I traveled to Iceland in late February and booked this two day tour . The tour was excellent and tour guide Maria from Nice Travel made this tour even more memorable! She’s thoughtful and timing management very well. She’s caring and warm and made tour so pleasant. GuidetoIceland provided easy bookings, an online account tracking and reliable service. Recommended!

Unfortunately I did not get to see the Lights during my tour, but the tour company is very nice and allowed me to rebook the tour for another date. Then it got canceled again due to weather, but they gave me a full refund after I email them my request. Everything went smoothly, even though I didn't see the Lights, I still enjoyed and appreciated their high quality customer service!

A must for anyone visiting Iceland for the first time. We saw so much in two days . Our guide, David, was knowledgable, funny and experienced. Our favorite spots were the ice cave, glacier lagoon and a beautiful canyon (forgot the name but Justin Bieber took a famous photo there…. as I was told by our guide).

A brief history of Reykjavik

According to the ancient Landnámabók, otherwise known as the Book of Settlements, the first permanent settlement in Iceland was established in Reykjavík (“Smoky Bay”), located on the island’s south-western corner.

Legend has it that Ingólfur Arnarson, a Norwegian fleeing the tyranny of King Harald, chose his landing spot by flinging his two high seat pillars from his boat, then following them to shore—with the pillars finally taking their rightful place on each side of the chieftain’s high-seat, where he would sit within the household.

Today, there is some scepticism as to whether or not Ingólfur actually landed at the exact spot specified in the Book of Settlements. This is because of the low probability of the pillars landing where they did—given ocean currents and land’s distance from the boat—and the likelihood of Ingólfur having logically chosen to settle in close proximity to natural hot springs, knowing the importance of keeping his people warm during the harsh Icelandic winters.

Regardless, the settlement would begin to grow, with the early Norsemen quickly stripping the area for timber and pastures.

“Smoky Bay” implies an early confusion, at least linguistically, between the rising water vapour that emits from the geothermal hot springs so prevalent in Iceland, and smoke. Regardless, these billowing white clouds were enough to inspire the settlement’s name, with the original spelling using an extra ‘r’ (Reykjarvík) until it was abandoned in 1800.

Until the 18th Century, the area we know today as Reykjavík was little more than farmland, reflective of the rest of Iceland at that time. When the Danish monarchy took an interest in stimulating the region’s wool industry, however, a number of mills were built and Danes became the settlement’s primary employer for a number of decades. During this time, other industries such as fisheries and shipbuilding also began to make more of an economic impact.

Due to this development, the town was granted an official charter in 1786 after the Danish abolished their trade monopoly. This date is thus considered to be the city’s founding.

In the following years, Iceland’s capital would see a wave of independence movements, an invasion force, three ‘Cod Wars’, the 1972 World Chess Championships, and even the Reykjavík Summit in 1986, taking place between the U.S. and Soviet Cold War powers. Aside from all of that, the city has birthed some incredible artists over recent years, namely the experimental songstress, Björk, as well as bands such as Sigur Rós, Kaleo and Of Monsters and Men.

Those who visit Reykjavík today will discover a modern European capital that balances contemporary Nordic architecture with historic and traditional buildings.

Homing approximately two-thirds of Iceland’s entire population, guests unravel a city rich in artistic culture, community spirit, music, poetry and love, all the while surrounded by the glittering beauty of Faxaflói Bay and the towering mountain, Esja, that has always overlooked the capital. Many travellers choose Reykjavík as a base from which to explore South and West Iceland, for example by going on a  day tour of the Golden Circle  or  Snæfellsnes Peninsula .

Since 2010, urban development has been accelerating in line with the ever-growing influx of foreign visitors, meaning new hotels and accommodation, new planning projects, new tour operators. In short, Reykjavík is the beating heart of Icelandic culture.

Great tour. Despite some very bad unexpected bad weather our guide went above and beyond to ensure we were safe and comfortable. When the weather wasn’t in our favour always had a plan B. Cosy neat accomodation. Lots and lots of delicious food. Definitely won’t go hungry! Beautiful beautiful scenery.

Iceland Discovery Tour

Overall a great journey with a fantastic guide and wonderful experienced travelers. Stefan our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable about Iceland’s history and natural resources. He masterfully and safety manuvered our bus through icy mountain roads and muddy trails to reach our daily objectives. Our accomodations were adequate and comfortable with complimentary breakfasts in the morning. Our guide made frequent rest stops and ensured our meal requirements were met with several options. He gave us sufficient time to explore each attraction after his explanation of their significance. He made a smooth transition to our accomodations each evening and assisted with luggage. Great communications and coordination between Tourradar/Intrepid Tours and the traveler. I will definately book another tour with you in the future!

The hike was beautiful and very well organized. Our guide - Yonn - did an amazing job of keeping a large group organized and coordinated. His attention to detail, description of locations, local history and knowledge was a great added value. Food was delicious and satisfying. Would suggest limiting group size as we were a large group. Also, the description on tour radar could have more accurately described the hike - providing elevation/topograhic profiles to show the terrain would have been helpful. Despite some challenging weather - would definitely do this again. Have already recommended it to many people! This trek was a wonderful way to see some rugged and beautiful landscape and really get away from it all.

Reviews of reykjavik tours.

Our time with Arctic Adventures was great. We learned a lot and saw such beautiful landscapes. There was some stress related to not knowing where we were going to stay prior to our departure… it wasn’t until we had landed in Reykjavik that we knew which hotel to go to. I wish airport transfers were included as it would have been less to worry about. All in all, it was a memorable trip.

The 10 Best Reykjavik Tours

Golden circle tours.

The most famous Reykjavik tours are those that take in the Golden Circle. If it’s your first visit to the country, this should be at the top of your list.

Starting in the capital, the excursion heads out to some of Iceland’s most revered natural sights, with everything from waterfalls to volcanoes on the agenda.

Highlights include the Geysir Geothermal Area, and the mighty Gullfoss Waterfall which thunders through the Hvítá River canyon.

You’ll also visit the historic Thingvellir National Park and the Kerid Volcanic Crater for some epic photo opportunities. On many excursions, you’ll finish with a thrilling snowmobile ride across the Langjökull Glacier.

Northern Lights Tour from Reykjavik

Hunting the northern lights is one of the top reasons to visit Iceland in winter. Seeing them is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Also known as the aurora borealis, the dancing green lights appear in the night sky when conditions are right between October and April.

Several Reykjavik tours whisk you off into the wilderness in search of the northern lights. It’s best to head away from the city and towards the countryside where there’s no light pollution.

Boat trips and jeep tours are the most popular ways to explore, and the experienced guides know all the best viewing spots.

Southern Coast and Glacier Tours

The rugged southern coast of Iceland is easily accessible on a day trip from Reykjavik. If you’re into wild beaches, glacial lagoons and volcanic peaks, then this is the tour for you.

You’ll be driven along the coastal road, which is lined by snow-capped mountains and crashing waterfalls.

Marvel at the blues and blacks of the Sólheimajökull Glacier , as you hike along the ice with your guide. Then embrace the spray at the waterfalls of Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss – you can walk behind the latter for a unique perspective!

Tours usually end with a jaunt to Reynisfjara Beach for a stroll on the black sand.

Snorkeling in Silfra Fissure

On these intrepid Reykjavik tours, you’ll get up close and personal with two tectonic plates. Located in Thingvellir National Park, the Silfra Fissure is a rift between the Eurasian and North American plates.

The best way to explore this unusual natural site is on a snorkeling excursion .

From the surface, Silfra looks like an unassuming river, trickling gently through the park. Yet the moment you submerge yourself in the rift, a whole new world reveals itself.

Yes, the water is chilly, but you’ll be wearing a drysuit to keep warm. As you float between continents, admire the underwater geology and see if you can spot an Arctic char.

Reykjavik Whale Watching Cruises

Over 20 species of whale come to feed off the Icelandic coast, making Reykjavik the perfect base for boat tours . Sightings aren’t guaranteed, but there’s no better place to take the chance.

As you sail out of the harbor, keep your eyes peeled for spouts that will reveal the location of the gentle giants. As well as humpback and minke whales, you may spot porpoises and dolphins during your boat trip.

This is a great location for puffins too, and you’ll often encounter these comical birds perched on the cliffs around the city. Dedicated puffin watching tours focus on finding these “clowns of the sea”.

Landmannalaugar Tour from Reykjavik

Landmannalaugar is a geological wonderland with some of the best views in the country. These popular Reykjavik tours transport you into the rugged highlands that lie east of the city.

This world is where volcanoes and glaciers have stood for centuries, and hot springs bubble up from the ancient ground.

You’ll hike along remote trails, winding through black lava fields and past the colorful rhyolite mountains. Intrepid souls can summit a dormant volcano and marvel at the rainbow effect of the “Sulphur Wave.”

Back down in the valley, you can reward your efforts with a dip in one of the geothermal pools.

Icelandic Traditional Food Tours in Reykjavik

Some of the best Reykjavik tours involve food because Icelandic cuisine is so tasty, and healthy! You’ll get to visit several restaurants and markets where sampling local delicacies is the order of the day.

The famous lamb hotdog, creamy skyr yogurt and lobster soup are all on the menu.

Walking tours are the easiest way to get around, and your guide will know all the best eating spots.

Beer tastings are also available at the city’s top bars and breweries. You’ll get to try regional craft beers and snaps while washing it all down with some tapas-style treats.

Horse Riding in Lava Fields

Get back to nature on a horseback trek through the wild Icelandic interior. You’ll discover lava fields and remote valleys that are difficult to access on foot, all with the help of your friendly steed.

There are riding excursions available for both beginners and experts, so don’t worry if you’ve not ridden before.

Walking, trotting or even cantering through the volcanic terrain is like going on a journey through time.

It’s a world away from the trappings of modern-day life, and with the wind in your hair, you’ll feel like a true explorer. All you need is a sense of adventure!

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Day Trip

Iceland got its name for a reason – there’s a lot of ice here! One of the best places to experience it is at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, a few hours’ drive east of Reykjavik along the ring road.

Sitting beneath Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, the lagoon is filled with icebergs all year round.

The water is a striking blue color, which contrasts starkly with the white of the icebergs. Some tours from Reykjavik include a boat ride on the lagoon to see the floating ice up close.

Keep an eye out for seals and sea birds which are regularly sighted visiting the lake.

Snæfellsnes Peninsula Day Tour

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is like a mini Iceland, with many landforms and natural environments in one spot. You’ll find here glaciers, lava caves, volcanic beaches, mountains and waterfalls.

Reykjavik tours to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula are a great choice if you want a diverse day out with lots of show-stopping photo opportunities.

A highlight of the trip is seeing the eye-catching outline of Kirkjufell. Known as “Church Mountain,” this iconic peak was a filming location for the “Game of Thrones” series.

You’ll also walk on the black sands of Djúpalónssandur beach and admire views of the Snæfellsjökull volcano.

Planning your visit to reykjavik, about reykjavik.

Reykjavik is the starting point for most trips to Iceland. Many visitors spend a couple of days here at the start or end of their vacation to learn about the heritage of this remote island.

Renowned for its culture, the capital of Iceland has everything from Viking restaurants to contemporary museums. There’s a thriving arts scene here too, with galleries and theaters giving the city a sophisticated appeal.

Regular international flights from around Europe and the United States make visiting Iceland an easy undertaking. The island is often used as a stop-over destination between the two continents.

Good to know before arriving

If it’s your first time in Reykjavik, the downtown district makes a good base. Many major tourist sites are found here, along with restaurants, bars and shops.

The Reykjavik City Card is a good buy if you’re in town for a few days. It’ll give you discounts on both attractions and transport. It’s easy to get around the center on foot, but for longer distances, there’s a budget-friendly bus network.

Be aware that the weather in Iceland is unpredictable, so packing warm clothes and a raincoat is advised. If you’re visiting during winter, be prepared for darkness – daylight hours are short between November and February.

Places and experiences that cannot be missed

Reykjavik is a launch pad for adventures into the Icelandic wilderness, but don’t forget to see what the city itself has to offer. Hop-on hop-off bus tours are a hassle-free way of taking in the main attractions.

Meanwhile, the Blue Lagoon is the perfect place for a soak after a day of sightseeing.

Reykjavik’s museums are also worth a visit on a rainy day. The Whales of Iceland Museum is the largest of its kind in the world, while the Perlan Museum is home to an indoor ice cave. If you want to learn about volcanoes, head to the high-tech Lava Center and discover how Iceland was born.

All About the City of Reykjavik

Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland and the northernmost capital in the world. It’s a lively city full of museums and restaurants and nurtures innovative art and music scenes. What Reykjavik lacks in a population (just over 120,000 people) it more than makes up for in personality and charm. This is your complete guide to Reykjavik.

Where is Reykjavik?

Reykjavík is located on Faxafói Bay in southwest Iceland. The city was settled in 874 AD by Ingólfur Arnarson and his family. Reykjavík, or smoky bay in Icelandic, is so named for the “smoke” or steam the first settlers saw rising from the many geothermal springs in the area.

How do you say Reykjavík?

While it can seem like a mouthful to the non-Scandinavian language speaker, it’s easy enough once you know some basic rules of Icelandic. “Ey” is pronounced like the long “a” in rake. The letter “j” has yuh sound, and “í” is said like “ee” in English. Put all that together, and you get rake-yuh-veek. Reykjavík.

When to Visit Reykjavik

All-year-round. Iceland doesn’t have very drastic seasonal changes, but daylight hours do vary in the extreme depending on the time of year. At the height of mid-winter, Iceland only gets about 4 hours of daylight while in midsummer, it is bathed in 24 hours of daylight (depending on cloud cover). Although it never gets really hot in the summer, it can get relatively warm. Temperatures average 13.3ºC (55.9ºF) in July and −3.0ºC (26.6ºF) in January. Icelandic weather is notoriously unpredictable, so it is possible to experience these extremes at any time of year.

What to Do in Reykjavik

Walk on down to Reykjavík's City Hall and buy a City Card . This card gets you free access or a discount, to many museums and restaurants and free admission to Reykjavík's swimming pools and on city buses.

With this card in hand, you can: Visit the dozens of museums , go for a swim in one of the local pools, and eat and drink at the local restaurants and bars. It’s also lovely to walk around downtown Reykjavik and visit with the local cats, pop into a bookstore, café, or one of the many small art galleries located around the city.

Where to Visit

Perlan - Gives visitors a bird’s eye view of the city with its 360º observation deck, a museum that features exhibitions of Iceland’s natural wonders, including an ice cave and a northern lights planetarium show.

Harpa - Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre is an ode to the Icelandic landscape on the harbor, mimicking the shape of columnar basalt and the colors of the northern lights. This venue is also home to the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and The Icelandic Opera.

Höfði - Visit this historic site that played host to the 1986 summit between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev.

Hallgrímskirkja - This iconic church on a hill is hard to miss. Head to the top of the tower for an amazing view of downtown.

Old Harbour - With views of the harbor and Mount Esja, this area is home to a number of shops, cafés, museums, and bike rental shops, and is the base for whale and puffin watching tours.

Reykjavik-harbor-harpa

What to Wear

Layers. Rule number one for dressing in Iceland is to wear layers and always be ready for rain. In Reykjavik, you can experience all the seasons in one day. A good rule of thumb is always to wear three layers— whatever it is you want to wear plus:

●    Sweater/Jumper

●    Water-resistant outer layer

Those more susceptible to cold may want to add wool leggings and a thermal undershirt in the winter. Warm socks, fairly water-resistant shoes (or hiking boots for outdoor activities), gloves, and a hat are also a must even in summer.

Why does the hot water smell?

Reykjavik’s hot water comes from both deep boreholes, which naturally contain varying concentrations of sulfur (the first source of the smell), and geothermal plants. To remove oxygen from the water, a small amount of hydrogen sulfide (the second source of the smell) is added. Removing oxygen from the water helps prevent corrosion of the city’s water pipes.

Is one of the most famous sites in Reykjavik as it is the tallest church in Iceland. Best known for its pipe organ, which is almost 50 feet high the church took over 40 years to build. A statue of Leif Erickson is also on the property. The church is free to visit but please know it has regular religious services.

Every visitor needs a view of the entire city on your Reykjavik Itinerary! Make sure to head to the observation deck for that view. The admission for the observation deck is under $10- and an elevator that takes you to the top.

The Church with a great view is a must on your Reykjavik itinerary with views of mount Etna and the downtown area from the top of the tower

Stop 4: Museums

There are several museums to choose from if looking for things to do in Reykjavik depending on age and interests for your Reykjavik Itinerary.

A visit to the National Museum will give visitors the history of Iceland from the Viking exploration to modern-day history. Explore artifacts, exhibits, artwork, and more. Open daily 10 am to 5 pm and costs $20 to enter for adults and is free for those under 18!

With 2 days in Reykjavik

For those looking to build an Itinerary for 2 days in Reykjavik, we have you covered, with another full day of exploring Iceland. You will complete all of the day one itinerary and use day two as an add-on list of things to do. This is perfect for those spending a weekend in Reykjavik and want to explore outside of the downtown area.  From a spa visit, National Park, whale watching, and Northern lights you are sure to see it all!

Stop 1: New Sky Lagoon

After spending all of yesterday exploring downtown Reykjavik, what better way to reset than a visit to another geothermal spa. Located just 15 minutes from the city center, New Sky Lagoon opened in 2021 and became the go-to for rest and relaxation.

Visits start at $50, but we suggest splurging for the 7-step ritual! Start with the relaxing geothermal lagoon, followed by glacier cold pool, saunas, cold mist, scrub, steam, and end with a shower.

After being thoroughly relaxed, you can enjoy a bit to eat in the cafe or head to the next stop.

The beautiful geothermal pool at Sky Lagoon

Stop 2: Thingvellir National Park

Thingvellir National park is a must for those wanting to explore more than downtown Reykjavik in 2 days! It is just a 45-minute drive from downtown and is a very popular destination for those looking to experience the natural beauty of Iceland.

For those who did not rent a car, there are plenty of tours you can book to visit here. It is worth noting that the National Park is free to visit but there is a small parking fee.

Stop in the visitors center to learn about the National Park , at this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Warm-up with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and snack, shop for souvenirs, and grab a map of the park! It is also one of the  Game Of Thrones Filming Locations !

Now it is time to explore the National Park. We think one of the coolest things to do in Thingvellir National Park is to walk between the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasian that meet here! Snap a photo of yourself straddling the divide. Or for the adventurous traveler and scuba certified you can snorkel or scuba diving the Silfra Fissure .

Finally, visit the first waterfall on our Rekjavik itinerary! The Oxarafoss waterfall is really easy to get to from one of the car parks in the park. It is an easy 10-minute walk.  An added bonus is the Thingvellir Church. Not only one of the prettiest churches in Iceland but also one of the oldest.

Best restaurants for your Reykjavik itinerary

There is no shortage of amazing places to eat in Reykjavik to eat. It is worth noting the capital city is more expensive than you will find once you explore the Ring Road or Golden Circle Route. We have curated a list of the best places for breakfast , and great restaurants you must try on your Reykjavik Itinerary.

Noodle Station

One of our favorites is Noodle Station! The restaurant (while not cheap) is on the inexpensive side as far as Iceland goes.

Noddle Station is frequented by locals and visitors alike who all seek out the delicious chicken, beef, or vegetable noodle soup. Mixed into the broth are secret ingredients that come straight from a family recipe passed down from the owner’s grandmother.

You can expect noodle soup full of delightful flavors, and you’ll wish the ingredients weren’t such a well-guarded secret. With solid portion sizes and quick service, Noodle Station is the perfect stop to thaw out and warm up before continuing to explore the stops on your Reykjavik itinerary.

Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur

You may think, why go to Iceland to eat hot dogs at an unassuming hot dog stand? The answer is that Bæjarins Betztu Pylsur serves uniquely Icelandic hot dogs and has become almost as much a tourist attraction as it is a destination for excellent Reykjavik street food. Plus, it is one of the most inexpensive places you will eat.

The little red stand has been serving up hot dogs near the Reykjavik harbor since 1937. Delighting many a local with its lamb hot dogs topped with fried onions, raw onions, ketchup, Icelandic sweet mustard, and remoulade.

Visit the one at Tryggvagata 1 in downtown Reykjavik.

Sea Baron (or Sægreifinn) is located on Reykjavik’s harbor. If you’re looking for fresh, Icelandic seafood done right, this is one of the best places to eat!

Known for their famous, mouthwatering lobster soup, Sea Baron also offers delicious fish skewers featuring all kinds of fresh fish grilled on a spear. The bonus is the delicious restaurant won’t break the bank!

Pair your meal with a beer or a free cup of coffee and you’ll have all the fuel you need to keep exploring this beautiful country.

Reykjavik Fish

The best fish and chips in Reykjavik is served at Reykjavik Fish. After a busy first day of exploring, the large portions of delicious battered cod paired with one of five different sauces will hit the spot. Cod is the only option for the fish and chips, but it’s unbelievably fresh and distinctly Icelandic!

Also served are other traditional Icelandic dishes such as arctic char, Icelandic plokkari (gratinated fish and potatoes), and fish soup. Finish your meal with a taste of one of the local beers in Iceland.
