The Must-Visit Attractions in Panama City, Panama

Enjoy the view of Panama City from Metropolitan Natural Park

An old Spanish colonial center, a vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches and islands on the doorstep, as well as wild rainforests only a short drive away – the capital of Panama has plenty to keep you busy besides the canal. Here are the must-see attractions in Panama City to help you navigate your stopover or longer stay.

1. the canal.

Architectural Landmark

Panama, Panama Canal, Gaillard cut & Centennial bridge

Top of the list is the Panama Canal – a 48mi (77km) artificial waterway connecting the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans, which can be seen from the Miraflores Visitor’s Center. Despite plans dating back to the 16th century, the canal wasn’t constructed until 1914 – resulting in the annexation of the region by the United States from Colombia and the eventual creation of the country of Panama itself. Some 14,000 ships transit the canal every year.

2. Casco Viejo

Plaza de la Independencia, Plaza Mayor or Plaza Catedral in Casco Viejo in Panama City

The terracotta roofs, café-bars and bell towers of the old quarter huddle over the sea in the city’s south. Built in the middle of the 17th century, after the abandonment of the original settlement, it was reputedly set alight by Governor Don Juan Pérez de Guzmán in 1671 (to save Panama from pirate plunder), rebuilt, left to become a slum and finally gentrified in the late 20th century. It is now part of the Historic District of Panama Unesco World Heritage site.

5. El Tornillo

Building, Architectural Landmark

Panama City,Panam - march 2018: The famous F&F Tower, office building and skyline of Panama City, Panama

Like a giant verdigris screw jutting from the heart of the Financial District, topped with a vicious-looking spike, the 797ft (243m) F&F Tower (aka El Tornillo or the screw), is the most striking skyscraper in Panama. It was built from reinforced concrete and stacked stories of green sheet-glass in 2011 in the Calle 50 neighborhood. The building was designed by the local firm Pinzón Lozano & Associates – the creative force behind many of the vertiginous business towers in Panama City.

6. Soberania National Park

Natural Feature, Park

The Chagres River and the Soberania National Park in the distance

Ultra-modern and resolutely urban Downtown Panama City may be, but it’s only 45 minutes from some genuine wilderness: Soberania National Park, which is protecting some 55,000 acres (22,257ha) of steamy rainforest ribboned with rivers. The park is particularly popular among birdwatchers, and it’s possible to see more than 400 species, including parrots and eagles, along the easy-to-access Pipeline Road – remarkable when you consider that’s just under half the number of bird species found in the whole of Costa Rica. There are still more to be seen on the deeper jungle trails.

9. Einstein's Head

On January 4, 1933, the world’s most famous physicist and his wife paid a visit to Panama en route to California. They bought souvenirs for their children at the markets, rode in a horse-drawn carriage in Colón and crossed the Panama Canal in the steamship Belgenland. Cabeza de Einstein (Einstein’s Head) is a giant bust positioned on a traffic island amid whirling vehicles on Via Argentina (in the vibrant central neighborhood of El Cangrejo). Measuring about 10ft by 10ft (3m by 3m), it was sculpted by Carlos Arboleda, one of Panama’s most renowned artists, for a long-gone Jewish community and inaugurated in 1968 to commemorate the event.

10. The Miraflores Locks

11. The City Center

While the Casco Viejo oozes sleepy colonial charm, Downtown Panama City is upbeat, urban and modern-metropolitan. There’s nowhere better to people-watch than the main pedestrian causeway, just off the Avenida Central, where businessmen in suits rub shoulders with street hawkers and performers. Experience also the Cinta Costera, a long waterfront park against a cityscape of skyscrapers. It’s busy with people playing volleyball and football or gathered, ice-creams in hand, to watch the golden sunset.

12. Gamboa Rainforest Resort

13. Punta Culebra

Natural Feature

Punta Culebra, Smithsonian Research Center, Panama City, Panama.

On one of the Amador islands, connected by a causeway to Downtown Panama City, the Punta Culebra Nature Center is an educational project run by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. There are short forest trails, a small beach, touch tanks and a little zoo with rehabilitated sea turtles. Spend time with the numerous displays that profile Panama’s biodiversity, as well as the different environments and ecosystems in the country and Central and South America as a whole.

14. Ciudad del Saber

Ciudad del Saber front view - City of knowledge Panama

Immediately east of the Miraflores Locks, the Ciudad del Saber (City of Knowledge) is a former US military base converted by the Panamanian government into a gated residential neighborhood and Business District. This is where a number of key tech companies, UN bodies and academic organizations have their headquarters. With sports amenities in a big public park, it’s a popular residential area for migrants, and one of the best places to watch the opening and closing of the Miraflores Locks.

The Puente de las Americas stretches across the Panama Canal, connecting Panama City by road with the rest of the country. The views over the locks to the Pacific are impressive, and, at the western end, there’s a lookout. Stop here a while to take a photo and pay your respects at the poignant Chinese Memorial monument. It was built to commemorate the back-breaking work of 700 or so Chinese migrant laborers, many of whom lost their lives in the construction of the 1850s Panama Railroad.

Whether you are looking to have a cheap and delicious plate of ceviche, to buy fresh seafood directly from the fishermen or simply to people-watch, the Mercado de Mariscos is an essential port of call – especially in the early mornings around 6am, when the catches of the day are brought in from the Pacific; or at lunchtime, when local Panamanians from all walks of life flock here to eat and converse.

There are no cars, just running tracks and forest trails leading to a summit planted with the Panamanian flag. From up here, you get impressive city skyline and Panama Bay views. It’s a popular place for a day’s light hiking, and you’re sure to see toucans and capuchin monkeys in the trees along the way.

Essentially, this is a thin strip of land jutting into Panama Bay, connecting Downtown Panama City to the Amador Islands. It was created with the rocks that came from the excavations of the Panama Canal. Recently renovated, it is so much more than the sum of its parts: the area is a favorite free-time destination for both tourists and locals, who rent cycles, have lunch or take a run along the causeway, enjoying great views over the ocean and the city.

24 Best Things to do in Panama City, Panama

Written By: The Planet D

Updated On: December 20, 2023

Looking for things to do in Panama City, Panama? Whether you are going on a cruise through the Panama Canal or escaping to one of Panama’s luxurious islands, chances are you are going to visit Panama City for at least a day or two. This Panama City guide will help you plan your time there.

We first visited Panama City when we were invited to check out all the cool elements of the Hard Rock Hotel downtown Panama. Not only was it a cool hotel, but the city also blew us away! It has the perfect blend of a high-tech modern metropolis combined with a well-preserved history in its old town and historic ruins.

Table of Contents

Things to do in Panama City

During our first time in Panama City, we spent a week exploring everything it had to offer in the downtown core. We visited the Old Town, and the waterfront, and stayed at one of Panama City’s most recognizable hotels, the Hard Rock Hotel Panama. (rumour has it that this hotel is now closed but the website is still up and running so it is unconfirmed)

Recently, we returned to Panama with Uncruise to sail to Costa Rica from Panama and had the chance to tick off the rest of our Panama City bucket list. This city is a modern wonder that has blended its state-of-the-art architecture with its historic center. If you are visiting Central America, make sure to spend at least a few days exploring the best of Panama City. Enjoy these must-see attractions in Panama City and extra travel tips to help you make the most of your stay!

1. Panama Canal – Miraflores

The obvious choice for first-time visitors to Panama City is to check out the Panama Canal . The closest locks to Panama City are the Miraflores Locks located less than 30 minutes from downtown making it an easy day trip. It is amazing to see the crowds that the locks still attract and even we were a bit giddy when we viewed a cargo ship going through.

The Panama Canal, which connects the Atlantic ocean with the Pacific ocean, is one of the Seven Industrial Wonders of the World and when you walk through the fabulous interactive Miraflores visitors center, you’ll understand why! This was not an easy waterway to make. There are two levels of viewing platforms to watch the ships and a Panama Canal museum. It is definitely the number 1 thing to do in Panama City.

First time to Panama City? This city tour is a great introduction to Panama where you’ll visit many of the top attractions including the Miraflores Locks visitor center where you’ll skip the lines arriving as soon as they open. After you’ve seen the famous Panama Canal, you’ll make your way to Casco Viejo, the Amador Causeway, the viewpoint of Panama City, and the boardwalk and waterfront with your local expert guide.

2. Casco Viejo

No visit to Panama City would be complete without taking a stroll through its old town. Casco Viejo, (Old Town) is the historic center of Panama City that is being restored to its original glory. Dating back to 1673, Casco Viejo is worth visiting on a tour to learn about all the buildings, cathedrals, and history of the area.

The historic center of Panama is a must-visit. It reminded us of the old town of Havana, Cuba and I can envision it being as beautiful in just a few short years as hotels and corporations transform the crumbling ruins into boutique hotels. This 2-hour walking tour takes you through the old quarter, where you’ll see the top tourist attractions including San Francisco de Asis and San José churches, the Panama waterfront and admire the architecture inspired by Spanish, French and early Americans.

3. Plaza de Francia

While in Casco Viejo make sure to visit Plaza de Francia. Also, known as The French Plaza, Plaza de Francia is a monument dedicated to the 22,000 workers who died during the construction of the Panama Canal. Here you’ll be able to see the Instituto Nacional de Cultura (National Institute of Culture) that houses a theater and cultural events. The statues and tablets depict the role that the French played in the construction of the Panama Canal.

Fun Fact: It is here that you’ll see a plaque dedicated to the Cuban doctor Carlos J. Finlay, who discovered out how mosquitoes transmitted yellow fever.

4. Convent Santo Domingo

Located in the Casco Viejo, a quick photography stop is the Convent Santo Domingo and its Flat Arch (El Arco Chato). Similar to another popular tourist attraction in Panama (eh-hem, The Panama Canal), the arch is a feat of engineering for its time. Spanning nearly 50 feet without any support, it stood the test of time and helped solidify Panama as the place for the canal connecting the two oceans. Since it had stood since the 17th century, it proved that Panama wasn’t as prone to earthquakes at Nicaragua, thus making for better, … for the Panama Canal.

5. Plaza de la Independencia (Independence Square)

Also known as Plaza Mayor or Cathedral Plaza, Plaza de la Independencia is a plaza with the Metropolitan Cathedral of Panama (Basilica of the Virgin of Santa María la Antigua) standing proud at its center. It is a quiet respite from the city with colonial architecture housing restaurants, shops and boutique shopping. You’ll also see the Panama Canal Museum and the headquarters of the Municipal Council in Plaza de la Independencia. We stumbled upon this square during a walk around the city and fell in love with its colonial architecture, its lovely white gazebo and the shady trees lining the square.

6. Iglesia San Felipe Nativity Scene

Even if you are not religious, this nativity scene in Iglesia San Felipe is impressive. For years, families in Panama set up their own nativity scenes around the city but after the restoration of Iglesia San Felipe de Neri, one family donated their massive scene that they built up over the years for everyone to enjoy. If you take a walking tour of the Old Town, chances are your guide will take you into this hidden gem.

Other Things to see in Casco Viejo

You should spend at least an afternoon in Caso Viejo. Take a walking tour of Casco Viejo to see all the main sites and attractions. Check out this city tour with GetYourGuide

One of the best ways we explored Panama was on a private tour. This highly rated private tour lets you explore Panama at your own pace with a customizable tour to suit your desires. Follow your local guide to top-rated attractions such as Casco Viejo, The Causeway, and other parts of the city as you learn insider tips, such as the best places to eat, buy groceries and the easiest ways to get around.

  • Historic Society of Jesus
  • Church of San Jose – Gold Altar

Gentrification is becoming a problem for the local families that lived in this neighborhood rent-free, so I do hope the government takes care of the people who are the heartbeat of Panama City. But I do also believe in progress, and turning this UNESCO World Heritage Site into a maze of walking streets filled with boutiques, cafés, and restaurants, will help everyone in the long run.

7. Panama Viejo

Not to be confused with Casco Viejo, Panama Viejo is a fascinating tour through the abandoned ruins of the original city. The highway once ran directly through these historic monuments, but thankfully, it was diverted before it all disappeared.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, dating back to 1519, Panama Viejo was the heart of the economic power of trade, religion, and commerce. The city was in use until 1671 when the Spaniards sacked the city themselves before moving to what we know today as Panama Viejo.

Panama was the first European settlement on the Pacific Coast and became a strategic location for mining gold and silver. There are several walls and facades remaining and they are doing regular restoration. The most impressive ruin is the Cathedral – Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción where you can climb up the bell tower for a panoramic view of Panama City.

8. Cinta Costera

Cinta Costera is the beating heart of Panama City. This 64-acre oceanfront parkway is within walking distance from the major hotels, shopping malls and restaurants. One of our favorite things to do in Panama was to walk along the walking trails of Cinta Costera taking in the views of the city. Spanish for Coastal Walkway, tourists and visitors alike use this greenspace for cycling, working out or simply taking relaxing away from the hustle and bustle.

You can rent bikes or hire a rickshaw to take you on a tour of Cinta Costera to explore many of the top attractions in Panama City.

9. Balboa Avenue

Avenue Balboa is Panama City’s downtown neighborhood with skyscrapers lining the waterfront. This ultra-modern waterfront neighborhood is a fun place to hang out for the afternoon.

There’s a paved walkway for cycling or walking. You can walk all the way along the 3km route to Casco Viejo. We stopped in at five-star hotels for a cocktail and for rooftop views of the bay.

10. Amador Causeway

This incredible 6km stretch of road houses some of Panama’s top attractions. It’s located 20 minutes outside the city and offers excellent views of Panama.

It is here, that you can enjoy some fun in the sun paddle boarding, hanging out at the pool bars or do some shopping. You can also hop on the aqua bus here for a view of Panama from the water.

11. Centro Artisan Market

Located at the Amador Causeway, this huge Artisan Market is a great place to shop for your souvenirs. I’ve picked up many a necklace from here, but you can also get masks, jewelry, Panama hats, and other nick nacks here. For another great shopping experience check out the pedestrian mall at the end of Avenida Central.

12. Albrook Mall

If shopping is your thing, pay a visit to Albrook Mall. It is the largest shopping mall in Central America. This mall really is a tourist attraction unto itself. It’s the 14th largest mall in the world and that’s saying a lot. When you think about the mega malls found in Dubai and Asia, its’ amazing that one of the top 20 is in Panama. The mall is located close to the airport and is just minutes from three of Panama’s most popular tourist attractions, the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal, the historic area of Casco Antiguo, and the Causeway.

The Wyndham Hotel is connected to the Albrook Mall making it a good choice to stay in Panama if you are flying out the next day.

13. Bridge of the Americas

It is from the Amador Causeway that you can see the Bridge of the Americas. This massive bridge spans the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal. It was built by the United States in 1962. What is so unique about this bridge? It connects the landmasses of North America and South America.

14. Sunset at the JW Marriott 65 Floor

Another residential neighborhood popular with ex-pats is Punta Pacifica. It’s about a 20-minute walk from Balboa Avenue, or you can take an Uber or taxi for a reasonable price.

The JW Marriott has a huge Casino attached to the main floor. If you go here, take the elevators up to the 65th floor to the rooftop bar overlooking the infinity pool. This rooftop pool and bar is one of the most chic areas in the city. It’s one of the best sunset views in the city!

15. Marvel at El Tornillo

Definitely, the most unique building in Panama City is the spiral skyrise of El Tornillo. The best view we found of it was from the Hard Rock pool bar, but we also went for a walk to check it out up close. There isn’t a lot around there, so we suggest viewing it from afar instead.

16. Buy a Panama Hat

Here’s a fun fact. Panama Hats are not made in Panama. Panama Hats originated in Ecuador and are still made there. The Panama Hat got its name when President Roosevelt was photographed wearing one while visiting the Panama Canal.

The name stuck and even though they are not made here, they are very popular. In Casca Viejo, you can find many Panama Hats on sale at shops. Victor’s is the most popular spot for purchasing a hat. What we loved about buying a Panama Hat in the shops, is that there is no bargaining. You can buy high quality or cheaper imitations ranging from $25 – $200.

17. Biomuseo

Designed by architect Frank Gehry, the Biomuseo explores the biodiversity of Panama. Its unique location bridges North and South America. It’s also a pretty cool and funky building!

18. Ancon Hill

For one of the best overhead views of Panama, Ancon Hill is a great stop. It is included in many Panama City Day Tours, so if you don’t have transportation, chances are you’ll be able to see it if you book a tour!

Panama City Day Trips

19. san lorenzo fort.

Checking out the San Lorenzo Fort was a part of our UnCruise itinerary and I am so glad we had the chance to see this! Another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Panama, this former Spanish military fort was a strategic location for the gold trade. Located on a beautiful clifftop the ocean and Chargras River views are extraordinary. Plus, it is a well-preserved fort dating back to the 1500s.

20. Monkey Island of Gatun Lake

As part of the UnCruise land extension for their Panama to Costa Rica cruise, Gatun Lake is an excellent way to see Panama wildlife such as iguanas, crocodiles, monkeys, toucans, and sloths. I had no idea that the Panama Canal was intertwined with wide and vast waterways.

This highly rated tour takes you to Monkey Island where you’ll catch a riverboat to the Chagres River to see the monkeys of Monkey Island including white-face monkeys, howler monkeys and tamarinds on this island in Gatun Lake.

21. Agua Clara Visitor Center

This Panama Canal expansion is located at Gatun Lake and is an interesting trip to the small town of Colon City. This lock was made to accommodate larger ships sailing through the Panama Canal. You can watch the cruise ships and cargo ships go through from the viewing platforms.

There is a projection room, restaurants, and a hiking trails where you can to try to spot wildlife. You Can visit Colon, Agua Clara, and San Lorenzo Fort on a day tour with Get Your Guide from Panama City.

Enjoy our Video Tour of Panama City

No trip to Central America would be complete without getting on the water, and this boat tour out of Panama City takes you to Taboga Island where you’ll hop aboard a catamaran for a 45-minute cruise where you’ll see the extraordinary Panama City skyline, and Cinta Costera with light snacks, lunch and an all-inclusive bar included.

22. San Blas Islands

San Blas Island has gained in popularity since the Netflix series Money Heist featured the beautiful and secluded white sand beaches of the San Blas Islands surrounded by turquoise water. San Blas Port is located 2.5 hours outside of Panama City and from here you’ll take a Pangas boat to the islands. If you have more time, we suggest spending a night or two on the island, but day tours are offered from downtown.

You can book a Money Heist-themed tour to San Blas Islands from Panama City. ON this tour you’ll visit four islands in one day including snorkeling at Perro Chico, known as the best snorkeling spot in the San Blas Islands, Waily Lodge, Pelicano and the natural swimming pool on a sand bar in the middle of the ocean.

Where to Stay in Panama City

Marbella neighborhood, bella vista neighborhood.

Bristol Hotel – We enjoyed our stay at the Bristol Hotel and found it to be an even better location than the Hard Rock. It didn’t have the amenities of the Hard Rock though if you are looking for a full service hotel. Instead, it is a good luxury choice for a couple of days of sightseeing. We loved the breakfast. Check Availability and Prices on Booking.com or TripAdvisor

Punta Pacifica Neighborhood

JW Marriott – We didn’t find this area to be ideally located as it is away from most of Panama’s top attractions. But the hotel is luxurious with full amenities and an excellent view of the city. Check Availability and Prices on Booking.com or TripAdvisor

Casco Viejo Neighborhood

Central Hotel Panama – Casco Viejo is probably the best location to stay in Panama if you want to be in the heart of the action. Most nightlife has moved to this area and it is near plenty of shopping and culture. Check Availability and Prices on Booking.com or TripAdvisor

18 Best Things to do in Panama City

' src=

Exploring Panama City leads only to the discovery that this vibrant Central American city is far more than an iconic canal. Yes, it is a man-made marvel whose sheer size is hard to comprehend.

But a city with historic connections to Captain Morgan and a slew of modern skyscrapers will have you spending most of your time elsewhere.

Walkways and causeways guide you along the vast waterfront, forever changed by the implementation of the canal. Rolling hills and nearby islands lead to spectacular vistas.

Inner and outer city national parks bring you up close to native wildlife and rich rainforests. While old towns take you down memory lane before serving up cocktails on modern-day rooftops.

And if the heat and traffic congestions becomes too much after exploring all the things to do in Panama City, there are several great beaches just a short (boat) ride away.

18. Ancon Hill

Ancon Hill

There are several ways to get vibrant views of Panama City. But a trip up Ancon Hill is likely to be your favorite. A paved road takes you from the hill base entrance to the summit, with 30 minutes needed for walkers.

Ancon Hill opens to the public at 5.30am, allowing early risers the chance to watch the sunrise slightly to the right of Panama City. These folks are rewarded with bursting oranges traveling across the water to wake up the city, painting high-rise buildings with warm morning colors.

Regardless of your time of visit, the view allows you to see the entire city from above, along with the Miraflores Locks and the Bridge of the Americas.

17. Bridge of the Americas

Bridge of the Americas

One of Panama City’s attractions that can be seen from the Amador Causeway is the Bridge of the Americas. Crossing above the entrance of the Panama Canal, this spectacular bridge connects either side of Central America and was built over three years from 1959 to 1962.

In addition, without it, there would be no major connection between either the North and South American continents. The historic four-lane bridge replaced the old swinging bridge at Gatun Locks with the other major option, a car ferry across the canal. The Bridge of the Americas is now complemented by the Centennial Bridge and the Atlantic Bridge.

The best time to visit is at night, when the bridge lights up in front of a colorful sunset.

16. Capilla San Jose

Capilla San Jose

In 1671, the notorious Captain Morgan made his way to modern day Panama City and changed the region’s trajectory. He pillaged and looted the old city. But there was once a particular piece, a church, that survived untouched and is now found within Capilla San Jose.

The famous church was developed two years after the famous raid in 1673. The church features gorgeous altarpieces and columns. But its main attraction is the enormous Golden Altar, aka Altar de Oro.

The altar survived the clutches of Morgan as the resident priest painted it black as a disguise. Thinking it was already taken, Morgan went on his merry way.

15. El Tornillo

Iglesia del Carmen may be the most romanticized building in Panama City, but none are more futuristic and inspiring than El Tornillo. The unique structure twists and climbs towards the heavens, reminiscent of a spiral staircase.

The 52-storey behemoth reaches a total height of 243 meters (796 feet). Found within Panama City’s business district, the best way to appreciate this stunning piece of architecture, otherwise known as F & F Tower, is to view it from afar.

A great way to do this is by visiting the Cinta Costera where you can explore the waterfront and see the tower’s central place in the city’s mesmerizing skyline.

14. Albrook Mall

Albrook Mall

There are two reasons to visit the largest shopping mall in Central America. You need a break from the outside weather (think heavy rain or scorching heat), or you’re in need of a little retail therapy. Regardless, what you’ll discover is a mall that is an attraction all on its own. With air conditioning included.

Close to the Causeway and the Miraflores Locks, the Albrook Mall is packed with 50,000 daily visitors with hundreds of shops, ample restaurants and plenty of additional fun.

Once you’ve loaded up the shopping bags with clothing, it’s time to enjoy some indoor fun that includes ten-pin bowling and a cinema.

13. Metropolitan National Park

Metropolitan National Park

National Parks are usually found away from high-rise buildings and bustling streets of major cities. Panama, however, does things a little differently. With the Metropolitan National Park, you can understand how closely entwined the city is with its vibrant nature.

The rare combination of city and national park is one to get giddy about. Grab a bike and in minutes be within a sprawling natural sanctuary home to over 200 bird species, 45 mammals and almost 300 unique plant species.

The lush greenery is rich and as towering as the surrounding buildings. Some of the city’s oldest trees reach over 35 meters (115 feet) high.

12. Panama Canal Museum

Panama Canal Museum

If the Miraflores Visitor Center wasn’t enough to satisfy your pursuit of understanding the Panama Canal, then we have another option. The Panama Canal Museum explores the early, failed attempts at creating a canal and follows a timeline to the modern day.

Housed within Panama City’s old central post office, the Panama Canal Museum goes into detail on France’s original attempts to create a canal. You can learn more about how the United States took over creating this engineering marvel.

Then discover the political back and forth that led to the return of the canal to Panama’s government. Afterwards, wander outside and explore the local streets of Casco Viejo.

11. Iglesia del Carmen

Iglesia del Carmen

The architecture of Panama City is a rich blend of old and new. Perhaps the most striking construction to be found here is the Iglesia del Carmen. However, the Gothic design of The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmen may look medieval, but the beloved church was built recently in the 1900s.

The only Gothic church in Panama, Iglesia del Carmen, is a sight to behold. The front facade features two skyscraping towers and a detailed arch. Running along either side are a series of glimmering stained windows.

Within, the cream columns guide your eyes up to the vaulted arched ceiling and eventually to the church’s end, where spectacular iconography is painted along the wall.

10. Soberania National Park

Soberania National Park

The Amador Causeway and Cinta Costera are two quick ways to get active and enjoy nature. But neither compare to a trip to Soberania National Park.

A mere 30 minutes from Panama City, Soberania is the perfect place for a long hike. The park’s trails will guide you through stunning rainforests where birds sing brilliant tunes, native animals lurk behind the trees and waterfalls mark the turnaround point.

Animal lovers will want to hire a guide to best explore one of the top bird-watching destinations in Central America. In addition, a knowledgeable guide will help spot the critters that call the park home.

9. Cinta Costera

Cinta Costera

Surrounded by rows of palms, towering buildings and manicured landscaping, Cinta Costera is a place to walk, relax and enjoy a picnic. Wake up early before the Panamanian sun climbs too high, to explore this vast green space, or come back around golden hour.

Cinta Costera means coastal walkway and for those who can handle the heat the walking and bike paths are always brimming with activity. Travelers can get their hands on a bike of their own or even climb onboard a rickshaw to explore the walkway with a guide pointing out key monuments along the way.

At any point, get your hands on some shaved ice (raspado) to cool down.

8. Monkey Island at Gatun Lake

Monkey Island

As one of the most popular day trips from Panama City , Monkey Island at Gatun Lake is more than just a way to escape the inner-city. A trip here will help you discover the world around the Panama Canal, its incredible collection of waterways and a world forever changed by this engineering marvel (Gatun Lake was once the largest man-made lake on earth).

And that’s just the trip to Monkey Island.

You’ll find a long list of tours, including or focusing on Gatun Lake. So it’s easy to complete as a last-minute excursion. Most tours take you along the canal to their island where you’ll see four monkey species in their natural habitat.

7. Biomuseo

Biomuseo

You’ll find the sightly Biomuseo along the Amador Causeway. Whether you’re arriving on a bike, foot or by car, take time to admire the stunning buildings from afar before entering.

The Biomuseo can be seen from Casco Viejo and is surrounded by the harbor close to the Panama Canal. Designed by the iconic architect Frank Gehry, the rainbow-esque building quickly captivates your imagination.

You’ll be happy to know all that’s within the Biomuseo strikes a similar vibe. Inside, you’ll learn all about the fascination and diverse nature in Panama alongside a look into the nation’s rich cultural history.

Travelers can also sign up for a free tour that takes you through each of the eight major galleries.

6. Miraflores Visitor Center

Miraflores Visitor Center

A visit to the Miraflores Locks along the famed Panama Canal will bring you to the doorstep of the Miraflores Visitor Center. A trip here isn’t complete without stepping inside the four-story complex that boasts an interactive look at the history of the canal.

Across the four stories, you’ll be taken on a journey through one of the 7 Industrial Wonders of the World. It all begins with a 15-minute film taking you back to May 4th 1904 when construction began and the 10-year journey of creating a canal that connected the Caribbean Sea with the Pacific Ocean.

Each level offers a look at a different era, along with the surrounding ecology, how it’s operated and expanded in 2016. Along the way, you’ll be afforded several views of the Panama Canal, so keep your cameras ready.

5. Panama Viejo

Panama Viejo

Before wandering around the old town of Casco Viejo, it pays to visit Panama’s original city, Panama Viejo. This ruinous city, located 20 minutes from downtown, was founded in the early part of the 16th century.

The Spanish city thrived until the arrival of one Captain Morgan, who forever challenged the status quo. Panama Viejo is now a collection of 14 major ruins covering a vast area.

Begin at the Museo de Sitio Panama Viejo where you can explore scale models of the entire city. Taking you back to the city’s heyday, you’ll have more appreciation for what it was and the role the remaining ruins once played.

Highlights include a cathedral and chapels from the early 17th century and Puente del Rey, thought to be the oldest bridge in the Americas.

4. Isla Taboga

Isla Taboga

With a small population of around 2,000 residents, Isla Taboga is an idyllic escape from the bustling Panama City. Taking between 30 minutes and an hour (depending on boat choice), the brief trip will leave you surrounded by lush vegetation, pastel-colored homes and fresh Caribbean air.

Here, the long golden beaches stretch into the distance. Cocktails are served in carved-out coconuts and locals work, play and relax as if there’s nothing beyond the island’s confines.

Known as the Island of Flowers, the picturesque Isla Taboga is worth exploring on foot. The rolling hills lead to towering views of the bright blue sea and the vibrant, kaleidoscopic town of Cerro de la Cruz. The latter was a famous haunt of Captain Morgan and home to the second-oldest church in the Americas.

3. Casco Viejo

Casco Viejo

The Old Town of Panama City, Casco Viejo, is a time capsule. Its foundations are connected to the infamous Captain Morgan, and some of Casco Viejo’s oldest structures can be traced back to the 1600s.

In 1671, the English privateer Captain Henry Morgan rattled Spanish control of Panama and looted its rich city of Panama Viejo. Casco Viejo was born from this and while much has changed in the centuries since, the connection remains poignant.

In Casco Viejo, the old streets are narrow and paved with cobblestone. Once a poor neighborhood, it’s found new life as both a historic centerpiece and also a lively place for food and drink. Once the heat of day resides, locals descend upon the streets and head to rooftop bars for cocktails. Some likely with Captain Morgan’s rum.

2. Amador Causeway

Amador Causeway

Perhaps the best way to explore Panama City is with a trip down the Amador Causeway. This stretch of tar combines some of the best things to do in Panama City, including many on this list, over the course of 6 kilometers (3.7 miles).

Although 20 minutes from downtown, the Amador Causeway is home to the intriguing Biomuseo, walking and biking trails and the spectacular Bridge of America.

For those seeking an authentic shopping experience, the Amador Causeway also ticks that box. Along the drive is the Centro Artisan Market, that’s littered with handcrafted goods and traditional clothing.

The best way to explore is on a bike. The slow pace allows you to take in the man-made slit of land surrounded by harbor on your way to each attraction.

1. Panama Canal

Panama Canal

The engineering brilliance of the Panama Canal is just one aspect of what makes this marvel a must-see. The famous waterway and centerpiece of Panama’s international fame is complex and enormous, in ways hard to fathom.

Spanning the width of the country, the Panama Canal can be explored from various points. However, to stay close to Panama City, your best option is to make your way to the Miraflores Locks.

The Miraflores Locks are found 30 minutes from the inner city. Alongside fellow travelers, you can sense the atmosphere reach its zenith whenever a towering cargo ship makes its way through.

To learn more about the locks and the history of the canal, wander into the visitor center, where you’ll enjoy a trip back to the very beginning.

Best Time to Visit Panama City

As Panama City has a hot, humid tropical climate, most people visit from December to April, during the dry season. While very warm, average temperatures of 29 to 32°C (84 to 89°F) are great for exploring the old town, hiking about its national parks or sunbathing on some of its nearby beaches.

December is by far the busiest month as people pour in for the Christmas holidays and New Year’s Eve celebrations. As such, the price of flights and accommodation is higher than other months of the year. It is only after Easter though that the crowds die down a bit. Before this, however, there are the fun carnival, jazz festival and Semana Santa festivities to enjoy.

May sees a dramatic dip in tourist numbers as the increasing heat, humidity and start of the rainy season puts most people off. Although Panama City lies south of the hurricane belt, up until November, each month sees between 17 and 24 days with at least some rain.

Despite this, July and August both welcome loads of holidaymakers, with flight prices rising as a result. After the short, tropical thunderstorms, the weather is usually good enough for sightseeing. The crowds increase again in November when Independence Day parades and parties are held everywhere.

The Island of Bocas del Toro is one of Panamas best destinations for a tropical holiday. Been there last year and we had a lot of happy memories biking, shopping, and surfing in Isla Colon. I also highly recommend the place for traveling surfers.

Very useful article, thanks!

Things to do in Panama City Panama, Casco Viejo architecture on the waterfront of Pacific Ocean

1. Wander the old streets of Casco Viejo

We believe every first time visitor to Panama City should visit Casco Viejo, also known as Casco Antiguo or San Felipe. This is Panama City’s historic old quarter. It’s listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is arguably the most popular tourist attraction in Panama City.

This trendy neighbourhood has a mix of old Spanish colonial and neoclassical architecture. It’s an interesting place, with many layers. Some buildings are completely restored to former glory, while others are left to crumble and fall apart. This is where you will find trendy restaurants and bars, boutique hotels, artsy shops and hipster cafes.

Casco Viejo is a relatively safe part of  Panama City , where tourists are able to wander aimlessly. That said, like most big cities in Central America, you should still remain vigilant from pickpockets and scammers.

You can either book an organized sightseeing tour of Casco Viejo or simply show up and let the cobblestone streets guide you.

2. Watch ships pass through the Panama Canal

Another must-see Panama City attraction is visiting the world famous Panama Canal. It’s said to be one of the largest, and most difficult, engineering projects ever completed. It’s considered one of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World , a claim that is hard to dispute after you learn about its remarkable engineering accomplishments.

The Panama Canal is an artificial waterway that connects the Pacific Ocean with the Atlantic Ocean. The canal has a lock system that raise and lower ships to Gatun Lake, a large freshwater artificial lake that sits 85 feet above sea level.

The best place to watch ships pass through the Panama Canal is at the Miraflores Locks Visitor Center in Panama City, picture below. Watch this short video from our visit to the Miraflores Locks.

Visit Monkey Island Panama City, Panama

3. Monkey Island Panama

If you’re looking for a unique Panama experience, a trip to Monkey Island will do the trick. We joined the Monkey Island Tour from Panama City. It’s a 4 hour excursion that includes round-trip transportation with an English speaking guide. The tour includes a boat ride up and down the Panama Canal, so you get the added bonus of speeding past mega-ships as they sail through the canal.

More details about the Monkey Island Panama tour here .

The Lake Gatun region is home to four monkey species – Panamanian white-faced capuchin (picture below), Geoffroy’s tamarin (pictured above), lemurine owl monkeys and mantled howler monkey. Monkey Island tours allow visitors the chance to witness these monkeys up close in their natural habitat.

You can also combine the Monkey Island Panama tour with a visit to the Sloth Sanctuary, where you can see rescued three-toed and two-toed sloths. Details about this tour  here .

4. Soberania National Park

Located 25 kilometers from Panama City, near the town of Gamboa, Soberania National Park is the perfect day trip from Panama City for nature lovers who want to experience the Panamanian rainforest. It’s a 45 minute drive from downtown Panama City to the park.

Soberania National Park is home to over 500 bird species, making it a birdwatcher’s paradise. Walk the popular Pipeline Road and search for toucans, crimson-fronted parakeet, crested owls and other rare birds, like the red-bellied woodpecker and yellow-eared toucanets.

This national park, which is over 55,000 acres, is home to over 100 species of mammals, including the white-faced capuchin monkeys, mantled howler monkey, Geoffroy’s tamarins, Tamandua Mexicana (anteater), two-toed and three-toed sloths, white-nosed coatis and agoutis.

While there, plan to visit the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center and climb 174 steps to the top of the Observation Tower. The top platform is 32 meters high and offers incredible views of the forest.

Here’s a short video about the Discovery Center.

Gamboa Rainforest Reserve is located on the edge of Soberania National Park. This is the launch point for many outdoor activities and tourist attractions. Take the Aerial Tram tour through the rainforest and visit the Panama Sloth Sanctuary.

Learn about Gamboa Rainforest Tours here .

You can also stay overnight at the Gamboa Rainforest Resort and spend more time in the jungle.

giant Panama sign at Flamenco Island on Amador Causeway in Panama City

5. Walk or bike Amador Causeway

Amador Causeway is where you will find many of Panama City’s top activities and attractions. The road stretches over 6 km and links the small islands of Naos, Perico and Flamenco.

This is where the southern entrance of the Panama Canal connects with the Pacific Ocean, making it an ideal spot to watch the huge container ships enter and exit Panama’s famous canal.

The star attraction at Amador Causeway is Biomuseo , a museum focused on the natural history of Panama. You won’t have trouble finding this unique museum. Just look for the bright and colourful building with futuristic architecture. The museum has eight exhibition halls that display Panama’s geology, natural history and diverse cultures.

Things to do at Amador Causeway

Visitors can rent bikes (check out  Bicicletas Moses ) or walk along the waterfront boardwalk. Make sure you snap a photo in front of the giant Panama sign along the way. If you’d like to test your luck at fishing, there’s a fishing platform just before Isla Naos.

Other Amador Causeway attractions include Punta Culebra Nature Center, La Playita pool bar at The Beach House, Omar Torrijos Herrera’s Mausoleum, Museo de la Libertad and Flamenco Marina.

Popular Amador Causeway restaurants are Mi Ranchito, Beirut Calzada de Amador, Hapai Tiki Bar and/or Restaurante Bucaneros.

7. Avenida Balboa and Cinta Costera

If you’re looking for cheap things to do in Panama City, head to Avenida Balboa and Cinta Costera. This is the perfect place to get outside and enjoy the hot Panama climate.

Cinta Costera is a pedestrian walkway that connects Punta Paitilla (pictured above) to Casco Viejo and Amador Causeway.

You will see a lot of Panama City by walking, running or cycling this waterfront path. There are several parks and grass sections here, so it’s an ideal place to let your kids run wild and burn off some energy.

While walking along Cinta Costera, keep an eye out for the big colourful Panama signs. Because every tourist needs a photo with a big sign, right?

Near the entrance to Casco Viejo you will find Mercado De Marisco Cinta Costera, a popular fish and seafood market. This is a fun place to grab lunch. If you like fresh seafood, we recommend you sample some local ceviche here.

8. Day trip to San Blas Islands

The San Blas Islands are one of Panama’s greatest treasures. You won’t find all-inclusive resorts with huge swimming pools here. Nor will you find mega cruise ships or mass tourism infrastructure.

And that’s precisely what makes these remote palm tree islands so special.

Travel to San Blas Islands is not easy. While you technically can rent a vehicle and drive from Panama City to the coast, it’s recommended that you take a San Blas Islands tour. When you factor in the cost of renting a vehicle, insurance, fuel, parking and boat transportation, it makes sense to join an organized tour.

If your plan is to take a day trip to San Blas islands, you will absolutely want to join a tour so you can visit a few different islands. It will be a very long day that starts at 5:00 AM and ends late in the evening. If you have the time, we recommend you stay overnight on one of the islands.

You can book San Blas Islands tours here . There are several options to choose from. We booked with San Blas Dreams.

9. Visit Taboga Island or Pearl Islands

A fun day trip from Panama City is visiting Taboga Island or one of the Pearl Islands.

Taboga Island is only 20 km from Panama City. The Taboga Express Fast Ferry takes 30 minutes from Panama City to Taboga. The ferry departs multiple times per day. More info on tickets and schedule here . The ferry terminal is located at Fuerte Amador Mall on Isla Flamenco (Amador Causeway).

Contadora Island is the most popular of the Pearl Islands for tourists.

We spent a few nights on Contadora Island . Read about that experience here .

Similar to the San Blas Islands mentioned above, we recommend you stay overnight on Contadora Island. This will give you time to properly relax on the beach and explore the island. However, if you’re tight on time, a day trip to Contadora Island is possible.

The ferry from Panama City to Contadora takes 90 minutes (each way).

10. Relax at Rooftop pool

We are guilty of trying to do too much on our family vacations. Yes, we want to have as many travel experiences as possible, but we also want to enjoy some downtime by the pool.

Fortunately, many Panama City hotels have rooftop pools with awesome views.

We spent many hours relaxing by the pool. The climate in Panama is typically hot and sunny, so it’s important to slow down and take advantage of this tropical environment.

Try to schedule some time each day to relax by the pool, especially if you’re traveling to Panama with kids. When we ask our boys what they remember about our trip to Panama, the rooftop pools always come up.

See below for a few Panama City hotels with rooftop pools.

Where to stay in Panama City Panama

There are many hotels in Panama City, so you have plenty of options at each price point. We typically stay in mid-range hotels when we travel as a family.

Your dollar will go much further in Panama City, when compared to other big cities. Would you believe the hotel pictured above (and below) only cost us $100 CDN per night?

During our time in Panama City, we stayed at 3 different hotels.

  • Marriott Executive Apartments Finisterre – we like this property because it has 1-bedroom apartment style rooms. It has a restaurant, rooftop pool and it’s located within walking distance to Cinta Costera, Iglesia del Carmen Cathedral and plenty of restaurant options.
  • Residence Inn by Marriott Panama City – this is a new property that is connected to a shopping center. Rooms are modern, spacious and very nice (see photo below). The rooftop pool has incredible views of the ocean and city. It’s also priced very well – you get a lot of value at this hotel.
  • Plaza Paitilla Inn Hotel – this hotel is inexpensive and centrally located on Cinta Costera. It’s an older hotel, however we stayed in a newly renovated room. It has an outdoor pool and restaurant with nice views of the city and ocean.

After wandering the old streets of Casco Viejo, we would recommend staying in that neighbourhood. We did not stay at a hotel in Casco Veijo this time, but we will when we return to Panama City in the future.

How to get around Panama City

If you plan to use a taxi, it’s safer to hire the taxi from your hotel, instead of flagging a random taxi on the street. Prices will vary depending on where you are staying.

We prefer to use Uber for transportation around Panama City. It works great and removes language barriers.

You don’t need to download a different Uber app. The app you use in Canada or the US works fine in Panama City.

By using the Uber app, you avoid giving bad directions or having issues explaining where you want to go. You also don’t have to worry about exchanging money, so it removes the fear of getting ripped off by an opportunistic taxi driver.

We felt much safer taking an Uber in Panama City.

36 Hours in Panama City, Panama

By Freda Moon Updated March 30, 2023

  • Share full article

A family rides in a quadricycle along a paved pathway, bordered by manicured green grass, along a waterfront. The sun is setting behind a cloud, sending rays of sunlight shooting across the sky.

Panama City, the perpetually flowering capital of Panama — the small tropical country that bridges North and South America — has been fought over since its founding. The city and commercial hub, famous for the engineering marvel that is its canal, is among the unsung cosmopolitan capitals of the Americas. Flashy highrises and an eclectic culinary landscape — which includes neighborhood canteens, dim sum palaces, French bistros and kosher supermarkets — reflect the city’s international character. Panama City is also where you can feel history under your feet. The Museo Canal , celebrating its 25th anniversary, has a new permanent exhibition on the country’s route to sovereignty, including the United States’s handover of the Panama Canal in 1999, that provides visitors with much-needed context for this place that manages to be very much itself, while also a bit of everywhere else.

Recommendations

  • The Amador Causeway has views of the city and the canal. It also offers a path to find wildlife at the Punta Culebra Nature Center and refreshment at Capitán Bahía .
  • Museo de la Mola displays the distinctive textile art of the Indigenous Guna people, including 200 colorfully appliquéd mola. It also offers interactive and immersive exhibits.
  • Fonda Lo Que Hay serves shareable dishes that celebrate Panama’s bicoastal, international food culture in a festive, music-filled setting.
  • Mayda bar serves classy cocktails in a historic former social club overlooking Panama Bay in Casco Viejo.
  • Mentiritas Blancas , in the Cangrejo neighborhood, has house-roasted specialty coffee that you can enjoy over a hearty breakfast and buy as gifts.
  • Maito is a worthwhile splurge in Coco del Mar with a tasting menu of artful, regional dishes influenced by the country’s history.
  • El Trapiche , on Vía Argentina, is a beloved local institution serving hearty and flavorful Panamanian dishes at affordable prices.
  • Keene’s is a favorite for brightly hued, tropically inspired ice cream, including vegan options.
  • Selina ’s rooftop bar in Casco Viejo is the place to end the night with Latin music and people watching.
  • Café Unido , Panama City’s hometown coffee chain, has excellent breakfast sandwiches and a full morning menu.

Doubles start from about $300. (Prices are listed in U.S. dollars, which are accepted as legal tender alongside the balboa.)
  • The towering InterContinental Miramar Panama may not have the character of the boutique hotels in Casco Viejo, but its convenient location in the center of the city, walkable to both San Francisco and the historic quarter, along with its wide ocean views and its resort-like swimming pool are hard to beat at this price. Doubles from about $165.
  • Hotel Casa Magnolia Inn , housed in a restored French colonial mansion, is a small hotel and hostel in the heart of Casco Viejo with basic but clean and comfortable rooms. Private doubles with ensuite bathrooms start from $80, and shared six-bed dorm rooms start from $16 per bed.

Panama City, Panama is not one of those capital cities that you should high-tail it out of as soon as possible after landing.

On the contrary, Panama City has a lot to offer! There are so many things to do in Panama City that any tourist should plan to spend at least two full days here. As one of the best places to visit in the country , don’t skip it. Trust me.

A cargo ship on the water - the Panama Canal is one of The Best Things to Do in Panama City, Panama.

The Panama Canal

I’d be remiss if I didn’t start off this list with the most well known tourist attraction in all of Panama: The Panama Canal . You simply can’t visit Panama and not see one of the most significant accomplishments in the history of Panama.

The Miraflores Locks Visitor Center is the closest Panama Canal viewpoint to Panama City, so it is the most popular, hands down. Just 20 minutes from Panama City, this tourist stop has a 4th story viewing platform, a small museum, an IMAX movie theatre, and a gift shop.

Between the hours of 9-11am and 3-5pm, you get to view the locks in action as large cargo ships pass by. Tickets cost $15 USD for foreign adults. Read my in depth guide to visiting the Panama Canal before you go!

Want the ease of a guided tour? Check out  this combo tour  of the Panama Canal and Panama City sights. I recommend a tour like this if you don’t plan on booking a rental car and want someone else to do the legwork.

Monica strolling Casco Viejo, one of The Best Things to Do in Panama City, Panama.

Casco Viejo

Casco Viejo is a popular neighborhood in Panama City, and is where most tourists book their accommodations . Compared to the chaotic Panama City metropolis, Casco Viejo showcases charming buildings, educational museums, historic churches, and greaat eateries.

Old Spanish colonial buildings have been converted into boutique hotels, apartments, restaurants, and bars. Other buildings sit in ruins, sprinkled between their trendier counterparts. Tourist shops and local eateries are on every corner.

Walk Casco Viejo and take time to read the informative plaques, explore the old ruins, and relax in the town squares. Prefer a tour guide? Book a Casco Viejo Walking Tour to get your bearings! Do this on Day One if possible, and then you’ll feel confident navigating the town for the rest of your trip.

One thing to be aware of, Casco Viejo was more expensive than I had expected. Overall, Panama is not the cheapest country in Central America, but some food costs, hotel costs, and shops here were about what I would expect pay in the USA.

Monica visiting Panama Viejo, one of The Best Things to Do in Panama City, Panama.

Panama Viejo

Another worthy historical place to see in Panama City is Panama Viejo. Panama Viejo is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and was the location of the original Panama City.

What you will see today are the crumbling ruins of the original site. Just a couple of structures still stand (or partially stand), and modern Panama City shines in the distance.

Panama Viejo was abandoned in the mid-17th century and relocated to where Casco Viejo sits today. The pirate Captain Morgan reportedly burned down the city, leaving the ruins that you can explore today.

If you want to visit solo, it is completely possible to take a taxi here. Panama Viejo is roughly 15 minutes from Panama City and has a $12 entrance fee.

Alternately, if you prefer a guided tour of Panama Viejo, you can book that here . This is the option to choose if you want a low stress day and want a guide to teach you more of the history, which is fascinating.

I highly recommend going!

The Cinta Costera Panama sign

If you visit a country and don’t get a photo in front of their colorful sign-boards, did you really even go?

I joke. But, the Cinta Costera is a beautiful, walkable stretch of land where tourists can go running, biking, use free workout equipment, practice yoga, or more.

Right on the waterfront, this popular spot is nothing short of beautiful – but it gets hot! I recommend visiting early in the day, near sunrise, or later in the day, closer to sunset.

The colorful Panama sign - one of The Best Things to see in Panama City, Panama.

The Amador Causeway

Much like the Cinta Costera above, the Amador Causeway is a long coastal stroll that leads to another Panama sign. However, this one’s origin is fascinating.

The Amador Causeway was built from the massive amounts of earth removed in order to build the Panama Canal?. it is a 4-mile long walkway that connects to a nearby island and offers great views of the city from a distance.

Bonus – the Amador Causeway is a great place to watch container ships enter into the canal, but – in my opinion – is not in lieu of heading to Miraflores Locks. Locals enjoy biking, walking, and running on the Causeway, and you should, too!

A tamarind monkey in the trees, seen on a boat tour - one of The Best Things to Do in Panama City, Panama.

A Monkey Island Boat Tour

If you have read any of my other Panama guides, then you know I absolutely loved my Monkey Island Day Tour !

Contrary to the sound of it, Monkey Island is not just one island. Rather, it is a collection of small islands in the Gatun Lake and one of the best tours in Panama City. Well, if you like cute and fluffy monkeys, that is.

Three types of monkeys live in this area – White faced monkeys, Tamarindo monkeys, and Howler Monkeys. I got lucky, and the first two species actually climbed onto my boat! So I got to see these cuties up close and personal.

If you love observing wildlife, then a visit to Monkey Island is going to be one of your favorite things to do in Panama City.

The Museo Canal

Located in the heart of Casco Viejo, this museum is what made my visit to the Panama Canal meaningful.

Before visiting this museum, I had a vague recollection of the Canal’s history, but had no idea about the timeline and scandals met while building this modern marvel. I highly recommend that everyone visits this museum prior to their Panama Canal trip, because you will have a significantly deeper understanding and appreciation of what is sometimes called the Eighth Wonder of the World.

A ticket costs $15 USD for foreign adults and is well worth the price.

A sloth just outside of Panama City on a hiking trail.

Panama Metropolitan Nature Park

If you are a hiker or nature-lover like me, then you should plan for an early morning hike in the Panama Metropolitan Nature Park. This land is a protected rainforest, and provides important environmental services to the residents of Panama City.

With both easy and moderate hiking trails, this is an easy day trip from Panama City/You will likely see loads of wildlife like I did, such as monkeys, sloths, deer, and iguanas. Oh, and birds! Loads of birds. Definitely visit early if you want to see the wildlife – many of them will sleep during the heat of day.

The entrance fee is $5 USD and a trail map is $1.50.

The Mola Museum

If you plan to visit the San Blas islands in Panama (to which I say you must !) then you should first visit the Mola Museum.

Officially called Museo de la Mo, this museum teaches visitors all about the artwork and the meaning behind the intricate tapestries created by the Guna people. The Guna people are the indigenous tribespeople that still live on the San Blas Islands today.

The Mola Museum is completely free to visit. So, basically you have no excuse!

Mercado de Mariscos

Though I am a vegetarian, I feel I’d be remiss not to mention the Mercado de Mariscos to all of the non-veg travelers out there! This is a very popular sot for fresh caught seafood.

This casual market is part fish stalls and part dining establishments. Loads of restaurant hosts will try to pull you into their restaurants with this or that special. One tip I was given, be sure to establish the prices before you dine. Some visitors have reported being surprised by extremely large bills after the fact.

What Are The Best Places to Visit Beyond Panama City?

Monica on the San Blas islands, one of the best day trips from Panama City, Panama.

The San Blas Islands

In case I didn’t make it clear above, I absolutely loved the San Blas Islands. If you want to experience true tranquility,

You can find my full multi-day experience of visiting San Blas on the blog, but let me sum it up with this:

The San Blas islands are beautiful, small islands littered with palm trees that dot the crystal clear Caribbean Sea. Most of them are calm, relaxed, and nearly empty, though a few have either permanent local or temporary tourist communities on site.

I visited San Blas at the end fo my trip, and it was the absolute best way to close out my experience in Panama. Highly recommend!

Celestine Waterfall, one of the best The Best Things to Do in Panama City, Panama.

This area of Chiriqui is about as different as can be from both city or island life. Up in the mountainous cloud forests, the temperatures are much cooler and the landscape more lush.

I highly enjoyed hiking tp the Celestine Waterfall and visiting a local Panamanian farmhouse. Picture jungles, mountains, and a spectacular view of Volcan Baru.

Note that, if you do travel here, you will need to plan in advance what to pack for Panama . The climates across Panama are varied so anyone who travels to different provinces should be prepared.

Bocas del Toro

Bocas del Toro are the more lively group of islands in Panama. If you are looking for a party more than a laid-back beach trip, then these islands might be for you. Parties, clubs, and blaring music are all to be expected in Bocas Town as well as several other areas.

It all depends what you want for your trip! And, if you have time on your Panama Itinerary , then try and squeeze in both islands to compare and contrast.

Check out my Best Places to Visit in Panama guide for more suggestions!

I hope this list of the best things to do in Panama City helps you to have a great time! Panama city is definitely an area not to be missed!

16 things to know before you visit Panama City, Panama

Glossy showrooms, high-rise condos and luxury shopping malls illuminate Panama City’s banking district.

This has been the epicenter of prodigious real estate development in recent years. Panama City is an international banking center and global trans-shipment hub with generous offshore tax structures and strong secrecy laws. Dubious money, laundered through real estate, has been transforming the city’s oceanfront since the Noriega years. Despite this chequered past and present, it's important to remember that as a tourist in Panama City, you’re highly unlikely to encounter cartel-related violence.

It’s safe to travel alone. The banking district is well policed, at least during the day, and most crimes are the low-key and opportunistic type you'll encounter in any major city. Parts of the city are rough and tumble, others are no-go, but most are benign. You will have no problems if you stay alert and follow big city rules.

From planning your trip to local etiquette, here’s what you need to know before traveling to Panama City.

1. Study a map before choosing where to stay

Every neighborhood has its advantages and disadvantages. With cobblestone streets and Spanish colonial architecture, the historic quarter of Casco Antiguo is the most memorable and romantic part of the city. It has a plethora of high-end restaurants, luxury lofts and swanky rooftop bars, but a dearth of budget-friendly eateries and its public transport links aren’t the best.

The Calidonia district in the southern part of the city occupies a grid of streets from Plaza 5 de Mayo to Calle 42 Este. Avenida Central bustles with market stalls, and the roads to the south are dotted with budget-friendly hotels. The district is near plenty of Metro trains and buses . You can pick up cheap street food during the day when kitchens open for local hospital staff and civil servants. After dark, however, Calidonia becomes shady and downbeat with limited dining options.

To the east of Calidonia, the so-called banking district is a patchwork of several districts or corregimientos , including modern and emerging neighborhoods that host the lion’s share of high-end lodgings and Airbnb rentals. There are a few hostels and not nearly enough economical hotels. Many decent restaurants are dispersed throughout the banking district but are not always within walking distance.

If you’re in town to party, the Marbella and Bella Vista neighborhoods have great access to the bars and clubs on Calle Uruguay. El Cangrejo is an entertainment zone with a casino, good Metro train links on Vía España and a parade of restaurants on Vía Argentina.

2. Time your visit for budget-friendly deals and great weather

The high season coincides with the dry season , mid-December to early April, when prices are generally higher. The major festivals of Christmas, New Year, Carnival and Semana Santa see a price increase in the capital, but not as much as the beaches , where most city-dwellers spend the holidays.

Mid-April to early December is the cheapest time to visit Panama City, as long as you don’t mind getting soaked by the rain. Most deluges last only an hour or two in the afternoon, but the season gets wetter as it goes on. In the depths of it, the skies can be overcast for days, but the rains are usually intermittent, and the cloud cover can bring relief from the relentless Panamanian sun.

3. You're better off with a Metro card than a car

Although a car is good for day trips out of town, don’t plan on driving much in the city. The one-way road system is baffling, city thoroughfares are often congested, and diversions are par for the course.

Instead, use Panama City’s public transport system , which includes a fleet of air-conditioned buses and Central America’s first-ever Metro train. Buy a three-in-one “Rapi-pass” upon arrival and gain access to Metro trains and buses and the departure gates at Albrook bus station.

4. Always keep a stash of low-denomination bills

You'll need to show your ID and sign a register if you pay for anything with a higher bill than USD$20. Counterfeit money is an issue in the country, so all $50 and $100 bills will be scrutinized in Panama.

5. Don’t smoke in public

Legislation introduced in 2008 banned smoking in public places. People who smoke in non-designated areas are subject to fines of $25–100.

6. Dress for comfort but look sharp

Panamanians like to dress up and look their best. The ostentatious displays of fashion on display in Obarrio include stiletto heels that somehow survive the assault course of the city’s pavements. When socializing, casual attire is fine, but avoid wearing shorts and sandals to nice restaurants or social functions.

7. Tip hotel cleaning staff

If you stay in a hotel, leave a tip for the person who cleans your room – USD$2–3 a day is fine. A 10% tip is often added in good restaurants, but not always – check the bill before paying. In low-key local eateries, you may leave some loose change for the server. Unless they help with luggage, taxi drivers don’t expect a tip.

8. Don’t use drugs

Although Panama City is steeped in narco dollars, Panamanian society frowns on drug use, and the law does not tolerate it. If the police find you in possession of even small quantities of marijuana, you could spend several years in a Panamanian prison.

9. Don’t expect people to speak English

Panama City Spanish is Caribbean Spanish, extremely fast and heavily laden with jerga (slang). If Spanish is not your first language, you may struggle to catch it.

Don’t expect to find many English speakers during your day-to-day transactions. English is widely spoken in the business community, but not much outside of it, and mastering a few basic phrases of Spanish will help you get around.

10. It's safe to drink tap water

The tap water in Panama City is perfectly safe to drink. Save on plastic waste by refilling water bottles at a faucet. If you prefer purified water, you can refill at the 20-liter garrafones in most hotel lobbies.

11. Prepare for environmental hazards

Panama City is an urban hothouse scratched out of the jungle. The elements are fierce – humidity is often 100%. You should take a day or two to relax and acclimate to the heat if you come from a cold-weather country.

Always apply sunscreen before going outside and keep an adequate water supply handy. Wear light clothes and a hat to keep the sun off your face. Bring a sturdy umbrella if you visit during the wet season.

Panama City suffers from flash floods during heavy downpours. If you get caught in a storm, you could end up wading through deep puddles. Traffic is generally heavy, and many parts of the city are not pedestrian-friendly. People living with asthma may find their symptoms are aggravated by fumes.

Sadly, the Bay of Panama is a dump for industrial effluence and untreated sewage, so the oceanfront malecón sometimes reeks.

12. Be aware of common scams

Scammers operate in all big cities, and some target tourists. Be wary of strangers who tell unfortunate and earnest stories that end with them asking for money. If it seems suspicious, it probably is. Watch out for fake tour guides who ask for payment in advance and then stand you up.

Old-school taxi scams that involve going around the houses to increase the fare can happen anywhere in the world, but in Panama City, it’s common for taxis to simply overcharge. There are no meters in the cabs. Fares are supposed to be based on zones, but in practice, they rarely are. If you look foreign, taxi drivers will bump up the fare. It's best to negotiate and agree on the price beforehand.

13. Solo female travelers may receive unwanted attention

Panama City is typically safe for solo female travelers, but it's best to avoid walking alone at night in Casco Antiguo, Santa Ana or Calidonia. Women may receive attention from chatty men on Metro trains or buses. If a man won’t leave you alone, ask a nearby older woman to assist.

14. Steer clear of sketchy neighborhoods

Thirty years ago, Casco Antiguo was dicey. Today, things have somewhat improved, but there are still pockets of the old neighborhood where you should exercise caution. If you’re staying in Casco Antiguo, the 20-minute walk from the nearest Metro train station, 5 de Mayo, is risky at night. Use a taxi or an Uber instead. To the west of Casco Antiguo, the neighboring El Chorrillo district is very dangerous and neglected. You should avoid this neighborhood entirely.

The district of Santa Ana, north of Casco Antiguo, is bisected by the pedestrianized peatonal , a lively shopping street that is safe to walk during the day; stay alert in the crowds. The side roads east of the peatonal are sketchy, and you shouldn’t wander around them. At its north end, the peatonal connects with Plaza 5 de Mayo, the National Assembly, a Metro station, a bus terminal and a grimy confluence of roads and flyovers. The area is lively into the evening, but stay alert and use a vehicle after 11pm.

North of 5 de Mayo, Avenida Central strikes into Calidonia district with street vendors and hustle. It's fine to explore in the day, but don’t flaunt expensive equipment or jewelry. Calidonia is spooky and seedy after dark. Avoid run-down or poorly lit streets.

15. Keep your documents handy

Everyone is legally required to carry a photo ID at all times in public in Panama. Tourists should carry their passport or a photocopy of their passport with the photo page and immigration entry stamp.

16. LGBTIQ+ travelers are welcome

Attitudes in rural Panama are somewhat conservative but less so in Panama City. LGBTIQ+ travelers are unlikely to encounter prejudice, and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is prohibited by Panamanian law. There’s a lively gay scene in Casco Antiguo and El Cangrejo.

What to do in Panama City Panama: 12 must-do tourist attractions

Wondering what to do in Panama city Panama? Here are the best things to do in Panama that you need to include in your itinerary.

Are you looking for activities in Panama City Panama ? A while ago, we visited the city during a layover in Panama, but now we came back and spent more time going around some of the must-do tourist attractions in Panama that were left pending (apart from repeating others that you can’t miss when visiting Panama).

That’s why in this article I’m going to tell you the 12 best things to do in Panama City and some unique places you definitely should pay a visit to in the surroundings, so that you can organize your trip with all the information you need.

Things to do in Panama City Panama

¿Qué encontrarás en este artículo?

How to visit Panama City?

To go around the city, you can chose the following options:

➤ On your own.

➤ With tours that take you to the most important places.

➤ A combination of both.

Apart from how you decide to visit the city, the most important thing you should take into account is choosing the best areas where to stay in Panama ; they need to be safe and near the tourist attractions in the city. A good option in the city is Riu Plaza hotel , or a cheaper option is Marbella hotel .

If you’re going on your own, you can walk short distances or use public transport called Metrobus. To use it, you have to buy a card that costs 5 dollars and has 2 dollars in it and you can top it up in the machines at the train stations. Each route costs between 25 and 50 cents, and you can also use it to go from the airport to the center of Panama, which is a very cheap way of getting there.

As for visiting the city on tour , you can pick tours to visit the most important places of the city and get picked up from your accommodation, or book walking tours that, for instance, take you to the historic center or other places of interest.

⭐ Book here a guided tour in English .

Maybe the best option would be to combine both going on your own and tours. By going on tours, you can visit the places that are far away and more complicated to get to, such as the Panama Canal or visiting the ruins of old Panama.

⭐ Book here a complete tour: city tour + Panama canal.

➤ Are you looking for more independence and safety ? An alternative that can be quite comfortable if you don’t want neither to go on tours nor using public transport is buying the ticket for the tourist hop-on hop-off type of bus , which has stops in plenty of the must-see places in the city of Panama which I’ll refer to in this travel guide, even places far away such as the Panama Canal. You can hop on and hop off the bus at the stop you want and the ticket is valid for the entire day. You can get it for 24 or 48 hours with an audio guide in Spanish, English and Portuguese.

🚍 Check price & book the tourist bus .

Best things to do in Panama City Panamá: 12 must-do plans

1. walking around the historic center of panama: casco viejo.

The historic center or Casco Viejo is the most picturesque area to visit in Panama. This neighborhood that dates back to the 1600s has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was founded after the first city, called Panama La Vieja , was destroyed in 1671.

The stone pavement and the pastel-colored colonial facades at times make you feel like you’re in Cartagena de Indias , but better. This sector was one that greatly surprised us, since we saw it much more restored and cared for than when we visited it a few years before.

The historic center of Panama isn’t big, but it’s worth spending a couple of hours walking around its streets, its plazas and taking pictures of its corners. Plus, it has some must-do trips to do in Panama , which I’ll mention in detail next.

To better get to know the historic center and its history, I recommend taking a guided tour so that you get to know fun facts, the main spots of the historic center, and much more interesting data.

A good option is going on a free walking tour as soon as you get to the city. You can book these tours completely for free and then, at the end of the tour, you give the guide a tip taking into consideration how much you liked the tour and the guide’s dedication.

There’s a free tour dedicated to visiting the most important places of the Casco Viejo ( ➥ Book it here! ), and, if you have enough time, you can complement it with another very interesting tour dedicated to the city’s mysteries and legends (➥ Book it here! ) .

Another option would be to hire a traditional professional guided tour , which are cheap and take you around the best places of the neighborhood (➥ Book it here! ). This alternative is ideal if you want to make sure you can do the guided tour on a certain day (since the free tours do not leave if there are few people), as well as if you want a more extensive tour (which includes a visit to the Panama Canal or the ruins of Old Panama). There is also the option of hiring private guided tours where you can even choose the number of hours to customize it to your liking.

2. Visiting churches

There are several churches you can visit in the historic center. The ones I recommend adding to your trip around the city and not miss are:

  • Santa Maria la Antigua Basilica : it’s Panama’s Cathedral, built in stone in the 18th century (it reminded us a bit of the one in La Habana, Cuba).
  • San Francisco de Asis Church : when looking at the historic center for afar, the church’s bell tower stands out. It is worth going inside, since a few months a year, at the top floor, there’s a huge and beautiful manger, as well as a Christmas villa.
  • San Jose Church : it’s most famous characteristic of this 17th century church is its gold altar.
  • La Merced : a small 17th century church.

What caught our attention is that several of them had air conditioning, so inside it was super cool and they were also spotless.

Of course there are other churches in Panama outside the Casco Viejo, and we visited two churches that were near our hotel , which were Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church and Parroquia Santuario Nacional del Corazon de Maria . Both were pretty and worth checking out if you’re around.

3. Convento Santo Domingo and Arco Chato Ruins

Convento Santo Domingo is one of the most photographed places of the historic center of Panama. It is a place in ruins due to two fires in the mid 1700s.

I recommend stopping by Arco Chato , which is considered by many to be an engineering marvel, defying the laws of gravity. For many years, it stood until in 2003 it collapsed and was rebuilt using a metal beam.

4. Walking around Paseo de las Bovedas

Paseo de las Bovedas is ideal for walking during sunset, since there are craft fairs (we saw many which were organized by the indigenous community Guna from the San Blas islands) under a big pergola, apart from the views to the sea and the historic center of the city. The trip ends in Plaza de Francia.

5. Eating fish at Mercado de Marisco, or Seafood Market

If you enjoy fish or seafood, there’s a good option for lunch at Mercado de Marisco . It’s at the border of the historic center and opens from 6 am to 5pm; there you can buy fresh fish, but the best thing is that at lunch time there are several restaurants. We chose one where several local people were eating.

The most common thing to order is ceviche , but we picked a white snapper and a red snapper , with a side of rice, coconut, patacones and salad. It was delicious and abundant, though a bit more expensive than what we paid for the rest of the trip around Panama.

6. Visiting Panama Canal, a unique thing to do in Panama!

Without a doubt, this is a must-do activity in Panama .

The canal , 80 kilometers long which joins the Atlantic with the Pacific Ocean, is one of the greatest engineering works that you can visit in the current world.

It has three sets of locks that bear the names of the towns where they were built:

  • Gatun Locks , approximately two kilometers long on the Atlantic side.
  • Miraflores Lock on the Pacific side.
  • Pedro Miguel , in the center.

The Miraflores Visitor Center is the closest to Panama City, and for that reason it is a typical visit. The tour consists of a video about the construction of the Canal, a multi-story museum and, most impressive, the exit to the terrace to see the large ships pass through the locks. Each ship pays a toll to cross the canal according to its length.

This time we didn’t go because we had already visited it when we made a stopover in Panama a few years ago, but if it’s your first time in the city, I think it’s a must see in Panama City .

They are far from the center, so the easiest way to visit them is on an excursion that lasts about 4 hours and includes all transfers. Or else the hop-on-hop-off tourist bus goes to the Panama Canal.

Something that we still have pending for another trip is to go to the Gamboa area and navigate the canal to Gatun Lake . There are also excursions where you cross the channel on a cruise ➥ Book it here!

💯 Book here the Panama Canal tour & Gamboa lake .

Brief summary of the history of the Panama Canal

The first effort to build the Panama Canal was made by the French in the 19th century, but after 5 years, the work was suspended due to epidemics such as malaria and yellow fever. The French company declared bankruptcy and, at the beginning of 1900, the United States bought the rights and properties for 40 million dollars and thus began the construction of the Panama Canal.

The total construction took 10 years, thanks to the labor of more than 75 thousand men and women. Around $400 million were invested and these were very difficult times due to the adversities of the time, mainly tropical diseases.

It was finally inaugurated in 1914 and, thanks to a series of treaties, on December 31, 1999, absolute control of the Canal passed into Panamanian hands.

7. Walking along the coastal strip or boardwalk

One of the most beautiful walks to do in Panama is to go for a walk along the coastal strip, from the historic center to Punta Paitilla. It is beautiful, with a wide path to walk or run, a bike path, all very green with flowers and well-kept gardens.

In addition, you will not only enjoy views of the sea but you will also have one of the best panoramic views of the historic center, the financial sector and Punta Pacífica with its glass-enclosed skyscrapers. Halfway through the tour, you will be able to take a photo with the letters of Panama.

If you also visit Panama on a Sunday, the coastal avenue is closed in the morning for pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy. There are places to rent bicycles or scooters, fresh water stalls, soft drinks and natural juices, people doing yoga classes, etc.

Without a doubt, touring this area on a Sunday morning is one of the best things to do in Panama during the weekend .

8. The ruins of Panama Viejo or Panama la Vieja

This archaeological site is located where Panama City was originally founded in 1519, before moving to what would be the historic center today. From here, the expeditions for the conquest of the Inca Empire of Peru left in 1532.

The reason for its transfer? Its commercial importance attracted the attention of pirates and, in 1671, it was attacked and sacked by the English pirate Henry Morgan, leaving it completely in ruins.

You can visit it from Tuesdays to Sundays. More information is on its official website .

⭐ Book here a Panama Viejo guided tour with transfers .

9. Calzada de Amador, or Amador Causeway

The Amador Causeway is a road that goes into the sea and joins several islands in the bay, offering beautiful views of the city .

It is a place where locals and expatriates go for a walk, run or fish, and at the end of the tour there are restaurants, shops, a yacht club and the Biomuseo, designed by architect Frank Gehry and focused on the natural history of Panama.

If you look at the map, you will see that it is relatively close to the historic center, but even if you like to walk I recommend not going on foot , since to get there you would have to cross one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Panama, El Chorrillo .

In my opinion, it is worth going to the Amador Causeway only if you have plenty of time in the city, otherwise, it seems better to prioritize other of the visits that I mentioned to do in Panama.

In case you do the complete tour of Panama , they will take you to see this site and you will not have to worry about transfers or security. Also, the hop-on-hop-off tourist bus has one of its stops here.

From the Amador Causeway there are some boat excursions to Isla Contadora or Taboga island , so if you do any of them, you could visit this area the day you do the excursion.

10. Going shopping

No list of things to do in Panama would be complete without mentioning shopping in the city’s large malls.

Although it is not one of our favorite activities, I must admit that you can get interesting prices both in electronics and in the top brand clothing outlets.

You must always keep in mind that getting good or bad prices depends not only on the time of year and offers, but also on what prices you are used to in the country you’re from.

So, which are the most important shopping centers? If you stay in Panama in the Bellavista area, you will find Multicentro and Multiplaza nearby. Otherwise, if you have time, Albrook is huge and can be easily accessed by the metrobus public transport system, or there are even shopping tours that take you there. The hop-on-hop-off tourist bus also has one of its stops at the Albrook shopping mall.

11. Climbing Ancón Hill

This 199-meter hill is a nature reserve very close to the city center, and due to its height, it offers good views of the buildings of the financial district.

12. Having a drink on a trendy rooftop

Something that has become fashionable in recent years is to go for a cocktail or a beer at sunset at one of the rooftop bars in the historic center. Apart from having a good time with good music, you will enjoy beautiful views of the city.

Some of the best known are the rooftop of the Selina hotel , Lazotea Jorge Rausch or the terrace of the Tántalo hotel .

beautiful views casco viejo Panama

What to do in Panama City at night?

A good plan for the sunset is what I mentioned before: going to a rooftop . But, if you want something different, you always have to keep in mind how to keep an eye out, as in every Latin American capital.

For example, you can go to dinner at a restaurant with views of the city that offers a show and includes transfers to and from the accommodation ( ➥ Book it here! ). There is also the option of booking a night tour of the city to which you can add a dinner in the historic center ( ➥ Book it here! ). The advantage of these options is that they pick you up and return you to your hotel, so you don’t have to worry about transfers or security .

If you are looking for more fun and going out to discover the Panamanian nightlife , I recommend you book a Pub Crawl where they take you to see 7 trendy pubs without having to worry about transportation, and it includes a free drink in each pub!

What to visit around Panama

Taking Panama City as a base, there are several places you can visit in the surroundings . You would have to think about dedicating a day to each one, since most can be done as an excursion from Panama.

Some places to consider are:

  • Gamboa and Gatun Lake .
  • Playa Blanca and Farallon.
  • Visiting the Portobelo forts .
  • Some island, such as Taboga or Contadora .
  • Going to the San Blas Islands .
  • Going hiking in the Soberanía National Park .

Things to do in Panama City Panama: FAQs

Is it worth visiting panama city.

Of course it is! I don’t think there are cities that aren’t worth a visit, but specifically Panama City has many things to offer as I showed throughout the article. It is an ideal destination to complement with a tour of the country or even with other places in the Caribbean or Central America.

How many days does it take to visit Panama City?

If you only want to visit the essential places to see in the city, two or three days would be enough.

If you also want to visit the surroundings of Panama, you will have to add at least one extra day for each destination.

For example, if you want to visit the most important tourist attractions in Panama, take the tour to Isla Taboga and navigate through the Panama Canal, you will have to consider at least 4 days in Panama City. If, on the contrary, you want to know the main part of the city and take a 3-day excursion to San Blas , you will have to dedicate 6 days (2 at the beginning, the 3 days of excursion, and 1 day at the end in the city before taking the flight).

If I have little time, is it worth going to the Panama Canal?

Visiting the Panama Canal is one of the most interesting things to do in Panama , since it is something unique in the world. But it is a very personal decision. If you don’t like those types of activities or you have little time, I don’t think it makes much sense to invest it in something that doesn’t appeal to you. There are many other activities to do in the city!

Is it safe to visit Panama City on foot?

If you walk through the Casco Viejo, or historic center, area or the coastal strip, it is very safe. Leaving the historic center, there is a dangerous neighborhood, so it is best to stay within the tourist area. To climb Ancón Hill, the best option is by excursion.

Even so, as in every Latin American city, there are areas that are safer than others and you always need to have common sense : do not show valuables, do not walk through dark areas or without people at night, etc. It does seem essential to me to choose one of the best areas to stay in Panama City , since it is important that coming and going from the accommodation is safe .

As I mentioned previously, a good option to move at a good price and safely between different tourist areas that are far from each other is getting the tourist bus ticket .

Another very important detail to keep in mind is that you always travel with travel assistance . It is better to have it and not use it than to need it and not have it. I say this out of extensive experience! There are also cheap plans ( take a look at these options ). Don’t save on health when you travel!

Is the rest of the country worth visiting?

Of course! Panama City is just the entry point to an incredible country . We made a 20-day itinerary through Panama that surprised us a lot. Beaches, jungle, hiking options, little mass tourism for now (unlike Costa Rica, for example).

We visited incredible places like Playa Cambutal, Playa Venao, Bocas del Toro or the beaches of Pedasí, among many others, and it was a spectacular trip.

11 Top-Rated Attractions & Things to Do in Panama

Written by Lana Law Updated May 11, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Author Lana Law loves exploring the islands, beaches, and history of Panama.

Panama's small geographic area packs in a diverse range of landscapes, interesting towns and cities, and a myriad of vacation possibilities. Beautiful beaches and islands can be found along both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, and the mountainous interior is home to coffee plantations, small towns, waterfalls, wildlife, and some wonderful hiking trails.

Hummingbird at Finca Lerida Lodge, Boquete

In Panama City, you'll find a modern metropolis with shopping, dining, and an assortment of tourist attractions and things to do, including the country's most famous site, the Panama Canal.

Most first-time visitors head to Casco Viejo, the Old Town, to soak up the atmosphere and see a little of the city's history. But for most visitors, Panama City is just a starting point before they head out on adventures to other parts of the country.

For ideas to help plan which places to visit on your trip, see our list of things to do in Panama.

1. See Ships Transiting through the Panama Canal

2. surf, dive & soak up the beaches of bocas del toro, 3. watch the sun go down on the sunset coast, 4. hiking & nature in boquete, 5. wander the narrow streets of casco viejo in panama city, 6. escape to the san blas islands, 7. surf at santa catalina & day trip to parque nacional coiba, 8. swim in the river at los cangilones, 9. kitesurf at punta chame, 10. enjoy a beach vacation at playa coronado, 11. get off the beaten path in santa fe and san francisco, map of attractions & things to do in panama, tips for renting a car & driving in panama, best time to visit panama.

Panama Canal

Highlight : Massive ships piled high with colorful containers moving slowly through the locks

Panama's most famous attraction is by far the Panama Canal, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Watching a massive ship, piled high with colorful containers, gliding quietly into the locks reveals the true enormity of this great feat of engineering. Taking a boat tour through the canal gives you even more perspective.

If you want to simply see the Panama Canal, the best place to do this is at the Miraflores Locks , about 25 minutes from downtown Panama City. You can see the canal from the five-story visitor center, complete with a small museum, a restaurant, and an IMAX theater in a separate building.

Bocas del Toro

Highlights : Wonderful beaches, unique townsite, and cheap accommodations

Bocas del Toro is Panama's main beach destination in the Caribbean. This collection of low-lying tropical islands, not far from the border with Costa Rica, is known for its outstanding soft-sand beaches lapped by crystal-clear, azure-colored waters.

The atmosphere here is beyond relaxed, with many young travelers coming to the area and, in some cases, staying for months or years. Things to do in Bocas del Toro include surfing, swimming, diving, or just lazing on the beach. Activities are generally cheap.

Although you can find luxury resorts with infinity pools, this is a budget-friendly destination, frequented by mainly singles or couples. The main town, also called Bocas del Toro or simply Bocas Town, is located on Isla Colon .

The town itself is not known for beaches, but you can find lovely stretches of sand on other parts of the island or by taking a boat to nearby islands. Some of the most popular are Bluff Beach, Starfish Beach, and Red Frog Beach.

Beach on Isla Colon, Bocas del Toro

Bocas del Toro has an airport on Isla Colon, which is how many travelers get to the islands. If you are exploring Panama by car or public transport, most people come here after a stop in Boquete. From Boquete, you can drive about 3.5 hours over the mountains to the town of Almirante, and from here, take a 25-minute boat ride to the town of Bocas del Toro.

Boat trip pricing is set by the government, and all boats charge the same amount. Parking in Almirante is safe and not expensive. Don't worry about finding the parking lots, touts will flag you down and direct you to their preferred lot, thereby earning themselves a small commission. This is a good investment if you are not familiar with the town.

Punta Duarte on the Sunset Coast

Highlights : A low-key destination away from the crowds, stunning beaches

One of the very few places in Panama where you can watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean, the Sunset Coast is an undiscovered area with small towns, wide open beaches, and a small number of lodges and inns where you can get away from the tourist scene.

This is rural Panama, home to rolling hills, small villages, family farms, and huge beaches lined by palms and forests. Foreign tourists are not plentiful the way they are in other areas of the country, and many of the visitors are Panamanian. The road down to the Sunset Coast from the Pan-American Highway is twisty and has a few potholes to dodge, but every mile takes you further off the beaten track.

Beaches along the Sunset Coast

This area is also popular with surfers. The wide-open beaches take the brunt of the Pacific Ocean rollers, and it's rare that you'll need to share a wave. If you want a beach all to yourself, this is the place to come.

Waterfalls near Boquete

Highlights : Waterfalls, hummingbirds, coffee plantations, hiking trails through the mountains

The mountain town of Boquete has a wonderful climate, where you can escape the sometimes oppressive heat of the coast and lower areas. The town is relaxed and safe, catering to expats and people escaping the winters in northern climates, and local Panamanians looking for a weekend getaway.

Some of the appeal here is the variety of good restaurants, as well as a mix of quality hotels and luxury inns. It's also one of Panama's most important coffee-growing areas, and known as a hot spot for nature and wildlife, particularly hiking and birdwatching.

Having a vehicle here is quite handy for touring the surrounding mountains and reaching trailheads and nearby sites, but you can also arrange tours with transportation to the coffee plantations.

One of the best short drives in Panama leaves from the outskirts of Boquete. This scenic loop of about 15 miles passes the main hiking trails, a beautiful river, an abandoned castle, and waterfalls. The road also provides amazing views down the valley and up the slopes of Volcan Baru.

Along the loop is Finca Lerida Lodge , with an outstanding restaurant. It's also one of the best places to visit to see birds in the area. This makes a nice lunch stop, where you can watch the non-stop hummingbird action.

Parque Nacional Volcan Baru near Boquete

Serious hikers can arrange to hike up the Baru volcano, leaving in the wee hours of the morning with a guide to be at the summit for sunrise. You can also tackle hikes like the popular Quetzal Trail (Sendero Los Quetzales), leaving from nearby Volcan Baru National Park, or one of several waterfall hikes off the loop road.

If you want to experience a little nature here without leaving Boquete, plan a stay at the quaint Boquete Garden Inn and enjoy breakfast outside while you watch the colorful birds dining at the feeders.

Casco Viejo

Highlights : A compact area of restored 18th and 19th-century buildings, good dining options

History surrounds you as you stroll through the narrow streets of Casco Viejo, also known as the Old Town. See colorful buildings, historic ruins, and great views out over the bay towards the gleaming towers of modern Panama City. This area is compact, and all the sights are within an easy stroll of one another.

In the evening, the buildings and ruins are creatively lit up, and restaurants set up tables and chairs on the sidewalks. Casco Viejo is ideal for a romantic getaway, with boutique hotels located in restored buildings dating from the 18th or 19th century.

A beach in the San Blas Islands

Highlights : Beautiful tropical islands best visited via luxury sailing charters

If you truly want to get off the beaten track and have a taste of adventure, a trip to the San Blas Islands might be just what you're looking for. Postcard-perfect islands with palm trees and crystal-clear water gently lapping the white-sand beaches are what this area is all about.

The most luxurious way to explore these islands is on a sailboat charter. Your captain will chart a course through this spectacular region, stopping at unbelievably beautiful spots. The boats are luxury catamarans, and cruises are anywhere from three to 21 days in length. All meals and beverages are included, and dining under the stars while the waves gently rock the boat is sublime.

If your budget doesn't allow for a crewed catamaran, economical options are available. However, you need to be prepared to bring out your inner Robinson Crusoe, as the accommodations are generally on the rustic side.

The only way to stay on these idyllic islands is to book a package with the local indigenous Guna people, which includes transport to, from, and around the islands, very rustic accommodation (no A/C), and three basic meals a day. This is a totally off-the-grid type of trip, so prepare accordingly, physically and mentally.

Parque Nacional Coiba

Highlights : Fun and funky town with a chill vibe, whale sharks off of Isla Coiba

One of Panama's top surf destinations on the Pacific Coast is Santa Catalina. This small but growing town has a laid-back surfer feeling about it. Small guesthouses and hotels, and funky restaurants, force you to slow down and relax.

If you aren't here to surf, great snorkeling and scuba diving spots are nearby, and horseback tours through the surrounding countryside are good options for those not interested in getting wet.

One of Santa Catalina's main draws is Isla Coiba . This lush island, now Coiba National Park , is almost untouched and is considered a biodiversity hot spot, with close to 200 bird species, crocodiles, turtles, and snakes.

Scuba diving here is very popular due to the enormous whale sharks that frequent the area. These gentle giants are curious creatures and enjoy interacting with divers. Tours to Isla Coiba can be arranged in Santa Catalina.

Swimming in the River at Los Cangilones

Highlights: A chance to hang with the locals and to practice your cliff jumping

One of the most fun things to do near Boquete is to visit the local swimming hole at Los Cangilones. Set at a lower elevation than Boquete, the climate here is much warmer, and on hot days, you'll find a fun scene, complete with music, barbecues, and food vendors. Panamanian families come from far and wide to splash and jump into the cool river water.

In this unique geological place, the river narrows into a gorge before opening up again in a shallow pool at the bottom. Daring adults and older kids jump off the edges into the slowly moving waters and then float down to the bottom, climb out, and do it all over again.

Youngsters and visitors who are looking for something a little milder can wade into the shallow waters where the gorge opens up. The walls vary in height, so it depends on how brave you are and how high you want to go.

Don't be deceived, the walls are actually quite a bit higher than you may think. The clear water below distorts your height reckoning. Fortunately, lifeguards are on duty and keep a close eye to make sure the jumpers resurface.

There is a small fee to enter the park, and it is a short walk from the parking areas down to the river.

Kitesurfing at Punta Chame

Highlights : Shallow water, massive beach, consistent wind perfect for kiteboarding

Although it's not on most travelers' itineraries, Punta Chame is home to one of the nicest beaches in Panama and it's also the best place for kiteboarding in the country. Set on a peninsula jutting out into the Pacific Ocean, this area is literally all about the beach.

The seemingly endless stretch of sand here is wide, and the water, warm and shallow. This gives kiters who are learning the distinct advantage of being able to stand up in the water to collect themselves as they work with their kite.

The winds are side onshore and quite consistent from December to April, which is Panama's dry season. Several kite schools offer lessons, including Machete Kite and Kitesurf Panama, located at opposite ends of the beach.

The beach at Punta Chame

Punta Chame is about 1.5 hours from Panama City , and about 20 minutes from the town of Chame, along the Pan-American Highway. You can find good accommodation in small luxury beachfront hotels, or, if you are looking for cheap accommodation, several hostels are available in town.

Punta Chame has an end-of-the-world type feel, and this is not the place to come for nightlife. All of the action is focused on the beach and kitesurfing and for most people, this is the entire reason for visiting.

Playa Coronado

Highlights : A long stretch of uncrowded sand, hot temperatures and sunny skies, golfing

If all you want to do in Panama is hit the beach and relax in comfort, Playa Coronado is a perfect spot. The beaches here stretch for miles and are an interesting mix of sparkling black and gold sand.

American chain restaurants and a large mall provide the touches of home that many of the retirees escaping cold northern winters appreciate. The water is not blue here, but more of a grey/green color; swimmers should be cautious of the large waves.

Playa Coronado also has some good beachfront hotels and some delightfully romantic B&Bs, although a majority of the accommodation is private homes or condos. Due to the geography of Panama, Playa Coronado is one of the hottest places in Panama during the dry season.

Iglesia de San Francisco de la Montana

Highlights : Waterfalls, hiking trails, historic churches, a cooler climate

A couple of hours east of Panama City, you'll find the turnoff for the towns of Santa Fe and San Francisco. This turn takes you away from the coast and into the mountains, ultimately ending at Santa Fe National Park . This is a relatively undiscovered area of Panama and perfect for people who want to get off the beaten path.

On the road to Santa Fe, you'll come across San Francisco , an unassuming town with a pleasant main square and one of the oldest churches in the country, Iglesia de San Francisco de la Montana, dating from 1727 . This photogenic church is open each day until 4pm, but closed over the lunch hour.

Just down the road about a mile is a secret swimming spot, Balneario El Salto . Here, the water cascades over rocks into a shallow natural pool, and swimmers come with their inflatable donuts and other toys to escape the heat on hot days.

Farther up the road, Santa Fe is a small friendly town in the mountains with some of the same features as Boquete, except in a much smaller and less developed way. Hiking, birding, coffee plantation tours, river tubing, and 4x4 driving in the national park are popular activities, which can be easily arranged.

You won't find the great selection of restaurants as you will in Boquete, but you are more likely to have personal experiences with local proprietors as you dine in their small establishments. Speaking Spanish is a real advantage here, as English is not widely spoken.

Santa Fe is located at an elevation of 1,500 feet, so it has a cooler climate than lower areas and can feel like a refreshing treat if you are coming from the coast. Be aware that on Tuesdays almost all the restaurants are closed, and from 3-6pm every day, a small no-see-um type insect comes out and feasts on exposed skin. The bites don't hurt but do produce plentiful red spots that fade by morning.

Roads in Panama are generally in good condition and, except for Panama City, where traffic can be horrendous, driving is easy. Due to the fact that there is only one major highway, the Pan-American, which runs the length of the country, destinations are generally easy to find. The main secondary highways branch off from this main artery. Potholes can be a problem on secondary roads and can come up surprisingly quickly.

Speeders beware! Police with radar guns are a very frequent occurrence along the Pan-American highway. Speed limit changes are frequent, and it's easy to find yourself going too fast.

If you are looking to do a driving tour around Panama, you can easily rent a car in Panama City. Prices are usually better at locations in the city, rather than the airport.

Drive time from Panama City to Boquete is about 6.5 hours, but depends on traffic, particularly in Panama City. From Boquete to Almirante, where you can catch a boat to Bocas del Toro, is approximately 3.5 hours.

The best time to visit Panama is in the winter through to early spring, namely December, January, February, March, and April. At this time of year, the country is at its driest, the sun beats down with a fierce intensity, and the beaches are very, very inviting.

It's hot at this time — not just a little bit hot, but a lot hot! Daytime temperatures along the Pacific coast are in the low 30s Celsius and can easily rise well above that figure, with a strong easterly wind. Although it's hot, it's also when the Panamanians enjoy most of their festivals and religious holidays.

The months of May, June, July, August, September, October, and November are considered the rainy season, and although the average temperature only dips slightly, you'll find intense humidity and it pours rain most afternoons. You'll certainly be warm, but you'll also get wet.

On the Caribbean coast it's always warm and humid, and always slightly wet no matter the month you choose to visit.
