The term Lanao is derived from a Maranao word “Ranao” which means a body of water, of which “Maranao” means “Lake Dweller.” The Maranaos are natives of the place, a Malay-Arabic descent occupying the lands around Lake Lanao, situated at the central part of Lanao del Sur. Lanao applies to the entire area before its division.

It has a total population of 1,010,563 individuals encompassing the estimated total number of 90, 092 households of which a majority or 69% are Christians and 31% are Maranao. Lanao province has a total land area of 382, 478.66 hectares or 3, 692 sq. kms. Forty percent of the total land area are plains that is why most of their populations are farmers and a considerable percent are fishermen. The municipality of Tubod is the present capital town of the province upon passing Republic Act No. 9724 separating the City of Iligan its former capital city from the 18 Legislative District of the province of Lanao del Norte to constitute the Lone Legislative District of the City of Iligan. At present, Lanao del Norte despite its colorful past is considered to be the frontier of peace in the northern Mindanao region. Why? Because even if the province is comprised of 22 municipalities (462 Barangays) namely: Bacolod, Balo-i, Baroy, Kapatagan, Kauswagan, Lala, Linamon, Magsaysay, Maigo, Matungao, Munai, Nunungan, Pantao Ragat, Pantar, Poona Piagapo, Salvador, Sapad, Sultan Naga Dimaporo (Karomatan), Tagoloan, Tangkal and Tubod with diverse culture and religion, still peace and unity prevails.

The province is known from its breath-taking caves and waterfalls such as Sta. Cruz Falls, Cathedral Falls and the famous Tinago Falls, located in the municipality of Linamon (also claimed by Iligan as it is in the boundary between the city and the municipality of Linamon). However, Lanao del Norte is more than that. Here are some of the best tourist sites you shouldn’t miss when in Lanao.

Where to go

Pikalawag Beach

This underrated beach is considered by locals as a vibrant place for relaxation. It is located in the municipality of Sultan Naga Dimaporo with fine sand and rich underwater resources. Locals mostly visit this beach enjoying fun activities like boat riding “ sakayan ,” and also their latest amenities – the inflatable waterpark.

La Libertad Lake

It is located in the municipality of Kapatagan, a 20 minute drive from the town proper. The lake is small, but its clean and properly managed. Several fun activities such as a boat ride around the lake, swan pedal boating, aqua-cycling, kayaking and many more. Locals come and visit this place during special occasions, like birthdays, family picnics, and fishing. Make sure to wear life jacket if you decides to swim or whenever engaging the lakes amenities.

Cathedral Falls

It is named after the marvelous rock formation surrounding the falls resembling like a cathedral. What’s good thing about Cathedral Falls is its accessibility. Unlike before, you can not get near the falls during rainy days, because of floods as visitors needs to cross the stream to see its beauty. Now, new paved road has been opened which go directly to its view-deck allowing tourist to marvel its beauty rain or shine.

Provincial Ceramic Center

Mineral resources both metallic and non-metallic are known to be found in some municipalities. Clay is abundant in the municipalities of Baroy and Tubod allowing their Provincial Ceramic Center to enjoy an unlimited supply. If you love and enjoy learning how to make pots, this good place for you.

  Dapit-alim

Located in Tubod/Kolambugan, nestled in 51/2 hectares of land with 243 steps going up overlooking the blue waters of Panguil Bay and fronting the majestic Mt. Malindang. It is a place for retreat, a center for prayer, reconciliation and holistic healing, a healing of our relations to God, His other creations and our fellows.

Pagayawan Falls

Locals refers it as “mini waterfalls” located at Pagayawan, Bacolod, Lanao del Norte, but upon getting near to the view-deck and gazing the falls itself, it is actually and literally breath-taking! The falls is a tributary falls cascading into a bed of volcanic rocks which is a potential source of power.

  Kauswagan Boardwalk

Just like any boardwalks, the place is much enjoyed early in the morning and late afternoon. The best thing about these hours are the sunset and sunrise which is just soothing and relaxing both mentally and physically.

Where to Eat

tourist spot near iligan city lanao del norte

Soy Cafe and Diner

A road-trip adventure in Lanao del Norte will not be complete without trying their local flavors. This modern Filipino cafe is a homegrown of the town of Lala. Time is a luxury, so we do not have time to stay longer, so we decided to taste their best sellers only. Their version of baby back ribs is surely a run away.

Andrew’s Pizza

This homegrown pizza house in Tubod, Lanao del Norte is surprisingly very good. They have established new branches in Maranding and now in Iligan City. Whenever you are nearby just drop by at their address at Dela Cruz Bldg., Cabili Ave.

Campilan Bakery and Barbecue

This ancient bakery, yes ancient but gold, because they have been in the food industry business since 1960’s and up to the present, they are still using their traditional brick oven, locally known as pugon when baking their best sellers such as ensaymada.

The province of Lanao del Norte is home to several exciting and colorful festivals, showcasing its population’s diverse ethnic background, their rich and authentic culture and arts. These festivals serves as their expressions of thanksgiving for bountiful blessings.

Kinhason Festival of Bacolod , featuring the abundance of fish and various seashells which has been institutionalized as a yearly affair in conjunction with the annual town fiesta in honor of their patron saint Sto. Nino and Local Tourism Month held every 16th of January.

Nangkaan Festival of Maigo , featuring the abundant produce of their town which is Nangka or Jackfruit, celebrated together with the Maigo Charter Day.

Alimangohan Festival of Lala , inspired from their town’s abundant produce of alimango or crabs.

Hugyaw sa Kadagatan of Kauswaga n, the locals thanksgiving to the Gods for a bountiful harvest in the sea celebrated along with their town fiesta and Foundation Day on the 25th day of April.

Niyogan Festival of Magsaysay , first celebrated in the year 1997 of which the main objective of the festivity are to promote the potentials of Magsaysay in coconut production, promote and develop the coconut industry for tourism, establish the municipalities identity from that of other municipalities and to promote peace and unity in spite of cultural diversities.

Lechonan Festival of Baroy , featuring the roasted pigs participated by its 23 barangays of which each of them fashionably dressed their roasted pig and carried while they march through the way during their parade, winners are chosen by the way its presented, dressed and most specially the taste.

Sagayan Festival of the Province , is celebrated in honor of Datu Bantugan the legendary hero of the Darangen, a Maranao Epic, in his quest to rescue his sister abducted by another ruler of another kingdom of which in the end the two warring groups were pacific and reconciled.

Kahumayan Festival of Kapatagan , a tribute to the rice farmers, who are undoubtedly the most important part of the province’s if not the country’s food security highlighting the importance of rice and the engagement and participation of individuals and organizations in the attainment of the celebrations goal which is to improve production and access to rice.

Sagingan Festival of Tubod , being the primary agricultural town of the province of which 80% of their total land area are dedicated to agriculture and primarily banana as its crop, the festival is conceptualized highlighting the presentation of the different varieties of banana.

Bangsamoro Basic Law | What is it for Lanao del Norte?

The plebiscite actually determines the fate of 6 towns namely; Tagoloan, Balo-i, Pantar, Munai, Tangcal, and Nunungan who initially agreed to be included in the embattled Bangsamoro Basic Law during the plebiscite in 2001. With BBL the present Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao will be demolished and the new BBL now Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) which was passed into law and signed by President Duterte which will establish a new autonomous region. BBL is the result of the long and tedious peace negotiations between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front whom at the same time responsible for the creation of ARMM in the year 1996 under the leadership of Nur Misuari.

The province is not actually against the BOL. It is actually campaigning against the inclusion of the aforementioned 6 municipalities. It is grounded on five valid (bloggers’ viewpoint) reasons:

  • First, the province as we can see is already enjoying a constant peace. This is evident on how the towns in this province prosper all throughout the years. The people of Lanao del Norte want to send this message that regardless of religion each one of them are united even felt stronger when they are working together.
  • Secondly, the province argued that BBL does not provide or there is no provision that provides the creation of new local government unit.
  • The aforementioned towns historically serves as the buffer-zone for the people dwelling in the low lands. Historically, people who have bad intentions who wants to penetrate to the more populated towns in the valleys of the province requires them to pass through these town in question. With the control of these towns resides on the province of Lanao del Norte it was easier for them to quell the bad elements.
  • The province’s Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) will diminish. We all know that the access and distribution of this funds is calculated based on land area and number of populations. With 6 towns separating from the province this would mean that a considerable land area and number of population will be taken away which means a lower IRA for the province.
  • The people of Lanao del Norte can not allow its parts to be removed. Like a human body, each municipalities are considered as its parts. For centuries, it functions well and is dependent on each other. It would be hard to take them apart, crippling through menacing consequences.

Final Thoughts

Nevertheless, the final say lay to the hands of the people of Lanao del Norte. It is no wonder that this single vote requires them to evaluate the pros and cons of their decisions thoroughly. Given the present order, it would be prudent that before these six towns should be included with the new autonomous region by virtue of BOL. If these towns really wanted to be included after the plebiscite, why not give enough time (transition period of 5 to 10 years) to the present ARMM to be demolished and establish itself first as the new autonomous region by virtue of BOL. When time proves that this new order is actually working soundly, then that is the time we start the process of inclusion of the aforementioned territories. However this should only applies to the towns who really voted yes for the inclusion during the plebiscite. We should not haste to decide of including the six towns of a new system that would threaten the existing peace and order of the province.

TINAGO FALLS, ILIGAN CITY TRAVEL GUIDE

Tinago Falls, Iligan City, One of the most memorable places which I’ve visited in my recent vacation to Iligan City

Tinago Falls Travel Guide

Tinago falls, wherein the word  Tinago  derived from the word “hidden,” is located at Iligan’s Town – Linamon. Some of you may wonder why how the locals named it such. You have to take 500 steps before reaching the place. It’s as if nature has nowhere to be found unless you make the effort of endless-feel trekking. On the deep gorge, you can see this  hidden  Tinago Falls’ beauty and majesty.

It takes patience and endurance to get there, but I am telling you – it is worth it! I can’t describe how beautiful the place can be. The fantastic small cave in the falls is welcome to the visitor for them to hear the rumbling waters from the inside.

I’m lost for words on how this Iligan City has much attraction to offer for both locals and international tourists. Out of the city’s waterfalls, Tinago Falls is second to Maria Christina Falls as the most-visited tourist spot in that area.

Tourists love the scenic waterfalls coming from the 240feet-high place running down into the deep tranquil water, alluring you to take an instant deep on the water.

Relieve your stress. Stay away from the hustle and bustle of the city. You need to relive and recharge trough internalizing the nature-feel spirit of Tinago Falls. Whether you need to escape from worries or replenish your lost energy, this tourist spot is the best place to go.

The welcoming ambiance of this place makes you want to go back for more.

TINAGO FALLS, ILIGAN CITY TRAVEL GUIDE

As we approached the foot of the mountain, the magical paradise was unveiled little by little. And finally, when you have full sight of the falls, you will surely be refreshed. I truly enjoyed the Tinago falls.

How to Get to Tinago Falls

Manila – Cagayan de Oro

Buy a ticket from Cebu Pacific or Philippines Airlines. Look for seat sales ahead of time. Those who practice DIYs and thrifty traveling are the happiest travelers I’ve ever known.

Cebu/Davao City – Cagayan de Oro

You can take a direct flight from Davao to CDO, or you can opt to ride a bus via Rural Transit or Bachelor Express going to Butuan. From Butuan, take a bus ride going to CDO. Both travel expenses cost P600 pesos. (Php300 each)

Cagayan de Oro – Iligan City

If you took a plane trip, you could ride a taxi going to Balua Integrated Bus and Jeepney Terminal. From there, take the Iligan City route bus. On the other hand, if you travel by land, ride a tricycle going to the terminal with the same instruction.

Iligan City – Tinago Falls

a.  Habal-habal  – this may be the most convenient among other rides, but the fare is pricy, which starts from Php 600. If it’s not affordable for you, you can take the second option.

b.  Jeep to Habal – habal (motorcycle)  – After getting off from the bus, take a jeep going to the Iligan city proper, then ride another jeepney via Maria Christina or Purakan route. Advise the driver to take you to Purakan crossing. From there, ride a habal-habal to take you directly to Tinago Falls.

Compared to the first option, this can be time-consuming but a lot cheaper. Besides, you travel to Tinago Falls with adventure in mind. So, why don’t you take it as a full blast experience with your family and friends?

The first jeep ride cost Php8, then another P11 for the second one. The habal-habal ride costs Php35 per head. You can share it with your partner on this.

TINAGO FALLS, ILIGAN CITY TRAVEL GUIDE

The water alone was so inviting and the sight and sounds of the children diving and swimming and having fun in the bamboo raft were very enticing.  The rentals and entrance were very cheap as well so I took all the opportunity I had to enjoy the place. Visiting Tinago Falls was very rewarding and while the place is quite far from the city I vow to return and bring more of my friends who have never been there.

Checklists

ü Extra clothes (for trekking and swimming)

ü Foods (I bet you don’t want to return and take another 500 steps going to Tinago Falls.)

ü First Aid Kit

ü Camera! (Capture and relive every moment.)

Travelling gives happiness more than you can imagine. Bring the unreplaceable smiles, and laughter wherever you go. You can see how it’ll change your life better than before!

Tinago Falls is one of the beautiful if not the most beautiful waterfall in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte in the southern Philippine, Mindanao. It is one of the main tourist attractions in Iligan and one of the most visited falls in the city. In fact, Tinago was one of the locations which were featured in the movie   ” Forever and a Day” which starred by KC Concepcion and Sam Milby.

Tinago Falls, Iligan, Philippines

Trekking to the falls includes approximately 445  descending steps which the locals called the winding staircase. The “going down” was relatively easy, but the “going up” was really a challenge. For senior citizens going into the falls could be difficult. In fact, going down the falls is not advised for the hypertensive or people with a heart problem. Otherwise, they are advised to take a rest in between.

The falls is high, with an elevation of approximately 420 feet cascades.  The very cold waters cascading beautifully into a deep and calm basin-like pool which appears like a blue-colored lagoon.

Travel Guide to the Tinago Falls in Iligan City, Philippines

Tucked away in the mountains of Iligan in Mindanao, the Tinago Falls is a gorgeous body of water that offers a relaxing getaway from the hustle of the city .

It is considered as one of the main tourist attractions in Iligan. And is included in the list of the ‘Majestic Waterfalls’ in the city .

With the height of about 240 ft high, the falls is an amazing sight to see especially with its bluish water on a summer day.

Upon your arrival, you will definitely understand why its high on anybody list of tourist attractions in Iligan .

Our visit to the falls was during our Cagayan de Oro (CDO) trip just last week. It was part of our Iligan Tour, which includes two (2) more falls. We left with some cool memories and another Iligan tourist spot unlocked in my visual map. 😉

If you want visit, here’s our ultimate travel guide to Tinago Falls including how to get there, what to expect and things to do .. Read on and enjoy your visit!

Table of Contents

Services, Amenities, Entrance Fees and Other Activity Fees

Dine with the falls as your background, enjoy the views of the falls, swim in the cold and refreshing waters, do some cliff diving with the locals, ride the bamboo raft to the falls, have some waterfall massage, travel tips to visiting the tinago falls, what to bring to the falls, how to get here.

The Tinago is located between Linamon and Iligan City (in Lanao del Norte) . It can be accessed via habal-habal or motorcycle.

If you are a group, like ours was, the van can access the road going to the Tinago Falls, or its entrance.

There are no commercial flights going to Iligan City. You’ll have to pass through either CDO or Davao City if you are from Manila or Cebu (two of the Philippines’ major cities).

There are several budget airlines that can take you here, so if you want really cheap airfares, watch out for their promo fares .

If you just landed in Davao, you need to take the bus to take you to Butuan. And then take another bus to CDO.

If you are already in Cagayan De Oro (CDO), then ride a jeep or a cab to take you to the Bulua Terminal. From there take the local buses going to Iligan. Travel time is around 2-4 hours depending on the traffic and speed.

Alight at the Iligan City Terminal and from there, ride a jeep going to the public market. Here, ride another jeep going to Maria Christina or Purakan and inform the driver to drop you off at the crossing in Purakan.

Once you’re here, hire a motorcycle or habal-habal to take you to the falls.

Prices may vary depending on the distance and the minimum fare at the time of your visit. Be sure to inquire first before boarding.

What To Expect

In truth, whenever we travel with friends, I seldom do research beforehand. One of our companions asked me what I was expecting.. But I really couldn’t answer him.. I was just expecting a waterfall, the smell of crisp fresh air and a relaxing afternoon.

Nevertheless, the falls was impressive with its multi-layer of rocks breaking the fall of water from the top. There are two more smaller falls nearby that are perfect for photo lovers and fans of waterfall massage too .

Tinago in English, means ‘hidden’, which is exactly what the falls is. You need to go down around 436 stairs to get to the falls .

You won’t see a glimpse of the falls from the entrance. Just the sound of birds chirping nearby. As you go down the stairs, you’ll be seduced by the gentle rush of water and the smell of fresh water!

Visiting this waterfall in Iligan comes with various applicable fees.

Guests will be paying for an entrance fee of 25 Php plus other fees for other amenities. Payment is done before entering the falls and should be settled before you start the activity .

This includes payment for other amenities provided. Amenities and facilities at the falls include some the following:

Tables and Chairs : You can rent some tables and chairs to put your things on and have your lunch on. There are stone tables and plastic chairs available for guests to choose from.

Price is at 50 Php .

Life Vests : Life vests are available for a fee. Please take note that you are required to wear one especially when you go nearer to the base of the falls for safety purposes.

Price is at 25 Php .

Bamboo Raft : Now who doesn’t love riding the bamboo raft when visiting a waterfall?

We enjoyed it when we visiting the Kawasan Falls in Badian as well as at the Cambugahay Falls . Tinago falls was no different albeit more funnier to say the least. LOL.

Our guide was very game in giving us directions on how to pose for the camera.

At the time of our visit, the bamboo raft provided by the local government was not available, so private individuals provided it for guests. Payment is made to them and I guess prices vary.

Ours was negotiated at 300 Php for 6 heads . It was about a 30-minute ride back and forth.

Sari-Sari Store : There is a sari-sari store beside the stairs if you wish to buy some chips and finger foods. You can also wash here after swimming at the falls.

A big drum of water – with a small dipper – is constantly being filled by fresh water at the back.

There’s a comfort room (though a bit unkept) at the back of the receiving area near the entrance for those who want to change and dry up too.

CCTV Camera : There are also several CCTV cameras stationed in some of the main areas of the falls. Talk about a safe and secure day trip, don’t you think?

Local Guide : There are locals on queue who will be waiting for guests who wants a guide with them for a fee.

No minimum rate was indicated as it’ll be the discretion of the guests. For those who want a base fee, however, you can pay the guide a minimum of 50 Php per head.

In truth, you really won’t need a guide going down as the path is clearly marked. But, just to support locals, go ahead and hire one. Plus, you’ll have someone to carry your stuff going down and up the stairs.

They also helped us get clips for cliff diving and served as ‘spotter’ or guide for one of our companions who wanted to cliff dive.

Things to Do at the Tinago Falls

Personally, I find this waterfall in Iligan a perfect place for a day trip. A place where families and friends (and even couples) can enjoy an entire day in. Not just a part of an Iligan Day Tour.

Nevertheless, we don’t have the luxury of time always. So I guess, it’ll depend on the group’s availability.

If you are visiting Tinago Falls, below are some of the things that you can do.

As mentioned, tables and chairs are available for a fee. We rented the stone table located near the water.

We bought some lechon (roasted pork) at ‘Gloria’s Ihawan’ on our way to the falls. There was hanging rice (puso), banana, marang, and some soft drinks too.

We decided to eat first before swimming. It was a good idea as swimming (and cliff diving) can be pretty tiresome.

So it’s not just about the bathing but the views as well. Tinago Falls is indeed majestic and a must-visit for tourists traveling to Iligan and maybe, CDO. 🙂

If you’re too lazy to change or feeling a bit grumpy, the views of the falls will definitely relax you. Spend a minute (or an hour) just sitting around and enjoying the views.

The falls is pretty inviting and its waters included. There are some pretty deep and shallow portion so be sure to wear your life vests always.

The water is perfect specially on hot days. Plus, all you’ll hear will be the constant fall of the water, a few shouts and laughters from the rest of the guests and the chirping of the birds as you float along. 🙂

For adrenaline junkies, cliff diving here is one of the fun things to do at the Tinago falls and one that you can enjoy with the locals too.

There’s a wall beside the falls that you can climb on and perch on some protruding rocks. You can go high as you’d like, but with guide supervision too.

When one of our companions wanted to go cliff diving, our local guide went with him to guide him.

There was this boy who was scolded by his father (I’m guessing they were locals). The boy was climbing the wall and was attempting to jump. He was pretty young and he was going farther up the wall to say the least.

Another fun thing to do at the Tinago Falls is to enjoy its cold rushing water by riding the bamboo raft!

It’s just a short trip but a fun one, that is.. We had three guides with us, plus our local guide (so that’s a total of 4). They were guiding the raft towards the falls and a small cavern where guests can have their picture taken.

They were also pretty game with instructing us to pose and leading us for a closer look of the falls.

While riding the bamboo raft, you can have some of the amazing waterfall massage.

Just make sure that the water is not rushing too strong as it can be pretty painful. I remember feeling like being hit on the head several times by the water and it can be pretty uncomfortable. LOL.

Pro Tip : Cover your head with the life vest while passing through the strong rush of water. This way, you can still enjoy the moment and not have your face covered by your hair. LOL.

Visiting the falls can be exciting. Most of us would look forward to a relaxing day to say the least. But let us help you make it more fun and hassle-free by giving you these travel tips below:

1. Buy all your needed provisions before visiting the falls . This includes drinking water, rice (if you love eating rice, that is), viand and maybe some desserts too! There is a Sari-Sari store, but they wouldn’t be able to provide you everything that you’ll need. 2. Bring some trash bags too when you go and dispose your garbage properly when going home . There are trash cans in the area so you can dispose them afterwards. 3. Be mindful of your things . It is pretty safe, but small items STILL can get lost. Secure them properly before leaving your stuff behind to enjoy the falls. 4. Secure your things when you swim (or maybe while cliff diving) . As mentioned, some areas are pretty deep so any dislodged items may be gone and cannot be retrieved if they fall into the water. 5. Sharp and slippery rocks are present , to be sure to wear non-slip footwear. 6. Bring cash with you . There are no ATMs nearby if you run short and you’ll need to pay everything with cash.

Aside from the travel tips mentioned above, here are some of the things you need to bring while visiting the falls:

1. Bring non-slip footwear. 2. Wear comfortable clothes as you need to climb the stairs (it can be hot and humid), plus you’ll get to enjoy the place more if you are comfortable with what you are wearing. 3. Bring trash bags for your wastes. 4. Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluid.

Hope we have given you some cool and helpful information when you visit Tinago Falls in Iligan!

Such a comprehensive guide! Well done Marvi!

Awww.. Thank you Lisa! <3

I am in awe of the waterfalls on phillipines! Loved this post and gonna save it for my trip to Phillipines next time!

You should definitely visit! 😀

I love the Philippines so much! I spent there 1 month in spring off the beaten path the 2 weeks of that period and I cant wait to return! The locals are amazing too! Pinned my post for my future trip! Thank you!

Awww.. That’s so amazing, Val! Glad to hear you enjoyed our country.. 🙂 You’re very welcome!

I love waterfalls! You wrote a great comprehensive guide for those who may want to visit. It looks like there is so much to do. You can relax and take in nature or do some activities. Great way to get away from the city. Thanks for the info!

You’re welcome Alex!

I love how blue the water is compared to all the green jungle around it. Tinago falls looks like it’s a bit hard to reach but would reward the traveller with a unique experience. I would want to stay there overnight so I see the falls at sunset and first thing in the morning too.

That sounds like a great idea.. The falls is not open 24/7 though. But I’m pretty sure there are nice places to stay nearby so that you can visit as soon as they open 🙂

I love to visit waterfalls when I travel and the Tinago Falls are absolutely gorgeous. I haven’t been to the Philippines yet but I would like to visit. Great tips like bringing your own garbage bags and I would like to try the waterfall massage as it sounds heavenly but I would be worried about being pushed under by the force!

They don’t allow swimming near the falls itself, based on what we saw.. They have locals acting as watch guards.. You can definitely try the massage through the bamboo raft 🙂

Wow this is lovely!! Would have never learned about this place if it wasn’t for you.

Aww.. Great to hear that. 🙂

Sounds like an adventure just getting to the falls themselves, but well worth the trip based on your beautiful photos! If I’m ever in the area I’ll have to check the Tinago Falls out!

Thanks Kelly!

Tinago falls looks lovely. Your comprehensive guide is impressive. I hope to go there someday!

Thanks so much Ketki! Glad you found it informative 🙂

The Tinago Falls in Iligan really looks majestic and worth visiting for a perfect outing in nature. Swimming in cold water, taking waterfall massage and going for cliff diving sounds adventurous.

I can’t imagine riding a raft in through the Tinago Falls! What a treat. Love the photos and all that can be done there. Thanks for sharing!

You’re welcome Yara! 🙂

Wow, those cliffs are amazing, though I cannot imagine cliff jumping. I love waterfalls and wasn’t ‘t familiar with this one until reading your post. Exceptional pictures. Well done. The bamboo raft looks very fun. I’d totally do that.

Thanks Melody!

I had never even heard of Tinago Falls before! But you bet it’s going on my list now. I’d love to soak under the smaller falls for a massage!

We’ve visited waterfalls all over the world and these are beautiful. I’d love to visit one day. Being able to swim just below is amazing but I have to say, I don’t think I’d be brave enough to cliff dive.

Me too.. LOL.. But it is fun watching someone who does! 😀

Really helpful tips! I’m planning to visit iligan but will be coming from dapitan. Just want to know if it’s safe in travel in iligan to see the falls. You’re the best source I know since you’re blog is just 2019 recent.

Hello Jigs! Yes, safe na man to visit 🙂 There are military present in the streets, but we didn’t feel threatened or unsafe at all 🙂

Hi . From laguindingan airport can we go straight to tinago falls? Or atleast overnight near tinago. Kc 5pm arrival nmin sa airport para early morning ma enjoy na ang falls. Then will proceed to camiguin. KayA ba ng ganhng itenerary?

Hello Joy. Yes, kaya naman.. Just look for vans na papuntang Iligan once you arrive at the airport. 🙂 May mga accommodations na man in Iligan, just make sure to pre-book your hotel/ hostel para walang hassle once you arrive. Hope this helps!

This is really helpful! It’s our first time to visit Mindanao and we plan to go here from CDO. Do you happen to know until what time they allow visitors? I cannot find anything online. Thank you!

Hi Lyneth, thanks for the feedback. 🙂 When we visited, the falls is open from Mon-Sun at 8 AM to 5 PM. Hope this helps. 🙂 Enjoy!

A DIY Travel Guide to Maria Christina Falls, Iligan City: Everything You Need to Know

ma christina falls travel guide

The Maria Christina Falls is a stunning waterfall located in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte. Known for its natural beauty and impressive size, it is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Not to mention the fact that Iligan City is known as the City of Majestic Falls as it is surrounded by 23 majestic waterfalls. Thus, visiting Iligan City should be part of your bucket list and one of the places to visit in Mindanao.

If you are going backpacking around the Northern Mindanao region, Iligan City must be part of your trip. As mentioned above, you can visit a lot of majestic waterfalls around the city such as Maria Christina Falls (which is the most famous one), Tinago Falls, Mimbalot Falls, etc. With that, here’s a DIY travel guide to help you make the most of your trip to Maria Christina Falls. This travel guide to Maria Christina Falls also includes other places to see in Iligan City.

Table of Contents

How to get to Maria Christina Falls, Iligan City?

diy travel guide to maria christina falls iligan

  • From Manila, take a flight to Cagayan De Oro City. The entry point should be at the Laguindingan Airport, which is approximately 75 kilometers away from Iligan City.
  • From the airport, take a van to head to the Tambo terminal. Travel time from Laguindingan Airport to the terminal is approximately 2 hours.
  • Then from the terminal, take a tricycle to the jeep terminal for Buru-un. Then, ride the jeep going to Buru-un and inform the driver to drop you off at Maria Cristina Falls.

On the other hand, in our case, my friend and I hired a habal habal driver so from the bus/van terminal, we met him and then he took us to Maria Christina Falls.

Essential Travel Tips and Reminders

  • I would highly recommend hiring a habal habal beforehand to avoid being a hassle during your trip to Iligan City.
  • Make sure to have enough cash before going around the city.
  • Be mindful of the time while traveling around the city especially if you are going for a day tour. Buses going back to the city might be limited late at night. Better to book a room within the city, or try to leave the city around 6 PM for your safety purposes as well.
  • Please take note that as of this writing (June 2023), tourists are not allowed yet to visit the Maria Christina Falls since the roads going there are not yet fully developed and it is still dangerous to get there due to unexpected landslides.
  • To get updated on the status of Maria Christina Falls, you may visit NAPOCOR official website before you consider visiting the falls.

To be frank, in our case, we visited the waterfall around November 2022 , and I got a direct contact so we were allowed to enter the inside the premises. Though we could only stay for a short period of time.

Estimated Budget and Expenses

  • Van from the airport to Iligan City: Php 250
  • Habal habal to Maria Christina Falls & Tinago Falls: Php 700
  • Bus from Iligan City to Cagayan De Oro: Php 280

Best Time to Visit the Maria Christina Falls

The best time to visit Maria Christina Falls in Iligan City is during the rainy season (June to December) when the water flow is at its peak. However, the waterfall can be visited all year round, even during the dry season. The waterfall is always captivating to see in any season! (I wanted to cry while writing this. Hahaha!)

Entry Fees and Permits

There is an entrance fee to access the  Maria Christina Falls but the fee is typically minimal and subject to change, so it’s advisable to check the current rates before your visit.

However, as mentioned above, the Maria Christina Falls is still closed (as of this writing) until further notice.

Other Places to Visit in Iligan City

Tinago falls.

a famous waterfall in iligan city

One of the most popular waterfalls and tourist attractions to visit in Iligan City, Tinago Falls is another enchanting waterfall worth visiting. It is known for its crystal-clear water and a hidden cave behind the waterfall.

I heard from our tour guide that Tinago Falls is also popular with local celebrities in the Philippines.

Mimbalot Falls

Situated in a scenic rainforest, Mimbalot Falls offers a serene atmosphere and beautiful cascades.

Timoga Springs

Timoga Springs is a natural spring resort located just outside the city. The resort features several pools filled with cool spring water, surrounded by lush vegetation and picnic areas.

Macaraeg-Macapagal Ancestral House

Immerse yourself in discovering more about the history of the Philippines. This ancestral house showcases traditional Filipino architecture and offers insights into the city’s history.

However, if you’re traveling within the day, you can just hire a habal-habal driver and try to coordinate with him. For a day tour, it is usually highly recommended to get a package tour where you get to visit the three most popular waterfalls in Iligan City, Ma. Christina Falls (if possible), Tinago Falls, and Mimbalot Falls. In our case, we only spent a half day in Iligan City because we also planned on visiting Marawi City which is located in Lanao del Sur.

My Thoughts on Visiting Maria Christina Falls

chasing waterfalls in iligan city mindanao

Maria Christina Falls is one of the most iconic places that we learn about in elementary school. Ever since I learned about this place, same to the Mayon Volcano in Bicol Region , I told myself that one day, I would want to visit this place. So when I planned our Northern Mindanao trip, I tried my best to really make my childhood dream come true.

My friend and I were so fortunate to have been given a chance to have a glimpse of this majestic waterfall in Iligan City. Learning about the Maria Christina Falls from history textbooks in elementary school was definitely one of my favorite core memories! The inner elementary kid in me must be so happy and fulfilled! Ahhhh! It’s been a dream to get here! (Thank you, Lord!)

For those who are planning to visit Iligan City, don’t lose hope! Maria Christina Falls will soon be open to the public once the roads are finally cleared!

Home to numerous waterfalls, the Province of Lanao del Norte should be on top of your bucket-list of you love chasing those majestic waterfalls. To help you out with your itinerary, here are the top tourist spots in Lanao Del Norte that you shouldn’t miss out.

Top Tourist Spots in Lanao del Norte

Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Lanao del Norte, Philippines

Maria cristina falls.

Maria Cristina Falls , apart from being one of the top tourist spots in Lanao Del Norte, is actually one of the most famous waterfalls in the Philippines. Remember your Sibika at Kultura and HEKASI book? Yes, this is the Maria Cristina we encountered in our elementary books. Some call this place “twin falls” because of the water flows that are separated by a big rock in between. It is inside the National Power Corporation Nature Park and without spending a hundred for the entrance fee, you will get a glimpse of the most visited falls in the country.

Tinago Falls

Tinago Falls, hidden falls if translated in a universal language, is one of the main attractions especially if you are in Iligan City and Linamon town. The falls is 420-ft tall flowing down the basin which is basically considered as a pool where tourists can swim. More and more tourists are visiting the place, thanks to public exposure through social media.

Tinago Falls

Sta. Cruz Falls

Located in Municipality of Kapatagan in Lanao Del Norte, visiting Sta. Cruz Falls will require your strong knees and brave heart. As you go on with your journey with nature, don’t forget to bring your adventurous spirit. The trek will surely bring you excitement. This is one of the falls in the province that remained untouched by humans. It’s so great to visit a destination that is maintained by Mother Nature.

Sta. Cruz Falls

Cathedral Falls

If you find trekking and hiking very challenging, you might want to try going here in one of the top tourist spots in Lanao Del Norte– the Cathedral Falls . Unlike any other falls in the province, you don’t need to tire yourself out because it’s just along the road. You can take a habal – habal from the town proper and you will be dropped at the actual location of the falls.

Cathedral Falls

Timoga Cold Springs

Timoga Cold Springs are the natural sources of water of the Timoga Cold Springs Resorts in downtown Sitio Timoga in Buru-un. You will find different springs where you can get a back massage just by letting the strong water flow to your body. If you want a relaxing trip, don’t miss out your chance to visit the cold springs!

Timoga Cold Springs

Mimbalot Falls

This is another falls situated in Iligan City. Although not as high as other falls in the province, this destination is quite unique because of the strong water that flows making it looks like as clear as glass. There huge rocks below the falls which allow the water to create mini falls. If you want to have a short break from stressful work, you need to visit this place!

Mimbalot Falls

Dodiongan Falls

Last but not least is the Dodiongan Falls in Bonbonon. This is a must-visit destination in Lanao Del Norte and is one of the falls that have no human developments and remains at its natural state.

Dodiongan Falls

How to get to Lanao del Norte

There is no commercial airport in the province of Lanao del Norte. The closest airport is in Laguindingan in Misamis Oriental . From Laguindingan Airport, you can take a van to the main road and from there you can take another bus to Iligan City. If you want to go straight to Kapatagan, you can take a Pagadian-bound bus and alight in Kapatagan.

Information about Tinago Falls Iligan

Tinago falls.

Tinago falls in Iligan

Located behind a deep ravine in Lanao Del Norte, this cascade is aptly named Tinago, which means "hidden" in Tagalog. Before reaching the beautiful falls, one will have to take 500 steps down a winding manmade staircase. The 240 feet high waterfall is a good spot for swimming and cliff diving. For a complete waterfall experience, bamboo rafts are made available for rent.

If you choose to rent one, a local guide will bring you near the foot of the falls, so you can feel the water falling on you or take a dip in the cool waters. There is also a small cave at the side of the falls, which may only be accessed through swimming. It is just a plain rock cave that serves as a resting point for swimmers and offers a different view of the surroundings of Tinago Falls.

There is no doubt that Tinago Falls contributes well to the tourism of Iligan City, but this breathtaking body of water also serves as a water resource for locals near the area. With this, the residents and the local government are doing their best to protect and preserve it. Agro-forestry projects have been implemented to help maintain the cleanliness of the water of Tinago Falls. New planting techniques are used to put up more trees to help stabilize the whole river, and fertilizers are placed every so often to maintain these trees.

Best time to visit

Since the waterfalls are an outdoor attraction, it's best to visit it in the summer months (March to May) when there are minimal chances of heavy rainfall.

Iligan Travel Tips

tourist spot near iligan city lanao del norte

Dubbed the “City of Majestic Waterfalls,” Iligan City will not disappoint if you are after various experiences and views of cascading waters. That feature alone makes it a prime tourist spot in Lanao del Norte in Mindanao, Philippines.

Iligan City is home to Maria Cristina Falls, the iconic waterfall standing proudly at 320 feet on the Agus River. Its natural splendor tells the story of a legend that supposedly involves a tragic ending for sisters Maria and Cristina after falling for the same man. But casting the myths aside, Maria Cristina Falls is not only a beautiful sight but also an essential source of hydroelectric energy for the entire city. Other worthy attractions to include in your itinerary are Tinago Falls, Limunsudan Falls, and Mimbalut Falls, each with a unique character. You also should not miss a visit to St. Michael’s Cathedral and NPC’s Nature Park or a whitewater rafting adventure at Villa Gracia Resort along the Mandulog River.

To complete your experience of northern Mindanao, visit Lanao del Sur, Misamis provinces, and Marawi City.

Lanao del Norte’s Breathtaking Limunsundan Falls

Limunsudan Falls is a two-tiered waterfall situated in Sitio Limunsudan, Brgy. Rogongan, Iligan City. It is the second highest waterfall in the Philippines next to Aliwagwag Falls of Davao Oriental.  The waterfall has a massive water drop of 870 feet with the lower part cascades higher than the Maria Cristina Falls.

It is just one of the many spectacular waterfalls that get little media attention. The reason for their seclusion is that they are hard to access or hidden upon several rainforest or watershed in topographic areas. Upon reaching one of these hidden waterfalls of Iligan, you will be amazed by its wonderful view.

Meanwhile, Sitio Limunsudan (where the falls is located) is a remote village that is part of Barangay Rogongon, Iligan City. The village is near Bukidnon and acts a boundary to it. It can be reached by foot for a two-day trek from Brgy. Rogongon and is more accessible via Cagayan de Oro – Talakag, Bukkidnon. The village is inhabited by the Higaonons, an indigenous tribe represented in every part of Northern Mindanao.  The climate in Sitio Limunsudan is cooler than in any other parts of Iligan City but there are daily afternoon rain showers for the majority of the year that can be quite extreme.

How to get there: From Manila, tourists must take a flight going to Cagayan de Oro City or Iligan City.  Traveling to Limunsudan Falls is difficult and even need the help of the Mechanized Infantry Batallion. Tourists need to take the Iligan – Cagayan de Oro –Talakag – Rogongon route.  For other tourist spots situated in Lanao del Norte, you may read these articles:
