An amazing experience. From the culture and history to the vibrant busy streets to calm and spiritual. This trip gave us a taste of the North of India. It was very well planned and organised. We felt safe and very well looked after. Everyone was considerate, helpful and friendly. We would love to go back to different areas of India, we will also look at tour radar and wanderful holidays for other travel experiences. Thank you so much.

Yoga, Ganga & Tajmahal - Golden Triangle with Haridwar & Rishikesh !! Tour

Yoga, Ganga & Tajmahal - Golden Triangle with Haridwar & Rishikesh !!

This was a really great tour. It stood out to me because it was a better deal for traveling alone with a lower single person supplement fee than other tours, while still offering 10 days in total, and adding on the unique ability to go to Rishikesh and Haridwar, along with the popular golden triangle cities of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. Rishikesh in my opinion is a bit of a hidden gem. It is a very beautiful city up near the mountains of India, and the culture is unique to that of other cities I visited in India. The evening Aarti singing at sunsets are a must see, and Yoga that I was able to participate in twice on the tour is prevalent in the city to add to the relaxed culture. All this and I still was able to see the Taj Mahal in Agra, and ride an elephant up to the beautiful Amber Fort in Jaipur. The elephant ride wasn't initially part of my itinerary but the tour was flexible with allowing me to do it since we were visiting the Amber Fort anyway. If you have already seen something before, they will be flexible with allowing you to see something else if traveling alone. Hotels are taken care of each night, the same driver stayed with me throughout the tour, and a different english speaking guide met with me in each city to add their knowledge of the area. One thing I would advise caution about is that throughout my trip I was pressured to buy various items, which is fine, because many items are really neat that I cannot buy in my home country. However these types of encounters are maybe too often and if you are not careful you will start to buy everything. In India however you can haggle everything, so a good way to approach buying is to offer only 20% of the price they initially ask for and go from there. Maybe the only other thing I would say that could have been better on this tour was if more meals were included. I ended up needing to buy food from my hotel quite often other than breakfast, so that will add to your total costs in the end. Also I did think the middle day upon returning to Delhi could have included an extra stop or two in the city to see before going to the hotel. Overall though this was a great tour and great experience. Highly recommend to see a whole lot of great areas throughout northern India in a short amount of time, while learning about each place from guides, and having a dedicated driver with you the entire way.

Golden Triangle with Rishikesh (Yoga) Tour

Golden Triangle with Rishikesh (Yoga)

It was truly an experience of all the senses. I was able to see so many different thing and experience different activities. Our driver Sonu was very kind, courteous and professional, he always had ice cold water for us to dink each day. I liked the fact that the tour guides were from the cities we toured and very knowledgeable of all aspects of their city, and could answer all our questions. The accommodation were great and i loved the idea of spending last 3 days of the trip in a peaceful Yoga capital of the world Rishikesh near the Ganges.

Golden Triangle With Vrindavan & Haridwar & Rishikesh All including Tour

Golden Triangle With Vrindavan & Haridwar & Rishikesh All including

No words to say the whole about tour because the opportunity to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to India, where I was able to visit the famous Golden Triangle along with the holy cities of Vrindavan, Haridwar, and Rishikesh. It was truly a spiritual and cultural journey that left a lasting impression on me. The Golden Triangle, consisting of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, is a popular tourist circuit in India. It is known for its rich history, magnificent architecture, and vibrant culture. Our tour started in Delhi, where we explored the bustling streets, visited iconic landmarks such as the Red Fort and Jama Masjid, and tasted delicious street food. Next, we headed to Agra to witness the majestic Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The beauty and grandeur of this monument left me speechless. We also visited the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. From Agra, we traveled to the pink city of Jaipur, where we were greeted by the stunning Amer Fort. We also visited the City Palace, Hawa Mahal, and Jantar Mantar, all of which reflected the rich culture and heritage of Rajasthan. The next part of our journey took us to the holy city of Vrindavan, known for its association with Lord Krishna. The atmosphere here was serene and spiritual, with many temples and ashrams to visit. We participated in the evening aarti at the famous Banke Bihari temple and took a dip in the holy Yamuna river. Haridwar and Rishikesh, situated in the foothills of the Himalayas, were the highlights of our trip. These cities are considered to be the gateway to the spiritual land of Uttarakhand. We attended the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri ghat in Haridwar, which was a mesmerizing experience. In Rishikesh, we visited the famous Beatles Ashram, took a dip in the sacred Ganges river, and indulged in some adventure activities like river rafting and bungee jumping. The entire trip was well-organized, and our tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. The accommodations were comfortable and provided an authentic Indian experience. The food was also delicious, and we got to taste a variety of local dishes. Overall, the Golden Triangle with Vrindavan, Haridwar, and Rishikesh was an unforgettable experience. It was a perfect blend of history, culture, and spirituality. I highly recommend this trip to anyone looking to explore the diverse and beautiful country of India. It truly is a journey of a lifetime.

India yoga retreat reviews.

I have had a fantastic holiday in Rajasthan. The trip was very well organized and I liked the hotels, especially in Jhodpur with the swimming pool. also the one in Jaisalmer by Fifu, who is a very nice person. Hotel in Manawa was also very nice. The most beautiful places for me were Jaisalmer, Udaipur and Veranasi. It was very comfortable for me to know you were always reachable, especially because I was travelling alone. I have had friendly and good drivers. I'm very happy with my trip and will recommend getsholidays, have a nice evening
Wow! I have no words... This was a dream come true and highly recommend if you want to experience the beauty of northern India. I was a little nervous about travelling solo to a country outside of Europe for the first time, however the tour guides and taxi driver made me feel safe and they all went above and beyond for me to have a fun-filled experience.

The Hatha style concentrates mainly on meditation and Pranayama breathing techniques and no excessive or strenuous exercise or asanas. The focus is on the slow building up of physical capacity. This complete body and mind experience is aimed at improving your health and total well-being. This kind of yoga is accessible to all and is light so as to support the treatment process.

3. Osho Meditation Tour

Hatha yoga

Osho introduced something totally unknown to hatha yoga. The body must go through a catharsis first. To bring about this catharsis, a new science was launched by Osho, because this suppression is something new. If hatha is taught to a person who is not totally involved in it – who only comes to do hatha yoga once or twice, or even for an hour a day, but who is involved for twenty-three hours a day in quite a different world, a work that is quite the contrary – it is not going to help much. The very method is a monastic method.

The 10 Best Life-Changing Yoga Retreats In India

The birthplace of yoga.

The ‘source’, as it’s often called among yoga communities.

We’re talking about India, of course; and with such a rich yogic history, this inspiring — if sometimes confronting — country is an easy choice for an authentic yoga retreat.

Yoga retreats in India come in all shapes and sizes. From laid back beach vibes to intensive study in a traditional ashram, there’s something here to suit everyone.

Why choose India as a yoga retreat destination?

Do you want…

  • A huge choice of great teachers in incredible locations — from bustling and colorful cities, to serene and silent mountain retreats?
  • To absorb the history of yoga as you move through your practice; and even as you walk down the street, or sit down to your evening meal?
  • To enjoy delicious local food, or immerse yourself in the yogic lifestyle with an Ayurvedic diet?
  • The freedom to choose a style of retreat that suits you; whether you’re looking for something profound and intensive, or a relaxed yoga holiday?
  • A retreat that doesn’t cost the earth — because of cost of living (and the cost of yoga) in India is lower than in many popular yoga destinations
  • Sunshine, new experiences, and the chance to encounter different ways of life?

India offers all of this and much more!

Where To Book Your Yoga Retreat?

Breathing Travel recommends two reliable and trustworthy websites:

India’s popular yoga spots

India is dotted with cities and rural areas known for yoga.

Some of the top destinations for yogi travelers include:

  • Rishikesh:  for its peaceful mountain atmosphere, awe-inspiring scenery, and teachers who are alive with the traditional wisdom of Indian yoga
  • Goa: for its vibrant beach towns and villages, endless opportunities for swimming (and sunbathing), and laid back, friendly retreat centers
  • Kerala: for its spiritual history, beaches and palm trees, and eclectic backwaters that are home to incredible wildlife

What is the most popular yoga in India?

Different forms of yoga are practised all over India, and just as yoga has evolved throughout the rest of the world, it has done so in its birth country too.

But perhaps the most popular style of yoga in India is Iyengar Yoga.

The founder of this precise form of practice was B.K.S. Iyengar, was born in Bellur — in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka.

B.K.S. Iyengar was taught yoga by Guru Sri T. Krishnamacharya, who is generally accepted as the inventor of modern yoga .

But Krishnamacharya’s intense yoga practice just didn’t work for Iyengar’s body — and it inspired him to create his own style, with the use of lots of props.

If you’ve ever been to an Iyengar class you’ll know it involves lots of blocks, straps, blankets, and even harnesses hanging from the walls.

Iyengar then brought Iyengar Yoga to the west and became a globally renowned yoga teacher and scholar.

His legacy lives on all over the world, including in India; where his teachings are widely used today.

  • What to Expect During a Yoga Retreat

For travelers who enjoy yoga and want to better understand this ancient practice, there is no better place to go than India.

In this article, we will explain everything you need to know about doing yoga in India from the differences between western and Indian yoga to where to go, the best retreats, and what to expect from an ashram experience.

But, no matter how you choose to practice yoga in India, one thing is for sure: your experience here will change you for the better and help you reach new heights within your practice.

Why You Should Experience Yoga in India

Over the last 20 years, yoga has spread from South Asia to the rest of the world and has become a popular way to exercise in almost every country. So, if every country does yoga, why should you go to India to experience it?

The answer is that yoga is simply different in India . It is hard to describe how, but we would say that the way people practice and teach yoga is more pure, organic, and spiritual in the country in which it was created.

If you need more convincing, here are 3 reasons why you should experience yoga in India.

1. Indian yoga and western yoga are not the same

In the west, there is a disconnect between practicing yoga and its true purpose and meaning. This is because when yoga was introduced to the west it was changed in order to better appeal to western culture which yearned for an exercise method that gave quick results and had a specific end goal.

Today, for many people in the west, yoga is a great form of exercise and is often practiced using workout-style quick flows intended to make you sweat.

This is not how yoga is practiced in India . Indians don't see yoga as a physical practice that has an end goal. Although there is a physical aspect to yoga in India, it is just one part of a larger ideology.

In reality, Indian yoga is part of a complete lifestyle that includes how you treat others, what you eat, and how you respect the world around you. The purpose of the asanas , or poses, in Indian yoga is to relax your mind and prepare it for meditation where you can search for inner peace and happiness.

2. Discover ancient tools to find contentment and spiritual balance

Yoga has been documented as a practice in India since the 7th century BCE. The longterm success of yoga is due to the fact that its methods truly help people clear emotional and physical blockages . The goal of yoga is to bring peace and contentment to your mind and better connect it to your body.

That being said, yoga is a complicated process that is learned through the journey of a person's life. In order to get the tools to find this spiritual balance, it is best to have a skilled teacher which is why so many yoga practitioners are heading to India today.

In India, you will learn about the 8 different tools , or steps, of yoga including ethical guidelines and principles, postures and movements, breathing techniques, ability to look inward, concentration, meditation, and the ultimate goal of yoga: fulfillment.

3. India is a great place for all yoga lovers whether beginner or advanced

Indian yoga is not about who can do the best headstand or tree pose but is instead focused on the spiritual journey and your personal progress. Because of this, India is a great place to practice yoga no matter your level.

There are plenty of yoga retreats and ashrams in India that have specific courses for beginners and there is no need to worry about being considered "not good enough". The only requirement for yoga in India is sincerity and a desire to improve.

India is also perfect for advanced yoga practicers who are skilled in postures and mindfulness but just need that extra help and concentration to bring their practice to the next level. Advanced practicers will benefit greatly from experienced gurus who have spent decades mastering the craft.

Yoga is not a physical practice but a spiritual one and how good you are at yoga is not measured by the number and difficulty of your postures but rather by how it positively affects your life and relationships with others.

Most gurus describe yoga as a spiritual science that's purpose is to quiet your mind and better connect it to your body. Once your mind and body are connected, you can explore your inner self more deeply and understand more about what your body truly needs.

Because yoga has been practiced in India for over a thousand years, many different schools of thought and types of yoga have been developed. Here, we will describe the types of traditional yoga that are often taught in India.

Many of the newer types of yoga that are popular in the west such as hot yoga are not included because they are untraditional and are not often practiced in India.

Hatha yoga is a general term that includes all types of yoga that teach physical postures or asanas along with breathing exercises or pranayama . The goal of hatha yoga is to relax your body and mind in order to prepare for other spiritual practices like meditation.

Most yoga that is taught in the West is hatha yoga. Hatha yoga can vary a lot from teacher to teacher but in general, it starts slowly and is great for beginners who want a more relaxed yoga style where each pose is held for a longer period of time.

Vinyasa is also a general yoga term that describes any type of practice that includes rapid flows and continuous movement from one posture to the next. Synchronized breathing is also another important part of vinyasa yoga.

The constant flow of poses along with inhales and exhales often helps new students be mindful and focus on the practice instead of letting their thoughts wander.

Ashtanga yoga is based on ancient yoga teachings and involves a series of postures similar to vinyasa yoga. However, in Ashtanga yoga, the same poses are always performed in the exact same order and each pose gets progressively more difficult.

This type of yoga is often physically demanding and causes internal heat which helps detoxify your muscles and internal organs.

Iyengar yoga was started by B.K.S. Iyengar who has become one of the most famous yoga gurus in modern times. The main difference between Iyengar yoga and other types is that Iyengar focuses on the small details of every posture.

Poses are often held for longer in Iyengar yoga than in other forms and participants are asked to pay close attention to the alignment of their muscles in each pose.

Sivananda yoga was created by Swami Sivananda and is a type of hatha yoga. Sivananda yoga classes often begin with a relaxation pose followed by a sun salutation and then the class goes through Sivananda's 12 postures.

Full-length Sivananda classes also often include chanting and meditation.

Kundalini yoga incorporates many parts of yoga including repeated movements and postures, breathing techniques, chanting, mantras, and meditation. What makes Kundalini yoga different is that the purpose of the practice is to awaken the energy at the base of a person's spine and draw it through the seven chakras.

This type of yoga uses repetitive breathing and movements to move energy through the body.

Best Yoga Destinations in India

In India, there are certain cities that are yoga hubs. These cities often contain many yoga retreats and ashrams and have a long history of influential yoga teachers and students.

Here are some of the top cities in India to experience yoga.

1. Rishikesh

Rishikesh is located in Uttarkhand near the Himalayas and is often referred to as the 'Yoga Capital of the World'. The practice of yoga is thought to have originated in the Himalayas and the closer you get to the mountains, the more traditional the yoga will be.

Rishikesh is home to many gurus and teachers and is a great place to study yoga, meditation, and spirituality. Rishikesh is also a beautiful destination surrounded by nature and located in the mountains.

Many ashrams in Rishikesh are quite formal and students there follow a strict schedule and diet.

Every year, thousands of people travel to Mysore to study yoga and the city has become the most popular place for foreigners to learn yoga in India after Rishikesh.

Mysore first became famous due to the K Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute which was founded in 1948 by Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois. Mysore is often regarded as the home of Ashtanga yoga and has seen many of the 20th century's most influential yoga teachers.

Kerala is the perfect place for travelers who are interested in practicing yoga and learning about Ayurveda, India's 5000-year-old traditional medicine. In Kerala, most yoga retreats combine the two into a spiritual and health awakening.

Here you can deepen your yoga practice and received Ayurvedic treatments to help heal your body and bring it back into balance.

Keralan yoga often combines hatha yoga with Kalari which is a form of ancient warrior yoga done to enhance the spiritual powers of soldiers.

4. Varanasi

Varanasi is a 3000-year-old city that has a long tradition of yoga and is often considered to be the most spiritual place in India. Here you can join in with the locals as they stand on the shores of the Ganges to perform sun salutations and then deepen your practice in one of the city's many yoga retreats.

Yoga in Varanasi is steeped in spiritual tradition and discovery.

Traditionally, Goa has not been a popular center for yoga as the majority of the local population is not Hindu, Buddhist, or Jain.

In recent years, Goa has transformed into a great location for yoga students as more and more retreats have popped up to meet demand. Yoga in a Goan retreat is often more relaxed and not as strict as in some of the more traditional Hindu cities.

Here you can casually study yoga and search for inner peace while laying on the beach or swimming in the cool Arabian Sea.

How to Experience Yoga in India

Yoga in India can be experienced in many forms and at many different levels of intensity.

Travelers who want to experience a couple of quick yoga classes can find reputable courses offered at many 4 and 5-star hotels. While these classes can't guarantee the intense soul searching that other programs provide, they are a great way to experience traditional Indian yoga and learn more about the true purpose of the practice.

Travelers who want a more in-depth yoga experience can spend a day at a yoga center . During this time, guests will be able to deepen their understanding of yoga and gain some of the important tools to begin their spiritual journey.

Travelers who really want to achieve a new balance and awakening can spend time in a yoga retreat or ashram . On the retreat, you will take courses taught by experienced yoga masters and truly begin to understand the depth of yoga and your practice.

There are many different types of yoga retreats that are available in India. It is important to do a lot of research before booking a yoga retreat to make sure that you are choosing one that aligns with your goals.

In general, there are two main categories of yoga retreats including the stricter retreats or ashrams and the more relaxed yoga holiday retreats.

Some yoga retreats can be referred to as ashrams. Ashrams offer yoga students and spiritual learners a place where they can relax in quiet and solitude while learning from an experienced yogi or teacher.

Ashrams are best for yoga students who are very serious about their practice . If you want to stay in an ashram, you will likely be required to follow a strict schedule that includes early morning activities, meditation, yoga classes, simple meals, and an early bedtime.

Ashrams are meant to be a place that allows you to take a break from your normal responsibilities and live a simple life while spending your time looking inward. These yoga retreats are often located away from popular tourist destinations in a remote and quiet place surrounded by nature.

Rooms in ashrams are often very simple and definitely won't be as comfortable as a hotel. Students at the ashram often follow a strict yoga diet which includes simple vegetarian meals made from locally grown food.

Yoga Holidays

Yoga holiday retreats are best for people who are interested in yoga but want to relax and enjoy their vacation while deepening their spiritual understanding. Yoga holidays normally take place in a hotel or resort with comfortable rooms and restaurants that offer a variety of meal choices.

Yoga holidays also follow a much more relaxed schedule and allow students to miss their classes, wake up late, and leave the resort to explore nearby tourist areas. Most yoga holiday packages include two yoga classes a day and the rest of the time can be spent enjoying other spiritual classes or relaxing in nature.

The best places to go for yoga holidays are Goa and Kerala. Goa specializes in yoga holidays with beach relaxation while Kerala has yoga holidays in beautiful jungle towns with the addition or Ayurvedic massages and other treatments.

If you are someone who wants the more serious style of yoga retreat where you only focus on deepening your practice and attaining spiritual balance, then here are some great ashrams to look into:

1. Parmarth Niketan

Location: Rishikesh, Uttarkhand

Located on an 8-acre campus in the hills of the Himalayas near Rishikesh, Parmarth Niketan is a wonderful place to study yoga while surrounded by peaceful nature.

This ashram has 1,000 rooms and offers programs on beginner yoga, spirituality, Vedic heritage, and yoga teacher training. The ashram is particularly famous for its week-long Yoga Festival that it puts on every year in March.

2. Yoga Vidya Mandiran

This ashram is perfect for people who not only want to learn about yoga but are also interested in the entire lifestyle that comes with it. Here, you will take classes on meditation, breathing techniques, philosophy, and mantra.

The ashram also offers programs that teach many different styles of yoga including Hatha, Vinyasa, and Ashtanga.

Here you will get basic but comfortable accommodation, simple vegetarian meals, and opportunities to visit nearby temples or go for hikes in the mountains.

3. Krishnamachar Yoga Shala

Location: Mysore, Karnataka

Krishnamachar Yoga Shala is a great ashram for those who are looking for an intense yoga training and spiritual experience. This ashram is dedicated to teaching all aspects of yoga including meditation, chanting, Ayurveda, and Ashtanga and only accepts students who register for at least one month of class at the ashram.

Krishnamachar Yoga Shala is particularly famous as the teaching location of the oldest living teacher of Ashtanga yoga, BNS Iyengar.

4. Bodhi Ayurveda and Yoga Retreat

Location: Kochi, Kerala

Bodhi Yoga Retreat is an ashram that offers students a 10-day yoga retreat that includes daily cleansing Kundalini poses, yoga and meditation, and Ayurvedic treatments. Here, students receive personal recommendations from an Ayurvedic doctor on the ideal diet and exercise for your body's needs.

For travelers who are looking for a yoga experience that is combined with a more relaxed schedule and a vacation atmosphere, then here are some great recommendations for yoga holidays to try:

1. Ashiyana Yoga Retreat

Location: Mandrem, Goa

Goa is the perfect place to go to combine yoga and meditation with a relaxing beach holiday. Ashiyana Yoga Retreat is located on Mandrem Beach and is surrounded by tropical gardens.

Ashiyana is not a yoga ashram, but rather a beautiful boutique resort that includes a swimming pool, comfortable rooms, and a restaurant that offers great-tasting and healthy food.

Besides yoga, you can also participate in many spiritual classes and workshops or spend some time getting massages at the spa.

2. Little Cove Yoga Holiday Retreat

Location: Cola, Goa

Little Cove Yoga Holiday Retreat is located on the secluded Cola Beach in Goa and is surrounded by a peaceful palm grove. This retreat is special because the classes here are taught by an Indian Yogi who has a diploma in Ashtanga yoga.

The retreat offers two beachfront yoga classes a day, organic vegetarian meals, a complimentary cooking class, and some Ayurvedic treatment options.

3. Namaste Ayurvedic Wellness Centre

Location: Chalakudy Village, Kerala

Located in Chalakudy Village in the Western Ghat Mountains, Namaste Ayurvedic Wellness Centre is the perfect place to escape for some yoga, spiritual exploration, and healing.

This resort welcomes all yoga-lovers whether they are beginner or advanced and offers meditation and yoga courses, a consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor, herbal baths and massages, and delicious Keralan vegetarian food.

4. Ananda in the Himalayas

Location: Narendra Nagar, Uttarakhand

Ananda is a great choice for travelers who are looking for luxury. Ananda consistently rates as one of the top luxury spas and yoga retreats in India because of its incredible service, classes, and comfort.

Ananda is located on 100 acres of land belonging to the palace estate of the local maharaja with accommodation that matches the princely and luxurious vibe. This resort offers yoga and meditation classes, luxurious massages, and aromatic spa baths.

What to Expect During a Yoga Retreat in India

Variety of Retreats and Ashrams: When you are trying to find the yoga retreat that matches your personal goals, you are likely to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of options. It is important to do a lot of research before making a final decision in order to ensure the retreat is the correct one for you and that it is also a legitimate yoga retreat.

What to Wear: Unlike yoga in the West, yoga in India is not about tight spandex pants and strappy sports bras. In India, you'll be more comfortable wearing loose long pants and a comfortable T-shirt. In serious ashrams, yoga pants may be considered inappropriate and will likely be uncomfortable.

Food: Because it fits with the principles of yoga, most yoga retreats serve fresh and organic vegetarian dishes. If you attend a serious yoga ashram, you can expect meals to be very simple but also nourishing for your body and mind.

Length of Retreat: Yoga retreats vary greatly in the length of their packages. Some of the more serious ashrams require that participants stay for at least one month. Other ashrams offer packages of 5 or 10 days. At yoga holiday resorts, there is often no requirement for how long you must stay.

Indian Travel Visa for Yoga Students

Almost everyone will need to apply for a visa in order to travel to India. People who come to India as a yoga student can apply for an Indian tourist visa. On the online tourist visa form, there is even an option to mark "studying yoga" under your reason for your trip.

We recommend applying for the Indian E-visa on the official website . It is also possible to get a visa on arrival, but E-visas often allow for easier planning and are less of a hassle at the airport.

yoga tours to india

It was a whirlwind across a number of cities, but a very comprehensive experience across the many sides and cultures of China. Most days had sufficient activities, but weren’t overwhelming, which was great.Across cities, we had excellent tour guides, like Kitty (Beijing), Jenny (Xian), William (Guilin/Yangshuo), Kris (Shanghai), and Tony (Yellow Mountains.)

yoga tours to india

From the time we landed in Beijing until we left, we were well taken care of. My wife and I had Lily Liu as our guide and she was amazing. From arranging visits to all the different sights, to teaching us the history, it was fantastic.

The tour was excellent. Selinda was very knowledgeable about all the aspects of our tour. Selinda was very interesting and knew so much Chinese history

We made a private tour through South China in January 2024. Altogether Chengdu was the highlight. We had an incredible day at Emeishan. In Chengdu our guidewas Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We highly recommend to go to Chengdu for 3 days when visiting China, especially with Helen.

Other highlights are too many to mention but here are a few Ken taking us to the Terracotta Warriors and our food tour in Xian was amazing,

Our day volunteering at the Panda Base was truly unforgettable. Helen, our guide, provided us with invaluable insights about Chengdu and the pandas, enriching our tour with her knowledge and expertise. We're grateful to Helen for accompanying us throughout the day and showcasing the highlights of China.

We had a booking with China Highlights through Silvia Ye who guarenteed a perfect organisation. In Chengdu our guide was Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We highly recommend to go to Chengdu for 3 days when visiting China, especially with Helen.

We traveled to China during the Chinese new year and we had Kris as our guide and he is simply knowledgeable, helpful and great.

We visited Guilin for 2 days and stayed in the Guilin Waterfall hotel. Guilin was absolutely beautiful! Our guide, William, was very knowledgeable and kind! He taught us so much about Guilin and the surrounding area! We really enjoyed trying the specialty rice noodles of Guilin. Our highlight was the Li river cruise.

Amazing tour and the guide Mr. 贺霄 was very accommodating with our needs and request as we have bought our 2 years old with us. Well explained for all the place we visited. Any additional cost were informed well ahead and didn't felt any pressure if we opt not to go for additional detour. The trip was relaxing/ laid back/no rushing with zero shopping!

Yoga & Wellness Tour

Yoga & Wellness Tours

A unique mix of Indian culture, history and wellness....

  • Indian Heritage
  • Yoga & Wellness Tour

yoga tours to india

Have you ever wanted to marvel at temples, forts and palaces; go shopping for unique gifts; ride elephants; eat and learn how to cook traditional Indian cuisines; experience yoga and tranquillity; and be consumed by all that is Indian? All of this, and more, is possible on yoga retreats in India.

  • At Delhi, enjoy the delights of the capital of India. The grandeur of the different empires will leave you spell bound. At Agra, the city that is the epitome of love, soak in the royal romance of an Emperor for his wife. At Jaipur, let the musical beats of the folk music transport you to the era of regal Rajputs of Rajasthan .
  • At Rishikesh, learn the skills that help you tackle the complexities caused by a demanding lifestyle. Return to the World, born again.

With our yoga trips to India, you are given the opportunity to do a little sightseeing before your arrival at the yoga and wellness retreat at Rishikesh. This is the perfect way to relax and find balance in your life, as well as to see some of the more famous sights that India has to offer.

Many wellness trips in India allow you to partake in Ayurveda, which sees medicine and diet as complementary (rather than separate) entities. If you are experiencing a particular health problem, Ayurveda will help you to identify activities, conditions, herbs and foods to get healthy again.

Our private guided yoga tours to Rishikesh take you to the Ananda Resort, located in the tranquil foothills of the Himalayas. There are a variety of different rooms to choose from, each offering stunning views of the Palace and valley.

The spa itself has a focus on the traditional Indian practices of yoga and Ayurveda (which is why many people choose luxury tours of India in the first place), as well as a menu of more than 80 body and beauty treatments. Ananda yoga teaches the techniques of the Bihar School (also known as Satyananda).

The food enjoyed on Rishikesh yoga tours is fresh and natural – think whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and low fat dairy products. On yoga tours in India, you will also learn how to prepare this food at home.

Rishikesh tours also offer guests ample opportunity to experience health and wellness activities, including: a gym, sauna, swimming pool, golf course, cooking classes, Vedanta lectures, treks and nature walks.

Start - New Delhi

Rishikesh, India

Trying to come up with the perfect itinerary to fit your time frame—and not sure where to start, given India’s vastness? Here, Chandresh Bhardwaj, author of Break the Norms , and a seventh-generation spiritual teacher in New York and Los Angeles who leads multiple retreats in his homeland of India each year, shares his top picks for the holy cities, historical sites, and spiritual pilgrimages every student of yoga should consider.

Holy Cities

This lesser-known holy city, formerly called Allahabad and renamed in late 2018 by a new government trying to build a more spiritual India, is located at the confluence of the Ganges, the Yamuna, and the mythical Sarasvati Saraswati rivers. When the Kumbh Mela festival happens here (most recently in January 2019), it’s the largest: Up to 150 million pilgrims will travel from across the country and the world, and wait for days to bathe in the holy river.

The Ganges—or Ganga, considered a living goddess—descends from its source in the Himalayas, called Gomukh, to the north Indian plains in Haridwar before making its way across the country and pouring into the Bay of Bengal. That’s why this city’s name means “gateway to god” and has been a center of Hindu religion and mysticism since ancient times. In Hindu mythology, Haridwar is also one of the four sites where drops of amrit, the elixir of immortality, accidentally spilled over from the celestial bird Garuda’s pitcher. This manifested in the Kumbh Mela, a religious festival that’s celebrated four times over the course of 12 years at four different pilgrimage sites, including Haridwar. Even when this famous festival isn’t happening, you can experience nightly Ganga Aarti ceremonies here.

A pilgrim visits the Ganges in Varanasi, India

One of the oldest inhabited cities on Earth, Varanasi is also one of India’s holiest. Walk on the river’s banks, and you’ll hear the near-constant clanging of puja ceremonial bells and see the flicker of lamps illuminating the holy river at night. You’ll also see pilgrims bathing—and a maze of funeral pyres, where bodies burn along Varanasi’s cremation ghat, or river bank. “This is a city where death is honored, welcomed, and celebrated in a sacred way,” Bhardwaj says. “Many Indians believe that if the right rituals are done at the time of their death, they’ll achieve the ultimate goal—liberation of the constant cycle of being born, suffering, and going through the drama of living—if their body is burned or their ashes are scattered in Varanasi.”

Want to practice in the footsteps of the ancient yogis? Rishikesh, considered by many to be the yoga capital of India—of the world, really—is where yoga, tantra, and mantras were created, Bhardwaj says. “There’s such powerful energy here that even if you don’t practice asana or meditation and just keep yourself receptive and open, big things can happen,” he says. On the banks of the holy river Ganges you’ll find ashrams, temples, and shops, as well as a diverse, international group of spiritual seekers. When you’re there, don’t miss Ganga Aarti, a fire ceremony at the sacred bank called Triveni Ghat.

Pilgrimages

The Ganges, also known as Ma Ganga, is the most revered, sacred river in Hindu lore. When Ma Ganga was asked to descend to Earth from the heavens, she was insulted, so she decided to sweep away everything in her path with her waters once she reached the terrestrial plain. In order to protect the Earth from Ma Ganga’s force, Lord Shiva sat in the Himalayan mountain town of Gangotri and caught the powerful river in his hair, saving the Earth from cracking open. Thanks to Shiva, Ma Ganga’s celestial, purifying waters then flowed through India, and the devout travel to her banks to wash away sins and find salvation. A multi-day trek to Gomukh—the Gangotri Glacier that is the site of Ma Ganga’s headwaters—is the ultimate pilgrimage, Bhardwaj says.

This north Indian town nestled in the Himalayas is where Lord Shiva is believed to have meditated. Pilgrims make the 11-mile uphill trek to the Kedarnath Temple—which, due to extreme weather conditions, is open only from the end of April to early November—to worship him. “Passionate yogis who meditate there for a while often experience intense energies,” Bhardwaj says.

Himachal Pradesh, India

Himachal Pradesh

This northern Indian state in the foothills of the Himalayas is home to countless goddess temples and monasteries, Bhardwaj says, as well as the 14th Dalai Lama’s monastery, where he currently lives and gives public discourses. “It’s an especially interesting place because of the combination of Hindu and Buddhist traditions,” Bhardwaj says.

Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Vishnu, one of the Hindu triad of gods along with Shiva and Brahma, is also one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites. Visiting the char dhams, which means “four abodes”—Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri, and Rameswaram—is something every Hindu must do during his or her lifetime, Bhardwaj says. “I think of Badrinath as the little brother of Kedarnath,” he says. “While Kedarnath is the homeland of Shiva, and has this intense energy as a result, Badrinath radiates a more holy, more Hindu energy.”

Historical Sites

Taj Mahal in India

One of the most recognized monuments in existence, this mausoleum is also one of the seven wonders of the world—and a must-see when making the trek to India. Located in Agra (part of India’s popular Golden Triangle circuit, which also includes Delhi and Jaipur), the marble monument was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan to house the tomb of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It took 22 years and 20,000 workers to complete—and cost the equivalent of approximately $800 million today. While this UNESCO World Heritage Site will undoubtedly be crowded when you go (a whopping 7 to 8 million tourists visit each year), it’s well worth seeing.

This town, located in the northeastern state of Rajasthan, is set on Pushkar Lake, a sacred Hindu site where pilgrims bathe along its ghats. It’s also home to the only temple of Brahma, the Hindu god known as the creator of the world, Bhardwaj says. “This is one of my all-time favorite places in India,” he says.

Hampi, Karnataka

The remains of more than 1,600 monuments are scattered over the 16-square-mile area of this UNESCO World Heritage site, which is the former capital of the Vijayanagar empire (in power from the 14th to 16th centuries). Amid the elegant ruins of medieval Indian culture, you’ll also find humbler shrines expressing the local villagers’ heartfelt devotion to Rama, Sita, and Hanuman. This area is the legendary Kishkinda, realm of the monkey gods, where Rama, one of the most widely worshipped Hindu deities, is said to have met the monkey god Hanuman on his quest to rescue his kidnapped wife, the goddess Sita.

Important Places for Yoga

Mysore, India

Located in the southwestern state of Karnataka, this former capital of the Kingdom of Mysore is home to the opulent Mysore Palace and centuries-old Devaraja Market. Yoga students may know it as the birthplace of Ashtanga Yoga, where the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute was established in 1948 and where Ashtanga practitioners from all over the world travel to practice and train.

B.K.S. Iyengar was born in 1918 in Bellur, a city that was in the grip of the influenza pandemic at the time. An attack left Iyengar sick throughout his childhood, and when he was 16 years old, his brother-in-law—Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya—asked him to come to Mysore to help with the family. There, Iyengar started to learn asana, which steadily helped his health improve. In 1936, Krishnamacharya sent Iyengar to Pune to spread the teaching of yoga. Now, Pune is home to the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute—which Iyengar opened in 1975, and is considered the heart and soul of Iyengar Yoga. Iyengar students from all over the world come here to practice and train with the institute’s esteemed teachers.

yoga tours to india

By Saumya Roy Photographs by Atul Loke

Saumya Roy, a Mumbai-based author, has written a book about the city’s wealth, poverty and the waste pickers who make their living in its landfill.

Mumbai appears as much a dream as a city. Sprinkled with the stardust of Bollywood, the Hindi-language film industry that bases itself here, and studded with billionaires , India’s hyperkinetic metropolis, known as Bombay until 1995, feels like a place where anything is possible. But over the years, the city’s reality has been one of crumbling infrastructure, unmoving traffic and unending slums. Amid tight pandemic lockdowns, Mumbai turned into one of the world’s great construction sites , trying to remake itself with new towers, subway lines and bridges . Take in the dizzying juxtapositions — while discovering experimental performances in former textile mills and serene, ancient caves a short drive from the urban chaos — in a city guaranteed to look different again the next time you visit.

Recommendations

  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya , a sprawling and immaculately kept museum, houses a trove of Hindu, Jain and Buddhist sculptures.
  • The Bombay Poetry Crawl offers a walking tour through one of Mumbai’s most rapidly gentrifying areas and traces the city’s working-class roots through poetry.
  • The Kanheri Caves are an ancient Buddhist complex of more than 100 caves, some dating back as far as 2,000 years, in Sanjay Gandhi National Park . Some of the caves have pillared prayer halls and serene, carved Buddhist deities.
  • G5A , an arts center housed in part of a former textile mill, hosts music, film screenings, poetry readings and performances.
  • The Afghan Church , formally known as the Church of St. John the Evangelist, is a newly restored 19th-century house of worship that serves as a poignant memorial for fallen Indian and British soldiers.
  • Mani Bhavan , the former home of Mohandas K. Gandhi, is now a museum that preserves details of his spartan life, underscoring his emphasis on self-reliance.
  • Moghal Masjid , a Shiite mosque built in 1860, is known for its intricate blue tile work.
  • Hasnabad Dargah , known as Mumbai’s Taj Mahal for its resemblance to that celebrated monument, is a milky-white mausoleum that evokes calm in the middle of the city.
  • Magen David Synagogue is a large historic temple, painted sky blue, in the Byculla neighborhood.
  • Stroll by murals of Bollywood stars in Bandra , a coastal neighborhood of old Portuguese bungalows and celebrity homes.
  • Masque is a high-end restaurant that reinvents traditional Indian dishes in modern, surprising ways over a nine-course tasting menu.
  • Kala Ghoda Cafe serves healthy breakfasts, including spicy egg dishes.
  • Swati Snacks , a Mumbai institution, offers street-food classics and traditional favorites in a bright, clean setting.
  • Aaswad Upahar and Mithai Griha is a popular, no-frills restaurant in the Dadar neighborhood that offers a mango-themed thali (a platter filled with various small dishes) in April and May, when the fruit is in season.
  • Bastian at the Top , a sceney rooftop restaurant with lavish décor that includes an indoor swimming pool, is worth a stop to take in the views of the bay over a drink.
  • Moonray , a newly opened women’s wear store, brings together immaculate European cuts and handmade embroidery from Mumbai.
  • Payal Khandwala sells silk tops, sharply cut suits and trench coats in bold-colored Indian fabric.
  • Ogaan showcases a range of local designers whose garments include ornate Indian wedding wear and silk shirts.
  • Kitab Khana has a large and well-curated selection of books on Indian literature, politics and Gandhian thought, set in a building that is more than a century old.
  • Induri Saree Centre sells glittering, traditional saris in a candy-box-size store.
  • The Taj Mahal Palace , an ornate hotel open since 1903, looks over the Arabian Sea and the historic Gateway of India arch. A memorial in the lobby commemorates the terror attack at the hotel in 2008. Rooms start at 23,550 rupees, or about $282.
  • Sea Green Hotel , on the curved, lit-up shoreline called the Queen’s Necklace, has basic rooms with gorgeous bay views. Rooms start at around 9,000 rupees.
  • The Grand Hotel is a century-old establishment in the city’s historic Ballard Estate district, an area that is also home to one of Mumbai’s best-known Parsi restaurants, Britannia & Co. You can also walk to many of the city’s well-known attractions. Rooms start at around 6,850 rupees.
  • Traveling in Mumbai’s packed trains is fast, efficient and an experience like no other. Millions travel on the local trains every year, and vendors and singers walk through compartments (25 rupees for a first-class single ticket). Black-and-yellow cabs , which use meters with fixed rates, and ride-hailing apps like Uber are readily available. Mumbai’s red buses also offer a breezy, scenic and cheap way to get around the city (from 5 rupees per trip).

People stand in a semi-circle on a leafy street reading from a stapled paper booklet.

See spindly chimneys rising amid luxury hotels and condos in the jagged skyline of Lower Parel, a rapidly gentrifying precinct in central Mumbai. The chimneys are relics of the area’s former textile mills, which began slowly being redeveloped into malls after a worker strike in the 1980s. Trace Mumbai’s working-class roots here with the writer Saranya Subramanian, who leads the Bombay Poetry Crawl (600 rupees, or about $7), a series of walking tours conducted through the lens of poetry and local history. During the tour, Ms. Subramanian reads poetry by workers and encourages participants to read, too. She leads the tour monthly and also hosts a range of other poetry walks in the city, including one on a local train. Check her Instagram page, @thebombaypoetrycrawl , for scheduling.

A person with long hair performs to a small crowd using a microphone and a laptop. A spotlight shines on the performer, and the crowd is washed in a red light.

Take a car to the nearby G5A , a cultural center housed in a repurposed textile mill compound. Trees grow out of the stone walls of a neighboring former mill , and skyscrapers rise, seemingly by the minute, on the other side. Catch a show at G5A, which hosts edgy art performances, movie screenings and discussions in its small theater, or on its terrace, with the moon glowing through the Mumbai haze. Recent shows include a poetry reading by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Forrest Gander, along with the celebrated Indian poet Arvind Krishna Mehrotra; Norwegian and Bangalorean jazz bands; and a Kashmiri film. Tickets from 250 to 700 rupees.

A close-up of a person pouring a liquid from a stone vessel into a crunchy, puffed snack with a hole in the center.

Walk next door, still within the mill compound, to the high-ceilinged and warmly lit Masque , a restaurant that reinvents traditional Indian dishes across a nine-course tasting menu (5,200 rupees per person). It takes puran poli and amti, for instance, a sweet, lentil-filled flatbread and side of spicy coconut dal that is often eaten during Mumbai festivals, and remixes it as a bite-size chickpea tart with a hint of jaggery (Indian raw sugar), filled with green peas or crab and topped with coconut foam. Pav, a ubiquitous Mumbai bread bun with a crackly top and slightly sweet, dense interior, acquires a croissant-like, buttery texture here — dip it into a silky morel or lamb curry. Cap off the meal with a popsicle made with unlikely layers of Indian pickle, mulberry and white chocolate. Vegetarian menus available.

A street that is busy with pedestrians and lined with shopfronts. The facade of a building that faces the street appears to be old and rundown.

Trace Mumbai’s working-class roots in Lower Parel with the Bombay Poetry Crawl, a series of walking tours conducted through the lens of poetry and local history.

A close-up of a stained glass window depicting a man in a red robe kneeling in prayer.

Walk through the soft-colored shadows cast by stained-glass windows in the Church of St. John the Evangelist, more commonly known as the Afghan Church , which reopened in March after a two-year renovation. The building, in the leafy Navy Nagar, a naval area at the southern tip of Mumbai, was completed in 1858 and commemorates the more than 4,500 Indian and British soldiers who died during the first Anglo-Afghan war, including in its disastrous retreat from Kabul. The church is also known for multifaith prayers, Indian classical music concerts and a midnight Mass at Christmas. Entry is free.

A plate of scrambled eggs, buttered toast and half a roasted tomato rests on a table. A cup of coffee with steamed milk is visible in the background on the same table.

Kala Ghoda Cafe

Dig into a breakfast of akuri, a spicy scrambled egg dish (345 rupees) that is traditional in India’s Parsi community, at Kala Ghoda Cafe , in the Kala Ghoda neighborhood. Then walk to the sprawling Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya , a museum with manicured lawns and a Gothic-style building topped with a bulbous dome. As part of “ Ancient Sculptures ,” showing through October, chiseled Greek gods and Egyptian deities from the British Museum and the J. Paul Getty Museum share space with Assyrian gods from CSMVS’s permanent collection. The museum’s permanent galleries are a trove of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain sculptures and also feature artifacts from the ancient Indus Valley civilization. Tickets, 150 rupees for Indian nationals; 700 rupees for foreigners.

A brightly lit store with white walls displays a long rack of clothing, including gingham skirts and tops, white shirts and denim apparel.

Stroll the Kala Ghoda neighborhood, starting with Artisans ’, a gallery and shop in a graffiti-covered building that showcases traditional Indian crafts. In the area’s ever-expanding fashion district, browse crisp white shirts with handmade lace collars (from around 9,500 rupees) at Moonray , a women’s fashion label and shop (its co-founder also runs the Chanakya School of Craft , which teaches women embroidery and collaborates with Dior). Also check out Payal Khandwala , which has silk tops (14,000 rupees), sharply cut suits and trench coats in bold-colored Indian fabric, and Ogaan , with heavily embellished wedding dresses, pleated dresses and more. Then walk to Kitab Khana , an independent bookstore in a more-than-century-old building with Corinthian columns in the nearby Fort district. Browse the well-curated selection of Indian literature and the books on history and Gandhian thought that line the high shelves.

People eat from bright-yellow plates in a sparsely decorated restaurant with diner-like seating and metallic table tops. A chalkboard on the wall lists menu items and says the name of the restaurant, "Swati Snacks."

Swati Snacks

A dizzying range of delicacies can be found on Mumbai’s khao gallis, a Hindi term for “food streets.” The safest way to try them all (and avoid tummy trouble) might be at Swati Snacks , a six-decade-old restaurant in the Tardeo area. Have the vada pav (175 rupees), like garlicky potato sliders, and the signature panki (230 rupees), a wispy rice pancake flavored with mint or dill that arrives steaming in a banana-leaf parcel. Then visit the nearby Mani Bhavan , a three-story building where Mohandas K. Gandhi, known as the father of the nation, often stayed; it is now a museum. Spinning wheels and floor seating in his preserved, spartan bedroom provide a window to his belief that the route to Indian independence could come only through discipline and self-reliance. Entry, 20 rupees.

A person wearing a collared shirt rests against a wall that features vibrant blue tiling in geometric patterns.

Moghal Masjid

Take a car to Byculla, the chaotic old quarter of Mumbai. Get a coffee (Americano, 228 rupees) at the Craftery by Subko , a new Mumbai cafe and roastery chain bringing hipsters to this part of the city. Then drive through the busy, narrow streets to see some of Mumbai’s diverse and beautiful religious monuments. Visit the nearby Moghal Masjid , a jewel-like, Iranian-style Shiite mosque built in 1860, with intricate blue tiling adorning a curved entrance. Women cannot pray inside the mosque but can enter the compound, which has a pool for ablution. Take in the facade of Hasnabad Dargah , a pristine, ivory-colored mausoleum, known as Mumbai’s Taj Mahal for its resemblance to the original (entry only for Shia Ismaili Muslims). Not far from there is the Magen David Synagogue (entry, 300 rupees), recognizable by its sky blue clock tower, built in the 1860s to serve Mumbai’s once wealthy and influential, but now vanishing , Jewish community.

One person takes a photo using a smartphone inside a restaurant with large windows that reveal an orange sun, shrouded in smog, suspended above the sea.

Bastian at the Top

In the Dadar neighborhood, shop for handwoven saris (from 2,000 rupees) and scarves at Induri Saree Centre , a candy-box-size store. Then line up at Aaswad Upahar and Mithai Griha , a no-frills Dadar institution best visited in April and May with the arrival of fragrant and luscious Alphonso mangoes. Aaswad does a seasonal mango-themed thali (a platter of various small dishes; 470 rupees) that includes a saffron, mango and cardamom drink; a mango dal; and chilled mango pulp called aamras that is the taste of a Mumbai summer in a bowl. Then cross the street to the gleaming, new Kohinoor Square mall and take the elevator 48 floors to Bastian at the Top . With a tree-lined plunge pool and glowing figurines carved into giant pillars, it can feel more like a theme park than a restaurant (it often attracts Bollywood celebrities). It’s worth a cocktail (1,295 rupees) just to take in the sweeping views of the bay.

A person dressed in black performs on a stage to a watching crowd. The performer is backlit by a wall of lamps.

Catch a show at G5A, a cultural center housed in a repurposed textile mill compound.

Two people walk past a vibrant street mural of three dancing women dressed in ornate Indian dress.

A mural by Ranjit Dahiya

The laid-back suburb of Bandra has Portuguese bungalows, Bollywood studios and the full wattage of star homes along with fans hoping for a glimpse. The best bet for encountering Bollywood stars is on the Technicolor, larger-than-life murals in the area’s charming lanes. See a pistol-wielding Dharmendra, from the iconic 1975 movie “Sholay,” opposite the Subko cafe on Chapel Road. Next to it is a triptych of Bollywood’s dancing divas — a feathered Helen and a bejeweled Waheeda Rehman and Asha Parekh. (Ranjit Dahiya, the artist behind many of these murals, also teaches workshops .) Stroll on to Waroda Road (past a moody depiction of the celebrated actor Irrfan Khan) to reach the brightly colored Veronica’s , an all-day cafe that has become something of a living room for Bandra’s young set, who come for creative bites like chicken-and-cheese-filled breakfast momos (395 rupees), potato waffles (350 rupees) and babka stuffed with chorizo (275 rupees).

Leave the chaos of the city behind, driving north to reach the entrance of Sanjay Gandhi National Park , a 40-square-mile preserve where deer, monkeys and the occasional leopard roam. From inside the park, minivans drive visitors about 10 minutes through the forest (1,000 rupees round-trip) to the bottom of a hill. From there, walk up to the Kanheri Caves, a Buddhist complex of more than 100 caves, the oldest dating back 2,000 years, carved into basalt. Some form large, pillared prayer halls, while others feature carved serene Buddhist deities in prayer. Also see the waterways, loosely cut into the hills, that provided water to the monks who lived and meditated there many centuries ago. Park entry, 95 rupees; caves entry, 25 rupees.

Australia’s Arrivals from India Break New Record — Tourism Chief Talks Strategy

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

March 27th, 2024 at 6:05 AM EDT

The travel trends to Australia underscore the potential of India's middle class and its young demographic as a major force in shaping future travel trends.

Peden Doma Bhutia

Australia saw a record-breaking number of arrivals from India last year.

The new figures, which cover February 2023 to January 2024, show 402,200 inbound travelers entered the country from India. The major milestone even surpasses pre-pandemic levels, according to latest data from the  Australian Bureau of Statistics .

It marks the first time Australia has crossed the 400,000-arrival mark. As a result, India is now the 5th largest inbound market for Tourism Australia, up from 7th place in 2019.

The organization also says Indians are spending and contributing significantly to the Australian economy.

The total trip spend by Indian visitors has also seen a notable increase for the year ending January 2024. It is up 20%, amounting to A$ 2.2 billion ($1.4 billion), with the per capita spend rising from A$ 4,908 ($3204) to A$ 5,901 ($3853), according to Nishant Kashikar, country manager — India and Gulf for Tourism Australia.

In January 2024 alone, Australia welcomed 26,200 visitors from India, representing 106% of January 2019 arrivals.

What Clicked For Australia?

“Our initiatives across marketing, public relations, partnerships, distribution, trade, and business events in India, have helped us achieve these numbers,” Kashikar told Skift.

He further credited the three-fold increase in direct aviation capacity from 8 to 28 weekly flights and the streamlined visa application process for enhancing accessibility.

Australia also issues three-year multiple-entry visas to tourists in India without any need for physical submission of documents. The duration of business visas has also been increased by up to five years, compared to the earlier three-year option.

Direct air access by Qantas and Air India, from Indian cities to Australia along with Qantas’ codeshare with IndiGo have also helped to increase accessibility.

“We are working with Indian as well as Australian carriers and airports to further build direct aviation connectivity,” Kashikar said.

Analyzing traveler profiles, Kashikar highlighted that 75% of Indian visitors to Australia were leisure travelers, with 8% traveling for business, 7% for employment, and 5% for short-term education.

Speaking to Skift at the beginning of the year , Kashikar described India as the fastest-growing inbound market for Australia, thanks to the rising middle class .

The Business Travel Rebound

Discussing the bounce-back of meetings, incentives, conferences, and event (MICE) travel from India to Australia, Kashikar noted a significant surge in leads for business events. “We’re seeing a five-time increase in leads than what we witnessed in 2019,” he told Skift in January.

He also said a key factor for this growth has also been the strengthening of bilateral ties between Australia and India across trade, investment, education, and tourism.

Speaking about Indian travel habits, Kashikar mentioned a generational shift as younger Indians travel at a much earlier age, leading to a significant increase in trips.

The shift from a savings-focused economy to one where Indians are spending more on holidays, especially among the youth has also made India a lucrative market for destinations, according to Kashikar. This trend is driving increased expenditure on travel-related services.

Kashikar also noted that Indians are increasingly immersing themselves in local experiences, such as festivals, sporting events, history, architecture, and culinary activities, which presents a significant growth opportunity for travel destinations catering to these preferences.
