Mac DeMarco performing at Hackney Empire.

Mac DeMarco review – an atypical celebration of an atypical album

(Hackney Empire, London) Moving on from his sad-clown antics with a beguiling set of instrumentals and fan faves, strung together by Tom Waitsy banter, DeMarco is a magnetic performer

T he last time I saw Mac DeMarco live he jammed a lit cigarette in his ear, climbed on top of an amp with his boxers bunched into his arse crack and lit his armpit hair on fire. That was a few years ago – before the pandemic, before DeMarco quit smoking, and before a solo road trip around the US and Canada would reconfigure his approach to writing and performing music.

The result was Five Easy Hot Dogs: 14 minimal yet addictive instrumental tracks written and recorded on the road, and announced just two weeks before its release in January. In that spirit, Mac’s current tour is an atypical celebration of an atypical album.

Magnetic … Mac DeMarco.

It’s a show of two halves: a full run-through of Five Easy Hot Dogs, followed by another 90 minutes of deep cuts and fan favourites. Performing on a stool, MTV Unplugged style, the intimate setting lays bare Mac’s strengths. His voice sounds almost crooner-like on love songs For the First Time and My Kind of Woman, while the stripped-back arrangement puts the onus on rhythm and banter. DeMarco makes up for the lack of singalongs during the first half by guiding the audience on a journey from song to song, place to place, through off the cuff anecdotes, character impressions and local tourist information – like Tom Waits if he had a show on Adult Swim. Before Crescent City, he identifies a change in temperament when you cross the border from California into Oregon (“more methamphetamine up there”); introducing Edmonton – the oil capital of Canada – he puts on a Daniel Plainview voice and addresses the dangers of fracking.

While the gig’s format might seem experimental for an artist revered for live-fast tendencies and a sad clown persona, the result is refreshing and magnetic, proving he doesn’t need the chaos of his earlier years to hold a room. He might be making dick jokes in a baseball cap, but he’s easily one of the best old school entertainers we have.

TUNED UP

By Samantha Skapin

Photos and words by Samantha Skapin

Last week, I had the insane pleasure to check out Mac DeMarco for his sold out show at the House of Blues in Cleveland. He had great support from the duo Tonstartssbandht.

Tonstartssbandht opened the show to the extremely packed venue. The duo consists of Andy White (guitarist for Mac DeMarco) and his brother, Edwin White. I hadn’t heard of these guys before the show, but since they were opening for Mac, I knew they were going to be great. They played quite a bit off of their newest release  Sorcerer,  such as “ Breathe ” and “Opening”. The songs are quite lengthy, which made a lot of time to watch the incredible Andy and Edwin White jam out as Andy danced around the stage barefoot. The crowd at the House of Blues seemed to love these guys too, erupting in cheering after each song was finished. If you get a chance to check out one of these sold out shows on this run, make sure to get there early to check out Tonstartssbandht, because you won’t be disappointed. Make sure to check out the duo’s newest release  Sorcerer   as well!

After what seemed like the longest soundcheck of the anxious crowd’s life, Mac DeMarco, the Viceroy  man himself, came out to the stage with his band members. I hate to be bias, but I am a huge DeMarco fan, so I was excited to finally see him live and at a SOLD OUT SHOW nonetheless. Mac has had an incredible couple of months, with a a great set at Coachella , the start of a massive tour, and the release of his new album,  This Old Dog  in May. Mac DeMarco gave a wave to the crowd, and went right into his first song, “ Salad Days ” from his 2014 album  Salad Days.  To say he and his band put on a great show would be an under statement. Mac sounds as crisp as he does on his records, and with the new addition of Alec Meen playing some incredible piano parts on songs such as “ Dreams From Yesterday “, you can’t go wrong. DeMarco played songs spanning his entire music career such as “No Other Heart”, “My Kind of Women”, and of course one of his most popular songs, “ Ode to Viceroy ” from his album 2 . The crowd was energetic the entire show, never missing a single lyric to shout right back to the band. They ended the show with his outro for most of his shows, “ Still Together ” off of  2.  The song dedicated to his girlfriend Kiera, has always been one of my favorites and seeing them perform it live with the crazy antics the band does during this song was absolutely incredible. Like I said, I’m pretty bias, but check out Mac DeMarco if you EVER have the chance to live because he and his band put on such a great show. Make sure to check out his new album  This Old Dog , because it’s one of his best to date.

Cool music. cool city., concert review: mac demarco keeping austin weird.

by Dan Radin

Mac DeMarco T-rex stomped onto the stage in the backyard of the Long Center.    “Smile upon your neighbor.    Keep it respectful.    Keep it hydrated,” DeMarco called out to the packed lawn.    Then, in traditional Austin fashion, he put on an absolute clinic of weird.

16-Mac Demarco

As the sun set, DeMarco turned around to look at the Austin skyline.    “Look at all those buildings back there, what the f*ckkkkkkk,” the singer mused, outstretched finger pointed at the Google building. “That one’s got a big G on it.    What’s that, Good Bar? Garbanzo?… OK, what the f*ck should we play next?”

17

When DeMarco asked the hesitant crowd to pull out their phones and flashlights, his quick-shot guitarist roused the laughs. “What, your battery’s dying? Your mom’s calling? You need your booty call? You up? You up? What’s up? You need a Lime later?”    The show progressed, and DeMarco continued to punish the replenished bottle of liquor.

The evening culminated in a smorgasbord jam where the opening act, shimmery surf-rock Bane’s World, came back to support DeMarco’s band on percussion. In the 25-minute jam, the drunk musicians went on to all continuously switch their instruments, put hats on one another, strip and toss shirts, make a call-and-response with the crowd about turkey sandwiches, chain smoke, do handstands, make fart noises in the mic, pull up the sound guy to play guitar, rip shots, take off shoes and clap overhead.    DeMarco took a stint on the drum set, then literally laid down on stage for ten minutes while his band continued without him.

See all our concert photos from the show.

The mayhem concluded when the band launched into “Sharp Dressed Man.”    DeMarco rose from the dead, cigarette in mouth, into a blistering guitar solo.    It got the confused crowd back in the show, just in time for curfew.

DeMarco and crew’s zaniness scored memories for everyone in attendance.    Crazy, fun, and unabashedly themselves; I’d for SURE go see them again.

With the release of new album “Here Comes the Cowboy,” DeMarco stops in Sacramento as part of North American tour

Last week, half of the Arts and Culture Desk saw Mac DeMarco perform at Ace of Spades in Sacramento, Calif. Here are our thoughts.

Liz Jacobson:

I’ve seen a lot of great concerts this year, but Mac DeMarco’s concert is easily a contender for the best. His charisma and personality made me blush. He is definitely someone I would want as my beer die partner. So comfortable on stage in his gym shorts and cowboy hat, as he grinned ear-to-ear; I swayed with my friends to his “jizz jazz” style music and Bob Dylan-like voice. “My Kind of Woman” was everything I wanted it to be and more. While the band’s dynamic was interesting (Mac DeMarco often took the backseat to his bandmates’ antics), his passion for his music radiated. Mac DeMarco ended the show by having the entire crowd sit down so he could sing us a lullaby, “Watching him Fade Away.”

Clay Allen Rogers:

The Good: After Mac Demarco and friends performed a series of classic hits from “Salad Days,” “This Old Dog” and “Another One,” he broke out the haggard cowboy hat and hit some funky-country jams from his new album “Here Comes the Cowboy.” After his performance, he disappeared backstage for about 10 minutes until he responded to the crowds chants (“ENCORE! ENCORE!”) by turning the lights low, commanding everybody to “sit down and be calm” and performing “Watching him Fade Away,” a sentimental piece about a fading father and son relationship.

The Bad: Getting denied access to the bar because I picked up an empty beer can on the street and threw it away in the recycling bin outside of Ace of Spades. According to the arbiter at the door, those are the signs of pregaming. Thanks guy, I’ll stick to the psychedelics.

The Ugly: The Jimmy Page lookalike hitting a five-minute, one-note guitar solo that raised the hands of the crowd up and over their ears. Please send a memo: on a 24-fret guitar, there are a total of 49 notes.

Caroline Rutten:

Mac Demarco’s stage presence was beautiful, displaying both his total goofball personality and infectious charisma in perfect coexistence. I banged my head as much as I hugged my close friends around me; watching “My Kind of Woman” performed live will stay with me for a while. Also, his long-hair, barefoot electric guitarist was a show in his own right. And my future husband.

Rosie Schwarz:

Mac Demarco’s performance at the Ace of Spades was the best show I have been to at that venue because of the sound, energy and audience. As someone who just released an album, DeMarco could have focused only on his new songs; instead he chose to play a long, expansive set which ranged from fan favorites to songs that had been released just a few days prior to the show. Everyone was entranced by DeMarco’s goofy yet passionate stage presence and catchy music, and once the show ended, everyone was still in awe by the incredible performance they had witnessed.

Concert Review: Mac DeMarco

Concert Review: Mac DeMarco

On a cold December 4th in San Diego, hundreds of hipsters crowded together in Little Italy’s three-storied Music Box to see Mac DeMarco, a name that is ubiquitous among indie fans. The gap-toothed Canadian artist known for his sleepy brand of lo-fi indie concluded his three-week solo tour with a marathon 20-song set that featured tunes from his entire discography.

I say “marathon,” but anyone familiar with DeMarco’s work knows that he’s never really in a hurry, musically. His signature style is a sauntering introspection that doesn’t rush to the point. He’s most definitely not a punk artist or overly energetic. This attitude was persistent in the entirety of his show.

The concert was front-loaded with crowd pleasers “Salad Days,” “Still Beating,” and “This Old Dog,” to which a good majority of the crowd responded enthusiastically. The bulk of the set, however, was spent pulling out oldies and rarities that dyed-in-the-wool fans would appreciate.

Each song was introduced with an anecdote about the circumstances that influenced its inspiration. DeMarco regaled stories about past tours, living in Montreal, defrauding a community center, and the untimely death of a cat he was supposed to watch for a friend. For other songs, such as between “Treat Her Better” and “One Another,” DeMarco popped a pimple on his face, and talked about YouTube videos of people removing their ingrown toenails, which had absolutely nothing to do with the songs. Even DeMarco observed at one point, “The banter is very strange tonight.”

On songs like “Ode to Viceroy,” the crowd cheerfully sang the guitar solos in the absence of a lead guitar player. Mac yodeled and sang falsetto for other notable instrumental fills. These human substitutes for instruments gave a more stripped back and intimate attitude to the songs, which fit the atmosphere well.

The stage was littered with the kind of things you would find at a garage sale in the suburbs: giant plastic Christmas candle lights, an old-school globe, various busts, a Kool cigarettes storefront sign, a moon-shaped lamp, and an obnoxiously loud Halloween animatronic that would decapitate itself. Set before a Party City disco ball and a projector screen displaying a loop of slo-mo aerial footage taken at sunset, this was the kind of low-budget, tongue-in-cheek aesthetic that DeMarco is known for.

In the middle of “Annie,” the moon lamp that was suspended over the projector screen fell to the stage floor with a disruptive clunk. DeMarco, without missing a beat, turned around to see what had happened, then lamented “Oh, my moon! I got that f—-er at CVS!”

A stagehand promptly replaced the lamp to its perch to enthusiastic cheers from the audience. At the conclusion of the song, DeMarco began a story about his various stage props malfunctioning on tour, before realizing one of the Christmas candles went dim.

“What the f—, the candles out, too!”

DeMarco closed the night with “Still Together.” Despite having endured a nearly two-hour set of slow, stripped-down songs, the crowd loudly and energetically cajoled him back on stage for an encore. DeMarco, in a pantomimed reluctance, played an abbreviated rendition of “Watching Him Fade Away” on the keyboard before pronouncing, “Bye bye for real,” dropping the mic, and sprinting offstage.

Part prop-comedy, part VH1 Storytellers and laced with burps and poop jokes, DeMarco’s solo set was distinctly reminiscent of an unassuming kickback with your stoner friends. Unusually more intimate than his full band shows, the set still feels familiar. It was decidedly goofy, but nothing felt out of place or artificial. Everything about his set, from the banter to the stage decor, felt genuine and on-brand. Mac DeMarco is one of the more self-aware artists of the indie genre.

RX Music Concert Review | Mac Demarco

If Mac Demarco’s reputation as indie’s chilliest bad boy has overshadowed his latest LP, Here Comes the Cowboy , Demarco’s set at RBC Echo Beach on Tuesday complicated matters further and in mesmerizing fashion. The disparity between Demarco’s defining tropes, his sedately languid spaghetti guitar and normcore persona, and his notoriously immature onstage antics has served as a focal point of his draw for seven years now, and his current set maximizes and widens that distance considerably.

Demarco’s modus operandi of the past three years has undeniably been to slow things down; the drinking is lighter, the interviews more meditative, and the albums quieter. Where Mac’s occasionally frustrating recent interest in minimal, downtempo arrangements sometimes falls somewhere short of the reach on record, however, his dedication to the project in the live setting lends a surprising defiance to his already effortless cool. At a mature 29 years of age, Demarco seems bent on defying and subverting his fans’ thirst for the electric Slip N’ Slide of 2014’s generation-defining Salad Days , choosing instead to showcase his very slowest and unassuming output.

Rather than falling flat as an indulgent and misjudged overestimation of his audience’s patience, though, Demarco and company lulled the crowd into beautiful submission over nearly two hours of pristine, elegantly restrained musicianship. Bar the odd crowd-pleaser – the early-set jolt of ‘Salad Days,’ the cathartic sleaze of ‘Ode to Viceroy,’ and the innocent waggishness of ‘Rock and Roll Night Club’ – Mac and company remained steadfastly faithful to the hushed study in simplicity of Here Comes the Cowboy. Demarco’s devotees noticeably mirrored the pace, prompting the inimitably mellow messiah to comment, “you guys are mellow, I like that.”

It was Demarco’s banter between songs that highlighted just how central humor is to the set. Heightened by a palpable chemistry with guitarist Andy White, all the ironies, antics, handstands, summersaults, and rapid-fire quips revealed themselves as fundamental to the Mac Demarco experience. An extended encore consisting of a seemingly endless crotch-rock guitar solo followed by a surreal medley of Kansas, Herman’s Hermits-gone-punk, Misfits, and Metallica covers ended the set with side-splittingly off-brand self-indulgence, further convincing devotees of Mac’s paradoxical torch-singer-cum-slapstick-comic status.

In a final act of defiance, Demarco tossed his stand-in rental Stratocaster into the mass of tamed fans; he had broken his own, his favourite, the night before. Now seemingly at peace with the prospect of moving forward without the favoured weapon of his twenties, a wiser Mac Demarco bid farewell to his mellow army. He was mellow too, and we liked that.

Four Black Music Documentaries You Should Watch

SURG FM

Concert Review: Mac Demarco @ The Hordern Pavilion

With his signature ‘Ed Sheeran gone sleazy-yet-sultry’ charm, indie stalwart Mac DeMarco delivered a veritable tour-de-force of his discography to a sold-out Hordern Pavilion crowd of 5,500.

Having been heralded as the “loveable prince of indie rock” and producing a documentary short about himself entitled ‘Pepperoni Playboy’, Mac DeMarco’s stonerish personality certainly precedes him. Yet, owing to the throng of corduroy-wearing, tote bag-carrying, ratty-haired fans, it became quickly apparent that the charm and laid-back style of the twenty-nine-year-old musician remains as potent and real as ever nearing a decade into his prolific career.

However, before DeMarco and his merry band of Brooklyn hipster types were to take the stage, it was time for the first opening act, CHAI, to energise the accumulating crowd. Donning identical pink leotards and pigtails, the Japanese quartet blasted through their setlist with peppy aggression. Although the mixing of their instruments occasionally left the synth parts of many songs sounding murky and the bass, at times, indistinguishable, their performance capability and genuine enthusiasm shone through a lack of distinguishable sonic layers. A short half-hour later, the second opening act Pond settled into the stage like it was their natural habitat, with lead singer Nick Allbrook gallivanting through the performance with an unhinged and animated swagger. Featuring several members of seminal Australian band Tame Impala’s live ensemble, the Western Australian band brought the noise with a tight dynamism and just the right amount of crowd surfing between them, hitting peak groove with a cover of Madonna’s ‘Ray of Light’.

With the crowd primed and already amply drenched in sweat. DeMarco emerged onto stage with thunderous applause he had yet to earn but already more than deserved. Sporting a bucket hat and a newly-grown moustache, he looked 29 going on 40 but loving every minute of it. Getting the crowd swaying with ‘On the Level’, a popular track from his 2017 album  This Old Dog , DeMarco dived cooly into a lengthy setlist. Particular highlights of the performance included ‘Nobody’ and ‘Choo Choo’ from 2019’s  Here Comes The Cowboy;  although the latter track is often credited as a weak point in the tepidly-received album, it was substantially enlivened with a funky rearrangement and an impressive solo from Mac’s pianist. Every three to four songs was marked by witty repartee that DeMarco and his lead guitarist maintained with the crowd. A venue-wide chant of “Fuck ScoMo” was met with smiles of nervous amusement from DeMarco onstage, who then proceeded to do drink a ceremonial shoey at the raucous insistence of the audience.

Effortless engagement in crass humour and charm in equal measure is something that seems to come naturally to DeMarco, allowing him to perform songs about his strained relationship with his father (‘My Old Man’) and lament his favourite brand of cigarettes (‘Ode to Viceroy’) in quick succession whilst never diminishing the appeal of his performance. On the way to concluding the set with a note-perfect extended rendition of Metallica’s ‘Enter Sandman’, DeMarco pounded out further classics of his own such as ‘Freaking Out the Neighborhood’ and ‘Chamber of Reflection’, both emblematic of his signature jangly sound that he’s previously described as ‘jizz-jazz’. Besides consistently teasing the crowd with excerpts of AC/DC’s perennial ‘Thunderstruck’ that never came to full fruition, Mac Demarco’s performance was a joyous and stimulating experience, enough to drive various audience members to hurl cowboy hats onstage or furiously demand he notices their hand-drawn fan art.

Mac Demarco

8th january 2020 the town hall, auckland, new zealand..

Review by Ali Nicholls . Photography by Connor Crawford .

Bedroom indie-rock icon and hero of lazy Saturday afternoons Mac Demarco invites Auckland to celebrate life, love, and good times at the Town Hall, kicking off his international tour with a glowing start.

“Make yourselves at home, smile upon your neighbour, and have a good time.”

Mac Demarco’s opening sentiments in the inaugural show of his latest international tour at the town hall may sound humble but ask any burgeoning musician and they will tell you that either you take the crowd, or the crowd takes you. Luckily for the near sold out show that welcomed him to kiwi shores for the third time, Mac Demarco is the master of good vibes and this time around was no exception.

The tour comes off the back of the release of his fourth album, Here Comes the Cowboy which was met with mixed opinions. Since his initial release, the evolution of Mac’s sound has largely come in the production stages. He’s always been a hero to the cruisers, but his latest album was met with some critique. There’s an impending risk that his evermore laidback sound is holding him back, and critics marked that the sound seemed a bit tired and overworked. But through his live performance we see the music spanning Mac’s career come to life, rejuvenated by his playfully cheesy presence and charismatic band.

We’re introduced to Mac by the thundering sound of the Star Wars empire theme. Immediately we know the tone of the evening – above all, we’re here to shake off some of the seriousness of life and have a good time. Before any musical preamble, Mac introduces his band mates by first name; a gesture which seems like a natural follow-up to his ironic entrance number. The set opens with ‘On the Level’, and the crowd is already warmed up to sing along with him. The acoustic set up is really nicely balanced. He uses the town hall without pretence, grooving around its chamber acoustics with a nonchalance that allows his bedroom rock sound to settle right.

Immediately we see him sliding and leaping around the stage, twirling and flinging his microphone around his baggy t-shirt and sneans combo. ‘Salad Days’ lifts the crowd yet again, with the whole track being echoed back to the band. They’re in their element here, playing with the songs rather than simply rattling them out. And although they’re clearly not taking themselves too seriously, there is a serious respect in there for the sound. Mac Demarco has become an icon for a reason, and tonight the band is delivering not only the songs we’ve grown to love, but also the lifestyle and presence that blossoms from them.

We step away from the upbeat tracks and into Mac’s more romantic material for a while. Some Paul Simon-esque synths warm up the room, and intimacy blossoms from a hyperactive crowd. He brings people in and out of the subtle shifts of these emotions with ease. While it’s doesn’t necessarily seem meticulously done, it feels very natural thanks to his skilled showmanship. The major 7ths roll off the Roland Juno 60 keys with a perfectly refined bootleg synth sound.

Our first glimpse into the raucous calamity of a Mac set comes right after a samba-jazz inspired rendering of ‘My Old Man’ with a punching rendition of one of his newer numbers, ‘Choo Choo’. Beneath the king-of-chill exterior there are pops of energy that fly out throughout Mac’s performance. His sporadic outbursts of physical and vocal enthusiasm are just as crucial to his performance as his languidity. In fact, throughout the set they seem to feed each other. Regardless of whether he’s floating in his dreamy, soupy stoner tunes or screeching through his rock n rollers, he’s giving it his all.

‘Viceroy’ brings us back to the classics. This track lends one of the only hints of tonight that Mac is on the cusp of leaving his younger tracks behind. He’s able to play with it to some extent, but he knows his audience well and he knows that this track is sacred, so he’s got to play a version of it that’s reasonably true to the record. For that reason, it feels as though he’s less free within it, less energised. He’s still performing it beautifully, and the crowd is adoring it, but you can sense that he’s itching to play.

Mac dishes out a new number that ‘may be released, maybe not’ simply called ‘I Like Her’. There’s something about the simplicity of the track that perfectly encapsulates Mac’s entire attitude to his sound – it’s skilled, it’s thoughtful, but there are no frills. It’s emotional, it’s sensitive, but it’s not intense. He appreciates the simple things, and with song writing this evocative, there’s no need to dress it up.

‘Freaking Out the Neighbourhood’ goes off like a fire cracker, and three false finishes keep the crowd anticipating. The energy in the room is so excitable it could combust. But he’s a master of the crowd, and he hurls us into a boisterous jam of ‘Rock and Roll Night Club’. His satirical style is perfectly balanced with his welcoming aura. We’re in on the joke, and it’s always held with the utmost affection.

‘My Kind of Woman’ gives the crowd a chance to ease back into his relaxed vibe before he throws us off again, this time with a playfully anti-authoritarian deliverance guitar breakdown over rolling civil war drum triplets. Andy, his guitarist and synth man, comes in on guitar underneath Mac announcing: “Ladies and gentlemen, we are Weezer.” The jam starts to disintegrate into discordant chaos as the crowd’s laughter peels through the hall. The band brings it back to the height of the party with a second rip of ‘Freaking Out the Neighbourhood’.

‘Chamber of Reflection’ closes the main set, the entirety of which seems to have been delivered with the reckless passion of someone belting out karaoke in an empty bar at 3am on a Wednesday. It’s unruly and sometimes ungraceful, but completely authentic. The show closes and Mac says goodbye. Some of the crowd starts to filter out but the main body of the audience is having none of it, and calls of ‘one more song’ shake the walls of the town hall. Before long, the band is back, and they have one more trick up their sleeve.

Mac thanks the audience one more time and offers ‘Blue Boy’ to the crowd. There’s a collecting sigh of happiness. Mac gently counts the band in, but instead of the dulcet tones of another Mac classic, the atmosphere rips open with ‘Enter Sandman’. It’s the song the band’s been itching to play all night. You can tell that alongside the gentile, soft psych-rock character there’s a band of charged up youth-driven metal loving boys who just want to get up there and tear the stage to pieces. And the crowd is giving them everything they want, with the ground floor of the town hall turning into a sea of moshing heads with the first riff. They close the set, Mac says his farewells, and the crowd heads home carrying the same reckless love with them that Mac brought along for them.

We should expect good things from Mac Demarco in the future. This tour may well be the last of its kind for him, and a part of me hopes it is. His eagerness to let rip and follow a new direction is tangible. Whatever that looks like, he’s fostered an international family who will be there to find out. But for now, fans the world over can be assured that his live presence still has so much to offer.

Make sure you get a taste while you still can.

Mac DeMarco on fame and why he indulged on a 199-song album

Some two weeks after Mac DeMarco surprised critics and fans with a new 199-song album, the indie rocker opened up in an interview with The Associated Press about why he decided to do it. He says “One Wayne G” is a deeply personal project — a self-portrait of sorts — and one that he felt would enable him to move forward with making new music.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Often dubbed the prince of indie music, Mac DeMarco has built a devoted fanbase through his mix of distinct slacker rock and being unafraid to show off his endearingly offbeat personality.

His latest release — a nine-hour, 199-song album — has confounded and stunned fans and critics alike. But for DeMarco, it was a way to reach his next creative phase.

“If I’m going to write something, I need to move forward,” he said in a recent interview, his first since his opus, “One Wayne G,” was released. “I like this stuff. I’d like to share it. I don’t really know how. I might as well just give it all at the same time.”

The album is a window into DeMarco’s creative process, as well as his extensive range as an artist. He drew the cover art himself as a finishing touch to the personal project. “It’s a self-portrait. And that’s essentially what ‘One Wayne G’ is, you know, five years of me,” he said.

The album arrived roughly three months after “Five Easy Hot Dogs,” a collection of instrumental songs he recorded during a road trip and is particularly proud of.

But more than just a way to get unreleased and some seemingly unfinished songs off his chest, the 33-year-old saw “One Wayne G” as an opportunity to subvert expectations of what releasing an album nowadays should look like.

“People are making music for TikTok or really short songs and there’s like 9,000 writers on a pop song. It’s very single-driven. So, I was like, ‘Well, I’m going to put out like nine hours and most of it won’t have song titles. It will just have dates,’” he recalled.

The scope of the album is daunting, but listeners have found rewards in all those tracks. Paste Magazine summed it up: “There’s a Tender Album Hidden Inside Mac DeMarco’s One Wayne G, But It’ll Take You Nine Hours to Find It.”

DeMarco made a name for himself as a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known for his laid-back style of music. He has become synonymous with his DIY-ethos and his proselytization of analog recording methods.

He showed up for his interview with The Associated Press in the most unfussy way possible. Missing were the combination of publicists, managers and hair and makeup people that often trail stars to interviews.

Instead, DeMarco rode his motorcycle to downtown Los Angeles from his home a few miles away, sporting a solid blue hoodie with his keys and a keychain which reads “Millionaire in Training” hanging around his neck.

And while DeMarco was confused by the question about his missing entourage, the musician conceded that he has reached a surprising level of fame.

He built a steady following after he released his second full-length studio album, “Salad Days,” but said he doesn’t feel pressure to recreate the same kind of sound that led to his ascent. “There are a lot of people that want me to just make ‘Salad Days’ over and over and over again,” he said. “But that was a certain period.

“I’ve made a bunch of records that have made me enough money to live comfortably and like, I’m in a position where I can make the art that I want to make,” he said. “I don’t know, I just enjoy —I love music. Music is cool.”

DeMarco likes to segment his music into periods. “Five Easy Hot Dogs” emerged from a road trip that he said would only end once he finished the album.

“It all feels like it’s just so encapsulated. It’s kind of like, ‘This is a period in time. This is where it was made. This is where it was mixed. This is the vibe.’ And you know, for me, I like that,” he said. “People can take it however they want, but it was an important period in my life.”

He plans to make his next album the same way, except this time on his motorcycle. Asked how that would work, he grinned, as if having a plan up his sleeve, and replied, “I’ll figure it out.”

In addition to music, DeMarco has gained a reputation for some offbeat antics.

There’s the time he was beaten and tied up on “The Eric Andre Show,” or the time he brought Nathan Fielder on stage at his Los Angeles concert and the pair kissed, something DeMarco didn’t remember. Or one might come across his “ Advanced Studio Recording Techniques ,” a series of insightful but mostly absurd videos, during which his face is inexplicably doused in Vaseline.

“It was fun at first, but then, especially the longer my hair is, the worse it is getting the Vaseline off,” he recalled. “It doesn’t matter how much shampoo you use. You have it in there for about a week.”

Although his irreverent attitude is still very much intact, the Canadian musician appears to have matured and mellowed with age. He has cut out caffeine and alcohol, regularly sees an acupuncturist and quit smoking a year ago while on his “Five Easy Hot Dogs” road trip.

“I don’t like being beholden to things like that, you know? As humans, we got to have water, you got to have shelter, you got to have food. That’s enough things to be trapped by,” he said of his spartan lifestyle.

But DeMarco still enjoys a good prank. After “One Wayne G” dropped, his record label teased a physical release of the 199 songs on social media, something fans will be disappointed to discover is not going to happen.

“We had these fake mock-ups of a vinyl and a cassette and it’s just like, it’s not going to fit. I’m sorry,” he laughed.

The world’s favorite Canadian wild-child Mac Demarco continues to win over fans with his touching songwriting and enigmatic off-stage personality. Known for his laid-back energy and image, DeMarco easily appeals to the younger generation.

His relatable lyrics and unique musical sound top off his persona, making him a must-listen artist in the indie-rock genre.

DeMarco’s talents began at a young age. Living in small-town Canada allowed him to dedicate time to his growing love for music, including learning to play guitar. During high school, he joined several bands and honed his skills alongside his fellow bandmates. After graduation, DeMarco moved to Vancouver and kick-started his music career in earnest.

His rise to fame wasn’t a quick one. DeMarco worked hard to make it as a standout solo artist, releasing a variety of self-produced mixtapes, albums, and songs. Eventually, his devotion paid off when independent record label Captured Tracks offered him a deal in 2012. After signing, Demarco released the LP Rock and Roll Night Club and his debut studio album, 2. His signature sound invaded many new listeners’ playlists and paved the way for his breakthrough sophomore album Salad Days in 2014.

Tracks like “Passing Out Pieces” and “Brother” showcased DeMarco’s eccentric slacker-rock aura. By combining psychedelic and lo-fi beats, the singer-songwriter set himself apart from the usual popstars. Salad Days received stellar reviews and reached impressive heights on the U.S. charts. New fans recognized the artist’s original yet old-school take on indie-rock. Sprinkling in his knack for coming-of-age lyrics, the album became a top contender for some of the best new music in 2014. The success of Salad Days proved DeMarco was more than the everyday rocker.

The artist naturally radiated similar chill vibes during his later releases. As greats like Steely Dan, Harry Nilsson, or Prince had, DeMarco dropped Another One almost one year to the date after the meteorically successful Salad Days. Conceived and recorded entirely by himself between a relentless tour schedule at his new place in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York, Another One featured eight freshly-written songs and expanded DeMarco’s impeccable catalog.

The haunting and warm tracks of Another One delved into the bittersweet, romantic idea of lost love without subjecting listeners to an overly somber experience. Despite the album’s more refined and sophisticated sound, Another One stuck to DeMarco’s staple rock touch and playful roots while retaining the guts and soul of classic Mac.

This Old Dog and Here Comes the Cowboy carried DeMarco from 2017 to 2020. The albums expanded his record collection, securing his spot as an in-demand artist. He backed up every song with his usual persona while offering a fresh take on slow, subtle soft rock.

DeMarco supported his steady rise with must-see tours and music festival appearances at Outside Lands, Shaky Knees, and Coachella. In addition, he raised his pop culture status with late-night television performances on Conan, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. DeMarco showed no signs of stopping as he took the stage and stayed true to his casual rocker look.

With his subsequent studio album releases, DeMarco redefined indie. Retro elements and synth-inspired beats breathed new life into the genre. Today, the artist’s star power is just as prominent as his Salad Days era. Thanks to social media apps like TikTok, his new and old tracks often achieve viral status. Ultimately, his one-of-a-kind energy brings together millions of fans in fresh and exciting ways.

Luckily, his reign isn’t over yet. DeMarco recently wrapped up a world tour spanning Europe, Asia, and the US. Despite numerous canceled dates, DeMarco reassured fans he was diligently working on his upcoming LP. With more time dedicated to polishing his latest project, the singer-songwriter will undoubtedly come back better than ever. Loyal listeners are ready to indulge in the newest addition to DeMarco’s dream-worthy discography.

Live reviews

MAC DEMARCO, it's a name whose personality NEEDS to be written (and said) in ALL CAPS. If there's one thing you can expect it's entertainment. The rawest, realest form of entertainment. Mac does this immediately by managing to make the entre crowd feel at ease, at home. His show went from feeling like, well, a SHOW into a full throttle family reunion. I cannot stress the factor of "family" enough. I am now writing this in the afternoon the day after and I can still feel the goosebumps from his high trembling voice at "Still Together" which was more impactful when, before he ended the song, said "Alright, babies, maybe one more chorus. If you havent felt nothing all night, here's your shot to feel something. Are you ready?..." I can still feel the water in my eyes from when he screamed, the chorus of "My Kind of Woman" I wish I could write about his music and just the brutally honest form it takes on when he performs live BUT this review is about more than that. The stage banter between Mac, The Bassist (I feel horrible for not knowing his name but the relationship between him and Mac is something beautiful, they are always on the same page and goddamn they are funny) and the audience is what sold the show for me. Mac and Pierce McGarry (! I had to ask who the bassist was) are just the funniest mf'ers ever. I was part of an improv comedy team at one point and Mac and Pierce are guys I'd love to have on my team (After playing Ode to Viceroy <3 Pierce: What was the name of that song? Mac (in deep seductive voice): the name of that ditty was- Cigarette Song") The stage banter was amazing. At one point Mac was counting how many dudes there were at the show "3..4..i think youre a dude...7..9.. ugh yeah youre not a dude..." They are just pure entertainment. Imagine vaudeville acts who were supposed to be funny, sad, tragic just pure entertainment. MEMORABLE MOMENT (the most insane out of all ie. Mac spitting water at crowd, Mac stagediving, and much more etc) The encore was a motherf*cking NEIL YOUNG song!! Mac had all of the opening bands (Holy Shit, Meatbodies, Calving Love) and their respective family come on stage and KNEEL FOR NEIL. MAC MADE THE ENTIRE FONDA THEATRE NEIL FOR KNEEL. AND WE ALL SANG UNKNOWN LEGEND AND GODDAMN THATS WHAT LIVE MUSIC IS ALL ABOUT *SALUTES*

I love Mac Demarco! He has a great presence and plays really great live! I have one problem though, some of his fans. We waited 3 hours in the rain outside the venue hoping to get front row and see Mac up close and personal for the first time. We met some really nice people and I was overall pleased with those around us at first. We got in and got second row, right in the middle and were so so excited!! As soon as he came out guys from the back who DEFINITELY did not wait 3 hours to get those spots started 'moshing'. Not metal show moshing, it was a literal shoving pit with no regard for girls or people who didn't want to mosh. I had very respectful people behind me, but my friend, got groped by some guy probably blitzed out of his mind on coke or something. She was near tears when we finally got out and I felt absolutely terrible. I had a panic attack because I get kinda claustrophobic in chaotic situations like that. So we moved up to the balcony completely shook at what just happened. If we had known there was going to be a mosh we wouldn't have waited 3 hours and gone down in the pit. It's one thing moshing at a metal show where you expect it, but moshing to relaxing Mac Demarco music?? Weird. Anyways most of the people who waited that long and got close spots lost them at the end of the night to annoying, sweaty guys who I really, reaaallly wanted to punch in the face. But, hey, it was a learning experience I guess. Mac played great and was funny as usual. Just wish he cared a little bit more about the safety of his fans.

I think this was the best live set I've been to all year! Better than anything at the festivals for sure.

The setlist was pulled off perfectly but really it wasn't even about the songs; it was the energy!

By the fourth or fifth song, Mac and his crew has the crowd in full party mode: people were throwing clothing at the band, everyone was soaked in liquor, the beer salesman struggled to cut through the crowd and fans were climbing up on stage and jumping into the crowd.

I've never seen stuff like this at a show so small, just over 2000, unbelievable!

Mac finished as he always does, by crowd surfing through the entire venue. Then the crowd started surfing too. There were so many of us crowd surfing I had no idea who was holding us up!

When they finished their setlist, the crowd went wild for an encore. Every one of us stomping the ground, making the loudest noise of the evening. And when they did encore they played a 10-minute mashup of hardrock covers which got the crowd into possibly the largest, most gentle mosh pit there's ever been.

It was definitely something to experience, even if you're not a huge fan of Demarco. If you are then it's double down. And if you've never crowd surfed before...

If you are even considering attending a Mac Demarco concert, let me save you some time and decide for you. YOU. ARE. GOING. Not only is his music god-sent, but his show is f***ing good. Mac is one of the strangest people I have ever seen in the absolute best way possible. He made me laugh and smile about 80% of the show. The other 20% I was either moshing or contemplating my future with him (jk).

I saw him two nights in a row at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, and both nights were unbelievable. The first night, during his crowd surf, I touched his butt *angels singing*. The second night, when he crowd surfed to the back, climbed up to the balcony, then back-flopped into the crowd, I was right below him- yes, I caught Mac.

He just makes really good connections with his audience, talking to us, making physical contact with us, jamming with us...

The other band members killed it too! I was front row and made gnarly eye-contact with the drummer, Joe. Also, I smiled and tossed up a peace sign to the bassist, Pierce, and he smiled back and gave me a head nod. AND I met the guitarist Andy after the first show.

Basically, these were two of the best nights in my life.

Moral of the story, GO SEE MAC.

Mac Demarco was the best concert I've ever been to. He's really not what you would expect from a superstar, donning a truckers hat along with an old, ratty t-shirt, navy blue sweatpants and his iconic red vans with big socks, but he's sure got the confidence to pull it off. Being at his concert feels like visiting an old friend. Between nearly every one of his jazzy, slacker rock style tunes he'll let everyone know with a hint of irony that they intend on playing another song after that last one. His show has a great summer-y vibe to it with just a hint of suspension waiting to see if he is going to do anything crazy. (He does have a bit of a reputation after his infamous interpretation of U2's Beautiful Day).

The evening with Mac consists of some Elvis Presley-esque vocals from the "Rock and Roll Nightclub" record, summer-y guitar melodies from "2" and electric keyboard ballads from "Salad Days." It is just simply a show you can't miss. I get a good feeling this is just the start of his career which I sure hope I'm right about because I can't wait to go back and see him again!

Saw him in Bristol and it was my first gig and I'll always remember it as my best. The support, Montero, was actually surprisingly good and you could tell they had tried their best. The interaction with the crowd kept everybody entertained, there would be short breaks between the songs where they would goof around and just overall increase the atmosphere. He played everyone's favourites and classics, such as 'Ode to Viceroy' or 'Chamber of Reflection'. Throughout the show, various things occurred, such as one fan throwing a can of beans at him to a rose being thrown. One of the most mindblowing tracks was 'Moonlight on the River' which captured the entire audience. The final 30minutes of the show was a multitude of covers. This was the most boring part of the show admittingly but it was still entertaining to watch and if you didn't enjoy it that much you could then leave and you wouldn't have missed their main tracks. I would definitely pay to see Mac again and will be anticipating the next time I can!

THE FORCE IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE!!!

I was never really a fan nor did much listening to him. I'd probably heard Salad days twice and knew he was a sick hobo looking Canadaian dude.

This was before seeing him this year in Montreal.

Let me tell you... the show was the best show I've been too!!

You could totally feel the comradery with him and the band. Their all a bunch of rad dudes who are insanely talented musicians. ALL INSPIRING, the lot of them!! They encouraged my friends and I to crowd surf and were frothing on the crowds excitement!

I got the chance to meet him after the gig.Honestly, Mac seems like your friend. The guys a hard core chiller. Honestly dude your talk meant a lot to me. Glad we were able to sit and talk life&music. It was great to tell you a little about my story and vis versa. You inspired me to play more guitar and find my style! That night you became a music role model for me buddy.

Thanks for the good times man! Stoked on whats happening for ya!!

This was my first Mac show, and it was also Mac's biggest headlining show. At first it didn't seem fitting that seats took up the entire venue. However, that didn't stop Mac from putting on the most amazing performance I have ever seen. His wild onstage antics mixed with his very chill songs was a perfect combination, and as he is my favorite singer, it was an absolute privilege to see him live at one of the most important shows thus far. He played a myriad of different songs of his, opening with his Beach Boys inspired track "On the Level", doing an unplugged rendition of "My Kind of Woman" in the middle, and ending the show with "Still Together" (and announcing Keira's pregnancy!), and did an encore with "Watching Him Fade Away". I brought my film camera and (hopefully) got some wonderful shots of him in action. Overall, it was an incredible performance and he kept everyone on their feet for the whole two and a half hours. Would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

I honestly can't believe I went to this show, that's how good it was.

My sister and I bagged these tickets during the summer when it was announced he'd be coming to Michigan. We were drowning in the anticipation to seeing him perform live in front of our faces, and it was wild in the best way possible. Mac brought so much energy to the stage that you begin to ignore annoying crowd mates. Singing along never felt so right. Did I mention he's fuckin good live? He's fuckin good live. He has such a unique group and there was never a dull moment while he was on the stage(or in the crowd and started climbing up to the balcony).

The t-shirts for the tour sold out, which was a tad disappointing, but the memory of that night makes up for it. I hope he makes his round again because that was a night I'll never forget. A little heads up, whenever Mac Demarco is coming to your area bag those tickets fast.

Pretty bad compared to the other concert a year or two ago (That concert was one of the best I've ever been to).

Someone got the "bright idea" of sharing their blunt with him at the start and after half an hour or so, doing somewhat decently, you could really tell it was gonna be a shit show. He started telling the same shitty (joke: "repeat after me: "we want our money back."" over and over, singing wacky covers, brought some random, nervous looking girl up on stage to sing happy birthday and made everyone feel uncomfortable as fuck. I knew it couldn't live up to last time he was here, but I was pretty damn disappointed.

TL:DR: They were on stage for 3 hours and spent less than half of that dicking around. It went from a hyped up, crowded and promising show to something I wouldn't even spent my Wednesday evening on.

Mac DeMarco is hitting the road with his road trip instrumental album “Five Easy Hot Dogs.”

The indie singer-songwriter will perform one night in Los Angeles and three nights in New York, Paris and London in support of the record, which he released in January.

DeMarco will be accompanied by a full band, playing an “intimate” set of “Five Easy Hot Dogs” in its entirety alongside rearranged versions of songs from across his discography.

“Hello, Mac D here. In July we are bringing ‘Five Easy Hot Dogs’ to the stage. Should be nice, should be different, hopefully, it will be special. Hope to see you there,” he said in a statement.

In recording the album, DeMarco stayed far away from the studio, instead opting to adventure across North America and record spontaneous instrumentals inspired by the cities he stopped in, from Portland to Vancouver to Chicago.

“Making this record felt quite natural for me,” DeMarco told Variety earlier this year. “It has its own weird little musical identity, and it doesn’t ‘slap,’ it doesn’t have ‘bangers.’ It just is what it is. I love music. I love recording music. I love listening to music. And I don’t need extra baggage to come with it. It’s a very simple pleasure of being alive.”

In the interview, DeMarco also teased bringing “Five Easy Hot Dogs” to the stage, saying, “It wouldn’t make sense to take it on tour, but maybe a handful of shows.”
