Thailand has added Indian citizens to their visa exemption policy for a temporary period, along with certain other nationalities.

Indians do not need a visa to enter Thailand until May 10, 2024 . After this date, standard visa requirements will return, unless otherwise specified.

Thailand’s standard visa policy for Indians

There are different types of visas available . The type of visa an Indian traveler should get depends on the reason for travel . For example, tourist visas are required for vacations, while business visas are required for business trips.

An Indian passport holder can usually complete an online application for the Thailand electronic visa on arrival (eVOA) for tourism purposes. This option has been suspended for Indians while the visa-exemption is in place.

Why do Indians need a Thailand visa on arrival?

Outside the temporary exemption period,  Indian passport holders must have a Thailand visa to enter the country, according to the country’s visa policy. The electronic visa on arrival (eVOA) is largely regarded as the best way to obtain one .

By pre-registering for an electronic Thailand visa on arrival online before traveling, this saves time by avoiding filling out paperwork at the border.

The simple online system is also far quicker and more convenient than going in person to an embassy to fill out forms and submit documentation.

For these reasons, the Thai eVOA is recommended for Indian citizens.

What Is a Thailand Visa on Arrival for Indian Citizens?

The online Thailand visa on arrival for Indian citizens is a travel permit obtained electronically . It simplifies the process of getting a visa to enter the country.

Also referred to as the “Thailand eVisa”, the eVOA allows Indian nationals to travel to Thailand on holiday or transit through the country .

Nationals of India can get their Thailand visa by filling out a short online form with their personal and passport details before traveling to Thailand. Most applications are processed within 1 to 5 days . Indian travelers get their electronic visa delivered directly to their email inbox.

How long can I stay in Thailand with the eVisa?

An approved Thailand visa on arrival grants an Indian passport holder a stay of 15 days in its territory.

It is not possible to extend the Thailand visa on arrival.

The validity period of the Thai online electronic visa is 15 days from the date of issue. Therefore, Indian travelers with an approved Thailand eVisa should enter the country within 1 month from getting the visa.

Note: The Thai eVOA is a single entry visa . It can be used for one trip.

How to Apply for a Thailand Visa from India?

When the eVOA service resumes for Indians, they can complete the simple Thailand eVisa application online. Filling out the form takes just a few minutes.

Indian applicants will need to provide some basic personal information on the application, including the following:

  • Date and place of birth
  • Nationality

They will also need to provide the following information from a valid Indian passport, as well as their contact details :

  • Passport number, issuing and expiry date
  • Telephone number
  • Email address

The third step involves providing details of the Indian national’s planned trip to Thailand, including the following travel information :

  • Dates of arrival and departure
  • Port of arrival
  • Accommodation in Thailand

The application for the Thailand online visa on arrival for Indian citizens can be done up to 24 hours prior to the intended entry date. However, it is advisable to submit it at least 5  days before traveling .

Thailand marks visa exemption for Indian tourists with special airport welcome

Effective from 10 november 2023 to 10 may 2024, holders of indian passports or travel documents will be granted a temporary visa exemption for a 30-day stay for the purpose of tourism in thailand..

Photo of TAT Newsroom

Bangkok, 10 November 2023 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) arranged a special welcome at Suvarnabhumi Airport for IndiGo Flight 6E 1639 from New Delhi, India, on which holders of Indian passports or travel documents travelling to Thailand for the purpose of tourism will be granted a temporary visa exemption for a 30-day stay.

Hosting the airport welcome ceremony, Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said “This special airport event symbolises Thailand’s invitation to Indian tourists to take advantage of the tourist visa exemption during the six-month period. The event reflects the Thai government’s commitment to ease visa and immigration procedures for foreign tourists, especially during this high season.”

Also joining Ms. Thapanee at the event included H.E. Mr. Nagesh Singh, Ambassador of India to Thailand, and Mr. Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Asia and the South Pacific.

From 10 November 2023 until 10 May 2024, Thailand is extending a temporary visa exemption for a 30-day stay for the purpose of tourism in Thailand for Indian tourists. This followed the similar short-term stimulus visa schemes for Chinese and Russian tourists.

India is one of Thailand’s top 10 source markets. In the first 10 months of this year, statistics showed a total of 1,302,483 Indian tourists, an increase of 86% when compared to the same period in 2022.

With the visa exemption scheme, TAT expects Thailand to see 1.6 million Indian tourists in 2023, generating about 65.6 billion Baht in revenue.

Indian tourists to Thailand stay on average 7-8 days with daily spending of around 5,500 Baht per person. As well as the millennials and families, Thailand also see affluent Indian travellers in the wedding, golf, and incentive segments.

Mr. Chattan said “TAT will leverage the short-term visa exemption and strengthen partnerships with local tourism operators to arrange joint sale promotions for different market groups, including leisure, women, seniors, and golf.”

Thai tourism businesses will be invited to join the TAT’s participation at two major trade shows in India in 2024, including the Outbound Travel Market (OTM) in Mumbai on 8-10 February and the South Asia’s Travel and Tourism Exchange (SATTE) in New Delhi on 22-24 February.

In addition, TAT is increasing the promotion of Thailand’s direction towards high value and sustainability in the Indian market by raising awareness on a multitude of meaningful travel experiences that reflect the Thai soft powers and sustainable goals. Special promotion schemes will be arranged specially for the corporate, incentive, and wedding segments.

The government of Thailand finally announced a visa-waiver scheme for Indian passport holders. Starting November 10, 2023, Indian nationals can visit Thailand for 30 days, without a visa. This waiver will be in place for six months, up to May 10, 2024.

What Visa-Free Entry Means

What visa-free entry means is, if you have an Indian passport, after arrival at a Thai airport, you can go straight to immigration. You don’t have to go to the visa on arrival counter, or any visa counter for that matter. If you are arriving within the specified dates, you don’t need a Thailand visa.

This visa exemption is significant for two reasons: One, it increases the period of stay to 30 days, which was 15 days under the visa on arrival scheme. And two, it results in a direct saving of the visa fee, which was a minimum of 2000 Baht, and 2200 Baht if someone opted for the fast track visa.

Visa-Free Entry Rules and Requirements

Visa-free travel does not mean there are no rules or formalities left to comply with. When you go to the immigration counter for the entry stamp, there will be a set of rules and requirements to follow, as under:

1. Passport with a remaining validity of six months, and two blank pages.

2. Boarding card of the arrival flight

3. Confirmed return or onward journey air ticket

4. Confirmed hotel bookings for the entire period of stay in Thailand

5. Proof of funds

6. The purpose of the visit must be tourism only.

Let us see these requirements in detail:

1. Passport

Your passport should have a minimum remaining validity of six months on the day of your arrival in Thailand. The passport should also have at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.

2. Boarding Card

The boarding card of the flight on which you arrive in Thailand is an important document which shows the details of your inward travel, and is examined by the immigration officer. Keep your boarding card safe, and present it when asked for.

3. Return Air Ticket

You need to have a confirmed return or onward journey air ticket for travel within 30 days, including the dates of arrival and exit. A plan to exit Thailand via a land crossing may not be accepted. Carry a printed copy.

4. Confirmed Hotel Bookings

Confirmed and verifiable hotel bookings are needed for the entire period of stay in Thailand. Carry printed copies of all hotel confirmation vouchers or emails.

Any special proof of funds requirement for travel under the visa-waiver scheme as not been announced. However, going by the funds requirement specified for the other countries which enjoy visa-exemption in Thailand, you need to have at least 10,000 Baht per person and 20,000 Baht per family.

The proof of funds, if demanded, has to be shown in cash only. It can be either in Thai Baht, or USD, or another popular currency. If you are planning to stay longer than 15 days, you may like to carry some extra money.

6. Purpose of Visit

The purpose of your visit has to be tourism only. Any type of employment in Thailand is prohibited on tourist visa.

YouTube Video

I have posted a YouTube video on this visa-free travel scheme. You may watch it at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnGYiwdVOOg

This will be the first experience of visa-free travel to Thailand for Indian passport holders, and it is not clear how strict the Thai immigration officers will be. Whether they will add a document verification step before the immigration counter is also not known, though it is a possibility.

I will be traveling to Thailand under this visa-free scheme in December 2023, and will report any additional information based on my own experience. Expect this article to be updated soon.

Thank you for reading. For any more information, clarification, or feedback, please write a comment below. I will be happy to respond.

Hi, do you know if visa free is applicable for multiple entry

Hi Yes, the visa-free policy allows multiple entry for travel by air, as long the policy is in force. However, if you plan to enter via a land-border, then perhaps entry is allowed only twice per year.

How was it sir? I am traveling to Thailand early next week and was wondering as an Indian passport holder. Thank you

Hi Zaheer. I have traveled in December 2023 under this scheme, and just had to pass through immigration. It was quick, took just two minuted at the immigration counter. So, after landing, go straight to immigration. My YouTube video on this subject has all the details: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84iZ-Y8zJAs

Weather and best time to visit Thailand: Pack your bags right!

Now that you know everything about Thailand visas, visa fees, required documents, and the online application process, let’s understand what an Indian visitor should take in their bags to travel to Thailand during different seasons of the year .

The weather is tropical , with a dry season, summer, and a rainy season. But no matter what month of the year, the temperatures are usually between 84ºF and 97ºF .

The best time to visit Thailand is the dry season , which starts in November and goes until April . Summer ( March to May ), it's hot and the humidity index rises considerably. If traveling in these months, be sure you don’t forget to take hats, sunscreen, and summer clothes , with fabrics like cotton, and just some coats for milder days.

During the rainy season ( June to October ), the sensation of heat can seem much higher thanks to the humidity levels that in this period are around 80%. So you must pack summer clothes too, but also raincoats .

Places you must visit in Thailand

The country offers beautiful landscapes and it’s a dream destination for enjoying holidays. To help you to plan the travel itinerary , we spotlight some amazing places.

Maybe you have some doubts about the COVID protocols for tourists in Thailand entry (vaccines, tests requirements, quarantine). Click here to read about what the Thai government requires for travelers visiting the country during the COVID-19 pandemic.

You'll probably arrive in the country in the capital. It’s a big city, very urban, modern, and cultural, so it is worth the visit. Your itinerary should include the Royal Palace, and the Buddhist temples, such as Wat Pho, the temple of the reclining Buddha. The Train and Floating markets, which are a little further away from the Center, also offer a fantastic experience. And to enjoy the food, go to Khao San Road, the famous street full of exotic foods.

Koh Phi Phi

Here are the most famous beaches of Thailand, including the scenario from The Beach movie, Maya Bay (reopened for tourists in 2022). The Koh Phi Phi’s islands receive thousands of tourists each year, but the landscapes are memorable. You can do everything by walking or using boats.

This city has preserved nature, cultural activities, and a peaceful spirit. The Buddhist temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is the symbol of Chiang Mai and attracts visitors all year. Take time to visit the well-preserved parks, full of mountains, waterfalls, and perfect rivers for rafting.

Kanchanaburi

The city is best known for its dark connection to WWII, especially the construction of the bridge over the River Kwai. But, besides the war museums, the place offers incredible natural landscapes. An example of that is the Erawan Falls, a seven-tier waterfall and emerald green ponds hidden in the thick rainforest.

Do you still have doubts?

People travel to find the exotic. Many westerners consider India to be exotic. So what do Indians find exotic?

As travel restrictions ease across the world, thousands of Indians are leaving India to enjoy the tropical weather, sunny beaches, and exquisite cuisine of Thailand. The exotic.

Thailand has recently announced new changes to its Thailand Pass system which will make entry to Thailand even easier. These changes take effect on June 1.

Indian citizens are lucky because they can enter Thailand for a holiday under Thailand’s Visa on Arrival scheme. Indian travelers can spend 15 days in Thailand without needing to apply for a visa beforehand. You can get a Visa on Arrival at the airport of arrival in Thailand.

If they want to spend longer on the islands, trekking through the jungle, and enjoying amazing street food, they are welcome to apply for a longer tourist visa at the local Thailand Embassy.

No matter how long you intend to stay in Thailand, there are a few things to be aware of when you plan your holiday.

Thailand is welcoming Indian travelers back to its shores, but they still need to protect their people and visitors alike. To help keep everyone safe, the Thai government introduced an online system called Thailand Pass.

What is Thailand Pass?

Thailand Pass is a free online registration system where Indians who travel to Thailand can provide some basic health information and be approved to visit the country. It confirms the vaccination status of travelers arriving in Thailand and ensures they have the necessary protection in case they are diagnosed with COVID while here.

You will be pleased to know there were big changes to the Thai Pass system from June 1st, 2022.

  • Thai Pass approvals are now instant on submission.
  • All mandatory quarantine periods have been removed.
  • Unvaccinated travelers now have the option of completing an RT-PCR test or the faster Professional Antigen Test (Pro-ATK).

Let’s break down how Thailand Pass works so Indian travelers can plan their holidays.

Getting to Thailand

There are two ways an Indian visitor can register their entry to Thailand in Thailand Pass; by Air or by Land (through Malaysia/Laos).

Air entry is for those who will be arriving on a flight through an international airport.

Land entry is for visitors who are currently in a country that borders Thailand and seek to enter the country through a land border.

Vaccination Status

Thailand welcomes Indian travelers no matter their state of vaccination. They have eased their travel restrictions and try to make it easy for people to visit while keeping them safe.

Your vaccination status will determine what you need to provide when applying for a Thailand Pass.

Within the Thailand Pass system, Indian citizens will fall into one of two categories when they choose how to apply.

  • Unvaccinated

The paperwork and process are a little different for each category, so have a close read to work out which works best for you.

Thailand Pass Requirements

Vaccinated: Indians who are fully vaccinated no longer need to complete any mandatory quarantine when they arrive.

They will apply for a Thailand Pass and upload the required documents for approval. Once they arrive, vaccinated Indian holidaymakers are free to travel and stay anywhere in Thailand.

The documents a vaccinated Indian citizen needs when applying for a Thailand Pass are:

  • Passport details
  • A flight itinerary
  • Travel insurance with COVID coverage
  • Vaccination certificate

Unvaccinated: Indian visitors who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated have the option of entering the country without the mandatory quarantine.

Travelers will need to complete an RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test within 72 hours before departure from India and before they apply for a Thailand Pass. The result needs to be uploaded to the application for approval.

Indians who choose this method will be free to travel anywhere in Thailand on arrival.

The documents needed for this method of entry are:

  • A pre-departure RT-PCR/Pro-ATK test result no older than 72 hours before traveling

Travel Insurance Requirement for Indian Travelers

Because foreign travelers are not eligible for free medical care in Thailand, the Thai government has included travel insurance with Covid cover as part of their entry requirements.

They understand no matter how hard we try to curb the spread of COVID, things can still go wrong and people can still test positive.

If a visitor tests positive for Covid, they need to quarantine or isolate until fully recovered. The standard of insurance cover ensures a foreign traveler is protected and can cover any medical costs or treatments that might accrue during their recovery.

To have your insurance approved in Thailand Pass, it must meet the following requirements:

  • A minimum cover of $10,000 USD for medical expenses and treatment.
  • It must specifically state that it covers COVID-related incidents.
  • It must remain valid for the entire length of your stay in Thailand.

If your policy meets these requirements, it will be approved. However, if you would like a policy that is flexible and designed specifically to meet the standards set by Thai authorities, check out the AXA Sawasdee Thailand policy. As a trusted insurer in Thailand, this policy is guaranteed to be approved.

Applying for your Thailand Pass

Now that you know what you need to apply for a Thailand Pass, let’s look at how you apply.

The first few steps are the same for every visitor.

  • Go to the Thailand Pass web portal: https://tp.consular.go.th/
  • Choose whether you will enter Thailand by Air or Land.

Now your vaccination and choice of entry scheme come into effect.

Vaccinated travelers:

  • Input your personal details. This will include your country of departure, arriving flight number, and address of where you will stay on your first night.
  • Upload your passport, flight itinerary, insurance policy, and vaccination certificate.
  • Submit and receive a confirmation email after registration
  • Check your email for the instant Thailand Pass approval.

Once approved, you will receive an email with your QR Entry Code and Thai Pass ID.

Unvaccinated travelers with RT-PCR test or Pro-ATK test:

  • Upload your passport, flight itinerary, insurance policy, and RT-PCR/Pro-ATK test result.

Checking your Thailand Pass Status

“How do I know if my Thailand Pass has been approved?!”

We get asked this a lot, so it’s worth covering.

When you hit submit on your application, you will receive an email confirmation. You should then receive your approval and Thai Pass QR code in a second email. If you do not receive your QR code within an hour, you can check the status of your application at: https://tp.consular.go.th/en/check-status

You will need your:

  • Access code
  • Passport Number
  • Email address

Thailand Pass for Children

Family is important for Indians. Introducing children to foreign cultures helps them understand not only the world but also their own culture.

Kids can be a handful at home. Trying to travel to another country with health restrictions can be daunting, so Thailand Pass tries to make its entry as simple as possible. This is how Thailand Pass works for kids.

  • Children under the age of 18 can be added to a parent’s application. They do not need a separate application. Once the Thailand Pass is approved, the parent and the child will receive their own QR code.
  • Children under 18 will need to be covered by insurance. They can have their own policy or be included in a family policy. If you are getting a family policy, make sure all names are clearly stated.
  • Children enter the country under the same scheme as their parents. If you are vaccinated and don’t need a test, your child does not need one. If you are doing an RT-PCR test, your child will complete a test as well.

That’s it! Visiting Thailand with your children is simple if done right.

Now you know how to complete your Thailand Pass application and have it approved.

It’s time to leave the exotic and discover the exotic. Long, warm beaches and Thai food are waiting for you.

Do Indian Citizens Need a Visa for Thailand?

Thailand Pass is not a visa or a permit to stay in Thailand. It is a permit to enter Thailand during the pandemic.

As mentioned above, Indian citizens may enter Thailand without a visa. They can enter under the Visa On Arrival program . Under the VOA program, Indian citizens may stay up to 15 days in Thailand. This 15-day permit can be issued at the airport of arrival for a fee of 2,000 THB and filling out the TM88 application form.

For Indian travelers who wish to stay in Thailand longer than 15 days or are entering Thailand for a different purpose other than tourism, they are required to apply for a proper Thai visa. They may apply one of the following visas:

  • Tourist Visa (TR visa) for tourists who can stay up to 60 days
  • Non-Immigrant B Visa for business or employment purposes
  • Non-Immigrant O visa for Indian citizens married to a Thai or a parent of a Thai national
  • Non-Immigrant O visa for retirees
  • Non-Immigrant OA visa for retirees
  • Non-Immigrant ED visa for students

To apply for a Thai visa, Indian citizens may visit: https://newdelhi.thaiembassy.org/

Talking about visa for Thailand from India, the process is undertaken by VFS centres.

Thailand Sticker Visa

The documents requirements are rather elaborate and make the process a lot more difficult than a visa on arrival but it is significantly cheaper than visa on arrival and offers a longer stay period. In this blog, I will provide an in depth step by step procedure guide for getting a Thailand Sticker Visa –

Documents Required

You have to be extremely careful while preparing documents for visa application. Even minor mistakes can lead to enquiry request or even rejection. Here’s a detailed list of documents that are required for your Thailand Tourist Visa –

1. Passport with validity no less than 6 Months and Two Blank Pages

2. Visa Application Form Duly Filled – Please note that Delhi Embassy has different form than other consulates in Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai etc. Download the relevant one from this link https://visa.vfsglobal.com/one-pager/thailand/india/english/

3. Two Colour Photographs – 3.5cms x 4.5cms, with white background, without glasses and without covered head

4. Confirmed Air Tickets (Colour Printouts) – To Thailand and From Thailand – Travel website bookings such as easemytrip, happy easy go or any other would not be accepted. Also Email Confirmation Printouts are not accepted. Only original Airline Booking Itinerary downloaded from airlines website is accepted and is mandatory.

5. Accommodation Proof (Colour Printouts) – Prepaid Travel Bookings are mandatory. Pay at Hotel Bookings are not accepted. If you’re willing to stay with Thai Friends or Relatives, must provide an invitation letter and Thai ID card from them. And if they are not Thai Nationals then their work permit or visa is required.

6. Bank Statement – Last Six Months Transactions on Original Bank Passbook Photocopy or Print Out of Bank Statement Downloaded From Net Banking. You have to visit your bank to get the printout or photocopy stamped and attested by your bank. Statements are not accepted without attestation. Your account should reflect a minimum of 700 USD equivalent amount in rupees. The last transaction of this bank statement should not be older than 5 days than the date of visa application.

7. Health Insurance – A valid health insurance with minimum cover of USD 20,000 and coverage of Covid 19. You can book the same online from policybazaar.com .

8. Income Tax Registration, Pay Slips, Employment ID, Student ID, Business License – This category is not mandatory but it is very much advisable. At least, you should attach your ITR and some kind of ID depending on your scenario, whatever is applicable on you.

You do not need to book any appointment for Thailand Visa at any of the VFS centres. Thai Visa Applications can simply be made via Walk In. Just make sure all your documents are as required and preferably carry cash as sometime their card machines do not work and you’ll have to go outside to withdraw cash. The risk is not worth it.

Cost, Validity, Duration & Entries

Single Entry Visa – INR 2500 – Validity 3 Months – Stay – 60 Days Stay.

Multiple Entry Visa – INR 1200 – Validity 6 Months – Stay – 60 Days Per Entry.

VFS Processing Fee – INR 500

Processing Time

Submission Timings  are from 09:00 AM to 02:00 PM

Processing Time –  4 working days

The travel date should at least be seven working days away from date of application. There’s a chance of further verification enquiry to be placed on your visa application which can further extend the processing time.

Passport Collection Timings: –  Monday to Friday 03:00 PM To 04:30 PM

Weekly off: –  Saturday and Sunday

thai tourist visa for indian passport holders

A normal visa on arrival costs 2500 THB around 5000 Rupees and offers a stay of 15 days for single entry. In contrast, this sticker visa costs INR 3000 Rupees and offers a stay of 60 days and you also do not have to wait in long queues. If you have the time and patience, required documents and live in close proximity with one of VFS centres. Then, sticker visa definitely makes more sense.

An opportune moment for Indian passport holders

  • To boost tourism and attract more Indian visitors, Thailand, last year, declared a visa-free entry policy for Indian citizens starting from November 10, 2023, to May 10, 2024.
  • Therefore, if you are planning a trip before May this year, you can enjoy a hassle-free entry into the country with a maximum permitted stay of 30 days.
  • This step appears to have worked in favour of the Southeast Asian country as it has witnessed a 321 per cent increase in travel searches year-over-year since the announcement was made.
  • India is a crucial source market for Thailand's tourism industry; it ranks fourth after Malaysia, China, and Singapore, as of 2023.
  • To top it all, the Thailand government has targeted 3.5 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2024, aiming for increased tourism receipts from Indian visitors, which totalled 1.62 million last year.

A 10-day itinerary

This is what a standard 10-day Thailand itinerary looks like.

Unless the current visa free entry arrangement is extended you will need a tourist visa.

thai tourist visa for indian passport holders

The current visa free entry for India nationals ends on 10 May 2024 and there have been no rumors or mentions of extending it. But May is a long way off and government policies here can change on a dime. Just keep an eye on the situation.
