Amex Membership Rewards Transfer Partners & How To Use Them [2023]

Amex Airline Transfer Partners

Amex hotel transfer partners, how to transfer membership rewards, american express transfer bonuses, earning amex membership rewards, should you transfer or book through amex, other ways to use your points, combining membership rewards from different accounts, redeeming membership rewards, final thoughts.

If you’re looking for a way to earn lots of points to redeem for some amazing travel, you can’t go wrong with American Express Membership Rewards credit cards. Amex provides a number of ways to earn Membership Rewards points and plenty of fun ways to redeem them for some great flights.

In this post, we’ll show you all of the American Express transfer partners, how to transfer Membership Rewards to these partners, and much more. With this guide in hand, you’ll be ready to book some amazing vacations!

The American Express Membership Rewards program has a ton of airline transfer partners.

Make sure you check the transfer rate (see below) since not all transfers are done at a 1:1 ratio.

Membership Rewards can also be transferred to 3 hotel rewards programs.

Like American Express airline partners, transfer ratios vary (see below), so make sure you check them before transferring.

Hot Tip: Use our transfer partner tool to see how many points you’ll get when you transfer your Amex Membership Rewards to their partner airlines and hotels!

With some Membership Rewards points in your account , it’s time to decide where you want to transfer your points so you can start traveling. Here are the simple steps to make the transfer process easy.

Step 1:  Select Earn and Redeem  from the menu.

Amex Membership Rewards

Step 2: Select Transfer Points under Redeem .

Earn and Redeem Amex Membership Rewards Points

Step 3: Choose your desired airline or hotel transfer partner and select Transfer Points . If you haven’t already, you will need to link your frequent flyer account to your Membership Rewards account. In the example below, we chose Delta Air Lines.

American Express Transfer Link Account

Step 4:  Once you have linked your airline or hotel account to your Membership Rewards account, choose how many points you would like to transfer. Transfers must be made in increments of 1,000.

Transfer Amex

Step 5: Confirm the number of points you are transferring and complete the transfer.

American Express Membership Rewards Transfer Confirm

Step 6:  Head over to the appropriate airline or hotel program to book your award flight or award stay.

Bottom Line: Transferring Amex points to partners is easy. Just have your loyalty program numbers handy and your Amex card details, and you’ll be good to go!

Transferring your points when there is a bonus is an ideal situation. Getting the most value out of every point you have is the key to getting those high-level redemptions!

Amex has previously offered both public and targeted transfer bonus offers of 15% to 40%. For example, if you were to transfer 10,000 points when a particular partner is offering a 40% bonus offer, your points would be worth 14,000 points after transfer.

However, you shouldn’t transfer points JUST because there is a bonus. It’s best to keep your points in a transferable account (like Amex, Capital One, Chase, Citi, or Marriott Bonvoy) until you have a specific redemption in mind.

American Express provides tons of opportunities to earn Membership Rewards points . Pick the card or combination of cards that will help you earn the most points and get the benefits that matter to you.

Booking Travel With the AmexTravel.com Portal

If you’re booking economy flights or hotels, don’t forget to check out AmexTravel.com , where you can book cash flights with points. Points are generally worth 1 cent each.

With The Business Platinum Card ® from American Express , each point is worth about 1.54 cents when booking on your preselected airline.

The boost is applied in the form of a 35% rebate , so you’ll still need the total points in your account at the time of booking. You can get up to 1 million points rebated per calendar year.

Let’s check out an example (below). If you have the Amex Business Platinum card and Delta Air Lines is your selected airline, this booking will cost 22,516 Membership Rewards points initially.

Once the rebate is applied, American Express will return 7,880 Membership Rewards to your account, which means this booking would actually cost you 14,636 points.

JFK to LAX Amex Travel Pay with Points

You might have noticed in the example above that the booking is a Membership Rewards Insider Fare .

This can make your bookings through AmexTravel.com even more valuable since American Express sometimes discounts flights if you pay entirely with points .

Consider the flights we discussed above. Booking this itinerary through AmexTravel.com costs 14,636 Membership Rewards points, and the booking still earns Delta SkyMiles as a paid fare rather than an award ticket.

If you were to transfer Membership Rewards to Delta and book this same itinerary as an award ticket, you would have to transfer 25,000 points to your SkyMiles account to book it. In this case, booking through the portal would be a much better deal.

This is clearly a time to book through AmexTravel.com rather than transferring points. To ensure you get the most out of your points every time, it’s important to check both the portal and transfer options when booking economy class.

AmexTravel.com also allows you to book hotels at up to 1 cent per point in value through Fine Hotels & Resorts .

You can also redeem your points for gift cards to merchants like Nike, Saks Fifth Avenue , Walmart, or Amazon , or use your points to shop for items from the Membership Rewards site.

Unfortunately, these are generally terrible uses of your hard-earned Membership Rewards points. To get the most value out of them, stick with travel redemptions!

If you have multiple cards that earn Membership Rewards, they can each be linked to the same account so your points will automatically collect in one place.

Generally, when you apply for a new card that earns Membership Rewards points, it will automatically be linked to your account.

One downside is that points cannot be transferred to your spouse or significant other’s Membership Rewards account.

However, you can transfer points to a frequent flyer program owned by any authorized users on your account, as long as they have been an authorized user for at least 90 days .

American Express Authorized User

While this isn’t a perfect solution, it still allows you to help friends and family book award flights.

Using your Membership Rewards points for travel is clearly the best way to use your points.

With so many airline transfer partners and tons of ways to redeem your points, it’s almost overwhelming!

To make the process a bit easier, we’ve compiled a list of the best ways to redeem your Membership Rewards for some amazing travel experiences.

American Express Membership Rewards points are tremendously useful if you want to travel. With so many ways to earn and redeem points, you can book award flights to just about anywhere in the world!

AmEx vs. Chase airline and hotel transfer partners

Amex membership rewards overview, chase ultimate rewards® overview, overlapping partners between chase and american express, how to earn chase ultimate rewards® and american express membership rewards points, how to decide if amex or chase is best for you.

In the world of miles and points, two loyalty programs reign supreme: Chase Ultimate Rewards® and American Express Membership Rewards. Each program's points are particularly valuable because they can be transferred to airline and hotel partners, as well as redeemed for travel, gift cards and statement credits.

Transferring points to airlines and hotels and redeeming for award flights/hotel nights can yield excellent value. We take a look at both programs and analyze AmEx and Chase’s best and worst transfer partners. In addition, we explain who benefits the most from each program and show you how to earn and maximize the points.

» Learn more: AmEx points vs. Chase points

Chase has 11 airline partners, while American Express has 20. Both programs also offer three hotel chains as transfer partners.

Although AmEx offers more partners, it doesn’t mean that AmEx’s program is superior. Rather, it's a matter of deciding which airlines or hotels you prefer.

For example, if you love Southwest Airlines and want to use your points for an award ticket on that airline, you’ll want to focus your efforts on earning Chase Ultimate Rewards® points because Southwest only partners with Chase.

Transfer partners

With a total of 21 partners (18 airlines, three hotels), AmEx points can be transferred to the following airlines and hotels.

Best American Express Membership Rewards transfer partners

Air Canada’s Aeroplan: Air Canada’s Aeroplan is a solid program due to its decent award chart and participation in the Star Alliance network. Aeroplan miles are great for booking award seats on United, Copa Airlines and many other Star Alliance carriers.

Air France / KLM’s Flying Blue: Air France / KLM’s Flying Blue is another useful option due to the airline’s monthly Promo Rewards , which are discounted award tickets to specific destinations. Although the airline adds high taxes and surcharges to award tickets, the discount on the number of miles can be as high as 50%.

British Airways: British Airways is a member of the Oneworld Alliance , so you could use your British Airways Avios to book flights on American Airlines . Although British Airways is notorious for adding high taxes and fuel charges on awards, you won't pay those fees on domestic American Airlines flights. Furthermore, since British Airways' award chart is distance-based, Avios are great for short-haul flights on American Airlines .

Weak American Express Membership Rewards transfer partners

JetBlue: AmEx’s poor transfer ratio to JetBlue makes this airline a weak partner. Instead of a 1:1 ratio, for every 250 AmEx points, you receive only 200 JetBlue points. While JetBlue is a solid program on its own, transferring AmEx points to the carrier would not be a great use of points.

Delta or Hawaiian Airlines: American Express charges excise tax offset fees on point transfers to domestic airlines of .06 cent per point. While this seems like a tiny amount, a transfer of 50,000 points will result in an annoying $30 fee. Keep this in mind for transfers to Delta, JetBlue and Hawaiian Airlines.

What else you need to know

Here's a closer look at American Express' transfer ratios, minimum transfer amounts and alliance memberships.

With the exception of Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines and JetBlue, the remaining airline partners are international. Don’t let this deter you, though — many of these international airlines participate in large airline alliance networks , offering plenty of opportunities for redemptions on domestic carriers.

For example, Avianca and United Airlines are both members of the Star Alliance . So you could transfer AmEx points to Avianca’s LifeMiles program , and then use LifeMiles miles to book an award ticket on United.

» Learn more: Your guide to airline alliances

Additionally, American Express often runs transfer bonuses, allowing you to maximize the amount of points you’re moving into your frequent flyer account. If you time a transfer bonus to coincide with an upcoming redemption, you could extract an excellent value out of your AmEx points.

How to transfer Membership Rewards points

The next page will show a list of airline and hotel programs, and you'll need to choose one. In our example, we’ve selected Hawaiian Airlines for a transfer.

To proceed with a transfer, you'll need to link your American Express Membership Rewards account to the HawaiianMiles program and verify your identity by entering the four-digit card ID and three-digit security code found on the card associated with your Membership Rewards account.

Once the accounts have been linked, you'll be able to transfer your points on the following page.

Chase transfer partners

Chase Ultimate Rewards® points can be transferred to 14 programs in total, comprising 11 airlines and three hotel chains.

Chase's airline and frequent flyer program partners

Air France / KLM — Flying Blue.

Air Canada — Aeroplan.

British Airways — Executive Club Avios.

JetBlue — TrueBlue.

Southwest Airlines — Rapid Rewards .

United Airlines — MileagePlus .

Virgin Atlantic — Flying Club.

Chase's hotel partners

Hyatt — World of Hyatt .

IHG — Rewards Club .

Marriott — Bonvoy.

The best Chase Ultimate Rewards® transfer partners

United: United is a great choice given the airline’s extensive reach and its participation in Star Alliance. Although United has eliminated its award chart , its award search tool is great for checking Star Alliance availability. Another positive is that United doesn’t charge taxes or surcharges on award tickets .

Virgin Atlantic: A lesser-known fact about Virgin Atlantic is that its miles can be used to book Delta award tickets on Virgin’s website. Despite the recent negative update to Virgin Atlantic's Delta award chart , a one-way award from the U.S. to Europe in the Delta One cabin is still only 50,000 Flying Club miles. Delta One is Delta’s international first class option, and the cabin offers lie-flat seats, a superior dining option during the flight and Sky Club lounge access at the airport (at point of departure only). If you were to book this ticket directly with Delta, you’d be subject to dynamic pricing. For example, let's consider the following flight from Boston to Amsterdam in Delta One.

On Virgin Atlantic, the flight costs 50,000 miles plus $5.60 in taxes.

who are amex travel partners

However, on the Delta website, you’d need to spend 80,000 SkyMiles plus $5.60 in taxes for the exact same flight.

who are amex travel partners

Not surprisingly, you could also use Flying Club miles to fly on Virgin Atlantic. However, we didn’t list this as a notable redemption given the high taxes assessed by the airline on its award tickets. If the high taxes don’t deter you, Virgin Atlantic's premium economy service is excellent.

Hyatt: Hyatt is the only Chase hotel transfer partner that’s worthy of mention. NerdWallet values Hyatt points at 2.3 cents each , which is above the valuation of any other hotel. Standard room award nights at Hyatt properties range from 3,500 to 35,000 points per night for off-peak bookings.

Weak Chase Ultimate Rewards® transfer partners

Marriott or IHG: Transferring to Marriott or IHG would not be ideal. NerdWallet values Marriott points at 0.8 cent and IHG points at 0.8 cent each. Given that you could redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards® through the travel portal for 1.5 cents each if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , you’d be better off booking a hotel room through Chase’s travel portal.

Here's a deep dive into the Chase transfer ratio, minimum transfer amounts and its alliance memberships.

You can transfer from Chase to airlines and hotels at a 1:1 ratio. Transfers are usually immediate, but can take up to seven business days. Unlike AmEx, transfers to JetBlue are at a 1:1 ratio, and Chase does not charge any fees when you move points to domestic airlines.

If you have points with AmEx and Chase and want to transfer to JetBlue, use your Chase points so you can benefit from the better rate and avoid the excise fee.

How to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards® points

Log into your Chase Ultimate Rewards® account and select your credit card. From the Earn / Use drop-down menu on the top left, choose Transfer to Travel Partners.

who are amex travel partners

On the next page, you’ll see all the different programs available for point transfers. For this example, we’ve chosen British Airways.

who are amex travel partners

To begin the process, you'll need to select a recipient from the drop-down menu, which will most likely be you unless you’ve linked your account to another person.

In the Member ID and Confirm Member ID fields, input your British Airways Avios number and then click Continue. The subsequent pages will ask you to enter how many points you’d like to transfer and confirm the amount.

Before transferring points from AmEx or Chase to an airline for a specific redemption, call the carrier’s customer service department and ask a representative to put the award ticket on hold in case the point transfer is not instantaneous.

There are nine airlines and one hotel that overlap as partners for both AmEx and Chase. Here are a few important things to know about the partners:

AmEx often runs transfer bonuses to airlines, so before considering a transfer to a partner that overlaps, check if AmEx is running a transfer promo.

Although JetBlue is a partner of both programs, if you do need to transfer points, you’d be better off transferring Chase points — Chase offers a 1:1 ratio, while AmEx offers a 5:4 ratio. Plus, AmEx charges excise fees on transfers to domestic airlines while Chase does not. The only instance a transfer from American Express Membership Rewards could make sense is if AmEx was running a JetBlue transfer bonus that equalized the ratio and offset the excise fee.

How to choose which points to transfer

If you want to book with a partner that overlaps both programs, you have both types of points and the transfer ratios are equal, which points should you use? Your decision can largely depend on:

How many points you already have with each issuer.

How easy it is to earn points based on your spending habits.

The cards you already have or are considering applying for.

Whether there is an ongoing transfer bonus.

If you’ve got your eye on some transfer partners and want to start earning AmEx Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards®, you may want to consider applying for a card that earns points with the corresponding program.

The fastest and easiest way to earn points with AmEx or Chase is through card welcome offers . The other way is to strategically use the cards for everyday purchases so you maximize your earnings on bonus categories.

You will need to satisfy a minimum spending requirement to receive the welcome offer. If you cannot meet the minimum spend without going into debt, it's better to hold off applying for the card, as any value you’d receive from the points will be wiped out by the finance charges you’d pay on carrying a balance.

In addition, before you start applying for any new cards, keep in mind Chase’s 5/24 rule, which limits the number of cards you can be approved for. In general, if you’re deciding between AmEx and Chase, apply for a Chase card first.

American Express has a popular and flexible Membership Rewards program that allows you to use your points for a number of purposes. With Membership Rewards, you can book travel, pay for purchases, find worthwhile experiences, buy gift cards, and more.

On top of that, American Express has travel partners that allow you to transfer your Membership Rewards points to 17 airline partners and three hotel loyalty programs, giving you the chance to fly for free and book free hotel stays.

This is one of the most popular ways to use points, since you have the ability to earn plenty of points using American Express credit cards and then use them wherever you can get the best value.

Amex airline transfer partners

Amex hotel transfer partners, how to transfer amex membership rewards to an airline or hotel partner, are there transfer “rules” i should know, faqs about amex transfer partners, what’s the benefit of using transfer partners over earning points and miles directly for the airline or hotel i want.

If you don’t want to be stuck with one airline loyalty program, you can transfer your American Express points to the following airlines and create a travel itinerary that works best for you.

Most of the airlines require you to transfer points in increments of 1,000. There are two exceptions: JetBlue, which requires increments of 250 points, and Qantas, which allows you transfer in increments of 500.

In terms of value, you can get a 1:1 transfer on most of the partner airlines.  Some airlines, like AeroMexico , give you better more than one point for each point you transfer, but you'll need to look at the redemption costs on the partner airline to see if you're actually getting more value.

You also have to consider factors like where you’re going and what to expect when it comes to booking. Some airlines might require you to jump through additional hoops to book flights using points, depending on the situation.

In some cases, it can make sense to transfer to a member of the same airline alliance for better value and then book using those points. For example, you could use Air Canada points to book a flight to Europe through any Star Alliance partner, such as Lufthansa or United. This could potentially get you a great deal on business class and first class tickets.

If you like to fly in comfort on a long flight or if you want to get more bang for your redemption points, this may be beneficial. For some travelers, being able to upgrade to business class on a trans-Atlantic flight is more valuable than getting a completely free ticket.

You also need to compare awards prices. For example, you might get a 1:1 transfer ratio, but the number of points it takes to redeem points for a flight can be high. For instance, if it takes 40,000 points to fly to Hawaii with one airline and 50,000 points to fly with another, you’ll get a better deal on the first airline.

How to know if you’re getting the best value

Whether you’re getting the best value depends, in large part, on what airline you’re most likely to use and the deals it offers for rewards travel. For example, I use Delta a lot because of where I live. Even though JetBlue is often cheaper, I’d have to drive three hours to get a JetBlue flight. Plus, JetBlue doesn’t fly everywhere I like to visit.

Review your preferred airlines rewards program or take a look at what kind of deals you can get based on your route. Even though I use Delta a lot and prefer to transfer my Amex points to that airline, there’s a good chance I’d consider Air France instead if I were flying to Europe. Air France often offers monthly promo awards through its Flying Blue program, so knowing I plan to take a European trip would change the way I evaluate value.

Carefully consider your options before moving forward to ensure you’re accomplishing what you want with your points transfer.

If you want to use your Amex Membership Rewards points on hotel booking, you can do that as well, with three different hotel rewards programs.

As you can see, you’ll get two Hilton Honors points for each Amex point you transfer. That feels like a great deal, and it might encourage you to focus on Hilton Honors. Indeed, Hilton regularly offers a number of promotions throughout the year, so it can be a great value.

However, Marriott Bonvoy has its own advantages, even though the transfer is only 1:1 from Amex. With Marriott, my experience has been that you often get free upgrades when they’re available, and the amount of points used to redeem a room is generally lower. There’s a little more flexibility with Bonvoy as well when it comes to partners and experiences. Bonvoy has a number of partners where you can use points, and it offers access to a wide variety of additional experiences that can be bought with points when you book travel.

Choice Hotels are often cheaper, so even though you can get a room for fewer points, the dollar value might not be the same. For example, I can get a room for 8,000 points with a Choice hotel when it would normally cost $89 (value of 0.011). However, I recently booked a $350 Marriott room during the week for 15,000 points (value of 0.023). Even though both have a 1:1 transfer rate, the Marriott program got me a better bang for my buck in this case.

As with the airlines, though, what hotel you transfer points to depends on where you want to go, what type of hotel you want to book, and what kind of amenities you want.

Whether you’re getting the best value depends in large part on your own preferences. For example, I prefer Marriott properties because of the amenities and upgrades as well as how easy it is to use points and cash.

On the other hand, Hilton Honors can be a great value because you can use top-rated credit cards to buy your way to Diamond status, which comes with elite benefits and upgrades. If you want to take advantage of that status to add value, transferring points to Hilton might make more sense.

Think about your goals and what makes the most sense based on your preferred program and what it offers. Value has a different meaning for each of us, so it’s important to make your evaluation based on what’s important to you — and whether you get it from your program.

Transferring your points is fairly straightforward. Here’s how it works:

  • Log into your Membership Rewards account and select “Travel” from the menu.
  • Select “Get Started” and you’ll be able to see your options for transfer partners.
  • Make sure you’ve linked your loyalty program to Membership Rewards.
  • Choose your preferred linked account.
  • Decide how many points you want to transfer. You’ll need to transfer points in increments of 1,000 for most partners.
  • Confirm the number of points you’re transferring.
  • Complete the transfer.

Once you’re done, you can check your partner account to see that the points are available, and then you can book your travel.

Realize transfers are final and cannot be undone once they’re completed. Before I make a move, I double check that I’ll be able to get the travel I want. In many cases, I just leave my points with Amex Membership Rewards until I’m ready to use them. If I’m 4,000 miles short for the Delta flight I want, that’s when I make the transfer — and only for the miles I need. If I’m wrong about where I want the points, there’s no sending them back.

Additionally, you might pay a small fee to transfer points to airlines — up to $99, depending on how many points you transfer. As a result, I’m more likely to create a strategy that involves earning airline points with a branded card or one of the best travel credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card , which allows you to earn extra points on travel and then redeem them for travel. I try to save the Amex points for hotel stays.

What airlines are partners with American Express?

Airline partners include:

  • Air France/KLM
  • British Airways
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Virgin Atlantic

Can I transfer my Amex points to someone else?

You can’t directly send your points to another person. However, if you add someone as an authorized user on your Amex account, you can send your points to their frequent flyer program.

In most cases, it makes sense to focus on adding someone you trust as an authorized user, since they’ll be able to use your account to make purchases.

Can I transfer Amex points to my spouse?

No. American Express doesn’t allow you to transfer points to anyone else — even a spouse.

Can you transfer Delta miles to American Express?

No. While you can transfer Delta SkyMiles to other SkyMiles members, you can’t send your miles to your American Express account and get points.

Which American Express cards have Membership Rewards?

The personal cards that offer access to the Membership Rewards program include:

  • American Express ® Gold Card
  • American Express ® Green Card

The Platinum Card ® from American Express

  • Amex EveryDay ® Credit Card
  • Amex EveryDay ® Preferred Credit Card
  • Blue from American Express ®

Can you use American Express points to upgrade a flight?

Yes, American Express has a program that allows you to use your points to bid for an upgrade on a reservation you’ve made. However, you will need to wait a few days to see if the airline accepts your bid.

You can also transfer American Express points to an eligible airline and upgrade your seat through the airline’s normal channels.

Do American Express points expire?

Your points won’t expire. However, if you close your linked credit card accounts, you could forfeit your points. If you plan to close your American Express Membership Rewards cards, make sure to spend your points or transfer them to an airline or hotel partner first.

One of the things I like best about Amex Membership Rewards is the flexibility. I can direct the points where they’re most effective. It also means I don’t have to be completely loyal to one company. While I do tend to show loyalty to particular brands, there are times I find better deals elsewhere — and want to take advantage of them.

Additionally, there’s a measure of protection with Membership Rewards. If an airline or hotel chain devalues its rewards, you’re stuck if all your points are in a specific loyalty program. With Amex points, you have the flexibility to focus on a different partner that offers better value.

In the end, it’s about figuring out what provides you with the best value based on your situation and preferences. Figure out how you can get the most points with spending and which credit cards offer the most flexibility and value. Then consider how you can use travel partners to make the most of your Amex Membership Rewards.

List of amex membership rewards transfer partners.

by The Travel Sisters | Apr 2, 2023 | American Express , Membership Rewards | 9 comments

List of Amex Membership Rewards Transfer Partners

Here is a current list of Amex Membership Rewards airline and hotel transfer partners .

Currently, American Express Membership Rewards has 20 transfer partners – 17 airline partners and 3 hotel partners.

Most of these transfer at a 1:1 ratio (meaning  1,000 Amex Membership Rewards points transfer to 1,000 miles/points) unless otherwise noted. American Express also periodically offers limited time transfer bonuses for transfers to certain partners. (right now there is a 30% transfer bonus to Hilton Honors).

List of Amex Membership Rewards Airlines

What airlines can you transfer American Express points to? Amex Amex Membership Rewards Travel Transfer Partners: Airlines

  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • AeroMexico (1,000 Membership Rewards = 1,600 Premier points)
  • Air Canada Aeroplan
  • Air France KLM Flying Blue
  • ANA Mileage Club
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  • Delta Skymiles
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Etihad Guest
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Iberia Plus
  • JetBlue TrueBlue (250 Membership Rewards points =  200 TrueBlue points)
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer (500 Membership Rewards points = 500 Qantas Points)
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • Virgin Atlantic FlyingClub

List of Amex Membership Rewards Hotels

Amex Membership Rewards Travel Transfer Partners: Hotel Travel Partners

  • Choice Privileges
  • Hilton Honors  (1,000 Membership Rewards points =  2,600 2,000 Hilton Honors Points -30% transfer bonus through April 30, 2023)
  • Marriott Bonvoy

Although they transfer at a great ratio, I would not transfer my Amex Membership Rewards points to Hilton Honors since there are several versions of Amex Hilton cards that earn Hilton points so they are very easy to earn elsewhere. I would rather transfer my American Express Membership Rewards points to one of the airline programs.

Here is a link of all the Membership Rewards transfer travel partners on the American Express website.

(For a guide on how to transfer Amex Membership Rewards points see  related post :  How to Transfer Amex Membership Rewards Points to Airlines .)

Would like to transfer some our points to Hyatt hotel program. How do we go about this?

Hyatt is not an Amex Membership Rewards partner so you cannot transfer. Do you have any Chase Ultimate Rewards points? Hyatt is one of the best transfer options of Ultimate Rewards: https://thetravelsisters.com/chase-ultimate-rewards-transfer-partners/

I need to transfer my membership points to an airline partner before closing my account. I don’t have any specific destination or plans at this moment. Which airline partner is the most flexible? Which airline partner has lowest fuel/surcharge? I’d like to transfer to United or American Airline until I figure out what to do. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi Chucky, I would recommend applying for the Amex Every Day Card before cancelling your card. The Every Day card has no annual fee and that way you can keep your membership rewards points in your account indefinitely even if you open and close other Amex cards. All your membership rewards points pool into one account even if earned from different credit cards. If you still need to move points, American Airlines is a good option. You cannot transfer to United.

I would like to transfer some of my AMEX Membership Rewards Point to RJ Royal Plus Millage.

I would like to obtain tickets on emirates air to fly to Africa in may 2018. How soon can I make reservations? May I use Amex points?

Can I transfer my Amex points to my Qantas frequent flyer point scheme?

No you cannot transfer Amex points to Qantas. You can book Qantas flights using British Airways so you could transfer to them.

I would like to fly Qatar airways, how do I transfer my Amex platinum points to Qatar Qmiles?

Thank you Rene

Here are 9 of our favorite ways to use Amex Membership Rewards points

Andrew Kunesh

Editor's note: This story has been updated with the latest information.

It's no secret that American Express Membership Rewards are my favorite points and miles currency .

Over the years, Membership Rewards have given me tens of thousands of dollars in value. I've used these points to fly everything from Lufthansa first class to countless domestic hops booked at the last minute. Many of these trips would've been financially impossible without the help of my Membership Rewards.

And I'm not the only one that finds Membership Rewards super valuable.

TPG's latest valuations tie Membership Rewards with Chase Ultimate Rewards points as the most rewarding transferable points currency in TPG's monthly valuations at 2 cents per point. However, it's easy to get even more value out of your points by leveraging the right transfer partners.

To prove this value to you, we'll take a look at some of the best ways to redeem your Membership Rewards points in this article. We'll discuss everything from ultra-high-end business class redemptions to domestic flights around the U.S., looking at how to stretch your points for the best possible travel experience.

Transfer your way to your next destination in record time – download the free TPG App to see where your points could take you!

Before we start, however, you need to actually earn Membership Rewards points. The best way to quickly do this is by utilizing welcome offers on the issuer's top credit cards — here's a look:

  • The Platinum Card® from American Express : Earn 80,000 Membership Rewards® Points after spending $8,000 on purchases in your first six months of card membership. However, some readers have been targeted for up to a 100,000-point bonus using the CardMatch tool (offer subject to change at any time). Terms apply.
  • American Express® Gold Card : Earn 60,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $6,000 on eligible purchases with your new card within the first six months of card membership. However, some readers have been targeted for an even higher welcome offer using the CardMatch tool (offer subject to change at any time). Terms Apply.
  • The Business Platinum Card ® from American Express : Earn 120,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $15,000 on eligible purchases with the Business Platinum Card within the first three months of card membership. Terms apply.

Once you have one of these cards, you can earn even more Amex points by shopping through Rakuten or when you buy (or sell) a house using a participating agent with RBN .

Now, let's dive into the best ways to use Membership Rewards points!

Transfer partners

The best way to spend your Amex points is through transfer partners. The program partners with 20 different airlines , including ANA , JetBlue and Virgin Atlantic . You also have the option to transfer your points to three hotel chains : Hilton , Marriott and Choice.

You can book flights or hotels directly through Amex Travel , but redeeming points with a transfer partner usually results in a better redemption value. This is because Amex Travel only lets you redeem at a set 1 cent per point value for flights, while transfers can yield a much higher value.

Most Membership Rewards transfers process instantly, while others can take up to 48 hours. Make sure to check out our guide to Membership Rewards transfer times for more information.

Cheap American Airlines International Flights

who are amex travel partners

Although Etihad isn't a member of one of the three major alliances, it has non-alliance airline partnerships that yield excellent value. One of the best values is using Etihad Guest points to book American Airlines-operated flights at prices similar to what American charged before its 2016 devaluation .

The best deals are for international business and first-class flights on American's large international route network. Here's a look at Etihad's American award chart for flights departing North America.

who are amex travel partners

These rates are often much lower than you'd pay if you booked directly with American. For example, you can use 30,000 miles to book a one-way ticket from any U.S. city to Lima (LIM), Bogota (BOG) or other cities in the "Central/South America 1" region. This includes many cities in Central America and northern South America.

Or, you can fly to Europe in business class for 50,000 points one-way. This is cheaper than the 57,500+ miles that American charges for the same tickets, giving you cheap access to American's large European route network. This includes cities like Frankfurt, Paris and others.

Finally, you can use Etihad Guest to get a solid deal on American's premium transcontinental first and business class from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The San Francisco route is operated by American's specially configured A321T aircraft with a true first-class cabin. This costs just 32,500 points one way when you book with Etihad Guest.

Incredible redemptions with Virgin Atlantic

who are amex travel partners

Virgin Atlantic is another great example of an airline leveraging individual partnerships instead of an alliance membership to build a valuable loyalty program .

Each Virgin Atlantic partner has a different award chart, but you'll want to pay the closest attention to Delta and ANA for the best value

Related: How to find and book Virgin Atlantic partner awards

Delta Air Lines

Virgin Atlantic devalued its Delta award chart last year but kept one sweet spot: 50,000-point flights from the U.S. to Europe in Delta One business class. This pricing applies to all nonstop Delta tickets from the U.S. — connecting tickets are subject to extra mileage.

This is a great way to fly Delta from the U.S. to one of its many European destinations. Likewise, it's substantially cheaper than transferring points to Delta SkyMiles for the same award ticket.

For example, this flight from New York to Zurich costs the stated 50,000 points and $5.60 in taxes and fees:

who are amex travel partners

The same flight costs an insane 215,000 Delta SkyMiles and $5.60 on the same date:

If you're booking a Delta One ticket to Europe, always check Virgin Atlantic first. It consistently prices lower than Delta and other SkyTeam programs on these routes.

Related: 3 great ways to redeem Virgin Atlantic points now that Delta awards are devalued

While this is a much more narrow use, Virgin Atlantic's ANA award chart has to be one of the single best sweet-spot redemptions in the entire points-and-miles world. The chart below shows round-trip prices:

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club redemption chart on ANA

This means you can fly from West Coast airports like Los Angeles or San Francisco to Tokyo's Narita International Airport (NRT) or Haneda International Airport (HND) in ANA first class for only 110,000 miles round-trip . That's less than some airlines charge for a one-way ticket, essentially giving you a 50% discount.

ANA first-class tickets sometimes cost $16,000 or more , so this is an easy way to get more than 10 cents per point in value.

You'll still get a great deal flying from other U.S. cities for 120,000 miles round-trip. Booking business class will only require 90,000-95,000 miles round-trip. One-way tickets are bookable at half the listed mileage cost.

You can also use this trick to book a mini-round-the-world trip with an open-jaw itinerary . This is when you depart from one city and return to another. So, you could use this to book JFK to HND as your outbound flight and HND to LHR as your "return" flight. This itinerary costs just 120,000 points in total.

United and Alaska flights to Hawaii

who are amex travel partners

Hawaii is a dream for many travelers — and it's easy to see why. From the great city of Honolulu to Maui and Kona's vast beaches, the islands truly have it all. You can book flights to the islands on United and Alaska Airlines by transferring your Membership Rewards points to Singapore Airlines Krisflyer.

Those on the West Coast should book Alaska flights with these miles. The two airlines have a non-alliance partnership that offers ultra-cheap nonstop flights to Hawaii from cities including Los Angeles, Seattle and Portland, among others.

You'll pay just 13,500 Krisflyer miles for a one-way flight from California, Oregon, or Washington to any Hawaiian islands. Just note that Singapore doesn't let you book Alaska flights with stops, so you're restricted to booking flights from one of Alaska's various hubs. You also need to call in to book these awards.

Those based elsewhere in the country can book nonstop or connecting flights with United Airlines. You'll pay 19,500 points for a one-way economy ticket or 39,00 for business class. This includes United's long-haul nonstop flights from Newark, Chicago and Washington D.C. to Honolulu.

This can be an excellent deal if you manage to book one of the long flights from the Midwest or East Coast. These flights are operated by wide-body aircraft with lie-flat seats. Check out Zach Honig's review of Newark to Honolulu in United First to look at what to expect on board.

Fly the world's longest nonstop flight in comfort

who are amex travel partners

Singapore Airlines operates two of the world's longest flight : Singapore Changi International Airport (SIN) to EWR and JFK. It's an excellent way to travel to one of Asia's most modern big cities and connect to other countries like Malaysia, India and Indonesia.

Of course, you're not going to want to spend 18 hours in an uncomfortable seat — so use your Membership Rewards to fly business class.

Both routes cost 111,500 points plus taxes and fees one-way, a small price to pay for comfort on such a long flight.

who are amex travel partners

Onboard, you can expect top-notch service and dining. Plus, the seat is nothing to scoff at either — it's fully lie-flat and has a fully stocked entertainment selection. Think of it like a five-star hotel room and restaurant that whisks you around the world.

Iberia flights to Madrid

who are amex travel partners

Booking premium-cabin award flights to Europe can be a complicated and expensive endeavor, but Iberia's distance-based award chart is one of the best options to consider.

There are two things to keep in mind with distance-based award charts. The first is that sweet spots are likely to be between individual city pairs with nonstop flights. This is different from a zone-based award chart, where the sweet spots cover flights between all cities that fall into the corresponding region(s) you're traveling.

Second, you'll typically be punished for taking connecting routings, so you'll want to stick to the shortest nonstop flight you can find. That might even mean taking a domestic positioning flight to kick off your award ticket.

With that in mind, Iberia's award chart for transatlantic flights to and from Madrid (MAD) offers some incredible values. Here are the one-way award prices:

Off-peak business class flights offer the best deal. You can fly from New York-JFK and Boston (BOS) to Madrid for just 34,000 Avios in economy, 50,000 in premium economy and 68,000 in business class. Yes, those are round-trip prices. Considering that most airlines charge 50,000 to 60,000 miles for a one-way business-class flight to Europe, is an absolute steal. Even longer flights to Madrid from Los Angeles or San Francisco are attractively priced — here's a look at off-peak pricing:

  • Economy: 51,100
  • Premium economy: 76,500 Avios
  • Business: 102,000 Avios

Booking these awards through Iberia not only lets you save your hard-earned points but also helps you minimize the taxes and fees that you'll pay . If you book the same round-trip business-class award from JFK to Madrid using British Airways, you'd pay the same 84,000 Avios but have to fork over $1,000+ in taxes and fees. Booking through Iberia costs a much more reasonable $211.

Round-trip business class flights to Europe

who are amex travel partners

Another great way to get to Europe is transferring points to ANA Mileage Club and booking Star Alliance flights.

While you can book any Star Alliance partner with these miles, European partners like Lufthansa and Swiss add huge fuel surcharges to their tickets. These can add up to well over $1,000 round-trip on a business class ticket, so stick with United if you want to keep taxes and fees low. You can also book with low-surcharge carriers like Air Canada, LOT Polish Airlines, TAP Portugal or SAS.

ANA Mileage Club charges just 88,000 miles for a round-trip business class flight from the U.S. to Europe. This is an exceptional deal as it's just over what most other Star Alliance carriers charge for a one-way ticket. Plus, you can also add a stopover on another airline, letting you see two European cities on one trip. This may slightly raise the taxes and fees but are generally worth it if your connecting flight is in business class.

If you're looking for a basic round-trip redemption, you can book something like this TAP Portugal itinerary from New York to Lisbon for 88,000 points and just over $55 in taxes and fees.

who are amex travel partners

Or, you can spice things up by adding a stopover and booking New York to Lisbon for a stopover before continuing to Madrid. Then, you can fly home via Lisbon for the same 88,000 points. Taxes and fees rise slightly to roughly $88, but this depends on the itinerary you book.

Whatever you book, you can get a solid deal when you book low-fuel surcharge carriers to Europe with ANA Mileage Club — especially if you maximize your included stopover.

Round-the-world on SkyTeam carriers

who are amex travel partners

Continuing on the path of international business class, you can transfer your points to Aeromexico Club Premier to book round-the-world tickets on SkyTeam carriers. These tickets let you visit multiple cities on various continents while sampling a ton of SkyTeam carriers. Aeromexico's round-the-world pass pricing is extremely reasonable and there's just a small list of restrictions to keep in mind.

On the pricing side, you'll pay 224,000 Aeromexico points in economy or 352,000 in business class. Membership Rewards points transfer to Aeromexico at a rate of 1:1.6 transfer ratio. This means a pass costs 140,000 or 220,000 Membership Rewards points for economy and business class, respectively. I think it's worth the extra points to fly business class — especially if you're doing a true round-the-world trip.

Here's a look at the restrictions to keep in mind when you book a round-the-world ticket with Aeromexico:

  • Travel must continue in the same direction, east or west.
  • Travel must begin and end in the same country.
  • You can have a minimum of three or a maximum of 15 stopovers, with no more than five per continent. A stopover is defined as any city where you remain for 24 hours before continuing your travel.
  • All flights must be booked in the same class of service.
  • Pass is valid for one year from the date of issue.

This gives you a ton of flexibility in how you plan out your round-the-world ticket. I whipped up a quick example that routes you through Central America, Europe and Asia before returning to the U.S. via Hawaii — here's a look:

  • Los Angeles to Mexico City – Aeromexico.
  • Mexico City to Panama City – Aeromexico.
  • Panama City to Paris – Air France.
  • Paris to Prague – Czech Airlines.
  • Prague to Bucharest – TAROM.
  • Bucharest to Istanbul – TAROM.
  • Istanbul to Seoul – Korean Airlines.
  • Seoul to Honolulu – Korean Airlines.
  • Honolulu to Los Angeles – Delta Air Lines.

This all fits into the criteria above and lets you see eight cities, all while flying some of SkyTeam's best business class products. To book this, you'd have to find SkyTeam award space using your favorite SkyTeam search tool . Then, call Aeromexico to book the award.

One last thing: Aeromexico passes on fuel surcharges for carriers that charge them. You can check by searching for your flights with ITA Matrix and looking for the "YQ" line on the flight's pricing breakdown. You may also be responsible for paying some taxes and other fees levied by local governments, the operating carrier or Aeromexico.

Book Choice hotels around the world

The Choice Privileges program is lesser-known than the bigger chains like Marriott and Hilton, but it's still worth a look. You can still get value by transferring Membership Rewards to Choice Privileges, with awards starting at just 8,000 points per night.

Choice has a wide range of brands and properties around the world. On the low end, you can use 8,000 points per night to book a stay at the Econo Lodge in downtown Salt Lake City. While not the most luxurious property, it's a nice option if other hotels are out of your price range.

who are amex travel partners

The hotel company also has conveniently located hotels outside of major cities. For example, you can use 10,000 points per night to book the Comfort Inn near the Six Flags theme park in Gurnee, IL, a suburb of Chicago. This can be a good option for a staycation or a stop on a long road trip.

who are amex travel partners

Things get more exciting when you travel abroad. There are a handful of properties in Tokyo that can be booked for 8,000 points per night. The centrally located Comfort Hotel Tokyo Kanda is one of them. The rooms look solid, and it's within walking distance of public transit.

who are amex travel partners

Of course, Choice has higher-end options too. You can spend 20,000 points for a Hotel Christiania Teater — a member of Choice's higher-end Ascend Hotel Collection. This hotel has unique rooms, a beautiful lobby and a central location that gives you easy access to everything Oslo offers. That said, cash rates can be cheap, so do your own research to see if paying with points is a good idea.

who are amex travel partners

Hilton is also a transfer partner, but earning Hilton points is easy via paid stays or cobranded cards like the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card and Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card . So we don't recommend transferring Membership Rewards to Hilton Honors unless you're just short points for an award booking.

The information for the Hilton Aspire Amex Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Book short-haul flights with Avianca LifeMiles, Avios or Delta SkyMiles

who are amex travel partners

You don't have to jet halfway around the world to get a great redemption. You have plenty of options if you're looking for a great deal on domestic flights. The three best transfer partners for domestic flights — LifeMiles, Avios and SkyMiles — span the three major airline alliances. So you can book tickets with the Big 3 U.S. carriers and Alaska Airlines.

Book American flights with British Airways Avios

British Airways Avios are the best way to book domestic flights operated by American and Alaska Airlines. The program has a distance-based award chart, so you'll pay more Avios for longer flights, but short and mid-haul domestic flights are the award chart's sweet spots for Oneworld flyers.

Flights that are 1,151 miles or shorter can be booked for just 9,000 Avios. This is a solid way to use your points if cash flights are otherwise expensive. Think peak travel times like holidays, conferences and school breaks.

who are amex travel partners

One thing to note about Avios: it charges per leg, so you'll pay more for connecting flights. In most cases, you should only use Avios to book nonstop flights. You're better off booking connecting flights with LifeMiles, SkyMiles or American AAdvantage miles, if you have them.

Related: Here's why you should care about British Airways Avios

Book United flights with LifeMiles

LifeMiles is the loyalty program for Avianca, a Star Alliance member. This means you can book United flights with your LifeMiles, and there are some excellent deals to be had.

The program has kept a standard award chart, so you'll pay a predictable price for your flights. The program splits the U.S. up into three regions. You can view the regions and flight prices on LifeMile's United partner page.

While the award chart shows flights starting at 7,500 LifeMiles one-way, there's a hidden 6,500 LifeMile tier that's reserved for short flights like Newark to Pittsburgh. These business-heavy routes can get expensive when booking at the last minute or during peak times, so it helps to have a low-cost points option in your back pocket.

who are amex travel partners

You can score solid deals on longer flights too. You'll pay 7,500 LifeMiles for mid-haul flights such as Chicago to Philadelphia and Newark. On the other hand, even longer routes will cost 10,000 LifeMiles or 12,500 LifeMiles one-way, which is still a good deal if cash tickets are expensive.

who are amex travel partners

Domestic first class isn't a terrible deal either. This flight from Newark (EWR) to Austin (AUS) is just 15,000 LifeMiles one-way, a mere 2,500 LifeMiles more than an economy ticket.

Book Delta flights with SkyMiles

If Delta is your airline of choice, you can transfer your Membership Rewards points to Delta SkyMiles . Unlike Avios and LifeMiles, the airline has dynamic pricing, so prices change by route, date and when you search. That said, we've found that domestic flights are generally one of the best ways to get value from the program.

For example, check out this flight from Chicago to Detroit — it costs as few as 4,500 SkyMiles one-way in basic economy. This is a pretty excellent deal on this route, especially if cash fares are expensive.

who are amex travel partners

Long transcontinental flights offer great deals too. For example, this flight from New York to Los Angeles costs just 9,000 SkyMiles in basic economy and 12,000 in standard economy. This is an excellent redemption for one of the longest domestic flights in the U.S.

Wells fargo launches a new travel rewards program with 6 transfer partners and more to come, qualified wells fargo cardholders will get a big boost to their rewards points' value..

thumbnail

Wells Fargo is making a big splash with the introduction of a transferable travel rewards program. Starting April 4, 2024, you'll be able to transfer Wells Fargo Rewards points to six travel loyalty programs and more partners are expected to be added. Transfers will be available for all points-based Wells Fargo credit cards , such as the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card and the new Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Journey Visa® Card . If you have either of these cards, you'll be able to combine rewards from any other Wells Fargo-branded consumer card and transfer those rewards to the new travel partners.

CNBC Select has the details of what we know about this program so far and how it compares to other credit card rewards programs .

What credit cards earn transferable Wells Fargo Rewards?

There are currently two Wells Fargo rewards credit cards that will allow point transfers once the system is in place:

Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card

  • Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Journey Visa® Card (open for in-branch applications on March 9, 2024, and online applications on March 20, 2024)

The Autograph card has no annual fee, earns 3X points in useful spending categories and offers an intro 0% APR for new cardholders. It's uncommon for a no-annual-fee card to earn transferable points, and given this card's other benefits it's easily among the best travel credit cards with no annual fee .

Earn unlimited 3X points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans. Plus earn 1X points on other purchases

Welcome bonus

Earn 20,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months - that's a $200 cash redemption value.

$0 annual fee

0% intro APR for 12 months from account opening on purchases

Regular APR

20.24%, 25.24% or 29.99% variable APR

Balance transfer fee

Up to 5%, min: $5

Excellent/Good

See rates and fees , terms apply.

The Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Journey Visa® Card is a mid-tier travel credit card with a $95 annual fee that can be partially offset by a $50 annual airfare credit. The rewards it earns for hotel (5X points) and airline (4X points) purchases are hard to beat because you'll get that high rate of return regardless of how you book (e.g., you don't have to book through the issuer's travel portal).

Cardholders also get 3X points on other travel spending and dining purchases, which makes this card one of the most rewarding options for common travel expenses. It has additional perks such as cell phone protection , trip cancellation and interruption protection and no foreign transaction fees .

Wells Fargo told CNBC Select that the rewards you earn from any Wells Fargo-branded consumer cards can be converted into transferable points, provided you also have either the Autograph or the Autograph Journey card. For example, the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card earns 2% cash rewards back on all purchases (see rates and fees ) and if you also have the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card , you'll be able to transfer those rewards to Wells Fargo travel partners.

Wells Fargo Rewards travel partners

There are currently six Wells Fargo Rewards transfer partners, and it has said more will be announced this year. As of April 4th, you'll be able to transfer Wells Fargo points to these five airline partners at a 1:1 ratio:

  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • Air France/KLM Flying Blue (partners with Delta)
  • Avianca LifeMiles (partners with United Airlines)
  • British Airways Executive Club (partners with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines)
  • Iberia Plus (partners with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines)

In addition, Wells Fargo points transfer to Choice Hotels at a 1:2 ratio.

While this is a smaller list of partners, it's a decent start because it gives you access to award flights with all three of the major airline alliances. There are quite a few sweet spots (a flight or hotel stay that gives you outsized value for your rewards) that you can book with this initial group of programs.

Use Wells Fargo Rewards for Oneworld flights

British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus are all part of the Oneworld alliance , which includes American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Iberia is an excellent option for business-class award flights to Europe because you can book one-way off-peak business-class flights from a handful of U.S. cities to places like Barcelona and Madrid for only 34,000 points each way. If Ireland is on your bucket list, Aer Lingus offers one-way awards to the Emerald Isle from East Coast cities such as Boston and New York for 13,000 points on off-peak dates. You can even fly from West Coast cities such as San Francisco or Seattle to Dublin for only 16,250 points each way on off-peak dates. The best part is, over 30 weeks of the year qualify for off-peak prices.

Use Wells Fargo Rewards for Star Alliance flights

Avianca may have the most versatile program of Wells Fargo's partners. It's a member of the Star Alliance , which is the largest global airline alliance. When you transfer points to Avianca, you can book awards flights with airlines such as United , Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines and Air Canada. You can book one-way business-class awards from the U.S. to Europe for around 63,000 miles or one-way domestic awards starting at 7,500 miles or less. Avianca charges a $25 award booking fee but it doesn't add fuel surcharges, so the fees are generally less than other options for international business class awards.

Use Wells Fargo Rewards for SkyTeam flights

Flying Blue is the loyalty program for Air France and the Dutch airline KLM (both part of the SkyTeam alliance , which includes Delta) and it has several features that make it extremely useful. There are monthly Promo Rewards which include discounts of 25%-50% on different routes and classes of service. You can also add free stopovers on many award flights, which unlocks all sorts of options. You could book a flight to Germany and add in a free visit to Paris for no additional miles, and each stopover can last from 24 hours to up to a year.

Use Wells Fargo Rewards for hotel deals in Norway and Japan

Choice Hotels is the only Wells Fargo hotel partner. It includes brands such as EconoLodge, Rodeway Inn, Comfort, Quality Inn and Sleep Inn, which typically aren't the most aspirational properties to visit. However, it also includes upscale brands such as Cambria Hotels and the Ascend Hotel Collection. Certain geographic areas offer great value for Choice points (especially when you factor in the 1:2 transfer ratio with your Wells Fargo rewards), and include locations in Norway and Japan.

Choice Hotels award prices vary, but you can book The Clarion Hotel The Hub in Oslo, Norway for 16,000 Choice points per room on dates it costs $350+ a night. You'd only need 8,000 Wells Fargo points to book a night, which is a value of over four cents per point. This is an exceptionally nice hotel and includes a free full breakfast spread which may feature ingredients from its rooftop garden. In Japan, there are lots of Choice Hotels available for 8,000 Choice points per night (4,000 Wells Fargo points). While the Japanese Choice Hotels generally cost less, you can often get a solid value per point. With the Autograph Journey's welcome bonus of 60,000 points, you could realistically book all your hotels for a two-week trip to Japan.

How this travel program stacks up against the competition

It's difficult to judge Wells Fargo Rewards against other programs such as Chase Ultimate Rewards® , Citi ThankYou or American Express Membership Rewards because these other programs have been around for years. Wells Fargo has far fewer partner programs, but it will grow from here.

Wells Fargo's partnerships overlap with other travel rewards programs, which makes the rewards you earn potentially more useful. If you want to book an expensive business-class award with Avianca, you could transfer points from American Express, Capital One and Wells Fargo to the same Avianca account. So as it stands, Wells Fargo Rewards are at the very least a strong supplement to other rewards you may have, and it also has several cards with unusually high rates of return in specific categories.

However, anyone who wants to use credit card rewards for hotel stays may have more flexible options than Wells Fargo points right now. For hotel awards, most people are better off with a card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , which earns points you can transfer to Marriott, IHG and Hyatt. With the Sapphire Preferred , you can also book hotels through the Chase Travel portal and pay with points at an elevated value of 1.25 cents each. That means that Chase Ultimate Rewards® currently gives you more options for booking hotel stays with points.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

Enjoy benefits such as 5x on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3x on dining, select streaming services and online groceries, 2x on all other travel purchases, 1x on all other purchases, and $50 annual Ultimate Rewards Hotel Credit, plus more.

Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $750 when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

If you're a loyal Choice Privileges member or can take advantage of one of the program's sweet spots, Wells Fargo's 1:2 transfer ratio can be a stellar deal. Plus the Autograph Journey card earns 5X points at hotels, so you could effectively earn 10X Choice points on hotel spending. The only other major rewards program that matches Wells Fargo's 1:2 transfer ratio to Choice is Citi ThankYou . You can access all of Citi's transfer partners with a card such as the Citi Premier® Card . For a limited time, you can earn 10X points on hotels and car rentals booked through the Citi Travel portal (valid through June 30, 2024).

Bottom line

Wells Fargo is revamping its rewards program and adding transfer partners to select cards. While the list of travel partners is smaller than other programs, this can dramatically increase the value of the rewards you earn with Wells Fargo's travel credit cards. If you're looking for a travel credit card, the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card and Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Journey Visa® Card are both options worth considering.

There’s a new entrant to the travel rewards cards scene and it’s coming in hot. Meet the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card * The information for the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. , a $95 annual fee card flush with travel benefits, including a roster of 1-to-1 airline and hotel transfer partners. Here’s what you need to know if you’re interested in adding this compelling new card to your wallet.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card rewards and details

For its relatively low $95 annual fee, the new Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card * The information for the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. boasts an uncapped 5 points per $1 on hotels, 4 points per $1 on airlines, 3 points per $1 on other travel and dining and 1 point per $1 on other purchases. These market-leading earning rates are among the best on any travel credit card — even when compared to those with far pricier annual fees.

“Autograph Journey is Wells Fargo’s best travel rewards card to date, designed to help cardholders build journeys as unique as they are by earning points wherever they book travel,” Krista Phillips, EVP, head of consumer credit cards and enterprise marketing at Wells Fargo, said in a press release. “Autograph Journey’s highly competitive value proposition with rich rewards lets travelers enjoy more extraordinary adventures, more often.”

To make redeeming those points more rewarding, Wells Fargo has finally introduced point transfers to its rewards program. Cardholders can transfer their points at a 1:1 ratio to Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Avianca Lifemiles, British Airways Executive Club, AerClub, and Iberia Plus. They also can transfer points to the Choice Privileges hotel program at a favorable 1:2 ratio.

Notably, you can also pool your rewards earned on the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card or the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card with the new Autograph Journey card for maximum points-earning potential.

This long-awaited benefit will help the issuer compete against popular programs like Amex Membership Rewards® and Chase Ultimate Rewards® and more partners will continue to be added throughout the year, according to Wells Fargo. Other reward redemptions are available at a simple rate of 1 cent apiece, whether getting a statement credit or booking travel through the Wells Fargo portal.

The new Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card is a natural step up from the popular no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card , which also gets a user boost with access to these new transfer partners. Beyond the added travel perks, the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa offers a $50 annual statement credit for airfare purchases, effectively slashing that $95 annual fee by more than half.

Lastly, the card acts as a jack-of-all-trades whether you’re on the go or staying closer to home, with trip cancellation/interruption insurance, cellphone protection, lost luggage reimbursement and no foreign transaction fees. Another attractive perk is Autograph Card Exclusives, which provides special access to “big-name artists in small concert venues,” according to a Wells Fargo representative.

A new credit card hitting the market is a relatively rare event, and a new rewards program happens even less often. The new Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card* begins taking online applications March 20 and coincides with the launch of Wells Fargo’s new travel rewards program. Both will give Wells Fargo a competitive edge in the travel credit card space, which has been previously dominated by competitors like Chase , American Express and Capital One .

We have the basics you need to know about this new card, plus four insider tips to help decide if you should make plans to add the Autograph Journey to your credit card lineup.

What you need to know about the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card

Before we dive into the hidden features and benefits, here’s an overview of what you can expect with the Autograph Journey when online applications open on March 20:

  • Earn 60,000 welcome bonus rewards points after spending $4,000 in purchases within three months of account opening
  • Earn unlimited 5x points on hotels, 4x points on airlines, 3x points on other travel and dining and 1x on other purchases
  • Receive an annual statement credit with a $50 minimum airline purchase
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Other benefits include trip cancellation and interruption insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, roadside dispatch and cell phone insurance
  • $95 annual fee

4 important details about the Autograph Journey

Here’s a rundown of four facts we discovered about the Autograph Journey that you should know when deciding whether to apply.

1. You can transfer points with Wells Fargo point-based cards

The launch of the Autograph Journey also marks the first transferable points program from Wells Fargo, which joins other card issuers like Chase and Capital One, which have their own pooling programs .

Autograph Journey will be able to do a points transfer with the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card . This is especially notable since the Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card offers bonus rewards in different categories than the Autograph Journey.

For example, the Autograph card earns unlimited 3x points on restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans, plus 1x points on other purchases. So you can maximize your point earning across different categories, then transfer your points to your Autograph Journey account to access premium travel redemptions.

2. It offers more options for earning bonus miles on travel than some competitors

The Autograph Journey will offer more flexibility than many travel rewards cards when it comes to earning more points on travel purchases. For example, cardholders earn unlimited 5x points on hotels booked directly with hotel brands and 4x points on airfare booked with airlines.

This helps the card stand out from other popular travel credit cards that offer the most bonus points only if you book travel through their portals. For example, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card * and the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card * only offer the highest bonus rewards on travel booked through Capital One Travel. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card also offers its highest rate of 5X points on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards, whereas other travel purchases earn 2X points.

Autograph Journey cardholders also earn a minimum of 3x points on other travel purchases, which could include rental cars, cruises and travel booked through online travel agencies like Expedia and Priceline.

3. The card may grow in value as more transfer partners join

The Autograph Journey Card will earn flexible travel rewards points that transfer to a selection of airline and hotel partners, similar to Amex Membership Rewards points or Chase Ultimate Rewards . While the list of transfer partners is limited, Wells Fargo stated in its initial press release that “more partners will continue to be added throughout the year.”

Points transfers could dramatically change the value proposition of the Autograph Journey, especially if new partners include domestic airlines and popular hotel loyalty programs.

Wells Fargo point transfers will be available to new cardholders starting on April 4. For now, Wells Fargo transfer partners include the following:

4. You may need to wait to apply

If you’ve applied for another Wells Fargo card in the last six months, you’ll likely have to wait a little longer before applying for the Autograph Journey.

Wells Fargo states in its terms and conditions, “If you opened a Wells Fargo Credit Card account within the last six months, then you may not qualify to open an additional Wells Fargo Credit Card account. We may also limit how many open Wells Fargo Credit Card accounts you have.”

So if you want the new Autograph Journey, you should steer clear of applying for other cards from Wells Fargo for now. If you’re approved and use the card responsibly for six months or longer, you can consider adding additional Wells Fargo credit cards to your portfolio.

  • Citi ThankYou points are valuable because the program partners with 14 airlines and 3 hotel chains.
  • Citi's hotel partner programs are Choice Privileges, Wyndham Rewards, and Accor Live Limitless.
  • Other partners include JetBlue, Air France-KLM, Singapore Airlines, and Cathay Pacific.

Overview of Citi Points Transfer

Earning transferable points with rewards credit cards is one of the best strategies you can use to maximize returns on your spending. Programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards ® and Amex Membership Rewards are popular with award travelers, in part because their transfer partners include numerous domestic airlines and popular hotel chains.

The Citi ThankYou Rewards program is a bit of an underdog in this regard, with just one domestic carrier (JetBlue) among airline transfer options.

Benefits of Transferring Citi Points

Despite having few domestic airline options, you can still squeeze excellent value from the program — in fact, some of Citi's international airline transfer partners offer lucrative sweet spots that allow you to book award flights for far less than other frequent flyer programs charge.

In addition, the program added Choice Privileges, Wyndham Rewards, and most recently Accor Live Limitless (ALL) to its partner roster, marking the first hotel transfer options since Hilton left the program several years ago.

That's on top of the numerous other ways to use your rewards points, like booking travel directly through the Citi ThankYou Travel Portal or cashing in rewards for gift cards and merchandise. These options are available to any ThankYou Rewards cardholder, but to unlock the ability to transfer points to all of Citi's airline partners, you'll need to have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card (no longer available to new applicants) in your wallet.

Best Airline Transfer Partners

As with most transferable points programs, there are definitely some partners that are better than others. Depending on the partner and how you redeem your points, the value you get from your transfer can vary significantly.

Here's a look at the best Citi airline transfer partners.

Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles

It may seem strange that one of the best uses of Citi ThankYou points is transferring to a European airline that most people are likely never to fly. But the real value of Turkish Airlines miles lies in using the Miles & Smiles frequent flyer program to book award flights on its Star Alliance partners.

For example, the Miles & Smiles partner award chart requires only 10,500 Turkish miles for an economy-class flight anywhere within the US, including Hawaii, on Star Alliance partner United Airlines. If you booked the exact same flight through the United MileagePlus frequently flyer program, you'd pay 25,000 United miles.

Using the Miles & Smiles program does take a bit of patience as its online booking site can be hard to navigate, but cheap award prices like these can make it worth the extra effort.

Air France-KLM Flying Blue

Air France and KLM share the Flying Blue frequent flyer program, and one of the best uses of Flying Blue miles is its recurring promo rewards. Each month, Flying Blue publishes a list of routes with a 25 to 50% discount on mileage costs. This can be a great way to stretch the value of your ThankYou points.

Rates for a one-way economy flight from the US to Europe range from about 15,000 to 30,000 Flying Blue miles. The number of miles required varies quite a bit depending on the date and if the route is on a monthly promo award. Keep in mind Flying Blue adds more taxes and fees than other programs, so you'll have to weigh the savings in miles and the increased cash cost.

Because it's a transfer partner of all of the major transferable rewards currencies, Flying Blue is a great place to combine points balances from different programs.

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

Singapore Airlines is also a member of the Star Alliance, which means that you can use KrisFlyer miles to book travel on partner airlines like United, Air Canada, and Lufthansa.

In fact, using Singapore Airlines is also cheaper than using United's own miles for flights anywhere in the continental US to Hawaii. Singapore also has a non-alliance partnership with Alaska Airlines, and you can use as few as 11,500 KrisFlyer miles to get to Hawaii as well.

For luxury aficionados, Singapore Airlines also flies the ultra-premium Singapore Suites first class on certain routes. Singapore rarely opens up award seats in Suites Class to partner airlines, so transferring to KrisFlyer is often the only way to book these bucket-list awards.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Although Virgin Atlantic is headquartered in the UK, its mileage program offers a fair amount of value for US travelers. You'll often get the best deal from Virgin Atlantic miles when you book award flights on its SkyTeam partners, like Delta.

Because Delta no longer publishes an award chart, the cost of a flight in Delta SkyMiles can vary wildly depending on the route, date, and number of stops. Before you book an award flight using your Delta miles, it pays to check with Virgin Atlantic. It is quite common that the exact same Delta flight will cost fewer miles if you book with Flying Club miles.

Avianca LifeMiles

Avianca is also a member of the Star Alliance, which means that you can use its miles to book partners like United, Lufthansa, and Ethiopian Airlines. Avianca's award chart divides the US into three separate regions, with flights within a region requiring only 7,500 Avianca Lifemiles to book. Some US airline frequent flyer programs would charge 12,500 miles or more for the exact same flights.

Avianca also offers regular promotions that offer huge (150% or more) bonuses on buying or transferring LifeMiles. This can make it easy to top off your balance if you just need a few more miles to book your next trip.

Good Citi Airline Transfer Partners

Some Citi airline transfer partners can provide decent value, but only in certain situations.

Etihad Guest

Etihad is not a member of any airline alliance but has a number of non-alliance partnerships that can provide good value for your Citi ThankYou points. These include Czech Airways (Prague to Seoul in business class for 25,610 Etihad Guest miles) and Royal Air Maroc (New York-JFK to Casablanca for 22,000 miles in economy or 44,000 miles in business class).

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

Cathay Pacific is a member of the Oneworld alliance and has a distance-based award chart. The number of miles you need will depend on whether you are flying only Cathay Pacific or if you are flying one of its Oneworld partners, like American Airlines or British Airways. A flight from Los Angeles to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific is only 27,000 miles in economy or 84,000 miles in business class.

Qantas Frequent Flyer

Like Cathay Pacific, Qantas is also a member of the Oneworld alliance and also has a distance-based award chart. The best value for using Qantas miles is on short flights under 600 flown miles on either Qantas or Oneworld partners like American Airlines. These short flights can be had for only 8,000 Qantas miles.

JetBlue TrueBlue

The number of points required for a JetBlue award flight is directly tied to the cash price of a ticket, so it's hard to get outsized value from your TrueBlue points. Still, it is possible to save points by transferring your Citi ThankYou points to JetBlue instead of using them directly to book a paid flight through the Citi portal.

Remember that JetBlue is the only Citi airline transfer partner that you can use without having the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card (though at a lesser ratio of 1,000 ThankYou points to 800 JetBlue points).

Citi Airline Transfer Partners That Aren't Great Value

The rest of the Citi ThankYou airline transfer partners are generally not worth considering, except for extremely niche redemptions.

Aeromexico Club Premier

Aeromexico uses kilometers instead of miles, so its award chart is generally inflated by 1.6x compared to other programs. While other bank program points, such as Amex Membership Rewards , transfer to Aeromexico at a rate of 1:1.6, Citi transfers at only 1:1.

Eva Air Infinity MileageLands

The award chart for Eva Air Infinity MileageLands is not spectacular when compared to most other airline programs, and you'll generally find better value elsewhere. Eva Air does have some generous stopover allowances, though you can't book stopovers online — instead, you'll need to call the airline directly.

Emirates Skywards

While Emirates first-class cabins are among the best in the world, it's best to use partner miles to book these awards. While Emirates recently reduced the astronomical fuel surcharges they charge on Skywards award tickets, there are other mileage programs that offer better value.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club

Like fellow Gulf carrier Emirates, Qatar has a great premium cabin flight experience that is best booked with partner miles. In Qatar's case, rather than transferring Citi ThankYou points to Qatar Airways Privilege Club, it's better to use American Airlines AAdvantage miles to fly on Qatar Airways.

Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus

Thai Airways is currently in the middle of bankruptcy, spurred on at least in part by the limited travel demand due to the pandemic. And while bankruptcy does not mean that your Royal Orchid Plus miles would all of a sudden become worthless, it does give you one more reason to avoid transferring your ThankYou points here.

Hotel Partners

It's possible to get decent value from Citi's hotel partners, Choice, Wyndham, and Accor, but because many of their brands are budget-friendly, you might be better off saving your points and paying cash instead. It's also possible to redeem Citi ThankYou points at a rate of 1 cent apiece for stays at these chains by booking through the Citi Travel Portal.

Accor Live Limitless (ALL)

Citi's newest transfer partner is Accor Live Limitless (ALL), which comprises 45 brands across over 5,000 properties worldwide. Accor hotels include Fairmont, Raffles, Sofitel, SLS, and Swisshotel, but most of its properties are located outside the US, making this a better deal for international travelers.

This transfer option is only available to Citi Premier and Prestige cardholders, with a transfer ratio of 2:1 (2 Citi points equals 1 Accor point). Accor doesn't have an award chart; instead, you can redeem points in 2,000-point increments toward a stay discount, where 2,000 points equal 40 euros off your bill. That makes Accor points worth just over 2 cents each, but since there's a 2:1 transfer ratio from Citi, you'll only get a value of just over 1 cent per Citi point (depending on the current exchange rate).

Choice Privileges

The loyalty program of Choice Hotels, Choice Privileges includes brands like Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, Clarion, Cambria, and Ascend Collection hotels. Award prices start at 8,000 points per night and go up to 35,000 points per night, with a few exceptions. Rates also vary depending on the season and even the day of the week you stay.

If you have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card, the transfer ratio is 1:2 (1 ThankYou point equals 2 Choice points), with transfers in 1,000-point increments. The no-annual-fee Citi Rewards+® Card and Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card have a transfer ratio of 1:1.5 (1 ThankYou points equals 1.5 Choice points), with transfers also in 1,000-point increments. And if you have the Citi® Double Cash Card , you also have the ability to transfer to Choice at a 1:1.5 ratio.

Wyndham Rewards

Wyndham Rewards includes familiar brands like Super 8, Days Inn, Howard Johnson, and Travelodge — as well as over 40,000 vacation rentals through its partnership with Vacasa.

With the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card, you'll get a 1:1 transfer ratio to Wyndham. Otherwise, with the Citi Rewards+® Card, Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card, and Citi® Double Cash Card, the ratio is 5:4 (1,000 Citi ThankYou points = 800 Wyndham points).

Wyndham's award structure is simple — you'll pay 7,500, 15,000, or 30,000 points for an award night, depending on the property. With Vacasa vacation rentals, you'll pay these fixed points rates per listed bedroom.

Other Rewards Programs

In addition to airline and hotel transfer partners, Citi ThankYou has one retail transfer partner.

Sears Shop Your Way

You can transfer your Citi ThankYou points to Sears Shop Your Way points at a rate of 1:10. Shop Your Way points are worth 0.1 cents each, and Sears does sell some third-party gift cards that you can buy with Shop Your Way points.

This would allow you to effectively redeem your Citi ThankYou points for 1 cent per point for gift cards (or other merchandise) available for purchase at Sears. Unless you already have Sears Shop Your Way points and need to top off your account for a redemption, it's easier to redeem Citi ThankYou points directly for gift cards through the ThankYou portal.

Transferring your Citi ThankYou points is a fairly straightforward process. Once you log into your account at thankyou.com, find "More Ways To Redeem" in the top header, then choose "Points Transfer." Or, select "Transfer & Share" in the main menu under "See everything that can be done with ThankYou Points."

After you've selected "Points Transfer," you'll then see a list of Citi transfer partner options available to you. It's important to note that the first and last names on your ThankYou account and the account you're transferring to must match in order to be able to transfer.

If you're looking for an all-purpose travel credit card with strong rewards, many ways to use your points, and an annual fee under $100, the Citi Premier should be on your shortlist. Beyond the welcome bonus offer, the Citi Premier® Card offers great 3x earning categories that just about anyone can take advantage of — and the rewards it earns are incredibly flexible.

For most of these partners, the transfer ratio is 1:1, with transfers in 1,000-point increments. The only exception for Citi Premier and Prestige cardholders is Accor (2:1). For other cardholders, JetBlue, Choice, and Wyndham, which are the only transfer partners available (along with Sears Shop Your Way rewards) if you don't have a Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card have transfer ratios and availability that vary depending on the card you have.

It's important to note that ThankYou points transfers are one-way and nonrefundable — once you move ThankYou points to a partner, you can not transfer them back to ThankYou Rewards.

How to Earn Citi ThankYou points

You can earn Citi ThankYou points through welcome bonuses and spending on a variety of different Citi credit cards , including:

Remember, you can only access all of Citi's transfer partners if you have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card. If you have multiple Citi ThankYou credit cards, you can combine your points into one ThankYou account.

Citi points can be transferred to a variety of airline and hotel partners, but not all airlines or hotels are partners. It's important to check the current list of Citi transfer partners for available options.

Transfer times vary by partner. While some transfers are instant, others may take several days to process. It's advisable to plan ahead if you need to use transferred points for specific bookings.

Once transferred, points are subject to the expiration policies of the partner program. This means they could expire if not used within the timeframe set by the partner.

Generally, there are no fees for transferring points from Citi to its partners, but it's always best to confirm any potential costs directly with Citi before making a transfer.

The best use of transferred points varies depending on personal travel preferences, the specific transfer partner, and the value of flights or hotel stays. Comparing redemption options can help maximize value.
