10 Chill Weekend Road Trips From Jacksonville, Florida

Posted by Kristen Arendt May 27, 2022 Updated January 17, 2023

Looking to escape the hustle of Florida’s most populous city?

These 10 weekend road trips from Jacksonville will give you a change of scenery — whether you want to trade one cityscape for another or escape into the solitude of Florida’s natural landscapes.

Jax, as it’s known by the locals, is centrally located on northern Florida’s Atlantic Coast.

And while there’s plenty to see and do in the city itself, if you’re looking for a few weekend road trips to get out of town and see the Florida sights, these ten spots have lots to offer whether you’re looking for a beach day, an evening on the town or a chance to get into the wild corners of the state.

1. Saint Augustine

saint Augustine florida

The historic town of Saint Augustine offers a full weekend’s worth of activities whether you love shopping, dining, sightseeing, or getting out on the beach. The town boasts unique attractions, too. Notably, Ponce De Leon’s Fountain of Youth and Ripley’s Believe It or Not! are two stops for a memorable afternoon.

Originally founded in 1565, Saint Augustine holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European and African-American origin in the United States. The town’s historic roots are on display with the quaint architecture and brick-lined streets as well as at the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument , the oldest masonry fortification in the continental U.S.

Plus, with 42 miles of beach to explore, you can easily get some time on the Atlantic. Head across the Vilano Bridge to hit up the popular spots along Vilano Beach. Or drive south of downtown to Anastasia Island for a stop off at Anastasia State Park for a beautiful stroll along the ocean in an undeveloped natural setting.

2. Guana River Wildlife Management Area

Guana River Wildlife Management Area florida

If you’re looking to escape the bustle of the big city, a trip to the Guana River Wildlife Management Area (WMA) offers a chance to explore Florida’s salt marshes, maritime hammocks, and pine flatwoods. Located just south of Jacksonville along the coast, this 9,815-acre conservation area protects a unique maritime ecosystem and is home to a variety of fish and wildlife.

Depending on how you want to explore the WMA, you can opt to head out hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, bird watching, hiking, biking, paddling, boating, or horseback riding. Among the many lakes and marshes, you might spot wildlife such as gopher tortoises, wood storks, and little blue herons. The preserve is also designated as a Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail site, offering the chance to spot many species of waterfowl and wading birds.

3. Ormond Beach

Ormond Beach florida

Looking for a family-friendly beach weekend road trip? Ormond Beach is an easy drive from Jax and offers the chance to explore some scenic Atlantic coastline without all the crowds of nearby Daytona Beach. Though it can still get crowded during peak season (skip spring break weeks if you don’t want to fight for a spot on the sand), Ormond does have a smaller-town feel while still providing miles of scenic coastline.

The Ormond Beach MainStreet district running along Granada Boulevard offers you plenty of dining and retail options. The 1.8-mile district is home to more than 150 businesses, including restaurants, stores, and specialty shops.

And when you’re ready for some sun and surf, head out to the white sand beaches at Ormond Beach and Ormond by the Sea. Ormond’s beaches are broad and flat, and as you get away from downtown there are fewer high-rise buildings and crowds, making for a slightly more peaceful setting for walking or sunbathing. If you’re an early bird, get on the road early to catch a sunrise over the Atlantic.

4. Little Talbot Island State Park

Little Talbot Island State Park

For an escape to a natural stretch of beach close to Jacksonville, you can’t beat a weekend trip to Little Talbot Island State Park . One of only a handful of undeveloped barrier islands remaining in northeast Florida, the state park has five miles of beaches and three miles of hiking and biking trails, making it a great weekend outing whether you want to walk, cycle, paddle or simply play in the surf.

Once at the state park, you can head out beachcombing, surfing, fishing, hiking, birdwatching, or kayaking. Though the white sand beaches are definitely a draw, the bluffs and hammocks of the island make for a beautiful backdrop that provides a more “back to nature” feel than some of Florida’s other white sand beaches.

And should you want to make an overnight stop, the state park also has a 36-site campground tucked among the dunes. Sites have electricity, freshwater, a fire ring, and a picnic table, and the campground offers two bathhouses with hot showers, so you can easily rinse off after a day out playing on the beach.

5. Gainesville

Gainesville Florida

You may not want to spend every weekend on the ocean (especially around the notoriously crowded spring break season), so if you’re hankering for a change of scenery, head inland to Gainesville . This vibrant college town offers plenty of fun, inexpensive attractions, many of which are family-friendly if you’re looking for things to do with the kiddos.

One popular option is a trip to the Florida Museum of Natural History —budding naturalists, young or old, will love a stop off at the Butterfly Rainforest exhibit which is home to hundreds of free-flying butterflies and birds. Other unique nature-focused spots include the 68-acre Kanapaha Botanical Gardens and Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park , which features a sinkhole that is home to a miniature rainforest.

If finding a brewery is more in line with your idea of a weekend outing, Gainesville is home to several local microbreweries as well as a wide variety of downtown dining options if you want to grab a bite, too.

6. Blue Springs State Park

Blue Springs State Park

If the 72-degree, crystal-clear blue water wasn’t enough to entice you to visit Blue Springs State Park , add on the chance to see manatees as the icing on the cake for this weekend road trip. Blue Spring, a designated manatee refuge, is closed to water recreation from approximately mid-November through March to provide a safe refuge for the West Indian manatees who migrate to the spring for the warm waters.

The spring is located along the St. Johns River where you can enjoy year-round canoeing or kayaking (rentals are available at the park) or take a guided riverboat cruise. Other activities at the state park include birding, fishing, hiking, scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, and tubing. You can also pitch a tent or pull up your RV at the park’s campground. The 51 campsites are all within walking distance of Blue Spring.

7. Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island

Pop over to Georgia for a weekend trip to Jekyll Island . This island off the coast of Florida’s northern neighbor is the southernmost island of a string of barrier islands known as the Golden Isles. The 5,500-acre island is home to 10 miles of shoreline, including the iconic and popular Driftwood Beach.

When you’re not strolling the white sand beaches looking for seashells, you have plenty of other outdoorsy activities to choose from including hiking, biking, horseback riding, and fishing. Take a dolphin tour or visit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center to see some local wildlife.

In the small downtown area, you will find a variety of shops and restaurants as well as events, family-friendly activities, and attractions. Annual events range from art exhibitions to culinary festivals (the November Shrimp and Grits Festival is a fan favorite). Whether you want a quiet outing in nature or a festival-filled weekend, Jekyll Island has plenty to offer.

8. Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach florida

Known for its miles of wide, hard-packed sand beaches, Daytona Beach is a unique spot along the Florida coast. Though the inland side of the town has plenty to offer, if you’re making a weekend trip to the area, the beach is probably the primary draw.

Often referred to as the “World’s Most Famous Beach,” the 23-mile stretch of sand once hosted automobile and motorcycle races back in1902. Nowadays, several areas of the beach are designated for vehicle use so you can drive your car right onto the beach. Also home to the Daytona International Speedway , the city draws automotive enthusiasts and beach-goers alike.

For the kids (and kids at heart) the boardwalk offers rides and arcades, and the beachside Daytona Lagoon water park boasts go-karts, laser tag, and waterslides. And you have your choice of beachfront dining if a nice restaurant with an ocean view (and a tropical beverage) is how you’d like to end your day.

9. Ginnie Springs

Ginnie Springs

Seeking a magical escape away from the sand and surf? Head west and inland for a trip to Ginnie Springs where the delightful blue waters of the seven natural springs invite you to relax and explore. Located along the Santa Fe River, the springs hold steady at 72-degrees year-round making for fun swimming, snorkeling, or simply floating in a tube to soak in the scenery. For a more active outing, try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding.

Or to see the springs from a unique vantage point, you can explore the underwater world at three different dive sites—the Ginnie Ballroom, the Devil’s Spring System, and the Santa Fe River. Certified divers can rent gear at the full-service dive center at the Ginnie Springs Outdoors camp store. Should you want to spend the night, Ginnie Springs Outdoors also offers tent and RV sites as well as a cute cottage rental.

Or head to the historic downtown area for shops, restaurants, and more. The Fernandina Beach Historic District features colorful buildings and cool architecture, the perfect backdrop to check out the boutique shops or catch some live music at a local eatery.

15 Best Day Trips from Jacksonville, FL

Home to the beautiful St John’s River and the longest coastline of any city in the United States, Jacksonville is one of the most popular cities in the Sunshine State of Florida – and easily one of the most charming.

It’s also one of the most populated.

Between the countless urban parks, world class cuisine and thriving nightlife, there’s no shortage of excitement in this coastal river city.

Jacksonville also happens to be ideally located in terms of its proximity to the various neighbouring gems, including everything from national seashore beaches populated by wild horses to ancient natural springs.

With most of these prime destinations situated less than an hour away from the city, you’ll find that it’s easier than ever to enjoy Florida’s stunning attractions in the space of a day.

Here are 15 of the best day trips from Jacksonville.

1. Blue Springs State Park

Blue Springs State Park

Easily one of the most beautiful and popular stretches of the St John’s River, the waters of Blue Springs State Park span an impressive 2600-acres of pristine, unspoiled, tantalizing landscape.

A mere two hours from the hustle and bustle of Jacksonville, the springs are also home to West Indian manatees that are visible during manatee season and add to the gorgeous azure attraction of the warm waters.

As you’d expect, the summer months see many locals and visitors arriving to swim and kayak through Blue Springs and embark on guided ecological excursions throughout the area.

2. Ichetucknee Springs

Ichetucknee Springs

Only a couple of hours away from the bustling city, you’ll find one of Florida’s most beloved and popular natural attractions, the irresistible Ichetucknee Springs.

The gorgeous network of sun-dappled springs is a refreshing playground for children and adults alike, with countless people visiting each year to enjoy the crystal-clear waterways.

The most common pastime is swimming or tubing down the river, which is accessible to all thanks to the abundance of nearby stores selling affordable tubes.

Also on offer is cave diving, with the prime location being Blue Hole Spring, the largest of the springs in Ichetucknee.

3. Amelia Island

Amelia Island

A mere 30-miles away from Jacksonville lies the serenely beautiful Amelia Island – an Atlantic barrier island with sweeping white sand beaches and a lush, forested interior peppered with marshlands.

The urbanised area of the island offers intriguing art galleries, historic saloons and a decidedly laid back and charming small-town atmosphere.

Another highlight on Amelia Island is Fernandina Beach, an area nestled in the northeast corner of the island boasting a fine collection of pristine beaches, upmarket resorts and fantastic golfing opportunities.

Here, you’ll also find popular festivals ranging from music to foodie throughout the year.

Palatka, Florida

For a fascinating insight into a historic Floridian settlement, make the one hour journey to the traditional city of Palatka, where you’ll find a healthy dose of old town charm.

With perfectly preserved homes and churches dating back to the 1800’s, a visit to Palatka can feel like stepping back in time, not to mention offering an intriguing alternative to the streets of Jacksonville.

The thriving art scene both in galleries and on the street only adds to the vibrant and culturally rich atmosphere and is best enjoyed on an excursion like the Palatka Mural Tour.

For a nature outing, you can venture out to the Ravine Gardens State Park, home to two enormous ravines and an abundance of beautiful gardens.

Silver Glen Springs Recreation Area, Ocala

Another pristinely beautiful escape from metropolitan life comes in the form of the sun-drenched region of Ocala, boasting mile after mile of untouched natural reserve – the most attractive of which is the Ocala National Forest.

Here, you’ll find a mixture of enchanting glens flanked by weeping willows, and tranquil springs with clear waters.

Juniper Run and Silver Glen Springs are particularly popular for a refreshing dip in swimming holes and tubing routes, while the Silver Springs State Park offers land activities such as horseback riding.

Tampa, Florida

Situated on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, Tampa is one of Florida’s most well-travelled and exciting cities.

Thanks to its west coast location and year-round warm climate, Tampa is an excellent beach destination, home to popular spots like Clearwater Beach or the quieter, but even more gorgeous Indian Rocks Beach.

With fishing excursions galore, top-notch seafood restaurants, and a decidedly marine-oriented way of life, a day trip to Tampa will have you wishing for a life by the coast after a few hours.

7. Gainesville

Gainesville, Florida

The sizeable college town of Gainesville is not only a buzzing hub full of youthful charm, thanks to it being home to the University of Florida, it is also a hotbed of state parks and various natural attractions.

Venturing further afield, marvel at enormous sinkholes in Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park, amongst other naturally occurring phenomena.

8. St Augustine

St Augustine, Florida

To say St Augustine is a bucketlist Floridian destination would be an understatement, to say the least.

The oldest city in the United States – let alone Florida – is a delight for those with an interest in history, architecture, or simply just appreciate a gorgeous town.

The beautiful architecture is decidedly European, and it’s easy to spend hours wandering the cobblestone streets taking it all in.

The palm-lined, lamp-illuminated plazas are particularly pleasant to walk around in the evening.

If you’re in search of incredible views of the town, then climb to the top of the St Augustine Lighthouse, where you can see the historic city from up high in all its majesty.

9. Cedar Key

Cedar Key

Around three miles out into the Gulf of Mexico, you’ll find the positively minute but irresistibly cheerful fishing village of Cedar Key, known for its small size and laidback, friendly atmosphere.

Food is usually one of the most important aspects of a visit to Cedar Key, and the local shellfish are claimed to be among the sweetest and very best in the world.

Other than the world-class seafood, the key is a wonderful place to wander around in flip flops and unwind.

10. Ginnie Springs

Ginnie Springs, Florida

One of the lesser known springs near Jacksonville, but no less attractive, the Ginnie Springs are known for the clarity of their waters, making them particularly popular with snorkelers and divers.

Less than two hours from Jacksonville, Ginnie Springs offers better cave diving opportunities than its Floridian counterparts, thanks to the huge network of subterranean caverns under the surface that are captivating to explore by yourself or in a group.

The glittering bodies of water are also a delight to swim and tube in, offering a refreshing respite from the hot Florida sun.

11. White Springs

Big Shoals State Park

In less than an hour you could be unwinding in one of Florida’s smallest and most picturesque towns, surrounded by rugged natural beauty that offers a variety of activities.

A world away from busy Jacksonville, the sparsely populated town of White Springs is a welcome escape from city life and is full of antique shops, preserved historic homes and championing a laidback pace of life.

If, however, you want a more active visit, you’ll find the thrilling Big Shoals State Park on your doorstep, where you can tackle world class whitewater rapids.

For a happy medium between the two, you can enjoy countless leisurely hikes along the trails found at the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park.

12. Ponce Inlet

Ponce Inlet

A quaint coastal community that is also home to the tallest lighthouse in the state, Ponce Inlet is an excellent day trip for families and travellers looking for a quieter alternative to nearby Daytona Beach and the crowds associated with it.

The attractive, crowd-free beaches here offer incredible waves to surf and miles of shell-strewn beach to wander along.

Of course, the highlight is the view from the top of the 203-step lighthouse, from which the panoramic vistas will not disappoint.

13. Cumberland Island

Marsh on Cumberland Island, Georgia

Given its southern position in the state, Jacksonville is, in fact, not very far from Georgia.

One of the closest attractions is the gorgeous and unique island of Cumberland.

Board a ferry at St Mary’s to get there, and be sure to bring your camera to capture snapshots of the local flora and fauna.

Cumberland Island’s most intriguing feature is the herds of wild horses roaming free along the sweeping beaches and tree-lined dirt roads.

Having lived here for generations, the horses are undomesticated and fascinating to observe in their beautiful home.

14. Daytona International Speedway

Daytona International Speedway

Home to one of the nation’s most beloved and exhilarating sports, the Daytona International Speedway is a thrill to visit on any day of the year, regardless of whether you get to see one of the huge events such as the Daytona 500. You’ll have the chance to walk along the track and check out some race-winning cars that are housed there.

For speedsters, there’s the chance to ride with a pro or even drive the car yourself on differently priced tours.

15. Big Talbot Island

Big Talbot Island

Only 20-miles east of Jacksonville, you’ll find the thriving, naturally abundant Big Talbot Island, one of the most ecologically diverse of the Floridian sea islands.

Discover marshlands populated by wild birds at Sarabay, or have a picnic at The Bluffs in one of the picturesque pavilions at the water’s edge.

One of the highlights is a visit to Boneyard Beach, which is famed for the abundance of sun-bleached, salt-washed tree skeletons populating the shore.

Also, in case you didn't already know, the signs remind you to not swim with alligators.

Geocaching at Wakulla Springs

Although this cool park has glass-bottom boat tours and hiking , you'll want to check out their geocaching treasure hunts. All you need is a GPS and you're good to start finding secret, hidden caches.

If you want to turn your day trip into a weekend trip,  stay at the historic Wakulla Springs Lodge .

Time from Jacksonville:  2 hours 50 minutes

See all the sights at Cumberland Island National Seashore

You'll need to take the ferry to see this barrier island. If you're interested in history you can check out the Seashore Museum or the spooky ruins of Dungeness mansion.

Check out a winery

Feel like "sampling" some vino? The Log Cabin Winery makes both red and white wines. In August they hold a festival where you try your feet at some grape stomping.

Time from Jacksonville: just over 1 hour

Feed some retired horses

This is going to be one of the memorable trips you ever take. Mill Creek Farm is a sanctuary for retired and rescued horse. Every Saturday you can visit the farm and see and pet some beautiful animals. The fee to enter the farm just two carrots.

See the view from the top of Florida's tallest lighthouse. The Ponce Inlet Lighthouse is a National Historic Monument and a great place to make your Fitbit happy. There's also a museum you can check out while you're there.

Time from Jacksonville: 1 hour and 40 minutes

Lift your spirits

While the craft beer scene has been popular for years, recently, craft distilleries have been all the rage. The St. Augustine Distillery is a great place to tour and learn about how they make spirits. It's also a great place to sample some of those spirits.

See all the Spanish moss in Mandarin

Just south of Jacksonville is the lovely neighborhood of Mandarin. Step 1: walk along the avenues and see all the gorgeous Spanish moss draped over old oak trees. Step 2: pretend you're in a Southern mystery novel. Why I declare Miss Daisy is the culprit!

Mandarin also has a great walk along the water and lots of restaurants worth checking out.

Stay in Mandarin for a cold one

The Wicked Barley Brewing Company boasts of their "naughty ales for noble souls." They have a covered patio and you can even reach the brewery by boat. Head up during the week for some great eats on Taco Tuesday.

Brave what has to be the world's tiniest ferry

Ok, so this ferry might hold two cars. Or maybe a few motorcycles. People apparently use this ferry all the time to cross the St. Johns River. For many, braving this teeny fairy cuts their trip down by 50 miles.

The American Beach Museum tells the story of “The Negro Ocean Playground,” a Black beach, during segregation.

Sunset at Jekyll Island. Jekyll is located off the coast of the U.S. state of Georgia, in Glynn County. It is one of the Sea Islands and one of the Golden Isles of Georgia barrier islands.

6. Georgia’s Golden Isles

Go East into Georgia’s Golden Isles in less than an hour and 15 minutes. They’re like three sisters with a lot of the same basic attractions but different personalities.

Cumberland Island

Cumberland Island , accessible only by National Park Ferry or private boats, is the wild child of the sisters. The oldest standing building on the island, Tabby House, was built around 1790 by General Nathaniel Greene as a temporary dwelling. The most striking structure is Dungeness Castle ruins . Built by Thomas Carnegie on the site of the original Dungeness ruins, fire ravaged it in 1959, leaving only a skeleton. Ice House Museum, originally the Carnegies’ icehouse, covers the island history.

Feral horses, descendants of horses abandoned from early settlers to dray horses abandoned during the Civil War, are one species of animal life that you’ll see.

Greyfield , the site of JFK. Jr.’s wedding reception, is the only lodging on the island.

Footsteps Tour walks you through the Dungeness Historic District, while the Land and Legacies Tour travels to the north end of the island where participants view Plum Orchard, Stafford Cemetery, and the African American Settlement. Learn more about the Cumberland Island tours here .

There are five primitive campgrounds on the island.

Pro Tips: To get around the island, you can hike or bring a bike or rent one at the concession stand. Bring food and drinks with you and haul out trash. This is the only destination I recommend that might be strenuous if you or someone you’re traveling with is challenged by walking a lot or being outdoors for several hours. There are no restaurants or motorized transportation, and all the facilities on the island are primitive.

St. Simons Island

St. Simons Island is the stately sister. Fort Frederica , the largest, most-costly British fort in North America, is where its modern history began in 1736. Parts of the fort, the barracks, and some foundations remain.

Hamilton Plantation and Slave Cabins offers a glimpse into what life was like for enslaved people on St. Simons. Two cabins remain. They’re just a few blocks down Arthur J. Moore Drive from Gascoigne Bluff Park.

If you are seeing faces peering at you from the gnarled oaks, you haven’t lost it. You’re seeing the Tree Spirits of St. Simons!

One name you’ll hear on Saint Simons Island is Eugenia Price, the novelist who moved here and wrote about the real-life settlers. Christ Church , built in 1884 to replace the church destroyed by Union troops during the Civil War, has a cemetery with stones dating to the 1700s. It contains the remains of many of Eugenia Price’s characters and the author herself.

St. Simons Lighthouse holds many ghost stories. It’s one of the oldest working lighthouses in the nation. Neptune Park sits between the pier and the lighthouse. The park’s iconic sculpture of a mother whale and her baby reminds visitors of the Right Whales that visit this coast. If you’re lucky, you may spot one of the few remaining whales that use this area as their calving ground from December to March.

The World War II Home Front Museum , the island’s newest museum, is the only museum telling the story of German ships that prowled our Atlantic shoreline.

One great way to see the island is on the Lighthouse Trolley Tour, while the Dolphin Boat Tour is a wonderful way to see the watery side of St. Simons and some dolphins. Both are offered by Lighthouse Trolleys Land & Sea Tours .

The best lodging is King and Prince Resort , dating to pre-WWII. They have an award-winning restaurant, ECHO. There are many great restaurants here: Georgia Sea Grill, Gnat’s Landing, Southern Soul BBQ, and, for something different, Golden Isles Olive Oil.

Jekyll Island

Jekyll Island is the sister that married money. Today, as a state park, many of the millionaires’ “cottages” are open to tour including homes owned by Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Pulitzer, Goodyear, Macy, Crane, J.P. Morgan, and more. There’re several tours that take you to see the mansions and other parts of the island. Relive the golden age at Jekyll Island Club Resort , where you’ll be pampered in Victorian elegance. If you want to keep playing the millionaire, dine in the Grand Dining Room. Golfers have a choice of four club courses.

Visit Mosaic Jekyll Island Museum for island history. Moving back to the 21st century, see the Georgia Sea Turtle Center.

Jekyll Island Campground , on the north end of the island, has everything from primitive to full hookup. The campers’ store has bike rentals so you can use the 20 miles of paved bike trails.

This gives you a week’s worth of day trips, but you will definitely want to spend more time in some of these small-town charmers. Each is unique and equally fun to visit.

  • Ginnie Springs
  • Devil’s Den
  • Rainbow Springs
  • Ichetucknee Springs

A road trip to Florida’s natural springs can be perfect for summer or fall! They are the most scenic places in Florida!

The 72-degree waters will cool you down during the hottest summer day. During the winter, manatees migrate to the springs to keep warm.

Start your tour in Weeki Wachee to watch mermaids swim in the spring waters before heading north on US 19 to Crystal River, a spring near Tampa . If you time it right, you can attend their Manatee Festival!

Take US-41 to get to Rainbow Springs State Park , which actually has six waterfalls! Then hop back on US-41 to head north to Devil’s Den, a diver’s haven!

Get back on, you guessed it, US-41, and keep going north and you’ll hit three springs grouped very close together! Take your pick between Gilchrist Blue Springs , Ginnie Springs , or Ichetucknee Springs . Or visit them all!

End your journey by driving north for just another hour and you’ll reach Madison Blue Springs, where you can swim and relax as your final reward!

If you are planning a road trip in Florida, you definitely need to check out some springs!

  • Florida Domes
  • Edison & Ford Winter Estates
  • Ringling Museum

For a relatively short day trip, make the drive from Tampa to Naples! Along the way, you’ll hit some major Gulf Coast cities, each with its own architectural gems.

When you head south to Sarasota , a treasure trove of attractions awaits you! Skip the traditional beaches and head out to Beer Can Island , a truly secluded spot.

Or check out architectural masterpieces like the Ringling Museum and the Ca D’Zan!

Next up in Fort Myers , you can tour the Edison and Ford Winter Estates! Yes, the Thomas Edison of the lightbulb and the Henry Ford of Ford Motors. You can see their homes, their vintage Ford vehicles, and even their laboratory!

Everglades Road Trip

The road continues through the Pinelands and into the Dwarf Cypress Forest whose leaves actually change during fall in Florida!

After passing Rock Reef Pass, stop at Pa-Hay-Okee Overlook. You’ll have the best views of the enormous sawgrass prairies from the elevated platform.

After another 20 miles, you can see the nation’s largest mahogany tree on Mahogany Hammock Trail!

Unfortunately, it doesn’t make for a great photo op. The tree is 90 feet tall and the shorter trees shroud the mahogany’s height.

Keep on to Nine Mile Pond for canoeing and kayaking!

If you’re driving towards the end of March to early April, stop at Mrazek Pond. During this time, and only this time, it becomes one of the best birding spots in the country.

After passing several optional hiking trails, you’ll arrive at the Flamingo Visitor Center, your final destination. Here, you can book an airboat tour to see the nooks and crannies of the park not visible from the road.

It is clear the Everglades is one of the top places to go on a road trip in Florida!

Day trips from jacksonville: beaches, springs, american history.

By Kevin Mims

A vacation day trip from Jacksonville can mean driving south and cruising the beaches along Florida’s Atlantic Coast, going west to hike in a national forest or splash in the freshwater springs, visit historic landmarks, and so much more.

Here are 10 great day trips you can make easily from your base in Jacksonville.

swimming area at Salt Springs, snorkeler

The large swimming area at Salt Springs is shallow enough for waders and deep enough for snorkelers.

- Amanda Mims

Salt Springs, 82 miles

About 90 minutes south of Jacksonville, and west of the St. Johns River within the Ocala National Forest , lies Salt Springs . The clear, turquoise waters here and slight salinity make it a beautiful place to swim and see wildlife such as stingrays and crabs. Salt Springs has a wide swimming area, some of which is shallow enough for children to wade. Stay for a picnic and explore the easy two-mile hiking trail.

Daytona Beach, 89 miles

Daytona Beach is immediately renowned as a capital of car racing and family beach vacations, but the list of things to do here is long and varied. Spend the day surfing, boating, or fishing. Find a spot to relax along the city’s 23 miles of beaches and stroll the historic pier and boardwalk . Explore the museums and cultural centers , a historic lighthouse , or go shopping . See the Daytona International Speedway , home of the annual Daytona 500, and take a tour that includes the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America . Visit Jackie Robinson Ballpark , the local stadium and now shrine where the late Hall of Famer and civil rights pioneer integrated professional baseball.

Amelia Island, 33 miles

Thirteen miles long and four miles wide, Amelia Island is nonetheless packed with history, natural beauty, and Florida vacation experiences. Start with Fernandina Beach on the north end and visit Fort Clinch State Park , whose 1,400 acres include golden-sand beaches, a Civil War-era fort, and scenic oak hammocks. To the south, American Beach was a historic African-American shoreline established during segregation in the 1930s. A museum and a 40-acre historic district preserve that story.

Directly south of Amelia Island are Big Talbot Island State Park and its “boneyard beach” of bleached oak remnants, Little Talbot Island State Park , and Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve .

Cross Creek, 82 miles

In the 1930s, the small community of Cross Creek was made famous by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Yearling . Today, the Rawlings home and farm, just south of Gainesville, are open to visitors as Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park . Public tours of her home, preserved as she had kept it all those years ago, are available, and visitors can walk the grounds and see her car parked next to the house and the orange trees and magnolias like the ones she wrote about, as well as the barn, tenant house, and flourishing vegetable garden.

Osceola National Forest, 54 miles

Osceola National Forest covers 200,000 acres of wilderness between Jacksonville and Lake City. Ocean Pond is one of its most popular day-use spots, and for good reasons: the ample opportunities for fishing and hiking, the two-acre pond’s sandy beach, and the picnic area off its scenic shore.

Just outside the national forest is Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park , where reenactments of Florida’s largest Civil War battle take place every February.

De Leon Springs, 96 miles

A stack of pancakes, a slice of Florida history, and a dip in a cool, clear spring make for an incredible day trip, and all of these things are available at De Leon Springs State Park .

The Sugar Mill Restaurant, open for breakfast and lunch, is a century-old replica of the 1830s mill that once stood here. In the cooler months, restaurant patrons can relax next to a crackling fire while their food is prepared. Part of the fun of this restaurant is the cook-your-own option: Guests receive a pitcher of batter and make pancakes on cast iron griddles right at the table.

The Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge visitor center has native wildlife exhibits and a native plant garden. In the mood for a river cruise? Book a Fountain of Youth ECO/History Tour , which begins at De Leon Springs State Park and takes passengers through the waterways of the wildlife refuge.

Flagler Beach, 71 miles

The easy beach access and uninterrupted ocean views from A1A roadside cafes stamp this coastal community with a retro charm. A classic fishing pier stretches into the Atlantic Ocean and serves as a nightly gathering spot. The come-as-you-are atmosphere makes for a perfect family-friendly day trip.

Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area is a small park sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. You can play in the waves, lie on the cinnamon-colored sand, and eat watermelon slices in the shade of a picnic shelter.

At Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park , the remains of the 19 th -century plantation house, slave cabins, and sugar mill are testimonials to the Second Seminole War and earned the park a place on the National Register of Historic Places.

Also check out Washington Oaks Gardens State Park in nearby Palm Coast , where you can explore the formal gardens, fish, hike, or spend time on the beach.

Gainesville, 72 miles

Home of the University of Florida , Gainesville is a center of academia, arts, culture , and outdoor recreation , with miles of hiking and biking trails, theaters, and museums. At the Florida Museum of Natural History , birds and butterflies roam free in the Butterfly Rainforest .

Wander just south of Gainesville to Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park and you may see roaming herds of wild horses and bison. The small town of Micanopy is a place to shop for art and antiques, stop for lunch, and stroll the quiet main street. One day is not enough to see all that Gainesville has to offer. Just keep coming back.

Castillo de San Marcos, 17th-century landmark, St. Augustine

Castillo de San Marcos, the 17th-century landmark known to locals as “the fort,” is the centerpiece of St. Augustine’s historic district.

- Daron Dean

St. Augustine, 41 miles

St. Augustine , first inhabited by the Timucuan and then settled in 1565 by Europeans, is commonly called the nation’s oldest city. Its past still thrives in the present.

Among the must-see historic sites are Castillo de San Marcos National Monument (locals say “the fort” as shorthand), the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park , the Spanish Military Hospital Museum , the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Heritage Museum , and Fort Mose , the first free African-American settlement in the United States. See the sights on foot, by horse-drawn carriage, by trolley, or by boat .

Ichetucknee Springs, 83 miles

Ichetucknee Springs State Park is an unforgettable springs and river adventure. The clear-as-glass Ichetucknee River is one of the best places in the state for tubing, and tube rentals and shuttles are available. The river is also a great place for seeing wildlife from a kayak or paddleboard, and the two springs within the state park are perfect for snorkeling.

Ichetucknee is among the most famous of Florida’s freshwater springs, whose waters derive from an underground aquifer and measure a constant 72 degrees.

20 East Coast Road Trips (with Maps & 1-Week Itineraries)

20 east coast 1 week road trips lighthouse and bridge over water

The family road trip has made a comeback and with it, families are looking for even more road trip ideas. While plenty of East Coasters have made the road trip down 95 to Florida over the years, now families want to take time to stop and explore along the way. With so much to see, we have divided this part of the country up into 20 different East Coast road trips, each of which could be done in a one-week vacation.

Each of these mini East Coast road trip itineraries will give you ideas for new ways to explore sections of the East Coast of the U.S.A. Check off one at a time or string a few together for a longer vacation.

Not sure where to start? Here are my top picks:

  • Best for nature fans: White & Green Mountains in NH and VT
  • Best for history buffs : Colonial History Philadelphia to Williamsburg
  • Best for beach lovers: Coastal Islands: Wilmington NC to Jacksonville FL
  • Best for national park stampers: Blue Ridge Mountains
  • Best for theme park fans: Daytona to Tampa
  • Best iconic views: Florida Keys road trip

20 East Coast Road Trips

Each of these East Coast road trip ideas should take approximately 7 to 10 days to complete as outlined. My goal is to only require one week of vacation time from work, since that is the typical family vacation. I’ve linked to some more detailed road trip itineraries and included maps to give you an overview of the route.

New England Coast: Boston to Bar Harbor, ME

Portland Head Light rocks

The drive from Boston, Massachusetts up to Bar Harbor, Maine can be done in about four hours on the highway, but it is better to take the scenic route and explore Vacationland’s scenic coast along the way. One of the best East Coast road trips, this one is full of Maine foods like lobster rolls, blueberry soda, and whoopie pies; as well as lighthouses, rocky coasts, quaint small towns, and Acadia National Park .

Portland: spend 2 nights in Portland exploring the Old Port, maybe taking a lobster boat tour, climbing on the rocks by Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, or spending a day shopping at the L.L. Bean outlet up in Freeport. You could also visit some local breweries or take a day trip to Maine Wildlife Park in Gray to see some moose.

Where to stay: The Press Hotel , Inn by the Sea , or the Courtyard Marriott Waterfront

Boothbay Harbor: spend 1-2 nights in Boothbay Harbor . On your way, stop and enjoy the coastal towns, Giant’s Stairs in Harpswell, spend an afternoon soaking up the sun on Popham Beach, a rare sandy stretch of sand, and be sure to line up for lobster rolls at Red Eats.

The next day, get out on the water with one of Boothbay Harbor’s many sightseeing cruises to see puffins or whales, or rent a sea kayak to explore Muscongus Bay. Leave time to browse at the many boutiques in town.

Where to stay: Tugboat Inn , Fisherman’s Wharf Inn

Rockland: spend 1 night enjoying the artistic town of Rockland . Pop into the Center for Maine Contemporary Art or the Farnsworth Art Museum. If the outdoors holds more appeal, hop aboard a traditional Maine Windjammer for a short sail, walk along the Rockland Breakwater, or explore the trails at Camden Hills State Park. This arts city of Maine is such a delightful surprise!

Where to stay: 250 Main Hotel

Bar Harbor: finish up your road trip at the scenic town of Bar Harbor, just outside of Acadia National Park . You will want to spend 2 to 3 nights exploring the park. Try to catch a sunrise or sunset from the top of Cadillac Mountain, drive the Park Loop Road, relax on Sand Beach, stop to see the natural phenomenon at Thunder Hole, take in the view from Otter Cliffs, bike the Carriage Roads, and check out some of the popular hikes. Don’t forget to enjoy an authentic lobster pound before you take the fast route back to Portland. (See more things to do near Acadia National Park .)

Where to stay: Bar Harbor Grand Hotel , Hampton by Hilton Bar Harbor , or go glamping at the Terramor Outdoor Resort
