Last Updated on: Feb 10, 2023

About this blog: We have been exploring Darjeeling ever since we started travelling. We have also blogged about this place for long. This Darjeeling Travel Guide was written sometime back. We have now updated this Darjeeling travel guide with all the latest information and required to plan a Darjeeling trip. This guide might help you when you visit the “Queen of Hills” and make you plan a perfect Darjeeling tour.

Darjeeling, the quaint hill station located in the northern part of West Bengal is undoubtedly one of our favourite destinations of all times. To be honest, we can never get enough of Darjeeling . A land of breathtaking beauty surrounded by rolling green tea plantations along with the majestic Kanchenjunga ranges towering above the skyline has earned it the moniker of Queen of Hills .

The eternal beauty and the quaint Victorian charm of the place are enough to lure travellers and tourists alike. And the cherry on the top is the adorable Darjeeling toy train that whistles its way through the mountains. Which other hill stations have so many beauties rolled in one!

Darjeeling Mall Road - Darjeeling Travel Guide

Darjeeling Trip Plan | About Darjeeling

Darjeeling is located at an altitude of about 6710 feet and is one of the most beautiful destinations in India. The name Darjeeling came from two Tibetan words ‘ dorje ’ meaning and ‘ ling ‘ meaning land. So Darjeeling literally means ‘the land of thunderbolt’.

Previous to its acquisition by the British East India Company in 1835, Darjeeling was a part of Sikkim (Sikkim was an independent kingdom then) and also of Nepal for a brief period of time.

Agni and Amrita in Darjeeling

During February 1829, a British Officer Caption Llyod spent a few days in Darjeeling. The place was then known as the “Old Gorkha Station of Darjeeling”. The place was nothing like what it is today. It was a deserted region with dense forests and mountains. Caption Llyod realized that Darjeeling can become a great sanatorium or health resort for the British officers.

Darjeeling Travel Guide

What is the Best Time to Visit Darjeeling?

Usually, Darjeeling has two main peak seasons for tourists – March to May and October to November. This is the time when Darjeeling gets the maximum footfall of tourists. When you want to plan your Darjeeling trip, entirely depends on what you want to experience at Darjeeling. Here I would mention briefly about the seasons in Darjeeling.

March to May (Spring and Summer)

This is one of the best times to visit Darjeeling. The weather remains pleasantly cool. After all, one of the main reasons for planning a Darjeeling trip is to beat the summer heat in the plains. The sky also remains clear giving a clear view of the Kanchenjunga ranges. But this is also a peak tourist season and Darjeeling will be full of local tourists.

March and April is the spring season and also the blooming season of rhododendrons.

June to September (Monsoon)

Monsoon usually starts by mid-June and lasts until September. During the monsoon, there are chances of landslides and some of the roads might be closed due to rains. Darjeeling, however, looks immensely beautiful and romantic during the rains, though you won’t get any mountain views as the weather remains cloudy most of the time. Also, tourism is low at this time and you get to see an uncrowded and relatively serene Darjeeling.

Honestly, monsoon is one of our favourite times to visit Darjeeling . We get rooms at cheaper rates, the roads are empty and the mist and clouds that envelope the roads make Darjeeling completely mesmerizing.

Darjeeling in monsoon

October to November (Autumn)

Autumn is also a good time to visit Darjeeling. The weather remains pleasant, the nature is vibrant and the skies are clear. You would get great views of the snow-covered peaks during this time. Bur again, this is a peak season and Darjeeling will be full of tourists, both local and international.

December to February (Winter)

Winter in Darjeeling is extremely cold and the higher altitudes of experience snowfall in December. Tiger Hill, located only 11 km from Darjeeling also experiences snowfall during the winter. Darjeeling gets fewer tourists during this time. If you plan to visit Darjeeling during the winter, do carry woolens with you.

Winter is our favourite time for Darjeeling tour. We love to enjoy the winters of hill stations and Darjeeling never disappoints us in this matter. Also, Darjeeling oranges are quite famous and we get that during the wintertime.

Having said these, you cannot really predict the weather on the hills. At one time, it is sunny and bright and in the next moment, it can become cloudy and foggy.

Students at Darjeeling Mall

How to Reach Darjeeling?

The nearest airport is the Bagdogra Airport and the nearest broad gauge railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP). I have mentioned broad-gauge railways because you can reach Darjeeling from NJP by the famous toy train.

From NJP, you will get both shared jeeps as well as rented vehicles to reach Darjeeling. From Bagdogra Airport, you will get rented cabs to reach Darjeeling. Shared jeeps are also available from Siliguri Main Bus Stand towards Darjeeling. Buses are also available from Siliguri towards Darjeeling, but I would recommend you to travel by the shared sumos instead of buses.

Pro Tip: If you are coming from abroad, you will need some sort of a visa that can be applied for online, or at the embassy. For example, The India evisa for Canada citizens is available online.

Darjeeling is a small hilly town, but there are a number of places to visit in Darjeeling that can be accessed by travelling a short distance. Darjeeling town is small, but Darjeeling district spans across 3,000 sq km. While there are a number of places to visit in Darjeeling and several attractions around the town, you can also visit Kurseong and Kalimpong, two other hill stations that are also quite beautiful and charming. Here I have discussed some of the must-visit tourist attractions in Darjeeling.

1. Tiger Hill

Sunrise from Tiger Hill Darjeeling

I personally feel that a Darjeeling trip can never be completed without watching the sunrise at Tiger Hill . Located at the highest point in Darjeeling at an altitude of 2,590 m, Tiger Hill is located about 11 km from Darjeeling town. If you visit Tiger Hill in the day, it is just another viewpoint and you will hardly see any tourist there. But early in the morning, the place is full of a long queue of cars and people waiting for the sun to rise. Tiger Hill is now internationally famous for its magnificent sunrise view above the Kanchenjunga and other eastern Himalayan ranges.

There is a watchtower at Tiger Hill from where you will get a sweeping view of the mountain ranges.  It is an amazing experience to see the first rays of sun falling on the snow-clad ranges of the Kanchenjunga and Everest. The sky gradually changes colour from golden yellow to orange as the sun rises up the horizon.

The best time to get clear views of sunrise is during autumn and winter. But the weather in Darjeeling can be quite unpredictable and a sudden cloud can totally obstruct the sunrise view. Even otherwise, Tiger Hill is a great place to visit in Darjeeling to soak in the Himalayan beauty.

2. Batasia Loop and War Memorial

Gorkha War Memorial at Batasia Loop

Batasia Loop is located on the Hill Cart Road and is about 5 km from Darjeeling town and is one of the major attractions of your Darjeeling trip . The Batasia Loop is a gigantic railway loop where the Darjeeling toy train takes a 360-degree turn just after Ghum . Darjeeling Toy Train

Darjeeling Toy Train - Things to do in Darjeeling

The Toy Train ride or Darjeeling Himalayan Railways is undoubtedly one of the major attractions of Darjeeling and should be a part of your Darjeeling tour. DHR is the first mountain railway in India opened in 1881 to connect Darjeeling with the plains in Siliguri. This mountain railways is said to be one of the best examples of mountain railways and definitely an outstanding engineering feat achieved during those times. The DHR has been accorded the UNESCO World Heritage site status.

If you have the time, the best way to experience the Darjeeling Toy Train is to take a ride from NJP to Darjeeling. It is a long ride almost taking a day, but the ride will be one of life kind of experience. If you do not wish to venture in this journey, you can take a toy train ride from Darjeeling to Ghum or Kurseong.

The best way is, however, to take the Darjeeling Toy Train Joy Ride . This is a 2-hour ride starting from Darjeeling Station to Ghum and back covering a distance of 14 km. The train stops at Batasia Loop. The fare for Darjeeling Joy Ride is between Rs 1000.00 to 1600.00 per head.

Darjeeling Tea

Things to do in Darjeeling - visit a Darjeeling Tea Garden

How can I probably not talk about Darjeeling Tea while writing about Darjeeling? There is almost no doubt that Darjeeling is one of the finest producers of tea in the world. There are a number of tea gardens and estates in Darjeeling district producing some of the finest qualities of tea. A packet of Darjeeling tea is one of the prized souvenirs of India that you can take home.

The cup is actually waiting for you. Take a sip and enjoy the aroma and taste of fresh and pure Darjeeling Tea. Well, that is enough of tea advertisements! Let me now tell you where you can have tea in Darjeeling. There are several outlets, tea lounges and tea bars from where you can taste Darjeeling Tea. Personally, our favourite is the Darjeeling tea at Nathmulls on Darjeeling Mall and Glenarys on Nehru Road. We also love the tea served by the roadside vendors.

Golden Tips Tea Lounge

Some of the best places to have tea during your Darjeeling trip are

  • Nathmull’s Tea and Sunset Lounge
  • House of Tea
  • Golden Tips Tea Lounge
  • Afternoon Tea at Windermere
  • Happy Golden Cafe

You can buy your packet of tea from any of these places. But I would suggest you buy Darjeeling tea from places that would provide you with an invoice and not from any roadside stalls. Happy Valley Tea Estate is another good place to buy Darjeeling Tea.

What are the Best Places to eat in Darjeeling Trip?

Breakfast platter at Keventers

Darjeeling has a unique mixture of Bengali, Nepali and Tibetan population. This is reflected well in the food and cuisine of Darjeeling. Added to this is the English influence. So overall, food in Darjeeling is simply something that we can die for.

Delicious and crisp English breakfast is quite common in Darjeeling. Keventers and Glenarys are just the places to have a proper English breakfast. Bacon, sausages, omelettes, eggs with sunny side up, sandwiches along with fresh Darjeeling Tea – who can say no to such food? For the health-conscious, the oil can be a turn-off though.

Momo

Darjeeling is also famous for momos, thukpas and Tibetan and Nepali dishes. There are restaurants serving Indian and Continental cuisines. In short, you will not be disappointed in Darjeeling regarding food!

For detailed information, you can read our article on the best places to eat in Darjeeling .

How much does it cost to travel in Darjeeling?

Monastery near Darjeeling

Darjeeling can be quite easy on the pocket if you wish so. A typical cost of travelling in Darjeeling is given:

Sightseeing costs in Darjeeling by car are fixed. To reduce costs, you can share with other like-minded travellers. You can also walk around and explore Darjeeling on foot. We usually do that on our visits to Darjeeling. You can also hop on to the taxis that the locals use for commuting and visit from one point to the other, and then walk the remaining way.

Trekking permit at Sandakphu-Phalut will come at a fixed cost and so does guide and potter. Permit fee for Singalila National Park is only INR 100. You will get the details of the trek in our blog on Sandakphu Trek .

Shopping in Darjeeling Trip | Darjeeling Travel Guide

Habeeb Mullick and Sons at Chowrasta

Darjeeling, like most of the hill stations, is a shopper’s paradise. And one of my favourite thing to do in Darjeeling trip is window shopping! These days, you will get almost everything in Darjeeling town. However, you would probably want to buy Darjeeling Tea, antiques and jewellery, handicrafts and curio, woolen from Darjeeling.

Some of the popular handicraft items that you can buy from Darjeeling includes Tibetan masks, Thangkas, Khukris (curved Gorkha knives having decorative handles), curios and traditional jewelleries and showpieces. Stoles, woollen sweaters, jackets, caps and pashmina shawls are also widely sold.

There are many old shops and boutique shops at either side of the Nehru Road leading up to the Mall.  Nepal Curio House is one of our favourite places to hunt curio items, masks and thangkas. A Biswa Bangla outlet has also opened at Nehru Road that sells Bengal handicraft items. Another place that I would like to mention is Das Studio . You will get photography items and some old and rare photographs of Darjeeling and the mountains here. Check out the old Darjeeling postcards here.

Das Studio Darjeeling - Travel Guide

Darjeeling Mall is also dotted with a number of shops. I would like to mention about Oxford Book Stores, Habeeb Mullick & Sons (one of the best places for curios), Golden Tips and Nathmull’s at Chowrasta.

Mall Road has temporary shops with hawkers selling woollen and dress items. Bargain well when buying from these markets.

Darjeeling Toy Train Souvenir

Chowk Bazar at lower Darjeeling is a bustling market where you can get any types of household items, clothing items, bags, footwear, grocery and spices. It is infact the local market of Darjeeling town. Prices are relatively cheaper at Chowk Bazar, but I cannot guarantee the quality for items like dresses, shoes and bags.

If you want to buy authentic Tibetan handicrafts, then you should head towards the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre off the Lebong Cart Road. You will get handmade Tibetan carpets, scarves, clothes, handicrafts, thangkas and many more made by the local artisans.

Day trips from Darjeeling | Darjeeling Travel Guide

You can make day trips from Darjeeling to Mirik (known for Mirik Lake) and Kurseong. We recommend to hire a car from Chowk Bazar or Club side taxi Stand to visit these places.

You can also take a day trip to Takdah , Tinchuley and Lamahatta from Darjeeling.

Darjeeling is also the nearest town to Maneybhanjan, the base camp of Sandakphu trek.

Thank you for stopping by our blog. There are a few good hotels near the Mall area which you can consider – Seven Seas near Keventers, The Bellevue on the Mall Road, Hotel Sunflower on the Mall, Dekeling Hotel. You can also consider staying at Darjeeling Tourist Lodge. Its about 7-8 mins walk from Mall, but is quite good.

Since childhood I’ve witnessed the gradual change in climate, education, culture, society, economy, politics and religions, and recently a bit of business. And when I take the flight retrospectively in introspective mood,I feel sad to land back momentarily. But when I see the flood of tourists with a lot of excitement and sunny faces and the depiction of Darjeeling, my aesthetic sense gets rejuvenated. Salute to the blog writer for the concern shown for sanitation and request to the upcoming tourists not to litter. Welcome for further minute details.

3 days in darjeeling: nature walks & nostalgia.

Last updated on

Surrounded by rolling estates that produce some of the world’s favourite tea, Darjeeling has been the crown jewel of the Eastern Himalayas since the English built their summer homes here to wake up gazing at the dazzling Kanchenjunga massif. Though the urban sprawl has swallowed the verdant hillside and roads are inundated by a constant stream of vehicles , Darjeeling remains the top destination for Bengalis, who will, if you dare ask, wax eloquent for hours about the Queen of Hills all day. Of course, they will complain and lead you into the 60s and 70s when Darjeeling was “more charming, more serene” but it is what it is and they love her just the same, they will love her just the same. This 3 days in Darjeeling itinerary will show you the best things to do in Darjeeling.

DARJEELING, WEST BENGAL / INDIA

There’s this thing about Darjeeling. Despite its chaotic urban sprawl, its ever-congested roads and increasing pollution, and its moody and unpredictable political climate, we always come back to Darjeeling. Ask a Bengali about Darjeeling and they will reply with a sigh. The very thought of a dazzling Kanchenjunga crowning the horizon fills our hearts with longing, with nostalgia.

Clinging to the mountainside at an elevation of more than 2000 m, Darjeeling commands superior views of the Kanchenjunga range and the surrounding tea estates that produce some of the world’s most expensive teas. The social fabric is colourful; besides the Gorkhas and the native tribes like the Rajbanshis and the Lepchas, immigrants from lower Bengal and Bihar have been running successful businesses here for decades. The political history of Darjeeling is complex. It was ruled by various local clans till it became part of the Kingdom of Sikkim in 1642. In 1707, the Gorkhas took control of the region. They were defeated by the British in 1816, who handed over the hills back to the Chogyal of Sikkim who allowed the British to use the area known as Darjeeling as a sanatorium in the year 1835 for a sum of INR 3000 a year. In 1865, British forces defeated the ruler of Bhutan in the Anglo-Bhutan war and annexed Kalimpong and Dooars to form the district of Darjeeling which later was made a part of the Bengal province. Politics continue to be complex in Darjeeling with the Gorkhas demanding a separate state of Gorkhaland citing the lack of representation and opportunities available to the residents of Darjeeling. Ethnic differences with the rest of West Bengal and the lack of a shared political and historical past have further complicated the situation.

But Darjeeling continues to be a darling. Every year, thousands from the plains flock to these hills to escape the heat and humidity of Kolkata. They arrive praying for a glimpse of the Kanchenjunga and spend their days roaming the winding streets of Darjeeling, eating at Keventers and Glenary’s, and indulging in adda over cups of Darjeeling tea. Some come from Europe to walk in the past of their ancestors, to search for their gravestones and their stories, while others come to volunteer in missionary schools and orphanages. Some just come curious to see the queen of the Himalayas and enjoy the various things to do in Darjeeling. Don’t forget to have our 3 days in Darjeeling itinerary handy!

3 Days in Darjeeling Itinerary

Observatory hill, happy valley tea estate / himalayan mountaineering institute, himalayan tibet museum, tiger hill, joy ride to ghoom, monasteries, tibetan refugee self-help centre, ropeway, lloyd botanical garden, how to reach darjeeling, when to visit darjeeling, where to stay in darjeeling.

Booking your trip via the links on this page will earn us a small commission, at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support – Mohana & Aninda.

This 3 days in Darjeeling itinerary covers all the top things to do in Darjeeling. But if you want to delve into the long and complex history of this hill town and understand the many facets of its tea plantations, go on long, lingering walks in the Himalayas or immerse into the local culture, consider staying a week or longer.

Darjeeling Itinerary Day 1

AM // Of course, this Darjeeling itinerary starts with food! Start your day with Keventers’ famous pork platter and a cup of hot chocolate. Located on the lip of Nehru Road, Keventers’ beloved rooftop offers a study in contrast: the chaotic thoroughfare and smoke-belching taxis screeching uphill and the serene Kanchenjunga rising above the clouds. Hundreds of eateries might sprout in Darjeeling but Keventers’ place in the Bengali psyche will remain unchallenged!

On the way to the mall, grab some baked goodies and confectionaries from Glenary’s. Freshly baked loaves, muffins, fruit cakes, tarts, pies, pastries, and chocolates fill the shelves at 10 am every morning. And their cream rolls are to die for! We were there the week before Christmas and these beautiful fondant-covered white and red Christmas-themed cakes were up for sale.

From Glenary’s, head to the mall and take the right towards Mahakal Market, then climb up to the Mahakal Temple, a unique complex where a Hindu priest and a Buddhist monk offer prayers to Lord Shiva and Buddhist deities. Darjeeling’s oldest monastery, the Dorje-ling Monastery, was originally located here but was shifted to its current home in the Bhutia Basti following Nepalese invasions in the 1780s. The hilltop offers mesmerizing views of the Kanchenjunga and the surrounding hillside with its countless hamlets.

Climb down and keep going around the hill to the Kanchenjunga viewpoint and onwards making a circle around Observatory Hill, one of Darjeeling’s main attractions.

Where Mall Road meets NC Road, you can either choose to continue towards the mall past St. Andrews church, whose stark white spire shimmers against the dark foliage. Or, you can head towards Happy Valley Tea Estate, Darjeeling’s second oldest tea estate where you can tour a tea factory. The other option is to head towards the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and further to the Pattabong Tea Estate. On the way, stop at Hot Stimulating Café for a cup of steaming hot chai and some soul-warming wai wai noodles.

PM // For lunch, head to Kunga, one of the best restaurants in Darjeeling . Eating at Kunga is undoubtedly one of the best things to do on any Darjeeling itinerary. Much loved by visitors, Kunga offers homely Tibetan food in a simple and cosy setting. Order a steaming bowl of thukpa or thenthuk and some momos , or a bowl of phing , or a plate of pork curry with rice and a glass of ginger lemon honey tea to warm your soul.

Post lunch, head to the Himalayan Tibet Museum. Inaugurated by Guru Gurung Tulku Nima Hoiser Rinpoche in 2015, the museum houses traditional Tibetan artefacts and offers insights into the Tibetan struggle for freedom.

From the museum, head for a tea-tasting session at Nathmulls or at Golden Tips and learn to tell your first flush from your second flush, your orange pekoe from your silver tips while sipping cups of the beloved elixir.

Restaurants close early in Darjeeling; by 7 pm, the hills are asleep but if you don’t fancy an early dinner on this Darjeeling trip, there’s always Glenary’s. However, this day 2 of this 3 days in Darjeeling itinerary takes you to experience a memorable sunrise, we recommend that you go to bed early tonight. Glenary’s is one of the few places that are open later, so settle down with a hot toddy. The menu has continental, Chinese, and Indian fare. We had these superb beef cutlets, Shepherd’s pie, and roast pork. They usually have live music sessions starting at 7 pm.

TIP : For a truly offbeat Darjeeling experience, consider joining a Tibetan cooking class or spending a night stargazing with Darjeeling Walks .

Darjeeling Itinerary Day 2

AM // If you are a morning lark, wake up at 3 am for a pilgrimage to Tiger Hill. Seeing the sunrise from Tiger Hill is one of the most romantic things to do in Darjeeling! Make sure to book a taxi the day before. On the clearest of clear days, you can see Mount Everest from Tiger Hill. Watching the sunrise from here is a rite of passage for Bengalis. I was 11 or 12 years old when I stood on the hilltop, shivering as the sun rose like a great ball of fire and painted the snowy Kanchenjunga massif in shades of red and gold.

This time, we lay in bed at the Revolver and watched the skies turn rose gold and the Kanchenjunga light up from our window!

For breakfast, amble to Sonam’s Kitchen where you can recharge on homemade toasts slathered in butter and topped with caramelized bananas or on fluffy chocolate chip pancakes.

Post breakfast, join the crowds on a toy train joy ride to Ghoom via the Batasia Loop. This is indeed one of the best things to do in Darjeeling and a must-do activity on any Darjeeling itinerary. Get off the train at Ghoom and hire a taxi to visit the surrounding monasteries like Yiga Choeling Monastery, Druk Kunsang Monastery, Dali Monastery, Magdhog Monastery, Ogyan Kunsang Chokhorling Monastery, and the Japanese Peace Pagoda.

Alternatively, you can also hike to the Bhutia Busty Monastery. The monastery, originally located on Observatory Hill, was relocated to Bhutia Busty following the Nepalese raids of the 1780s. It was rebuilt following an earthquake in 1934. It houses a collection of Buddhist scripts, including the prized Book of the Dead.

PM // For lunch, grab a spot at the Shangri-La, a restored heritage building that has been turned into a hotel and a restaurant. The chicken salt and pepper that we ordered with our beer was delicious!

One of the best things to do in Darjeeling is simply walking around, leisurely. Snack on some phuchka and people watch on the mall. Marvel at the freshness of the local produce, the many greens and mushrooms crowding the greengrocers. Watch the sun set in a flurry of colours and the pristine peaks slowly disappear, the fog slowly settling in the valley and cloaking the tall pines in a ghostly haze.

Day 2 of this 3 days in Darjeeling itinerary ends with a local dinner. Head to Penang which is known for its Nepali thali. Or, to Mohan Restaurant (we haven’t tried the food here but the recommendations are good!) which is open till 10 pm and serves a thali with beef cutlet and beef curry, dried fish, gundruk , vegetables, and homemade pickles.

Darjeeling Itinerary Day 3

AM // Indulge in some poori aloo dum at Hasty Tasty for breakfast today. Then hire a taxi to the Tibetan Refugee Self-Help Centre. Founded in 1959 for Tibetan refugees, the centre provides training and employment to community members in the art of Tibetan handicrafts. You can visit the workshops– there are workshops for woodworking, knitting, weaving, tailoring, and others– and buy handcrafted goods from the retail store.

From there, head to the ropeway station at Singamari, one of Darjeeling’s popular attractions. Check, in advance, to see if the ropeway is open. A ride will take you to the Tukvar Tea Estate (this is how far the ropeway currently goes) and onwards to the Singla Tea Estate, if it is operational. The views of the tea garden are mesmerizing; rows and rows of tea plants blanket the hillside in an unbroken shade of green. From Tukvar, take the ropeway back to Singamari.

If the ropeway is not operational, spend some time at the Pandam Tea Estate, which offers stunning views of the Kanchenjunga. After all, visting a tea garden is an unmissable activity on any Darjeeling itinerary!

Also read: If you are seeking a respite from the bustle of Darjeeling, look no further than Chhota Mangwa. Haven’t heard of it? Here’s our Chhota Mangwa Travel Guide to help you get started.

PM // Back in Darjeeling, head to the no-frills Singalila where you’ll be served whatever is there on the day’s menu. Expect rice with Nepali pork curry, beef curry, or chicken curry, and a helping of dal and local greens.

After lunch, hang out at the mall and drink some chai. Or, head to the Llyod Botanical Garden, a favourite with botanists and researchers from around the world, and one of Darjeeling’s most popular attractions. Here, you can see native Himalayan orchids brought from the Singalila National Park, indigenous plants and trees, a glorious weeping willow and an ancient ginkgo tree, and forests of Cryptomeria, Bucklandia, and Alnus. The conservatory houses a collection of cacti and succulents.

There aren’t many places open for dinner, so you’ll have to revisit one of your earlier stops but if you are staying at the Revolver, order their popular Naga thali. It comes with a generous helping of rice, merse-un , steamed vegetables, pickles, and a pork preparation (they have pork with bamboo shoot, pork with axone , and pork with anishi ).

Darjeeling Quick Guide

So you really want to go to Darjeeling? Here is a quick guide to all you need to know before heading on your 3 days in Darjeeling trip.

Darjeeling is a 3-hour drive from Siliguri. You can book a cab from Bagdogra Airport, the nearest airport, or New Jalpaiguri railway station, the nearest major railhead. Shared taxis are available from Siliguri Junction.

To add something unique to your Darjeeling itinerary, consider the toy train! For a car-free slow travelling experience, book a ride on the UNESCO heritage Darjeeling Himalayan toy train. Check before you book because services are often cancelled. The ride can take up to 7 hrs but the vistas on the way, and the cute railway stations, make for a worthwhile journey.

Shared taxis are available from Gangtok, Kalimpong, Mirik, and other major hill towns in the region.

For pleasant weather, come in spring and summer which are the months of March to early May. The trees are lush and flowers, including native orchids, bloom around the hillside. Avoid the monsoon for the roads often are blocked by landslides. Besides, cloudy skies mean little to no views of the Kanchenjunga. Skies are clear in autumn and winter, from October to February, and though it can get really cold (it snows sometimes towards the fag end of winter), the clear views are worth the heavy woollens.

There are some excellent places to stay on your 3 days in Darjeeling.

The Revolver , located right behind the Union Chapel on Mahatma Gandhi Road, is our favourite place in town. The 5 rooms in the lodge are Beatle-themed and they also have a large apartment-style suite for families. Bikash and his wife who run the place are amazing folks and serve a mean Naga thali for dinner (pre-orders only). On our 3 days in Darjeeling trip, this is where we stayed.

If you are willing to splurge, the colonial-era Windamere , Elgin , Mayfair Darjeeling , and the Glenburn tea estate (outside town) are your best options.

For unparalleled views, check into The Retreat whose rooms offer dreamy views. From the terrace, where you can spend leisurely mornings sipping white tea, the Kanchenjunga can be seen in all its glory. The family-run Everest Villa and the attic rooms of the Shangri-La are much loved by travellers too.

Sounds wondefully exotic. I hope I’ll see it one day.

Very nice website!

Will definitely try to follow this plan next time i visit Darjeeling.

That looks incredible! I’m going to save this post because now I’m convinced that this would be an unforgettable travel experience!

That sounds so good. The photos are great. The food looks good.

What a fantastic itinerary! I absolutely LOVE that you mention visiting the Tibetan Refugee Center. I visited a similar place in Istanbul and it was incredibly eye-opening.

This sounds like an amazing trip! Plus your photos are absolutely gorgeous! Great post.

Oh Darj! You did justice in sharing experiences of this magical place.

I attended Goethals Memorial School in Kurseong from 1958 to 1961 and visits to Darjeeling were to die for. We often went there tor sports events at the schools of St. Joseph’s North Point, St. Pauls and Mt. Hermon.

Visits to Keventers and Glenary’s were always high on the schedule. So happy to hear they are still in existance. I always looked forward to the milkshakes at Keventers and the pasteries at Glenary’s.

I experienced my first ride on a horse at the Mall. Sadly I missed out on Tiger Hill However, the layered sights of homes and the snowy mountain ranges never failed to excite. Unless the mist rising from the valleys masked the view of the towering Kanchenjunga. This mountain range could be viewed from our school.Once again, when there was no mist.

Your story and pictures bring back memories that I had shelved in the recesses of my mind. Thanks for the memories.

Darjeeling Tour – 3D/2N

3 days / 2 nights.

This Darjeeling Tour takes you to an enchanting hill town cradled in the Himalayan foothills of India’s West Bengal, fondly retains its legacy as a summer retreat for the British Raj elite. With the grandeur of the majestic Mt. Kanchenjunga – one of the world’s highest peaks – as its eternal backdrop, it’s no wonder that Darjeeling is affectionately hailed as the ‘Queen of the Hills.’

Home to the endearing narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, fondly known as the “Toy Train,” which was masterfully constructed back in 1881, this town remains steeped in rich history. Beyond its natural allure and colonial charm, Darjeeling serves as a cultural melting pot, with vibrant communities cohabitating harmoniously. This cultural amalgamation is palpable in the town’s architecture, festivals, and notably, its cuisine. Darjeeling is globally celebrated for its unique black tea, grown on emerald plantations that stipple the rolling hills around the town. The hill town is also a paradise for shoppers. The bustling bazaars offer everything from Tibetan handicrafts and hand-woven textiles to exquisite silverware and locally made woolens.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude Mountain Sickness is an illness as an effect of high altitude resulting in a rapid change in air pressure (air gets thinner) and oxygen level (less oxygen to breathe). These are a group of symptoms that arise while walking at a high altitude (more than 2,500m above sea level) without properly acclimatizing the body. The point to be noted is that AMS can occur to anyone, even those with great physical fitness as it depends upon several factors. The most prominent factors are how much elevation you are gaining in what period of time, the place where you live, and the altitude there. Previous records of Altitude Sickness can also determine if you will get AMS.

The symptoms of acute mountain sickness generally appear within hours of moving to higher altitudes. They vary depending on the severity of your condition.

  • Shortness of Breath
  • Sleep Disturbance
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Trouble in walking

If taken care of, Altitude Sickness can be prevented. Following prevention measures for AMS-

  • Walk slowly with adequate rest.
  • Keep your body hydrated.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages and tobacco-related products.
  • Do not gain more than 500 meters.
  • Inform the guide immediately if you feel even the smallest symptoms.
  • Acclimatize well at lower altitudes
  • Sleep at a lower altitude than you have been.

Darjeeling trip itinerary for 3 nights and 4 days during winter: an unforgettable memory (chapter 1).

Darjeeling Trip Itinerary for 3 nights and 4 days during Winter: An Unforgettable Memory (Chapter 1)

Y ey! Finally, I had a vacation. Thank you, God, and my dear husband for this memorable trip.

My last vacation was in 2018 December to Shimla . After that, I had a few small trips within the city and a staycations. Also coz of lockdown, some planned trips had to be cancelled.

So I was craving for a vacation for a long time and wanted things to get better like everybody. Thankfully, our prayers got answered and we could now venture out without stressing much.

Every year-end, we plan to visit our hometown and book our tickets. This year we did the same and nothing was planned about vacation. My husband told me once we come back, we will go on a trip. But I didn’t want to wait for so long and was not sure if we can go, because you cannot predict what will happen due to these new variants.

So he surprised me and said “Let’s go to Darjeeling” and I was ecstatic as I always wanted to visit North East.  This was an impromptu plan and soon we booked tickets and a hotel. The dates included Christmas Eve which made me exhilarated.

Darjeeling- The Queen of Hills was the summer capital of British India. It is one of the popular tourist attractions in India set in the Himalayan foothills. This quaint hill station is nestled amidst breathtaking tea gardens with the backdrop of majestic Mt. Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world.

The name ‘Darjeeling’ is derived from two Tibetan words ‘Dorje’ meaning thunder and ‘ling’ meaning land. Hence, Darjeeling means ‘the land of thunderbolt’.

Located in West Bengal, this picturesque hill station is a perfect destination for hill retreats and getaways for any type of trip. An idle getaway to rejuvenate oneself and away from the mundane life.

We (My husband & I) had a Darjeeling trip in December 2021 which was my first visit and my husband’s second-time.  It is one of the best holiday destinations from Kolkata.

Here is my Darjeeling Trip Itinerary for 3 nights and 4 days:

Day 1- kolkata-njp-darjeeling(train and cab journey).

We travelled through the New Jalpaiguri Special train which runs only on Wednesday from Howrah station.  The train departs at 11:55 pm from Howrah and is supposed to reach at 10 am the next morning at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station taking approx 10 hours.

But the train was delayed by 3 hours which was frustrating as it kept halting and ran slowly. However, the tea garden views helped to cool down my vexation. Finally, we reached NJP at 1 pm.

From NJP, both shared jeeps and rented cabs are available to reach Darjeeling. You can also find share jeeps from the Siliguri Bus stand.

As soon we step down the station, a few cab drivers started offering the rides to Darjeeling. We were not much convinced and walked outside the station in hope of getting more ride offers .

We saw the tourism office and inquired them, but no cabs were available. A few cab offers came for reservations which we declined as we wanted shared jeep rides. After waiting for a while, we decided to go to Siliguri station in hope of finding many shared jeeps facility.

We went to Siliguri Main Bus stand which took almost 30 mins and found the shared sumos which again took 1 hour to fill all the passengers.

Finally, the cab ride from NJP started around 3:30 pm and we reached Sterling Resort in Ghum around 6:30 pm.

Mistake Lesson learned: Don’t be in a hurry. Wait at NJP station instead of going to Siliguri as it is a wastage of time and energy after train travel.

Cost : 250 Rs/ per person in a shared jeep from NJP to Darjeeling.

They make 4 people sit in the middle and last row of the jeep, so we purchased 3 tickets in the middle row for a better journey. It takes almost 3 hours to reach Darjeeling, so a comfortable seat is very important. Isn’t it?

If 4 people and above are travelling, then I would recommend you to hire a rented vehicle and reach Darjeeling.

darjeeling travel itinerary

Now another important thing is these shared cab drivers will leave you at your nearest point and from there you need to go to your hotel.

If you are staying in Sterling resort like us, either you make a prior deal with the cab driver or call at the resort for the pickup with additional charges. You cannot walk yourself from the Ghum point where the cab driver drops you because there is a narrow road, sloping roofs, curving stairways, and a steep uphill that takes you to the resort.

Cost from Ghum point to Sterling resort : 200 Rs charge by the cab driver, 300 Rs charge by the resort.

No taxis or accommodations are available at Ghoom, so the only option is paying the cab driver or resort.

Once we reached the resort and got refreshed, all the tiredness swept away due to the hill vibes. Later we had our dinner at Sterling’s multi-cuisine restaurant, Delicaci, and slept to wake up early to see the spectacular view of Kanchenjunga.

darjeeling tour itinerary

Day 2- Kanchenjunga viewpoint and Sight-Seeing

Sterling Darjeeling offers a spectacular view of the Kanchenjunga range. We woke up at 5 am to view the sunrise over the mountain. We went outside at 6:05 am and the golden color of the snow-clad mountain appeared at 6:23 am which was awe-inspiring.

kanchenjunga view point

Before coming to Darjeeling, I thought why so much hype for the view, but man! How wrong was I? The view is incredible and I couldn’t stop glorifying God for his creation and am thankful to give us the eyes through which we can enjoy nature’s beauty because no camera can capture its real beauty what our eyes have seen.

It was magical!

It is said that the best viewpoint of sunrise on Kanchenjunga is from Tiger hills, but the view from Sterling also is wonderful. Also, until the sunshine, we could sit in the lobby and protect ourselves from the cold air.

Suggestion: If you are staying at Sterling and don’t want to go to Tiger hills to see the view and wish to see from the resort, then you can save time and sleep by checking the sunrise time online before you sleep that night and accordingly can plan to wake up.

After the illumination view of the mountain, we went back to our room, got refreshed, and had our breakfast.

We had booked a cab online from darjeelingtaxi.com for the sightseeing and according to the places we selected to visit, the price was charged. I would not recommend them to anyone due to a bad experience.

If you are staying near Mall road, then you can get a reserved car at Club stand or Chowk bazaar.

Places I visited in Darjeeling:

  • Old Ghoom Monastery
  • Batasia Loop and War Memorial
  • Darjeeling Ropeway
  • Happy Valley Tea Estate
  • Japanese temple and Peace Pagoda

Cost: 2200 Rs

Mistake Lesson learned: Don’t be prejudiced. We didn’t bother to ask Sterling staff for the sight-seeing tour cost as we thought it must be high. But later we came to know that the charges were the same or even less than the online tour packages.

Day 3- Chowrasta Mall/ Christmas market

This day we shifted to a new hotel in Mall road and dedicated a full day at Chowrasta Mall and enjoyed it to the fullest.

I will write about it in detail why we shifted to a new hotel when I post about Hotel reviews and the experience at the Christmas market in my next post- Places to visit in Darjeeling (stay tuned)

Chowrasta Mall road

Day 4- Back to Kolkata

The share cab is available at Mall road, Club stand. So before departing, we decided to have our breakfast at Keventer’s or Glenary’s, but there was a long queue and it was not open for the breakfast. Also, other shops were not open. Hence we picked puffs from Glenary’s bakery shop and ate.

Usually, the breakfast in Darjeeling, be it in your hotel or outside starts after 8:30 am.

Bagdogra airport

Later we got the shared cab and aforementioned purchased three seats in the middle row. We boarded our flight from Bagdogra airport to Kolkata.

Cost: We had enquired a day before, they said it will cost 250 Rs, but when we arrived they increased the price to 400 Rs blaming fewer vehicles and peak season.

Darjeeling trip has etched the memories for a lifetime. Although it was a peak season and few things we were not able to do, also the charges were comparatively high. Still, it was one of the best vacations.

This was my Darjeeling trip Itinerary for 3 nights and 4 days during Winter (Chapter 1). I have many things to share like:

  • Places to see in Darjeeling trip/ Places I visited
  • Darjeeling Hotel Reviews- My experience
  • Darjeeling trip: Shopping and Food in Darjeeling
  • Darjeeling trip by Train and Flight: Experience

Darjeeling 3 Nights 4 Days – The All-Inclusive Darjeeling Itinerary

If you are looking for a nice vacation to travel within India and you can never go wrong with Darjeeling. It is the most serene and scenic spot to visit for any person with a willingness to travel to these scenic locations. Okay now, how about visiting Darjeeling for 3 Nights 4 Days?

Darjeeling

Darjeeling Charm

The Charm of Darjeeling is that it can be visited all year round and still be enjoyed. Darjeeling is very suitable for a quick weekend getaway and hence can be visited for a weekend and quickly cover all aspects of the city. The Darjeeling 3 Nights 4 Days itinerary that you will find below have a majority of these attractions including the majestic Tiger Hill , Batasia Loop and more.

Day-wise Itinerary

  • Day 1- Arrival in Darjeeling and starting off by exploring tea plantations and Darjeeling Peace Pagoda

Day 2- Visit The Batasia Loop, Tiger Hills, and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute

Day 3- darjeeling ropeway and shopping.

  • Day 4 – Day trip to Mirik followed by departure

Day 1- Arrival into Darjeeling and explore the tea plantations and the Darjeeling Peace Pagoda

You can reach Darjeeling by Train or Flight and is easily accessible. Once you reach, you will have an amazing ride from the pickup place to your hotel among the nature of Darjeeling and its calm winds. Post checking into your room and having a full breakfast, you are ready to explore the majestic city. Start off your journey by going around the city and exploring the plantations and unique architecture of the buildings. You can go to some of the tea plantations and experience the aroma of real tea. This being done, you can have lunch and continue. There are so many tea plantations that are spread across the land of Darjeeling with the backdrop of Mount Kanchenjunga. After touring the tea fields, you can get authentic Darjeeling tea and continue onwards.

The post afternoon session of Day 1 will next take you to the  Darjeeling Peace Pagoda . This is a Japanese Pagoda built in the period of 1972 and unveiled to the public in 1992. This is famously known as the peace pagoda as it was constructed to provide unity to people of all cultures and creed. Once you have gone through the entire Pagoda and explored its beauty, you can now return back to your hotel for dinner and rest in for the night.

Darjeeling Mountain

The second day of your adventure starts off on a train. The  Batasia Loop  in Darjeeling is the next stop on your itinerary and a must-visit. This train ride from the foothills to the top of the mountain gives you unique views of the scenery and plantations. This train ride is not so long and can be completed in a short duration. There are various stops during this trip and photographic nature elements.

Next, onwards to the famous Tiger Hill. The awe-inspiring Tiger Hill is a very frequently visited place in Darjeeling for its amazing views and breezy winds. You can alternatively plan this as your 1st place of Day 2 since a lot of people visit this hill to catch a glimpse of the sunrise as early as 5 AM in the morning. But if you are not a morning person and want to wake up late, that is still okay and you can visit this hill at any time to explore its beauty.

Once you have had a hearty local lunch from Darjeeling’s many eateries, next on the list is the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. The history of this Institute was established in the year 1954 and is full of facts about a lot of mountaineering tidbits and trivia. Himalayan Mountaineering Institute also trains a lot of people in the craft of mountaineering and inspires mountain climbing to be a useful trait to have. So now that you have finished exploring the mountaineering institute and gained a lot of knowledge on a lot of new things, its time to put food in for dinner on the way back to the hotel and tuck in for the night.

Darjeeling War Memorial

Welcome to your Day 3 in Darjeeling. This will be your once in a lifetime experience where you will ride on the Darjeeling Ropeway. This cable car ride is thrilling and exhilarating to go on and you can get a panoramic view of the beautiful city. It consists of 16 cars that ply between the north and south of the city. Point to note here is that the Ropeway is closed on the 19th of every month for maintenance. The total duration of the ride is somewhere between 45 minutes to an hour. Starting off early in the morning will give you the best experience to go and visit this place. Once this is done, you can have your lunch and go shopping in the markets there.

Also, they consist of a lot of items such as handmade hats, clothes, jute and fibre items, all of which you can purchase as a souvenir to bring back home.

Day 4- Day Trip to Mirik followed by departure

Take a car and make a day trip to Mirik , which is a small hill town situated 49 km from Darjeeling city. It takes about 2 and a half hours to reach Mirik from Darjeeling by Car. Once you reach there, enjoy the lake, do boating and some local sightseeing before returning to Darjeeling. On the way, you should visit Jorpokhri (another nice place with a lovely view and a water body). Once this is done, head back to your hotel with a bucket full of memories and take your flight or train back home.

Our itinerary will include the Dow Hill Eco Park & Deer Park, Kurseong View Point, Hunaman Tok, and Margret Deck where we can sip a cup of freshly brewed Darjeeling Tea.

You will be escorted to a 3/4 star Hotel in Darjeeling upon your arrival. In the evening, enjoyed strolling around Chowrasta and enjoying the misty weather in the Queen of The Hills lighted up with joy.

Day 2: Darjeeling Mix-Points Sightseen

For your second day of the tour, you will start early and head to Tiger Hill Sunrise Point , we highly recommend you to reach there at 4:30am if you want the best spot to experience sunrise and avoid traffic, after visiting Tiger Hill, you will be visiting Ghum Monastery and stop for breakfast at Batsia Loop where our partner Misty Mountains will serve you a hearty breakfast admist the lap of the hills, enjoy the ethinic taste of the tea prepared at Darjeeling.

Having visited Batsia War Memorial, which is indeed a very significant place, you will be heading to the deepest point of Darjeeling Rock Garden, which is actually a very nice place to visit with charming seating arrangements and flowers blooming throughout the park.

There is also a gorgeous sight on the way to Darjeeling Rock Garden, where one has to traverse rocky hills, greenery, and sharp hairpin turns, before getting to the spectacular Rock Garden, which lies between the clouds with the soothing sounds of Chunnu Summer-fall.

The famous Darjeeling Ropeway will be your next stoppage after leaving Rock Garden. Riding from its summit, passing so high above tea plantations, is a thrilling experience.

Note: It is important to note that the entrance to Ropeway is very steep, so people who find difficulty in walking uphill should inform pre hand.

Our next stop will be the Lebong Tea View where you can sip a cup of pure Darjeeling Tea and enjoy freshly steaming momos after your cable car ride.

Day 3: Offbeat drive to Lamahatta Eco Park & Lovers Point (Tadakh & Tinchuley).

In the early morning of the third day, we will take you to Tadakh , which would take about an hour and 20 minutes to arrive at.

The village has an altitude of over 4000 feet, and is located in Darjeeling. Rungli Rungliot tea gardens with a picturesque view and the Orchid Center of the valley make up two of the major attractions of this small hamlet.

"Lover's meet View Point" is another point that we will cover on the same day.

It's no secret that the most beautiful places appear at the most surprising times, and this view point is one such example. The place itself justifies its name as the lover's meet view point since it permits you to be a little happier.

The mood is also brightens up a little more because of the romantic atmosphere there and if you are with your loved one and might end up writing a few romantic lines , such is the effect of the place.

The aerial view of the meeting point of the Teesta and Rangit river gives a surreal experience and demands attention.

After visiting Lamahatta Eco Park , your sightseeing for the day will come to an end. Nothing artificial is present here, and at the summit you can find a beautiful pond hidden in a lovely forest of pine trees. You can have a short hike uphill to reach a destination covered in mountains of pine trees and rock stairs for a complete natural experience.

Day 4: Drop-off to Siliguri Via Mirik.

With all the memories we made the past two days, its time to say goodbye to The Queen of the Hills. After our breakfast we will depart for Lepchajagat, a beautiful hamlet covered in pine trees throughout, when traveling this route, the journey will seem even more beautiful than the destination.

A small stop will be made at the Simana-Nepal Indo Border, which is a small lookout point that provides a beautiful view of the hills which are a part of Nepal, after which we will directly proceed to Mirik, where you can spend some time boating, horseback riding, or walking on the lakeshore.

In a few hours, we'll move on to our final destination and board our train/flight on time. As a final stoppage, we will make a short stop near Tingling View Point, which would be a fitting end to our beautiful Darjeeling Trips with Darjeeling Trips.

About Darjeeling

Darjeeling, nestled among rolling mountains, is a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The mighty Kanjenjunga adds beauty to the Queen of hills. The rare beauty can be seen almost from all the tourist spots. It stands invincible as the first ray of light comes in contact with the flawless white. By evening the starry sky takes the place of the exquisite morning.

Kanchenjunga is quite far from Darjeeling, but since it is very vast, it looks near. For a person traveling to Darjeeling, the one sight they would never want to miss is the magnificent play of colors. With the sunrise, the peaks of Kanchenjunga and the Himalayan region change from red to pink and then from yellow to white.

Imagine being in a place with beautiful landscapes, sharing a few moments in the lap of nature. A peaceful environment being the need of the hour would make your trip even more pleasant. No wonder this beautiful place is known as the "Queen of Hills."

As if Prime members weren't already feeling lucky with the announcement of Amazon's Big Spring Sale , they should feel especially lucky this weekend because the retailer is a goldmine for shoppers looking to score major savings on travel essentials. In fact, Amazon is bursting with next-level member-only discounts and deals on everything from comfortable travel outfits and top-rated luggage to even $400 off an inflatable paddleboard in honor of St. Patrick's Day.

Really, these deals are finding-a-four-leaf-clover-level good, with markdowns as high as 72 percent off right now. And because I’m your resident shopping expert (and good luck charm), I’ve gone ahead and curated a list of the 50 best deals worth shopping this holiday weekend. Keep in mind, these deals are reserved for Amazon Prime members, but if you’re not already one, you’re still in luck because you can start a 30-day free trial to access these member-only deals today.

Best Overall Deals for Prime Members

  • Roc Inflatable Stand Up Paddleboard , $200 (originally $600)
  • Samsonite Omni Hardside Expandable 20-Inch Carry-On , $122 (originally $160)
  • Ucomx Nano 3-in-1 Portable Charging Station , $29 (originally $50)
  • Veken Packing Cube Set , $14 with on-site coupon (originally $30)
  • Lviefent Women's Lightweight Track Jacket , $20 (originally $50)

Roc Inflatable Stand Up Paddleboard

The weather is warming up, which means that the return of water sport season is soon underway. So naturally, out of all of the deals this weekend, I’m personally the most excited about this paddleboard that’s sporting nearly 9,000 five-star ratings and a jaw-dropping $400 discount. Shoppers also say that it's “ so easy to use and incredibly easy to carry ,” and it's “perfect for every level,” whether it's your first time out on the water or you’re a seasoned expert.

Samsonite Omni Hardside Expandable 20-Inch Carry-on Suitcase

Our diligent team of testers at Travel + Leisure dubbed this Samsonite carry-on as the best lightweight bag from the brand, writing that “weighing a little over 6 pounds, this 20-inch suitcase is made out of a micro-diamond polycarbonate material that proved to be very durable during testing despite the lightweight feel of the carry-on.” In fact, even after hitting the exterior with a bat, T+L testers reported that there were no scuffs or scratches at all. Give your luggage game a refresh for just $122 ahead of your next trip.

Ucomx Nano 3-in-1 Portable Charging Station

Despite how important it is to keep your devices charged during a travel day, keeping track of all of the cords that your various devices need can be a nightmare. That’s why I’m upgrading my charger stash to this three-in-one portable charging station (that’s on mega sale for $29 this weekend) so I can keep my phone, smartwatch, and headphones batteries full without imposing too much on my precious carry-on space.

Veken Packing Cube Set

As far as travel hacks go, few accessories are as helpful and important to streamline your packing as a set of packing cubes. They not only maximize your luggage space by compressing your belongings, but they are also excellent for keeping your belongings organized. Even more exciting, this set of eight also happens to be on sale for $14 just for Prime Members today.

Lviefent Women's Lightweight Track Jacket

With its lightweight elastic material and durable build, this best-selling jacket is exactly what I need to complete my transitional wardrobe. Between hiking, long travel days, and everyday errands, it’s the ideal, flattering layer that I'll be thankful to have in my closet. Oh, and as a special treat for Prime members, it’s also $30 off this weekend.

If you’ve been waiting for an opportunity to upgrade your luggage, consider this your lucky day because Amazon has discounted some of the best-selling travel bags for Prime members this weekend. If you’re about to embark on an international trip and need a durable checked bag, I recommend shopping the SwissGear Softside Expandable Checked Medium Suitcase while it's $35 off. Or if you’re preparing for festival season, you can’t go wrong with the Bagail Clear Crossbody Tote that’s on sale for $10.

  • Daitet RFID-Blocking Belt Bag , $10 (originally $20)
  • Rockland Vara Softside 4-Piece Luggage Set , $78 (originally $264)
  • Etronik Weekender Bag , $29 (originally $50)

  • Bagail Clear Crossbody Tote , $10 (originally $12)
  • SwissGear Softside Expandable Checked Medium Suitcase , $95 (originally $130)

To really get the most out of these holiday weekend discounts, you have to check out the massive member-only savings Amazon has on travel accessories. Including airplane must-haves that’ll make your next flight a breeze, the top deals are happening on game-changing gadgets like the Basic Concepts Airplane Footrest Set , which is on set for $25, as well as personal security gadgets like the Acemining Portable Door Lock Set that’s easy to set up and on sale for a mere $15.

The retailer has slashed prices on everything that you'll need to make the perfect campsite, including the on-sale Coleman Darkroom Sundome 4-Person Camping Tent for $109 and a genius two-in-one lantern and portable charger that’s just $36. A woman inspects inventory in a display unit in a furniture store.

A local’s travel guide to Washington DC: what to eat, see and do in three days

Top sights in Washington include Capitol Hill Books, the Black Cat music venue and a top-rated Filipino restaurant

P eople love to be rude about Washington DC because it’s full of so many politicians, feds, and consultants who wear fleece vests and don’t take off their work lanyards when they leave the office. I get it. I myself had mixed feelings about my home town when I was growing up there. It didn’t seem as exciting as New York, or as glitzy as Los Angeles. But after a decade away, I came back, because time is circular, and also it turns out DC rocks and I love it! It has great restaurants, resplendent parks and free museums. Sometimes when I’m sad I’ll put on red lipstick and go wander around the National Gallery of Art for an afternoon, staring at gorgeous paintings and sulking in a way that I hope looks beautiful and intriguing to strangers. This city can be short on glamour, so sometimes you have to generate it yourself.

If you’re not feeling sad and dramatic, though, here are some other things we can do together.

Day 1: Rothko and rock’n‘roll

Let’s start at lunch. My parents started going to Zorba’s Cafe , a Greek restaurant off Dupont Circle, before I was born. My family comes so often that my mom and I once said that in the event of an apocalyptic global communications meltdown in which we couldn’t get in touch with each other, we’d meet at Zorba’s. That’s our idea, and you can’t copy it! Anyway, until then, just enjoy the food. It’s amazing. I like to get the dolmathakia, baba-ganouz, and the souvlaki plate with chicken.

When you’ve finished your meal, you can wander around the corner to the Phillips Collection , a private museum with an extensive collection of impressionist work. The Rothko room is my favorite. One time I went to see an exhibit at the Phillips and Nancy Pelosi stood next to me looking at the same painting.

A woman takes an escalator up underneath a grid-patterned ceiling.

I don’t generally enjoy shopping. It reminds me of going to the mall as a tween and fighting with my mom because she wouldn’t buy me a tank top that said “Spank Me” or whatever. But I could spend hours inspecting every inch of GoodWood and Delorean 88 Vintage . The U Street vintage furniture and clothing stores are a 20-minute walk or five-minute drive from the Phillips. They both represent aspirational versions of myself: at GoodWood, I am a sophisticated, cerebral aesthete who can instantly tell teak wood from walnut. At Delorean 88, I am someone with interesting opinions on music and who knows how to style an oversized T-shirt. I love taking friends to these places and seeing what they gravitate to.

On to dinner. DC has some incredible Ethiopian and Eritrean food, and Keren Restaurant is an Adams Morgan neighborhood staple. It’s delicious and affordable, and you rarely have to wait long to get a seat. My favorite dish, the veggie combo with injera, is only $12. It’s easily enough food for at least two full meals.

If you still have the energy, the music venue Black Cat is only a 15-minute walk from Keren. My boyfriend took me there on our first date. I can’t promise that seeing a show here will help you find love, but it won’t hurt!

Day 2: Fabergé eggs and Filipino eats

Let’s start off at Hillwood Estate , the former home of Marjorie Merriweather Post, the late businesswoman and heiress. Perhaps you’ve heard about the other home she built: Mar-a-Lago. Hillwood is just as understated as its Florida cousin. Touring the mansion feels like walking through a carnival funhouse designed by Russian tsars. Post’s third husband served as ambassador to the Soviet Union in the 1930s, and the couple became enthusiastic collectors of Russian art. The home features portraits of Catherine the Great and Tsar Nicholas II, and two Fabergé eggs. Outside the mansion, the grounds include a rose garden, a Japanese-style garden, an orchid-filled greenhouse and a pet cemetery where you can pay your respects to dogs with names like Scampi. It’s a fun place to wander around, especially when the weather’s nice.

When you’re ready for lunch, pick up a sandwich or a slice from Vace Italian Delicatessen . A six-minute drive from Hillwood, it’s a perfect Italian deli on Connecticut Avenue. You can get a slice of pizza for $2.50 or an Italian cold cut sandwich for $6.50. It also has great homemade pasta, sauces and frozen entrees. My family and I used to get bags of their mushroom agnolotti and tubs of homemade walnut sauce. It’s a rich, heavy meal that one must digest over the course of four to six days, like a boa constrictor processing an ocelot.

An overflowing deli counter with workers in food service clothes.

Next up, I recommend a stroll through beautiful Rock Creek Park. The green, tranquil escape is the perfect place to go on a long walk and talk trash with your friends. Take your time, until you are ready to do some more eating. In 2023, Tom Sietsema, the Washington Post’s food critic, named Purple Patch the restaurant of the year , and it was well deserved. The Filipino-American establishment in Mount Pleasant has a bright, cozy atmosphere. I have vivid, passionate dreams about its ube pie.

Day 3: Books and board games

To begin: a two-hour unlimited brunch at Ambar . Personally, I could happily eat nothing but Ambar’s cheese and meat pies until they run out of pies and ask me to leave. But this Balkan restaurant on Capitol Hill has other gems on the menu too, like pork sausage and ajvar, a delicious roasted pepper and eggplant spread.

Just a 10-minute walk from Ambar, Capitol Hill Books is the kind of shabby, warm, overstuffed shop that would serve as the quaint backdrop for a meet-cute in a 90s romcom. There is no more perfect place to browse after brunch and to be wooed into thinking that maybe this is the copy of Anna Karenina you’ll actually finish.

A woman among shelves laden with hundreds of books.

A 10-minute drive south of the bookstore, Diamond Teague Park is a great place to stroll along the Anacostia River, or to sit in the grass and performatively read whichever books you picked up. Ideally, you’d buy an ice-cream cone at a nearby shop and enjoy that while you sat in the sun.

After lazing around the park, wander over to the Salt Line , an oyster bar right in front of Nationals Park. For two people, the perfect order is a dozen oysters (two each of their six selections) and one lobster roll to split. And to end the night, stop by Trusty’s Full-Serve . It’s my favorite dive bar in DC, and possibly on the planet. Trusty’s is the perfect spot to have a drink and gossip and maybe order a hot dog if you’re hungry. If you’ve run out of gossip, you can play one of the board games lying around: Tetris, Battleship, a battered box of old Trivial Pursuit cards. Everyone is so nice and they always remember my order (sparkling water and lime).

Question Time

Is three days in washington dc enough, what is the most popular tourist spot in washington, dc – and is it worth it.

The National Mall. And yes. It’s beautiful, lined by wonderful free museums, and you can see the Capitol and the Washington monument from afar, which is all you need.

Is it expensive to visit Washington DC?

It doesn’t have to be. The Smithsonian museums are free, and there’s good, cheap food if you know where to look.

When is the best time to visit Washington DC?

Spring and fall because that’s when the weather is the most mild (albeit unpredictable) and when the flora puts on the best show.

What’s the weather in Washington DC?

Cold and gray in the winter, hot and humid in the summer. Spring and fall are wild cards.
