Vaishno Devi Temple Jammu

Millions of pilgrims go each year to the Vaishno Devi Temple, which is tucked away in the Trikuta Hills, a trio of three-peaked mountains. Vaishno Devi Temple is one of the 108 Shakti Peeths and the holiest Hindu pilgrimage site, perched at an incredible elevation of 1,600 metres. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple is open to worshippers all year round.

To worship Goddess Vaishno Mata, an incarnation of Goddess Durga, visitors from all across the nation come to this location. Vaishno Mata is situated in a cave, and you must go 13 kilometres from Katra to get there. The Yatra is open all year; however, the ideal time to visit Vaishno Devi is determined by a number of factors that we will go over in depth.

In This Article:

Vaishno Devi During the Summer (April to June)

The greatest time to visit Vaishno Devi Temple is during the summer, which starts in April and lasts until June. The sun is out all day, so even hours of walking won’t cause you to sweat heavily. Wear light cotton clothing indoors as a result. The weather improves when the sun sets and occasionally even becomes a little bit colder. As a result, we advise you to pack some light wool clothing as well. The ideal time to travel to Vaishno Devi if you don’t want to be caught in the crowd of pilgrims is now.

The summertime temperature in Vaishno Devi:

  • Vaishno Devi remains to be moderately hot in April, with highs of 22°C and lows of 10°C.
  • Vaishno Devi experiences a hot May with a strong sun. Additionally, the temperature ranges from 27 to 14° c, so it is advised to pack lightweight cotton clothing.
  • You must stay hydrated when walking to the shrine at Vaishno Devi in June because the daytime high there is around 31°C.

  • With 21 days of rain, the temperature dips from 25°C to 16°C as September approaches. You need to bring rain gear and lightweight wool clothing for the evening.

Vaishno Devi During the Winter (October to March)

Visits to Vaishno Devi are most popular in October and November. The Navratri celebration has caused a large number of pilgrims to visit the temple and chant “Jai Mata Di” with devotion. The period following Diwali is ideal for peace lovers since the crowds lessen. Additionally, due to its high altitude, Vaishno Devi receives a lot of snowfall throughout the winter. Even though it is below zero outside, you can still witness visitors trudging through the snow to enter the temple to view Devi.

The wintertime temperature in Vaishno Devi:

  • In October, the rain nearly ceases, and the temperature drops from 23°C to 12°C. Warm clothing should be brought because the night is starting to grow cooler.
  • As November approaches, the days and nights become quite chilly. From 17°C to 8°C, Vaishno Devi’s temperature in November.

Jammu is well connected by flight from all the major cities, another way is to take a train to Jammu. There are many daily and weekly trains that operate from major cities to Jammu and there are few trains that have been extended till Katra. Given the connectivity and options you can easily plan a Vaishno devi trip from Mumbai.

Vaishno Devi trip plan with family

Vaishno Devi remains crowded throughout the year, but it is mostly visited by tourists during the months of March to July as the weather is pleasant and comforting for the devotees. The maximum temperature is 31 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature is 17 degrees Celsius making it appropriate for darshan and because of this many travellers prefer scheduling their Vaishno Devi trip plan with family during these months.

It usually rains between August and September, the weather conditions can get a little extreme this time, but despite that many devotees prefer travelling around this time. November to February are the winter months and many travellers do not prefer travelling during these months because weather conditions are harsh and Vaishno Devi trekking distance becomes difficult to cover around this time.

A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek

Photo of Bee The Musafir

Planning to visit Mata Vaishno Devi Temple in Katra?

Here are some useful tips and tricks:, reaching katra:.

Trains are available up to Katra Railway Station – officially named “Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station” (Station Code: SVDK). From Katra railway station you will have to take autorickshaw to Fountain Chowk (Phawara Chowk). Autorickshaws charge up to Rs. 300 (Rates mentioned are as they were on May 2017).

A majority of trains culminate at Jammu Railway Station. From Jammu you can hire a cab to Katra (Rs. 1500 one side) or get a bus/mini bus (Rs. 60 per person). They will drop you at Fountain Chowk.

HOTEL BOOKING:

It is advisable to pre-book a hotel room in Katra as per your budget. There are lots of hotels from budget to luxury category. Accommodations in temple trust’s dharmashalas are subject to availability. A lot of information is available on the shrine board’s website.

PARCHI (ENTRY PASS):

The first and most important thing you have to do is to get a “parchi” – an entry pass at the “parchi counter” at Fountain Chowk. This service is free and hassle-free. You have to stand in queue. In 5-10 mins as your turn comes you have to tell your name and hometown and get yourself photographed. They give you a printed entry pass with your name. You have to keep it with yourself to show it at different check points.

MODES OF REACHING THE SHRINE:

You can reach the temple on foot, pony ride, palanquin and by helicopter.

HELICOPTER BOOKING:

Pilgrims who wish to hire helicopter service should pre-book it online. Rates are decided by the trust. Booking can be done at Shrine's website .

ENTRY GATE:

After getting your “parchi”, you will have to walk down some 4-5 km to reach the first major check point named “Banganga gate”. You can either walk down to the gate, like many other pilgrims do, or you can take an autorickshaw till this point. There are separate queues for men and women.

Photo of A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek 3/9 by Bee The Musafir

PONIES AND PALKHIS:

Ponies and palkhis are available at Banganga gate. Do pay according to the standard rates decided by the shrine trust. Rates are written on walls. You may still bargain. People with spine/back problems and pregnant women should avoid pony ride.

Photo of A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek 4/9 by Bee The Musafir

The yatra route is open 24 x7. The trek is 15 km stretch with a good ascent. An athlete/sportsperson walking at normal speed can complete the trek in 3 hours. A regular walk/jog of 10 km for 3 months prior to yatra is advisable.

Must Read: hampta pass trek

There is only one way up and down. Road has proper lighting. It is paved and covered with roofs. Cleanliness level is satisfactory. There are CCTV cameras in-place. Loudspeakers are there all the way for public announcements. Public toilets are easily accessible. The shrine board and pilgrims should strive to maintain the cleanliness.

Photo of A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek 5/9 by Bee The Musafir

CROWD AND SHOPS:

Crowd depends upon season, weather and holidays. I was told that crowd is at peak during Navratri. The route is wide. Every 15-20 steps you will find shops. Shops are mostly of prasad, souvenirs, dry fruits, snacks and juices, and massage parlours. Shopkeepers are well behaved. Dustbins are around, use it and encourage others to use it.

IF SOMEBODY GETS LOST:

There is no chance of people getting lost. By any chance if somebody loses the track of their group/partner/family, cellphones will help. REMEMBER – PREPAID SIM CARDS DO NOT WORK IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR.

If anyone gets lost - don’t panic - just inform the security guards stationed at every 100-200 steps or report at the shrine offices. They will announce names and locate the lost member. Shopkeepers and pilgrims are also supportive. Children are at risk of getting lost. I SUGGEST PINNING SCHOOL I-CARD ON KID’S SHIRT WITH NAME, NUMBER AND ADDRESS OF PARENTS. Also, put your hotel visiting card in their pockets. All pilgrims have to pass through Banganga Gate – entry and exit, the chances of getting detached from your group is rare.

CLIMBING ON FOOT - UP:

The real test is for those who have decided to climb the mountain on foot. If you are a regular runner/jogger/athlete, it will not be tough for you.

My advice for foot pilgrims is to start the trek at sunset if you are climbing up in summer season . You will be at the temple by midnight.

For those who are not regular walkers need not to worry. It is a fun trekking. You can take as many halts. You will see most of the people walking up. This becomes a motivation in itself. You can reenergize yourself with snacks and juices. You can sit down and watch the beautiful sights. You see a mini-India here as pilgrims from different States visit this place. Even at snail pace, you should be near the sanctum sanctorum in less than 10 hours. Some families bring carpets and blankets and take naps or overnight sleep on way. PILGRIMS WHO CLIMB ON FOOT SHOULD WEAR SHOES AND TREK SUITS. NO JEANS or TIGHT CLOTHES.

DEPOSITING CELLPHONE, SHOES, BAGS:

There comes a point 3-km before the Mata Mandir where they have locker facility (free of cost). You have to deposit footwear, bags, cellphones or any metallic thing in the locker. You can carry only prasad and cash after this point. This is the last check point. There is a single queue for ladies and gents (sometimes ladies queue is different). This queue takes you through narrow marbled caves. Don’t try to jump the queue. It is a fast-moving queue, your turn will come soon. Both queues ultimately open at the same place.

BUYING PRASAD:

The place where you deposited your belongings has kiosks where the “official prasad" is sold. You will get a “prasad kit” in a bag with shrine’s logo.

DEVI DARSHAN:

The cave road divides into two somewhere in the middle. No need to worry if your group members take other road as both the roads will open at the same place. Follow the instructions written on walls. Then at a sharp turn you will see the " Vaishno Devi Mata ". Pujaris and security are lined up there to manage the crowd. You will get less than 2 mins to pray. You are 10 feet away Mata. Since you have deposited cellphone and cameras you can't take photos inside the temple.

Photo of A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek 8/9 by Bee The Musafir

AFTER DARSHAN:

After darshan you come out of caves and you start taking deep breaths. The ambience at the top is divine – a feeling that can’t be expressed in words! Now a common road will lead you to the place where you deposited your belongings. Collect your belongings and return them the keys.

TREK TO BHAIRAVNATH:

Bhairavnath shrine is a few more kilometers up from here. You can take a long break before you start for Bhairav Mandir. Quality food is available in number of outlets at this point. Outlets like Café Coffee Day have kiosks here. Best part is that they are all no-profit outlets. You get food at subsidized rates. After a 30 mins to an hour break, you should start for Bhairavnath Mandir.

CLIMBING DOWN ON FOOT:

Descent is tougher than ascent. You can develop thigh or knee pain. Massage centers are available. While coming down towards Banganga gate, you can buy souvenirs and collectibles. If you are doing Bhairavnath trek, there is ANOTHER ROAD towards Banganga. This road is less crowded. It meets the main route in the middle.

STEPS OR PAVED ROAD?

Steps will make your journey shorter, but it requires good amount of thigh strength. Paved roads have rush of pilgrims and ponies. You can alter between the paved roads and steps.

PHONE AND INTERNET:

Only POSTPAID or local SIM CARDS work here. Cellphone and internet are well within range.

WHAT TO WEAR?

Seasonal clothing, wear loose clothes maintaining the decency and sanctity of the place. Avoid tight and fashionable clothes. It will only make your journey tougher. Women should avoid wearing heavy makeup (trek can sweat you profusely on a warm day) and expensive jewelry. Though there are no reported cases of pick-pocketing or thefts, one should not take chances. Shoes with good grip are most important. Chappals and sandals will slow down your speed and may result in boils and blisters on feet.

WHAT ALL SHOULD BE IN MY BAG?

Bag should be a handbag/school-bag size. Avoid polythene bags. Water bottles, napkins, towel, extra tee-shirt, energy drink (glucose etc.; avoid Coke, Pepsi), light snacks, toilet kit (soap, handwash, deodorants), torch, money, charger, old newspapers for rough use, carpet or bed sheets. Your own visiting card or a chit with your name and number and the local hotel/accommodation card should be in your pocket and bag and with every member of your group. The less weight you carry - the better!

MEDICAL AID:

Carry your medicines and mini first aid box. There are dispensaries on the route. Chronic patients should consult their doctors before taking up this yatra.

HOW MUCH CASH SHOULD I CARRY?

For solo up to a group of three, minimum cash in hand should be Rs. 7,000/-. You will definitely not spend it all. By any chance if a member gets medical issues say, an ankle twist or sprain or develops cramps, you will have to hire a pony or palkhi. Don’t rely on ATMs. For a 15 km trek lasting 10 hours, one person will spend an average of Rs. 500-1000 on juices, tea, snacks, prasad, donations etc.)

Shopping should be done on way back. Souvenirs, devi mata photos, prasad, dry fruits, etc. are decked up at thousands of shops on both the sides along the route. Most shops are open 24x7.

PONIES, DONKEYS AND MONKEYS:

For foot pilgrims, marching ponies are a big nuisance. They hurriedly cross your road or come from the opposite directions. They stink badly. Donkeys, used to carry ration and supplies to the top, also irk a walker. They do have separate lane marked for them, but neither pilgrims nor the pony men follow it. Monkeys, not present throughout the way, have an eye on eatables. You are at risk of getting your eatable robbed by the monkeys. Keep distance from animals. Don't throw stones at them.

Photo of A quick guide to Mata Vaishno Devi trek 9/9 by Bee The Musafir

MAPS AND DIRECTIONS:

You don’t need maps or guides here. The flow of pilgrims will take you to the temple. You won’t get lost as there is only one route! If you want to check the distance and altitude, you can always use the fitness apps.

LOCALS’ BEHAVIOR?

Locals (service providers like drivers, shopkeepers, pony men, hotel staff etc.) are good people and cooperative. This may be due to their busy business owing to the large and continuous inflow of pilgrims. You don’t have risk of getting cheated as there are many options available and rates are decided by shrine trust or taxi/hotel unions.

BE A RESPONSIBLE PILGRIM:

My request to all pilgrims is to behave responsibly. Don't loiter the place. Use dustbins to dispose off trash. There are no beggars, but if you find any, don't encourage them by giving alms. Don't make other pilgrims uncomfortable. Don't touch or harass the animals. Help others as need be, especially, the elderly.

Enjoy the trek. Jai Mata Di.

Located at Trikuta Mountains in Jammu, Vaishno Devi he most popular and widely visited Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu Goddess. In 2017 itself, more than 81 lakh people have visited Vaishno Devi temple. These numbers do not lie and it has given a boost to Kashmir tourism . Being located in one of the most breath-taking locations, Vaishno Devi is among one of the best places to visit in Kashmir .

Be it your first pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi or the curiosity to see this famous place there are a few things you should keep in mind before you go there.

1. Best time to visit: Irrespective of the time, Vaishno Devi always has its share of visitors. The best time to visit is during summer when the weather is just perfect on the mountains. If you are visiting during the monsoons or winter, you need to keep in mind that weather conditions are prone to change. Special days like New Year’s eve, Navratras and summer vacation or festivals are very crowded. The waiting time is too long so it is best avoided to plan during this time.

2. Travel Smart: Depending on your time of visit, make sure you carry the right attire. If you are travelling during winters, carry gloves, scarves, woollens to keep you warm. Also, wear comfortable shoes even if you do not plan to trek.

3. Register: You will need to register yourself for the Yatra. This can be obtained from Yatra Registration Counter at Katra and you do not need to pay for the same. Once you have a registration slip, you will have to cross the first check post at Banganga within 6 hrs of issuance of the Yatra Slip.

4. Walk the roads: You have the option taking the 12 km trek from Katra. The temple lies at the altitude of 52000 feet. So you should be prepared for a long walk. The trek itself is smooth as the way is well paved. If you do not wish to walk on the slope, you have the option of climbing steep stairs as well. Start your trek at nightfall, as this will give you an amazing opportunity to catch the sight of the rising sun from the mountain beds, clasping the entire valley in its sunshine.

5. Pony or Doli Rides: If you are not keen on walking or are travelling with senior citizens, you have the option of taking a pony ride as well. They have a fixed rate and you can get all relevant information about the prices and availability on various signboards or at the Assistance Centres at Katra, Banganga and other places. Battery operated autos for senior citizens are available during the day.

6. Fly in the sky: You also have the option of choosing a helicopter service, which is available from Katra to Sanjhichatt helipad. The service needs to be pre-booked as there is high demand for the rides.

7.  Pray at ArdhKuwari Temple: In the middle of the journey to Holy Shrine, the ArdhKuwari Temple cave is a must visit. The pilgrimage to Vaishnodevi is considered incomplete till this temple is visited.

8. Stop at Sanjichhat: Sanjichhat is a beautiful spot located at a distance of 3.25 km from Ardhkunwari. The panoramic view of the valley and snow covered Himalayan peaks can be enjoyed from here.

9. Eateries: There are plenty of eateries and refreshment centres throughout the route maintained by the Shrine Board. The Bhojanalayas offer delicious rajma rice, purichole, dosa, kadipakoda and dahivada. Keep yourself nourished and hydrated on the journey

10. Bhawan: The main complex, known as the Bhawan, has free and rented accommodation facilities, vegetarian restaurants, a medical unit, blanket stores, cloakrooms, and shops selling religious offerings and souvenirs.

When you reach the cave, you can spot three pindis which symbolise Goddesses Kali, Lakshmi and Saraswati. Goddess Vaishnodevi symbolizes their union, having the power of all three. • Beyond just the weather, consider the festivals and events. Navratri, especially during Chaitra (March-April) and Sharad (September-October), is considered an auspicious time to visit.

Booking Accommodation in Advance

  • While there are plenty of accommodation options, during peak seasons, it’s best to book well in advance to secure your stay.

Registering for the Yatra

  • Registering for the Yatra online not only streamlines your journey but also helps authorities in ensuring the safety of pilgrims.

Health Checkup

  • Along with assessing your fitness level, consult with a doctor to get advice on high-altitude trekking and any necessary vaccinations.

Reaching Katra – The Starting Point

  • Jammu Airport (IXJ) is well-connected to major Indian cities. Upon arrival, hire a pre-paid taxi or board a shuttle to Katra.
  • The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station (SVDK) has regular trains from cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai. Make train reservations well in advance during peak seasons.
  • If you prefer road travel, Katra is accessible by bus from various cities in North India, including Jammu, Delhi, and Chandigarh.

Trekking to Vaishno Devi

Starting the Trek

  • The 13-kilometer trek from Katra to Vaishno Devi Bhawan is both challenging and spiritually enriching. You can choose your mode of transportation based on your fitness and preferences.

Walking Tips

  • In addition to comfortable trekking shoes, carry a walking stick for support. Layer your clothing as temperatures can change rapidly. Don’t forget rain gear during monsoon season.

Pony and Palanquin Services

  • If you choose to use pony or palanquin services, make sure they are registered with the Shrine Board to ensure safety and fair pricing.

Halt Points Along the Way

  • There are several halting points with clean restrooms, food stalls, and medical facilities. Take advantage of these to rest, hydrate, and recharge.

Reaching the Vaishno Devi Bhawan

Security Check

  • Be prepared for a thorough security check at the Bhawan. Leave behind items such as cameras, leather goods, and tobacco products, as they are prohibited.

The Holy Cave

  • The cave temple is small, and it can get crowded during peak times. Maintain patience and follow the queues for darshan. Mobile phones are allowed but should be on silent mode out of respect.

Safety and Health Tips

Stay Hydrated

  • Dehydration is a common issue during the trek. Carry enough water and energy drinks. There are water points along the route for refilling.
  • Consume easily digestible foods like fruits, nuts, and local snacks. Avoid heavy meals, as they can make the trek more challenging.
  • If you have any medical conditions, carry necessary medications and inform your travel companions about your condition. Be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness.

Emergency Numbers

  • Store emergency numbers and contacts of local authorities in your phone. The Shrine Board has a dedicated helpline for pilgrims.

Accommodation and Rest

Bhawan Accommodation

  • If you plan to stay at the Bhawan, book rooms well in advance as they tend to get booked quickly, especially during festival seasons.

Accommodation in Katra

  • Katra offers a range of accommodation options to suit various budgets. Choose one that fits your preferences and book in advance for peace of mind.

  • The entire Vaishno Devi Yatra region is strictly vegetarian. Enjoy local dishes like rajma-chawal (kidney beans with rice) and puri-subzi (fried bread with vegetable curry).

mata Vaishno devi

One has to reach Katra to visit the holy shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi which is located 50 km from Jammu. Katra serves as the base camp for Yatra and is well-connected with the rest of the country. Here is the list of things that one must keep in mind while planning a Maa Vaishno Devi Yatra Helicopter:

  • The helicopter service is available from Katra to Sanjichhat from where the shrine is just 2.5 km.  To and fro helicopter service is also available which can be booked online from the official website. Tickets can be booked in advance.
  • Upon reaching Bhawan, take a holy bath at the bathing ghat before heading towards the Bhawan for Darshan.
  • It is advisable to carry heavy woolen clothes during the winter season and light woolens in summers. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for the Yatra.
  • Information centers, refreshment kiosks, and public utilities are available throughout the route. Medical stores, banks, and accommodations are also available at the Bhawan for the convenience of travelers.
  • Carry required documents, tickets, and sufficient cash during the Yatra.

On A Spiritual Sojourn: A Handy Guide For Planning The Vaishno Devi Yatra

The sacred shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi in Jammu and Kashmir has always been special for Indians. We have fond memories from our childhood family trips to Katra. There are some of us who are yet to make it and some who are regulars. If you too are planning a spiritual journey to the reverred site, this quick guide to the Vaishno Devi Yatra or pilgrimage may come in handy. By Karan Kaushik

Here’s how to plan your next Vaishno Devi Yatra

About the vaishno devi yatra.

Nestled amidst the majestic Trikuta hills, the sacred shrine of Goddess Vaishno Devi is perched at an altitude of 5,200 feet. It is considered to be one of India’s holiest pilgrimages. The main temple is housed inside an ancient cave , which is flocked by devotees throughout the year. There’s no idol of the goddess in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

She is worshipped in the form of natural rocks or pindies . The journey to the Vaishno Devi shrine or durbar begins from Katra. One has to cover the nearly 13km pilgrimage on foot. You may also hire ponies and porters. A helicopter service is also operational on a daily basis from both Jammu and Katra.

Know the Vaishno Devi Yatra route

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by 🌹Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji 🌹 (@shri.maa.vaishno.devi)

The route of the Vaishno Devi Yatra is as follows: Darshani Darwaza-Banganga-Charan Paduka-Ardhkuwari-Sanjichhat.

Darshani Darwaza to Banganga

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by @shri.mata.vaishno.devi_

This is the first stretch of the pilgrimage. You may cover it on foot or hire a pony or a palanquin. These can be hired from Banganga. Rates are fixed by the government.

Banganga to Charan Paduka

This is the second leg of the pilgrimage. The prime highlight of this part is Charan Paduka, where you can see an impression of the goddess’ feet on a rock. There’s a small temple nearby.

Charan Paduka to Ardhkuwari

Once you cover the first six kilometres, stop at Ardhkuwari. Here, you will find small lodges, dharamshalas, a dispensary, a medical shop, ATM machines, and roadside eateries. This is perhaps the busiest point in the whole pilgrimage. Visit the Adhkuwari temple and explore the Garbh Joon Cave before moving ahead.

Adhkuwari to Sanjichhat

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by beautyofkishtwar (@mykishtwarbeauty)

This is the most challenging part of the Vaishno Devi Yatra as the ascent increases. The Hathi Matha ascent is a bit tough and leads you to Sanjichhat. Once you reach Sanjichhat, you will be greeted by incredible views of the Pir Panchal range and the Chenab River . Sanjichhat also has two helipads.

Things to remember

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Devotional Point (@devotionalpoint)

Here are a few points you must remember before planning the Vaishno Devi Yatra.

  • You need to get a Yatra slip from the Yatra Registration Counter before starting the pilgrimage. This slip can be obtained free of cost near the Katra bus stand. You won’t be allowed to proceed beyond the check post in Banganga without this slip.
  • If you hire a porter, pony, or palanquin, do confirm the rate beforehand and check if they have a valid registration card.
  • Video cameras and gadgets are not allowed on the route. You can keep them safely in Katra.
  • It’s best to travel light. Leave all your luggage in Katra. Eatables, blankets and other essentials are available on the route.
  • When you arrive at Bhawan, you’ll have to get a group number on your yatra slip. Your turn for the main darshan will only come according to this group number.

Vaishno Devi Temple Jammu: Timings, History and Entry Fee, Best Time to Visit

Located in the lap of the splendid Trikuta Mountains in Jammu and Kashmir is one of India’s most visited Hindu pilgrimage destinations, Mata Vaishno Devi Cave Temple. The famed religious site attracts devotees in huge numbers from all over the world, where they come seeking the blessings of Goddess Vaishno Devi as she is said to fulfil all their wishes. Devotees make traditional offerings, including chunri, sarees, dry fruits, gold ornaments, flowers and more. Vaishno Devi Temple is one of the few places on this Earth that can’t be travelled or explored but needs to be lived. Kashmir’s expansive beauty, the city’s grand allure and the temple’s religious vibes, all make it worth the difficult journey here.

About Vaishno Devi Temple

Considered one of the most important and sacred temples in the whole of India, Vaishno Devi temple is also an important Shaktipeeth with strong beliefs and connection to the people. In fact, Mata Vaishno Devi darshan is such a big affair among the people of India that month-long delays and overpopulated hotels are a common sight.

It takes a 13 Km trek from Katra to reach the Bhawan, which diverges into two different pathways. The first path goes via the Adhkuwari Temple, which denotes that the pilgrims are halfway through the Bhawan. Its old construction is revealed through the step and narrow passageways. The newer second route goes via Himkoti and is wide enough with an ascendable gradient.

Vaishno Devi Temple History

Mata Vaishno Devi temple has rich history and heritage attached to it. The cave’s importance is depicted in folktales which tell that here was Goddess Sati’s skull had fallen and that the goddess resides here in the form of a five and a half feet tall rock which has three heads or the Pindies.

It has not been possible to pinpoint the exact date or the year of the beginning of the worship of the Goddess in these caves, but it is believed to have connections with Mahabharata which hint towards the holy goddess of Jamboo Mountains, present-day Jammu. The Pandavas are believed to be the original worshipers of the Goddess in the holy cave.

The holy cave at Vaishno Devi temple is said to have been first discovered by Pandit Sridhar, a Hindu priest, who witnessed the Goddess in his dreams and was instructed to find the temple. When the priest found the holy cave, Mata Vaishno Devi appeared to him and blessed him with four sons. He was given the boon of being the custodian of the cave, a commitment locals believe his descendants follow to this day.

Also located near the Vaishno Devi temple is the Bhairon Nath temple. The Bhairon Nath Temple holds great importance and is situated just 2 Km away from the main Bhawan where the Vaishno Devi cave is located. Dedicated to Bhairon Nath, legends have it that he fell off at the temple’s spot when the Goddess beheaded him.

Reaching Vaishno Devi Temple Bhawan

The 13 Km long trek to the Vaishno Devi temple cave starts at the Banganga Check post in Katra. The journey to the Bhawan at the top is tiring no doubt but offers stunning views of the valleys and foggy mountains. Viewpoints with places to sit, rest, toilets and eat can be founded after every few meters, or around each of the corners, to ensure your journey is as comfortable as possible. While most devotees embark on the journey on foot, you can also complete it via horses, palki or in a helicopter.

Vaishno Devi helicopter bookings should be made in advance to avoid unnecessary delays and price hikes, but you can also purchase Vaishno Devi helicopter package at Jagjivan Ghat near the Katra Bus Stand. Helicopter services, however, have limitations such as being prone to cancellation due to climatic changes and low availability.

Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board

The temple and all its related activities are presently overseen by the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, which was formed back in 1986. Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board provides its services to the devotees on the basis of no profit-making.

The board overlooks the maintenance of several guest houses, dhams located in Jammu, Katra, Adkuwari, Sanjichhat and Bhawan apart from the bhojanalaya services both in the Main Bhawan and the Manokamana Bhawan Complex. The temple administration also provides cheap and affordable eating options all along the long trek both up and down the cave, including hygienic vegetarian meals, water, hot and cold beverages and more at fixed flat rates.

Vaishno Devi Online Booking

The Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has started the process of Online Yatra Registration to make the process easy and manageable for devotees.

Through online booking, devotees will be able to obtain all bookings including Yatra Registration slip, Room Bookings as well as Pooja bookings well in advance, online.

To make Vaishno Devi darshan booking online, obtain a Yatra Slip or use any other Online Service being provided on the official website of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, users will first need to register on the website. It is to be noted that this Yatra Slip is free of cost and will need to be presented at Banganga Yatra check post on your arrival to undertake the Yatra to the Holy Cave Shrine, else you will not be permitted. The Yatra Parchi is valid for a full day to cross Banganga check post.

Vaishno Devi Temple Timing

The Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir is open to the devotees throughout the year for pilgrimage. The temple premises can be entered from 5 AM till 12 PM after which the temple is shut down, and again opened from 4 PM till 9 PM. The traditional Aarti, which is the main reason for huge queues in the Vaishno Devi darshan, takes place both in the mornings and evenings, right before sunrise and sunset.

Vaishno Devi Live Darshan

The aarti at Vaishno Devi is an experience out of this world that should be experienced in person. But if for any reason you are unable to visit the holy Mata Vaishno Devi Temple in Katra, you can enjoy the divine experience live at your home. Vaishno Devi live darshan broadcasts the daily aarti and pooja on TV for millions of people to enjoy from the comfort of your home.

The Aatma Pooja, meant for self-cleansing, is conducted by the temple’s priests and marks the start of the Pooja. The Goddess is then bathed with water, ghee, milk, honey and sugar, after which the Goddess dresses up in a saree, chola and chuni amidst the holy echoes of chants and shlokas. Aarti is conducted once inside the main shrine or the sanctum, and then outside the cave where the devotees waiting in long queues get the first glimpse of divine procedures.

Best Time to Visit Vaishno Devi Temple

Although the Vaishno Devi, Jammu is open to pilgrims throughout the year, the best time to visit is during the months of March to June, and then from October to November.

These months encounter several festivals which ensure a better traditional experience. However, many pilgrims are seen visiting the holy temple during these months and hence it is recommended to make your bookings in advance to avoid cancellations.

The months from June to October are not considered ideal as these are prone to heavy rainfall which brings with it the risks of frequent landslides, and road blockages, making the conditions far from ideal. Similarly, the months from December to March encounter harsh winter conditions with sub-zero temperature levels and it’s best to avoid visiting Vaishno Devi temple during these months.

Dedicated to Goddess Vaishno Devi, a form of Goddess Durga or Shakti, this cave temple holds immense importance in Hindu mythology and celebrates major Hindu festivals, especially Navratri with high glory. When visiting this extraordinary state, it is highly recommended that a holy trip to the Vaishno Devi temple is included in your Jammu and Kashmir tour packages for a divine experience.

History of Vaishno Devi:

Vaishno Devi has history dated to Treta Yuga when the earth was overburdened by the evil rule of the demons and in order to protect the world from this evil Goddess Vaishnavi was created which was a combination of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. The combination of the energy of all these three Goddesses helped earth be free from the wrath of the evils. Goddess Vaishnavi lived and helped all those in need.

How to reach Vaishno Devi Temple:

Vaishno Devi Temple can be reached from Katra either by foot, by battery auto or by helicopter services by professional service providers. Katra is well connected from all the major cities of the country by train. There are both day and night trains available from New Delhi to Jammu Tawi or Katra. We took the newly launched Vande Bharat Express from New Delhi to Katra. The food served on the train was by far the best.

Vaishno Devi by Foot:

The base camp for Vaishno Devi is located in Katra at a distance of approximately 12kms from the temple. The total time taken to cover this distance is 5 to 6 hours on an average with multiple breaks. The route taken for the same is Katra-Ban Ganga-Charan Paduka-Ardhkuwari-Bhawan( temple). Ardhkuwari is the mid point of the journey. There are multiple pit stops on the way with neat washroom facilities.

Vaishno Devi by Helicopter:

Reaching Vaishno Devi temple by helicopter is one of the most easiest and convenient options. There are two companies who operate from the base camp in Karta to Sanjhi Chhat, the helipad near bhawan. The distance from Sanjhi Chhat to Bhawan is less than 3kms. There are options for horses and  palki  near the helipad to take you to the bhawan. This is very helpful for the elderlies.

Here are a few things you need to know about  Helicopter Ride to Vaishno Devi Temple:

  • Cost of Helicopter Ride:  1045INR (One Way) and 2090INR(Return).
  • Flight Time:  3-4 minutes.
  • Helicopter Operators: Global Vectra and Himalayan Heli.
  • Booking website: https://www.maavaishnodevi.org/helecopter_detail.aspx

Where to stay in Katra:

Katra has a lot of options when it comes to stay. From budget options which provide just basic accommodation facilities to comfortable options like Lemon Tree hotel which are affordable and provide excellent services we have it all. We chose to stay with the Lemon Tree hotel Katra and were completely happy and satisfied with the services.

Here are our reasons for a completely satisfying stay with Lemon Tree hotel in Katra:

Lemon Tree Hotel Katra is located right next to the Katra junction railway station. This makes it a perfect choice to pick this hotel as when you are traveling by train all it takes is just 2 minutes to reach the hotel. The main market of Katra is also just 10 mins away when driving which makes it all the more useful as you are staying away from the crowd.

Lemon Tree Hotel serves only vegetarian food. Having said that, we would not be doubtful in saying that we had one of the best vegetarian food here at Lemon Tree. The Citrus cafe at the Lemon Tree Hotel Katra has a good spread for buffet food along with a wide variety of options for ala-carte. The food served during the in-room dining is also tasteful and hot when served.

Tattva, the in-house spa:

A nice massage is all you need post visiting the Vaishno Devi Temple. Tattva, the in-house spa at the Lemon Tree hotel is a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. We opted to go for a foot massage and a full body massage and both the experiences were extremely satisfactory.

Vaishno Devi Travel Blog

Rooms, Staff and Service:

The rooms at the Lemon Tree hotel are decent in size. The layout of the rooms are simple with enough space to move around. The amenities within the room ensure that you have a comfortable stay.

Timings for Vaishno Devi Temple:

The temple is open 24×7 for the visitors. However, there is an arti which happens twice in a day once before the sunrise and once after the sunset. The duration of the arti is 1.5 hours.

Facilities near the Vaishno Devi Temple:

The way to Bhawan is well maintained and has various options for washrooms and chairs to sit if you feel tired. The food options available on the way are good to too. One shouldn’t miss the Kadhi Chawal on the way.

Our experiences from the trip:

This was one of the most smoothest and easiest trip to the Vaishno Devi Temple. All thanks to the impeccable arrangements by the Shrine Board and the Helicopter services, we could easily visit the temple, get a very good darshan and reach back in time.

The services offered by the entire team of Lemon Tree hotel also made our experience worth remembering for long.

Winter: Vaishno Devi snowfall time

Vaishno Devi snowfall time

From December to February, Vaishno Devi holds winter tranquillity and it gives a different perception of pilgrimage. With these temperatures during this period ranging from 0° Celsius to 15°C, it creates a chill environment that imposes its challenges on the journey. Yet, the holy cave is open throughout these extremely cold temperatures for those seeking something special in their winter pilgrimage. Winter changes the landscape into a magnificent panorama of icicles-frosted mountains and paths.

Vaishno Devi snowfall time becomes more challenging because of snowy paths. 10 Those willing to justify weather elements are rewarded with a tranquil and less crowded spiritual experience amid the ethereal beauty of Vaishno Devi in winter. The pilgrimage happens during this time and becomes a document of devotion, finding God in the still-white world.

Vaishno Devi in Autumn:

As the summer wanes Vaishno Devi serenely changes into an enthralling autumn hue from September to November. Round this period, the weather changes delightfully to offer such a cool and fresh environment for pilgrims. The temperatures of autumn are very comfortable for those undertaking the pilgrimage journey.

Autumn stands out as a post-monsoon reviving phase, where the trekking trail is beautified with greenery. The surroundings burst with bright colors enriching the landscape and offering pilgrims a visual banquet on their spiritual journey. With the cool temperatures, autumn is a perfect time for making a pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi as it becomes peaceful and anmeditation-likeke.

Vaishno Devi in Monsoon:

The monsoon season, which covers the region of Vaishno Devi in July and August has a very different touch to it. The landscape drenching itself in lush greenery, this pilgrimage turns out to be a trial of determination and caution at the same time. In these months, heavy rainfall makes the paths slippery and tortuous for devotees as they move towards their holy cave. The threat of landslides makes the journey more complicated and requires careful navigation, as well as strict adherence to safety rules.

Despite all these, the monsoon time adds to the beauty of Vaishno Devi. The rainfall produces a distinctive and rich ambiance, as it imbues the environs with an invigorating energy. As they tread on with caution, Pilgrimcanto witnesses the divine abode amidst a verdant vista brought about by rains. Monsoon pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi becomes a holistic experience, combining spirituality and natural beauty in an enchanting way.

Vaishno Devi attracts its followers year-round with every season presenting something special. The best time to go to Vaishno Devi is during March to October when the weather is pleasant, and the pilgrimage is more accessible due to milder temperatures.

Regardless of whether you enjoy the lushness of monsoon, protected from direct sunlight and heat by lofty mountains during summer, or crisp air hinting at shorter days with impending winter; Vaishno Devi warms up to its pilgrims wholeheartedly providing for a spiritually elevating experience.

Vaishno Devi Weather: Best Time to visit

Last Updated on January 2, 2022 by asoulwindow

Table of Contents

Weather in Vaishno Devi

The famous Vaishno Devi Mandir is located in Jammu in North India , which means weather in Vaishno Deviis pleasant most of the parts of the year.I have been to Vaishno Devi temple twice; once in August and second time in November.

Mata Vaishno Devi weather was very pleasant when I visited the Hindu shrine in the last week of November and August. So, is it a good time to visit Vaishno Devi? Let’s find out!

This handy travel guide will help you plan your trip to Vaishno Devi by helping you choose the best time to visit Vaishno Devi, based on my personal experience. Wondering what is the best time to visit Mata Vaishno Devi Temple? And if there is snow in Katra and Vaishno Devi? Read on!

Altitude of Mata Vaishno Devi

Katra town has an average elevation of only 875 metres or 2,474 feet above sea level where as the Bhawan of Mata Vaishno Devi is located at an altitude of 5200 feet or 1,584 meters above sea level. This is why, the weather in Vaishno Devi Bhawan is different from weather in Katra. While the temperature of Vaishno Devi ji is lower in a said period, the temperature of Katra will be warmer during the same time.

Therefore, it will be misleading to accept the temperature at Vaishno Devi ji same as temperature of Katra. The Katra weather will always be somewhat warmer than the Mata Vaishno Devi temperature.

For example, even at the peak of summer, the Bhawan area of Mata Vaishno Devi has pleasant weather and low temperature when compared to the weather of Katra.

Weather of Vaishno Devi in Spring

The Spring months of March and April are for those who want a respite from trekking in snow, rain, harsh sun or extreme cold. The temperature of Vaishno Devi in Spring is moderate and pleasant. Enjoy the moderate climate as you hike up in what is one of the best times to visit Vaishno Devi.

Vaishno Devi weather in Summer

The months of March, April, May and June are summers in Vaishno Devi. It is actually the low season due to the extreme heat, especially in May and June. This is when the climate in Vaishno Devi is the hottest.

The days can be very hot akin to a furnace but the evenings are cooler. Since the temperature dips a little during the night, it is advised to carry light woollens with you in summer as well. If you want to avoid the rush in crowd, then you can visit Vaishno Devi in summers to.

Soul Window Tips

Pls note that since Vaishno Devi Bhawan is located higher than its base Katra, it is colder up there. So do carry woollens caps, gloves, windcheaters etc when you go there.

Weather in Vaishno Devi in Monsoon

Mid-June, July, August and September are the wettest months of Vaishno Devi. The best thing about traveling to Vaishno Devi is that you get to see voluptuous waterfalls falling from the verdant mountains . As you hike up, the views of lush green forests sooth the eyes. Depending upon your luck, you might experience medium to high rainfall in Vaishno Devi.

Natural beauty apart, the risk factor of traveling here in rains includes frequent mudslides which happen in monsoon . Therefore, some people avoid visiting here during rainy months . This is also why it is off season or low season in Vaishno Devi. You can get very good deals as most hotels are available at low costs during monsoon.

It is thus a great time for budget travellers as it is raining offers and discounts during monsoon months. Needless to say, you must carry windcheaters, umbrellas and raincoats when visiting Vaishno Devi in July, August and September.

However, if you are scared of the hassle of walking up, exposed to rains then you need not worry. The thoughtful authorities at Vaishno Devi have laid down tin roofs throughout the walking route of the temple. This means that you will always be protected from rain, snow and sun without missing out on the breath-taking panoramic views of the valley below.

Weather in Vaishno Devi in Winter

Contrary to popular belief, many people actually love to visit Vaishno Devi in winters months of December and January despite the harsh climate conditions. Some travel here in winter for the hope of snow while others for cooler climate, which makes the trekking easy. I have done high altitude treks such as Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal , Poonhill Trek in Nepal , Roopkund Trek in Nepal and Dodital Darwa Pass trek in Uttarakhand .

During all of these treks I had experienced snow in one form or the other. Despite the sub-zero level temperature, it was very comfortable to trek. So, if I could do those, the trek to Vaishno Devi was much easier.

Unlike the high altitude treks I mentioned, you will get all modern amenities, restaurants and clean washroom, throughout your hike to Vaishno Devi. So do not think too much about visiting Vaishno Devi in winter.

Despite the low temperature and harsh weather in Vaishno Devi in winter, especially in December and January, it is quite popular time to visit. In case you are scared of walking in snow, rest assured, a tin roof will be your permanent companion, protecting you from the elements.

Weather of Vaishno Devi in Autumn

Indian autumn fall in October and November. It is actually a great time to plan a trip to Vaishno Devi. Thanks to the many festivals that falls in October and November, autumn is also the peak season of Vaishno Devi.

It is only in Mata Vaishno Devi that you will see thousands and lakhs of people chanting ‘Jai Mata Di’ with an infectious positive energy. The festive fervour displayed by common people during Navratri is an experience in itself. Nowhere else will you see something like this ever! Vaishno Devi weather also is good during this time.

Diwali or Deepawali , the biggest festival of India , also often falls either in October or November. However, since most people celebrate Diwali at home, therefore expect less crowd in Vaishno Devi during and after Deepawali. This is the most popular and best season to visit Vaishno Devi.

What is the best time to visit Mata Vaishno Devi Temple?

Such is the faith of Hindus that they actually do not care about the weather in Vaishno Devi while planning this famous Hindu pilgrimage of high religious significance.

Also, since the entire stretch is shaded with tin roofs, you need not worry about the sun or rain or snow making your yatra difficult. The proactive authorities at Vaishno Devi have left no stones unturned to make your journey as hassle free as possible.

Which month is good for Vaishno Devi?

In my experience, for most Hindu devotees the best time to visit Vaishno Devi is every time. Be it any month, you will always hear the pilgrims enthusiastically chanting ‘Jai Mata Di’ as they walk up to Bhawan. However, if you still want to choose the months with best weather in Vaishno Devi, you must read this Vaishno Devi travel guide . You can also read my other comprehensive blogs on Mata Vaishno Devi on A Soul Window – The No. 1 travel blog of India. This travel blog has also been awarded as the best Indian travel blog numerous times.

Here is a guide to the worst and best weather in Katra Vaishno Devi Mata. `

January in Vaishno Devi Mata

Apart from December, January is another extreme winter month in Jammu. The temperature of Vaishno Devi reaches its lowest in January. But Jammu being a great winter destination in its own league, is a pleasure to visit in January.

You can avoid visiting Vaishno Devi on 26 th January as it is Republic Day of India . Hindus from all corners of India throng Vaishno Devi on Republic Day. Expect long lines, huge crowds and scarcity of good hotels.

The climate in Vaishno Devi can be very cold and misty in January. Snowfall can also happen during the visit. Isn’t it a great idea to visit Vaishno Devi in extreme winter and enjoy the combination of spirituality and snowfall? However, snowfall is not guaranteed. It may happen or may not. Many people visit Vaishno Dham again and again to try their luck at seeing snowfall here.

Best time for Vaishno Devi darshan is in early morning. However, this can be a bit difficult for those who are sensitive to cold or are just plain lazy.

February in Mata Vaishno Devi

February is quite moderate in Jammu with cool night and comfortable days. You can consider a trip in February as well.  During January and February, devotees can access the original ancient path to get darshan of the Pindis or Maa, given that number of Hindu devotees hover around 10,000 per day. This path was closed and a new path was opened because of heavy crowds 365 days a year.

It is a good time to visit Vaishno Devi.

March in Mata Vaishno Devi

The pleasant spring season of March makes it one of the best months to visit Vaishno Devi. The cool breeze, perfect temperature and a certain je ne sais quoi positivity in the air makes it worth traveling to Maa Vaishno Devi in March. It is also the right time to visit Vaishno Devi.

You may expect large crowds at Vaishno Devi during Holi, which is the festival of colors . Holi is one of the biggest Hindu festivals of India .

April in Vaishno Devi Mata

April too is counted as spring in Jammu. Do visit for nice weather in Mata Vaishno Devi. It can get hot and tiring in noon though. Vaishno Devi weather fluctuates a lot in April month.

May in Mata Vaishno Devi

May is when summer starts to knock on the door. This is when temperature at Vaishno Devi begins to see an upward climb. I would personally avoid. You can still book an easy helicopter ride though, if you have made up your mind to visit Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji in this month.

June in Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine

June is the hottest month of not just Jammu but most of India. I personally avoid traveling to plains in these months. Mata Vaishno Devi temperature is very high in June.

I once travelled across Bihar, visiting ancient historical places such as Nalanda University, Rajgir, Patna and Bodhgaya.

It was definitely not the best time to travel, except the delicious mangoes (a summer special in India) which I picked from the road side carts.

July in Mata Vaishno Devi ji

Expect lots of rains. Such is the scheme of nature that after suffering extreme heat of June, humans are gifted with extreme incessant rains. Vaishno Devi is no exception! Expect low costs, mudslides, less crowds but breath-taking views of azure skies and verdant mountains, waterfalls and what not! This is why Vaishno Devi weather in July is not suitable for travel.

August in Mata Vaishno Devi Mandir

I visited Vaishno Devi during the month of August and it was quite pleasant. I made a stop at Mata Vaishno Devi before proceeding to Pashupati Nath Temple in Nepal and the epic Hindu pilgrimage known as Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in Tibet . It was a journey of a lifetime .

I wore just a plain T Shirt and Jeans in August. The weather in Vaishno Devi in August was neither too hot nor too cold. Nor was it raining in Vaishno Devi during my visit here in August. I personally found August to be one of the best times to visit Vaishno Devi Temple.

September in Mata Vaishno Devi temple

The weather of Vaishno Devi is tolerable in the month of September. Expect sunny days and cool mornings and evenings. Weather in Vaishno Devi Bhawan in September month is great, in fact!

October in Katra, Mata Vaishno Devi

October is when summer in Mata Vaishno Devi is finally fading away and the weather progress towards cooler climes of winter. Temperature in Vaishno Devi Mata is quite pleasant in October; therefore, you can consider a trip to Vaishno Devi Dham in October. This is also considered best time to go Vaishno Devi by many.

November in Mata Vaishno Devi, Jammu

My second visit to Vaishno Devi was in the month of November. November is just the onset of winters in Vaishno Devi and elsewhere in North India . To my surprise, weather in Vaishno Devi was not very cold in November. There was a certain pleasant nip in the air, which made our small evening walks in the markets of Katra pleasurable.

I would definitely recommend November as the best time to pay a visit to Vaishno Devi Temple. Even the early morning chadai (climb), we did during November was pleasant. It did get sunny while returning but it was still pleasurable.

And you can anyways book shared vehicles for some distance during the climb up and down the Vaishno Devi Temple. Mata Vaishno Devi temperature during November was very tolerable.

November is also one of my favourite months to visit destinations in North India . It is in fact one of the best months to visit Vaishno Devi.

December in Mata Vaishno Devi

December is extreme winter in VAishno Devi but still pleasurable. Once your pace of walking sets, you do not feel frozen as the body warms up to the climb. December is also when you can expect to eat many winter delicacies such as Gajar ka halwa , Makke Ki Roti and Sarso Ka Saag in Katra. Even the omnipresent Gulab Jamun tastes better in winters.

Expect foggy Mata Vaishno Devi weather during early morning. Snowfall can also happen in Vaishno Devi area in December. The board even provides blankets for a nominal security deposit which is refundable. These are available at the resting halls during winters in Katra.

Did you know there are free resting places near Bhawan? Thanks to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrin Board, you can now rest at the waiting halls such as Manokamana Bhawan, Saraswati Bhawan etc while awaiting your turn at darshan. You do not need to make any bookings to secure a spot here. It is subject to availability.

Visiting Mata Vaishno Devi during festivals?

Expect lots of crowds in Vaishno Devi on weekends, long weekends, public holidays such as Christian New Year, Christmas , Dussehra , Independence Day, Republic Day and major Hindu festivals such as Navratras. Mata Vaishno Devi weather is also pleasant during these festivals. All the Hindu festivals occur when the weather and temperature are pleasant.

Does Katra have snow?

Yes, it does snow in Katra during the winter months. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Mandir looks even more beautiful during snowfall. It is one of the very few pilgrimage centres of such immense significance which receives heavy snowfall win winter months .

If you want to target visiting snowfall, then January is the best time to visit Vaishno Devi Mandir. That said, snowfall is not a daily phenomenon. Snowfall in Maa Vaishno Devi can happen on some day and might not happen on others. But when it happens, it is one of a kind of experiences .

You do not need to worry about walking in open air during snowfall . The entire walking route of Vaishno Devi has tin roof, which protects you from the elements viz. snow, sun, rain etc while offering sweeping bird’s eye view of the dense forests at the same time. Many people travel to Vaishno Devi every year hoping for snowfall. While some succeed, many don’t.

In which month there is snowfall in Vaishno Devi Temple?

Snowfall happens in Vaishno Devi in the months of December and January. It is an offbeat and charming time to make a journey to Vaishno Devi in these months.

Also pack in lots of woollens, monkey cap, gloves and windcheaters as the temperature of Vaishno Devi might dip to sub-zero levels, especially during the night and early morning. Weather in Vaishno Devi Bhawan during this time is very unpredictable.

Mostly, young, fit and enthusiastic people prefer the months of January and December for a hike to the revered Vaishno Devi Mandir. It is a unique experience to have Darshan of Mata Vaishno Devi during these months. You can expect snowfall at both Katra as well as Bhawan. Be prepared for the low Mata Vaishno Devi temperature.

Vaishno Devi temperature

As we have discussed above, Vaishno Devi temperature varies from season to season. While the Mata Vaishno Devi temperature can sore above bearable level in summers, the temperatures in Mata Vaishno in monsoon is low. However, expect Vaishno Devi temperature to dip below zero degrees Celsius during extreme cold months such as December and January.

Where to stay in Katra

There are several stay options in and around Katra. From INR 100 per day dormitories to INR 10,000 per day suites in 5-star luxury hotels, you will find a hotel for all budgets in Katra. Most of the hotels are located at walking distance from the vibrant Katra market. I prefer that as a walk here in the evening is very pleasant.

I recommend staying at the clean and comfortable accommodation facilitated by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. These hotels are available at below places:

Jammu : Saraswati Dham, close to railway station, Kalika Dham and Vaishnavi Dham.

Katra : Ashirwad Bhawan, Niharika Yatri Niwas and Shakti Bhawan.

You may book a reservation with them here .

Their Contact Details for enquiry and reservation are as below:

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Katra

Shakti Bhawan, Niharika Complex, Near the bus station.

Email : [email protected]

Phone : 01991-234053

I stayed in the luxurious Lemon Tree hotel. They have a huge lobby and nice spacious rooms. My rooms had views of Katra Railway Station. The only flipside is that you need to take a cab to Katra which is not located at a walking distance, which I mostly prefer!

How to reach at Katra

You can arrive at Katra via multiple options.

By Air: I arrived at Katra from Jammu international airport (IXJ). There are many security checks here so be prepared to become restless during the routine checks.

By Railways : On a tight budget and want to save money. Just book a sleeper class train ticket to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station (station code: SVDK). It is located very close to the Katra market. It is the most cost-effective way to travel to Vaishno Mata.

By Bus : Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation run many buses that ply between Jammu and Katra. These are another low-cost transport option.

By Road Trip : You can self-drive your car or hire a cab from Jammu to Katra and back for a low cost. On my second rip, I and my college friends Amit Manral and Kavita, drove all the way from Ghaziabad, took a break at a relative’s home at Phagwara in Punjab.

To save our energy, we hired a cab from Phagwara to Katra and back to Phagwara. We stayed for few more days in Phagwara to recuperate from all the walking and headed back to Ghaziabad by self-drive. Try this. It’s fun! And the Rajma Chawal and Chola Bhaturas you get on highway dhabas are heavenly.

Cost: The cost of our cab Toyota Platinum Etios was INR 7,000 for a round trip. For bigger cars, the charges go up to INR 10,000 for a round trip from Phagwara to Katra to Phagwara. Weather in Vaishno Devi Bhawan and season also plays a role in cost.

Conclusion : What is the best time to visit Mata Vaishno Devi

The beauty of Vaishno Devi is that, no matter which month of time you choose to travel here, it will surprise you with a different climate. If traveling here in rains is an experience itself, then summer is no less different. Mata Vaishno Devi temperature will be different in both the seasons.

While traveling here during festivals will brush upon you an infectious energy, hiking up the path during snow is what many people hope for. So ideally, there is nothing like an off-season month in Vaishno Devi. People still come here in hordes despite the odds. Do not worry too much about the perfect Vaishno Devi weather and head here when you think is the right time.

The view from my Soul Window has great weather!
