Vatnshellir Cave Snaefellsnes

Go on a journey to the center of earth - lava cave tour in snaefellsjokull national park.

lava cave tour snaefellsnes

Vantshellir Cave is an 8,000-year-old natural wonder, which is one of the most incredible lava caves in Iceland, if not the world. It was created by a volcanic eruption in the nearby Purkholar crater. As the surface lava from the eruption came into contact with the cooler air, it turned to rock, while the lava underneath continued to flow away, leaving a magnificent lava tube cave behind.

Join us on a tour of the Underworld, replete with stunning geology, fascinating rock formations, and colorful volcanic rock. The ideal tour for anyone who loves nature or simply wants to experience something truly unique.

Vatnshellir Cave is situated in the heart of the spectacular Snæfellsjökull National Park around a 10-minute drive from the rustic village of Hellnar. We will meet at our base near the cave, where your friendly guide will provide you with all the equipment that you need, including a helmet and headlamp  (we strongly recommend that you wear comfortable and sturdy footwear, as the volcanic rock can be quite difficult to traverse).  Then your friendly guide will give you a brief safety talk before we descend the spiral staircase into this subterranean wonderland.

The tour meanders through the path of the lava flow around 200 meters into a large cave that lies around 35 meters beneath the surface of the earth, where we will be greeted by some rainbow-colored volcanic rocks and incredible petrified lava formations. The cave is a fairly easy walk, although it will involve a degree of climbing, meaning that the people who go on it need to be in reasonable physical health.

At the bottom of the cave, the tour will pause, so everyone can turn off their lights and experience a moment of true darkness. The modern world is defined by its illuminations, so to see absolute pitch blackness is a profound and slightly unsettling experience that you are bound to remember. This will be followed by more exploration of a few secret chambers that are hidden within the cave before you head back up to the world of light after an incredible underground experience.

Our friendly and knowledgeable tour guide will tell you everything that you need to know about this magnificent natural wonder and the volcanic forces that helped to craft it. This combined with the many great myths and legends that are connected with the area makes it an informative and interesting experience that you are bound to enjoy.

Vatnshellir Lava Cave Iceland Tour on Snaefellsnes

  • DESCRIPTION

Home / Day Tours / West Iceland / Vatnshellir Lava Cave Iceland Tour on Snaefellsnes

Visit an impressive lava cave on the Snæfellsnes peninsula and go on a journey 35 meters below the surface. The lower section of the 6,000 to 8,000 year old cave was hidden from the outside world for thousands of years and can now be reached by a long and narrow staircase.

In 1864 Jule Verne wrote the classic science fiction novel about the journey to the center of the Earth that started from the Icelandic volcano Snæfellsjökull. Do not miss your chance to go on your own adventurous tour to the interior of the Earth under the glacier Snæfellsjökull! This adventurous lava cave tour takes you 35 meters underground and about 200 meters into the lava cube Vatnshellir.

During the tour, you reach two different sections of the cave by staircases. The upper section has great features and unique formations of lava statues curved on the sides of the lava tube. In the lower part of the lava cave, you will experience total quietness and even total darkness when your guide switches off the light. The total duration of the lava cave tour is approximately 1 hour and can be easily integrated into your tour around the Snæfellsnes peninsula in the west of Iceland.

This lava cave tour is operated by one of our reliable partners.

How Do Iceland’s Lava Caves Form?

Iceland is located on the mid-Atlantic Ridge, a geological hotspot. Due to its location, the country has 30 active volcanic systems that form Iceland’s lava caves. After a volcanic eruption, a river of hot lava flows on the Earth’s surface. The stream gradually cools down and the outside of the flow forms a crust. The sub-surface stream of molten lava continues to flow, leaving behind a hardened crust in the form of a tube.

Lava tubes are often multi-layered because multiple rivers of magma flow through them, depositing various minerals. This way the tunnels get reshaped. As a result, every lava tunnel in Iceland is different. The flowing lava splashes, and when it cools down and hardens, it creates stalactites of all shapes and forms.

Lava Caves in Iceland

Raufarhólshellir Lava Cave

group of people walking to Raufarholshellir lava cave

One of Iceland’s best-known and most awe-inspiring ice caves is the  Raufarholshellir lava tunnel . Located only half an hour from Reykjavik, this cave features an array of stunning colors, as moss-covered lava and rock formations fill this incredible space.

In winter it changes appearance and shape, with the arrival of icicles that conduct the light, bringing more color and wonder to this already extraordinary space.

Raufarhólshellir Lava Cave   is one of the longest lava tubes in Iceland. It spans 4,462 ft (1,360 m), with the main tunnel running for 2,953 ft (900 m). The ceiling of the tunnel reaches up to 10 m (33 ft)! The lava tube formed after the   Leitahraun Volcanic Eruption   around 5,200 years ago. However, it was only discovered by geologists in 1950. Impressive rock formations used to decorate the tunnel’s ceiling, but unregulated visits to the cave caused damage to the lava formations. The tunnel is now only available on guided tours , so join our lava tunnel tour and explore Raufarhólshellir Lava Cave with an experienced guide.

Thrihnukagigur Volcano Cave

elevator inside of Thrihnukagigur Lava Cave

Thrihnukagigur Volcano Cave  has been ranked one of the must-see places in the world by CNN Travel. The dormant volcano is accessible through its top crater. An open elevator lowers visitors 400 ft (120 m) to the bottom of the volcano’s magma chambers. The inside of the volcano is covered in enchanting green, red, and brown colors due to minerals deposited by the last eruption. Standing inside the massive  Thrihnukagigur Volcano  is a truly unique experience, so join us on a  day tour and explore the inside of the volcano !

Lofthellir Cave

woman inside of lava cave full of stalagmites

Lofthellir, near   Lake Myvatn , is a captivating lava cave and home to the largest known natural ice sculptures found in any lava tube in Iceland. This is the culmination of thousands of years of incremental influx of water into zero-degree centigrade air space. As the light captures the ice sculptures, they resemble frozen, translucent, beautiful ice stalagmites.

This lava cave was discovered in the 80s after an earthquake when part of its roof collapsed, revealing the wonderland below, first noticed by a plane pilot flying above the massive hole in the ground.

Now this magical 3,500-year-old lava cave is available to visit on a guided   day tour from Akureyri or Myvatn .

As you might imagine, a cave filled with ice sculptures can get chilly, so wear something warm!

Vatnshellir Cave

guide informs the group before lava cave tour

Vatnshellir Lava Cave  lies in the depths of  Snæfellsjökull National Park . Formed during a volcanic eruption 8000 years ago, the cave now is 114 ft (35 m) under the surface of the Earth and stretches about656 ft (200 m). Surrounded by vast lava fields, the entrance to the cave is not always noticeable, yet the cave is definitely worth a visit!

Once you reach its depths, you’ll be stunned by the cave’s raw beauty, lava formations, and many layers of hardened lava. Watch your step to protect yourself and the cave from any accidents!

Leiðarendi Cave

view from inside Leibarendi lava cave

Leidarendi Cave consists of one long tunnel cave that separates out into smaller chambers. This one is famous for its rich colours; iron deposits created its reds, then there are shades of yellow from sulphur, and dramatic shades of green from copper.

No two lava caves are the same, because each one was created in different circumstances. In this case, Leidarendi formed as the result of two separate volcanic eruptions, a thousand years apart.

The name ‘Leidarendi’ means “the end of the road”, which it was for a poor ram who was found in a dark, deep corner here.

You’ll find this ice cave just 30 minutes outside of   Reykjavik .

Viðgelmir Cave

staircase to exit of Vidgelmir lava cave

A quintessential Icelandic attraction, Viðgelmir  Cave   was forged by lava to create something unique and wonderful.

Viðgelmir Cave, was created by a massive eruption in 930 CE and spreads over a 78 sq mi (200 sq km) area, making it the largest lava tube cave in Iceland. It’s part of the Hallmundarhraun lava field in the west of Iceland. Visitors can expect to see fascinating rock formations in bright colours. These colours were created by mineral deposits brought by the flow of lava thousands of years ago.

In 1993 during archeological excavations,   Viking remains   and jewelry were found and preserved. Now the cave is only accessible through guided tours.

Today, it’s an accessible space, with two large entry points and stairwells, walkways and artificial light. Natural light breaks through from above in some points.

Iceland’s largest lava cave sits in the   Snaefellsnes Peninsula , in Borgarfjörður in West Iceland, and you can visit Viðgelmir on our   Snaefellsnes Tour .

Grjótagjá Cave

blue water in Grjotagja volcano cave

Grjotagja Cave  is one of the few caves in the country with a hot spring inside. Back in the day, the caves were feared by Icelanders and believed to be inhabited by  trolls. In reality, the caves were a hiding place for outlaws. A famous outlaw named Jón Markússon lived in Grjótagjá for a long time and would bathe in its hot spring.

In more recent times, the cave has become a popular hangout for Icelanders. After more than a dozen eruptions in the 1980s, the water in the spring became too hot to bathe and now it’s only suitable for caving. The cave was featured in an episode of  Game of Thrones .

women explore Buri Lava Cave in Iceland

Buri Cave is one of the most breath-taking lava caves in Iceland and it is located under   Leitarhraun Lava Field .

The first 131 ft (40 m) of Buri Cave were discovered in 1992. The cave was created around 5,000 years ago by a raging lava river. The river was so fierce that it burnt a 55 ft (17 m) deep vertical lava pit.

Buri cave’s chambers are decorated with various lava rock formations, stalagmites, and stalactites. During the winter, ice freezes in unique patterns and creates a stunning vista that changes every year.

Gjabakkahellir

Also known as Helguhellir or Stelpuhellir (“Girl cave”), Gjabakkahellir is over 9,000 years old. This one is unusual in that it has an easy-access entrance on both ends, so you can traverse the whole cave from entrance to exit.

Highlights of this cave include the imtimidating, ‘shark-tooth’ stalagmites that hang from its roof and its many lava formations.

While it’s a relatively easy journey through this ice cave, you will have to use your hands and feet to negotiate this uneven terrain.

This cave is located in Þingvellir National Park, so is very accessible from Reykjavik.

The Best Lava Caving Tours in Iceland

Snaefellsnes

lava cave tour snaefellsnes

Cave enthusiasts gather up and join us on this fabulous tour of one of the most interesting and oldest lava caves of Iceland. This gorgeous lava cave is all that you need to see if you are interested in finding and feasting your eyes upon some of the most beautiful underground geological formations in Iceland along with the extraordinary color portraits formed by lava which can not be found in any other lava cave, even in the land of ice and fire itself. Located in Purkhólahraun, an 8000 years old lava field on the west corner of the Snæfellsnes peninsula , Vatnshellir Lava Cave will help you mark the mandatory trip to lava done. Let us explore all the aspects of this destination that you will cover in this tour along with your tour itinerary.

About Vatnshellir Lava Cave

This beautiful lava cave or better known as lava tunnel was created about 8000 years ago when the nearby lava field of Purkhólahraun received the eruption remains from the nearby erupted volcanoes. A river of molten rocks from the eruption started to cool off from the outside and created a solid tube-like structure with the insides still hot and moving. The lava inside this tube kept flowing like usual for a while and got flushed eventually. The remainder of this exercise is what now we know as the Vatnshellir lava cave. This is the reason that this cave is also known as the Vatnshellir lava ‘tube’ instead of a cave.

The flowing lava of the tube left some remarkable souvenirs for the up and coming generations to find. The seemingly best thing about this cave is the remarkable color palate of the rocks that are found inside the cave. From the signature color of the lava, to red colors like golden, green, brown, and a mix of all these colors have a very frequent appearance in the cave. These different colors of the rocks are actually the colors of the minerals left behind by the lava. The red color scheme showcases the deposits of iron, green represents the copper deposits and the golden or yellow tones represent the clusters of Sulphur. There are several formations in the cave including stalagmites and stalactites. The cave itself is very dark so you need to travel with flashlights to keep track of the path.

The Vatnshellir Lava Cave is about 200 meters long and about 35 meters deep . The cave is also known as the Water Cave since it was used to get water for the cattle in the olden times. There are four different caves in the lava cave group – Vatnshellir, Bárðarstofa, Vættargangur, and Iður. Combined together these four caves are known as the Undirheimar or the Nether Region which is another word for “hell”, which sounds sort of legit given the existence of the cave. You would find the stairs that lead to the cave quite interesting as well.

Information on the Tour

The tour of the cave will last for 45 minutes starting from the entry point of the cave above the ground and ending when you are back up on the surface. The cave is quite easy to access but the tourists still need to be in considerably good shape to be a part of it. While there are no said health standards for traveling to the cave, one must be able to walk up 2-3 heights of stairs comfortably and should have no problem in walking on uneven terrains.

The meeting spot for the tour will be the entry spot of the cave itself. There you will find an elevator-like metal tube that leads down to the cave using a spiral staircase. You will be provided with the necessary equipment that is required to travel in the cave which includes a flashlight, torches, and helmets. Headlights are not permitted in the caves and hence flashlights are used instead.

How to prepare for the tour?

Iceland is a cold country, no surprise there but the summers can be pleasant. However, the temperature inside the cave can be quite lower than it is on the surface. Mostly the temperature is lower than the freezing point which means that you will have to wear some extra warm clothes to keep cozy in the cave. Along with that, it is recommended to wear hiking boots which are sturdy enough to walk on uneven ground. It is recommended not to wear shoes with high heels, or even flat-bottomed shoes like sneakers or flip-flops. They are not permitted on the tour so it is wise to avoid wearing them. Gloves are also recommended for the tour as they can protect you from the sharp rocks if you happen to fall or trip.

  • Djúpalónssandur

The day begins with a drive along the west to the beach in Ytri Tunga which is a well-known seal colony. The seals are friendly and curious and will climb up on the rocks near the sandy beach.

The next stop is the fishing hamlet Arnarstapi and then Hellnar where you will have time to walk along the cliffs for half an hour; the view to the sea on this hike is breathtaking. In Djúpalónssandur you will discover incredible rock formations. The beaches are covered with small black stones which are unique. You will hike to one of the most impressive formations called Lóndrangar, which are a pair of rock pinnacles made of basalt approximately 70 m high.

After enjoying the many amazing sites above ground level it is now time to journey towards the Center of the Earth! You will go caving in the Vatnshellir lave cave where you can see the tumult of the volcanic landscape up close. This cave was created by volcanic eruption 7.000 ago.

You will also stop in Saxhóll which is an old 100 m high volcanic crater. There is a good path to the top of the crater where you can enjoy one of the most spectacular view in the area. From the magical Snæfellsnesjökull glacier to the mighty Atlantic Ocean, the scenery is simply amazing.

At the end of the day, you will finish with a drive through three small fishing villages on the way to the charming village of Stykkisholmur. There you will enjoy a lovely evening and spend the night in the unique Hotel Fransiskus, a beautiful hotel located in a former monastery. The rooms are cozy and comfortable with private bathrooms.

After a refreshing rest and breakfast at the hotel, your day starts with a visit to the majestic Kirkjufell mountain, which is one of the most popular photo stops in Iceland. If you have not used your camera before on the tour then this one is a must! You will also visit the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum, where you can taste some traditional Icelandic shark with a local schnapps while viewing hundreds of fishing and boating artifacts.

Driving across the Snæfellsnes peninsuela, your next stop is at Gerðuberg, a big wall of huge Basalt columns. This is one of the marvels of nature that just makes you stop and wonder about the architectural brilliance of mother earth.

Next is the visit to the historic Borgarfjordur area where you will see the great Hraunfossar, a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 m (almost 300 ft!) across the Hallmundarhraun lava field. The waterfalls pour into the Hvítá River from ledges created by less porous rock in the lava.

Literally a stone’s throw upstream from Hraunfossar, is the waterfall Barnafoss. Its name, “the waterfall of the children,” comes from an accident which is said to have taken place here in a previous century. There was a natural stone bridge over the waterfall, and two children from a nearby farm fell to their deaths crossing the river on the bridge. Afterwards, the grief-stricken mother had the bridge destroyed.

Finally, you will make a stop at Deildartunguhver, the highest-flow hot spring in Europe. Thread the path carefully while watching and hearing the massive energy of the hot spring at work.

After your adventure exploring the Wild West of Iceland for two unforgettable days, you will make your way back to Reykjavik.

Snæfellsnes Peninsula is known for its dramatic landscapes and is sometimes referred as Iceland in a nutshell, for its variety of nature attractions. The peninsula comprises a world of diversity, volcanic craters, lava fields, black beaches, waterfalls, glacier, lush meadows, colourful mountains and friendly villages. At the end of the 90 km long peninsula is the mystical and magical Snæfellsjökull Glacier and Volcano. The Glacier sits atop of a stratovolcano that took centre stage in Jules Verne novel and movie, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, and its crater was the entrance into earth. Snæfellsnes Peninsula, is rich in culture and history with many of the Icelandic sagas taking place there. So while visiting the natural wonders of Snæfellsnes Peninsula you will be learning the history and tales of Iceland.

Tour Program

8:30 AM – REYKJAVÍK Pick up between 8:00 – 8:30 AM, at your accommodation. Wait for the Travelling Iceland vehicle.

ARNARSTAPI VILLAGE Arnarstapi is a small fishing village on the southern side of Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It is known for its sculpture of Bárðr, who was a half human and half ogre. His mother was human, but his father was half giant and half troll. Bárðr, his wife and his daughters emigrated to Iceland and came to shore in Djúpalón. Bárðr and his family lived in the area and the legend says that after losing his daughter, he gave away his land and vanished into the Snæfellsjökull ice cap. He became the “guardian spirit” of the Snæfellsnes area and was worshipped by the locals in many years to come.

HELLNAR VILLAGE Hellnar is a small and ancient fishing villages. The beach in Hellnar has amazing rock formations.

VATNSHELLIR LAVA CAVE Vatnshellir lava cave is a lava tube in an 8000-year lava field. The lava was formed in an eruption in a nearby crater Purkhólar. During the eruption the lava flowed downhill, cooling down on the surface while still running below, ultimately draining out and leaving a beautiful lava tube, which is now accessible.

DJÚPALÓNSSANDUR BLACK BEACH Djúpalónssandur black beach is a bay at the tip of Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The black small pebbles on the beach have been smoothed by the ocean waves, and amongst them are scattered rusty parts of a wreckage of a ship that stranded in the area in 1948. In the old days, fishermen used to test their strength by lifting heavy rocks, that still lie there. Heaviest is Fullsterkur (“full strength”), weighing 154 kg, next is Hálfsterkur (“half strength”) weighing 100 kg, hálfdrættingur (“weakling”) weighing 54 kg and Amlóði (“Useless”) 23 kg. They were traditionally used to qualify men for work on fishing boats, with the Hálfdrættingur being the minimum weight a man would have to lift onto a ledge at hip-height to qualify.

LÓNDRANGAR CLIFFS Lóndrangar cliffs are rock peaks that have formed by erosion of the surrounding material. Lóndrangar is volcanic plugs of basalt, at 75 and 61 meters in height.

KIRKJUFELL AND KIRKJUFELL WATERFALL Kirkjufell and Kirkjufell waterfall. Kirkjufell, located on the northern side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, is one of the most picturesque mountains in Iceland, and with the Kirkjufell waterfall in the vicinity makes a wonderful nature stop.  Kirkjufell was chosen to be one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones, featuring as the “Arrowhead Mountain”.

Caving Adventure At Vatnshellir Cave in Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Lava caving in Iceland: Vatnshellir Cave in Snæfellsnes peninsula

From exploring the South Coast’s mighty waterfalls and black sand beaches to checking out new museums like the Tales from Iceland Museum in Reykjavík, Iceland is one of my favorite travel destinations. Iceland’s natural scenery is breathtaking and there are bold new adventures to have at nearly every turn. So as I plan my third trip to Iceland and use resources like Travelade to pick new tours and activities, I’ve been feeling nostalgic. I’ve found myself reminiscing about my day trip to the Snæfellsnes peninsula in Western Iceland. Nicknamed “Iceland in Miniature” for its diverse landscape, the peninsula is only a few hours from Reykjavík. The Snæfellsnes peninsula has rolling farmlands, extensive lava fields and is home to small coastal villages and several salmon fishing rivers. Yet one of the highlights from my day trip to Snæfellsnes was the guided tour of Vatnshellir Cave.

Although my bus tour to the Snæfellsnes peninsula was jam-packed with sightseeing, exploring the Vatnshellir Cave was the most anticipated part of my trip. I have a fascination with caves (I’ve visited caves in Bermuda and Ireland ) and I love getting up close and personal with what exists underground.

Towards the end of the trip, our bus dropped us off in front of a small wooden workshed sitting in a mossy lava field at the opening of Vatnshellir Cave.

Inside Vatnshellir Cave

For more iceland adventures:.

Vatnshellir Cave is one of the most visited caves in Iceland. It’s also where the book, “Journey to the Center of the Earth” by French author Jules Vernes started.

Vatnshellir Cave or “Water Cave” is a 8,000-year-old lava tunnel under Snæfellsjökull glacier at the Snæfellsnes National Park. The lava cave was formed after a nearby volcanic eruption. As the lava flowed down the hill in a narrow lava river, it started to cool at the top forming the roof of the cave. When the eruption stopped and the tub emptied out, it left behind a hollow lava tunnel which visitors to the national park can explore with expert guides.

There are actually hundreds of lava caves scattered throughout the Snæfellsnes peninsula; Vatnshellir Cave is only one of them.

Before descending into the cave, we were introduced to our tour guide from Summit Guide Adventures, the only tour company given permission to conduct tours at Vatnshellir. We were outfitted with bright orange helmets and hands-free flashlights. After reviewing the safety procedures, we were told to close our pockets, watch our step and to not take any of the rocks with us.

Although this is a tourist destination, preservation and conservation are the biggest priorities.

We were more than welcome to take photos and videos inside the cave but I found multitasking extremely difficult.

We then walked into a small metal silo with a cone-shaped roof with the sign “Undirheimar” or “Underworld”. If you ask me, the silo looked like an incognito time machine! Down a long spiraling staircase, we followed our guide single file.

Since the cave is extremely cold (just above freezing), I recommend wearing gloves, warm layers, and sturdy shoes to feel comfortable.

lava cave tour snaefellsnes

Besides our flashlights (the only lights in the cave), the cave was pitch black. As the name of the cave suggests, Water Cave, you’ll find a lot of water dripping inside the cave.

Back in the day, farmers would come to the cave and accumulate melted snow here for their livestock. Since there aren’t any bodies of freshwater nearby, the cave served as an important source of water for the local community.

The flooring of the cave was slippery and uneven so I held onto a rope for support as I admired the lava formations. We spotted all sorts of stalagmites and stalactites and visited a pair called “The Twins”. Our guide shared more about the region’s geology and we even discovered the mythical creatures that party inside the cave.

lava cave tour snaefellsnes

The cave’s walls are purple, chocolate brown, and magenta.

There are also shiny white specs on the ceiling which are actually a rare bacteria that was first discovered in the cave. This bacteria hasn’t been found anywhere else in the world. In fact, there are actually many types of bacteria that live in the cave but they are all harmless. You won’t find other organism here – there are no plants, bats or mice.

Turn Off the Lights

lava cave tour snaefellsnes

Before bidding Vatnshellir Cave farewell, at the deepest section of the cave, our tour guide invited us to turn-off our lights and close our eyes. You can imagine the grunts and moans but honestly, this was the most memorable part of the tour because the cave has been like this, quiet and still, for over 8,000 years!

We stood there in total darkness for one minute listening to the cave.

Surprisingly, it did not feel eerie. And from time to time, I could hear the occasional drop of water but overall, the cave was still. Closing my eyes and turning off the lights is something that I would have never thought about doing in a cave but hey, this is Icelandic tradition!

Although exploring the depths of Vatnshellir with super-powered flashlights was fascinating, having the courage to turn them off made my lava cave experience in Iceland that much more special.

Tour Highlights

On this 2-day tour to West Iceland, we’ll take you first to Borgarfjordur, thought to be the location for many of the famous Icelandic Sagas. Deep in the heart of the wild landscapes here, you’ll see the most powerful hot springs in Europe, awe-inspiring waterfalls and learn about local Viking history. Then you’ll explore an astonishing lava cave system that was created over a thousand years ago, filled with stalactites, stalagmites and fascinating ice formations.

After an overnight stay in Borgarnes, you’ll then spend your second day discovering the dazzling Snaefellsnes peninsula. Snaefellsnes is also known as “Iceland in Miniature” because the highlights of the country can all be found in this one area. There are glittering glaciers, snow-covered volcanoes, black sand beaches, dramatic mountains, pretty fishing villages, cute seals, seabird colonies, and much more.

Day 1 | The Silver Circle with Lava Caving

Your 2-day West Iceland adventure will begin when we collect you from your accommodation in Reykjavik and drive you to Borgarfjordur. It’s a quick journey, as we take the coastal route past Mount Esja and a road tunnel deep under Hvalfjordur to Borgarnes, the gateway to the region. There’ll be a quick stop here for refreshments and to take in the amazing views of Hafnarfjall (Harbour mountain) and Skessuhorn mountain.

Then we leave the Ring Road behind and turn inland through fertile farmlands, crossing rapid rivers from the nearby Langjokull glacier, the second biggest in the country.

Glanni Waterfall

Your first stop will be at Bifrost – a place that you might have heard about when reading stories about Norse Mythology. Here, aside from mythical boarder between human and god´s world, you will find tiny, but charming waterfall called Glanni. Located on the Nordura River multiple tiers fall down across old lava fields called the Grabrokarhraun. In fact, you can also enjoy the view over 3 volcanic craters called Grabrok, that rise above these fields.

Deildartunguhver - the most powerful hot spring in Europe

Deildartunguhver is the next stop on our tour, the site of the most powerful hot spring in Europe, which pumps out more than 180 liters of boiling water every second. Deildartunguhver produces the hot water and heating for all the towns and villages in the surrounding area. The power of nature can truly be felt as you walk amongst clouds of steam vapor and bubbling springs on boardwalks, or you can see these from a viewing platform instead.

Reykholt Historic Site

The last stop on the first day of the tour is Reykholt, which is an historic site in Iceland’s folklore, featured in the writings of Snorri Sturluson, a famous poet and local chieftain. Snorralaug (Snorri’s Pool) is an old-time hot spring, where locals have bathed for hundreds of years. Snorralaug is now a protected archaeological treasure, and there is also a traditional timber church here to look at too.

Hraunfossar - unique Lava Waterfalls

Just a little further inland, we soon come to Hraunfossar, a magnificent stretch of waterfalls that runs for nearly a kilometer over a rugged lava field. Hraunfossar, which translates as the “Lava Waterfalls” is a wide plateau waterfall, with several viewing platforms that allow you to see the cascades from many different positions. Glacial meltwater from the nearby Langjokull glacier crashes over jagged cliffs into the fierce Hvita (White) river below. It’s an awesome sight to view countless waterfalls stretching as far as the eye can see.

There is another waterfall nearby, known as Barnafoss, or the “waterfall of the children”. Once there was a stone arch making a natural bridge over the Hvita river here. Many years ago, two children from a nearby farm were drowned when they tried to cross it. Their heartbroken mother had the bridge destroyed to save others from the same sad end.

Husafell - a woodland oasis

Set between two glaciers, Husafell is an enchanting place filled with Viking history, including traditional turf houses and sweet little elf huts to amuse the children too. This magical spot, with its thick birch tree forests and crystal-clear waterfalls, has been an inspiration for local artists and many works of art are on display here. As well as that, the “Husafell Stone” can be found here. This is a legendary “lifting stone”, once used to test the strength of the locals and still used in international competitions today.

Lava Cave Expedition at Vidgelmir

The highlight of the first day in West Iceland is a 1.5 hour expedition to the Lava Cave at Vidgelmir. Just over a thousand years ago, a volcanic eruption here in the Hallmundarhraun lava field created a hollowed-out lava tube that stretched for hundreds of yards. Over time, the roof of this tube has collapsed in several places, making it possible for visitors to climb down and explore the depths in safety on well-built walkways with permanent lighting.

The Vidgelmir Lava Cave is an incredibly colorful underworld , measuring 1585 meters long, nearly 16 meters high, and 16 meters wide . That means it’s easily the largest lava tunnel in the country. Inside, guided by local experts, you will see some incredible sights – delicate lava formations, ice crystals, stalactites and stalagmites. It is thought that early Viking settlers may have sheltered here, which makes it even more exciting to visit here.

OVERNIGHT STAY AT BORGARNES - The Capital of West Iceland

Day 2 | The Snaefellsnes Peninsula

The second day of our West Iceland adventure takes you to the Snaefellsnes peninsula, which translates as the “Snow Mountain Peninsula”. Snaefellsnes is also described as “Iceland in Miniature” because it contains all of the best aspects of Iceland in one amazing region. Snaefellsnes is packed with colossal mountains that hug the coastal roads, an enormous glacier-topped volcano, marvelous waterfalls, black sand beaches, seal and bird colonies, rapid rivers, rugged volcanic cliffs and so much more.

As soon as we leave Borgarnes and start our circuit around this 100km peninsula, the glacier-topped volcano called Snaefellsjokull comes into view. At nearly 1500m, Snaefellsjokull dominates the skyline here, capped with a glittering crown of snow and ice.

Snaefellsjokull was the inspiration for Jules Verne when he wrote “Journey to the Center of the Earth”, where the entrance to the planet’s core was thought to be located, and many people still think of Snaefellsnes as a very spiritual place.

Ytri-Tunga Seal Colony

Our first stop is at the Ytri Tunga seal colony, where you’ll get the chance to visit these cute creatures as they laze around here on summer days on a golden sand beach. We’ll show you how to find them on a stretch of coastline next to a deserted farm. The seals can often be quite playful when they’re feeding here, and it’s also unusual to find a golden sand beach in Iceland too.

Black Church - Budakirkja

The next stop on the southern side of the peninsula brings us to the beautiful 19 th -century church of Budakirkja. This black timber church is famous for being built by a determined local woman, even though the church authorities didn’t think there was much need for one here. Nowadays, it has become a very popular place for couples to get married, as it is in such a fabulous location.

Atlantic waves crash offshore at the ancient fishing hamlet of Arnastapi, which is our next stop. We’ll stay here for long enough for you to take a breathtaking stroll along the sea-cliffs to see the astonishing sea-arch of Gatklettur, the “Rock with a Hole”, which is an amazing sight. There is a tremendous combination of colors here, with black lava rocks covered with bright yellow and green mosses, all set against the background blues of the Atlantic. There’s also a tribute to Jules Verne and an enormous stone monument.

Londrangar Cliffs

Just a little further onwards, we come to the towering Londrangar Cliffs, where awesome basalt columns cling to jagged 70-meter-high pillars, providing a summer home for puffins and other seabirds while they feed and raise their chicks. Watch out for the Arctic terns, who often dive-bomb unwary visitors!

Black Beach of Djupalonssandur

Our next stop is the stunning black sand beach of Djuplalonssandur, a sweeping stretch of dramatic coastline, approached by walking through ancient lava fields. There is a lot of history here, with the four “Lifting Stones” that were used to test the strength of the local fishermen, and the remains of a shipwrecked English trawler too. You might want to test your own strength to see which of the four stones you can also lift, as they range from 23kg all the way to 150kg!

Kirkjufell Mountain & Waterfalls

Kirkjufell is said to be one of the most photographed mountains in Iceland, and it’s been featured in “Game of Thrones” as the “Arrowhead Mountain”, and seen in several Hollywood films too. Set in a sweeping fjord, this majestic mountain resembles a shark fin, although its name actually translates as the “Church Mountain”. Kirkjufell is a stunning sight at any time of the year, with its unusual shape, and standing alone from the surrounding hills. There are many great spots to take an extraordinary photo here – we’ll show you where to look!

At Nicetravel, we choose our overnight accommodations with care to make the best use of your time in Iceland, with reasonable drive times between stops.

You’ll enjoy a private room with en suite bathroom facilities and breakfast, WiFi, towels and, in most cases, a kettle for a morning brew.

Outside the capital, most Icelandic hotels are comfortable and unfussy, with friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable staff.

Enjoy the scenery while relaxing at the end of each day!

Hotel rooms are sold based on two adults sharing, so single-room occupancy is more expensive as a result.

If you are a solo traveler, we will not assign you a room with a stranger, so the single supplement fee becomes applicable.

If you are two people traveling together and staying in the same room but paying separately, the single supplement fee is not applicable.

Simply add the name of your travel companion in the “special requirements” section when completing your booking.

For couples or groups traveling together, rooms will be assigned according to the number of people who have booked together.

Depending on availability at each location, you may request twin beds if that is your preference.

Larger groups will be accommodated in combinations of triple, double and twin rooms – three people in a triple room, four people in two doubles or twin rooms, five people in one triple and one double, and so on.

If a person in your group would prefer a single room, you must select “single supplement fee” for them when booking.

Solo travelers must pay a single supplement fee in all instances.

Breakfast is included at each overnight location, featuring bread and butter, preserves, boiled eggs, cooked meats, fruits, yoghurts, tea, and coffee.

All other meals are at your own expense.

In the winter months, tours will begin and end in darkness, but rest assured, you will see all the places you want to see!

Everyone who comes to Iceland in the winter hopes to see the Northern Lights.

This mesmerizing cosmic spectacle is a bucket-list experience, with magical splashes of multi-colored lights dancing across the heavens.

But it’s important to remember that it’s a natural phenomenon, requiring certain levels of solar activity and clear, dark skies.

That means there’s no guarantee that you’ll be lucky enough to see them while you’re in Iceland.

Our selected hotels are in the remote Icelandic countryside, ideal for spotting the Aurora Borealis, with far less artificial light than in the city.

Wake-up calls can be requested if the Northern Lights are spotted later at night.

Here’s more information on seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland.

On average, we will cover 200-300 kilometers each day, with four to five hours of driving.

Iceland is a hotbed of volcanic activity formed by superheated lava and molten rock from countless eruptions over millions of years. You can explore these incredible underground spaces when our Silver Circle tours visit The Cave at Víðgelmir in West Iceland. On our Golden Circle tours , you’ll see the “OG” of geysers everywhere at the Haukadalur Geothermal area. While Geysir has fallen silent recently, nearby Strokkur erupts in steam explosions and spray every few minutes, sending superheated water flying high into the sky. Geysir means “gush” in Icelandic, and that’s where the name comes from! If you book a package with stay in Hveragerði you can also admire smaller cousin of Strokkur that erupts every 15-20 minutes.

Geothermal Areas

Discover Iceland’s active geothermal areas on our tours

Iceland’s fiery volcanic origins mean it’s a hothouse of geothermal activity with several colorful geothermal areas you can explore on our tours. The Blue Lagoon is the most famous, close to the airport, and you can visit the Haukadalur Geothermal Area on our Golden Circle tours . On our Silver Circle tours , you can see the most powerful hot spring in Europe at Deildartunguhver . And if you choose one of our Ring Road tours , you’ll see the almost alien landscapes at Hverir , where fumaroles fizz and hot pools bubble and boil! Feel the ground tremble and smell the sulfur!

Iceland is a “country in the making” formed by volcanoes and earthquakes and sculpted by gigantic glaciers.

That offers you a variety of breathtaking and unique landscapes, such as Stuðlagil and Fjaðrárgljúfur , two of the most stunning places in Iceland! At Stuðlagil, you’ll see twisting basalt columns line a gorgeous glacial river canyon, a magnificent location that has only recently been discovered. Fjaðrárgljúfur (Feather River Canyon) is a surreal sight – a marvelous sheer-walled river canyon covered in blankets of velvet-green moss. But there are more stunning canyons in Iceland, like Vatnsjfjörður, Kólugljúfur or Þingvellir just to name a few.

Our tours will take you straight to the most spectacular sights in Iceland, but there are ways of getting even closer if you want to! At the Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón), you can jump into an amphibious vehicle for an unforgettable tour around the lagoon, sailing amongst the glittering giants.

Imagine the thrill of seeing these gigantic chunks of multi-coloured ice from just a few feet away! Where else will you get a chance to cruise between towering icebergs as they sway around the spectacular lagoon? Don’t miss this magical experience! Note: Boat tours are available from May to October.

Lake Mývatn in North Iceland attracts thousands of ducks each summer, making it a bird watcher’s paradise! Look out for the Barrow’s Goldeneye, Harlequin ducks, gyrfalcons, gannets, and ptarmigans! Our Westfjords and Snæfellsnes tours also include visits to bird-filled cliffs along the route.

Visit the “original” Geyser on our Golden Circle tours

Iceland’s fierce volcanic activity fuels gushing geysers all around the country, and the most famous hot spring is Geysir , one of the highlights of our Golden Circle tours . Geysir was the first erupting hot spring discovered by Europeans, and its name is the Icelandic word for “gush”, giving its name to all hot springs worldwide. Geysir is quiet these days, but Strokkur sends hot water and vapor high into the sky every few minutes! You won’t have to wait long to see it blow sky-high. So get your camera ready – this will be one of the best photo opportunities you’ll have in Iceland!

Gullfoss Waterfall

Discover the glorious Gullfoss on our Golden Circle tours

One of the highlights of the famous Golden Circle route , Gullfoss is a thundering two-tier waterfall fueled by Langjökull , the “Long Glacier”, which you’ll see far inland if it’s a clear day. Tumbling more than thirty meters into a dramatic rock canyon, Gullfoss is one of the most thrilling waterfalls in the country, and you can see the falls from several viewing platforms. Watch out for rainbows on sunny days, and wear waterproofs – millions of gallons of water crashing over the cascade creates lots of spray!

Traditional Architecture

See the famous turf-roofed buildings!

Traditional Icelandic architecture is characterized by its simplicity, functionality, and integration with the natural environment. During our tours you will be able to see couple of its examples.

Even though it’s very close to the Arctic Circle, the 20,000 people who call Akureyri their home enjoy some of the country’s warmest and most stable weather.

As you walk the streets of Akureyri, make sure you take a look at the traffic lights. All the red lights are heart-shaped!

Sólheimajökull Glacier & Lagoon

See the slowly disappearing glacier and a glacial lake forming in front!

Sólheimajökull is a magnificent glacier located on the South Coast of Iceland. It is an outlet glacier that descends from the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Sólheimajökull is famous for its breathtaking ice formations, including deep crevasses, ice caves, and dramatic ice ridges.

The glacial environment of Sólheimajökull provides a unique opportunity to witness the effects of climate change, as the glacier has been receding in recent years. This caused new Glacial Lagoon to appear on the map of Iceland, where huge chunks of ice slowly float on its surface.

The town is surrounded by moss-covered lava fields and towering volcanic mountains. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs through this area, so there are frequent earthquakes. That means new hot springs are constantly opening up in this highly active area, even in people’s homes and gardens!

If you’re looking for a bite to eat, there’s a wide selection of bars and restaurants. Some even use geothermal power for carbon-neutral cooking! Make sure you try the tomato soup while you’re here!

If National Geographic and TripAdvisor both say Reynisfjara is one of the best beaches in the world, then you have to add it to your list of “must-see” places to visit when you’re in Iceland. With miles of jet-black volcanic sands stretching into the distance and fierce Atlantic waves pounding the shoreline, it’s one of the most dramatic coastlines you’ll ever see! Lined with beautiful basalt columns, the Reynisdrangar completes the cinematic scene, towering sea stacks looming offshore! Some say these were trolls trying to catch a ship, frozen in time when the sun rose!

Jökulsárlon Glacier Lagoon

Explore Iceland’s spectacular Glacier Lagoon on our tours

Where else can you get up close to immense icebergs in a glacial meltwater lagoon? On our South Coast Multi-Day and Ring Road tours , you can visit the astonishing Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón , where you’ll see gigantic icebergs floating serenely around a spectacular lake, which only formed about 80 years ago. As the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier retreats, giant pieces break off the edge and sail out to sea. The Glacier Lagoon is the “waiting room” on the journey! Come and see these multicolored icy marvels for yourself at this bucket-list location, and look out for seals basking on the bergs too!

Looking for unique Iceland bucket list experiences? Iceland has become a bucket-list destination for many travelers, and it’s easy to see why. With its otherworldly landscapes, vibrant culture, and geothermal wonders, it’s a place unlike anywhere else.

But with rising tourist numbers, many visitors find themselves sticking to the popular Golden Circle route. If you’re looking for a more unique and off-the-beaten-path Icelandic adventure, consider venturing west to the spectacular Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

In this guide, I will share with you the lesser-explored side of Iceland, sharing hidden gems, insider tips, and the authentic experiences you’ll find as you journey away from the crowds. We’ll base our exploration out of the charming Hotel Húsafell, a haven of sustainability nestled near the iconic Snæfellsjökull glacier.

Reykjavík - Iceland’s Cultural Gateway

Before heading into the wilds of Western Iceland, let’s start in Reykjavík, the vibrant capital city. It’s a compact city, easily explored on foot, and it’s steeped in fascinating history and culture.

  • UNESCO City of Literature: Iceland boasts a rich storytelling tradition dating back to Viking sagas, and Reykjavík was the first non-English speaking city to receive this prestigious designation.
  • Trolls and Hidden People: While exploring, you’ll quickly notice that belief in trolls and “hidden people” isn’t just for children here. It’s a deeply ingrained part of Icelandic folklore that even influences construction projects!

Sun Voyager:  This striking steel sculpture on the waterfront resembles a Viking ship and is a popular spot for photos.

Hallgrimskirkja Church:  Ascend to the tower of this iconic church for panoramic city views and a glimpse of the distant Snæfellsjökull glacier.

Leifur Eiríksson Statue:  Pay homage to the legendary Viking explorer who discovered North America centuries before Columbus.

Icelandic sheep have kept the inhabitants of this chilly island warm for centuries. Their unique wool, called Lopi, is used to create the iconic Lopapeysa sweaters.

  • The Handknitting Association of Iceland:  Visit one of their Reykjavik shops to purchase authentic, handmade sweaters directly from the knitters themselves. You can even discover who made your sweater through its unique code! Learn more about this association on their website: Handknitting Association of Iceland

You can’t visit Reykjavík without trying a hotdog from Bæjarins Beztu. This tiny stand has been a beloved institution since 1937, serving up hotdogs made with a unique blend of lamb, pork, and beef.

Order yours “with everything” to get the classic Icelandic toppings. Even celebrities like Bill Clinton and Kim Kardashian have been known to stop by!

For a taste of the unexpected, delve into our under-the-radar guided activities in Reykjavik, Iceland .

Exploring West Iceland

Now, let’s leave the urban charms of Reykjavík behind and head west towards the wild beauty of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Our base for this adventure will be the environmentally conscious Hotel Húsafell.

Its prime location within the Snæfellsnes National Park makes it the perfect spot for exploration and offers a good chance of catching those elusive, Northern Lights .

  • Commitment to Sustainability: Hotel Húsafell deeply understands the delicate balance of Iceland’s ecosystem. They use renewable energy and support local conservation efforts, showing you can experience luxury and still be a responsible traveler.
  • Ideal for Aurora Borealis Viewing: The hotel’s remote location minimizes light pollution, creating ideal conditions for witnessing the dazzling Northern Lights. They even offer a free wake-up call service specifically for this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon!

Our first stop in West Iceland showcases the stunning natural beauty of the region: Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls. These are a bit different than the towering falls you’ll find on the Golden Circle.

  • Unique Cascading Waterfalls: Hraunfossar is a series of waterfalls spilling over a wide stretch of lava rock, creating an ethereal scene. Barnafoss, known as the “children’s waterfall,” has a tragic legend attached to it.
  • Bring Your Crampons: The paths here can get icy, especially in winter. Be sure to pack crampons (shoe spikes) for better grip and safety. Speaking of ice, this area’s water has a distinct blue hue thanks to “glacial”flour”-finely ground rock particles that reflect the sunlight.

For a truly unforgettable experience, venture deep into the Vidgelmir Lava Cave. This natural wonder was formed around 900 AD by an eruption from Langjökull glacier, located about 22 miles away.

  • What to Expect: Don a helmet and headlamp and descend into this subterranean world. Your guide will explain the captivating geology and point out unique formations. There’s even a section where you’ll experience what true total darkness is like!
  • Safety First: While bats are a common cave dweller in many places, don’t worry – you won’t find any in Iceland! Also, be aware that there’s only one way in and out, so if you’re prone to claustrophobia, it might be best to admire the cave’s beauty from the outside.

Discover more places to see in west Iceland in this article, best things to do in West Iceland away from the crowd.

If there’s a must-do activity in Iceland, it’s exploring a glacier – and not just any glacier. Langjökull is the second-largest glacier in Iceland, and it’s the only one with an accessible ice cave.

  • Otherworldly Experience: Picture yourself riding a massive vehicle specifically designed to conquer snowy terrain. You’ll journey up the glacier, enjoying breathtaking mountain views bathed in the soft, diffused light of an Icelandic winter.
  • Inside the Glacier: Descend into the heart of the glacier through a man-made tunnel. Marvel at the vibrant blues and learn about the science of glaciers and the effects of climate change, which are sadly very evident on Langjökull. You might even stumble upon an ethereal ice chapel!
  • A Moment for Reflection: This tour offers a unique perspective on the fragile beauty of our planet. Take the time to appreciate the raw power of nature and the need to protect these precious environments.

Iceland is famous for its geothermal activity, and the area near Hotel Húsafell is no exception. After a day of adventure, there’s nothing quite like soaking in a steaming hot spring surrounded by stunning landscapes.

  • Canyon Baths: A Hidden Gem: Hotel Húsafell offers access to an exclusive experience, the Canyon Baths. It takes a bit of a hike to reach them, but it’s worth it for the serenity and stunning mountain backdrop.
  • Intimate and Eco-Conscious: These geothermal pools are fueled by a 2.5 million-year-old volcano! The focus here is on enjoying the peacefulness of nature with minimal environmental impact.

Snorkeling at Thingvellir National Park

For a truly unforgettable experience, consider braving the chilly waters and snorkeling in Silfra at Thingvellir National Park. Yes, snorkeling in Iceland! While a popular spot on the Golden Circle, the unique experience makes it worth venturing out for.

  • UNESCO World Heritage Site: Thingvellir holds deep historical significance. It was the site of Iceland’s first parliament, Althingi, established in 930 AD, making it one of the oldest parliamentary sites in the world.
  • Where Continents Collide: The real draw of Silfra, however, lies beneath the surface. This underwater rift is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet and are slowly pulling apart.
  • Crystal Clear Glacial Water: The water in Silfra comes from the Langjökull glacier, filtered through lava rocks for decades, resulting in unparalleled visibility. You’ll feel like you’re flying as you glide through this pristine underwater world.

Discover the seven must-experience destinations in South Iceland for an in-depth guide to the region’s highlights and hidden gems.

  • Specialized Gear: Reputable tour companies will provide you with insulated wetsuits and gear for your comfort and safety. The water is cold, but your body will surprisingly adjust quickly.
  • Embrace the Challenge: If the idea of cold water makes you nervous, remember that the experience itself is far more enjoyable than the initial anticipation!
  • A Place of History and Geology: After you get out of the water, take a walk to the site of the ancient Parliament for a powerful sense of Icelandic history and the ever-changing forces shaping this extraordinary land.

Back at Hotel Húsafell, a culinary adventure awaits. Head Chef Ingolfur Piffl puts a modern twist on traditional Icelandic fare, emphasizing fresh, local ingredients and an impressive knowledge of foraging.

  • Sustainable and Seasonal: The hotel strives to minimize its carbon footprint by sourcing from Icelandic farmers and even growing their own edible flowers and mushrooms.
  • A Chef’s Passion: Chef Ingolfur’s background (he has degrees from Harvard, no less!) shines through in his creative dishes and commitment to culinary innovation rooted in Icelandic traditions.

Iceland transforms with the seasons, each offering its own distinct magic.

Summer brings the midnight sun, inviting endless exploration under the glow of nearly 24-hour daylight, while winter cloaks the land in a mystical atmosphere and offers a chance to witness the spectacular Northern Lights .

Choosing the right time for your Iceland trip is key to the ultimate experience, as it greatly affects which activities are at their best and whether you want to mingle with crowds or enjoy some solitude.

Find out more in our article “ Best Time for Iceland: Top Places by Season ,” where we’ll help you tailor your itinerary based on your dream activities, weather preferences, budget considerations, and the type of ambiance you seek.

  • Plan for the Crowds: Iceland is a popular destination, so if you want to avoid peak crowds, try visiting during the shoulder seasons (spring or fall). For up-to-date visitor data, check out the Visit Iceland website .
  • Aurora Forecasts: The Northern Lights are most visible during the winter (late August to April), but clear skies are essential. Get real-time forecasts from the Icelandic Meteorological Office or websites like Spaceweather .
  • Stay at Hotel Húsafell: If you’re looking for a base to explore West Iceland’s hidden gems, Hotel Húsafell offers luxury, sustainability, and access to unique experiences.
  • Travel with the Experts: For insider knowledge and a more personalized experience, consider a private tour company like Oak Travel , a family-owned business specializing in authentic Icelandic adventures.
  • Iceland Can Be Expensive: As an island nation, Iceland imports many goods, so prices can be higher than expected. Factor this into your budget and consider the value of the unique experiences and memories you’ll make.
  • Pack Layers: Iceland’s weather can change quickly. Be prepared for sunshine, wind, and rain – sometimes all in one day! Bring layers you can easily add or remove.
  • Don’t Forget Your Crampons: These shoe spikes are invaluable for safely navigating icy trails and are worth the small investment.

Iceland’s raw beauty and ever-changing landscapes leave a lasting impression. The resilience of Icelanders, who thrive amidst the elements, counterbalances the sometimes extreme weather.

As a visitor, do your part to protect their fragile environment by supporting sustainable tourism practices. Iceland’s dramatic landscapes, unique experiences, and warm hospitality make it a truly special destination. Venturing off the beaten path will reveal a side of Iceland that most visitors never see.

I recently had the pleasure of embarking on the 2 Day West Coast Tour of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula with Lava Caving in Vidgelmir, and it was an unforgettable experience. Our tour guide was the highlight of the trip - friendly, engaging, and extremely knowledgeable about the local history and culture. Their enthusiasm was contagious, making each site we visited more fascinating. They were also very considerate, regularly checking in with the group to plan rest stops at convenient times. The lava caving adventure in Vidgelmir was exhilarating, a unique experience that's not to be missed. As for the Snaefellsnes Peninsula itself, it was simply breathtaking. The stunning landscapes and the serene beauty of the area were beyond my expectations. This tour is a must-do for anyone wanting to explore the natural wonders of Iceland. Highly recommended for its well-planned itinerary and exceptional guide!

Caving in Iceland

Lava caving in Iceland offers a unique opportunity to explore the mysterious underground world created by volcanic activity.

These lava caves, formed by ancient lava flows, reveal the dynamic geological history of Iceland. As you step into the darkness of a lava cave, time seems to stand still. The cool, shadowy interiors are home to bizarre rock formations, stalactites, and stalagmites. You'll enter a surreal landscape that feels almost alien.

Most of these caves are accessible only through guided tours. Guides ensure visitors' safety and provide insightful information about their formation and significance. Each cave is different — some offer accessible walkways with lighting installations, while others require more adventurous scrambling over uneven terrain.

Many of the caves, such as Raufarholshellir and Leidarendi, are wonderfully spooky, with dark, echoing chambers. You'll learn about their geology as you walk through the enchanting tunnels.

Caving in Iceland is an all-year activity, though accessibility may vary with weather conditions, especially in winter. Lava caving allows you to witness Iceland's volcanic beauty from within and experience the thrill of exploring the depths of the Earth. Whether you're a seasoned caver or a curious first-timer, the lava caves of Iceland promise an unforgettable adventure.
