outdoors.” The outdoorsy crowd finds great joy with the Adirondack Mountains and Lake George being just about an hour away. Those looking to stay a little closer to campus also have options: Saratoga Springs, which some call “an amazing town” to be near, is just a ten-minute walk from campus. And Boston, New York City, and Montreal are just a few hours away as well. Regardless of whether they’re spent on campus or off, days are “always full of activity and connection,” and there are more than 100 student clubs and organizations, making it “easy to integrate and be part of the community.” Those clubs “host tons of lectures and events for students,” and “the arts are a huge strength at Skidmore.” Anywhere you look, “students are constantly collaborating and playing shows,” and there is “a good culture of attending events on campus and supporting the student body.”

A crossroads for computing at MIT

On Vassar Street, in the heart of MIT’s campus, the MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing recently opened the doors to its new headquarters in Building 45. The building’s central location and welcoming design will help form a new cluster of connectivity at MIT and enable the space to have a multifaceted role.

“The college has a broad mandate for computing across MIT,” says Daniel Huttenlocher, dean of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing and the Henry Ellis Warren Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. “The building is designed to be the computing crossroads of the campus. It’s a place to bring a mix of people together to connect, engage, and catalyze collaborations in computing, and a home to a related set of computing research groups from multiple departments and labs.”

“Computing is the defining technology of our time and it will continue to be, well into the future,” says MIT President Sally Kornbluth. “As the people of MIT make progress in high-impact fields from AI to climate, this fantastic new building will enable collaboration across computing, engineering, biological science, economics, and countless other fields, encouraging the cross-pollination of ideas that inspires us to generate fresh solutions. The college has opened its doors at just the right time.”

A physical embodiment

An approximately 178,000 square foot eight-floor structure, the building is designed to be a physical embodiment of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing’s three-fold mission: strengthen core computer science and artificial intelligence; infuse the forefront of computing with disciplines across MIT; and advance social, ethical, and policy dimensions of computing.

Oriented for the campus community and the public to come in and engage with the college, the first two floors of the building encompass multiple convening areas, including a 60-seat classroom, a 250-seat lecture hall, and an assortment of spaces for studying and social interactions.

Academic activity has commenced in both the lecture hall and classroom this semester with 13 classes for undergraduate and graduate students. Subjects include 6.C35/6.C85 (Interactive Data Visualization and Society), a class taught by faculty from the departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and Urban Studies and Planning. The class was created as part of the Common Ground for Computing Education , a cross-cutting initiative of the college that brings multiple departments together to develop and teach new courses and launch new programs that blend computing with other disciplines.

“The new college building is catering not only to educational and research needs, but also fostering extensive community connections. It has been particularly exciting to see faculty teaching classes in the building and the lobby bustling with students on any given day, engrossed in their studies or just enjoying the space while taking a break,” says Asu Ozdaglar, deputy dean of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing and head of EECS.

The building will also accommodate 50 computing research groups, which correspond to the number of new faculty the college is hiring — 25 in core computing positions and 25 in shared positions with departments at MIT. These groups bring together a mix of new and existing teams in related research areas spanning floors four through seven of the building.

In mid-January, the initial two dozen research groups moved into the building, including faculty from the departments of EECS; Aeronautics and Astronautics; Brain and Cognitive Sciences; Mechanical Engineering; and Economics who are affiliated with the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems. The research groups form a coherent overall cluster in deep learning and generative AI, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, reinforcement learning, game theoretic methods, and societal impact of AI.

More will follow suit, including some of the 10 faculty who have been hired into shared positions by the college with the departments of Brain and Cognitive Sciences; Chemical Engineering; Comparative Media Studies and Writing; Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences; Music and Theater Arts; Mechanical Engineering; Nuclear Science and Engineering; Political Science; and the MIT Sloan School of Management.

“I eagerly anticipate the building's expansion of opportunities, facilitating the development of even deeper connections the college has made so far spanning all five schools," says Anantha Chandrakasan, chief innovation and strategy officer, dean of the School of Engineering, and the Vannevar Bush Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Other college programs and activities that are being supported in the building include the MIT Quest for Intelligence, Center for Computational Science and Engineering, and MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab. There are also dedicated areas for the dean’s office, as well as for the cross-cutting areas of the college — the Social and Ethical Responsibilities of Computing , Common Ground, and Special Semester Topics in Computing, a new experimental program designed to bring MIT researchers and visitors together in a common space for a semester around areas of interest.

Additional spaces include conference rooms on the third floor that are available for use by any college unit. These rooms are accessible to both residents and nonresidents of the building to host weekly group meetings or other computing-related activities.

For the MIT community at large, the building’s main event space, along with three conference rooms, is available for meetings, events, and conferences. Located eight stories high on the top floor with striking views across Cambridge and Boston and of the Great Dome, the event space is already in demand with bookings through next fall, and has quickly become a popular destination on campus.

The college inaugurated the event space over the January Independent Activities Period, welcoming students, faculty, and visitors to the building for Expanding Horizons in Computing — a weeklong series of bootcamps, workshops, short talks, panels, and roundtable discussions. Organized by various MIT faculty, the 12 sessions in the series delved into exciting areas of computing and AI, with topics ranging from security, intelligence, and deep learning to design, sustainability, and policy.

Form and function

Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the state-of-the-art space for education, research, and collaboration took shape over four years of design and construction.

“In the design of a new multifunctional building like this, I view my job as the dean being to make sure that the building fulfills the functional needs of the college mission,” says Huttenlocher. “I think what has been most rewarding for me, now that the building is finished, is to see its form supporting its wide range of intended functions.”

In keeping with MIT’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the building is designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. The final review with the U.S. Green Building Council is tracking toward a Platinum certification.

The glass shingles on the building’s south-facing side serve a dual purpose in that they allow abundant natural light in and form a double-skin façade constructed of interlocking units that create a deep sealed cavity, which is anticipated to notably lower energy consumption.

Other sustainability features include embodied carbon tracking, on-site stormwater management, fixtures that reduce indoor potable water usage, and a large green roof. The building is also the first to utilize heat from a newly completed utilities plant built on top of Building 42, which converted conventional steam-based distributed systems into more efficient hot-water systems. This conversion significantly enhances the building’s capacity to deliver more efficient medium-temperature hot water across the entire facility.

Grand unveiling

A dedication ceremony for the building is planned for the spring.

The momentous event will mark the official completion and opening of the new building and celebrate the culmination of hard work, commitment, and collaboration in bringing it to fruition.

It will also celebrate the 2018 foundational gift that established the college from Stephen A. Schwarzman, the chair, CEO, and co-founder of Blackstone, the global asset management and financial services firm. In addition, it will acknowledge Sebastian Man ’79, SM ’80, the first donor to support the building after Schwarzman. Man’s gift will be recognized with the naming of a key space in the building that will enrich the academic and research activities of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing and the Institute.
