In a lot of ways, getting a PGA Tour card is like winning the lottery. The path is simple, but the odds are against you. If you beat those odds, however, the payout is handsome.

To play as a member on the PGA Tour, you must have a PGA Tour card. Players earn their card by accomplishing one of several requirements. Here’s a breakdown of just how to earn a PGA Tour card, and five ways to snag one.

1. Korn Ferry Tour Points

The most direct path to the PGA Tour is through the Korn Ferry Tour. While gaining Korn Ferry Tour status is no breeze in itself, once there, players have multiple avenues to earn their PGA Tour card.

There are 30 PGA Tour cards up for grabs through the Korn Ferry Tour each year. The top 30 players from the Korn Ferry Tour's season-long standings after the KFT Championship earn cards.

Getting into the Korn Ferry Tour is a process in itself, which can be accomplished through Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying School , or via the Forme Tour , Mackenzie (Canadian) Tour, or the PGA Tour Latinoamerica.

2. Korn Ferry Tour Three-Win Promotion

Korn Ferry Tour players can jump directly to the PGA Tour through an exemption known as the Three-Win Promotion . This promotion is exactly what it sounds like, after three Korn Ferry Tour wins in one season, a player gains his PGA Tour card.

The three-win promotion has proven to be a tough route to the big tour, as only 12 players have accomplished the feat since 1997.

3. PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership

Players can bypass the Korn Ferry Tour and jump straight to the PGA Tour by gaining PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership, then parlaying that into a PGA Tour card.

The PGA Tour reserves a small number of spots each week for non-Tour members through sponsor exemptions and Monday qualifiers. Non-members who compete in PGA Tour events through these avenues and perform well enough can earn Special Temporary Membership by accumulating the amount of FedExCup points equal to the player who finished 150th on the FedExCup list the previous season.

Once a player has accepted Special Temporary Membership, they can accept unlimited sponsor exemptions into PGA Tour events and can earn their card by finishing in the top 125 of the FedExCup points list during the regular season. Without Special Temporary Membership, non-members can only accept up to seven sponsor exemptions and compete in up to 12 PGA Tour events in a season.

Players on a Special Temporary Membership are not eligible for the FedExCup playoffs.

4. PGA Tour U Gets College Golfers to the PGA Tour

Through PGA Tour U , the PGA Tour has removed some hurdles for the top collegiate players who begin their transition into the professional ranks when their amateur careers end.

Top collegiate players in the final year of their college careers earn ranking points based on their performance in the NCAA Division I championship, PGA Tour events, major championships, and the Dubai Desert Classic. At the end of the season, five PGA Tour University first-team and second-team honorees are identified, along with 10 PGA Tour University third-team players.

The top player earns PGA TOUR membership for the rest of the season, plus the followig season. The top five players earn Korm Ferry Tour membership for the rest of the season, a spot in the Final Stage of Q-School, and the opportunity to accept unlimited sponsor exemptions into PGA Tour events throug the following season.

Nos. 6-10 earn conditional Korn Ferry Tour status for the current season, an exemption into the North American portion of the PGA TOUR Americas schedule, and an exemption into Second Stage of Q-School.

The 10 third-team honorees get exemptions to the North America Swing of the PGA TOUR Americas and exemptions into the Second Stage of Q-School.

5. Win a PGA Tour Event or Major Championship

The fastest way to earn a PGA Tour card is also the least likely. Anybody who wins a PGA Tour event gets an immediate two-year PGA Tour exemption. This means that any non-member who gets into the field at a PGA Tour event via a sponsor exemption or Monday qualifier, and goes on to win that event, gets their PGA Tour card.

Major champions get even more luxury, securing a five-year exemption to both the PGA Tour and European Tour. Three of the four major championships each year reserve spots for amateur players , meaning that theoretically an amateur could win the Masters, U.S. Open or Open Championship and secure their PGA Tour card for the next five years.

Benefits of a Tour Card

By having a PGA Tour card, a golfer can play in PGA Tour events. Many players also receive sponsor endorsements and advertising contracts. The PGA Tour card provides the player the opportunity to win large purses in tournaments . Players who make the cut in routine PGA Tour events generally cash at least a five-figure check, with that amount increasing with higher-stature events and major championships.

In 1965, the first PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament (called Q-School) was held and John Schlee won the event. In 1968 and 1969 and from 1975 to 1981, there were two tournaments each year.

Until 2013, Q-School was used to grant membership to the PGA Tour. Since then Q-School has served as a gateway to the Korn Ferry Tour, with PGA Tour Cards handed out through the Korn Ferry Tour regular season and finals.

Misconceptions

Many people think that if a player holds a PGA Tour Card, he can play in any event on the PGA tour. However, new PGA tour players are eligible for tournaments based on their priority ranking.

There’s some confusion around who qualifies as a ‘golf professional’, as anyone who is a golf expert and involved in either teaching or playing golf at a professional level could be considered a ‘golf pro’.

However, it’s widely accepted that there is a difference between golf professionals and professional golfers.

Golf professionals typically work in the business or management side of golf or teach or coach amateur or professional golfers.

Then , there are professional golfers who compete in high-profile tournaments like the Masters and the  PGA Tour .

Many pro golfers follow the route of becoming a golf professional beforehand, as they have a strong involvement with their club growing up and decide to get certified.

But equally, many start as amateurs and rely on their talent to get noticed.

We’ve covered all pathways in this guide on how to become a golf pro, so you can weigh up your options and take actionable steps to progress your career.

Hoping to work in the business side of golf? If so, it makes sense to get an overview of the roles available if you gain employment at a golf club and decide to become a  PGM Associate .

To give you an idea of the different types of golf professionals, the  PGA’s research  suggests that those who complete their qualifications fulfil one or more of the following roles:

  • a qualified teacher or coach
  • a knowledgeable retailer
  • a customer advisor
  • a specialist club fitter
  • a manager of services, products, facilities, and people
  • a tournament organiser
  • a good player

Hopefully, this gives you a good overview of your career prospects.

Regarding job titles, the highest level you can reach at a club is typically known as a  Head Professional , followed by  Associate Professional s . They usually manage the club and other employees who work there.

The alternative route is becoming a  Teaching Professional , which is a more practical role overall and mainly involves coaching clients.

Head Professional and Teaching Professional roles can sometimes interlink depending on the club, but there is room to specialise in one area over the other.

The path to becoming a golf professional isn’t complicated. Still, it requires a high level of skill and dedication to your development as a player, even if you decide to work business side.

Professional golfing is certainly on the cards for those who go down this route, as long as they’re equipped with the skills to compete at an elite level.

Here’s a quick overview of the path to becoming a golf professional in the UK.

1.     Complete the PGM Associate Program

Every golf club has a Head Professional running their operations, including managing the course and other employees who work there.

This role carries a large responsibility and is the most advanced path you can reach when learning how to become a golf pro outside of competing in tournaments.

Suppose you want to eventually become a Head Professional through the PGA. In that case, you’ll need to complete their  PGM Associate Program  and become an Associate Professional before you can climb through the ranks. This involves:

  • a background check
  • passing a qualifying test
  • gaining employment as an Associate Professional
  • completing the player ability test (PAT)

This could be helpful if you want to become a pro golfer, as the PAT test is a great way to prove your skill in the sport.

However, as mentioned earlier, you don’t technically require this to enter tournaments and get noticed.

2.     Complete a golf-related bachelor’s degree

Gaining a  PGA qualification  is a popular route to becoming a golf professional in the UK, as their degree programmes are the most respected golf qualifications in the world.

If you’re hoping to work business side and want to climb the ranks once you graduate, this could be the best route for you.

A foundation degree in Golf Studies (FdSc) is available at the  University of Birmingham  and can be converted into a BSc (Hons) in Professional Golf Studies.

The University of the Highlands and Islands also runs a  Diploma in Higher Education Golf Studies  (DipHE), which can be converted into a BA in Professional Golf, with an option to continue to Hons.

You can also study a BSc in  Applied Golf Management Studies  taught in partnership with the University of Birmingham, which grants you membership as a PGA Professional subject to status and application.

3.     Progress through PGA titles

There is the opportunity for development once you’ve qualified as a PGA Member through gaining more experience, education, achievements, and accreditations.

The first option is to move from ‘Class A’ to ‘Class AA’ status, which involves gaining 100 CPD points within three years through suggested professional development.

However, if you reach the age of 55 and haven’t progressed from Class AA status, you will remain at this level for life.

Aside from these initial titles, you can also apply for any of the following:

  • PGA advanced professional —meets relevant criteria and has been qualified for a minimum of three years
  • PGA fellow professional —meets the relevant criteria and has been qualified for a minimum of eight years
  • PGA advanced fellow professional —meets the relevant criteria and has been qualified for a minimum of ten years
  • PGA master professional —meets the relevant criteria and has been qualified for a minimum of fifteen years

As you’ve probably gathered, many professional golf players will hold a PGA qualification, so the two pathways often interlink.

But not all skilled players who qualify will go on to become professional golfers, and you also don’t need to qualify to become one, either.

If you’re a highly skilled player dedicated to your growth in the sport, then there’s a chance you could become a pro golfer if you set your mind to it.

Since the PGA Tour is the world’s largest professional golf tournament organiser, it makes sense for us to discuss how to reach this level of competition—entering these tournaments is the most popular end goal for aspiring golfers.

The steps themselves are quite simple. It’s what’s involved in the process that makes it easier said than done.

You need to be great at what you do, extremely driven, and prepared to put the rest of your life on hold if you want to make it. Here are the next steps if you think you’ve got what it takes.

1.     Get up to professional standard

Most players fall at the first hurdle, as this is certainly one part that’s easier said than done. But if you can overcome the challenge of mastering golf, you’re already halfway there.

Recruiting a coach is a good idea if you can afford the investment. With their guidance, you can establish a solid training programme for perfecting your technique and improving faster than working alone.

The game is massively competitive, especially since many golfers start young. But if you’ve got the grit and determination to consistently work on every element of your game, you’ll overtake those who give up too soon.

2.     Take a swing at amateur events

Once you’ve achieved a high standard and proven your skill in a few friendly competitions at your local club, it’s time to progress to more formal events.

Wondering where to start? Using the  Golf Empire  search tool, you can browse over 10,000 amateur open golf tournaments at more than 1,500 golf clubs in the UK.

You can also check out  amateur golf tours and series  for when you feel you’re good enough to enter.

You can usually enter as many or as few events as you wish, meaning you can get a taste of what is expected at these events without committing to the full thing.

It’s easier said than done, but a huge part of learning how to become a professional golfer is dominating amateur competitions.

Progressing through the ranks will get you noticed and potentially lead to you being invited to or qualifying for a more prestigious event—this is how many golfers go professional.

3.     Commit to going professional

If you reach the point where you’re consistently performing well in amateur competitions and you’re determined enough to take your career further, this is where you can take things to the next level.

Only you can decide whether or not you’re ready to go pro, as golf differs from other sports where you’re signed up to a team. You essentially decide to compete in professional events instead of their amateur counterparts.

You should be at the best level you can be before registering for professional events, however, as they are usually very expensive to enter and highly competitive.

In the UK, the easiest transition into professional events is becoming a PGA member and entering the  PGA Open series , most of which have a £100 registration fee and a £20,000 prize fund.

Taking this leap of faith is a big step, but it’s worth a shot if you know you have what it takes and can afford to do so.

Don’t let age be a hurdle if you’re a great golfer, as there have been many late bloomers before. It’s a matter of dedication and skill above all else.

Take U.S. golfer  Allen Doyle , for example—he turned pro at 46, proving it’s never too late to chase your dreams if you stay focused.

4.     Sign up for Q-school

Finishing in the top 25 on the  Korn Ferry Tour  is a surefire way to earn a PGA Tour card, but you can only enter this tour if you go to  Q-school  first.

This process involves competing over four months to finish in one of the top 25 spots, which earns you an unconditional place on the Korn Ferry Tour. However, you can still get a conditional place if you finish in the 26-50 range.

If you compete well enough to finish in the top five of final stage Q-school, you can gain your PGA Tour card this way instead of competing in the Korn Ferry Tour.

5.     Compete in the Korn Ferry Tour

If you’ve come this far, you’ve already become a professional golfer, but there’s much more to achieve if you keep pushing on.

The Korn Ferry Tour sits just beneath the PGA Tour, and making it to the finals and finishing in the top 25 guarantees you a spot. Finishing in the 26-50 range gives you conditional status, and you’ll still have a chance to make your debut.

6.     Reach PGA Tour player status

This is likely one of the most important stages of your career.

If you finish in the top 25 at the Korn Ferry Tour or secure your card through a conditional status, you’ll get a chance to compete amongst the world’s most elite golf players.

This will be no mean feat. But now you know the steps involved, you can devise a step-by-step plan for achieving this level.  SMART goals  are a great way to ensure progress.

7.     Keep your spot on the PGA Tour

While you’ve likely achieved your wildest dreams at this stage, now is not the time to get complacent.

To make your hard work pay off, you should do everything it takes to ensure you keep your spot as one of the 125 best players in the sport.

You’ll be standing on golf’s world stage, and you may never make it back if you let your game slip.

Avoid injuries at all costs, maintain your confidence, and never underestimate the importance of keeping up to speed through practice.

Winning high-profile competitions such as the  Players Championship  or  The Masters  solidifies your status as a top golfer and can even guarantee your spot on the PGA Tour for years at a time.

If you win the Players Championship, you receive a five-year exemption, a three-year invite to the Masters, and a three-year exemption for the Open and the PGA Championship.

What is a PGA Tour Card?

Definition and purpose.

A PGA Tour Card is a coveted membership card that grants professional golfers the opportunity to compete in the highest level of golf tournaments organized by the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of America. It serves as a symbol of achievement and recognition in the golfing world, signifying that a player has reached a certain level of skill and expertise.

The purpose of a PGA Tour Card is to provide players with access to a wide range of prestigious tournaments, including major championships such as the Masters, the U.S. Open, the Open Championship, and the PGA Championship. It allows golfers to compete against the best players in the world, showcase their talents, and strive for greatness on the grandest stages of the sport.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for a PGA Tour Card, golfers must meet certain criteria set by the PGA of America. These criteria ensure that only the most talented and deserving players are granted membership and the accompanying privileges.

One of the main eligibility is a golfer’s performance on the PGA Tour. Players can earn a PGA Tour Card through various means, including:

  • Qualifying School : The PGA Tour conducts a Qualifying School, also known as Q-School, where aspiring professionals compete for a limited number of available Tour Cards. Q-School consists of multiple stages, with each stage eliminating a certain number of players until the final stage, where the top finishers earn their Tour Cards.
  • Web.com Tour : The Web.com Tour, which serves as the developmental tour for the PGA Tour, offers another pathway to earn a PGA Tour Card. The top performers on the Web.com Tour during a given season are granted Tour Cards for the following season, providing them with the opportunity to compete at the highest level.
  • Sponsorship and Exemptions : Golfers can also earn a PGA Tour Card through sponsor invitations and exemptions. Sponsors may choose to invite promising players to compete in certain tournaments, and exceptional performances in these events can lead to the awarding of a Tour Card. Exemptions, on the other hand, are granted to players who meet specific criteria, such as being a former major champion or having a certain ranking on the Official World Golf Ranking.

It is important to note that the for a PGA Tour Card may change from time to time, as determined by the PGA of America. These changes are typically aimed at ensuring a fair and competitive field of players, while also providing opportunities for emerging talent to showcase their skills.

How to Obtain a PGA Tour Card

Obtaining a PGA Tour card is the ultimate dream for many aspiring golfers. It opens up a world of opportunities to compete at the highest level and showcase their skills on the grandest stage. In order to secure a PGA Tour card, players must go through a rigorous process that tests their abilities and determination. Let’s explore the various paths to obtaining a PGA Tour card:

Qualifying School

Qualifying School, often referred to as Q-School, is one of the most well-known and challenging routes to earning a PGA Tour card. It is a series of tournaments that acts as a qualifying event, designed to identify the top talent among aspiring professional golfers. Q-School is held annually and consists of multiple stages, each more demanding than the previous.

During Q-School, players compete against each other in a highly competitive environment, striving to secure one of the coveted PGA Tour cards. The tournament is conducted over several rounds, with each round eliminating a certain number of players. The pressure is intense, as the stakes are high and the margin for error is slim.

Web.com Tour

Another pathway to earning a PGA Tour card is through the Web.com Tour. Formerly known as the Nationwide Tour, the Web.com Tour serves as a developmental tour for aspiring professional golfers. It provides a platform for players to hone their skills, gain valuable experience, and ultimately earn their way onto the PGA Tour.

The Web.com Tour consists of a series of tournaments held throughout the season, with players accumulating points based on their performance. At the end of the season, the top players on the Web.com Tour money list earn their PGA Tour cards for the following season. This system allows players to showcase their abilities and compete against their peers, with the ultimate goal of securing a spot on the PGA Tour.

Sponsorship and Exemptions

While Q-School and the Web.com Tour are the traditional routes to obtaining a PGA Tour card, there are also other avenues available to talented golfers. One such avenue is through sponsorship and exemptions. Sponsors play a crucial role in supporting aspiring golfers by providing financial backing and opportunities to compete in professional tournaments.

Sponsorship can come in various forms, such as endorsement deals or financial support for tournament entry fees. Additionally, exemptions are granted to players based on their performance in certain tournaments or their status as amateur champions. These exemptions allow players to bypass the traditional qualifying processes and earn direct entry into PGA Tour events.

It is worth noting that sponsorship and exemptions are not easy to come by. They are typically reserved for players who have demonstrated exceptional talent or have a unique story that captures the attention of sponsors. However, for those fortunate enough to secure sponsorship or exemptions, it can be a valuable stepping stone towards earning a PGA Tour card.

Benefits of Having a PGA Tour Card

Having a PGA Tour Card comes with numerous that can significantly impact a golfer’s career. In this section, we will explore the advantages of possessing a PGA Tour Card, including access to PGA Tour events, prize money and endorsements, and player rankings and opportunities.

Access to PGA Tour Events

One of the most coveted advantages of holding a PGA Tour Card is the unrestricted access to PGA Tour events. Being able to compete in these prestigious tournaments opens doors to unlimited opportunities for professional golfers. The PGA Tour hosts some of the most prestigious and highly anticipated golf tournaments in the world, such as The Masters, the U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship.

Golfers with a PGA Tour Card gain the privilege of participating in these major events, which not only offer substantial prize money but also provide a platform to showcase their skills and compete against the best players in the world. The exposure gained from playing in these events can significantly boost a golfer’s reputation and open doors to future sponsorships and endorsements.

Prize Money and Endorsements

When it comes to professional sports, financial rewards play a crucial role in sustaining a career. Holding a PGA Tour Card grants golfers the opportunity to compete for substantial prize money. PGA Tour events offer some of the highest prize purses in the world of golf, with millions of dollars up for grabs in each tournament.

Earning prize money not only provides financial stability but also serves as a measure of a golfer’s success and skill. The more successful a golfer is on the PGA Tour, the higher their chances of earning significant earnings through prize money.

Furthermore, having a PGA Tour Card opens doors to lucrative endorsement deals. Successful golfers often attract the attention of various companies and brands looking to associate themselves with top athletes. These endorsement opportunities can provide additional income streams for golfers, as well as valuable exposure to a broader audience.

Player Rankings and Opportunities

Possessing a PGA Tour Card also grants golfers the opportunity to climb the player rankings and seize various career-enhancing opportunities. The PGA Tour maintains a comprehensive ranking system that evaluates a golfer’s performance across tournaments, determining their position among their peers.

Higher rankings not only increase a golfer’s visibility but also provide access to exclusive events and invitations. For example, players who consistently perform well on the PGA Tour can earn entry into prestigious tournaments like the Players Championship and the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Additionally, higher rankings can lead to invitations to international events such as the Ryder Cup or the Presidents Cup, where golfers have the chance to represent their country and compete against top players from around the world. These opportunities not only offer a chance to showcase skills but also enhance a golfer’s reputation and increase their marketability.

Challenges and Requirements of Maintaining a PGA Tour Card

The journey to obtaining a PGA Tour Card is no small feat, but the and don’t end there. Once a player has secured their card, they are faced with a whole new set of expectations and obligations to maintain their membership. In this section, we will explore the performance expectations, tour membership obligations, and the requalification process that players must navigate in order to remain part of the prestigious PGA Tour.

Performance Expectations

Securing a PGA Tour Card is a testament to a golfer’s skill and determination, but the pressure doesn’t dissipate once they become a member. The PGA Tour demands consistent high-level performance from its players, and maintaining a certain standard is crucial. The competition is fierce, and players must continuously prove themselves against some of the best golfers in the world.

To meet the performance expectations, players must demonstrate their ability to consistently compete at a competitive level. This means delivering strong performances in tournaments, consistently making cuts, and accumulating enough FedExCup points to retain their card. The PGA Tour is not for the faint of heart – it requires unwavering dedication and the ability to thrive under pressure.

Tour Membership Obligations

Being a PGA Tour member comes with a set of obligations that go beyond simply playing golf. These obligations are in place to ensure the smooth functioning of the tour and to maintain the integrity of the game. Tour members have a responsibility to uphold the values and standards of the PGA Tour.

One of the primary obligations of PGA Tour members is to participate in the tournaments scheduled by the tour. This means players must be prepared to travel extensively, often spending weeks away from home, as they compete in various tournaments across the country. This commitment requires a great deal of sacrifice and dedication, as players must constantly adapt to different courses, climates, and time zones.

Additionally, PGA Tour members are expected to conduct themselves professionally both on and off the course. They are ambassadors of the sport and must adhere to a strict code of conduct. This includes good sportsmanship, respecting fellow players and officials, and engaging with fans and sponsors. The PGA Tour places great emphasis on character and integrity, and members must exemplify these qualities.

Requalification Process

While obtaining a PGA Tour Card is a significant achievement, it’s important to remember that it is not a lifetime guarantee. Players must go through a requalification process each year to retain their card and continue their journey on the PGA Tour. This process adds an extra layer of pressure and uncertainty to the already demanding nature of professional golf.

The requalification process involves a combination of performance-based criteria and exemptions. Players must accumulate a certain number of FedExCup points over the course of the season to retain their card. The exact number of points needed varies each year, making it a moving target for players. This ensures that the tour remains competitive and constantly pushes players to improve.

Exemptions also play a role in the requalification process. Certain achievements, such as winning a tournament or finishing in the top 125 of the FedExCup standings, can provide players with exemptions for the following season. These exemptions alleviate some of the pressure and uncertainty, allowing players to focus on their game without constantly worrying about their card status.

However, it’s important to note that exemptions are not guaranteed, and players must still perform at a high level to earn them. This adds an element of unpredictability to the requalification process, as players must maintain consistency throughout the season to secure their place on the tour for another year.

Difference Between a PGA Tour Card and Other Tour Cards

European tour card.

The European Tour Card is a coveted credential that grants professional golfers access to compete in tournaments across Europe. While similar to the PGA Tour Card in terms of providing opportunities for players to showcase their skills and compete at a high level, there are some notable between the two.

One major distinction is the geographical focus. The European Tour Card primarily caters to golfers who wish to compete in Europe and its surrounding regions. This allows players to experience the diverse array of courses and cultures that Europe has to offer. In contrast, the PGA Tour Card focuses on tournaments held predominantly in the United States, although there are some international events as well.

Another difference lies in the qualification process. To obtain a European Tour Card, golfers must go through a rigorous qualifying process that includes various stages of competition. This process typically involves a combination of scoring well in specific tournaments, earning enough money or ranking points, and successfully navigating through the qualifying school. On the other hand, the PGA Tour Card has its own unique qualifying system, such as the Qualifying School and the Web.com Tour.

The European Tour Card also offers its own set of and . One advantage is the opportunity to compete against a diverse field of international players, which can provide valuable experience and exposure. Additionally, players with a European Tour Card have the chance to accumulate Official World Golf Ranking points, which can enhance their global ranking and open doors to other prestigious events.

However, there are also certain associated with maintaining a European Tour Card. The tour’s schedule can be demanding, with players often required to travel extensively to compete in different countries and climates. This can lead to physical and mental fatigue, requiring players to carefully manage their schedule and prioritize their health and well-being.

Asian Tour Card

The Asian Tour Card is another prestigious credential that offers professional golfers the opportunity to compete in tournaments across Asia. Like the European Tour Card, it has its own unique characteristics that set it apart from the PGA Tour Card.

One key distinction is the focus on the Asian region. The Asian Tour Card provides golfers with the chance to compete in countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Malaysia, among others. How To Become A PGA Professional

PGA professionals play a key role in growing the game, have multiple career options and can play competitively

A PGA Pro shows a drill for a driver tip

The PGA of America was founded in 1916 and today consists of almost 29,000 members. A key aim of the PGA is to grow the game and PGA Professionals work in a range of posts, from coaching to administration, to marketing, research, management and more.

PGA professionals are able to teach, to move up and sideways in their careers and to compete in PGA run tournaments across the US.

Becoming a PGA professional can clearly open doors, but how does one do it?

Becoming a PGA Professional

PGA Pro Michael Block made waves at the 2023 PGA Championship, where he made a hole-in-one in his T15th finish

There are two main routes to become a PGA member and PGA professional – the PGA Professional Golf Management (PGM) Program and the PGA Golf Management University Program.

The PGA PGM Associate Program

To apply for membership you need to complete the PGM Associate Program. Firstly there’s a basic background check, applicants must also reach a qualifying level by reviewing the four Qualifying Level courses: Introduction to the PGA PGM Program, PGA Constitution, Introduction to the Rules of Golf, and Career Enhancement. As courses are reviewed, applicants will complete accompanying quizzes.

Then there’s the Player Ability Test (PAT). Within eight years prior to application, the applicant must post a 36-hole within 15 shots of the current course rating of the course played upon. The test is normally conducted in one day. Fewer than 20% of those taking the playing test return a passing score.

Once the background check, qualifying level and PAT have been met, applicants with eligible employment can apply to the PGA PGM 3.1 Associate Program.

It’s a three level process and associates have nine years to complete it to become elected to PGA membership.

PGA Golf Management University Program

The PGA Golf Management University Program provides extensive classroom courses, internship experience and opportunities for player development in a four-and-one-half to five year program for aspiring PGA Professionals.

Offered at 18 universities across the US, the University Program allows students to earn a degree in areas such as Marketing, Business Administration, Hospitality Administration, Recreation and Park Management, providing them with the knowledge and skills to succeed in the golf industry.

Upon completion students can apply for PGA Membership.

How To Become A PGA Professional in the UK

There are a number of routes to become a PGA Professional in the UK.

All routes are operated in partnership with either The University of Birmingham or The University of the Highlands and the Islands in Inverness, Scotland.

The PGA offers a Foundation Degree in Professional Golf Studies (FdSc), which is a core element of The PGA Training Programme, and is awarded by The University of Birmingham. The course is delivered online, with face-to-face sessions held at the PGA National Training Academy and the famous Belfry Golf facility.

It is made up of 12 modules taken over three years, which cover the topics of: Sports Science, Equipment Technology, Coaching Theory and Golf Business & Management. The Foundation Degree equates to the first two years of an Honours Degree.

Applicants must be working at a golf facility under a PGA Training Professional and have a maximum handicap index of 6.4 (men) or 8.4 (women).

Royal Dornoch in the Highlands

For students in Scotland, the education programme awarded by The University of the Highlands and the Islands is The Diploma in Higher Education Golf Studies (DipHE).

It is primarily aimed at those with Scottish residency and is made up of 12 modules taken over three years, which covers the same topics and content as the FdSc programme.

With both courses PGA Trainees work at a golf facility under the guidance of a PGA Professional and study part-time. This is alongside playing, practising their golf, playing in PGA Tournaments and learning to coach.

It's not easy, but the rewards can be huge!

How Long Does It Take To Become A PGA Pro?

Becoming a fully qualified PGA Professional can be a lengthy process. Courses in the UK are upwards of three years.

In the USA - The PGA Golf Management University Program is four or five years and, if going the PGA PGM Associate Program route - applicants are given up to nine years to meet the necessary qualification criteria.

What Handicap Do You Need To Become A PGA Professional?

In the USA, you need to be good enough to pass the Playing Ability Test (PAT). To do that, the applicant must post a 36-hole within 15 shots of the current course rating of the course played upon.

The test is normally conducted in one day. Fewer than 20% of those taking the playing test return a passing score.

In the UK, you need to have a maximum handicap index of 6.4 (men) or 8.4 (women).

How Are PGA Tour Pros Different to PGA Pros?

A Tour Pro or touring professional golfer predominantly aims to make their living by enjoying a successful competitive playing career. A PGA Tour pro, plies their trade, competing on the PGA Tour.

The PGA Professional has qualified as a member of the Professional Golfers Association - they may be a teaching pro or they may work in the business or administration of golf. Although they may well compete in PGA events, they will also be, most likely, involved professionally in another aspect of golf.

For many golfers, the ultimate dream is to become a PGA Tour player . It’s the place where the best golfers in the world are competing each week, trying to win the biggest prizes and the best tournaments.

But PGA Tour cards don’t come easily and you have to earn it. Some players are good enough to win 20 times and earn lifetime membership.

So how do you get a card for the PGA Tour? Here’s a quick look at the routes professional golfers have to go down to get their place and the PGA Tour card requirements.

Unlocking Professional Golf: The Significance of a PGA Tour Card

A PGA Tour card is what golfers earn so that they can play on the PGA Tour .

Although PGA Tour players do actually get a physical card, it’s more about the status they achieve by having one, which lets them compete on the biggest professional tour in golf.

A PGA Tour card gives players full playing rights for all events in the regular season , with the chance to get to the FedEx Cup Playoffs at the end of the year.

Some players who don’t have full playing status on the tour might have a conditional status which allows them to play in a few PGA Tour events a year.

The Road to Glory: Earning A PGA Tour Card

Golfers looking to get a spot on the PGA Tour can do so through a number of different routes.

The following methods are how to earn a PGA Tour card:

  • Top 30 position on the previous season Korn Ferry Tour
  • Top 10 position on the previous season DP World Tour
  • Top 5 at Final Stage Q-School
  • Number one ranking at end of PGA Tour University Velocity Global Ranking
  • Earn enough points from sponsor exemptions
  • Win a PGA Tour event or Major within a set amount of previous years

Road To The PGA Tour

Korn Ferry Tour

The most common route for achieving a PGA Tour card is via the tour one-below the PGA Tour, the Korn Ferry Tour.

After a full season on the tour, the top 30 players at the Korn Ferry Tour Finals will be given a PGA card.

The Korn Ferry Tour features many great players from out of college, but also lots of pros that have had and subsequently lost a PGA Tour card . Therefore, the standard of golfer playing each week is extremely high.

Those who manage to finish in the top 30 at the close of the season will have a level of playing status on the PGA Tour for next season, based on the Priority Rankings.

Players on the Korn Ferry Tour also have the chance of earning automatic promotion to the PGA Tour by winning three Korn Ferry Tour events in one season.

A far from easy task if you ask me, but if you’re good enough to have three Korn Ferry Tour wins in a season, you’re certainly good enough to compete on the PGA Tour.

Ed’s T houghts ⛳

The Korn Ferry Tour route is one of the best ways to gain a PGA Tour card because it gives players a full season of playing, similar to what they can expect on the PGA Tour.

It’s far from easy, but at least it gives players who are good enough the experience of travelling and competing for decent-sized cheques each week.

One such player who has had struggles and seen success on the PGA Tour via the Korn Ferry Tour is Max Homa.

Homa played on the Korn Ferry Tour ( formerly Web.com Tour ) in the 2013-14 season, finishing up 17th in the season money list and earning a PGA Tour card for 2014-15.

After a solid first season on the PGA Tour, Homa lost his card in 2017 and had to return to the Korn Ferry Tour.

Going into the 2018 Korn Ferry Tour Finals, Homa was lying 73rd in the rankings and needed a good few weeks to make a return to the PGA Tour, which he managed, eventually finishing 24th in the Priority Rankings.

The following season, Homa went on to win the Wells Fargo Championship on the PGA Tour and has since won multiple times, and has competed in the Ryder Cup for Team USA.

DP World Tour

More recently, the DP World Tour has become another route to the PGA Tour, with the top 10 players in the Race to Dubai rankings, not already exempt, gaining a PGA Tour card.

The leading European Tour is a top-level tour in its own right, with many of the best players in Europe and the rest of the world competing in some great events such as the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Now, as part of the Strategic Alliance, those players who are doing well on the DP World Tour can also test their games more regularly on the PGA Tour with a card.

The PGA Tour now holds qualifying for those players who either lost their tour card or want to earn one for the next season, offering the top five and ties a spot at the end of a very challenging qualification process.

The process consists of Pre-Qualifying, First Stage, Second Stage and Final Stage qualifying. Many players will have exemptions which will see them through to either the First, Second or Final Stages.

Over 1200 players start out hoping to earn qualification for the PGA Tour, but just five places are on offer.

Those looking to gain a place on the PGA Tour, not exempt at any stage, will end up having to play a total of 15 rounds of golf against some very strong competition.

Those who finish outside of the top 5 at the Final Stage will still gain a level of Korn Ferry Tour status.

PGA Tour University

The player ranked top at the final PGA Tour University Ranking will then be given a PGA Tour membership for the current season.

This gives the best player from the college game to get a head-start on the PGA Tour.

If they want to hang onto the card, however, they will need to have a strong finish in a few of the available events to ensure enough FedEx Cup points are earned and a top 125 place is achieved.

Sponsor Exemptions

Sponsor exemptions are a great way of gaining a tour card if no official playing status currently exists.

Usually, players can play in seven sponsor exemptions a season. With a few good results, a professional can earn enough points to secure their tour card for the next season on the PGA Tour.

This is obviously a good route for young players, perhaps straight out of college or who may have done well in a major as an amateur.

After reaching the top of the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Jon Rahm received multiple invites to the PGA Tour in 2016, eventually earning Special Temporary Member status and then securing enough points as a non-member to get his PGA Tour card for the following season.

Win An Event

Perhaps the most obvious method of gaining a PGA Tour card is by winning an event on the PGA Tour or a major championship.

If you haven’t already got a tour card then to tee it up in a PGA Tour event you’ll either have to get a sponsors invite or go through the tournaments Monday qualifiers.

PGA Tour Win Exemptions

A standard PGA Tour win comes with a two-year exemption to the tour, whilst some elevated events such as World Golf Championships, the Memorial Tournament and the Tour Championship are worth a three-year exemption.

Those that win one of the major championships such as the Open Championship or the PGA Championship will get themselves exemption to both the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour.

Danny Willet, for example, managed to win the 2016 Masters which meant that he gained a PGA Tour card for the next five years.

Final Thoughts

There’s a few different methods to get a PGA Tour card, none of which are very easy.

It takes years of practice and plenty of incredibly good golf to become a PGA Tour pro, something only a few will ever achieve.

Tyler Duncan played his best golf over the final nine holes of his long season, making four birdies on the back nine to close with a 66. That meant getting a PGA Tour card for the third straight season, twice through what now is called the Korn Ferry Tour Finals.

D.J. Trahan also delivered a clutch moment with an approach to 3 feet for birdie on the last hole to get one of the last cards.

The Korn Ferry Tour Championship, the final chance to earn a PGA Tour card for 25 players, was at times exciting, exhausting and exhilarating for those who made it. And it’s also just the start.

Getting a PGA Tour card is tough. Keeping it is no picnic.

The new PGA Tour season starts Sept. 12 at the Greenbrier, with six domestic events and one at the Mexican resort of Mayakoba, all of them offering full FedExCup points and an invitation to the Masters for the winner.

Optimism is never higher. The PGA Tour in September is right up there with Major League Baseball in March.

Now for the bad news: If the last three years are any indication, some 60 percent of the players who earned PGA Tour cards won’t be keeping them.

Of the 50 players who earned PGA Tour cards last year – either the regular season or the finals series of what is now the Korn Ferry Tour – 31 failed to finish among the top 125 in the FedExCup to retain full status.

Thirty players failed to keep their cards in 2018, and 29 did not keep their cards in 2017.

As for that optimism? There’s no predicting who’s going to get hot in what week. One adage passed down from veterans over the years is that players typically make 80 percent of their money from 20 percent of their tournaments.

Five players who earned cards from the Korn Ferry Tour – either the regular season or the finals series – won on the PGA Tour the next year. That includes Max Homa at Quail Hollow and Adam Long at the Desert Classic, where he beat Phil Mickelson by one shot.

The previous year, seven players who had to earn tour cards went on to win, four of them getting a Masters invitation. That group included Ted Potter Jr., who took down Dustin Johnson at Pebble Beach. And in 2016-17, the list of nine winners included Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau.

PATTY T’S TIMING

Patty Tavatanakit is sure to join the LPGA tour next year based on her play on the Symetra Tour.

But the UCLA alum still has to wait.

Tavatanakit rallied from six shots behind to win the Sioux Falls GreatLife Challenge last week for her third victory of the season on the Symetra Tour. Previously, three Symetra Tour victories earned an instant promotion to the LPGA, a policy that changed last year with the introduction of the Q-Series on the tour, which is a pair of 72-hole tournaments in consecutive weeks.

The 19-year-old Thai didn’t sound bothered by it all. Tavatanakit is No. 2 on the money list with $110,487, leaving her about $3,000 short of Perrine Delacour, who has played 17 times on the Symetra Tour. Tavatanakit has won three times in just eight starts.

''It’s hard to get a picture of what I’ve been able to accomplish,’' Tavatanakit said. ''I set my goals and have lived in the moment really well for the past three months since turning pro. I just focus on what I need to do to be a better player. All I want is to improve every time I step on the course. It’s pretty unreal for how far I have come and what the future holds too.’'

CALLING ON THE HALL

Justin Rose doesn’t know the criteria to be considered or even voted for the World Golf Hall of Fame.

His objective is to take the guesswork out of the equation.

Strictly by his PGA Tour record, Rose has too many other players ahead of his 10 victories and one major championship. But he has 10 other victories on the other five major tours in golf, not to mention that Olympic gold medal from Rio in 2016. He also has a FedExCup title and has reached No. 1 in the world.

''I’m knocking on the door, but I feel like you want to bash the door down and make it an easy decision,’' Rose said. ''I don’t want to be on the fringe of it.’'

Next in line is Tiger Woods, who turns 44 at the end of the year. Rose turns 40 next year, as does Adam Scott, who has more victories on the PGA Tour and worldwide; and Sergio Garcia. Jim Furyk also merits plenty of consideration with his 17 victories, a U.S. Open and uncanny consistency.

''Is it two majors and 20 PGA Tour events? I don’t know if there’s a criteria,’' Rose said. ''I’ve definitely had some cool moments in my career that definitely stand out. Hopefully, if it ever happened, they’d look favorably on that stuff. But I want to kick on. I want to prove more to myself. I want to be a multiple major champion.’'

He mentioned players like Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka and Padraig Harrington, each of whom won three majors or more in a span of three seasons.

''If you catch fire and you catch a break here and there, you can pick up a couple of majors pretty quick,’' he said. ''So I’m looking for one of those spells and phases late in my career.’'

NO NEED FOR OVERTIME

Kevin Tway began the season by winning the Safeway Open in a three-way playoff. Three weeks later, Xander Schauffele made birdie on the first extra hole to beat Tony Finau in a playoff in Shanghai. Charles Howell III ended the fall portion of the season with a playoff victory at Sea Island over Patrick Rodgers.

That was on Nov. 18. And that was the last playoff of the PGA Tour season.

None of the 37 tournaments (stroke play) from Kapalua in January through East Lake in August had to go extra holes.

There were 13 events won by one stroke, though not all of them came down to the final shot. Among the tournaments that were a birdie putt away from a sudden-death playoff were Adam Long making birdie on the 72nd hole in the Desert Classic, Keith Mitchell making birdie on the last hole of the Honda Classic and perhaps the most memorable, Matthew Wolff making eagle on the final hole to win the 3M Open, but only after Collin Morikawa narrowly missed his eagle putt.

For the fifth straight year, the PGA Tour had more than 100 players go over $1 million in earnings for the year. There were 114 millionaires in 2019, tying the record set the previous year. ... Former U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell is playing the Porsche Open, his first regular European Tour start in nearly five years. ... Women’s PGA champion Hannah Green of Australia became the fifth player to win multiple times on the LPGA tour this season. Jin Young Ko leads the way with four victories, including two majors. ... Scottie Scheffler won the Korn Ferry Tour points list for the regular season and the finals, meaning he is exempt for The Players Championship and will remain at the top of the priority list all of next season.

scheffler_1920_kftc19_d4.jpg

STAT OF THE WEEK

Webb Simpson earned the most money of anyone who did not win a PGA Tour event last season. He finished No. 10 with $4.69 million.

''People are not giving us much of a chance. I mean, the whole of the U.S. team is in the top 20. We have one player in the top 20, and that’s just the way it is. But somebody is going to win 15+ points, and at the end of the day, that’s our aim.’' – Presidents Cup captain Ernie Els.

Ferguson is a golf writer for The Associated Press.

How does someone get into The Players Championship? There are 19 ways and none of them are easy

Want to tee it up in The Players Championship?

Knock yourself out. Like any PGA Tour event, it’s open to anyone who shoots the low numbers.

All one needs to do is turn professional and qualify for the Tour ... or play on other tours (PGA Tour Champions, Korn Ferry, DP World Tour) and use various avenues they have to punch a ticket to Ponte Vedra Beach.

There are 19 avenues to The Players Championship and all of them require being a world-class player. It also isn’t a lifetime achievement award. Winning the Masters means you’re there for most of the rest of your life. Winning a British Open or PGA is a golden ticket until you’re 65 years old.

Winning a Players buys only five more years.

Nick Dunlap will travel the shortest possible path to a Players Championship. He received a sponsor invitation for The American Express, then won the 72-hole tournament to earn PGA Tour membership, once he turned pro and left Alabama.

Some players require years to earn their spot at the Stadium Course.

Here are the requirements to enter The Players Championship. And there are no short-cuts:

Winner of the 2021 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

Winners of the Genesis Invitational in the last three years (2022-2024).

Winners of the Arnold Palmer Invitational in the last three years (2022-2024).

Winners of the Memorial Tournament in the last three years (2021–2023).

Current Men’s Golf Olympic Gold Medalist.

The leading player to earn a PGA Tour card from the prior season’s Race to Dubai Ranking.

The leading player from the prior season’s Official Korn Ferry Tour points list.

Top golfers are unlikely to play in Myrtle Beach, SC’s first PGA tournament? Here’s why

As the Myrtle Beach area’s first PGA Tour tournament nears, interest is high.

Myrtle Beach Classic organizers expect around 40,000 spectators and about 10,000 people a day to attend the tournament, which will occur May 9-12.

Myrtle Beach Classic Tournament Director Darren Nelson said the occasion has already sold more than 18,000 tickets and will probably sell 50 percent of its general admission tickets the month before the event.

The question now is who those spectators will watch tee off at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club, one of the most historic golf courses on the Grand Strand. While some might expect top-ranked golfers to participate, the Myrtle Beach Classic field will probably not feature many of those individuals.

Nelson said the golfers who finished in the final top 50 of the PGA Tour’s fall 2023 FedEx Cup rankings are not eligible to play in The Myrtle Beach Classic. That means Viktor Hovland, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy and others will probably not tee off on hole one at The Dunes Golf and Beach Club May 9, 2024.

Instead, players ranked 51 through or lower are qualified. Indeed, most who finished in the top 50 will instead play at the Wells Fargo Championship , a PGA Tour signature event in Charlotte, NC, hosted concurrently with the Myrtle Beach Classic.

As a PGA Tour signature event, the Wells Fargo Championship’s purse is $20 million, five times larger than the Myrtle Beach Classic’s total amount. It also offers 700 FedExCup points, more than double the points the Myrtle Beach Classic does, as more points help players qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs.

“The title sponsor looked at several options. They looked at a PGA Tour event; they looked at PGA Tour Champions; they looked at LPGA options,” Nelson added. “They felt like this type of event was the best fit this time for Myrtle Beach on the investment level.”

Nelson also said it was important to successfully execute the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic before looking to the future. He added that the purse could increase in the future, too.

“We’re setting the foundation,” He added. “Maybe this is a different type of event in the future.”

Nelson said he’ll know the final line-up for sure May 3, 2024.

In fact, the tournament will offer interested parties an up-close experience as part of one of their pro-ams before the tournament. Spots are still available for the May 8, 2024 version, where three amateurs play a full round of golf with two pros and attend an evening after-party.

Rory McIlroy would welcome more ‘cut-throat’ approach from PGA Tour

McIlroy has been one of the strongest advocates for the PGA and European Tours in recent years.

Rory McIlroy would welcome the PGA Tour being more “cut-throat” in an effort to improve its competitiveness.

World number two McIlroy has been one of the strongest advocates for the PGA and DP World Tours after the inception of the LIV series rocked the golf landscape.

McIlroy has softened his hardball stance on LIV in recent months after Europe Ryder Cup team-mates Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton were the latest top names to be tempted to sign up for the big-money Saudi venture.

Competing in the Arnold Palmer Invitational this week, McIlroy reflected on where the PGA Tour can get better.

“No, I mean, I’m all for making it more cut-throat, more competitive,” the Northern Irishman told reporters.

“Probably won’t be very popular for saying this, but I’m all for less players and less TOUR cards, and the best of the best.”

The PGA Tour's Cognizant Classic was dragged into a Monday finish after heavy rain disrupted the final round, where Shane Lowry fell three strokes off the pace.

Play was suspended at 12.49pm local time on Sunday (5.49pm GMT) at PGA National, 50 minutes before the final group of Lowry and England's David Skinns were due to tee off, with the final round not resuming for nearly three and a half hours.

The delay meant the final group were only able to complete five holes before play was suspended due to darkness at 6.23pm (11.23pm), with 26 players now returning on Monday morning to complete their final rounds.

What happened on Sunday?

Overnight co-leader Eckroat made back-to-back birdies from the fourth and was two under par for seven holes, moving him to 15 under and one ahead, while Van Rooyen birdied eight of his first 11 holes - including each of his first six - before returning after the delay to close a final-round 63.

How it works: DP World Tour players make push for 10 available PGA TOUR cards for 2024

How it works: DP World Tour players make push for 10 available PGA TOUR cards for 2024

Change Text Size

As part of the strategic alliance between the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour that was announced in 2022, a pathway was opened for players to procure status on the PGA TOUR with their play on the DP World Tour.

Beginning in 2023, top finishers on the DP World Tour’s season-long points list, the Race to Dubai, at season’s end earn status for the following PGA TOUR season, rewarding their excellent play with the opportunity to compete on both tours.

Ten PGA TOUR cards are available to the highest-ranked players in the final Race to Dubai standings who don’t already hold PGA TOUR status for finishing in the top 125 of the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List or above. For example, if Rory McIlroy or another player already exempt on the PGA TOUR finishes fifth in the Race to Dubai, then No. 11 in the Race to Dubai standings earns PGA TOUR status.

The top finisher in the Race to Dubai who is not already exempt on the PGA TOUR will be fully exempt for the following TOUR season, similar to players who finish in the top 125 in the FedExCup. That player also earns a spot in THE PLAYERS Championship.

The other nine DP World Tour players will start the season positioned directly above the 30 Korn Ferry Tour graduates and the top five finishers (and ties) from Q-School in the PGA TOUR Priority Ranking . These three categories will then be subject to reshuffle the Monday of the Masters Tournament and again following the Wyndham Championship. After each reshuffle, players in all three categories will be re-ranked based on their ranking in the current-season’s FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points list.

The race for the 10 PGA TOUR cards available via the Race to Dubai can be tracked here on PGATOUR.COM. Players who already have PGA TOUR status in Category 21 or above in the PGA TOUR Priority Ranking for the 2024 season are filtered out of the list. If a player earns PGA TOUR membership by finishing in the top 125 of the FedExCup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List (or earning a number of non-member FedExCup points equal to or surpassing No. 125) at season’s end, then he will not count against the 10 TOUR cards available via the Race to Dubai.

If any DP World Tour member declines PGA TOUR membership or is ineligible for PGA TOUR membership at the conclusion of the season, then the next-highest ranked player from the Race to Dubai not otherwise exempt will earn PGA TOUR status.
