The 11 Best Cruise Lines for Adults

By Janice Wald Henderson

These Are the Best Cruise Lines for Adults in 2024

The world's best cruise lines for adults have one major perk in common: the child-free utopia passengers are afforded while sailing. Daydreaming on deck , leisurely romantic dinners, dancing into the wee hours, popping champagne, and even getting tatted—such unabashed joys have everything to do with being grownup and nothing to do with kids.

The best adult cruises allow passengers to pursue relaxation, rejuvenation, and indulgence, undisturbed by tantrum-minded toddlers and other children potentially ruining your me-time groove. For when it's time to sail away from the stresses of life on land, we've pulled together the very best cruise lines for adults, plus their most exciting itineraries available for booking in 2024 and early 2025.

Note that while some of these lines are strictly adults-only, others are adults-oriented, meaning that they may have some well-behaved older children on board during school holidays but otherwise, rarely do. Most are small ship experiences with geared-to-grownup itineraries spanning the globe and leaning into all-inclusiveness and luxury—all the better to admire when it’s all about you.

Cruise liners in Malta doubled in the first three months of 2017

Aqra bil- Malti

Cruise liners who visited to Malta in the first three months of this year have doubled reaching the number of 34 cruise liners. Figures published by the National Statistics Office show that between January and March more than 85,000 cruise passengers arrived in Malta, an increase of almost 46,000 tourist over the same three months of 2016.

The Valletta Cruise Port is expecting another record year of cruise passengers as the tourist cruise travel season will reach its peak in the coming six months. It is estimated that by the end of the year around 700,000 cruise liners tourists will visit Malta, leaving an estimated more than €100 million in the economy.

Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis said that the majority of tourists arriving in Malta by cruise liners are not included in the tourism statistics as they do not spend a night in Malta. In fact from the 85,000 passengers who arrived in the first three months, 344 only spent a night in Malta. Dr Zammit Lewis said that the number is expected to increase after two cruise liners decided to make Malta their home port.

“The cruise liner behind me is the P&0 which does homeporting, that is it starts its voyage from Malta and ends it in Malta, and therefore it gives an incentive to the tourist to visit Malta for a holiday and then board a cruise liner”.

With the good prospects looming ahead for the industry, Valletta Cruise Port chairman Joe Zammit Tabona said that the company will continue to invest so that by the end of the year it will increase moorings for large cruise liners.

“Therefore we planned the extension of Pinto 4 and 5, an investment of €6 million, and we are talking with the Government to see how this can be done in partnership”, Mr Zammit Tabone said.

The biggest world port company which invested in the Valletta Cruise Port, Mr Zammit Tabona added, is looking at Malta as a model for the development of similar ports.

“This is the best harbour and therefore we had Stephen Xuereb, our CEO who was appointed as the COO of the Global Port Holdings; what they are trying to do is the replicate what we have done here”.

He also said that the Valletta Cruise Port is having talks with other foreign companies to attract more cruise liners to Malta.
