David Bowie – Brilliant Live Adventures (1995-1999) box set artwork

Released: 30 October, 20 November 2020; 15 January, 12 February, 12 March, 2 April 2021

Ouvrez Le Chien (Live Dallas 95)

No trendy réchauffé (live birmingham 95), liveandwell.com, look at the moon (live phoenix festival 97), something in the air (live paris 99), at the kit kat klub (live new york 99).

Brilliant Live Adventures (1995-1999) is a David Bowie box set, containing six live albums recorded during three tours in the 1990s.

The box set was announced on 2 October 2020, along with the physical release of Ouvrez Le Chien (Live Dallas 95) .

Unusually, the Bowie estate chose to release the live albums individually, and the empty box separately. Fans were disappointed at having to pay individual shipping for each item, which raised the total cost of the set considerably.

Furthermore, demand for the empty boxes was underestimated, and they sold out within hours of going on sale on 2 October, despite the price of £12/$18 for the CD box and £17/$28 for the vinyl.

In response, on 7 October davidbowie.com posted news of a second run of the boxes to meet demand:

As you are more than aware, last week we posted details of the Brilliant Live Adventures six album live set and the first release from it, Ouvrez Le Chien. Along with other associated merchandise, we also offered LP and CD sized slipcase boxes to house the releases for those that intended to buy the full set of six albums. Of course, estimating the demand for such a thing is far from an exact science. Even when trying to gauge quantities by asking people to register their interest beforehand, as did the DIG! site. Clearly we underestimated and all copies from both the Official David Bowie Store and the Dig! (Rhino) store have now sold out. HOWEVER… Due to the incredible interest and the fact that so many of you have been left disappointed, we will be manufacturing more of both slipcase boxes to meet the demand. The new batch won’t go on sale till the new year, around the time of the sixth and last release of the Brilliant Live Adventures campaign. We’ll post details of how to pre-order well before then. Thanks again for your enthusiasm and apologies for any distress caused.

Each of the Brilliant Live Adventures releases sold out quickly after going on sale. 6,000 compact disc and 4,000 vinyl editions were made available of each title.

The first Brilliant Live Adventures album was Ouvrez Le Chien (Live Dallas 95) , which had initially been available only on digital services from 3 July 2020.

On 10 October 2020, a limited edition physical release was announced. The compact disc and vinyl editions were released on 30 October 2020.

Ouvrez Le Chien (Live Dallas 95) contained sixteen songs, fourteen of which were recorded at the Starplex Amphitheater in Dallas, Texas, on 13 October 1995, during the Outside Tour. Two additional bonus tracks – ‘Moonage Daydream’ and a second version of ‘Under Pressure’ – were taped on 13 December at the NEC in Birmingham, England.

The second album in the set, No Trendy Réchauffé (Live Birmingham 95) , was announced on 9 November 2020, and was released on 20 November.

It was recorded on 13 December 1995 at the Birmingham NEC, on the final night of the Outside Tour. The title comes from a line in the song ‘Strangers When We Meet’ , which originally appeared on Bowie’s albums The Buddha Of Suburbia and 1.Outside .

The third BLA album, liveandwell.com , was originally released in September 2000 as a two-CD set which was given away to BowieNet subscribers.

In December 2020 a new vinyl and CD edition was announced, to be released on 15 January 2021. The reissue featured new artwork, including a cover photograph of David Bowie taken by Scarlet Page while rehearsing for his June 1997 shows at London’s Hanover Grand.

The fourth BLA title was Look At The Moon! (Live Phoenix Festival 97) , recorded in England on 20 July 1997. It was announced on Friday 29 January 2021 and went on sale the same day, ahead of its 12 February release.

Bowie performed an 18-song set at Phoenix, opening with ‘Quicksand’ from 1971’s Hunky Dory . The main set closed with ‘Little Wonder’ , and was followed with encores of ‘Dead Man Walking’ , covers of the Velvet Underground’s ‘White Light/White Heat’ and Laurie Anderson’s ‘O Superman’ , and finishing with ‘Stay’ from Station To Station .

Look At The Moon! was longer than the previous Brilliant Live Adventures , and was released as two-CD and triple vinyl sets.

The fifth album was Something In The Air (Live Paris 99) . It was recorded at the Élysée Montmartre in Paris, France on 14 October 1999, part of the Hours Tour.

The album was initially only on streaming services. It was announced on 6 August 2020, and was eight days prior to it becoming available. The full show was made available on 14 August 2020.

The physical release of Something In The Air (Live Paris 99) was announced on 24 February 2021. It went on sale two days later, ahead of its 12 March release date.

Demand went up with each Brilliant Live Adventures release, with vinyl copies of Something In The Air selling out within 30 minutes in the UK. This led to inflated prices on secondary markets, disappointing some fans who had invested in the previous titles but had been unable to complete the set.

The sixth and final album in the series was At The Kit Kat Klub (Live New York 99) . It was recorded on 19 November 1999 in front of an invite-only audience of fans and contest winners.

The album announced on 17 March 2021, and went on sale two days later, ahead of its 2 April release date.

The Kit Kat Klub release was not the full concert, and contained just 12 of the 17 songs performed. Furthermore, the 12-song set had been widely bootlegged previously, having been issued as a promotional CD by Virgin in 1999.

Demand was nevertheless high, and At The Kit Kat Klub (Live New York 99) sold out faster than any of the other BLA releases. Vinyl and CDs on Bowie’s online store and Rhino’s webstore sold out in minutes, as did the reissued vinyl slipcases for the complete set. Server crashes on the Warner webstore Dig, meanwhile, meant that many fans were left frustrated and disappointed. Shortly afterwards it was announced that the albums would receive a second pressing to meet demand.

Box set text

The back of the Brilliant Live Adventures (1995-1999) box reads as follows:

Brilliant Live Adventures contains six live albums providing an exciting snapshot of three 1990s Bowie tours, with two albums each from the 1995-1996 Outside World Tour , the 1997 Earthling World Tour and the millennium closing 1999 ‘hours…’ Promotional Tour . More than 30 years into his professional live career, Brilliant Live Adventures proves just how great a performer Bowie still was, even without the safety net of his most famous compositions. He had purged the majority of the better known songs in his canon following 1990’s Sound + Vision World Tour. A brave move which gave him the opportunity for a fresh start. And what a palate-cleansing rejuvenation it was, witnessed by the tracks contained herein. Brilliant Live Adventures takes us on a five year journey in which time over 180 shows were performed by an ever-evolving group of incredible musicians. Aside from songs from the three albums being promoted, enjoy a clutch of never previously played album tracks being aired in public for the first time on these tours, including ‘Teenage Wildlife’ , ‘Nite Flights’, ‘Jump They Say’ , ‘Always Crashing In The Same Car’ and ‘Can’t Help Thinking About Me’ , along with rarely performed songs like ‘Andy Warhol’ , ‘The Man Who Sold The World’ , ‘Joe The Lion’ , ‘Word On A Wing’ , ‘Drive-In Saturday’ and ‘Stay’ …all represented within Brilliant Live Adventures .

The title OUVREZ LE CHIEN (“open the dog” in French) originally appeared in the song ‘All The Madmen’ taken from The Man Who Sold The World album which celebrates its 50th anniversary later this year. Bowie also used the phrase in the lyrics of his 1993 single ‘Buddha Of Suburbia’, once again spelling “ouvre” without a Z. The Z was restored when the phrase and its English translation were prominently featured in the stage set of the 1995 Outside tour.

‘Something In The Air’ is not part of the BLA cycle. That was a standalone cash grab – sorry, release, available in both 24/96 as well as CD. BLA so far has had 3 titles announced: 1 – Dallas 1995 (Ouvrez Le Chien) 2 – Birmingham 1995 (No Trendy Rechauffe) 3 – Liveandwell.com 2018 remaster (this is actually a compilation, and again was previously available on CD from the Fan Club)

SORRY – Mea Culpa. ‘Something In The Air’ did not seem to get a physical release that I can find. It was streaming only, highest quality possible seems to be 16/44.1 though.

“Unlike others in the Brilliant Live Adventures series, the Kit Kat Klub release was not the full concert”

At least 3 of the BLA releases are not full concerts – Kit Kat, Ouvrez Le Chien, and LiveAndWell.com (which is a compilation).

David Bowie 1995-1996 Outside Tour

The Outside Tour, with David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails co-headlining, opened on 14 September 1995 at Meadows Music Theatre – Hartford, CT with Prick as support band. On selected dates Reeves Gabrels performed songs from his album, The Sacred Squall of Now in addition to performing with Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie. The opening of the concert tour preceded the release of the 1. Outside album which was released on 25 September 1995.

In a 2012 Rolling Stone reader’s poll, the tour (pairing Nine Inch Nails with Bowie) was named one of the top 10 opening acts in rock history.

Tour history

This tour was Bowie’s first since he retired his hits with his previous Sound+Vision Tour (1990). Bowie said, “We’re going to play some older material, sure, but not obvious things. I found, while rehearsing for the [Outside] tour, that older songs I haven’t played for years suddenly fit in with this new material quite well – things like … “Joe the Lion.” So I’m quite looking forward to it.” Other songs from Bowie’s back catalog that he performed during the tour include “Scary Monsters”, “Look Back in Anger”, “Andy Warhol” and “Breaking Glass”.

Bowie spoke on why he chose to tour with Nine Inch Nails:

I personally did like the combination of NIN and me, but my fans didn’t. Bad luck!! It also was an extremely young audience, between about 12 and 17 years old. My starting point was simply: I’ve just made an adventurous album, what can I do now to turn the concerts as adventurous. Looking at it in that way, it seemed logic to confront myself with the NIN audience. I knew it would be hard to captivate them by music they never heard, by an artist whose name was the only familiar thing.

Trent Reznor has gone on record numerous times as being heavily influenced by David Bowie,[5] and further collaborated with Bowie by remixing “The Hearts Filthy Lesson” and later on 1997’s “I’m Afraid of Americans” single. When asked in 1995 if his album Outside was influenced by Nine Inch Nails, Bowie answered, “the band that I was actually quite taken with was three guys from Switzerland call The Young Gods … I’d been aware of them previous to knowing about Nine Inch Nails.”

For the tour, Bowie went with a modest stage design (“some banners, some mannequins”) and avoided the theatrical presentation like his previous Glass Spider Tour in 1987 and Sound+Vision Tour in 1990.

Performance note

Bowie opened an interview for the tour with USA Today on the opening day of the tour, on 14 September 1995 with the question “How do you commit commercial suicide? Well, you do this: play songs from an album that hasn’t been released yet, and complement it with obscure songs from the past that you’ve never done on stage.”

During the tour, as Nine Inch Nails reached the conclusion of their performance, the two bands played together with both Nine Inch Nails and Bowie and his band performing “Subterraneans”, “Hallo Spaceboy” and “Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)”, followed by two Nine Inch Nails songs “Reptile” and “Hurt” after which Bowie continued with his own set alone.

Early in the tour, the “almost 100% Nails audience” provided a challenge to Bowie, who said “In those first weeks, we had to adjust emotionally to the fact that we were going to be challenged every night to get in sync with what people were coming to the show for. But then you start to recognize that if you’re going to continue, you’d better enjoy what you’re doing. The more we did that, the more it communicated to the audience. That’s how it went from survival to being a good tour.”

Other opening acts

For the European leg of the tour, Morrissey was enlisted to provide support until his disappearance before the Aberdeen Exhibition Centre performance on 29 November 1995. The support slot was filled on later dates by The Gyres, Echobelly, Placebo and a variety of local bands.

Live recordings

The 13 December 1995 performance at the National Exhibition Centre (Hall 5) – Birmingham, England, billed as the Big Twix Mix Show with Alanis Morissette, Lightning Seeds and Echobelly supporting was filmed by BBC TV with excerpts broadcast at a later date.

• David Bowie – vocals • Reeves Gabrels – guitar • Carlos Alomar – guitar, backing vocals • Gail Ann Dorsey – bass guitar, vocals • Zack Alford – drums • Mike Garson – piano • Peter Schwartz – synthesizer, musical director • George Simms – backing vocals, keyboards

David Bowie’s ‘Ouvrez Le Chien’ Live Album Set for Streaming Release

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

An unreleased David Bowie concert recording from 1995 will debut on streaming services July 3rd with the release of Ouvrez Le Chien (Live Dallas 95) .

The live LP — recorded at Dallas’ Starplex Amphitheater on October 13th, 1995 — captures the late icon midway through his tour in support of 1995’s Outside. The gig’s set list leans heavily on that Brian Eno co-produced album, with tracks like “The Voyeur of Utter Destruction (as Beauty),” “I Have Not Been to Oxford Town,” “I’m Deranged,” and “The Hearts Filthy Lesson.”

The concert also finds Bowie delivering updated takes on classics like “Teenage Wildlife,” “The Man Who Sold the World,” and “Andy Warhol.” The digital album features a front cover image photographed by Bowie’s wife Iman.

In addition to the Starplex Amphitheater show, a pair of songs from a Birmingham, England, concert from December 13th, 1995 — “Moonage Daydream” and “Under Pressure” — will also be included on Ouvrez Le Chien (Live Dallas 95) . Both tracks previously appeared as B sides on the “Hallo Spaceboy” single, but make their streaming debut with this release.

The Bowie estate most recently explored the singer’s Earthling -era live recordings with the LiveandWell.com  set .

TEENAGE WILDLIFE (LIVE DALLAS 95) from the album, is available to stream from 26th June. (https://lnk.to/DB-TWDallas) (Temp link in bio) OUVREZ LE CHIEN was recorded live at the Starplex Amphitheater, Dallas, 13th October, 1995, during the US leg of the Outside Tour. The phrase OUVREZ LE CHIEN (translating from the French to “OPEN THE DOG”), originally appeared in the song All The Madmen from The Man Who Sold The World (which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year), albeit without the z. Bowie also used the phrase for his 1993 song Buddha Of Suburbia, once again spelling “ouvre" without a Z. The Z was added when the phrase and its English translation were prominently featured in the stage set of the 1995 Outside Tour. OUVREZ LE CHIEN also features two bonus tracks Moonage Daydream and Under Pressure recorded live at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, 13th December, 1995. Previously available on the Hallo Spaceboy CD single, both tracks are making their streaming debut. The cover image of OUVREZ LE CHIEN was taken by @the_real_iman during the ’95 tour. David Bowie 1995 Live Concert ‘Ouvrez Le Chien’ Is Coming

by Paul Cashmere on June 28, 2020

Song from a 1995 David Bowie concert from Dallas’ Starplex Amphitheater will be released this coming Friday.

‘Ouvrez Le Chien’ was recorded during the ‘Outside’ tour with Nine Inch Nails on 13 October, 1995. Nine Inch Nails backed Bowie for the first five songs at the show. Those songs have not been included on this release. The second half minus Nine Inch Nails is the basis of this album. ‘I’m Deranged’ was played after ‘’Look Back In Anger’ at the concert but is moved down the track listing for this record and ‘A Small Plot of Land’ from the ‘Outside’ album is not on this record.

Ouvrez Le Chien Track List

Look Back in Anger (from Lodger, 1979) The Hearts Filthy Lesson (from Outside, 1995) The Voyeur of Utter Destruction (As Beauty) (from Outside, 1995) I Have Not Been to Oxford Town (from Outside, 1995) Outside (from Outside, 1995) Andy Warhol (from Hunky Dory, 1971) Breaking Glass (from Low, 1977) The Man Who Sold the World (from The Man Who Sold The World, 1970) We Prick You (from Outside, 1995) I’m Deranged (from Outside, 1995) Joe the Lion (from Heroes, 1977) Nite Flights (from Black Tie, White Noise, 1993) Under Pressure (from Queen’s Hot Space, 1982) Teenage Wildlife (from Scary Monsters and Super Creeps. 1980)

Recorded live at the Starplex Amphitheater, Dallas, October 13th, 1995.

It seems David Bowie’s wife, @the_real_iman, was comfortable on both sides of the camera, as evidenced by this wonderful photograph she took of her husband on the Outside Tour in 1995. DAVID BOWIE OUVREZ LE CHIEN (LIVE DALLAS 95) will be made available on all streaming services from 3rd July. TEENAGE WILDLIFE (LIVE DALLAS 95) from the album, is available to stream from 26th June…which it already is for many of you reading this. View this post on Instagram OUVREZ LE CHIEN STREAMING NEXT WEEK “A real life adventure worth more than pieces of gold…” Parlophone Records is proud to announce that DAVID BOWIE OUVREZ LE CHIEN (LIVE DALLAS 95) (a previously unreleased live album), will be made available on all streaming services from 3rd July. The Damned released the first ever UK punk single, “New Rose” off album Damned, Damned, Damned, in 1976, and were often overshadowed by their English punk counterparts.
