[Quick Fixes] Dodge Journey Transmission Problems

Last Updated on November 23, 2023 by Robert Wilson

Dodge Journey transmission problems have been a common issue for owners since the model was first introduced.

Many have complained of issues with the six-speed automatic transmission, including hard shifting, delayed engagement, and complete failure.

While Dodge has issued a few recalls over the years to try and address the problem, it seems to be a persistent one that continues to plague owners.

If you own a 2011 Dodge Journey, you may be having problems with the transmission. In fact, there have been so many complaints about this issue that Dodge has issued a recall.

Dodge Journey Common Problems & Solutions

One of the most common problems with the Dodge Journey is that the engine may stall without warning.

This can be a serious safety issue as it can cause the vehicle to lose power while driving, increasing the risk of an accident.

Top Dodge Journey Issues!

  • The Remote Keyless Entry System May Not Work intermittently.
  • Dampness Inside the Vehicle Due to a Water Leak.
  • The Engine may Overheat Due to Debris in the Cylinder Head Coolant Port.
  • Vibration on Brake Application.
  • Whine Type Noise From the Power Steering Pump.

What are the Signs Your Transmission is Going Out?

There are many different signs that your transmission may be going out. If you notice any of the following, it’s important to have your vehicle checked by a mechanic as soon as possible:

1. Transmission Fluid Leaks : One of the most common signs of transmission trouble is a fluid leak. Transmission fluid keeps your car’s gears lubricated and cool, so if it starts leaking, it can mean big problems for your transmission. Check for red or brown fluid leaks underneath your car; if you see any, it’s time to take it in for service. 2. Burning Smell: Another sign that indicates something is wrong with your transmission is a burning smell coming from the engine area. This could indicate that the transmission fluid is overheating and beginning to break down. Once this happens, it can cause serious damage to the gears and other components inside the transmission.

3. Grinding or Shaking: When in Neutral If you notice that your car shakes or grinds when you shift into neutral, this could be a sign that the gears are worn out or damaged. This problem will only get worse over time, so it’s important to have it checked out sooner rather than later.

4. Slipping Gears: When shifting gears, do you notice that the car seems to slip out of gear or hesitates before shifting!

2017 Dodge Journey Transmission Issues Fixed!

How Much is a Transmission for a Dodge Journey?

A transmission for a Dodge Journey typically costs between $1,500 and $4,000. The cost will depend on the year, make and model. If you only need a transmission fluid flush or filter change, it will be on the lower end.

Dodge Journey Transmission Recall

Dodge is recalling certain model year vehicles manufactured from April 2010 through May 2018.

The affected vehicles may have a transmission oil cooler line that may rub against the engine block, resulting in a leak of transmission fluid. A loss of transmission fluid can result in a stall without warning and increase the risk of a crash.

Dodge Journey Reviews

The Dodge Journey has been having some transmission problems. Some people have complained about the transmission slipping and not shifting properly. There have also been some reports of the transmission making noise when it is first turned on.

2011 Dodge Journey

Tire, Wheel, Automotive design, Vehicle, Land vehicle, Car, Alloy wheel, Rim, Full-size car, Automotive wheel system,

But easily lost behind tip-of-the-spear debuts such as the all-new Grand Cherokee and Dodge Charger are foot soldiers like the Dodge Journey , which is merely overhauled. To transform the rental-fleet darling Journey, Chrysler has granted the crossover more power, a sharper chassis, and a vastly improved interior for 2011.

Priorities Inside Out

Dodge focused less on the Journey’s styling and more on its interior and chassis, a decision we support. And so the exterior changes are minimal. Up front, all models get a new grille and V-6 Journeys a square-jawed front bumper. Circular LED taillights and a revised rear bumper soften the rear end’s previous angularity, and new 19-inch wheels enter the range on higher trim levels.

 title=

Open any door, however, and the Journey is virtually unrecognizable. No longer is the cabin a hard-knock blend of Fisher-Price and ugly. Shiny plastic is as scarce inside the 2011 model as soft-touch materials were in the 2010. The cabin’s centerpiece is the new dashboard, wrapped in a low-gloss, one-piece padded panel with bezeled components, zero-gap tolerances, a new steering wheel, and classy black-on-white instruments set within Mercedes-like angled wells. Six interior color themes boldly embrace chroma and contrast like no other crossover in the class—one striking combo features ivory leather and orange stitching against black carpets—making the gray-scale misery of the previous Journey a hazy memory.

With the prior model’s most loathsome interior characteristics banished, the Journey’s innately sensible traits—the comfortably elevated seating position, standard underfloor bins in the second-row, and reasonable space for the occasional carpool in three-row form—are vastly more appreciable. Over-the-shoulder vision remains at a premium due to the Journey’s high waistline and chunky pillars, but the sightlines can be enhanced by dropping the revised second- and third-row headrests forward onto the seatbacks when they’re not in use.

An Interesting Journey

Two engines are available for 2011. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder carries over with 173 hp and 166 lb-ft of torque and is still mated to a four-speed autobox. It is the exclusive domain of the base Express trim level. The rest of the Journey lineup—Mainstreet, R/T, Crew, and Lux trims—features Chrysler’s new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, tuned for 283 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque and mated to a six-speed manumatic. All-wheel drive is an option for all but the front-wheel-drive-only Express. Our brief stint in a Journey Lux with all-wheel drive, estimated to weigh somewhere north of 4200 pounds, proved that the 2011 Journey isn’t a total slug. The V-6 has a far easier time with 4200 pounds than with, say, 5000 pounds of Dodge Durango , and we estimate the Pentastar-powered Journey should hit 60 mph in the low-seven-second range.

 title=

The squiggly, bucking coastal roads north of San Francisco provided as appropriate a venue as one could find to evaluate the Journey’s heavily reworked chassis, which benefits from revised rear-suspension geometry; larger, retuned shocks; new spring rates; new jounce bumpers; and beefier steering components. Within a few miles, we were impressed with the Journey’s composure and feedback. Our tester was shod with the top-dog 225/55-19 all-season tires, which handled our flogging with remarkably little protest. Additional credit for the planted feel goes to a partnership between the electronic all-wheel-drive and stability-control systems; they conspire to send power proactively to the rear wheels while cornering at speeds between 25 and 53 mph, roughly the same range of speeds we could safely explore on those bumpy ribbons of asphalt.

Competitive, but Will Anyone Believe It?

Within its competitive set, which includes mid-size vehicles like the Hyundai Santa Fe and larger three-row trucks like the Honda Pilot and Mazda CX-9, the Journey is aggressively priced at $22,995. The bump of $1400 over the 2010 model is more than worth it given the 2011’s newfound competence. The $24,995 Journey Mainstreet represents $2000 well spent for the stronger engine and transmission alone, although Dodge tosses in larger wheels (17 inches), dual exhaust tips, body-color mirrors, cargo area accessories, Sirius satellite radio, and more. From there, Journey prices leap to $28,995 for the R/T and $29,990 for the Crew, which are mechanically identical and laden with roughly the same smattering of creature comforts (remote start, premium audio with a hard drive, automatic climate control, and more) but delineated by specific paint schemes and 19-inch wheel designs. The Lux piles on heated leather seats, multiple parking assistants, a premium instrument cluster, and shiny chrome-clad wheels, for $33,490.

Three years after its introduction, the Journey is finally the crossover it should have been all along and is perhaps capable of bettering its last-place finish in its only comparison test . But that could be only half the battle. The other half? Since the 2011 looks so much like the 2008–10 Journey, Dodge might have to spend as much money marketing the much-improved crossover as it spent fixing it.

2011 journey transmission fluid change q&a, dodge transmission fluid change faq, how long does a transmission fluid change take for my dodge.

If the transmission fluid does need to be changed on your Dodge, the time it takes will depend on how old the vehicle is and how complicated it is to change the fluid.

For the most part, it’ll take a Dodge service center about an hour to refill your transmission’s fluid – and maybe a little longer if they’re flushing out all the old fluid and any residue or contaminants at the same time.

How often do I need to change transmission fluid on my Dodge?

Most people understand how important it is to change the engine oil and filters on their Dodge, but transmission fluid doesn’t always come to mind. The question of how often to get a transmission flush depends on a variety of factors.

• For a manual transmission, most manufacturers say you need to change the fluid every 30,000 – 60,000 miles.

  • Most people these days have an automatic transmission, and that’s trickier to understand. Some vehicles may never have their transmission fluid changed, unless there’s a leak or another problem. Other engines have a regular maintenance interval, just like engine oil or filters.

It is important to follow Dodge guidelines on transmission maintenance. If you need to have the transmission rebuilt, that can run you up to $6,000 or more.

For more about when to change your transmission fluid, read the full article

How do I know if I need to change the transmission fluid on my Dodge?

Similar to the function that oil has in your engine, transmission fluid lubricates the moving parts in the transmission. When the fluid is worn out, contaminated or missing because of a leak, you’ll start to see – or, more likely, feel – problems with the way your transmission shifts.

  • Difficulty in getting into gear or staying in gear
  • A lurching or thumping when shifting. If it’s operating properly, you probably won’t notice your transmission doing its job; if you really feel the shifts, you may have an issue.
  • A lag between pressing the accelerator and actually accelerating. A variety of different issues could cause this, but transmission issues could be one.
  • Strange noises like whining or grinding.

If you suspect an issue, the best course of action is to take your car to your local Dodge service center to get it checked out.

Why do I need to change the transmission fluid on my Dodge?

Actually, the first question is “Do I need to change my transmission fluid at all?” For the answer, consult your Dodge Owner’s Manual. Unless there’s a leak or a problem, some newer transmissions are designed to never need a fluid change.

But let’s say your car does need a transmission fluid flush as part of preventive maintenance. The top reason to change it is to keep your transmission operating at its best. Like any other fluid such as engine oil, transmission fluid becomes less effective over time. Stop-and-go driving, towing or other high-stress conditions can shorten its life even further. Unlike other fluids, however, transmission fluid doesn’t just lubricate the transmission parts, it also acts as hydraulic fluid, helping keep the transmission cooler and helping with shifts.

In a practical sense, the most important reason to perform preventive maintenance on your transmission comes down to dollars and cents: getting a transmission fluid flush might cost you a few hundred dollars, but a new transmission will cost thousands.

How do I check the transmission fluid on my Dodge?

The first thing to determine is whether you’re able to check the fluid at all. Many modern cars don’t have a transmission fluid dipstick, so the only person who can check it is a pro.

But if your car does have a dipstick, here are a few things to keep in mind.

  • First and foremost – and this is always good advice – consult your Dodge owner’s manual.
  • Park your vehicle on a flat surface.
  • Based on the owner’s manual, decide whether to check the transmission fluid with the engine on or off. Obviously, you’ll have to be a lot more careful if the engine is running.
  • Apply the parking brake for safety and make sure the vehicle is in Park.
  • Find the transmission dipstick, which is usually brightly colored and toward the back of the engine.
  • Remove the dipstick, being careful not to spill or drip any fluid. Wipe off the dipstick with a clean rag, just as you would do when checking the engine oil.
  • Reinsert the dipstick, then remove the dipstick again to check the fluid level.
  • If you need to top it off, be sure to use the recommended transmission fluid. If the fluid is particularly low, you might have a leak and should get it checked out.
  • Replace the dipstick once you verify that the transmission fluid is at the right level.

Edmunds' Expert Review

  • Family-friendly size
  • wide-opening rear doors
  • sophisticated interior with many useful features.
  • Base model's lackluster four-cylinder engine
  • limited third-row legroom
  • short on cargo space.

The 2011 Dodge Journey receives a number of significant changes, including a new, more powerful 3.6-liter V6, retuned suspension and steering, and a revamped interior featuring higher-quality materials and a new touchscreen interface.

Edmunds says

The 2011 Dodge Journey is significantly better than the model it replaces, and so now merits consideration by anyone in the market for a small-to-midsize crossover.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2011 Dodge Journey Express 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.65 per gallon for regular unleaded in California.

Vehicle overview.

Know that old expression about the journey being its own reward? Well, in the case of the 2011 Dodge Journey, we can definitively say that this new version is a lot more rewarding than the 2010 model it's replacing.

To be honest, we haven't much cared for Dodge's midsize seven-passenger crossover SUV since it debuted back for 2009. While it featured a number of clever details like multiple hidden storage bins and family-friendly wide-opening rear doors, its anemic engines, lackluster handling and low-budget interior made it difficult to recommend.

Well, that's all changed now that the folks at Dodge have given the Journey a thorough makeover that addresses those specific complaints. At the top of this list of major improvements is an all-new 283-horsepower 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 that's significantly more powerful and refined. A similar makeover has been applied to the suspension and steering, and as a result the Journey is noticeably more buttoned-down.

An even more noticeable aspect of the 2011 Journey's transformation concerns the interior. The combination of a handsome new design and soft-touch plastics gives the interior a level of sophistication that was sorely lacking in the previous version. An 8.4-inch touchscreen that dominates the dash of upper trim levels adds to the modern look and allows easy access to both audio and climate controls and cutting-edge features like the available Sirius Travel Link satellite infotainment service.

All these tweaks make this Journey a much more serious contender for a crossover SUV. The Journey's size and price also give it some niche appeal; it's larger and roomier than similarly priced small crossovers like the 2011 Honda CR-V , 2011 Kia Sorento and 2011 Toyota RAV4 , yet less expensive than most midsize and large offerings such as the 2011 Chevrolet Traverse , 2011 Ford Flex and Toyota Highlander.

That's not to say it's perfect -- the four-cylinder engine is underwhelming, for instance, and cargo capacity isn't all that impressive. Ultimately, though, we think these well-targeted improvements make test-driving the 2011 Dodge Journey a trip that's definitely worth taking.

Performance & mpg

The 2011 Dodge Journey is available with a choice of two engines. The entry-level Express model gets a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 173 hp and 166 pound-feet of torque. It drives the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. EPA fuel economy estimates are expected to be 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined.

All other Journey trim levels are powered by a 3.6-liter V6 that puts out 283 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift feature is standard, as is front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is offered as an option. Dodge estimates fuel economy at 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for front-drive and 16/24 mpg with all-wheel drive.

For 2011, the Dodge Journey is equipped with antilock disc brakes, stability control with a rollover sensor, traction control, active front head restraints, front-seat side airbags, a driver-side knee airbag and side curtain airbags for all three rows.

The Journey has not been rated using the government's new, more strenuous 2011 crash testing procedures. Its 2010 ratings (which aren't comparable to 2011 tests) were a perfect five stars in all front- and side-impact categories. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given the Journey its highest "Good" rating for both frontal-offset and side impacts.

On the road, the 2011 Dodge Journey's character depends greatly on what's under the hood. We'd suggest avoiding the four-cylinder engine that's standard on the base Express model, as it just doesn't have enough oomph to get this 4,000-pound vehicle up to speed quickly enough in common scenarios like merging onto a freeway. The new 3.6-liter V6 is a far better choice, as it produces quicker acceleration with only a slight sacrifice in fuel economy.

This year's complete redesign of the suspension and steering gear has completely transformed the driving experience. Handling feels much more confident now and the ride, while not silky-smooth, is still quite good. The steering is now much more precise and predictable, with a light but still nicely weighted feel to it.

The 2011 Dodge Journey's switch to top-quality soft-touch plastics, along with a sleek new design, projects a far more refined image. Worthy of special mention here are details like hidden storage bins and available child booster seats.

The long and wide-opening (nearly 90 degrees) rear doors make getting little ones in and out of car seats a hassle-free affair. The second row is comfortable for two good-sized adults. The third-row seat is best left for small children. With both the second and third-row seats folded down, the Journey offers 68 cubic feet of total cargo capacity -- a useful amount, although many competing models offer more.

Perhaps the most significant change for the 2011 Journey is the incorporation of the huge 8.4-inch touchscreen that dominates the dash of upper trim level models. Besides providing a slick way to access everyday controls, the screen plays a role in some of the cooler tech features offered here, including displaying the image from the rearview camera and the wide range of useful info delivered by the available Sirius Travel Link service.

2011 Dodge Journey models

The 2011 Dodge Journey is a midsize crossover offered in five trim levels: Express, Mainstreet, Crew, R/T and Lux.

The entry-level Express model comes reasonably well-equipped with a four-cylinder engine, 16-inch steel wheels, heated outside mirrors, roof rack side rails, dual-zone air-conditioning, illuminated cupholders, a 4.3-inch touchscreen interface, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control, full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a six-speaker audio system with a CD player, a USB/iPod interface and an auxiliary audio jack.

Move up to the Mainstreet trim level and you get a V6 engine, 17-inch alloy wheels, firmer suspension tuning, body-color mirrors, a rear cargo compartment cover and satellite radio. The Crew model adds 19-inch alloy wheels, foglights, tri-zone automatic climate control, a power driver seat, a fold-flat front passenger seat with built-in storage compartment, reclining 60/40-split second-row seat with fore-aft adjustment, an overhead console with conversation mirror, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, remote engine start, a 115-volt AC power outlet and a premium Infinity audio system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen and SD card slot.

The R/T model gets you all the Crew's standard features but with dual-zone climate control and distinctive interior and exterior trim. The top-of-the-line Lux adds a handful of desirable extras, including 19-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, heated front seats, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth and a Garmin-sourced navigation system.

Many of the features included on the upper trim levels can be added to the lower trim levels via optional packages. Other notable options include a sunroof, a 50/50-split third-row seat, built-in child booster seats, a navigation system and a rear-seat entertainment system.

2011 Dodge Journey review: Our expert's take

By Joe Bruzek

To the untrained eye, Dodge’s 2011 Journey may not look very different from the version that hit roads in 2008. Don’t let that fool you.

The changes that Dodge has made for 2011 (inside and out) transform the Journey from a forgettable crossover into a worthy competitor.

The Journey distinguishes itself easily among competitors with a quiet cabin and smooth ride that rival entry-level luxury cars.

Trim levels start with the Express and move up to the Mainstreet, Crew and top Lux trim level. (Don’t be alarmed; the trim names don’t make sense to us, either.) An R/T trim will be available later but few details have been announced at the time of this publishing. I tested a front-wheel-drive Mainstreet Journey. Engine options include a four- and six-cylinder, though only the Express is available with the four-cylinder. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional.

The Journey fits somewhere between the compact and midsize crossover SUV segments — it’s larger than a Honda CR-V but smaller than a Toyota Highlander. Competitors include the Kia Sorento, Mitsubishi Outlander and Toyota RAV4, which, like the Journey, have standard seating for five and optional third rows that increase capacity to seven. Compare the 2010 and 2011 Dodge Journeys here . On the Inside The Journey’s interior has been thoroughly redesigned for 2011. After seeing the new version, you’d be hard-pressed to recognize the 2010 version. Just about everything has been restyled and upholstered with soft-to-the-touch materials. The new interior has a much higher-quality feeling than the old, with significantly improved fit and finish.         The plush interior is enhanced by the ultra-comfortable front seats. I drove the 2011 Journey on a West Coast excursion from Los Angeles up to Napa Valley and back to San Francisco, for a grand total of 644 miles.   Comfort is crucial when you’re driving long distances, and even after eight-hour stints behind the wheel I could have continued driving, thanks to the supportive seat bolstering, cushy backing and cushioned armrests that kept my elbows comfortable.

Helping make the Journey a road-trip hero is its quiet interior. Dodge added sound-deadening material to improve resistance to noise, vibration and harshness, and it works. Road and wind noise are at levels I’d expect in a luxury car, not in an SUV that starts at $22,245.

The Journey’s optional backup camera is well worth the money. Our tester didn’t have one, and its belt line and small rear window don’t offer much rear visibility. I had to ask passengers to get out and spot me while parking, because I didn’t have a clue how close I was to filing an insurance claim. A backup camera can be optioned but requires the Safe and Sound Group for $1,395 plus Popular Equipment Group for $1,295 on the Mainstreet trim I tested. The camera’s image is displayed on the 8.4-inch screen that comes with the Safe and Sound package. A backup camera is standard on the most expensive Lux model but not available on the base Express.

The Journey’s interior may be a home run, but the exterior seems a little outdated, despite getting a few tweaks for 2011. Not helping were the refrigerator white paint and uninteresting five-spoke wheels. The outside doesn’t scream “look at me” or have any feeling of uniqueness. It was easy to glance past the Journey in parking lots.

Early production models will look like the one I drove, but most later models will come with different front and rear styling that help give the Journey a more aggressive look. A Dodge representative says all models except the Express will have this styling starting in late February. It offers a more interesting look, with a gaping lower front bumper and matching rear bumper, but even then I don’t think it musters the same excitement as do crossovers such as Kia’s Sorento and Sportage.

Yes, styling is subjective, but it’s not unheard of for someone to dismiss a car that I’m trying to recommend because they don’t like the way it looks. The Ford Flex and Infiniti QX56 are both highly recommendable, but friends, family and colleagues are often instantly put off by their polarizing looks.

UConnect Touch = UShould Try

If you have a massive music library on your MP3 player or if you just like having something flashy to show off, the optional 8.4-inch touch-screen and Alpine stereo package are worth a look. Called UConnect Touch 8.4, the $995 option is a drastic departure from the small screen and weak MP3 integration offered in the old Journey.

Controlling my 80-gigabyte iPod Classic in the Journey was almost as intuitive as using the iPod itself. Even better than my iPod was the massive 8.4-inch screen that displays album covers, title listings, composers and any other available info all at once. The touch-screen responds quickly, but it doesn’t include navigation or a backup camera in the package I tested; navigation is available in other UConnect systems, however. Also, the screen isn’t hidden or shrouded very well, so on a bright day it can be hard to see.

Ride & Handling

Driving the Journey up scenic U.S. Highway 1 from Los Angeles to Monterey, Calif., provided plenty of winding roads and exhilarating elevation changes. Changes to the suspension and steering for 2011 make the Journey’s ride surprisingly competent on these roads. It’s not a dedicated canyon-carver, but for a crossover/SUV aimed at families, the Journey resists body roll well and somehow isn’t horribly boring to drive.

During casual highway and city driving, the Journey feels planted and taut, with no signs of rattles or thumps over harsh roads. The steering doesn’t require much effort, yet manages to feel crisp and connected to the front wheels. Driving the Journey on the highway all day was a pleasure because of its soft and quiet ride. Few SUVs in this price range can match that.

Under the Hood

The Journey’s V-6 is a potent power plant, and in the right situations it makes the Journey feel downright quick. It’s Chrysler’s new 283-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6, and it goes in all Journey trims except the base Express, which uses a 173-hp four-cylinder engine.

The V-6 seems to make most of its power above 3,800 rpm, where a surge of acceleration comes on strong. Anytime I was out of that range, or the transmission decided it didn’t want to downshift, the car felt sluggish. That could, however, be due to the fact that I was driving a pre-production model with preliminary transmission programming. If you’re out on a test drive, definitely pay attention to see if it’s an issue.

Official EPA ratings for the front-wheel-drive V-6 are 17/25 mpg city/highway, 20 mpg combined. I averaged 20.01 mpg over 644 miles, including many miles on Highway 1 mountainsides as well as navigating up and down San Francisco’s hilly streets.

The Journey’s V-6 handled steep roads easily, only requiring a light touch of the accelerator to climb hills. For seemingly not having a whole bunch of power at lower engine rpm, the Journey’s performance in that setting was flawless.

The V-6 doesn’t suffer a huge mileage penalty versus the four-cylinder, which is rated 19/25 mpg, but neither engine’s ratings are particularly impressive. The RAV4 V-6 is rated slightly higher, at 19/27 mpg with front-wheel drive, and the V-6 Kia Sorento with front-wheel drive manages 20/26 mpg.

Safety & Reliability

The 2011 Journey earns the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick designation. It scored the highest rating, Good, in front, side, rear and roof-strength tests and comes with a standard electronic stability system.

As of publication, the Journey has not been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration using that agency’s new crash-test procedure. A full list of standard safety features can be found here .

The Journey hasn’t been known for its stellar reliability ratings. When it debuted as a 2009 model, Consumer Reports’ reader surveys rated it Much Worse than Average, their lowest rating. The 2010 improved on that, with an Average score. There won’t be any reliability data from CR on the 2011 until it’s in owners’ hands, but it expects reliability of new models to be 84 percent below average.

See the Journey’s warranty terms here .

Journey in the Market

There’s no questioning the 2011 Journey is a significant improvement over the previous model, and that in many ways it’s now ready to compete with the segment’s best. The biggest hurdle left is its bland exterior — which is somewhat misleading, given that what’s inside has the quietness and quality not commonly found among competitors in this price range.

As much as I wish people were willing to look past boring or ugly cars that are great on the inside, looks are a first impression that isn’t easily overcome.

New ITU case study maps the Moscow ‘smart city’ journey

New ITU case study maps the Moscow ‘smart city’ journey featured image

Moscow reports experience with Key Performance Indicators for Smart Sustainable Cities

A new ITU case study offers an evaluation of Moscow’s progress in meeting the objectives of its ‘smart city’ strategies and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The case study ,  Implementing ITU-T International Standards to Shape Smart Sustainable Cities: The Case of Moscow , was undertaken using the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Smart Sustainable Cities developed by the  United for Smart Sustainable Cities (U4SSC) initiativ e .

The ITU case study traces Moscow’s smart city journey from its origins in Moscow’s  Information City  strategy launched in 2011 to its successor the  Smart Moscow 2030  strategy. It highlights the role of Moscow’s Government in coordinating the implementation of a wide array of smart city projects in the city and how these projects have substantially improved the quality of life for city residents. The report assesses Moscow’s smart city performance using U4SSC indicators that measure impact on three dimensions: the economy, environment and society & culture.

Information and communication technology (ICT) is a recognized key contributor to the Moscow economy. Building on its strengths and maintaining ICTs as a strategic lever, Moscow has adopted vibrant policies for ICT development and proliferation. These aspects are clearly reflected in the good performance by Moscow, as presented in the report, within the sub-dimensions of “ICT” and “Productivity”.

The case study also serves as a valuable reference point to other cities in Russia and Commonwealth of Independent State countries – as well as to cities around the world pursuing greater efficiency and sustainability. ITU standardization experts responsible for the refinement of the Key Performance Indicators will also find the case study to be valuable.

“Home to more than 12 million people, Moscow is the largest urban area on the European continent,” said ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao. “Considering the size of Moscow and its population, this case study offers a unique set of lessons learned for other cities around the world developing a ‘smart city’ strategy. I commend Moscow’s leaders for their efforts to share these experiences and this knowledge with the international community, towards creating a ‘smart’ world for everyone, everywhere.”

“Moscow has made a rapid smart city journey from 2011 and we are keen on keeping up with the pace. No matter whether it is Moscow, Singapore or Barcelona – every city has the same task to make their residents’ lives enjoyable, safe and comfortable,” said Strategy and Innovations Advisor to the Chief Information Officer of Moscow, Andrey Belozerov. “We are happy to contribute to this research as it is important to develop universal metrics to access city performances all around the world.”

The findings of the case study will feed into the work of ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T)  Study Group 20 , the expert group leading the development of ITU standards for the Internet of Things and smart cities. These standards assist in optimizing the application of ICTs within smart cities, in addition to supporting efficient data processing and management.

The findings will also be taken up by the U4SSC initiative, which advocates for public policy to ensure that ICTs, and ICT standards in particular, play a definitive role in the transition to Smart Sustainable Cities. U4SSC also promotes the adoption of international standards in reaching the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the reporting of associated experiences.

The Moscow case study follows prior smart city case studies of Dubai and Singapore. These have made valuable smart cities experiences and knowledge available to other cities around the world. This reporting also solicits feedback that helps cities to refine their smart city strategies.

U4SSC has developed a  ‘Collection methodology for the Key Performance Indicators for Smart Sustainable Cities’  to guide cities in their collection of core data and information necessary to assess  their progress in becoming a Smart Sustainable City. It is supported by 16 United Nations bodies, including ITU, and is open to the participation of all stakeholders interested in driving smart city innovation.

The collaboration encouraged by U4SSC has led more than 50 cities to measure their smart city strategies using the U4SSC’s KPIs for Smart Sustainable Cities, which are based on the ITU international standard,  ITU Y.4903/L.1603 “Key Performance Indicators for Smart Sustainable Cities to assess the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals” .

This ITU News story was originally distributed as an ITU press release. For more ITU press releases, see the  ITU Media Centre .
