Heritage Tours Handcrafted According To Your Ancestry

Have you ever wondered what life was like in the land of your ancestors? How remote was their cottage in Ireland ? What did they eat in their Sicilian village? What did they see through their windows when they woke to a morning in Vietnam or Spain or Croatia ? How did a world you’ve never seen influence the person you are today?

Let your family tree inspire your next vacation with help from Classic Journeys. Whether you think of it as a heritage tour, a DNA tour or ancestral tourism, exploring the land of your roots adds an engaging extra dimension to your travels. Even if you don’t have specifics about the where and when of your family’s origins, you’ll still feel a connectedness like never before.

Brings your ancestral heritage to life with our culture-rich itineraries.

Each itinerary is handcrafted to bring travelers into close personal contact with a region’s people and culture. Your full-time local guides know the farmers, the craftspeople, the everyday folk who live modern lives that strongly echo tradition and history. You’ll gain eye-opening insights into the events that spurred emigration. And it’s not unusual to encounter a dish that reminds you of the one Grandma used to serve on Sunday or a legend that sounds a lot like the one you were told as a bedtime story.

Take a look at our scheduled trips now or simply send us your 23andMe, Ancestry.com, or other DNA results and we’ll contact you with more information on the regions that match your ancestry!

Or let us create a private heritage tour to your family’s ground zero.

If you’re lucky enough to have detailed genealogical knowledge, we’ll curate a private trip that can take you to the very town, maybe even the exact street, where it all started. You can ask us to adapt one of our published itineraries or to create one from scratch for the ultimate in personal discovery. To find out more about a private heritage trip , call us at 800.200.3887 . If you need help researching your genealogy, connect with expert genealogists to discover the details of your ancestors’ life before you go.

Included in your heritage walking tour are luxury accommodations with our signature invisible check-in, transportation around your destination, a knowledgeable local guide, entry to attractions, national parks, etc as well as the meals that are indicated on your trip itinerary.

What our travelers say about their Heritage tours

Faqs about heritage tours.

Heritage Tours are exclusive trips designed to help travelers like you discover your family story. These Heritage Tours were created in collaboration with Ancestry®, the global leader in family history and consumer genomics. Ancestry® harnesses the information found in family trees, historical records, and DNA to help people gain a new level of understanding about their lives.

Wondering how to plan a family heritage research trip? Or how to find out more about your family tree? These guided genealogy tours in Europe are for you.

On all Go Ahead Tours, the details are handled—and these genealogy trips are no exception. Every tour includes an expert Tour Director, sightseeing tours with local guides, breakfast daily, select lunches and dinners, private transportation, and handpicked hotels. Itineraries are carefully planned to offer you a balance of planned activities and free time for you to explore on your own.

Plus, there are a few benefits that are exclusive to our Heritage Tours.

  • As part of your tour package, you’ll receive an AncestryDNA® kit within one month of booking your trip. The DNA test is easy to take—and the sooner you complete it, the sooner you'll receive your results!
  • Set goals in advance with help from an AncestryProGenealogists® expert . Prior to your tour, we will contact you to schedule your 5-hour pre-trip family history review.
  • A genealogist from AncestryProgenealogists® will accompany your group and provide unique insight throughout the entire trip. This professional genealogist specializes in the history of your destination and will paint a picture of what life was like for your ancestors, plus answer questions about your heritage.

Heritage travel is a perfect fit for you if you're looking for a new way to trace your ancestry. Currently, our Heritage Tours visit Ireland, Scotland, Germany, and Italy.

Ancestry® offers customized ancestral home visits during and after the main trip for an additional cost. With these, one of the AncestryProGenealogists® staff will accompany you to the exact town or village in Italy where your own specific ancestors lived. If you’re interested in an ancestral home visit, ask about organizing one during your pre-trip family history review.

DNA travel has been growing in popularity as many people are interested in traveling to the places their ancestors are from. If you're interested in finding out more about your family tree, a Heritage Tour is a way to do that with the help of experts.

A professional genealogist can help you piece together aspects of your family history. After gathering information on your own by talking to relatives and looking through family records, the next step is to take an AncestryDNA® test to see your results. From there, a genealogist from AncestryProGenealogists® can be a resource to help you continue your research both at home and in the destination you visit on tour.

One piece of family history research advice from Kyle Betit, Senior Genealogist and Research Manager at AncestryProGenealogists®? "No matter how much you research online or how many records you look at, ultimately there is no replacement for going there to walk where your family walked, and see how and where they lived, worked, worshipped, and studied."

How about a meaningful get-away? Pack your travel bags. We at “Heritage Tours” are ready and waiting!

India is a treasure trove of culture, developed over thousands of years and manifested in the form of arts, works of literature, customs, traditions, linguistic expressions, artifacts, heritage sites, and more. It is this cultural and natural wealth that truly makes India, “Incredible India”, as per India’s tourism slogan. The Policy recognizes that the knowledge of the rich diversity of India should be imbibed first hand by learners. This would mean including simple activities, like touring by students to different parts of the country, which will not only give a boost to tourism but will also lead to an understanding and appreciation of diversity, culture, traditions, and knowledge of different parts of India. Towards this direction under ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’, 100 tourist destinations in the country will be identified where educational institutions will send students to study these destinations and their history, scientific contributions, traditions, indigenous literature, and knowledge, etc., as a part of augmenting their knowledge about these areas. Children should be given periodic exposure to activities outside school through visits to places/monuments of historical, cultural, and tourist importance.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

heritage tours in

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

Traveler Reviews

I cant recommend this tour highly enough. I asked a friend to recommend one thing to do with limited time in Moscow and he said, check out the metro. I did one better, and went on this individual tour yesterday with my very well informed guide, Alina. She took me to a number of stations and explained the history, politics and meanings behind the different sculpures and artworks in a way that made the whole experience far more meaningful than getting on and off the metro without guidance would have done. I had a really fantastic time and was thoroughly impressed. To top it all off, we had lunch and Alina suggested some great things for me to do, even whatsapping me maps, suggestions, and internet links. Today she followed up by messaging me to ask how my day was going and if I had any questions about the city, or recommendations for places to eat, etc. A great tour, a lovely guide and a fantastic experience. I couldnt recommend this tour, or Alina, any more highly. Fantastic!

Dear Friends,

My son and myself visited Moscow for a holiday in April 2018. And we had selected this fantastic tour. Our Guide Mrs. Julia came sharp at 10.00 AM even though she was not feeling well and had sore throat. Thereafter she took us to many Metro stations. Though I had already visited Moscow last year and seen all these stations, she gave phenomenal historic background and many interesting facts. She was almost fluent in English and and a good knowledge of Russian Culture, food and many other things. Overall we enjoyed thoroughly and I will highly recommend this tour with Julia if possible. Truly amazing person. And even more amazing tour.

Our Tour booked for 26 December 2017 was absolutely amazing. Our guide Julia picked us up from our Hotel in St Peterburg on time in a luxury minivan. Thanks to Julia we were able to see most of the tourist attractions that day. She went out of her way for us to make our day special. She had a vast knowledge of all the places that we visited. Lunch was special in a typical Russian restaurant with food from the region. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Picked up in the hotel lobby by our guide, Lylie, who then walked us to the closest Metro. She walked/trained us to 13 different stations and then explained the history of the metro and the significance of the decor in each station. We had plenty of time to photo, view the decor, watch and ride the trains and observe the people coming and going with their daily affairs. The art work/mosaics/sculptures/stained glass/ marble all had a role to play in presenting the history of communist Russia. The Russian metro well deserves the title of the most interesting and outstanding metro in the world. Lylie then took us to lunch, advised us on menu choices and their significance in the Russian culture and was very happy answering our questions on how the younger generation is responding to the new Russia. We had an outstanding guide, a fantastic experience and would highly recommend this tour over and above other tours which merely include a visit to a small number of stations. Lesley and David - Sydney

Great guide! She explained everything and took me to all the important stations. She knew her stuff! Worth it!

Our guide ,Dacha, was charming and very informative. We took the 2 hour tour and saw what Dacha thought were the most beautiful and interesting metro stations. The Metro is certainly worthy of its museum status and we were glad to have some of the designs and features explained to us.
