The Best Waterproof Motorcycle Tops

The fella above has to score 10/10 for improvisation but I’m not sure the police here in the UK would give you the credit you deserve if they saw you flying down the outside lane of the M40 wearing that setup.

A sudden downpour can ruin a good ride. If you have quality textile gear it should be waterproof but no matter how good your gear is, if you wear a waterproof top you’ll keep the rain from creeping in. A dry biker is a happy biker.

Not only that but if you’re doing a long day in the saddle or you’re going touring, it’s far better to use a waterproof top to deal with the rain and keep your kit dryer, as it will dry faster when you’re off the bike. No-one likes putting on damp gear the next morning..

Likewise, if you’re out for a summer blast in your leathers, you’ll be well protected in the event of a crash but they aren’t that great at keeping you dry. A waterproof top can be stashed in a stowaway bag, kept under your seat or in your tail pack, making it easy to chuck it on if you get caught in the rain.

With the market flooded (pun intended!) with different types of waterproof motorcycle jackets, it’s hard to know what to choose.

We’ve created this short guide with our best picks and handy hints to sink your teeth in to. What are you waiting for? Take on the rain!

Rich Rain Warrior Jacket

Built to withstand the worst.

The Richa Rain Warrior waterproof over jacket is designed to be worn over your jacket or leathers. It’s that bit chunkier than a single-layer thin top but it’s well made, 100% waterproof and offers good wind protection. It’s also recommended by RiDE magazine. You’ll be quite comfortable wearing this in a downpour.

Held Wet Tour Waterproof Jacket

Hi-viz waterproof with quality and style.

This high vis motorcycle jacket gives you added protection in dark conditions, thanks to its bright orange design. Storm cuffs prevent rain from getting up your sleeves and it comes with an integrated hood, two external pockets and one internal making it handy off the bike as well as on.

The Cheapest Waterproof Tops

If you’re on a really tight budget, then you could go for a non-motorcycle-specific waterproof top. You can find some decent-looking ones on Amazon for around £10.

However it’s worth noting that when you’re on the bike, your waterproof top is going to take a relative battering as you make progress at 50mph and not the maximum speed of 4mph that these non-bike jackets are designed for.

There are other drawbacks too, like the fact motorbike jackets are cut to give you plenty of room, they also don’t have hoods. If you have a hood you can’t stash away, it’ll flap around which is annoying and collect water too.

You’ve got to budget at least £20 to get a decent waterproof top. Anything less and you risk buying something that’s going to leak like a church roof or it’ll tear when you try and stretch it over your jacket in a lay-by in the middle of nowhere.

We’ve picked a couple of good-looking cheap motorcycle-focused options:

Oxford Rainseal All Weather Jacket / £26.99

This affordable motorbike waterproof jacket is fully lined, features adjustable Velcro cuffs and waist for a good fit. It won a RiDE Best Buy award too. Fluorescent yellow with reflective detailing means you’ll be visible from the moon.

Jet waterproof rain jacket / £19.99

With Velcro adjustable arms and cuffs, feel comfortable during your ride; lightweight and packs away easily in the supplied carry bag.

Is a rain suit a better choice?

If you want a bit more protection in the rain, then consider a one-piece rainsuit. A good one will be easy to get in to, with adjustable or elastic entry points and a long zip, meaning you can put it on over your leathers in seconds.

This Richa Typhoon Rain Overall is a top bit of kit, with excellent user reviews and a RiDE Best Buy award.

Waterproof tops: Ben's Top Tips

An external pocket can be handy but the more pockets you have the more chance you've got of water creeping in. A stuff sack will make it much easier for you to get your waterproofs under your seat or in your luggage. Not all waterproofs come with a storage bag but you can grab one for a couple of quid on Amazon. Go at least one size up from your usual jacket size to get a waterproof top that gives you plenty of room to move. Some jackets come with a removable hoody, so if you’re planning on using it off the bike, a hoody is a handy additional feature

Other great picks from our shortlist

There are a lot of waterproof tops on the market but not all of them are worth your cash. We’ve picked a few other great options below.

Rev’it Nitric 2 H2O Waterproof Jacket / £71.99

Draw corded hood and hem with waist straps for optimal fit and dryness make this jacket a great choice.

Dainese Strom Waterproof Jacket / £99.99

Super stylish option. Waterproof and breathable with added high vis design, you’ll be dry inside and out; just what you need if you’ve been caught in a downpour mid-journey.

Alpinestars Hurricane Rain Jacket / £62.97

Usual top quality from Alpinestars, the Hurricane Rain Jacket is made from 100% waterproof fabric with elasticated cuffs.

Rev’it Cyclone 2 H2O Waterproof Jacket / £49.49

This high visibility fluorescent motorcycle jacket has your safety in mind while protecting you from the elements.

The Trackday Option

Alpinestars Racing Rain Jacket / £94.99 from SportsBikeShop

Alpinestars is a world-leading manufacturer of professional racing products and truly delivers in design aspects of their products. This waterproof top is used by many MotoGP riders, including the likes of Marc Marquez. Easy to put on and with a precise fit so they won’t flap around, whether you’re racing or trackdaying, you’ll look (almost) as fast as Marquez himself.

They also do a pair of matching bottoms – good for UK endurance racing or anyone doing a trackday at Spa!

Waterproofs FAQs

Are leather motorcycle jackets waterproof? No, but they can be rain repellant. Most leather jackets will keep a light shower out but if you’re in the rain for any longer than 10 minutes, the rain will saturate the leather and soak in. Once wet, a leather jacket takes ages to dry.

You can buy products like Nikwax Fabric & Leather waterproofing which will hugely improve the waterproofing of your kit, from leathers to textile jackets or gloves but if you are caught out in a downpour and want to stay dry, you’ll need a waterproof top to keep the rain from soaking in.

The Best Waterproof Motorcycle Jackets

Welcome to the Best Waterproof Motorcycle Jackets Guide. Here you’ll find a selection of the best jackets on the market today with a buyer’s guide explaining what to look out and how to choose the right jacket for your needs.

The Best Waterproof Motorcycle Jackets

Waterproof Motorcycle Jackets

This article focuses on waterproof motorcycle jackets specifically aimed at touring and adventure bike riders. There are waterproof jackets out there for commuters and sportsbike riders too, but they don’t need to be as versatile or adaptable because the riding conditions and uses aren’t as varied. So that means these jackets will be heavier duty but also come with adaptability, be breathable and include ventilation.

But not all waterproof jackets are made equal. There are varying factors to consider, such as the type of waterproofing used, whether it has a removable or laminated liner, the technology used and how well you need it to perform. We could say get the Rukka Nivala and that’ll keep you bone dry in serious downpours, but it’ll be wildly unsuitable for someone who is then planning on wearing it in summer.

Read on for our guide to choosing the right jacket for your needs before moving onto the 10 best jackets on the market today.

How to choose a waterproof motorcycle jacket

As with any item of motorcycle clothing, suitability is very important. It’s no use buying the most expensive and adventure-focused waterproof jacket if you only ride a sportsbike during summer.

Only you know how you plan to use the jacket, so only you can decide which jacket would be best. If you plan on using the jacket all year round, or in different climates, you’ll need something that has the ability to keep you comfortable in the different temperatures you’re riding through.

There are some basic garment considerations to take in first. Pay special attention to areas where it’s easier for water to get in. Cuffs, collars, zips and pockets are all potential weak spots where water can creep in. Look out for waterproof pockets, storm cuffs and zips that will help keep the water out.

Jacket cuffs also want to be large, preferably with a zip opening so you can easily get the sleeve over your glove and tighten it up for a secure fit. It’s infuriating having a cold weather or waterproof jacket with a tight sleeve as you won’t be bothered to force the sleeve over a large glove and then your arm and gloves will get soaked.

The technology used and the way your jacket is waterproofed (type of liner used) is perhaps the most important aspect when looking for a waterproof motorcycle jacket. So we’ve given them their own sections below.

The waterproof membrane of your jacket can be installed in one of two ways. It can be bonded and laminated to your jacket. This means it can’t be removed and is a part of your gear. Or, it can be installed using loops and buttons as a removable layer so you can take the waterproof liner out.

Removable layer

Having a removable liner means these jackets can be used in a variety of conditions and climates. If rain is unlikely and the temperature is high, the waterproof layer can be removed to keep the rider cool.

The downside to a waterproof layer is that the outer jacket will eventually soak up rainwater and become heavy and sodden. You’ll be left with a very wet and heavy jacket that will eventually cause wind chill and the entire jacket will need drying before your next ride. However, it does take some time for this to happen so you do have a good few hours of rain riding time.

As the laminated jackets have the waterproof membrane fixed into the material of the jacket, it stops the water from entering your jacket and will last longer and keep you drier in serious rain. The downside to this type of jacket is that they’re more expensive and run hotter. You don’t have the versatility you do with a removable liner. However, if the bulk of your riding is in cold or wet conditions, then this may be for you.

Choosing the right one for you

Picking the right type of liner is a huge factor when choosing a waterproof motorcycle jacket and completely depends on the type of riding you’ll be doing. Laminated are more expensive, thicker, heavier, warmer but not as versatile. Go for one if you’re riding is predominately rain based or if it has a large number of vents. Removable liners are better suited for travellers or those who ride more in the summer but need the added waterproof protection.

The obvious and simple answer is that a good waterproof jacket keeps the water out and you dry. However, it runs a little deeper than that. You could wear 10 bin bags and that’d keep the rain out (probably) but you’d still be a soggy mess underneath because there’d be no breathability. So, it’s not just about waterproofing, it’s also about breathability and comfort. That means the type of waterproofing is just as important.

The word ‘breathability’ is thrown around a lot when it comes to motorcycle gear – especially waterproof kit. But just how breathable a fabric is, is debatable. Breathability is affected by your gear’s armour, the garments you’re wearing underneath and the riding conditions you’re in. So, while it is an important factor, try not to put too much emphasis on it. For example, a pro laminate waterproof jacket will be hot, but the manufacturer may state that it’s very breathable. Take this with a  pinch of salt, because it will be thick and heavy and most likely unsuited to warmer conditions.

What you will want to pay attention to instead, is the ventilation. You’re guaranteed breathability with decent sized ventilations as air can flow into your suit.

The final thing to consider when looking at waterproof jackets is weight. Advances in material technology mean many modern-day motorcycle jackets can be quite lightweight, but once you start adding removable layers or waterproofing, the weight can quickly increase. If you’re spending long hours in the saddle, a heavy jacket will increase fatigue, but it will also be more durable and potentially higher quality.

It’s all a balance that only you can make dependent on your personal circumstances and needs.

There are several different technologies manufacturers utilise to make their clothing waterproof. Some manufacturers have developed their own waterproof technologies too, like Alpinestars with their Drystar material. Other manufacturers use technologies developed by other companies, such as the most famous waterproof material – Gore-Tex.

If you’ve spent any time researching waterproof riding gear, you’ll no doubt have come across the name Gore-Tex. Gore-Tex is a company that manufacture and produce waterproof materials made from Teflon. The technology prevents water (rain) from penetrating and getting in, while simultaneously also allowing water vapour (your sweat) to get out. This makes it both waterproof and breathable.

It’s been around since 1969 and has been touted by many as the pinnacle of waterproofing. Of course, Gore-Tex isn’t the be-all and end-all when it comes to waterproofing. The Alpinestars Drystar waterproof technology is also waterproof and breathable, as is Oxford’s Dry2Dry.

Motorcycle jackets with Gore-Tex liners certainly demand a higher price tag and it offers a premium touch to a product. That’s because a manufacturer can’t just chuck some Gore-Tex into their product, instead it has to be built and designed to Gore-Tex’s specifications for maximum waterproofing and then the company tests the final product as their name is on it too. But, there are other companies and waterproof technologies out there, so don’t think it has to be Gore-Tex.

Besides standard Gore-Tex, there is also Gore-Tex laminate and Gore-Tex Pro.

Gore-Tex laminate is a thin membrane of Gore-Tex material laminated between an inner and outer layer. The types of layers on either side of the laminate membrane determine the versatility of the garment. A jacket with a two-layer laminate construction will be durable and warm if it also includes a lining. Those with a three-layer construction offer low bulk and high durability. Gore-Tex Pro is designed for use in the most serious and extreme conditions, and uses a three-layer construction that includes a robust Gore Micro Grid Backer inner lining. It’s the serious waterproof option and demands a much higher price tag.

Alternatives: Waterproof Throwovers

Not everyone wants their main riding jacket to be weighed down with the latest waterproof technology and vents. If you prefer a lighter riding jacket, then a waterproof throw over jacket could be a better option.

These jackets are exactly what you’d expect. They’re simple and only have one job – keep the water out. There’s nothing fancy or complicated about them, and they’re incredibly lightweight and pack away small so they don’t take up too much room in your luggage.

Why are these a good option?

These are a great option if you’re a motorcycle traveller and ride through multiple climates and conditions as it’s unlikely you’ll want to get caught out in a hot country with a laminated jacket. Or if you hardly ever ride in the rain, then there’s no point going for a laminate or even a waterproof jacket – just get one of these.

Finally, you might just prefer your riding jacket to be lighter and simpler than the most up-to-date all-weather options. Waterproof throw overs are very simple, thin and lightweight so they can easily stowaway and fit over your main riding jacket. If you do most of your riding in dry conditions, a waterproof throw over will be a great option to carry with you just in case of any showers.

Because these jackets don’t use include any bells and whistles they’re cheap to buy too. And if you choose one of these jackets to take care of the rain, that means you can also save money on your riding jacket, since it doesn’t need to be waterproof.

Oxford Rainseal all weather over jacket

Quick info: From £24.88, lined for extra comfort

It’s certainly not the most stylish option (also available in black if you don’t fancy high-vis), but if you regularly ride in low visibility conditions you could do worse than the Oxford Rainsel jacket. This jacket features water-resistant seams and a storm flap over the front zip for extra waterproofing. There’s adjustability at the cuffs and waist to reduce buffeting at high speeds, and the inside of the jacket is fully lined to boost comfort.

Matching Oxford Rainseal trousers are available from £18.48.

The jacket is made from 100% PVC so you can be confident in its waterproofing abilities. It features reflective areas to help boost visibility. The Richa Rain Warrior jacket comes with its own mesh bag included for easy storage when the weather’s a little better.

Held Wet Tour waterproof jacket

Quick info: From £79.49, integrated hood

As waterproof throw overs go, the Held Wet Tour is pretty fancy. The jacket features storm cuffs to help keep out the rain, while the integrated hood will help keep your head dry once you’re off the bike. The jacket also features two external pockets, one internal pocket and reflective areas.

The jacket is also available in Black/Yellow from £133.69. Matching trousers in black are available from £92.70

held waterproof jacket

Oxford Rainseal all weather over suit

Quick info: From £37.95, folds into carry pack

If you’d rather keep the chances of rain getting in to a minimum, a one-piece waterproof like this Oxford Rainseal is a good choice. Because it’s one piece there are fewer gaps for the rain to exploit, so the chances of a leak are reduced and you won’t get that build up of rain water in the crotch area. The Rainseal features adjustable cuffs and ankles, an elasticated waist and half-lined upper for comfort. When not in use the garment folds away into the supplied carry pouch.

The Oxford Rainseal all weather over suit is also available in Fluorescent Yellow from £54.99.

Held Wet Tour Pants - Black

Select an option

Stock due in soon, verified customer reviews for held wet tour pants.

First time out, a small tear hole appeared around the boot area. The material is very thin and seemingly weak.
Bought these recently to go with the Held Wet Tour jacket I had already purchased. Just like the jacket - their waterproof qualities are great! Worn them on a couple of long wet rides already (British summer). Really easy to slip on, if you need to stop mid-journey, with zips running well up the legs. Comfy, roomy and lightweight. Nothing else needed really. Recommended
I've worn these in a number of downpours recently and they are perfectly waterproof. The M fits great over EU52 leathers with armour, although the waist is maybe a bit tight. Easy to get on with very long cuff zip.
I needed to buy an extra layer as my 'waterproof' jeans proved to be not quite: these were the most cost effective option. I can only rate these as good as I have not experienced a downpour since the purchase. The other 5 star reviews suggest I will not be let down. I was advised to order large, I am an M usually, and that was spot on and the fit and extra warmth were welcome during the recent icy weather. As ever the service from SBS was exemplary and I look forward to testing the trousers fully in the near future!
We purchased two pairs of these pants to replace our far more expensive Harley Davidson waterproofs, that have not lasted very long, lost their waterproof quality's quickly and we're unable to re-proof them. These pants are better constructed, with non slip seat, great fitting around the legs with no 'bell bottom ' effect for the shorter leg. 100% waterproof, yet totally breathable and dry inside when warm, no condensation inside. The matching jacket is excellent with a hood that tucks into a high collar, stopping rain getting in the front and down the back of your helmet. Again an excellent fit with no billowing of material when riding. With our old Harley jackets we had to tuck the hoods inside the jacket, and frequently they would come out and flap like crazy, until you had to stop to tuck them back in - no more! They also have heat shields on the legs, which is what we needed for forward controls. Would definitely buy these again.
I had researched biking waterproofs and Held Wet Tour came out as a good all rounder. They do the job and are breathable too although in stationary traffic they can get a little stuffy.
The was my first purchase with SBS and I was impressed. They price matched a low price for these trousers on eBay. The trousers are a good fit and I would recommend you follow the size guide on the website. They are very well made and easy to put on and take off. I got caught in a massive downpour recently and my legs we 100% dry. Unlike the cheaper bin bag type over-trouser, the reinforced seat, stops you sliding around on your saddle when its really raining hard. Its one of those facts of life, in that you get what you pay for.
It really is worth paying for quality like this. Still light enough to fold down into a pretty small package (in its own net stuff sack) yet strong enough to fell like they will last. Not tried in the wet yet but no reason to doubt their waterproofness. They are not 'sticky' on the inside (as no PVC) and should be comfortable to wear for several hours without giving you a free sauna. Very pleased. Usual first class service from SBS too.
A good functional design which fits me well over my leathers. I'm 6' 1" tall, 33" waist. They are of a robust build and I have no doubt that I'll have them for many years to come.
Bought these along with the Fluo yellow matching jacket. Wore both in gale conditions and arrived home dry and warm, when even my Gore-tex Alpinestars gloves soaked through. Construction is solid, taped seams, decent material and no issues with condensation. Considered going cheaper, but bought these and glad I did. Expensive, but very effective!
Have been tested in heavy rain and kept dry. Definitely worth paying a little more for good quality.
Not tried out in a major downpour hence 4 stars but appear to be great quality. Particularly like the extra pad on the seat. Easy to get on and off.
Quality rain pants but bottom of legs too narrow for off-road boots.

Judge Lina Hidalgo greets Biden aboard Air Force One in Houston

H ouston's two top Democrats welcomed President Joe Biden with open arms and umbrellas as Air Force One touched down at a rainy Ellington Field.

After attending three private events in Dallas, President Joe Biden landed in Houston Thursday afternoon for a fundraising event as part of his Texas tour. Before he had a chance to even get wet, the president held a brief confab with local leaders Mayor John Whitmire and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo directly inside Air Force One.

In the first documented photo of Whitmire and Hidalgo together, you can see the two ducking under umbrellas after their meet-and-greet with the president around 12 p.m. Thursday. Earlier this month, Chron reported that Whitmire and Hidalgo had not yet met despite several attempts from Hidalgo's office.

This is the second time this week that Hidalgo has met with President Biden; on Monday, the judge traveled to the White House to witness Biden sign an executive order advancing women's health research.

Hidalgo was all smiles at the reunion. In a post on X shortly after the meeting, Hidalgo posted photos of the two alongside a welcome message for the president.

"Thrilled to welcome President Biden back to Houston today with new Mayor Whitmire," Hidalgo posted on X. "Under the Biden administration, Harris County has received almost $1 billion for projects from early childhood education to public safety. Go Biden!"

The exact location of Biden's quick Houston stop has been kept under wraps, but a local pro-Palestinian group stood outside a home in River Oaks protesting Biden's visit.

Texas is a major source of campaign revenue for both Republican and Democratic candidates, raising nearly $3 million for Biden in the past calendar year. Houstonians alone contributed roughly $780,000 to the Biden bank, according to Federal Elections data. Still, Biden's Texas haul pales in comparison to the dollars raised by Donald Trump in the Lone Star State. Texas is Trump's second biggest fundraising state behind just California, supplying the former president with nearly $8 million in campaign contributions in the same period, according to the FEC data.

During his Texas tour, Biden touted his public service loan forgiveness program, his support for abortion access, and even made a jab at Senator Ted Cruz while throwing his support behind challenger Colin Allred.

"You got to elect Colin [Allred], your next senator," Biden told a crowd in Dallas, according to the White House transcript. "You got to, so Ted Cruz joins another loser, Donald Trump."

An advert by Mango has been deemed "irresponsible" by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for featuring a model who appeared to be "unhealthily thin".

The listing on the fashion retailer's app was for a short-sleeve jumper, and featured a woman wearing it with her arms by her sides.

The ASA received a complaint about the ad and contacted Mango, but said the company failed to respond.

It said it considered that the model's "upper body and hips appeared to be very narrow and there were gaps between her arms and body, accentuating her slender frame".

"Because the model appeared to be unhealthily thin, we concluded that the ad was irresponsible."

Mango has been told to remove the ad in its "current form".

The average annual council tax bill will rise by £106 this year, new figures show.

It comes as local authorities try to maximise revenue to pay for struggling frontline services.

The bill for an average Band D property will increase by 5% to £2,171, according to statistics released by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

Some financial advice firms are putting their  customers' retirements "at risk" , the City watchdog has warned.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has asked chief executives to review and improve retirement income advice services following a scathing review into the sector.

It found a number of firms were providing incorrect information to customers, and in a "small number of instances" it had resulted in customers incurring unnecessary charges.

Sarah Pritchard, the FCA's executive director of markets and international, said some organisations were "not even getting the basics right and putting their customers' futures at risk".

"We urge all firms to take on board our findings and review their own processes. Where they do not, we will act," she added.

Single parents have the lowest average income for both men and women - with mothers particularly affected, a new study suggests.

Figures from NOW: Pensions and the Pensions Policy Institute, released on National Single Parent Day, show single fathers earn 32% less than the "average" man, while mothers earn 37% less than an average woman.

When comparing a single mother to the average man, the gap is 53%. Single mums also have the lowest labour market participation of all groups, according to the research.

In the UK, women retire with an average of just £69,000 in their pension pot - two-thirds less than men - with differences in working patterns one of the drivers.

Figures show women spend a decade away from work on average while raising families or taking on other care needs, with the career gap amounting to roughly £39,000 in lost pension savings.

For some reason no-one can quite remember, when economists talk about interest rates they invariably find themselves referring to species of birds.

They call those who are broadly in favour of lower interest rates "doves". Those who are keen on higher borrowing costs are "hawks".

Analysts in the City of London draw up diagrams of the nine members of the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee, denoting how many of which bird there are at each meeting.

Those who invariably lean towards higher rates are perma-hawks or Uber-hawks and those on the other side are perma-doves; an announcement which surprises in one direction is "dovish" or "hawkish" and so on and so forth.

At the last meeting there were two hawks on the committee (Catherine Mann and Jonathan Haskel, who both voted for an increase in rates), and one dove (Swati Dhingra, who voted for a cut). Two hawks versus one dove. The rest of the committee voted to leave rates on hold and that was that.

This time around, the hawks fled the tower (if that is the appropriate terminology), with both Mann and Haskel voting not to increase rates but to leave them on hold. That leaves one dove.

In other words, in the Kremlinology of interest rates, all of a sudden an interest rate cut is looking that bit closer.

Right now, markets reckon it could come as soon as June, and some economists think there's an outside chance of it arriving in May.

It's just a question of how quickly the neutrals turn dovish. And all of this silliness about birds belies a more straightforward, less avian, story.

Inflation - the main thing the Bank is targeting - is dropping. This doesn't mean, as you'll already know, that prices themselves are falling; they remain stubbornly higher than they were a few years ago.

However, they are at least rising less quickly, and that is what the Bank cares about.

Come April, inflation could even be down to the Bank's 2% target. Other central banks around the world are also poised (the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank) to cut rates and some (the Swiss National Bank) have already done so. And like many birds, the Bank of England tends to move with the rest of the monetary flock.

All of which is to say, it might have looked as if nothing happened today. And in one sense that's true. Like a swan gliding across the water, the Bank seems on the surface to be doing very little.

But beneath the surface the legs are kicking, manoeuvring and preparing the ground for lower interest rates. And that's quite enough bird analogies for one day.

The US Justice Department has launched a lawsuit against Apple, accusing the tech giant of maintaining an illegal monopoly on smartphones.

The 88-page lawsuit alleges California-based Apple focuses on what Attorney General Merrick Garland described as "exclusionary, anticompetitive conduct that hurts both consumers and developers".

Mr Garland said Apple has limited what developers can offer iPhone users by imposing restrictions and fees, and has degraded the functionality of non-Apple apps and accessories for iPhone users.

The Bank of England is "on the way" to cutting interest rates, Andrew Bailey has said.

Speaking after today's rate decision, the Bank's governor said he was "very hopeful" and "encouraged" by good signs in the economy.

He also said the technical recession seen at the end of 2023 appears to be "subsiding".

However, he said consistent progress towards hitting the 2% inflation target needed to be seen before rates were cut.

"We do need to see further progress, but do want to give this message very strongly [that] we have had very encouraging and good news, so I think, you know, we can say - we are on the way," he said.

Responding to questions from broadcasters about whether markets were right to price in two or three rate cuts this year, Mr Bailey said it was "reasonable".

"That is not a prediction from me as to what's going to happen, either on timing or amount, but I am encouraged," he said.

The Bank of England's interest rate decision has been branded "disappointing", "out of touch" and the "coward's way out" by mortgage experts.

When the rate changes, people on tracker and standard variable rate deals usually see an immediate change in their monthly payments, while those looking to remortgage or get on the housing ladder will see deals go up or down.

Newspage, an industry news service, sent a selection of comments from mortgage experts to the Money team.

"The Bank of England seems totally out of touch with what the public are going through," Ben Perks, managing director at Orchard Financial Advisers, said.

"Today was an opportunity to take the pressure off borrowers, and it's so disappointing that they haven't had the bottle to do it and the cost of borrowing will remain at the highest level for 16 years."

Gary Bush, financial adviser at Mortgage Shop, said the decision was the "coward's way out" and called the group a "committee of ostriches".

"Sadly, like the government, the BoE couldn't care less about the people at the bottom of the food chain, it seems," he added.

Our   business presenter Ian King has been taking a look at the minutes from the Bank of England's interest rate meeting, and says it is clear members are still "very concerned" about tightness in the labour market.

"They note that wage inflation is growing more rapidly still in the UK than it is in peer economies, particularly the United States," he says.

"There are references to persistent inflationary pressures and they make it very clear that they will not be voting to lower interest rates until these pressures start to ease away."

He adds that the Bank is expecting consumption growth to return in the first half of the year, and for GDP to grow by around 0.25%.

"They have picked up on the indications that consumer spending is starting to recover... it also notes that mortgage approvals in January were at their highest level since October 2022," King says.

The Bank of England has "tightened the screws too much" and should be cutting interest rates, a respected economist has said.

After the Bank held its interest rate at a 16-year high of 5.25% - which is where it has been since August - Carsten Jung, senior economist at the Institute For Public Policy Research (IPPR), said inflation was coming down "more quickly than many predicted just a few months ago" and so were domestic price pressures.

"All this shows the Bank of England tightened the screws too much, which is squeezing much-needed future growth," he said.

"The Bank should thus cut rates more quickly than its current plans. The tightening stance by both the chancellor and the Bank of England contribute to the UK's growth falling far behind the US's fast recovery."

Away from the interest rate decision for a moment...

We have just heard from the Department for Work and Pensions after a report recommended women born in the 1950s and affected by a change to the state pension age are owed compensation.

A spokesperson has said the department will "consider" the report's findings and "respond in due course".

"The government has always been committed to supporting all pensioners in a sustainable way that gives them a dignified retirement whilst also being fair to them and taxpayers," they added.

"The state pension is the foundation of income in retirement and will remain so as we deliver a further 8.5% rise in April which will increase the state pension for 12 million pensioners by £900."

Number 10 has refused to say whether it will pay up to compensate those backed by Women Against State Pension Inequality (Waspi) who were hit when the state pension age for women was raised to 65 in 2018 to match men.

The prime minister's spokesperson would only say it would "look at" the report's findings.

Markets are still focused on June as the date for a first interest rate cut.

Nothing has changed on that front after the Bank of England's decision to hold at 5.25%, though the pound has fallen slightly, three tenths of a cent against the dollar. It still stands at $1.27, however.

The FTSE 100 is up 1.5% - though it was already up 1% before the decision.
