Best Things to Do

Best shopping, best nightlife, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, cities, neighborhoods, and islands to visit, how to get around.

Most of us know Mexico is one of the top travel destinations in the world. But do you know why? The answer is Cancun. Arguably one of the most iconic beach destinations in the world, Cancun as a city is what put Mexico on the radar for international tourism 50 years ago.

Before the 1970s, Cancun was little more than a stretch of sun-bleached beaches, thick mangrove jungles, lagoons, and tiny, remote fishing villages. The region we now know as Cancun's Hotel Zone was developed in the 1970s specifically for tourism. Today, the area is one of the most-visited beach destinations in the world.

I have been visiting Cancun regularly for nearly 15 years, which is baby steps in its lifespan, and yet I have seen the destination transform tremendously. Not only does it have the most photogenic beaches in Mexico , but it also has world-class entertainment, dining, natural attractions, and fabulous food. I also love that visitors are now venturing beyond the confines of their all-inclusive resorts to discover the more local side of Cancun, whether that's in its thriving Downtown or off the beaten path in the smaller surrounding beach villages.

And I'm not alone in my appreciation for Cancun. "The connectivity, entertainment and culinary options, and most of all, the Caribbean Sea and ultra-fine white-sand beaches are what I love about Cancun," said Zach Rabinor, founder and CEO of Journey Mexico and a Travel + Leisure A-List Advisor.

He added, "My clients pick Cancun for the same reasons: easy accessibility from the U.S., Canada, Europe, Central and South America, Russia — just about everywhere in the world — and, of course, the Caribbean Sea and beaches, as well as the Mexican hospitality, food, culture, and history."

While travelers these days are branching out of their comfort zones and seeking far-flung, more remote destinations around the world, it is always nice to return to a place like Cancun that consistently delivers year after year.

"Cancun is the perfect destination to relax by the Caribbean Sea, be in touch with nature, learn history by connecting with Mayan culture, experience the best spa treatments you can find around the world, and delight your senses with incredible culinary options. Cancun really has it all," said Jimena Fernández, cluster director of marketing at Waldorf Astoria Cancun.

Best Hotels & Resorts

Nizuc resort & spa.

Close enough to the airport, while still feeling a world away, Nizuc Resort & Spa is all about quiet, low-key luxury and stunning design. "This is a great five-star property on the southern end of Cancun, close to the airport, but not to the overcrowded Hotel Zone. It features multiple restaurants and excellent service," said Rabinor.

Waldorf Astoria Cancun

When the Waldorf Astoria Cancun opened in 2022, it turned quite a few heads. So much so that it was listed on T+L's 2023 It List . Perched on 100 acres of powdery soft beachfront, the 173-key hotel evokes that classic art deco Waldorf Astoria elegance, with a decidedly Caribbean coastal energy. The spa, as well as Malpeque, the property's restaurant, are two signature standouts.

InterContinental Presidente Cancun Resort, an IHG Hotel

Travelers looking for an exceptional hotel option should consider the InterContinental Presidente Cancun Resort . Rabinor recommends it for its spectacular beachfront access. The King Signature Suite Ocean Front rooms are an absolute dream, with stunning terraces overlooking the sugary white sand.

Live Aqua Cancun

Cancun is practically overflowing with fabulous all-inclusive resorts . But my personal favorite is Live Aqua Cancun. This oceanfront, adults-only all-inclusive overlooks one of the best beaches in Cancun, with a wide selection of excellent restaurants, sparkling pools, and gorgeous ocean-view rooms. Select accommodations on the higher floors for upgraded perks like access to the Aqua Club Lounge. Tip: Be sure to book a table at Sea Corner for its toes-in-the-sand tacos and ceviches.

Excellence Riviera Cancun

What I love about Excellence Riviera Cancun is that it hits every note just right: gorgeous suites, meandering pools, a prime Caribbean beachfront location, and a sprawling spa. Be sure to experience one of the best hydrotherapy circuits in the region, and book a table at the chic, alfresco Lobster House for a memorable romantic dinner.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

With a location at the northern end of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, Cancun is one of the best places in the world for snorkeling and scuba diving. Not only are the waters surrounding Cancun home to a brilliant array of beautiful coral and marine life, they are also home to MUSA, the Underwater Museum of Art, featuring 500 submerged sculptures used to promote the growth of coral life. If you’re visiting in the summer months, you may have the opportunity to swim alongside majestic whale sharks.

Archaeological Sites

Within driving distance from Cancun are some of the most impressive archaeological ruins in Mexico . Chichén Itzá is a three-hour drive away, while Tulum and Coba are approximately two hours by car. You can also explore Ek Balam, a lesser-visited Mayan archaeological site just outside of Valladolid.

Isla Mujeres

A quick 20-minute ferry ride from the mainland will put you on the sun-bleached beaches of Isla Mujeres . This gorgeous, laid-back island is known for its shimmery, translucent water, some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, and a low-key energy that is completely different from Cancun's frenetic Hotel Zone. Pick a beach club and lounge for the day on Playa Norte, or rent a golf cart to circumnavigate the island and discover its breathtaking vistas.

Downtown Cancun

While most tourists stick to the Hotel Zone, locals will tell you that Downtown Cancun is where the real treasures are unearthed. Hop on a bus or take an authorized taxi from your hotel to discover the brilliant street art, the food trucks at Parque Las Palapas, or the Hotel Zone skyline views from Malecón Tajamar.

Unique to the Yucatan Peninsula is the network of underground rivers and caves. These natural sinkholes, known as cenotes , are sacred spots in the Mayan world, believed to be entrances to the underworld. Today, they continue to be protected sites, and visitors can swim, snorkel, and explore these subterranean secrets.

Luxury Avenue

Cancun is a paradise for luxury labels and internationally recognized brands. Luxury Avenue is one of the higher-end shopping malls within the Hotel Zone, home to shops like Cartier, Hermes, Patek Philippe, and Carolina Herrera.

Another affluent shopping center, La Isla is a hot spot for international brands like Abercrombie & Fitch, Armani Exchange, Sephora, and Pull & Bear. La Isla is also an entertainment hub with the Sky Wheel, the third-largest panoramic Ferris wheel in Latin America, and an outpost of Ripley's Believe It or Not!

For local Mexican handicrafts and handmade souvenirs that are of a higher quality than what you might find in the Hotel Zone, Mercado 28 is one of the oldest flea markets in Cancun. Discover everything from T-shirts and tequila to food stalls and colorful gifts.

Jonathan Ross/Getty Images

There’s a reason Coco Bongo has been around for nearly 30 years. The legendary nightclub is by far the most famous in Cancun's Hotel Zone and the one that brings the most energy with nightly acrobatics, large-scale video projections, and nonstop music. Rabinor said, "Coco Bongo is a must-visit, but be forewarned — serious nightlife enthusiasts only."

Every night of the week is an epic party at Mandala, a nightclub with over-the-top, themed nights like Carnival Mondays and Gone Wild Saturdays. Brace yourself for neon lights, strong cocktails, and nonstop pulsing music from open until close.

Recreate the energy and colorful kaleidoscope of the Xochimilco canals in Mexico City. The Xoximilco Cruise Cultural Mexican Fiesta is a tour package party that takes visitors aboard a traditional trajinera boat with all the trimmings: live music, folk dancers, and, of course, unlimited food, tequila, and beer. It's one of the most fun theme parks in the Cancun area, and a party you won't forget.

The City Nightclub

One of the most famous nightclubs in Cancun, The City has a reputation for a stellar set list and dazzling light show to match. It features multiple floors, including an open-air terrace, an indoor dance floor, and a live music stage.

One of the most popular LGBTQ+ bars in Cancun, 11:11 is a staple in the nightlife scene. Here, cocktails are strong, performances are elaborate, and DJs spin everything from hip hop and Latin tunes to EDM.

Sarah8000/Getty Images

Puerto Santo

Rabinor recommends Puerto Santo for its laid-back, open-air seafood dining directly on the beach. Fresh fish, oysters, strong cocktails, and a toes-in-the-sand setting make this one of the standouts for a relaxed and scenic dining experience in the heart of Cancun.

El Doctorcito

Along Cancun's Huayacán Avenue, El Doctorcito serves up exceedingly fresh Sonoran-style seafood. Crunchy tostadas topped with shrimp and local catch of the day, aguachiles , fish tacos, and even sashimi — you cannot order incorrectly at this local seafood joint. "Avenida Huayacán is the new area that most tourists do not know," said Fernández. "It's residential and very trendy, where many restaurants and bars are opening. It's definitely the place to be."

Siete Cielos Pizzeria by Frontoni

It's never a bad time for a classic Neapolitan pizza. So, if you're (understandably) craving one in Cancun, Rabinor recommends heading to Siete Cielos Pizzeria by Frontoni. Located near Puerto Cancun, the funky alfresco joint serves wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas, calzones, and sweet treats.

If you still haven't quite satisfied that Italian craving, Rabinor says Cenacolo serves the best Italian food in the city. The elegant restaurant has an impeccable wine list, gorgeous cocktails, and a menu of handmade pasta that may have you Googling the next flight deal to Rome.

Marbella Fish Market & Raw Bar

A personal favorite of mine in Cancun, Marbella Fish Market & Raw Bar is much more than a fresh seafood restaurant; it's also an experience. Make your way through the aisles of a small grocery store to be rewarded with a gorgeous restaurant terrace. Choose your own freshly caught seafood from the display case and the chef will whip it up to perfection.

Gerard Puigmal/Getty Images

The best time to visit Cancun is from November to March. Expect hot days and cool evenings, with minimal rainfall. Rabinor recommends November, in particular, for the slightly cooler, drier weather and absence of winter cold fronts.

That said, you'll find the best deals in Cancun over the rainy season, which begins in June. Hurricanes and tropical storms most likely occur from September to October, but this is when hotel and flight prices are at their lowest.

The summer months are best for diving and snorkeling, particularly if you want the chance to swim beside the elusive whale sharks. Keep in mind summer will mean much hotter temperatures coupled with high humidity.

Cancun is one of the easiest destinations to reach in Mexico. The Cancun International Airport is the second busiest in the country, with direct international flights from more than 30 cities in the U.S.

Once on the ground in Cancun, most hotels offer transportation services for a fee. You can also book taxis, shuttles, and private transfers ahead of time. One thing you cannot take in Cancun is Uber. It exists, but because of tensions between the taxi companies and Uber, it is not recommended to use the ride-share app. Uber is also not permitted to pick up at the airport.

pixelrgb/Getty Images

Hotel Zone : By far the most popular neighborhood for tourists in Cancun, the Hotel Zone is the skinny, Caribbean Sea-facing stretch of beach that is lined with the majority of resorts in the city. Here, you'll find restaurants, nightclubs, beach clubs, and most of the city's tourist attractions.

Downtown : If you're looking for a neighborhood where the locals hang out, Downtown Cancun (El Centro) is it. Packed with restaurants, bars, food trucks, public art, and shopping, this area is just as full of life as the Hotel Zone, except you'll be hanging out with locals rather than other tourists.

Isla Mujeres : Just a quick ferry ride away, Isla Mujeres is the laid-back sibling to the pulsing Cancun scene. Chill beach bars, open-air restaurants, and spectacular beaches make this one of the prettiest and low-key areas to explore in Cancun.

Puerto Morelos : For something low-key on the mainland, Puerto Morelos is a small village just 20 minutes south of Cancun International Airport. Today, it's seeing an increase in hotels opening around it, but the beachfront town itself is known for its sleepy vibe, small boutiques, charming restaurants, and sliver of shockingly white sand.

Taxi : This is the easiest way to get around in Cancun, albeit one of the most expensive. Companies like Uber are difficult to use in Cancun, due to hostility between taxi companies and the apps. It is much more acceptable to take a cab from a licensed taxi stand. Taxi rates are high in Cancun, but they're based on distance, so you can easily confirm the price before accepting the ride.

Bus : Cancun has a reliable and safe public bus system that travels up and down the Hotel Zone and throughout Downtown. The most popular routes are the R1 and R2. Buses run every five minutes and a one-way ride is roughly 10 pesos.

Car Rental: Cancun has almost every car rental company you can think of, whether at the airport, in the Hotel Zone, or Downtown. If you'd rather have your own car, there are many opportunities to rent one. Parking facilities are widely available, though they usually come at a cost.

We were provided wetsuits, water shoes, and hard hats with headlamps and well educated about the geology and conservation. Lunch was surprisingly good too. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Gill_R, Feb 2023

Wonderful experience Excellent staff Great safety Wonderful combo of riding, seeing the jungle, history of the area, and swimming in the cenote. It was wonderful. The experience accommodates beginners for sure ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ DianeC_L, Nov 2022

This all-inclusive water park in Tulum is the conversion point of several underground rivers. In fact, the huge inlet is the center of the world’s largest network flow.

It’s home to numerous species of flora and fauna including mangrove forests, marine life, and other animals.

The grounds are even home to a nursery with more than 270 species of native and endangered plants.

In addition to its beautiful scenery and eco-friendly efforts, admission to Xel-Há includes unlimited food, beverages, and snorkeling.

There are also numerous bars on site to enjoy their refreshing adult beverages in between your snorkel and swimming sessions.

Great eco-park! Just watch utube vids- their own promotional ones- they deliver the goods! You don’t see the crowded eating/drinking areas, but the park itself is large enough that crowding want really a bother. Numerous included activities available, so don’t get there late. We showed up at noon and had to miss out on a few things. We thought getting there at 9am would make for to long a day, but we found time flew by and we were rushing. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Angel_G, Jul 2018

Cancun Tours & Excursions : Final thoughts

Whether you are looking to relax on the beach, explore Mayan ruins, or swim with the largest fish on earth, Cancun has a tour for everyone.

However, it’s important to do your research to determine which companies and tour guides are reputable and provide the type of experience you might be seeking.

This will help prevent travel mishaps, missed opportunities, and potentially wasted money.

Try to plan ahead as much as possible (typically 2-4 weeks when it comes to booking tours and excursions).

Since Cancun is such a popular destination, know that tours and excursions may fill up quickly, especially during the week of Spring Break and the summer months.

Explore as much as you can in the time you are given (and within your budget!). One of the great things about Cancun is that there’s always something to see and do with many options to fit every budget.

You can sail the Caribbean on a private catamaran or hike through underground caverns one day, and enjoy dinner and a show the next.

The opportunities are endless!

Cancún, Cabo or Puerto Vallarta: Which Mexico resort is best for you?

A comparison of the country’s most popular beach towns.

No other country welcomes more American tourists than Mexico . Vacationers go for sun-soaked beaches, warmer temperatures and low costs that feel far away from the cold reality of everyday life. More than 12 million American tourists took a flight into Mexico last year, according to statistics from the country’s secretary of tourism.

The vast majority head for one of three beach zones: Cancún, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta, which represented three of the top four airports for international tourist arrivals last year, including Mexico City.

While you can’t go wrong with any of these three resort areas — they’re famous for a reason — there are noticeable nuances that can tip the scales when you’re picking one over the others. Over the past 10 years, I’ve visited all three on several occasions: Cancún half a dozen times, Vallarta twice, and, most recently Los Cabos. In terms of visitor appeal and natural beauty, they rival some of the world’s most remarkable and serene beaches.

We asked the travel platform Hopper to pull average spring break prices — covering March, April and May — to show how the costs break down. Here’s the case for each destination, depending on your budget and travel style.

Cancún: All-inclusives, nightclubs, beautiful beaches

Located on the edge of the Caribbean Sea, Cancún is the most popular of the three Mexican getaways by a sizable margin. It is also the most “touristy” in terms of spoken English, Americanized cuisine and the volume of resorts and daily flights from North America and Europe.

In my experience, it’s been the most expensive of the resort hubs in this comparison, although Hopper’s data shows it has the lowest average “good deal” airfare this spring ($330), and the average nightly hotel rate is higher in Los Cabos. In Cancún, you’ll get a lot in return for your money: tranquil, teal and warm waters and white sandy beaches (when the seaweed isn’t bad). There is also the most nightlife and the best snorkeling and scuba diving. The Cancún area and surrounding Mayan Riviera are full of all-inclusive resorts with options ranging from adults-only to kid-friendly.

Cancún is only a couple hours drive ( and now train ) from world-class Mayan ruins such as Chichen Itza and Tulum. There’s also swimmable, flooded sinkholes called cenotes that are a wonder on their own.

Good deal airfare: $330

Average nightly hotel rate: $251

Best for: Clubgoers, families, adventure seekers, history buffs

Los Cabos: Desert romance, deep-sea fishing, wedding backdrops

The area we call “Cabo” is actually two beach towns in one, hence its other nickname, “Los Cabos.”

Separated by 20 miles and on opposite sides of the tip of Baja California, San Jose del Cabo (where the airport is) is the older town located on the Gulf of California. Just around the corner lies Cabo San Lucas, the newer and fast-growing town at the confluence of the Pacific and the gulf.

To get an idea of Cabo’s romantic scenery, imagine if Arizona, Southern California and the Mediterranean had a baby. Dramatic deserts, rugged coastline, deep blue ocean and a famous sea arch (a.k.a. “El Arco”) are flanked by endemic elephant trees, desert sand , and gorgeous cactuses.

As the second-most popular beach retreat on this list, Cabo has an abundance of wildlife and biggest beaches, as well as high-end resorts, spas, golf courses and restaurants.

Travel adviser Sebastian Garrido recommends deep-sea fishing — or just enjoying the products of Pacific waters. Cabo blends coastal Mexican cuisine with resort fare, catering to both locals and tourists alike.

“You can find some of the best seafood around the world down here,” he said.

In my experience, swimming on the Pacific is often forbidden by lifeguards, given the dangerous undertow. But the gulf side is tranquil and family friendly.

A popular place for weddings, Cabo is probably the most dreamy landscape of the three destinations.

Good deal airfare: $447

Average nightly hotel rate: $475

Best for: Pacific views, sport fishing, weddings, culture that caters to locals and tourists, sunsets and scenery.

Puerto Vallarta: Fewer Americans, sleepy beaches, birria tacos

Nestled down the Pacific coast in Jalisco state, Puerto Vallarta is a classic, cozy beach town. It is surrounded by mountains and tropical jungles and often caters more to Mexican tourists than Americans.

In terms of culture, cuisine, number of restaurants, boardwalk shopping, cobblestone streets, and affordability, Vallarta is the most “Mexican” of the bunch, which is endearing.

Vallarta’s narrower beaches are admittedly more confined than Cancun’s or Cabo’s . But they’re still beautiful. Among the Pacific views, you can spot humpback whale breaches early in the year. While there are dozens of large luxury resorts and all-inclusives here, you’ll also find a lot of small hotels that are locally owned and operated .

Jalisco is the home of birria , a complex braise of goat, lamb or beef served with a rich, spicy broth. I’ve also had chilaquiles and tacos al pastor here that trumped the versions I tried in Cancún and Cabo.

“Puerto Vallarta offers an authentic Mexican experience as it was not created as a tourism destination,” says Gustavo Rivas-Solis, a travel publicist who represents the area. “It grew into one as people took notice and fell in love with Bay of Banderas and its surroundings.”

Good deal airfare: $412

Average nightly hotel rate: $192

Best for: Ocean views, sunbathing, fewer tourists, colonial architecture, jungle hikes, street shopping

Why Go To Cancun

Cancún is nothing if not resilient. Consider the debilitating effects Hurricane Wilma had on the region in 2005 – drowned shores, destroyed storefronts and capsized boats. But now, this skinny "7"-shaped barrier island in southeastern Mexico is once again a go-to spot for beaches, golfing and nightlife. Cancún also remains one of the most affordable vacation destinations in the Western Hemisphere, especially if you book a cruise .

So what's there to do here? Cancún's beaches are spectacular spots to try some Jet Skiing and parasailing. If you want to explore beyond Cancun, the city's top guided tours offer daytrips to idyllic spots like Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy. And there's also a host of after-hours activities; be sure to check out the acrobatic dance performances at the  Coco Bongo Cancún . This area is also close to one of the most recognizable sites of Mexico – don't miss out on the chance to behold  Chichén Itzá , a large Mayan archaeological site that is one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.

Cancun Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Cancún is from December to April during the peak season. Even though the crowds are heavier, you'll experience near-perfect weather and find some of the cheapest flight and room rates for a winter getaway at the beach. Just try to avoid traveling from mid-March to early April – that's when spring breakers descend on the Yucatán's shores. There are also significant discounts in late spring, summer and fall, but Cancún summers are sweltering and the fall months are prone to storms.

Weather in Cancun

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

Don't stop to chitchat Cancún is crawling with timeshare representatives. They'll try to grab your attention in the airport, in the hotel lobbies and around the shopping areas. If you're not interested, give a polite but firm, "No, thank you," and keep moving.

Exchange your dollars for pesos While most businesses accept U.S. dollars and credit cards, you will want to have some pesos in your pocket if you're planning to ride the bus or shop at the local markets.

Plan a daytrip Quick trips to neighboring resort cities like Tulum or Playa del Carmen are easy thanks to the variety of organized tours .

How to Save Money in Cancun

Use the buses  They're reliable and abundant, and they cost less than a dollar to ride.

Go all-inclusive  Cancún is heavily populated with all-inclusive resorts . Some of the best packages include all your meals, alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, gym access and even gratuity.

Avoid overpriced souvenirs Vendors will be hawking souvenirs along the beaches and outside historical sites. If you don't want to overpay, politely decline and purchase your mementos elsewhere.

Culture & Customs

Cancún's popularity with college-age travelers lends to a more casual dress code, even in restaurants. You should cover up your swimsuit when away from the pool or beach, but you will find many people walking along the Boulevard Kukulcán in beach-type attire. Unlike other destinations, Cancún's nighttime establishments welcome a more relaxed atmosphere and appearance.

The official language here is Spanish, but because Cancún is such a popular tourist spot for English speakers, you should have no trouble finding someone who speaks English, especially within the tourism and hospitality industries.

Cancún's official currency is the Mexican peso. Since the Mexican peso to U.S. dollar exchange rate fluctuates, be sure to check what the  current exchange rate  is before you go. American dollars are, however, widely accepted in Cancún.

What to Eat

Cancún has almost as many restaurants as  hotels , so travelers should have no problem finding some tasty eats. If you booked an all-inclusive, your meals and drinks will most likely be bundled in the room rate, leaving you little motivation to eat off your resort grounds. But if you tire of the endless buffet, you'll find a bevy of restaurants worth sampling.

If it's seafood you're after, you can't go wrong with a lobster meal at Lorenzillo's or the surf and turf at Puerto Madero – both regarded as excellent spots for a special occasion meal. Diners and critics are equally impressed with the "techno-emotional" cuisine offered at Benazuza , an adults-only restaurant serving small, colorful plates in The Pyramid at Grand Oasis hotel. For a splurge-worthy meal the whole family will enjoy, locals rave about Bovino's Churrascaria , a Brazilian steakhouse in downtown Cancun. If it's just you and your sweetheart and you're in the mood for a romantic atmosphere, locals and visitors recommend the rustic La Fonda del Zancudo for traditional Mexican or La Habichuela Centro for a menu Mexican-Caribbean fusion plates.

For a more casual dining experience, make your way to Café Antoinette (for breakfast), Marakamé Café (for brunch) or El Fish Fritanga (for lunch).

Cancún has largely avoided the drug violence that has afflicted much of Mexico. But while crime against tourists is especially low, the  U.S. State Department advises constant vigilance. Your most important safety concern in Cancún is likely to be in the water. Beware of rough surf and only swim when supervised by a lifeguard. Green beach flags signify safe waters while yellow and red flags advise increasing caution. If you see a black flag, swimming is prohibited. Drinking water can also present potential health concerns. Water in the Hotel Zone (especially at your resort) is generally safe to drink in all forms since it has been purified. Allay any concerns by calling your resort ahead of your trip to ensure the hotel uses a water purification system (most do). The farther you venture outside the Hotel Zone, the more cautious you should be about the drinking water. If you're apprehensive, stick to bottled water to avoid an upset stomach from contaminated water.

Getting Around Cancun

The best way to get around Cancún is the bus, which stops frequently along Boulevard Kukulcán and within the downtown area. One-way fares are a steal at 12 Mexican pesos (or around 60 cents), making a ride in a Cancún taxi seem exorbitant. However, you  should   splurge for a cab to get to and from the Cancún International Airport (CUN), located less than 15 miles from the Hotel Zone and 10 miles from downtown. In fact, you can book your taxi online and save by making advance reservations. There are car rental kiosks in the airport, but driving yourself isn't recommended – the area's narrow roads and speedy traffic patterns can be intimidating.

Entry & Exit Requirements

You'll need a passport to visit Mexico, plus a tourism card (or FMM) that can be issued at any Mexican consulate, border-crossing point, Mexican tourism office or directly from your airline. FMMs are usually issued free of charge upon arrival (and if not, the price is absorbed into the cost of your plane ticket). Be sure to hold onto this card for the duration of your trip, as you will need to present it upon departing the country. It's also a good idea to leave your passport and FMM in a secure location and carry a photocopy of both documents with you at all times. For additional information, visit the U.S. State Department's website .

The pyramid-like El Castillo at  Chichén Itzá was once used by Mayans as a temple to the god Kukulkan.

Cancun Travel Experience - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Viva La Travelista Logo

Honest Xoximilco Review: Is It Worth It in 2024?

' src=

Are you interested in the Xoximilco Cancun attraction and wondering if it’s worth it? You’ve come to the right guide!

As a travel blogger that lives in Playa del Carmen , I personally went to Xoximilco to celebrate my birthday, and I have to say that it was definitely a fun experience.

But this party-centric fiesta is not for everyone, so in this honest review , I’ll break down everything you need to know about this unique Xcaret attraction.

Ready to find out if this colorful floating fiesta experience is right for you? Let’s get started!

A trajinera boat at Xoximilco Cancun called "Viva Xenses" with tables and chairs

🏆 Best Xcaret Park for PartyING

Pros: ✅ Fun atmosphere ✅ Unlimited drinks ✅ Live music

Cons: ❌ Average food ❌ Can be expensive ❌ Premium drinks extra

Coupon Code: XOXI10 Discount: 10% off Monday-Wednesday

Is Xoximilco Worth It?

Honestly, I had an absolute blast at Xoximilco and definitely think it’s worth it if you like to drink and are looking for something fun to do at night.

The atmosphere was lively and colorful, the drinks and tequila were flowing, and the live music and dancing made it a really fun night.

I’ve been to the original Xochimilco attraction in Mexico City and this recreation in Cancun was just as fun!

The main difference is that this takes place at night and all your food and drinks are included.

The only thing that I thought could be improved upon was the food. While it was good, none of the dishes really blew me away.

But then again, the focus of the night is more on the entertainment and drinking rather than gourmet cuisine.

Overall, I really enjoyed the Xoximilco experience and would highly recommend checking it out if you’re visiting Cancun or the surrounding Riviera Maya region. It did not disappoint!

What’s the Experience Like?

If you’re not familiar with Xoximilco, it’s an interactive Mexican fiesta experience that mimics the traditional floating gardens of Xochimilco in Mexico City .

It’s a popular tourist attraction in Cancun and is known for its lively atmosphere, delicious food, and tequila-filled party boats.

After being picked up from your hotel, you’ll board a traditional flat-bottomed “trajinera” boat and float through canals filled with other colorful boats.

During the ride, you’ll have unlimited drinks (including tequila, beer, and non-alcoholic options) and be served a 3-course meal of traditional Mexican dishes.

There are also live musicians on passing boats playing traditional Mariachi and Mexican music, and each boat has a personal guide to get the party started and keep the energy going.

The whole experience lasts about 3 hours and is a great way to experience Mexican culture while visiting Cancun or the surrounding Riviera Maya.

Pros and Cons

Here’s a quick overview of the pros and cons of this unique attraction:

  • Fun and festive atmosphere
  • Unlimited drinks included
  • Live music and entertainment
  • Unique cultural experience
  • Great for group outings or celebrations
  • Transportation available (added charge)
  • Food is good but not outstanding
  • Can be a bit pricey
  • Premium drinks cost more
  • Expensive photo package

Buying Tickets

The best way to buy tickets for Xoximilco is through the official Xcaret website .

When buying tickets, you’ll have the option to add on transportation from your hotel for an additional fee, or you can arrange your own transportation.

I would definitely recommend adding on the transportation, especially if you’re staying in Playa del Carmen or Riviera Maya.

The added transportation fee is worth it for the convenience of not having to worry about driving or getting a taxi after a night of drinking!

What to Expect

Here’s what to expect at the experience:

You’ll be picked up from your hotel or designated meeting point and taken to the Xoximilco attraction, which is right next to Xavage and not far from the Cancun Airport.

It’s about a 20 minute drive from the Cancun Hotel Zone or about 50 minutes north of Playa del Carmen, depending on traffic.

Me taking a selfie in front of the Xoximilco boats

I was picked up from Playa del Carmen at 5:45pm and arrived at the attraction around 6:45pm. The Xcaret buses are very large and comfortable.

After arriving, you’ll get to hangout in the small courtyard area where they have live music and some fun Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera performers.

You can also peruse the gift shops for souvenirs and take a final bathroom break before boarding.

Very tall Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera performers at Xoximilco

Once it’s time to board the boat, you’ll head down to your assigned trajinera boat and hop on board to start the night.

The boats are named after Xcaret attractions and Mexican states, and each one is decked out with colorful lights and decorations.

I was on the “Viva Xenses” boat–named after Xenses Park .

Your same guide from the bus (known as your “compadre”) will be with you for the rest of the night and will give an overview of the food and drinks and what to expect.

They’ll also make introductions so it’s pretty easy to meet the other people on the boat. Each boat seats about 26 people.

Food & Drinks

As mentioned, all food and drinks are included in your ticket.

Each seat has a place setting with cups, shot glasses, and some tortilla chips and chicharrones (fried pork rinds).

You’ll be served a 3-course meal of traditional Mexican dishes, including appetizers, a main course with various options to choose from, and a dessert tray.

I thought the food was decent, but the portions were kinda small and it was nothing to write home about.

However, the drinks were flowing and definitely added to the fun atmosphere!

The appetizers are shared and include:

  • Pico de gallo
  • Sardines or grasshoppers
  • Oaxaca cheese

The place settings on the table at Xoximilco

Main Course

The main course comes with tortillas and includes:

  • Cochinita pibil
  • Steak fajitas

A tray of main courses on a table at Xoximilco

The dessert tray includes:

  • Assorted Mexican sweets
  • Assorted Mexican candies

For drinks, there’s a cooler under the table and you can self serve Corona beers and flavored margarita cans, as well as non-alcoholic beverages such as soda, jamaica, and horchata.

They also have Jose Cuervo tequila bottles that you can pass around the table and pour shots for yourself and others.

If you want to upgrade to premium drinks and tequila, you can pay for those separately.

Entertainment

The entertainment on the boats includes live music, dancing, and interactive games.

At one point, our guide pulled out one of those hand shock games that we all played together. Ouch!

There are also other boats passing by with different musicians and performers, so you’ll get to experience Mariachi music, as well as a variety of other Mexican music throughout the night.

A floating barge next to a Mariachi band at Xoximilco

There’s different stops along the canals where you can get off and visit souvenir stands or take a bathroom break.

It’s a really fun atmosphere and everyone is dancing and having a good time. They’ll also start a Conga line around the boat to get people up and moving!

A group of people standing and dancing on a boat at Xoximilco

Our guide was really fun and kept the energy going, making it easy to interact with the other people on the boat.

It goes by so fast and before you know it, it’s time to head back to the dock!

Return Transportation

The good thing about opting for the official transportation is that you don’t have to worry about getting back to your hotel after a night of drinking.

Once the boat ride ends, you’ll board the same bus you arrived on and be taken back to your hotel or designated meeting point.

Xcaret official buses parked in front of Xoximilco

Just like all the other Xcaret attractions , you’ll be able to purchase of photo package of your personal photos from the experience.

There aren’t designated “Xelfie” stations like at some of the other Xcaret parks but instead there are professional photographers stationed all over who will scan your wristband and take your photo.

There’s a bunch of fun photo ops throughout the entire experience where you can get your photo taken.

Honestly, the photo package is pretty expensive and it’s just as easy to take your own photos with your cell phone.

Tips for Visiting Xoximilco

Follow these tips to make the most of your experience:

  • Book in advance: When booking tickets on the official website , you’ll automatically save 15% off by booking at least 21 days in advance or 10% off by booking at least 7 days in advance.
  • Check for Xcaret discounts: In addition to the automatic advanced purchase discounts mentioned above, Xcaret usually offers extra promotions and coupon codes, so make sure to check my Xcaret Resource Hub for the latest promotions before purchasing your tickets.
  • Add on the transportation: The official transportation can only be added at the time of booking, so make sure to add it on when purchasing your tickets . It’s pretty far from Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya, so the added convenience is definitely worth it after a night of drinking.
  • Make sure to go to the bathroom before boarding: There aren’t any bathrooms on the boat so make sure to go before boarding. There’s also 1 stop in the middle of the experience for a bathroom break.
  • Go with a good attitude: This experience is all about having fun and embracing Mexican culture. So make sure to go with a positive attitude and get ready to meet new people, dance, and have a good time!
  • Pace yourself: The drinks are unlimited, but be careful not to overdo it. It’s easy to get caught up in the celebration and have one too many tequila shots. They were passing out barf bags on the bus ride home! I’ve also heard about people having to be rolled out in a wheelchair.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I had a great time at Xoximilco and would definitely recommend it as a fun nighttime activity in Cancun or Riviera Maya.

The food and drinks were good enough to keep the party going and the entertainment was engaging and interactive.

It’s a really fun and unique way to celebrate Mexican culture and get a taste of the traditional Xochimilco experience without having to go to Mexico City.

If you like to drink and dance, I think you will have a great time!

Just make sure to book your tickets on the official website and follow these tips for the best experience possible!

Cancun Travel Experiences - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

cancun travel experience reviews

The first Hyatt Vivid all-inclusive resort opens in Cancun

T here's a new reason to be all-in on all-inclusive resorts : Hyatt's newest all-inclusive brand, Hyatt Vivid Hotels & Resorts, just opened its very first property.

Located in Cancun , about 10 minutes from the famed Hotel Zone, the Hyatt Vivid Grand Island is an adults-only property with 400 suites tucked away in the gated community of Grand Island, facing the Nichupte Lagoon.

Part of a project with a soon-to-open Dreams resort, Hyatt Vivid Grand Island is in a sleek high-rise building that feels ultramodern compared to many of the other all-inclusive resorts around Cancun.

Hyatt Vivid feels different, too, and is touted as offering "couples, friends and solo travelers locally inspired itineraries and ... social interaction at every turn through experiential-driven programming, dining, and entertainment." Or, reading between the lines, it's a new take on all-inclusive resorts focused on travelers who want the convenience of an all-inclusive with more opportunities to engage with the location outside the the resort's walls.

This particular property also feels like it falls more in line with a typical lifestyle hotel, like Hyatt's own Thompson brand, and will offer Mayan- and bohemian-inspired room design, boxes for private room service delivery, Pharmacopia bathroom amenities and an outdoor space.

For an extra splurge, Vantage Club-level rooms offer upgraded perks like soaking tubs, in-room espresso machines, pillow menus, concierge services and access to the Vantage Club lounge for premium liquor, continental breakfast and afternoon tea, plus a special a la carte dining experience at one of the restaurants.

Related: The 16 best Hyatt all-inclusive resorts in the world

For food, guests can choose among 11 different dining experiences and six different bars and lounges, all of which look more like a contemporary restaurant you'd find in Austin or Los Angeles than a standard all-inclusive resort property. Dining options range from your classic breakfast buffet to a chic French restaurant, a poolside Mediterranean spot, a rooftop Japanese affair offering great views, and your standard lobby and swim-up bars.

But one thing to take note of is that the Hyatt Vivid Grand Island isn't directly on the beach. Rather, guests are shuttled 10 minutes to the Ennea Beach Club, a private "boho-chic" beach club with a restaurant, snack bar, two pools, daybeds and access to the popular Playa Delfines beach.

Back at the resort, a tiered pool deck offers three pools, including the longest rooftop pool in Cancun, plus a swim-up bar, snack bar and a food truck.

With Hyatt Vivid's mission to help bring more local culture and experiences to all-inclusive resorts, guests at this property can enjoy activities like painting and pottery lessons, Spanish classes, mezcal tasting, local fashion shows and cacao ceremonies.

There are plenty of physical activities, too, like glow volleyball at night, paddleboard yoga, boxing and a rooftop fitness center with equipment.

Hyatt, over the last few years, has been on a spree of launching new all-inclusive brands, including last year's debut of Impression by Secrets , a luxury all-inclusive brand with two locations open in Mexico, like Secrets Impression Moxche, which our team found to be one of the best all-inclusive resorts in Playa del Carmen.

Now, the arrival of the Hyatt Vivid adds a new flavor to the Inclusive Collection, one that will feel luxurious, laid-back and purposefully social.

How to book

In its early opening phase, guests can book the Hyatt Vivid Grand Island for 40% off for stays through Dec. 20 if booked by June 30. That means some stays come down as low as $159 per person per night. World of Hyatt members can book starting at 17,000 points per night, based on double occupancy, though the majority of the booking calendar shows most nights at 20,000 or 23,000 points.
