19 thoughts on “2 Day Madurai Itinerary – 17 Best Places To Visit In Madurai”

Best time to visit Madurai? I heard a lot about Madurai and know it because of the Meenakshi temple. I am willing to explore Madurai.

Madurai is so beautiful. I heard about Meenakshi temple but here it is a lot more to visit. Winter must be the best time to visit? Madurai has all religions holy places, everyone heart met at the place. Temples sculptures and architecture are so breathtaking.

Since childhood, I am mystified by the idea of visiting and exploring Madurai after seeing a DD National TV show. Thanks for enlisting the places to visit in Madurai.

Temple, church , dargah all three you have covered & that’s so nice. Also that waterfall is beautiful. The itinerary will be very helpful for travellers to explore it in 2 day time.

I didn’t know that there is so much to explore in Madurai. I only knew about Meenakshi temple but looks like this place has a lot more.

Meenakshi Mandir has been on my bucket list for many years now. Somehow I’m yet to receive a calling. However I did not have any idea there are so many other things to do here. Hope to visit Tamil Nadu soon.

To be honest, I only knew that Meenakshi temple is the main place to explore in Madurai. From your post, I have come to know about other places to visit here. What will be the best time, October or February?

I visited Madurai recently. And I visited only the main Meenakshi Temple. I didn’t realise Madurai had so many things to do. Will save this for next time.

Also, love the way you have covered a range of things to do. From temples to waterfalls, Madurai seems to have everything. Thanks for all the recommendations.

Madurai is so rich in heritage! Earlier I knew only about Meenakshi temple. But now reading this guide, I have decided to allot two whole days to Madurai on our next trip.

Madurai has a lot of tourist places which also include religious places. One day isn’t enough to explore around. Thank you for the detailed itinerary.

Thank you for sharing this with me I have to visit Madurai and this detailed post and place to Visit with distance would be really helpful

Madurai to me always meant Meenakshi Amman temple. Thanks to you, I now know that it has several other temples, mosques, church and even caves with Jain inscriptions. Good read!

Meenakshi temple is one of the most beautiful temples down south and no doubt it looks wonderful in person. The place with the beachy vibes is a wonderful place to visit with family. and your post is in such great detail about the place, very helpful

OMG! You’ve covered almost everything in Madurai. I’ve pinned your post for ready reference when I visit the beautiful city:

I am one of the travellers who would visit Madurai only for the sake of Meenakshi Temple. This temple itself has so many things to know about from religious, historical and architectural points.

Madurai is a great place and your post comes at the perfect time for me. We are planning a madurai trip and I have noted down all the places for our upcoming trip.

I have been to madurai when I was very young, the only place I remember is beautiful madurai temple. You have shared such an exhaustive list with so much of detailing that I would love to revisit this place again.

My roommate in the hostel was from Madurai and I have heard a lot about the beauty and the temples over there. I will add this place in my travel wishlist.

Tamil Nadu Tourism

madurai tourism department

Tourism in Tamil Nadu is managed by the Tourism Department in the Secretariat. The Commissionerate of Tourism formulates policies and implements programmes for the development of the tourism sector in the state. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) is a state-owned public-sector undertaking which generates innovative schemes and develops tourism infrastructure. The Tamil Nadu Tourism coordinates with government departments/agencies and private companies for the development of tourism in the state.  The cradle of ancient Dravidian culture, Tamil Nadu extends from the Coromandel Coast in the east to the Western Ghats in the west. It is the homeland of one of humanity’s living classical civilizations, that has continued to thrive uninterruptedly for two millennia. The tradition is very much alive even today in Tamil language, dance, poetry and Hindu religion. All round the year there are festivals and fairs, adding colour and liveliness to the atmosphere. Long, sandy and sunny beaches give you the perfect picnic spots that you can wish for. The enchanting, natural beauty will leave you speechless. It is home to rich sanctuaries, thick forests, tall mountains, soothing hill stations and gushing waterfalls.  At the heart of the state is the fertile Kaveri valley, which is home to numerous rice fields and spectacular temples. This region is the site of ancient Cholamandalam, where the Chola kings built magnificent temples at Thanjavur and nearby areas. Great temples can also be seen at Madurai and Chidambaram, which witnessed an efflorescence of dance, music and literature under their rulers. Now a World Heritage Site, the 7th century port city of Mamallapuram is home to spectacular rock-cut temples. The former French enclave of Puducherry and British forts and churches reflect Tamil Nadu’s colonial legacy. Many towns in the state have the prefix Tiru, which means “sacred,” and the name indicates the presence of a major religious site. The people of Tamil Nadu are traditionally hospitable and humble. Tourists will feel at home wherever they go.

Madurai

A glimpse into one of the oldest inhabited cities of the world

A glimpse into one of the oldest inhabited cities of the world

Madurai is known as the ‘Lotus City of India’. The bustling city is situated in the state of Tamil Nadu. Also known as the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu, the city is known for its numerous temples and places of religious sanctity indeed. Why do you think it is called the ‘Lotus City of India?’ It was planned and built taking the shape of a lotus indeed. Madurai is known for its world-famous Meenakshi Amman Temple.

Thousands of pilgrims across the world flock to the temple to invoke the blessings of the Goddess. The architectural splendor of the temple also lends devotees to a breathtaking experience. You get fluffy idlis, hot vadas, and a drink known as Jigar Thanda across street outlets of the city. Likewise, Madurai tourist places, look astounding and blissful. Come on, let us explore the intricate aspects the city of Madurai offers its tourists on the whole:

This is one of the oldest cities that was continuously inhabited in India. This was the city that was ruled by the brave Pandya kings across centuries. Or at least over the longest time in the history of the city's inception. You, therefore, have the city known for its cultural diversity while maintaining the traditional roots intact. Take architectural majesty, cultural traditions, woven and intricate customs, handicrafts, folk dances, songs, festivals, and ceremonies. The city has it all. The Madurai tourism department showcases all of its culturally rich aspects vividly and vibrantly.

On the other hand, you also discover a cosmopolitan touch, the city has in its whim. You find companies of technological advancements opening their shops within the city premises. You have broad roads with lined-up shops that sell desi and international brands. Madurai is one of the fastest-growing commercial hubs across Southern India. While the people of Madurai follow the latest technology, they still ingrain roots of traditionality . Tamil is the main language spoken here. Most of them follow Hinduism. While Christians, Muslims, and Jains live in equal harmony with one another.

The city has rich cultural roots attached to its acclaim. You have the city taking the shape of a lotus. Again, the city was properly built across the banks of the Vaigai River. As early as the 3rd Century BC, the city was ruled by the Pandya Kings. Trade and commerce flourished during this point in time. Up until the 10 Century AD, the city was ruled by the Pandya dynasty generation after generation. The city then came under the influence of Chola Kings. The great epic ‘Silapathigaram’ was written in Tamil literature. The epic is based on the story of Kannagi who attempted to burn Madurai as revenge for the injustice that was meted out to her husband Kovalan.

During the 13th Century, however, the city came under the influence of the Mughal Empire. In 1371, the Vijayanagar dynasty invaded the empire of Madurai. It was Thirumalai Nayagar who pioneered the growth of the city magnificently indeed. He was instrumental in the construction of buildings, temples, and places of a historical caricature. In 1781, the city came under the influence of the British Raj. We eventually achieved our independence from colonial rule on the 15th of August 1947. This way, you get a brief list of the historical significance the place has to offer.

The Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple is located across the southern banks of the famous Vaigai River. The architectural splendor of the temple can leave you with a breath-taking experience indeed. This was a temple that was built between 1623 and 1655. The palatial premises of the temple, therefore, invoke worldwide acclaim indeed. The temple is primarily dedicated to the worship of Goddess Meenakshi, i.e. Parvati along with her spouse Lord Shiva. The temple complex has been built in accordance with the Shilpa Shastra. Hence, the Madurai tourism department showcases a palace in honor of the emperor. Again, this is one of the popular tourist places near Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple indeed. The palace was constructed during the year 1636 AD in the city of Madurai. This was done by Emperor Thirumalai Nayak himself. You can also discover the intricate aspects of the Nayak dynasty while you glimpse through the interiors of the palace façade.

Amid the beautiful Madurai tourist places, this hub is something you truly cannot miss out on. The Vaigai Dam is a serene and scenic location that is built across the River Vaigai. Amid Madurai tourist places, Gandhi Museum is a hub that can invoke the historical nostalgia in you as such. The Museum was established in the year 1959 in memory of our beloved Father of the Nation. Located in the heart of Madurai , the museum showcases some of the artifacts Gandhi had used during his lifetime. You can also discover the blood-stained cloth was that was donned by Gandhi while he was assassinated during the year 1948.

The architectural splendor of the temple is a mind-blowing one indeed. The temple has been constructed using the Dravidian architectural style indeed. The temple was built by the Pandya kings. Koodal Azhagar is the name given to Vishnu while Goddess Lakshmi is referred to as Mathuravalli. The temple is built with a palatial gopuram along with a beautiful vimanam. This is a must-visit tourist hub indeed.

Mariamman theppakulam

The pilgrimage hub is constructed in the honor of Lord Vigneswaran. This divine temple is just 5 km from the exquisite Meenakshi Amman Temple. You discover a huge tank within the temple premises where water is filled into. The tank or what is called the Pakula is filled to the brim with water, the entire year along. Several pilgrims take their holy dips before entering the premises of the temple. Again, the Madurai tourist places guide holds the temple on a special prominence indeed. Several festivals are conducted via the temple premises year after year. These festivals and rituals are honored by the pilgrims or devotees with pomp and splendor indeed.

Pazhamudhir Solai

This is yet another picturesque spot in Madurai. You have a beautiful temple that is dedicated to the worship of Lord Subramanya. The exquisite temple is designed using the finest variety of wood and marble. Hence the architectural view of the temple evokes an aesthetic feel for tourists or vacationers who plan to pay a visit to the holy temple. You find giant steps on the front side of the temple. It is located on the hills of Azhagar Koil. There is also a fond belief amongst devotees who come here. They believe that their wishes will come true the moment they step on to the peripheral of the temple vicinity. The Madurai tourism team , therefore, places special importance on the maintenance and upkeep of the temple premises.
