  • L’aéroport international de Héraklion Nikos-Kazantzakis qui se situe au centre de l’île de Crète ;

A look at the greek island of crete's three commercial airports.

The island's aviation scene is set to undergo changes in the coming years.

Situated in the Mediterranean sea to the southeast of the Greek mainland, the island of Crete is a popular destination among European holidaymakers. It is served by three commercial airports, with other facilities existing for general aviation and military purposes. Let's take a closer look at which airports handle which flights.

Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport (HER) is situated on the island's north coast, close to the resort of Malia. Not only is it Crete's busiest air hub, but it also ranks second (behind Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International) among Greek airports in terms of passenger traffic. In 2019, the last full calendar year of pre-coronavirus 'normality,' it handled nearly eight million passengers.

The airport is a joint commercial/military facility, and its longest runway (09/27) stretches for 2,714 meters. This allows it to handle larger aircraft, such as the Boeing 777 that Austrian Airlines deployed there amid huge demand last summer. However, for the most part, its traffic consists of seasonal and charter leisure traffic operated by European narrowbodies to cater to summer holiday demand.

All the usual European suspects fly to Heraklion seasonally, ranging from low-cost carriers like easyJet , Ryanair and Wizz Air to full-service flag carriers such as Air France, British Airways , and Finnair. Away from Europe, Etihad flies in from Abu Dhabi on a seasonal basis. Certain flights do operate all year, with most being domestic. However, Aegean also serves three German cities year-round.

Heraklion Airport Getty

The airline industry is always full of new developments! What aviation news will you check out next?

It is worth noting that there are plans to replace Heraklion Airport by the middle of the current decade. These will see operations transferred to an upgraded Kasteli Airport, which currently serves as a military base. This will reportedly result, among other aspects, in an extension that will bring Kastelis's runway to 3,800 meters long. Heraklion Airport will then be part of an urban regeneration project.

Crete's second-busiest commercial airport is Chania Daskalogiannis International (CHQ), in the northwest of the island. Before the coronavirus pandemic, this facility was handling around three million passengers per year. Much like Heraklion, this airport is also shared, in terms of usage, with the Hellenic Air Force.

Chania Airport operates similarly to its larger Cretan counterpart, with seasonal and charter leisure flights forming the bulk of its traffic. Year-round services primarily serve domestic destinations, namely Athens (Aegean Airlines, SkyExpress) and Thessaloniki (Ryanair). The only exception to this rule is the Cypriot destination of Paphos, to which Ryanair also flies all year round.

Located in the island's northeast, Sitia Vitsentzos Kornaros Public Airport (JSH) operates on a much smaller scale. Indeed, even in 2018, its busiest pre-pandemic year, the facility still only handled around 62,000 passengers, with this figure having dropped to just over 11,000 in 2020. Its runway is 2,074 meters long.

Owing to the regional nature of Sitia's operations, the flights that serve the airport do so all year round. Olympic Air provides a direct link to Athens, while SkyExpress serves Alexandroupoli, Preveza/Lefkada, and Zakynthos.

Crete Airports

There are 3 airports in Crete . The airports of Heraklion and Chania are proposing regular flights to Athens (both trips take about 45 minutes) and Thessaloniki (about 1 hour and a half). The airport of Heraklion also organizes flights to Rhodes, Kos and other Greek islands in summer (1 hour).

These two airports also receive charter flights from abroad, mainly from European cities. Crete island also has a small airport close to Sitia ( Lassithi ), which proposes only domestic flights to/from Athens and Karpathos in summer.

The airport is designated as a public facility, implying that it is open to the general public. It is no longer utilised for commercial flights. There are expenses involved with leaving the car at Maleme Airport, so it’s best to double-check the specifics before arriving. Security measures are presumably in place, although usual precautions are advised, given its present position as a military airstrip and a historical landmark.

There are choices for persons needing transportation after arriving at Maleme Airport. Rental automobile services are generally available at airports and Maleme provides them to travellers. It is best to check it with the airport or appropriate authorities for the most up-to-date information.

All my expectations were met. The hotel was good, the food however was not and bad mosquito problem. I enjoyed being in Hersonissos and a nice walk to the seaside restaurants of which there are many. All the day trips were interesting although long hours on the bus having to pick up people at their beach resorts. Crete is a big island so there was much ground to cover.

Discovering Crete, Self-drive Tour

Discovering Crete, Self-drive

It would have been excellent if not for a major problem with the car rental. You advertise the tour good for 18 to 99 years but in fine print you have to be 69 or younger? I was not advised until days before I was too old to tent(71). In the end I found a car on my own and was refunded the car portion but needless hassle and frustration sorting it out. Otherwise trip great!

Venetian Crete Tour

  • Food & Culinary

Venetian Crete

Though the basics like Itinerary, transportation, accommodation and meals were really good, there were a lot of issues in communication between the tour service, the hotel and the company in charge of touring us. The pick up times were kinda messy, too soon or too late, I even missed the bus one day and had to take a taxi to the next stop that it was a town over. While on the way to the airport they picked me up over half an hour late.

Reviews of crete tours.

Very good tour. Accommodation and day tours were great. The major problem were the transfers. Dropped off on the side of the road and told to walk approximately 500 metres to the hotel with no directions, the tour pick-up point was a 10 minute walk from the hotel and finally after waiting for our airport transfer for over an hour at the designated pick-up location had to organise a taxi ourselves. We were refunded the allocated transfer amount not the actual cost of the taxi so out of pocket as well.
Good hotel, good location, OK food, good tours
The tour of Crete was indeed Incredible due to two great gentlemen! RG and Kostintinos displayed the utmost professionalism and class as they drove us all through the island of Crete. They were very genuine and thoughtful to Michele and I throughout the entire trip. They both knew that we were eager to experience and learn about Crete. Michele and I wanted to see Crete through the eyes of the locals that’s reside there and RG and Kostas delivered! We went off the grid and had experiences with Epos Tours that we never could have planned ourselves. Kostas is a wealth of information regarding the culture and history of Crete. From the minute you meet these two men you will bond and have the best travel experience ever! Miss you both and thanks again!

Georgioupolis

Georgioupolis
