  • Goofs There are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long. Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by. Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.

Not available in your country?

Status checked 2024/03/07:

If you want to watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on a streaming service library outside your country location, you can use a VPN to access it and bypass geoblocks.

How to get instant access to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds:

  • Sign up for ExpressVPN and download the app.
  • Connect to a server from the respective country.
  • Watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

If you enjoyed season one of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , you’ll be happy to hear that season two is premiering this June. If you want to know how and where to watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , this guide has you covered. We’ll point you to both seasons, in case you’re new to the series, and we’ll also mention if there’s a way to watch it for free.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set before the original series that starred William Shatner as Captain Kirk. In this series, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is at the helm of the USS Enterprise.

This guide will not only tell you where you can stream both seasons of Strange New Worlds , but it will also show you how to access them if you’re in a country where they’re not available. A virtual private network (VPN) is the answer, and if you’re in a hurry, we recommend using the best VPN , ExpressVPN. If you want to know more, read on.

Where to Watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

If you want to watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds online but can’t get access, you’ve likely come across a geoblock . These are how streaming platforms control which regions have access to certain content — or sometimes, an entire service.

Let’s take Netflix as an example. It’s available in almost 200 countries, but each library is different. Certain shows and movies might be available in one country, but not another. This is the same for other streaming services too, and it all depends on which service holds the right to air the content in each country.

It’s a bit of a pain, but thankfully, there’s a way around it: You can use a virtual private network to disguise your true location by changing your IP address . This will make it appear as if you’re in the country where the content you want is available. We have a step-by-step guide on how to do this further down.

Which Streaming Services Have Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ?

The first episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season two premieres on June 15. It will stream exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and other countries like the U.K., Australia and France, with new episodes coming out every week. If you’re a new Paramount Plus subscriber, you can get a free seven-day trial. In Canada, Strange New Worlds premieres on Crave, which also has a free seven-day trial.

star trek strange new worlds paramount plus

If you’re new to the series, you can also watch the first season on Paramount+, as well as many other series and movies from the Star Trek franchise, such as Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Discovery .

You can also rent or buy individual episodes or the whole first season on services like Apple TV, Amazon, Google Play and Vudu.

Season three of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will also premiere on Paramount Plus, but we don’t have an official date for that yet.

Is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on Netflix?

No, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is not available on Netflix. However, you can find other Star Trek content on some Netflix libraries, such as Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: Voyager on Netflix Australia. We’re not sure if Strange New Worlds will ever be available on Netflix, but it’s always a good idea to check, since licensing agreements change all the time.

How to Access Other Netflix Libraries

Since Netflix’s content changes so much, it’s a good idea to check if something is available there yourself. However, it’s not always as simple as logging in and searching the library. To check if a show or movie is available on Netflix in a country other than where you’re located, you need the help of a VPN.

With a VPN, you can connect to a server in another country and change your Netflix region . When you log in to your Netflix account after connecting to another server, you will see that country’s library. You can switch to different countries and log in to Netflix each time to check if the content you want is there.

How to Watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for Free

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a pretty new series, and it’s not available on free streaming services like Pluto TV. The only way you can watch it online for free is by using a Paramount+ free trial (or that of another service like CraveTV).

If you’re in a country where Paramount+ is not available, you can use a VPN to access it. Plus, most VPNs offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, meaning you can use the service for free.

Keep in mind, though, that new episodes air weekly, so a seven-day free trial won’t be enough to watch the whole series for free. What you can do, though, is wait until the season finale and then use the free trial to binge-watch the series.

How to Watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds With a VPN

Although Paramount+ is available in many regions, there are still a few where it’s not accessible. Plus, in some regions, such as Canada, the series is available on another service instead.

With a VPN, you can access the second season on Paramount Plus from anywhere in the world. The following steps show you how to connect to a VPN server and watch the show on Paramount Plus in the U.S. with the best streaming VPN , ExpressVPN. These steps will be similar for accessing other services.

Go to the ExpressVPN website and sign up for one of its plans . For the best overall value, choose the annual plan. There’s a 30-day money-back guarantee in case you don’t like it.

The Best VPNs for Watching Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

To have the best chance of accessing Paramount+ and watching without interruptions, you need a VPN that can handle streaming . ExpressVPN is our top VPN for the task , but NordVPN is another good contender . Let’s take a look at them both.

1. ExpressVPN

Expressvpn usa dallas

  • Unlocks all streaming apps
  • Easy-to-use app
  • Fast speeds
  • Expensive plans

ExpressVPN is the best overall VPN. Its speeds are fast and it can easily unblock streaming services, meaning you hardly notice you’re even connected via a VPN. It also has a large server network, meaning you can access content from many different countries. You’ll be safe while doing so due to ExpressVPN’s strong security.

It has an app for pretty much any device, and they’re all easy to use, even for beginners . That said, its high price can put people off. The monthly plan costs about the same as competitors, but where other providers offer a large discount on longer plans, ExpressVPN’s is still expensive.

Still, the reliability and ease of use are worth every cent. You can read our ExpressVPN review if you’re not quite convinced, or try it for yourself with the 30-day money-back guarantee.

  • Unlimited GB

nordvpn us servers

  • Unblocks streaming apps
  • Has the fastest speeds
  • Affordable long-term plans
  • Mobile interface isn’t great

If ExpressVPN is a little too costly, consider NordVPN. It can easily access streaming services and its speeds are, on average, faster than ExpressVPN’s. You also get access to thousands of servers in 60 countries and benefit from top-notch security features.

NordVPN’s app comprises a nifty interactive map that you can use to select servers around the world. Unfortunately, while it’s great on desktop, the map interface doesn’t work quite as well on mobile, making it difficult to choose servers.

It’s not something that should sway your decision too much, though, and NordVPN has an affordable two-year plan available. Yes, it means signing up for two years from the get-go, but there is a 30-day money-back guarantee in place for peace of mind. You can read our NordVPN review for more details.

Cast, Characters & Plot: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2

Star Trek has become a large brand since the days of Captain Kirk in the original series, with other Starfleet Command Captains, such as Jean-Luc Picard and Kathryn Janeway, becoming familiar faces.

New show Star Trek: Strange New Worlds debuted in 2022 and is a spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery . It follows Captain Pike and his crew on the USS Enterprise, traveling around the galaxy and exploring new worlds, years before the Kirk era. Both seasons include 10 episodes, and season two will continue to follow Captain Pike on his journey.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’ve watched every Star Trek movie and show that was ever made or you’re a newbie to the franchise, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season two is sure to be a hit, like the first season before it. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: everything we know about the Star Trek prequel

The latest intel on Original Series prequel Strange New Worlds – including its release date and mysterious Khan connections.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2

The adventures of the USS Enterprise didn’t start with James T Kirk. Star Trek : Strange New Worlds is set around a decade before he embarked on the most famous five-year mission in TV history, and puts his predecessor – Christopher Pike – back in the captain’s chair.

Pike first appeared in original Star Trek pilot ‘The Cage’ back in 1966, but it was his comeback in Star Trek: Discovery’s second season (where he was played by Anson Mount) that earned him his own spin-off show. Pike and fellow ‘Cage’ veterans Number One (played by Rebecca Romijn) and Spock (Ethan Peck inheriting the role made famous by Leonard Nimoy) proved so popular with fans that Paramount Plus decided to make Star Trek: Strange New Worlds the latest addition to Trek’s rapidly expanding shared universe .

And when it launches later this year, the show will feature a few more iconic names from the ’60s, including Nurse Chapel, Dr M’Benga and a genuine Trek legend in the form of Uhura. There’s also a mysterious crew member called La’an Noonien-Singh, whose surname has a special resonance for fans of the final frontier.

With producers promising less serialized storytelling than Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds looks set to get back to the cosmos-exploring traditions of the Original Series and The Next Generation. Here’s everything we know so far – hit it!

What is it? A Star Trek: Discovery spin-off following the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike, science officer Spock and first officer Una Chin-Riley (better known as Number One) on the USS Enterprise, around a decade before James T Kirk takes command.

Release date: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will beam onto Paramount Plus on May 5, 2022 – after Star Trek: Discovery season 4 and Star Trek: Picard season 2 have finished boldly going.

Cast: Alongside its familiar trio of lead characters (still played by Discovery's Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn), six new crew members will be taking their places on the Enterprise bridge. Read more about them below.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds release date

Star trek: strange new worlds release date: may 2022.

It's so long ago that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds got its greenlight (May 2020) that Paramount Plus was still known as CBS All Access at the time.

Unfortunately, coronavirus significantly delayed its departure from Spacedock, and the show didn't make it in front of the cameras until March 2021. Production on Strange New Worlds' 10-episode first season eventually wrapped in October 2021, as confirmed in a video announcement from star Anson Mount:

Now the wait for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is almost over. StarTrek.com confirmed on January 18, 2022 that the new voyages of the USS Enterprise will boldly go onto Paramount Plus in the US on Thursday May 5, 2022 – coinciding with the conclusion of Starfleet stablemate Picard's second season.

Jess Bush, who'll play Nurse Christine Chapel in the show, celebrated the announcement by posing in one of the Enterprise's Jefferies Tubes with co-star Christina Chong (La'an Noonien-Singh).

While we know Strange New Worlds will stream on Paramount Plus in the US, it may vary depending on where you are. The streamer is set to launch in the UK in 2022, and we'd expect to see Strange New Worlds debuting on there – especially after the recent controversial announcement that Discovery's fourth season has been shifted from its traditional international home on Netflix, to help launch Paramount Plus around the world.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds trailer

Is there a star trek: strange new worlds trailer.

There's no sign as yet, but with less than three months until the series' launch, it can't be long until we get to see a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds trailer. Indeed, with Star Trek: Discovery returning from its mid-season break and Picard's second season kicking off in early March, Paramount have a pair of tentpoles they can hang a promo off.

That said, journalists at the show's Television Critics Association panel on February 1, 2022 were treated to first-look footage focussing on Cadet Nyota Uhura (played by Celia Rose Gooding), the character made famous by Nichelle Nichols in the Original Series. Den of Geek reported that most of the bridge crew were also accounted for in the clip.

Back in September 2021, the Star Trek Day event also unveiled a brief teaser introducing the cast. It contains a few stills from the new series, including a glimpse at the new-look USS Enterprise uniforms – a modern riff on the classic gold, blue and uniforms we saw in ’The Cage’ and the original series.

Going back even further in time, leads Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn beamed in an announcement video in May 2020:

As you’d expect, the party line was very much that the show exists because of fan demand. “Without you this wouldn’t be happening,” says Peck, while Mount explains a bit about the tone of the series. “[It’s] a classic Star Trek show that deals with optimism and the future.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds poster: the frontier is waiting

While Paramount are keeping us waiting for a trailer, the tantalizing new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds poster is doing more than enough to get us excited about the show. It features Captain Pike on horseback in what looks like his home in the Mojave desert – but the real excitement comes from what's in the sky above him. The iconic USS Enterprise is hovering in front of a pair of alien worlds – and, no doubt, several new life forms and new civilizations.

If the "The frontier is waiting" tagline isn't enough to get Trek fans firing up their warp drives, chances are nothing will.

A post shared by Star Trek (@startrek) A photo posted by on

“We wanted [the poster] to reflect that the [concept] of the final frontier is at just the beginning,” executive producer (and Star Trek's de facto commander-in-chief) Alex Kurtzman told the show's TCA panel (via Syfy ) . “We think it brings the sense of nostalgia hope, optimism, exploration and sense of adventure."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast

Star trek: strange new worlds cast: who’s beaming onto the enterprise bridge.

The principal Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast looks like this:

  • Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike
  • Ethan Peck as Mr Spock
  • Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley/Number One
  • Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel
  • Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh
  • Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura
  • Melissa Navia as Lt Erica Ortegas
  • Babs Olusanmokun as Dr M'Benga
  • Bruce Horak as Hemmer

Ever since Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was confirmed in 2020, we've known that three actors would be reprising their roles from Discovery.

Anson Mount is back in the captain’s chair as Captain Christopher Pike. Meanwhile, after proving himself worthy of donning the pointy ears that once belonged to Leonard Nimoy, Ethan Peck returns as Spock. Rebecca Romijn continues as first officer/helmsperson Number One.

A ‘start of production’ video released in March 2021 introduced five other members of the cast:

The five new additions to the USS Enterprise bridge crew are Melissa Navia (from Dietland), Celia Rose Gooding (Jagged Little Pill), Christina Chong (Doctor Who, Line of Duty), Babs Olusanmokun (Black Mirror), and Jess Bush (Skinford).

At the Star Trek Day panel in September 2021, it was finally confirmed who each of them would be playing.  We also learned that the full name of Number One is Una Chin-Riley – the first time this has been confirmed in the character’s 56-year history.

Intriguingly, three of the new cast members are playing characters who – like, Pike, Number One and Spock – were first established in the 1960s.

The most famous of these roles goes to Celia Rose Gooding, who plays a younger version of Nyota Uhura, the Enterprise communications officer famously portrayed by Nichelle Nichols in the original series and first six Star Trek movies. (Guardians of the Galaxy's Zoe Saldana took on the role in JJ Abrams' rebooted Trek.)

Gooding explained to the assembled journalists at the TCA event in February 2021 that this will be a much less experienced version of the communications officer we saw serving alongside Captain Kirk in the Original series.

“Nichelle had a level of understanding and clarity [in her portrayal], but we're showing different parts of her humanity, which isn't as sure and asks questions as we go along,” the actress explained. “Getting to represent an iconic character in a multi-faceted way is an honor and now we're getting to see other sides of Uhura that go outside of the limitations set for Black women in the '60s."

Babs Olusanmokun plays Dr M'Benga (originally played by Booker Bradshaw), a character who filled in as the Enterprise's chief medical officer when Dr McCoy was absent in the original series. Jess Bush, meanwhile, inherits the role of Nurse Christine Chapel, who worked alongside McCoy in the Enterprise Sick Bay.

Chapel is one of two Strange New Worlds characters who were originally played by Majel Barrett-Roddenberry back in the 1960s – the other is Number One, who made her one-and-only vintage Trek appearance in 'The Cage'. (Barrett-Roddenberry also went on to play Lwaxana Troi and voice the Enterprise computers in The Next Generation.)

Of the Starfleet newbies, Bruce Horak's Hemmer is a member of the Andorian species. The fact he's wearing a red shirt – aka Star Trek's sartorial kiss of death – doesn't bode well for his life expectancy. The same could be said for Melissa Navia's Lt Erica Ortegas.

The most mysterious addition to the cast, however, is Christina Chong's La'an Noonien-Singh. The fact she shares a surname with The Wrath of Khan's Big Bad can't be a coincidence, but seeing as Trek canon tells us the cryogenically frozen 20th century villain won't be thawed out until after Kirk has taken command of the Enterprise, it's unclear how they're linked – but there definitely is a connection.

"She's related to Khan for sure, and, uh, the deal will unfold...” co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman confirmed at a Television Critics Association panel in February 2022 (via the Hollywood Reporter ).

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds already has its first great mystery...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds story

What can we expect to see in the star trek: strange new worlds story.

Star Trek: Discovery spoilers ahead – proceed with caution if you haven't seen season 2.

Pike, Spock and Number One have been part of the Star Trek story even longer than James T Kirk – they were on board the Enterprise in original Star Trek pilot ‘The Cage’, unaired in the ’60s and set more than a decade before Kirk’s famous five-year mission. Jeffrey Hunter, Leonard Nimoy and Majel Barrett originated the three roles.

While we know that the trio have been together at least three years by the time Star Trek: Strange New Worlds kicks off and that a tragic fate awaits Pike – more on that later – most of their voyages remain undocumented. That means it’s prime storytelling territory and – after the more serialized Discovery and Picard – a chance for Trek to get back to the standalone stories of its earlier years.

“We’re going to try to harken back to some classical Trek values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic,” executive producer Akiva Goldsman (and director of the Strange New Worlds pilot episode) told Variety in May 2020. “Obviously, we will take advantage of the serialized nature of character and story building. But I think our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either Discovery or Picard.”

The ability to visit a huge galaxy of, well, strange new worlds, should allow the show to feel different from week to week – after all, this versatile formula is a big reason for the franchise’s longevity.

“We want to do Star Trek in the classic mode; Star Trek in the way Star Trek stories were always told,” fellow EP Henry Alonso Myers said at a Star Trek Day panel (via TrekMovie ). “It's a ship and it's traveling to strange new worlds and we are going to tell big ideas science fiction adventures in an episodic mode. So we have room to meet new aliens, see new ships, visit new cultures..."

Strange New Worlds won't be entirely devoid of serialization, however, as writer Akela Cooper explained: “While we'll have individual one-off plots, the character arcs are what's going to carry us through in a more serialized fashion. There's probably one point that we will be sprinkling through this series until we actually get to the episode. And that's all I can say about that.”

Goldsman explained a bit more about the structure of the show in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter in April: “If you think back to the original [Star Trek] series, it was tonally more liberal – I don‘t mean in terms of politics but it could sort of be more fluid. Like sometimes Robert Bloch would write a horror episode. Or Harlan Ellison would have ‘City on the Edge of Forever’, which is hard sci-fi. Then there would be comedic episodes like 'Shore Leave’ or ‘The Trouble with Tribbles’. So [co-showrunner] Henry Alonso Myers and myself are trying to serve that. We’ve all become very enamored, myself included, with serialized storytelling. Picard is deeply serialized but Strange New Worlds is very much adventure-of-the-week, but with serialized character arcs.”

Going on Mount’s performance in Discovery, Pike is the ideal captain for an optimistic mission of exploration.

“The writers have done a magnificent job of establishing this captain as his own iteration of what a Starfleet captain should be, independent of other captains in canon,” the actor said at the TCA panel (as reported by Syfy ). “Humility is a big part of his character. And his father was a science teacher and scholar of comparative religion, so exploration is a big part of Pike. He’s looking at the things that made us see what’s next over the horizon? Are we searchers or conquerors?”

We can also expect to see a Spock more prone to displays of emotion than his Original Series counterpart, as the younger version of the character struggles to balance his logical Vulcan side with his human urges.

Indeed, in ‘The Cage’, Number One was the more buttoned-up, logical member of the crew – her personality traits passing to the Vulcan when Star Trek went to series. “She's way more complex than y'all know,” actor Rebecca Romijn teased in the cast introduction video released on Star Trek Day, and she expanded on the theme in the panel.

“'The Cage' being such an old pilot, the writers have this very unique opportunity where they've had this character that's existed since the beginning of the canon, but she's never been written,” Romijn pointed out. “I can't wait to find out how vast her skill set is. What are the arrows in her quiver? My number one question is, 'What's her backstory?’ [The writer's room] floated an idea for Number One's backstory that I'm not going to share right now because it blew my mind when they said it.”

Despite being made more than half a century after the Original Series, the look of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will echo those early ’60s designs – from the Enterprise starship interiors to the Starfleet uniforms.

“It’s a fine line because, obviously, we want to keep continuity with the storytelling and the style, but we also want Strange New Worlds to be a different show,” Goldsman told the Hollywood Reporter. “It’s not Discovery. There are a few more reach-backs [to the Original Series] and the uniforms have been adjusted slightly, the sets are slightly different. Remember, the Enterprise existed as a little piece [of Star Trek: Discovery], but now it’s its own object. When you close your eyes and think of the key sets and situations that you think of the Original Series, that’s what we’re looking to do.”

Intriguingly, at this point in the Star Trek timeline , Kirk and other members of the original crew must be out there somewhere in the universe, so the smart money would be on a few headline-grabbing (recast) guest appearances – as the older members of the Original Series line-up, McCoy and Scotty would seem prime candidates.

If a few familiar faces do turn up, however, we may have to wait a while to see them, with Goldsman telling the TCA panel that bringing classic characters back into the fray isn't a priority.

“We’re starting wth this crew and don’t want to bring folks into the show to be splashy,” he said. “We want to dig deeply into the characters in this ensemble. We’re open to widening our arms, but right now, and this is said in the best possible way, what you see is what you get."

Perhaps the biggest elephant on the Enterprise bridge, however, is Pike’s tragic story…

When we meet him in Original Series two-parter ‘The Menagerie’, it’s revealed that he’s been left severely disabled by a radiation leak. In Discovery, he’s forced to endure a vision of that future, so it'll be intriguing to see how that knowledge preys on his mind, and how much it plays into Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ story.

“The most honest thing I can say is, I'm still figuring out,” Mount explained at Star Trek Day. “Pike didn't just learn how he dies, he learns in what circumstances. So we do know that at some point he's going to be presented with a promotion opportunity to Fleet Captain. And he has to accept that in order for the fate to come into existence. So what is it that's going to allow him, both in terms of circumstance and emotion, to accept that promotion? It's a tough question but I think we'll figure it out together.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 is already confirmed

The show hasn't even aired yet and Strange New Worlds: season 2 has already been confirmed by Paramount Plus via StarTrek.com . In fact, the streaming service is so engaged by the prospect of a follow-up season that it's already shooting – one journalist at Strange New Worlds' TCA panel on February 1, 2022 noted that Ethan Peck was wearing his Vulcan ears and costume because he was already working on the new season.

At the #StarTrekStrangeNewWorlds #TCA22 panel, Ethan Peck has his costume and Vulcan ears on. He's currently shooting. February 1, 2022

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Release Date Confirmed, More Trek Coming Soon

Paramount Plus announces new details for Trek shows Picard, Discovery, Lower Decks and Prodigy.

Captain Pike beamed into Star Trek: Discovery, and takes the helm of new show Strange New Worlds in May.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds boards the USS Enterprise on Thursday May 5, as streaming service Paramount Plus confirms release dates and further seasons for Trek series Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy and Discovery.

Although there are now five Trek TV shows in production, Strange New Worlds will be the first set aboard the iconic starship since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2005. Before the new show even starts this summer, it's been confirmed for a second series.

Strange New Worlds stars a crew first seen as guest stars in Discovery, including Anson Mount as Capt. Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as first officer Number One and Ethan Peck as a young Mr. Spock.

Discovery was the first show to revive  Star Trek  for the streaming age, debuting on Paramount Plus when it was launched under the name CBS All Access. The series has now been renewed for a fifth season, ahead of the debut of new season 4 episodes on Thursday, Feb. 10.

Season 2 of Star Trek: Picard will premiere on Thursday, March 3. A third season is in production, although it was recently shut down when a large number of crew members tested positive for COVID.

There are also two animated Trek shows on at the moment. Irreverent animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks will return in summer 2022 with a 10-episode third season, and has been also been renewed for a fourth season. Star Trek: Prodigy, aimed at younger fans, is dropping new episodes every Thursday, with a further 10-episode second half of season 1 to be available later this year.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

In the ever-innovating landscape of television, what was old is suddenly new again.

Netflix is contemplating a subscription option with commercials. Hulu broke out of the small-batch programming rut by renewing a sitcom for a whopping 20-episode season. And, after a string of spinoffs characterized by gritty darkness or twisty mythologizing, Paramount+ may have cracked the Star Trek code with a new series that’s bright, optimistic and fundamentally episodic in nature.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Airdate: Thursday, May 5 (Paramount+)

Cast: Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Babs Olusanmokun, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Jess Bush, Melissa Navia

Creators: Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet

I actually kinda liked both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard . Both have ideas that interest me and performances I’m happy to support. But they’re both shows that, once I fell a little behind, I never felt any desire to catch up on.

I can’t say if Trek: Strange New Worlds is a series I’m going to want to pay close attention to every week, but that feels almost like what the new series is designed for. Through the five episodes sent to critics — half of the 10-episode first season — there are installments that hit and others that are completely forgettable. But the series has successfully and quickly established a small ensemble that’s easy to care about and a hopeful ethos that harkens back to the original Star Tre k series and the more procedural aspects of various popular spinoffs. It’s an amiable and entertaining throwback by intent and in execution.

Although the core ensemble of Strange New Worlds , created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, was introduced in the second season of Discovery , those episodes border on completely unnecessary when it comes to what is, on its most basic level, Star Trek: Muppet Babies .

A prequel to Gene Roddenberry’s mothership, Strange New Worlds puts us back on the slightly shinier, slightly newer USS Enterprise under the watch of Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ), Captain Kirk’s predecessor, suggesting Starfleet used to make leadership decisions primarily on bone structure. Pike is still a bit haunted from the Discovery incident in which he saw the cause and context of his death, 10 years in the future.

Carrying over from those Discovery episodes are Pike’s second-in-command Una “Number One” Chin-Riley ( Rebecca Romijn ) and Baby Spock (Ethan Peck), who make up the key leadership trust on the Enterprise, which is sent on deceptively simple exploratory missions to seek out new life and new civilizations — and to, as the new-fangled phrasing puts it, “boldly go where no one has gone before.” Their crew includes variably familiar future faces including Baby Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), a fresh-out-of-the-Academy communications prodigy, Baby Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush), security officer La’an Noonien Singh (Christina Chong), whose last name points to a distant relation to iconic franchise villain Khan, and more.

If you keep your ears open, you’ll hear mentions of many additional names and alien races from various pieces of the Star Trek universe, but the degree to which you want to obsess over connections is up to you. Strange New Worlds is, in the original series tradition, an encounter-of-the-week narrative as the crew learns about different alien cultures, some benign and some hostile, some with very, very direct allegorical connections to human life in 2022 and some just lizard creatures that want to eat us.

Each of the five episodes I’ve seen is different from the others, while also evocative enough of some of the most repeated structural tropes from the franchise that the Star Trek show this one often most closely resembles is the animated Lower Decks , which lovingly parodies those tropes. So there’s one of those episodes in which an alien infection runs rampant on the Enterprise and makes everybody behave strangely; several episodes in which different landing parties are isolated from the Enterprise and have to learn valuable lessons about not making assumptions; and at least one action-driven episode with a fearsome alien foe that’s mostly pew-pew-pew space blasting and laying the foundation for future antagonistic run-ins. And then there’s a wacky body-swap episode!

Perhaps because the effects work on Strange New Worlds is only average, I wasn’t blown away by any of the episodes that involved somewhat weightless ships and objects flying around in space blasting at each other. Meanwhile, anything depicting character trauma felt flat and prestige-by-the-numbers. But when Strange New World keeps things light — a description that doesn’t preclude plots set among warring races or potentially planet-ending cataclysms — the series is a pleasure and makes up for any CGI limitations with top-notch makeup, costuming and production design.

The cast is across-the-board sturdy, led capably by Mount’s Ken Doll-with-snark attitude. Romijn isn’t all that interesting in dramatic mode, but any time she gets to show a dose of levity, Number One works well. Although Spock’s droll exercises in logic have now been played indelibly by multiple actors over the years, Peck’s interpretation is a worthy one, and he’s especially good in the episodes featuring Vulcan love interest T’Pring (Gia Sandhu).

My favorite performances came from Chong, Gooding, Bush and Melissa Navia as Enterprise helmsman Erica Ortegas. Chong has a dark intensity that plays well whether the context is dramatic or comic, and her scenes with Romijn in the fifth episode are standouts. Bush has a wide-eyed openness and Navia something more wryly sardonic, and the contrast works well. And Gooding is just a general delight, funny and emotionally available, honoring the Nichelle Nichols original and making Uhura her own.

Pervasively progressive, but not so progressive as to alienate that portion of the Star Trek audience in denial that the franchise was always progressive, Strange New Worlds may aim for something less ambitious than the most recent Star Trek shows, but it’s also more successful. In a streaming universe, it’s a broadcast-friendly Star Trek , with a not-unwelcome emphasis on “broad.”

The Star Trek universe has exploded into the television space in recent years with a string of hit shows, and yet another new title is about to join the franchise ranks on Paramount Plus .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will follow Anson Mount's Captain Pike , who was introduced in the second season of Discovery , as he strives to "chart the stars, push the boundaries of what is known and what is possible" with his very own crew.

The long-awaited trailer for the series unveiled a more light-hearted tone to what we've seen from the other live-action Star Trek shows lately, specifically the noticeably more moody Discovery and Picard .

That may come as a pleasant surprise to some purists, who have complained that the latest outings haven't represented the optimistic tone of Gene Roddenberry's original Star Trek vision.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 1 Episode 10 Review: Maybe in Another Timeline

'Strange New Worlds' takes a page out of the Kelvin Universe for its introspective finale.

Editor's note: This review contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

For its first season finale, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds takes a page out of the Kelvin Universe and sends Captain Pike ( Anson Mount ) into an alternate timeline to teach him the necessity of his sacrifice. When Pike meets one of the young people who actually dies in the incident where Pike is destined to sacrifice himself, he sees the opportunity to save both himself and the child from that grim future. Before he can finalize that decision, however, Pike gets a ghosts-of-Christmas-future-style visit from none other than the version of himself that survives the tragic accident.

Future Pike tells our Captain that he does find a way to save everyone by writing them all letters so that they simply aren't present on the day that the accident would've ended their lives. But Admiral Pike — who happens to be sporting the uniform from the original series films — also tells him that that choice causes "catastrophic results." While our Pike is hesitant to understand how bad it could possibly be if everyone lives, the elder Pike offers him yet another glimpse into a possible future in order to explain the severity of the situation, revealing he was sent by the same Klingons that allowed him his first look at what's to come.

With a touch of a time crystal, Captain Pike is sent several years into the future where he's saved by the red alert alarm from performing a marriage ceremony between ensigns he does not recognize. Things immediately feel off when the Number One that reaches out to the Captain over comms is Spock ( Ethan Peck ) rather than Una ( Rebecca Romijn ). Right away things seem colder in this universe, more severe, as Pike tries to find his bearings without giving too much away. He confides in Spock immediately, assuming he can still trust the Vulcan at this point in the future. Spock is very deadpan as he tries to suss out whether the Captain has lost his mind or not, and Peck and Mount weave a certain amount of incidental humor into the scene.

RELATED: Why 'Strange New Worlds' Shouldn't Rely Too Much on Jim Kirk in Season 2

Pike proposes a mind meld and Spock sees the Captain's fate in the Prime timeline. He comes to the conclusion that Pike was sent to a turning point in their future where his command of the Enterprise leads to a disaster that might have been prevented by the captain meant to take over after Pike's accident. Their mission is to essentially let the bad thing happen, so they understand why it must be prevented. Things get serious when a ship, complete with a never-before-seen cloaking device, destroys a Federation outpost, seemingly without provocation.

This episode plays like an action movie, similar to the Kelvin-verse titles while offering a new take on an alternate universe derived from The Original Series and Next Generation films, complete with a brand new Captain Kirk ( Paul Wesley ). "A Quality of Mercy" offers a lot of thrilling references to the franchise it's built upon while also telling an interesting and entertaining story that ultimately doesn't ever actually happen. This introduction of Pike to Kirk will only be remembered by the elder Captain, so it will naturally shape the moment when they meet in the Prime timeline. Pike isn't quite sure what to make of the "brash young Captain," and it makes him suspicious of each of Kirk's decisions.

When the Romulans — whom these characters are all just now learning look mighty similar to Vulcans — attack Kirk's ship, Pike and the Enterprise must fight to save the crew of the Farragut. La'an ( Christina Chong ), now a commander, comes aboard the Enterprise and is instantly warmer than we've ever seen her be — so maybe this universe isn't entirely gloomy. Kirk and Pike continue to clash because of their differing leadership styles — Kirk is decidedly riskier than Pike is, yet both of their decisions as Captains have merit. Pike, who at this point does still have a significant amount of wisdom over a young Jim Kirk, does still learn that sometimes the risk of something is worth the reward, whereas this version of Kirk begins to see the merits of Pike's more peaceful approach.

This episode also highlights how easily things can spiral out of control when people are more married to "the way we do things" than caring whether it's the right thing — and how easily harsh regimes can crush voices that speak of peace and communication when given the power they demand. Pike and the Enterprise escape, but not without heavy loss and a declaration of war from the Romulans. In this version of the future Pike's optimism leads to unspeakable devastation as he realizes if he saves himself he essentially does doom the entire galaxy. Future Pike returns once more to reveal that the cost of saving himself, in any timeline, leads to him trading his fate for Spock's — all but ensuring that Pike will go through with what is destined for him.

As one of the most beloved characters in the history of media, it's incredibly moving, if achingly melancholy, to learn just how far anyone who knows Spock is willing to go to keep him safe. Pike makes that clear to the science officer upon his return to the prime timeline without ever giving any details away, and it's a very touching moment. As Pike re-enters his own life with a renewed sense of determination to make the most of the time he has left, he's almost immediately faced with another life-altering turning point.

Notably missing from Pike's trip to the future was his trusted first officer Una Chin-Riley. At every point where he could ask someone he trusts, Pike asks: what happened to Una? And each answer paints a more grim version of her future — La'an reveals she's not allowed contact, and Spock later says she's been sentenced to a penal colony for her deception. Upon his return, just as he's basking in the comfort of being back here with his beloved crew, Pike and Una are called down to the transport room to meet Pike's sometimes-romantic interest Captain Batel ( Melanie Scrofano ), who also made an appearance at the start of this season.

Batel reveals that Una is under arrest and Starfleet has learned that she's a genetically modified Illyrian — following up on that particular Chekhov's secret that was loaded in at the beginning of the season. The tension in this final moment is genuinely palpable, as Pike watches the woman he's sleeping with arrest the only person he allows himself to be vulnerable in front of. The captain tries to block the arrest, but Number One doesn't allow him to get himself court-martialed on her behalf. The episode ends on that thrilling cliffhanger, as Pike assures Batel that "this isn't over." Pike knows Una's future in the dark timeline he just returned from, and it's clear that he has no plans of letting that happen in this version of reality.

Watching Pike decide to use every bit of life he has left to save the people that are closest to him, like Una and Spock, makes the already warm and genial captain that much more endearing. Throughout the season, Pike has come off as a very friendly and open Captain, to the point where he's even referred to as Starfleet's boy scout. But beneath that open gentility beats a heart of steel and an unwavering moral compass, making him a formidable opponent for anyone that threatens what he believes is right.

Overall, Season 1 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is incredibly solid, with its main drawback being that the season was too short. While many of the ensemble characters got an episode centered around their backstories, the season relied primarily on the relationship between Spock and Pike. With that particular emotional connection now truly solidified, Season 2 has the opportunity to really dive into these other incredible characters whose stories we've only barely begun to explore like Una, La'an, and M'Benga ( Babs Olusanmokun ). Ending with Una's fate up in the air, albeit with a very determined Captain Pike, is a thrilling way to end the season, while solidifying Pike's commitment to the people he loves and keeping us on the edge of our seats as we await the show's return.

Beau DeMayo , the showrunner and executive producer behind Disney+’s upcoming animated series “ X-Men ’97,” has been fired ahead of the March 20 premiere, Variety has confirmed.

DeMayo had completed work on Seasons 1 and 2 of “X-Men ’97” ahead of his exit. He will not attend the March 13 Hollywood premiere for the show. His Instagram account, on which he had been previewing artwork and answering fan questions about “X-Men ’97,” has also been deleted.

DeMayo also wrote on the fellow Marvel and Disney+ series “Moon Knight,” starring Oscar Isaac, and the upcoming feature film “Blade,” starring Mahershala Ali. His other credits include “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” Netflix’s live-action “The Witcher” starring Henry Cavill, the animated film “The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf” and two animated “League of Legends” shorts, “Absolution” and “Before Dawn.”

Several original cast members of “X-Men: The Animated Series” are returning for “X-Men ’97” more than 30 years after the series finale. The new show picks up where the ’90s Saturday morning cartoon ended: Professor Charles Xavier is believed to be dead, and his arch rival Magneto has assumed control of his last will and testament. The X-Men, comprised of Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Jubilee, Beast, Gambit, Morph, Bishop and more, must also battle new foes in a world that fears them.

Hollywood Reporter first broke the news.

Star Trek Discovery season 5 spoiler-free review: "As if Strange New Worlds and Picard season 3 never happened"

Star Trek Discovery

GamesRadar+ Verdict

The last leg of Discovery’s five-year mission gets off to an unremarkable start. Season 5 has some spectacular moments and no shortage of potential, but the ponderous storytelling will make you feel like Strange New Worlds and the brilliant Picard season 3 never happened.

Why you can trust GamesRadar+ Our experts review games, movies and tech over countless hours, so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about our reviews policy.

This spoiler-free review is based on Star Trek: Discovery season 5 episodes 1-4.

A lot of water has flowed under the (starship) bridge since the Disco crew fixed the Federation’s Dark Matter Anomaly problem in the season 4 finale . Two years later, multiple seasons of Strange New Worlds , Picard and Lower Decks have shown us a more exciting vision of the final frontier, but the top brass on Discovery’s fifth and final season don’t appear to have received the subspace memo. As a result, the four episodes we’ve been given for review feel like they were created in a mirror universe – a place where phasers are set to earnest and everyone is (dare we say it) a little bit dull.

That’s not the opening paragraph we thought we’d be writing after an all-action start to the season, in which a spacesuited Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) finds herself clinging to the back of a warping starship. The story quickly flashes back four hours, to show how David Cronenberg’s enigmatic Dr Kovich – still, inexplicably, wearing a suit and tie in the distant future – interrupted a Federation shindig to dispatch the USS Discovery on a topper-than-top secret mission. (Just to emphasize how off-the-books this "Red Directive" assignment is, Kovich can only talk about it in a futuristic, sci-fi version of Get Smart’s Cone of Silence .)

At the risk of incurring the wrath of Kovich (or even Paramount Plus), we won’t go into story specifics here, but we can say the arc plot involves an 800-year-old Romulan spacecraft, an artifact of cosmic importance, and an Indiana Jones-esque race to stay ahead of the bad guys in an interplanetary treasure hunt. There’s also some old-school Trek problem-solving, ethical dilemmas, and some truly cinematic action sequences. Thought speeder bike chases on alien worlds were a Star Wars thing? Now Trek’s getting in on the act in spectacular style.

There’s no question these are highly promising building blocks, yet this opening quartet of episodes doesn’t come close to fulfilling their potential. Discovery’s quest is only a big deal because pivotal characters repeatedly remind us it is, while the nominal villains – a pair of resourceful thieves – never feel like a credible threat to the technological might of Starfleet.

And just as season 4’s DMA story arc strained to fill an entire season, there’s barely enough plot here to sustain a single episode of The Next Generation – something that doesn’t bode well for a 10-episode run. It’s only in the comparatively standalone fourth episode – a welcome throwback to the big sci-fi ideas of TNG and Voyager – that the storytelling switches off the autopilot to try something different.

Disco discontent

The USS Discovery remains a wonderfully supportive and inclusive working environment, but it’s also a little bland. Yes, a harmonious, efficient Starfleet crew is totally in tune with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s original vision for the future but – as many writers complained during the TNG era – it’s hard to write good drama without conflict.

Nobody’s expecting a return to the war footing of the show’s first season – where evil Captain Lorca ruled Discovery by fear – but now we’ve seen best buds Jean-Luc Picard and Will Riker have a barney on the bridge in Picard, there's surely room for a little more Disco discontent. A new cynical, mission-obsessed officer (played by Battlestar Galactica’s Callum Keith Rennie) does his best to shake things up, but it’s all a little too cuddly.

That wouldn’t matter so much if the characters were fun to be around, but these co-workers lack the easy chemistry of Trek’s finest. There’s been a humor deficit on board ever since Michelle Yeoh’s Philippa Georgiou departed for her Section 31 spin-off movie in season 3, but even Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) – characters who could traditionally be relied on for a tension-breaking one-liner – have lost their edge.

That said, there’s no shortage of romantic subplots, as Saru (Doug Jones) contemplates settling down with Ni’Var ambassador T’Rina (Tara Rosling), and Book (David Ajala) – who’s still in the Federation’s bad books after his treasonous acts in season 4 – is brought back into the fold, nominally to help Discovery’s mission but mostly to engineer a bit of tension with his ex, Michael.

Beyond the walls of Discovery, the show still struggles to make the most of its 32nd century setting. When the crew waved goodbye to the pre-Original Series era in the season 2 finale, it felt like an opportunity to broaden Trek’s horizons beyond its traditional 23rd/24th century stomping ground. It hasn’t really played out like that, as the Federation is still populated by the same old alien races, inhabiting worlds that rarely qualify as strange or new.

Iconic, genre-defining new races like the Borg or the shapeshifting Dominion aren’t created every day, but Discovery could at least try to give us a glimpse of the unknown. Indeed, aside from its fan-friendly McGuffin, season 5’s obsession with the past is holding Discovery back – when it comes to delivering precision-engineered nostalgia, it simply can’t compete with Strange New Worlds and Picard.

Genuine peril also remains elusive in a far-future where technology is so advanced that – to paraphrase Arthur C Clarke – it’s effectively magic. Does it matter if you lose a phaser if programmable matter can conjure a new one out of thin air? Are you ever in actual danger if you’re wearing a spacesuit loaded with enough gadgets to make Tony Stark jealous?

Don’t give up hope just yet, however. Star Trek has always been a franchise of optimism, and season 5 offers enough hints of something bigger – more exciting – on the horizon to suggest the series could still end on a high. But, seeing as the writers simply had to tune into Strange New Worlds, Picard and even Lower Decks for tips on crafting a more entertaining iteration of Trek, you have to wonder how Discovery’s final season has left Spacedock like this.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 debuts with a two-episode premiere on Thursday, April 4. New episodes will stream on Paramount Plus every Thursday.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Star Melissa Navia on "Mirror Ortegas"

Posted in: Paramount+ , Preview , streaming , TV | Tagged: paramount , preview , season 3 , star trek , strange new worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Melissa Navia on what Mirror Erica Ortegas would be like: "You wouldn’t want to mess with her."

Kicking off back in December and expected to roll on into early spring, production on the third season of Paramount+'s Anson Mount (Pike), Rebecca Romijn (Una Chin-Riley) & Ethan Peck (Spock)-starring Star Trek: Strange New Worlds continues rolling on – and you know what that means, right? Yup, it's time to get as much intel out of the cast, show's creators & writers – and for them to stay in spoiler-free mode as long as possible. For this go-around, Melissa Navia (Lt. Erica Ortegas) has found a way to walk the line between the two – sharing her thoughts on what a "Mirror Universe" version of Ortegas would be like during a convention in San Francisco from over the weekend.

"You wouldn't want to mess with her," Navia states matter-of-factly – giving us the impression that she's thought about this before. "I would love that. Especially because I've never really played any villains, and I would love to do that. I can't even fully articulate how it would look… I think she would be a force to be reckoned with, and I wouldn't want to go up against her. For me, that would be fantastic as an actor to play that. There is something about a villain that is captivating, as well as that dark side. So I don't know what it would look like, but it would be pretty great, and I hope the writers are thinking about something like that in the future."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Showrunners on Season 3 & More

"We're going to keep going. We genre hop. So where we haven't been, we will try to go. Henry's watchwords for Season 2 were, 'Let's do Season 1, just bigger and better.' That's become the truth of Season 3. We're always doing the thing that we do best, which is secretly just a lot of relationship stories in space. We'll keep unfolding those, hopefully in ways that are different, in the same way, that the tones of our episodes will be different. But yeah, ambition will taper off only when we can't figure out a thing to do we haven't done before," Akiva Goldsman shared with Variety back in August when asked what boundaries he and co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers were thinking of taking on next season. Myers added, "The joy of doing the show — Akiva and I spent a lot of time on this — is trying to come up with something really great and cool and different for our actors. The more challenging stuff you bring them, the harder they will work. We want to bring them great material so that they will continue to do incredible things."

With the Season 2 finale now streaming, Myers discussed how confident the creative team was about finding resolutions to the cliffhangers in play heading into the third season. "The best way to approach this is with a deep sense of confidence. We were very upfront with all of our folks internally about what we were doing. They were very supportive of it. We wanted it to be a surprise," the co-showrunner shared. "I remember how the ["Star Trek: The Next Generation" cliffhanger episode] 'The Best of Both Worlds, Part 1' made me feel. That was what we wanted to revisit for the audience, to really surprise them."

Myers continued, "By the time we were shooting that episode, the first season had come out, and it did very well. We were trying to take risks. We knew it was going to be challenging, but it's crazy if you don't try the challenging things. The opportunity when you have a show like this is to make it as interesting and surprising as you possibly can. Sometimes that just means taking risks. This was a big season of risks. So by the finale, we had done so many risks, it was kind of like, 'Yeah, sure!'"

Paramount+'s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is based on the years that Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ) manned the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise, following Pike, Science Officer Spock ( Ethan Peck ), and Number One ( Rebecca Romijn ) during the years before Captain Kirk boarded the U.S.S. Enterprise as they explore new worlds around the galaxy. The streaming series also stars Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Lt. Erica Ortegas, and Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M'Benga. The second season will also feature the return of special guest star Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk and new addition Carol Kane in a recurring role as Pelia. Jack Quaid (Boimler) & Tawny Newsome (Mariner) from "Lower Decks" will be crossing over in a live-action way this season, directed by none other than Jonathan Frakes .

Paramount+'s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 is produced by CBS Studios, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment. Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers serve as co-showrunners. Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet serve as executive producers in addition to Alonso Myers, Aaron Baiers, Heather Kadin, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth .

Star Trek Fans Spot Strange New Worlds And Discovery Phasers Detail

  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds reused the same phaser props from Star Trek: Discovery, which caused concern among fans who expected more advanced phasers in the new series.
  • Some fans argued that using the same phasers made sense because Section 31, who used the phasers in Discovery, had already engaged with the Gorn, suggesting the phasers were already advanced.
  • It's possible that while the phasers may have looked similar externally, they could have more advanced functionalities such as a newer emitter, bigger battery, and advanced frequency tuning.

Star Trek fans are very particular when it comes to phasers, so some were taken aback when they realized that the device shown in the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 finale is the same as those issued in Section 31 in one episode of Star Trek: Discovery season 2.

Phasers are an iconic and essential element of the Star Trek franchise. Starfleet personnel and other characters use these handheld energy weapons throughout the Star Trek franchise . Their design gives a futuristic appearance and makes them easily recognizable, as they are synonymous with the Star Trek franchise. That was why eagle-eyed fans immediately noticed that the assault phaser featured in Strange New Worlds season 2 was something familiar.

Star Trek Actor Reveals What It Will Take To Get A New Picard Spinoff Made

One fan ( Haphazard Melange ) took to Reddit and shared a fun fact about the assault phasers featured in Strange New Worlds in the Gorn Protocol Box. The netizen shared a snap and stressed they were the same phasers issued to Section 31 in Star Trek: Discovery season 2. The phasers are identical despite the different timelines between the Discovery and Strange New Worlds . The latter picks up where the former left off and provides a setup for Star Trek: The Original Series . Discovery 's timeline is between 2256 and 2258, while Strange New Worlds is set in 2259, leading to The Original Series that takes place in 2265. Considering the timeline, the phasers in Strange New Worlds should have been more advanced and different from those featured in Discovery . So, the fan's concern was valid.

The post on Reddit received mixed responses, with several wanting the online user who raised the concern to let it go as prop reuse. They believed the production was just being resourceful by using the existing props. However, a number also pointed out that utilizing the same phaser made sense because, before Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Section 31 had already engaged with the Gorn, suggesting that the phaser featured in Discovery was already advanced and utilizing them in Strange New Worlds was not a random reuse of props.

Phasers are highly versatile weapons capable of various settings and functions. Depending on the setting, they can stun, kill, vaporize, or cut through obstacles. This versatility makes them invaluable tools for Starfleet officers in various situations, from peaceful exploration to combat. They symbolize the ideals of Starfleet and the Federation and are designed to minimize casualties and preserve life whenever possible. Most importantly, they play a crucial role in the plot of Star Trek episodes and movies, so It is understandable why fans are critical of their design and functionality.

The concern being raised is valid. Star Trek fans expect more advanced and futuristic phasers in Strange New Worlds . However, the phasers given to Section 31 may already be advanced enough to handle the Gorn, hence the props being reused. Section 31 already used advanced technology like transporters, the holodeck, and memory-altering technology, so they likely had access to the latest prototypes and research. Also, it's possible that the phaser looked similar to those featured in Discovery externally but had more advanced functionalities. It probably has a newer emitter, a bigger battery, and more advanced frequency tuning. It's better not to be overly critical of the props and give it to production unless it becomes a real concern.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds streams on Paramount Plus.

Star Trek is a space exploration franchise created by Gene Roddenberry. The series has spanned shows like The Original Series, The Next Generation, and Voyager. More recently, developer Scopely came out with Star Trek Fleet Command, a mobile title where you can be captain of your ship.

There's a lot of different kids from a lot of different places. Some of them want to be there, some of them don’t want to be there. It’s gonna be a fundamental reinforcement of all the things we love about Starfleet, in general. You always want to ask yourself, 'Why this show now?' I think that one of the big things that certainly my 17-year-old son is facing, which is kind of a fundamental 'Star Trek' question, is, 'How did we get here? How has this generation inherited the mistakes from previous generations? And what are we gonna do to fix it, to build that optimistic future that is Roddenberry’s essential vision?' That is very much going to be at the heart of Starfleet Academy.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 set up the reopening of Starfleet Academy after a hundred years of its doors being closed because of The Burn. Many behind-the-scenes crew members are moving from Star Trek: Discovery to work on Starfleet Academy , but it's unclear if any cast members will appear in the new series, although Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) is a possibility since she has become a Starfleet Academy instructor. Star Trek on Paramount+ plans to take its time producing Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, but that does mean it may still be another two years before season 1 premieres.
