Rates can vary widely by room type and season. "We Paid" is intended to give a general sense of price, but you might find considerably different rates for your trip.

When we book, we aim for the optimum season for the destination, but we avoid holidays and major public events, when prices are highest. We generally book a room at one category up from the most basic.

We take advantage of promotional rates, when possible. That means the rate you see above might have included other benefits, such as spa or meal credits.

Thompson Chicago

  • Gallery walls of framed modern art in the Chicago hotel’s lobby match the eclectic art in the guest rooms, including work by artist Wes Lang (known for designing Kanye West’s tour T-shirts) hung over the beds.
  • The boutique hotel’s ambiance is obvious to more than the eye — sniff as you walk through the front doors and you’ll notice Thompson Hotels’ custom scent, called “Velvet” and meant to evoke the feeling of relaxing in a worn-in leather chair with a glass of scotch.
  • Thompson Chicago is home to Nico Osteria, a classic Italian restaurant backed by executive chef Tim Graham.
  • There is a lovely library feel in the lobby — books are stacked on side tables and lined up on shelves over the fireplace, while tufted velvet sofas and leather armchairs invite lounging.
  • The lobby also gives a peek into the hotel’s bar, Salone Nico, featuring a dramatic living wall of lush plants. The bar’s luxe look matches the rest of the hotel with warm wood-paneled walls, exposed brick and jewel-toned velvet seating.
  • Thompson Chicago’s chic style was crafted by British designer Tara Bernerd, the creative force behind the chain’s ultra-stylish Four-Star Belgraves hotel in London.
  • Expect to rub shoulders with a fashionable crowd. The luxury hotel is located in Chicago’s posh Gold Coast neighborhood, the city’s most upscale shopping district.
  • The boutique hotel is close to Lake Michigan’s Oak Street Beach and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago as well as stately homes that have long housed the city’s prominent families.
  • The rooms’ floor-to-ceiling windows showcase city or Lake Michicagn views, while a muted palette of gray and tan feels current. The furnishings are sleek and sophisticated — think plush velvet contemporary sofas and streamlined black beds.
  • Mostly-white bathrooms are equipped with rain shower heads and oversized terrycloth robes by Frette.
  • The Thompson Suites have terraces with views of downtown Chicago and a deep-soaking tub; the Penthouses are two-level loft-like suites with views of either the city or the lake.
  • The restaurant has been heralded for its rustic fare, including fresh pasta like  cacio e pepe (a simple but comforting dish with cheese and ground pepper) and ricotta gnocchi.
  • Nico Osteria is a hip meeting spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner, but staying here means you don’t even need a table — guests can order from the menu for room service 24 hours a day.
  • Thompson Chicago’s modern design carries through the restaurant outfitted with warm woods, leather booths and counter seating with views of the open kitchen.

18 Chicago-area hotels, spas earn stars on Forbes' 2024 Travel Guide, including 1 in the suburbs

The forbes 2024 travel guide gave high marks out to more than a dozen luxury chicago area hotels and spas, published february 20, 2024 • updated on february 20, 2024 at 11:34 am.

More than a dozen hotels and spas in Chicago earned 2024 Forbes Star Awards as part of the magazine's highly anticipated Forbes Travel Guide, with three locations earning a coveted five-star designation.

Additionally, one hotel spa in the suburbs made Forbes' list for 2024 with a four-star rating.

Feeling out of the loop? We'll catch you up on the Chicago news you need to know. Sign up for the weekly Chicago Catch-Up newsletter here.

According to Forbes, its star-rating system for hospitality, created in 1958, is the only independent global rating system for luxury hotels, restaurants, spas and ocean cruise ships.

"We verify luxury," the magazine said. "Our highly trained inspectors visit every property we rate, evaluating based on up to 900 objective criteria. Our hotel stays span a minimum of two nights."

The Forbes Star Awards are broken down into three categories, ranging from the highest rating, "Five Stars," to "Recommended."

Five-star properties deliver an "outstanding experience and consistently offer a highly customized level of service," Forbes said. Four star properties are "exceptional, offering high levels of service and quality of facility to match."

Recommended properties, Forbes said, are "excellent" and have "consistently good services and facilities."

In Chicago, three hotels earned five-star ratings from Forbes for 2024: The Langham Hotel, at 330 N. Wabash St.; The Peninsula Chicago, at 108 E. Superior St., and the Trump International Hotel & Tower, at 401 N. Wabash St.

According to Forbes, the Peninsula Chicago is the longest-running five star hotel in the city.

Three Chicago hotels earned four stars from the guide: Four Seasons Hotel Chicago at 900 N. Michigan, Park Hyatt Chicago at 800 N. Michigan Ave., and the Waldorf Astoria Chicago at 11 E. Walton St.

The following five hotels in Chicago also landed on Forbes Travel Guide's "Recommended" list:

  • Lowes Chicago Hotel, 455 N. Park Dr.,
  • Pendry Chicago, 230 N. Michigan Ave.,
  • The Ritz-Carlton Chicago, 160 E. Pearson St.
  • Thompson Chicago, 21 E. Bellevue St.
  • Viceroy Chicago, 111 N. State Street

Six spas at Chicago area hotels also earned accolades in the guide. The spa at the new St. Regis Chicago, at 401 E. Wacker Dr., earned five stars, with spas at the Trump, Waldorf Astoria, Peninsula, and Langham hotels each earning four stars.

In the suburbs, the Arista Spa and Salon at the Hotel Arista in Naperville, at 2139 City Gate Lane, also earned four stars. The hotel itself earned a spot on Forbes Travel Guide's "Recommended" list as well.

Get An Inside Peek At The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago Makeover By Correspondent Jaydine Sayer

April 22, 2016

forbes travel chicago

The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago Photo Courtesy of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company LLC

Presiding over North Michigan Avenue in the statuesque Water Tower Place shopping hub, The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago has served as a staple of the Windy City ’s tony Magnificent Mile for more than 40 years. But less well known is this bit of insider information: Despite its name, the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel wasn’t officially a part of the Ritz-Carlton chain until last August. (Its new status means, among other things, that you can make reservations and use rewards to book rooms on the Ritz-Carlton website.)

Once it became known that the hotel was being welcomed into the family, the travel industry expected a few changes would be on the horizon — and that’s exactly what has happened.

Presidential Suite Dining Area, Photo Courtesy of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company LLC

During a recent visit, we were able to sneak a peek at areas within the Chicago hotel that are being refreshed and rebuilt. These renovations are being rolled out in two phases. The first will likely be completed by the beginning of summer; the second will begin in early 2017.

Here’s a quick rundown on what to expect from the first part of the refashioning:

New Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge The new 2,600-square-foot club lounge will have floor-to-ceiling windows that peer out over the cityscape and Lake Michigan. Yes, the exclusive perks synonymous with the Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge will be offered (all-day refreshments, elegant breakfasts, a dedicated concierge) as well as unique features, like a clubby library that can be rented for private events.

The space is being designed by San Francisco firm Bamo , which has worked on Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach, Rosewood Sand Hill and other impressive addresses. Expect warm walnut hardwood floors, clean-lined walnut cabinets and a color palette of blues, golds and browns.

New fitness center While the fitness center will remain on the same floor — one below the main lobby — it will take over a new space. The benefit? It will be larger with 2,700 square feet and have a much more airy, open feel to it. (The current center is a bit of a windowless box.)

The new spot will have floor-to-ceiling windows that provide views of the lake and Navy Pier, as well as a studio space for yoga and other classes. New exercise equipment will be added to fill out the bigger area, too.

The Lobby, Photo Courtesy of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company LLC

Upgraded suites The luxury hotel’s 90 suites are getting a facelift as well. Bamo has its hand in room renovations. Suites will be updated, particularly the bathrooms, which have a minimal, modern look with white vanities, gray stone floors and a separate toilet. And the guest corridors outside the suites and every other room are getting a refresh.

The spa, lobby and beyond The spa, like the gym, is located one floor below the lobby, which is plenty convenient except for one thing: the elevators from the rooms do not go directly to that floor. Currently, guests wanting to reach the spa or fitness center must first go to the lobby and then walk down a short flight of stairs.

New elevator banks are being installed so you can skip this step and arrive directly to the spa and fitness center from your guest room corridor. No more spa robes in the lobby.

Phase two of the renovations — to start and finish in 2017 — will focus on the spa and meetings/event space upgrades.

The world’s 30 coolest streets, ranked by time out (5 u.s. cities made the list).

Every year, Time Out ranks the best cities in the world . For 2024, it’s ranking the world’s 30 coolest streets—and streets in five U.S. cities made the cut. But these are not the expected spots (sorry, Fifth Avenue).

“These streets are places with real character and community at their heart, where in-the-know locals go to hang out, eat, drink, dance and shop,” Grace Beard, Time Out’s travel editor, told me in an interview. “This is a definitive guide to the very coolest bits of the world’s most exciting cities, for travelers who really want to get a taste of local life on their next city break.”

High Street in Melbourne, Australia, came out on top, with Time Out naming it the coolest street on the planet. “High Street is cool in all the ways you’d expect with its unique, something-for-everyone local businesses.” Leah Glynn, Time Out’s Melbourne editor, told me in an interview. “There are epic restaurants, hidden bars, live music venues and boutique shops—but there’s also a warm sense of community spirit that means everyone feels welcome. It’s a place where people want to spend their time, and in our opinion, it doesn’t get much cooler than that.”

A view of Melbourne, Australia—which is home to the coolest street in the world, according to Time ... [+] Out.

The United States was the country with the most streets on this list—five overall.

“The fact that an impressive five U.S. streets made this year’s list of the World’s Coolest Streets is a testament to the strong community resiliency found across America right now,” Will Gleason, Time Out’s content director of the Americas, told me in an interview. “While central business districts may still be adapting to the new normal of hybrid work, more residential and mixed-use areas are thriving thanks to independent stores, innovative restaurants and bars, social gathering spaces and green initiatives.”

What’s the top street in the United States? East Eleventh in Austin, Texas, where you’ll find food, culture, music and more. (It came in number three overall.)

“In Austin, there is no other street that captures the city’s spirit more than East Eleventh,” says Gleason. “Unlike other streets in the city, it’s not constantly vying for the spotlight but earns its beloved status among locals by packing every square inch with incredible food, excellent coffee, a historic venue and a backyard stage that evokes the bespoke approach Austinites take to keep the city’s soul alive.”

Austin, Texas, which is home to one of the coolest streets in the world and the coolest street in ... [+] the U.S. (hint—it's not pictured here).

New York City’s other Fifth Avenue—Fifth Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn—came in at number 13. “The ‘Other Fifth’ in NYC’s Park Slope ranks number 13 of Time Out’s Coolest Street right now, with the Barclays Center to its north and the Prospect Expressway to the south,” Shaye Weaver, editor of Time Out New York , told me in an interview. “This street has been quietly cool for a while, hiding behind its family-friendly reputation—but its regular community festivals, restaurants, shops and third spaces make it New York City’s coolest street this year.”

Other U.S. cities that made the list include Los Angeles (East Third Street came in at number 15), Chicago (18th Street was at number 21) and Miami (Miracle Mile, set in Coral Gables, was at number 26).

There were some big trends that Time Out spotted while compiling the list, according to Beard, including “vinyl and listening bars in lieu of nightclubs, old buildings repurposed into cultural hubs and probably more mentions of ‘natural wine’ than we’ve ever seen before.”

Another big trend: “What stands out to me the most is how outdoor dining and drinking has stuck around,” says Beard. “Open-air culture is no longer a temporary measure—it defines many of our coolest streets, particularly those that have been pedestrianized.”

Here, we’ve got Time Out’s list of the 30 coolest streets in the world, with a quick look at why they made the list and should be on every traveler’s radar. You can also go here to see Time Out’s full report on the world’s 30 coolest streets.

1. High Street - Melbourne, Australia

This year, High Street in Melbourne, Australia came out on top, thanks to its something-for-everyone vibe—think, vintage stores, cool cafes and more. But it’s not the first time a Melbourne street has landed on Time Out’s list. “Melburnians are spoiled for choice when it comes to well-trodden streets that deliver on food, culture and fun (both Smith Street and Gertrude Street have landed on this list in the past),” says Glynn. “This year, we’re shining the spotlight on this major artery that flows through the inner-north ’burbs of Thornbury, Northcote and Preston.”

Hollywood Road in Hong Kong—which was the second road to be built when the colony of Hong Kong was ... [+] founded, and is one of the coolest streets in the world.

2. Hollywood Road - Hong Kong

Hollywood Road is one of Hong Kong’s oldest streets, dating to 1844. It weaves through the Central and Sheung Wan districts and is home to the iconic Man Mo Temple, plus cool bars, restaurants and nightlife. “It pre-dates L.A.’s famous entertainment district—according to legend, the street likely got its name from the holly bushes that once lined its edges,” Tatum Ancheta, editor-in-chief of Time Out Hong Kong , wrote in the report. “But right now, it’s where all of the city’s coolest new venues are popping up.”

3. East Eleventh - Austin, Texas

East Eleventh is as cool as Austin itself, lined with great spots for food, culture, music and more. A few of the highlights: “You can buy locally designed dress boots ( Helm ); sample game-changing brisket ( Franklin Barbecue ); eat a bacon, egg and pimento cheeseburger at one of the best rooftop brunch spots ( Paperboy ); slide into a speakeasy ( Busy Signal ); enjoy a reading room with book and wine in hand ( Vintage Bookstore and Wine Bar ); or experience a band perform ( Kenny Dorham’s Backyard ),” says Gleason.

4. Guatemala Street - Buenos Aires, Argentina

“From humble origins to gourmet hub, this cobbled street sits at the heart of the historic Palermo Viejo, a formerly down-at-heel area that Jorge Luis Borges once called home,” Carolina Cerimedo, Buenos Aires-based Time Out contributor, wrote in the report.

Vancouver's Commercial Drive—the coolest streets in the world

5. Commercial Drive - Vancouver, Canada

“In a city of rapid change, Commercial Drive remains defiantly ungentrified,” Shawn Conner, Vancouver-based Time Out contributor, wrote in the report. “Like many other vibrant neighborhoods, the Drive is still suffering a post-2020 malaise—a street that once boasted five stages for live entertainment is now down to two—but it’s still the best hang-out-and-people-watch show in town.”

6. Jalan Petaling - Kuala Lumpur

“Jalan Petaling is one of Kuala Lumpur’s oldest streets, home to the city’s first Chinese settlers in the nineteenth century,” Ng Su Ann, Kuala Lumpur-based Time Out contributor, wrote in the report. “Over the last few years, it’s been experiencing a renaissance—you’ll find Kuala Lumpur’s oldest temples next door to colonial shophouses housing the newest dining and drinking joints.”

Chicago white sox | could the chicago white sox really move to nashville it’s complicated..

Chicago White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf pushed back last summer against rumors the team could abandon its South Side home for Nashville, but his December meeting with that city’s mayor kept the rumors alive. And some worry the team will eventually use a possible move as leverage in negotiations with Mayor Brandon Johnson, perhaps forcing the city to funnel scarce tax dollars into a new downtown stadium.

“We have too much evidence that sports stadiums don’t pay for themselves, and do not come anywhere close to it,” said Allen Sanderson, a senior professor at the University of Chicago who studies the economics of sports. “I’m not anti-sports, I’m a sports fan, but I am also an economist, and anti-wasting money. I’d rather the city spend money on things that don’t cost as much or on things it needs.”

Baseball owners have a lot of power to switch cities, and Nashville, one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the U.S., is at the top of Major League Baseball’s wish list as league officials eyeball possible sites to plant new teams. But it’s still not clear whether such a move would make sense for the White Sox if negotiations with Chicago officials fall apart, or if Nashville fans would prefer an entirely new team.

“Don’t hit the panic button yet,” said Michael Rapkoch, founder and CEO of Dallas-based Sports Value Consulting. “There is a lot that has to happen before a baseball team relocates. It’s not an easy solution.”

Sticking with Chicago is still the White Sox’s first option. In February, the White Sox and developer Related Midwest unveiled the design for a new stadium at The 78, a 62-acre planned development southeast of downtown along the Chicago River. The pair have held talks about the plan with officials from the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority, which owns Guaranteed Rate Field, the Sox’s current home in Bridgeport, completed in 1991.

Still unknown is how much a new Sox stadium would cost, and who pays for it. Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, baseball’s newest stadium, was completed in 2020 and cost more than $1 billion.

Both Johnson and Gov. J.B. Pritzker have said they’re skeptical about using any more public funds to finance sports stadiums, although Johnson didn’t rule it out. The sports facilities authority still owes $50 million on Guaranteed Rate Field, and $589 million on the 2002 renovation of Soldier Field, bonds largely to be repaid with a 2% city hotel tax.

Reinsdorf also told reporters in August he was not threatening to skip town with the team after news reports suggested it was a possibility. But he also did not explicitly rule out a move when the Sox’s Bridgeport lease runs out in 2029.

“I’ve been reading about (how) I’ve been threatening to move to Nashville,” he said. “That article didn’t come from me. But it’s obvious, if we have six years left, I think that’s what it is, we’ve got to decide what’s the future going to be. We’ll get to it, but I never threatened to move out.”

Reinsdorf met with Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell in December when MLB held its winter meeting in the city, but a team spokesperson declined to say what they discussed.

MLB owners must approve the relocation of any team, and such moves are rare. The Montreal Expos abandoned that city for Washington, D.C., in 2005, the first relocation in decades, after suffering low attendance and failing to secure funding for a new Montreal stadium. And late last year, owners unanimously approved a plan by Oakland Athletics managing partner and owner John Fisher to move his team by Opening Day 2028 from the aging Oakland Coliseum to a new ballpark in Las Vegas.

Rapkoch said Fisher’s decision made sense because the old Oakland ballpark, originally designed for both football and baseball, has poor sightlines for baseball fans. City officials and the team also could not reach an agreement to replace the Coliseum, while the Nevada legislature approved $380 million in public funds for a $1.5 billion, 30,000-seat stadium on the Las Vegas Strip.

MLB owners’ willingness to endorse Fisher’s Las Vegas gamble shows it might be difficult for any city to hold onto a team determined to leave, said Marc Ganis, president of industry consultant SportsCorp Ltd.

“Major League Baseball has demonstrated they will defer to an owner when it comes to relocation,” he said. “Jerry Reinsdorf has historically been one of the most active owners in baseball and for decades one of the most influential, so I would not expect under any circumstances MLB to save the team if he decided to move.”

(Scott Strazzante/San Francisco Chronicle)

Like the A’s, which share the Bay Area market with the San Francisco Giants, the White Sox share Chicago, which means baseball owners could greenlight a future Sox move and still keep baseball in one of the nation’s biggest markets.

“Would you move the Cubs to Nashville?” asked Rapkoch. “No way. The White Sox? Maybe. The brand is just not as strong as the Cubs, just like the Mets and the Yankees in New York.”

Nashville, already home to the National Football League’s Titans and the National Hockey League’s Predators, also seems likely to eventually land a major league baseball team. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in February he wants plans in place by 2029 to expand the league from 30 to 32 teams, and Nashville is garnering attention. According to a 2023 survey by The Athletic, 69% of players picked the city as their favorite site for a new team.

“Nashville is a market that is very strong, growing fast and has a lot of transplanted Chicagoans,” Ganis said.

But boosting the White Sox’s value could be challenging in a smaller market like Nashville.

The metro area’s population did grow 22% between 2010 and 2020, census figures show, one of the fastest growth rates in the U.S., but with 2.1 million people, it’s still dwarfed by the Chicago region’s 9.45 million. Forbes in 2023 valued the Tennessee Titans at $4.4 billion, compared with the Chicago Bears at $6.3 billion, and the Predators at $975 million versus nearly $1.9 billion for the Chicago Blackhawks.

And Nashville locals have their own plans for major league baseball. Real estate developer John Loar helped start Music City Baseball in 2019, an organization working to land one of baseball’s new expansion teams and name it the Nashville Stars, in tribute to a Negro Leagues-era baseball team. Loar attracted a who’s who of the local business and country music communities and brought the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum onboard as a partner.

Music City Baseball hopes to debut the Stars in the 2030s and is looking for investors and evaluating several possible stadium sites in the metro area.

“I embraced the notion that our new team would be named for Nashville’s historic Negro team,” said Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, who wants to build a satellite museum at any new stadium. “The business community has been very receptive to this idea, and I think it will help build up a diverse fan base, more reflective of our community, and bring urban children back to the game.”

If the Sox ever choose to leave Chicago, moving to Nashville might not come cheap, said Michael Keenan, PwC’s managing director and sports practice leader. The league will almost certainly demand a relocation fee, which could cost hundreds of millions or more.

“Sports leagues generally prefer teams to stay where they are,” he said. “Relocations are a last resort, so you don’t go down that route until you’ve exhausted everything to get a stadium built.”

The Titans secured $1.26 billion in public financing and will break ground this year on a new $2.1 billion home, leading many Nashville politicians to go sour on any potential new stadium, further complicating things for future team owners.

O’Connell “has made it clear in the past that publicly funding a stadium is not something he’s interested in pursuing,” said mayoral spokesperson Alex Apple.

“Our current vice mayor and mayor, both then council members, opposed the Titans deal and were elected to their current positions shortly thereafter,” said City Council member Quin Evans-Segall. “While Nashville is happy to be called home by many MLB players during their off seasons, mindful of these administration changes and current views on public funding of stadiums broadly, I would not think that there would be any public support for public financing for an additional new stadium at this time in Nashville.”

Keenan said such public opposition can be overcome. The state government in Nashville may still have an appetite to fund a future stadium. A savvy owner could also assemble a package of private sponsorship deals and stadium naming rights or attract private investment by building an entertainment district around a new stadium.

“It all comes down to what you can negotiate,” he said. “It’s more of an art than a science.”

Shohei Ohtani says he never gambled on sports

By Elise Hammond and Zoe Sottile, CNN

Ohtani says he only found out about his ex-interpreter's gambling during team meeting last week

Los Angeles Dodgers player Shohei Ohtani said he found out at a team meeting after the first game in South Korea last week that his former interpreter admitted to using money from his account to bet on sports.

Ohtani said Mizuhara, his former interpreter, was speaking English during that meeting. Though he didn’t understand exactly what was being said, Ohtani said he started to feel like “something was amiss.”

Before the meeting, Mizuhara told Ohtani that he wanted to talk to him in private after the meeting, according to Ohtani. Once they talked, that's when Ohtani said he found out about the debt.

“So up until that team meeting, I didn’t know that Ippei had a gambling addiction and was in debt," he said, through another interpreter on Monday. And obviously I never agreed to pay off the debt or to make payments to the bookmaker," he added.

This post has been updated with additional comments.

Ohtani says he "never bet on baseball"

Shohei Ohtani appears at a press conference on Monday, March 25.

Speaking for the first time since the scandal involving his interpreter broke out, Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani said Monday that he "never bet on baseball or any other sports, or...asked somebody to do it on my behalf."

He also denied going through a bookmaker to bet on sports.

He said that his interpreter, Ippei Mizuhura, "has been stealing money from my account and has told lies."

Ohtani says he is "very sad and shocked" about theft allegations against former interpreter

Addressing allegations that his former interpreter engaged in "massive theft," Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani said that he is "very sad and shocked that someone who I trust has done this."

Speaking to the media through another interpr4eson Monday, Ohtani acknowledged that it has been a tough week for fans and the team and thanked people for being patient.

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani is making a statement to the media as Major League Baseball investigates allegations of theft against his longtime interpreter.

He will not be taking questions, according to the team.

Will Ireton, a Dodgers employee, will serve as Ohtani’s interpreter, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.

Some background: The allegations came to light last week when Ohtani’s Japanese interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara,  was fired  after Ohtani’s lawyers accused him of “massive theft” of millions of dollars and placing bets with a bookmaker under federal investigation, according to  ESPN  and the  Los Angeles Times , which first reported the story.

Ohtani, who doesn’t speak often with reporters, has not spoken publicly since Mizuhara’s firing. The star two-way player signed an unparalleled  10-year, $700 million deal  with the Dodgers this offseason.

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani’s longtime Japanese interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara,  was fired  after Ohtani’s lawyers accused him of “massive theft” of millions of dollars and placing bets with a bookmaker under federal investigation, according to  ESPN  and the  Los Angeles Times , which first reported the story.

The scandal has threatened to overshadow the start of MLB’s Opening Day on Thursday, challenged the public’s understanding of one of baseball’s biggest stars, and brought renewed scrutiny to professional sports’ closeness with gambling.

An attorney for Mathew Bowyer, the former bookmaker under federal investigation related to gambling, said he never met or had “any direct contact” with Ohtani but did do business with Mizuhara.

“Mathew Bowyer never spoke with or emailed with or texted with or had any contact whatsoever with Shohei Ohtani,” the attorney, Diane Bass told CNN in an on-camera interview on Saturday.

The attorney also said Ohtani’s interpreter never bet on baseball.

The MLB and the Internal Revenue Service are separately investigating Mizuhara.

A day-by-day look at how the scandal surrounding Ohtani's Japanese interpreter unfolded

Ippei Mizuhara speaks during a press conference for the MLB opening game against the San Diego Padres in Seoul, South Korea on March 16.

Shohei Ohtani’s longtime Japanese interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara,  was fired  after Ohtani’s lawyers accused him of “massive theft” of millions of dollars and placing bets with a bookmaker under federal investigation, according to  ESPN  and the  Los Angeles Times , which first reported the story.

The saga began with reporters asking questions about alleged  wire transfers  from Ohtani’s bank account. Here’s how the scandal unfolded:

  • Mizuhara told ESPN in a Tuesday interview, arranged by Ohtani’s representative, he asked Ohtani last year to pay off his gambling debt, ESPN reported. Ohtani had no involvement in his betting, Mizuhara said.
  • But after the interview, Ohtani’s spokesperson “disavowed” Mizuhara’s account, then released a statement saying Ohtani had been the victim of theft.
  • On the same day, Mizuhara was seen smiling in the LA dugout and talking to Ohtani before translating for the star in the team’s  5-2 win  over the San Diego Padres in the MLB season-opening game in Seoul, South Korea, on Wednesday.
  • Later Wednesday, Mizuhara was fired as Ohtani’s interpreter.
  • After learning about the allegations against Ohtani and Mizuhara, MLB on Friday announced it would be pursuing an investigation. The IRS also confirmed it was investigating Mizuhara.

Baseball has a murky past with gambling

From CNN's Jacob Lev

A World Series game between the Chicago White Sox and the Cincinnati Reds is seen at Redland Field in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1919.

Baseball has a troubled history with gambling. The most famous – or infamous – incident is the "Black Sox Scandal."

During the 1919 World Series, the heavily-favored Chicago White Sox were stunned 5-3 in a best-of-9 series by the Cincinnati Reds. However, a year later, eight White Sox players were accused of conspiring with gamblers to lose the Fall Classic on purpose.

They were all acquitted in a 1921 trial but were banned for life from professional baseball by then-commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis.

Another involved MLB’s all-time hits leader Pete Rose, who received a lifetime ban from the sport in 1989 for betting on Cincinnati Reds games while he was a player/manager for the team.

Rose, whose ban makes him ineligible for election to baseball’s hall of fame, admitted in his 2004 autobiography he bet on baseball while Reds manager and, three years later, told ESPN Radio he bet on the Reds to win every night.

In 2023, Americans gambled a record $119.84 billion on sports, a 27.5% increase from the previous year, according to the American Gaming Association’s Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker.

How Ohtani became a baseball superstar

Shohei Ohtani looks on during a spring training game between the Los Angeles Angels and the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday, March 24, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese baseball phenom embroiled in a scandal involving allegations of theft against his former interpreter, has become one of the baseball world's biggest celebrities in the last years.

Ohtani, 29, was born in Mizusawa, Japan, and excelled at baseball starting in high school. After starting his professional career with Japan's Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in 2013, he switched to Major League Baseball in 2018 and joined the Los Angeles Angels.

In December, he made headlines when he signed on to the Los Angeles Dodgers with a historic 10-year, $700 million deal , one of the highest-paying contracts in the history of professional sports.

The athlete, who pitches and bats as a designated hitter, was unanimously voted the American League's Most Valuable Player in 2021. The same season, he also became the first player in American League or National League history with at least 45 homers, 25 stolen bases and five triples in a season.

In 2023, he was named MVP for a second time , making him the first player to ever unanimously win American League MVP twice.

His massive success on the diamond has also lent itself to highly-compensated advertising partnerships . Ohtani has more than a dozen partnerships around the world, generating at least $35 million in annual endorsement earnings, including with Boss (formerly Hugo Boss), Fanatics, and Seiko Watch, according to a tally from  Forbes .

The athlete underwent elbow surgery in the offseason and will not pitch again until 2025.

Shohei Ohtani will speak today as MLB investigates theft allegations against his interpreter

Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani is expected to address the media Monday as Major League Baseball investigates allegations of theft against his former interpreter.

“I’m happy he’s going to speak – speak to what he knows and give his thoughts on the whole situation,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters Sunday. “I think it’ll give us a little bit more clarity.”

Will Ireton, a Dodgers employee, will serve as Ohtani’s interpreter, Roberts said.

Ohtani’s longtime Japanese interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara,  was fired  after Ohtani’s lawyers accused him of “massive theft” of millions of dollars and placing bets with a bookmaker under federal investigation, according to  ESPN  and the  Los Angeles Times , which first reported the story.
