Named Business of the Year by the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce!

"Jim was our tour guide. He was funny and experienced. I'm expected the tour company should included the tipping of his excellent services because we're paying $10.00 more per person on-line compared if I purchase right at the tour location on the same day we arrived."

"Took the 2 hour tour on a Friday afternoon. Our guide/driver was very good and knowledgeable regarding the park. Was able to answer our questions and keep the presentation lively. Would certainly recommend this tour company. Ticketing was easy. Good value for the price of the tour."

"Fred was great.. very knowledgeable he had information for the entire 4hrs tour. only issue was the fog that blocked the view from Cadillac Mtn. 30 min stop at 4 locations provided time to view and even get popover at Jordan Pond."

"Great tour which I would highly recommend! Tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and it was fun to hear all the background history and stories about the park. Trip was perfectly timed and the stops were amazing."

  • See the shores of Acadia National Park
  • Pack a picnic, then sit back and relax

?

Bar Harbor, originally called Eden, has a world-renowned ambiance that blends seashore community, downeast character, rocky shores, and the famous Maine Lobster. Founded in 1796, it is the best-known town on Mount Desert Island.

Enjoy a peaceful, serene, and comfortable sail among the islands of Frenchman Bay aboard a classic schooner ship. Since the 1700s, schooners have been used for a variety of purposes because they are fast, sleek, adaptable, and considered the sturdiest ships of all time.

Frenchman Bay is named for Samuel de Champlain, the French explorer who visited the area in 1604. The bay is bounded on the east by the Schoodic Peninsula, and on the west by Mount Desert Island; parts of both are in Acadia National Park. It contains numerous islands, the largest of which is Ironbound Island. The bay extends for roughly 15 miles and spans 7 miles at its widest.

Pack a meal, bring your favorite non-alcoholic beverage, sit back and relax or, if you feel inspired, join the crew to hoist the sails or take a turn at the ship's wheel.

Please Note: Restroom facilities are available onboard for your convenience. In regards to weather, many different forecasts are monitored and will be considered when making a decision regarding cancellations. This tour is not necessarily cancelled for rain and/or fog. As the tour is designed to give guests the sailing experience in typical Maine weather.

Maine Tourism Logo

About the Tour

Your tour begins at the Bar Harbor Pier. From there, you’ll head west and hear about Bar Harbor’s early days as a fishing town and its transformation during the Gilded Age.

You’ll then have the chance to cross a land bridge to the beautiful, untouched Bar Island—a must-see for visitors! After that, you’ll enter the West Street Historic District, which is packed with gorgeous homes dating back to the Gilded Age!

The first major landmark you’ll find in the historic district is La Rochelle, an extravagant Gilded Age mansion that now functions as a museum. Continuing on toward the Primrose Inn, you’ll hear about a fire that ravaged the town, from how it started to how it changed Bar Harbor.

Next up are the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church, each displaying eye-catching and totally unique styles. Past those is the Jessup Memorial Library, which dates back almost 150 years!

At the Abbe Museum, up next, you’ll find a collection dedicated to the Native Wabanaki of the region. Then there’s the Village Green, designed by the same woman who designed the White House Rose Garden!

Then it’s time to stroll down Main Street, loaded with shops, restaurants, and cafes offering anything your heart desires.

Afterward, you’ll head to the Shore Path, which, as you might expect, leads you along the picture-perfect waterfront. As you walk and take in the scenery, you’ll learn more about Bar Harbor’s earliest history and how to spot some of the area’s prettiest wildflowers. You’ll also come across an extraordinary landmark deposited in Bar Harbor during the Ice Age!

Next is a personal tennis court-turned-public park, which is an excellent example of how Bar Harbor has transformed since the Gilded Age. Right next to that is the Bar Harbor Inn, an essential part of the town since 1887! Your tour concludes just beyond the inn, right by the spot where you began.

What You'll See

Welcome to bar harbor.

Your tour of Bar Harbor begins on the pier by Agamont Park, where you'll find plentiful parking. As you walk through this historic town, you'll see tons of beautifully preserved architecture, phenomenal ocean views, and much more. Plus, you'll learn plenty of fascinating history along the way!

Bar Island Trail

Bar Island Trail is a totally unique walking trail. It's a sandbar trail leading out to one of Bar Harbor's beautiful islands, but it only appears at low tide! If you're here at the right time, it makes for a positively magical stroll.

West Street Historic District

The West Street Historic District features rows of breathtaking historic homes, all dating between 1870 and 1910. Here, you'll learn how to identify which ones are the oldest!

The Tides, La Rochelle

Built in 1902, La Rochelle is a simply jaw-dropping estate. This enormous mansion has 41 rooms and a ton of history. It's now owned by the Maine Seacoast Mission Society, which purchased the property for only a dollar.

Primrose Inn

Built in 1878, this iconic structure only barely survived a huge fire that swept through Bar Harbor in 1947. Today, it continues to welcome visitors as a cozy bed and breakfast!

Holy Redeemer Catholic Church

This is a church which simply must be photographed. The impressive stonework, the imposing tower, and the gorgeous windows are all just begging to end up on Instagram!

St. Saviour's Episcopal Church

St. Saviour's Episcopal Church is a quirky architectural oddity. This church was built in multiple sections, with the oldest parts dating back to 1877 and the newest to the 1930s. The end result is an oddly endearing and totally unique structure.

Jesup Memorial Library

This historic library dates all the way back to 1877. At the time, it had only 250 volumes, almost all of which were donated by the town's wealthy residents. Since then, that small collection has continued to expand.

Abbe Museum

Abbe Museum celebrates the heritage of the native Wabanaki. Also known as the People of the Dawn, the Wabanaki lived in Bar Harbor long before it was Bar Harbor. Museum founder Robert Abbe wanted to honor that long history, and the museum now features exhibits encompassing 12,000 years of Native history in the region.

Village Green

Bar Harbor's village green isn't just any old park. It was designed by Beatrix Farrand, who also designed the Rose Garden at the White House! It features an 1896 street clock, a historic bandstand, and a fountain in the style of 17th century Italian fountains.

Main Street in Bar Harbor is packed with shops and restaurants. Whether you're feeling peckish, looking for a souvenir, or just want to soak in some picture-perfect small town sights, Main Street has what you need.

Shore Path is exactly what it sounds like: A relaxing path which runs alongside the ocean. Remarkably, this path actually dates back to the 1880s. It's also an absolutely unbeatable place to watch the sunrise.

Frenchman Bay

Frenchman Bay is a picturesque bay named for the French expeditions which came here as far back as the 1500s. Here, you'll learn just who led those expeditions, and what exactly they were looking for.

Balance Rock

Balance Rock is an unusual landmark which rests right next to the Shore Path. It's a glacial erratic, meaning a glacier dragged it a very long way before setting it down here. This boulder is estimated to have moved about 40 miles before setting up shop in Bar Harbor!

Once the site of a Gilded Age mansion, Grant Park is now just a pleasant, oceanside green space for all to enjoy. If you're looking for the ideal picnic spot, this is it!

Bar Harbor Inn

The Bar Harbor Inn is a seaside resort with a very long and complicated history. It was once a reading room where Bar Harbor's wealthy residents discussed literature and the matters of the day. Today, it has been converted into one of the most lavish hotels in the town. Your tour concludes just past this hotel, right near the pier where it began.

Bar Harbor Shore Excursions: Hike Through Acadia National Park

viator tours bar harbor maine

Bar Harbor is a sleepy town on Maine's southeastern coast, and one of the most enjoyable destinations that you'll have a chance to visit on your Canada and New England cruise.

This unassuming town was thrust into the national spotlight when President Barack Obama chose to vacation there with his family. The first family reportedly went hiking and sampled some of the town's very best ice cream as they enjoyed some quality time together.

Breathing in the great outdoors is the main attraction here, as Bar Harbor is very close to Acadia National Park. Spread out over 47,000 acres, this is one of the premier destinations in the U.S. for hikers, rock climbers, campers and more. Climb aboard a horse-drawn carriage to explore this picturesque location as you travel the forest for Acadia National Park tours

More adventurous travelers can ascend Cadillac Mountain, which is the highest point on the U.S.'s Eastern Seaboard. From October to March, this is the very first place that the sun's rays hit in the entire country. Even if you're not up early enough to catch the sunrise, Cadillac still offers gorgeous views of the entire area.

Back in town, there's plenty to do along the coast on Bar Harbor shore excursions. Head out on a whale-watching tour to see if you can spot one of these majestic animals frolicking in the waters. Bar Harbor shore excursions even offer a seal and lobster tour - something you won't find in many other places. Get to know these creatures up close, but don't feel bad when you head back to land and participate in a lobster bake.

Finally, one of the last natural phenomenon that you should try to catch in Bar Harbor is at Thunder Hole. Visit this area just before high tide to watch the waves crash into this natural inlet. When the water hits forcefully enough, it'll actually be pushed out a waterspout up to 40 feet in the air.
