2023 February Featured Organization of the Month: Visit Buffalo Niagara

visit buffalo niagara board

What kind of place is Buffalo, NY? It’s fun, historical, delicious, outdoorsy, sports-loving, diverse, and creative. It’s home to remarkable art and music and architecture. And did we mention it’s an easy, welcoming, and affordable place to visit? If this sounds unexpectedly great, that’s because that’s exactly what Buffalo is.

Visit Buffalo Niagara was incorporated on March 4, 1987 and is governed by a Board of Directors responsible for the administration and operation of the organization. VBN employs a staff of talented tourism professionals dedicated to promoting tourism and accomplishes this by soliciting national, state and regional meeting planners, motor coach tour operators, travel agents and independent consumers. In 2017, $1.8 billion dollars in traveler spending occurred in Erie County, generating $221 million in tax revenue. That’s $578 in tax savings per household in Erie County.

1. ) What is your destination most known for?

Buffalo is known for its architecture, its place on the Erie Canal and the wealth and innovation that built this city into a modern, cultural, and a music, art and garden-filled, destination. Those Gilded Age bones, intact, restored and now full of new life, are one of the great surprises waiting for visitors to discover: Walk through the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, set to re-open in May, with a new glass addition, green space and a spacious and sparkling presentation of our world class collection of modern and contemporary art spearheaded in the 1960s by an heir to the Woolworth fortune. Listen to poetry readings and concerts inside the old grain silos at Silo City, a collection of waterfront buildings left over from roasting malt for beer and now with a tavern, outdoor performance space and grounds with sculpture projects, including a new labyrinth, by architecture students and artists. Kayak, sail, have a beer in a tiki boat at Canalside and RiverWorks park and entertainment spots along the Buffalo River where the waterfront has come back to life with walking trails, sunset views, a restored merry-go-round, a kids museum, silo climbing wall, ziplining … Frederick Law Olmsted designed our park system which has bike paths, an outdoor stage for the summer Shakespeare in the Park plays, a lake with flamingo paddleboats and a terrace restaurant making craft cocktails and great shrimp and grits inside a repurposed boathouse.

2.) During this time, how can we enjoy your destination?

Tour the city with stops on the Underground Railroad like the Michigan Street Baptist Church and, after an in-the-works renovation, have a beer at the Colored Musicians Club jazz bar where Billie Holiday, Miles Davis and John Coltrane hung out and played. Take in design gems, houses and a concert hall, with great stories, by Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, H.H. Richardson and Eliel and Eero Saarinen. Sample our craft brews – from beer, hard cider and seltzer to barrel-aged Polish krupnik honey liqueur. Dine on the delicacy that helped make us famous: Sample classic chicken wings along with vegetarian permutations, like my personal favorite: Café 59’s crispy polenta wings … Stop in the Downtown Bazaar food court, one place to feast on the foods from new immigrants. People from Burma, the Sudan, Ethiopia, Ghana, Bangladesh and Yemen have added new vibrancy to Buffalo.

3.) What hidden gem should not be missed when visiting your destination?

The Richardson Hotel, a newly reopening luxury property within an 1870 H.H. Richardson building with grounds by Frederick Law Olmsted. All of it was designed as a holistic mental health asylum to heal with open airy, light filled and bucolic spaces. There’s a restaurant, bar and 88 rooms in this restorative spot at the edge of the Elmwood Village neighborhood. It’s just a walk to the AKG Art Museum and the Burchfield Penney Art Center, which focuses on regional art and the transcendent watercolors of Charles Burchfield that seem to “hum with light and movement.”

4.) What’s one feature that can’t be missed when visiting your website?

Our Neighborhoods page is the best way to research Buffalo, find unique stories and get a sense of our community before you arrive: https://www.visitbuffaloniagara.com/neighborhoods/

5.) How did you hear about NATJA, why did you join?

As a former newspaper reporter, college teacher and university communications staffer, the tourism industry is new to me. I am eager to learn all I can. A colleague recommended NATJA and it seemed like a terrific opportunity.

6.) Is there anything else you feel travel media should know about your destination?

This city and region embody the Visit Buffalo Niagara mission: Delighting people with the unexpected and the travel highlights that can seem hidden. Buffalonians love welcoming visitors and showing off local secrets that are off-the-beaten path: favorite spots where great memories of discovery, people, history, culture, food, outdoor exploration, waterfront and in-the-lake fun are waiting for you. Drop me an email. Let me know how I can help design a trip here …

Your Trip to Buffalo: The Complete Guide

Buffalo is the second-largest city in New York State by population, and a diverse city in Western New York State that has so much to offer travelers, from iconic 20th-century architecture to a thriving waterfront to heart-pumping activities, as well as a diverse food and drink scene. And while summer is ideal for enjoying the city’s parks and rivers, winter sees locals ice-skating and playing ice sports like hockey and curling.

The Erie Canal, Buffalo River, and Lake Erie are the three bodies of water around the city and their waterfronts are highlights of the Queen City.

Buffalo has a diverse lineup of neighborhoods worth checking out, like charming Elmwood Village, bustling downtown, artsy Allentown, hip Hertel Avenue, diverse Five Points, and Michigan and Jefferson Avenues, the crossroads of African American heritage in Queen City. Buffalo is an exciting city to explore, especially if you’re an art lover, foodie, or sports enthusiast. And, of course, it’s the gateway to Niagara Falls, one of the U.S.’s premier attractions.

You can’t visit Buffalo without experiencing the famous Erie Canal and its iconic grain elevators, the city's art and design scene, tailgating at hockey and football games, and winter activities like ice skating and hockey.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit: Buffalo has something to offer year-round, but it’s important to be aware that it gets very cold in winter, with snow a guarantee. In fact, the city has receives record-setting snowfalls on several occasions. Buffalonians don’t bat an eye, though, indulging in ice-skating, sledding, curling, and other winter sports—including inventive activities like ice bicycles and ice bumper cars. Even Niagara Falls is a sight worth seeing in winter. Spring and fall are excellent times to visit, with fewer visitors than summer and pleasant weather perfect for exploring the city and Niagara Falls without the crowds.  Summer is high season in Buffalo, and the riverfronts come alive with live music, fitness classes, and festivals. Museums, parks, restaurants, and other attractions are more crowded, and Niagara Falls will be packed. Hotel, car rental, and flight prices will be at their peak during the summer months. Early September brings the National Buffalo Wing Festival.

Language:  English.

Currency:  U.S. dollars.

Getting Around:  It’s best to get around by car in Buffalo, whether it’s your own or a taxi, Uber, or Lyft. There is a small public transportation system, though, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority , which runs one train line that runs from the University of Buffalo to the First Niagara Center, where the Buffalo Sabres hockey team plays. The NFTA also runs an extensive number of buses on dozens of routes, and you can use the same tickets on both. Check schedules carefully for run times.

Travel Tip:  While using Buffalo as a base for a visit to Niagara Falls is a fine reason to visit the city, Buffalo has a lot to offer in its own right. Consider adding an extra day to your trip to explore the Queen City fully.

Things to Do

Buffalo is bursting with activities all year long. From top-notch museums to stunning parks and busy waterfronts, there are plenty of activities for kids and families, while couples and friend groups can also find plenty of things to do. Art and architecture fans, foodies, sports enthusiasts, and nature lovers will all be happy here. Don’t miss these activities:

  • Ice-skate: Winter visitors will be rewarded with a truly local experience as Canalside and the riverfront become a winter wonderland, complete with ice-skating, curling, and ice-bicycling on the lit-up canal. Rotary Rink and Buffalo Riverworks are other outdoor skating options downtown.
  • Ogle the architecture: Buffalo is home to multiple Frank Lloyd Wright homes and buildings, including the famous Darwin Martin House that you can tour, as well as Louis Sullivan’s Guaranty Building, H.H. Richardson’s landmarked Romanesque Richardson Olmsted Campus, Eliel and Eero Saarinen’s Kleinhans Music Hall, and Louise Blanchard Bethune’s Hotel at Lafayette.
  • Get on the water: The western terminus of the Erie Canal is an integral part of Buffalo, plus the Buffalo River and Lake Erie complete the waterfront trifecta. In summer, you can rent a kayak, paddleboard, pedal boat, or water bike. At Buffalo River, there’s a historic river cruise and boozy sailboat cruises to climb aboard, plus a pirate-themed one great for kids.

What to Eat and Drink

Everyone knows Buffalo wings were invented in Buffalo—and any visitor must eat them at the source (just called “wings” here) at Anchor Bar, where they were invented. But there are several other local foods to eat in Buffalo too: Be sure also to try Beef on Weck (at Schwabl’s or Charlie the Butcher), sponge candy from Fowler's Chocolates or Watson's Chocolates, chicken finger subs from Jim's SteakOut, and Buffalo-style pizza, a hybrid of deep dish and New York-style with charred pepperoni cups (try it at Carbone's Pizzeria or Lovejoy Pizzeria). There are also more upscale, farm-to-table spots like Billy Club and Roost worth checking out.

Buffalo has a solid craft beer scene with more than 35 breweries in the area, including Flying Bison Brewing Company, Community Beer Works, Hamburg Brewing Company, Resurgence Brewing Company, Big Ditch Brewing, and 42 North Brewing. There are also several distilleries like Lakeward Spirits, Lockhouse Distillery, and Black Squirrel Distillery.

Explore our article on the  best chicken wing spots in Buffalo .

Where to Stay

Buffalo has various options for accommodations. All the budget and midrange chain hotels are represented, and there are a few historic independent hotels worth checking out, including The Mansion on Delaware Avenue ; Curtiss Hotel, an Ascend Hotel Collection Member; Reikart House, Buffalo, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel ; and Hotel at the Lafayette a Trademark Collection Hotel . There’s also a wide selection of affordable Airbnbs, including apartments, townhouses, cottages, and houses. Downtown, Elmwood Village, and Allentown are good neighborhoods to use as a base.

Getting There

There are several ways to get to Buffalo:  flying , by train, bus, or driving. The Buffalo Niagara International Airport  in Buffalo is 9.4 miles from downtown Buffalo and 25 miles to Niagara Falls. Amtrak trains run to Buffalo from various cities, including New York City and Toronto; there are two stations in the city, Depew Station and Buffalo Exchange Street. Buses are the cheapest option, with Greyhound and Megabus running to the city, but they often take the longest time. And of course, driving is always an option.

Money Saving Tips

  • Buffalo has six stunning parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted that are all free to explore, plus a 3-mile scenic trail by the canal to walk, run, or bike along.
  • Several museums and attractions have certain days or times that are "pay what you wish" or are sometimes free, like the Buffalo History Museum, the Buffalo Arts Studio, and the UB Anderson Gallery.
  • Visit during the spring, fall, or especially winter to save on airfare, hotels, and Airbnbs.

We would like to thank the over 720 people who attended the 2023 Richardson Olmsted Tour Season. Led by an expert docent, visitors will gain access to spaces untouched since the 1970s.

Visitors were immersed into the philosophies integrated into the Richardson by architect Henry Hobson Richardson, landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and mental health advocate Dr. Thomas Kirkbride.

During the tour, visitors experienced some of the site’s original structures as well as the healing landscape designed to serve as a therapeutic environment for patients.

NYPA Board Approves $1 Million Funding Award to Restore Cultural Center in Niagara County

Governor Hochul today announced low-cost power awards to 11 firms that will spur more than $5.2 billion in capital investments. The awards, approved by the New York Power Authority Board of Trustees, support 5,781 jobs throughout the state. In addition, two funding awards, totaling more than $1 million, were awarded to two firms in Western New York, including the Niagara Arts & Cultural Center.

“My administration is spurring $5.2 billion in low-cost power investments across the State of New York – helping businesses thrive, and creating and maintaining jobs for New Yorkers,”  Governor Hochul said.  “The Empire State is open for business, and these substantial investments in a clean energy future underscore our position as a global hub for modern manufacturing.”

ReCharge NY

The approved allocations of nearly 32 megawatts (MW) of low-cost power under the ReCharge NY program will be directed to nine companies in the Capital District, Finger Lakes, Southern Tier, Mohawk Valley, Hudson Valley, New York City and on Long Island.

First  announced  by the Governor in May 2023, fairlife, a producer of milk and protein shakes, is investing $650 million to construct a 745,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in Monroe County to produce milk beverages in the Town of Webster that will lead to the creation of up to 250 jobs. Empire State Development (ESD) is additionally providing up to $21 million in assistance for the project through the performance-based Excelsior Jobs Tax Credit Program in exchange for the job creation commitments.

Also included among the ReCharge NY awards approved at today’s meeting was a 15 MW power allocation to GlobalFoundries, a Saratoga County-based semiconductor manufacturer, to expand its existing Fab 8 manufacturing site and then build a new, 358,000 square-foot semiconductor manufacturing facility on its campus in Malta as part of a nearly 2 million square-foot expansion, tripling its capacity to meet growing demand for chips. The NYPA board also approved an additional 90 MW of High Load Factor power that NYPA will procure for GlobalFoundries on the energy market. Earlier this month, Governor Hochul  announced  GlobalFoundries’ $11.6 billion investment to expand its Saratoga County manufacturing plant.

ReCharge NY has strengthened New York State’s economy by encouraging companies to retain and create jobs, while sparking capital investment throughout the state. ReCharge NY offers power contracts with terms up to seven years. Half of the power — 455 MW — is from NYPA’s Niagara and St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt hydroelectric power plants. The remaining 455 MW is lower-cost power bought by NYPA on the wholesale market.

Western New York Hydropower

At today’s meeting, the NYPA Board of Trustees approved low-cost Niagara hydropower allocations to Buffalo Games and Mayer Brothers in Western New York firms.

Buffalo Games, an Erie County manufacturer of jigsaw puzzles and board games, was awarded 750 kilowatts (kW) of low-cost Niagara hydropower by the NYPA board to support the firm’s $6.5 million expansion project. Buffalo Games is upgrading its manufacturing capabilities, warehousing and distribution infrastructure, and power service. The expansion is expected to increase its jigsaw puzzle production by more than six million units annually and create 95 jobs.

ESD is incentivizing Buffalo Games’ continued growth in Erie County by providing up to $1 million  in Excelsior Jobs Program tax credits in exchange for job creation commitments. In addition, Buffalo Games also received a $105,000 economic development grant from National Grid.

The NYPA trustees also approved a 210-kW Niagara hydropower allocation to Mayer Brothers for a more than $1.5 million expansion project. Mayer Brothers, one of the oldest family-owned businesses in New York State, is a manufacturer, processor, and distributor of apple juice, cider, water and other beverage products. The firm, established in 1852, will construct a new building to produce bottles used in the cider and water sectors of its operation. The building will house additional equipment and machinery related to its bottling operations, accommodating an increase in the output of bottles, and allowing the company to produce beverages in a more efficient and cost-effective manner. The expansion project will support nearly 300 jobs, with six being newly created.

Low-cost Niagara hydropower is available for companies within a 30-mile radius of the Power Authority's Niagara Power Project or businesses in Chautauqua County.

Western New York Power Proceeds

At today’s meeting, the NYPA board also approved more than $1 million in funding awards from the Western New York Power Proceeds Fund to the Niagara Arts & Cultural Center and Irish Welding in Erie County.

The Niagara Arts & Cultural Center, a non-profit organization that houses work from more than 100 artists and is comprised of three theaters, a radio station, a public classroom space, and two public and numerous private galleries, was awarded $1 million of Power Proceeds funding to support an $8.5 million restoration project. The project will upgrade the facility’s Legacy Theatre, associated restrooms and energy infrastructure, including upgrading the facility’s HVAC system. The project is also being supported by a $4 million capital grant from the Regional Economic Community Assistance Program, which is managed by ESD.

The NYPA board also approved an $87,000 funding award to Irish Welding, a Buffalo-based, family-owned company that distributes carbonic supplies and gases, and soft drink syrup and juice products in Western New York. The funds will be used by the firm to undertake a nearly $437,000 project to construct a new water line. Irish Welding currently receives its water from an old, 3,000-foot line often subjected to railroad traffic vibration that has caused leaks. The project will allow the company to remain at its current location, supporting 83 jobs.

NYPA funding awards are made possible through net earnings resulting from the sale of unused hydropower generated at the Power Authority’s Niagara Power Project and stems from power proceeds legislation signed into law in 2012.

New York Power Authority Chairman John R. Koelmel said,  “The Niagara hydropower allocated to Buffalo Games and Mayer Brothers will ensure that the two Western New York-based businesses have the resources to expand their operations, creating more than 100 jobs and strengthening the region’s economy. The New York Power Authority is committed to its support of Western New York through the allocation of low-cost power from the Niagara Power Project, which supports tens of thousands of regional jobs in the region and is the backbone of New York’s clean energy economy.”

New York Power Authority President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll said,  “The Power Proceeds funding approved by the NYPA board will help the Niagara Arts & Cultural Center preserve a nationally recognized historic building and support its mission to provide a creative space for local artists and art enthusiasts. The funding awards approved at today’s meeting underscore the Power Authority’s commitment to being a good neighbor to communities surrounding NYPA facilities and infrastructure.”

Empire State Development President, CEO & Commissioner Hope Knight said,  “Governor Hochul’s comprehensive approach to grow New York’s economy is helping businesses like fairlife, GlobalFoundries and Buffalo Games and non-profits like Niagara Arts & Cultural Center expand, increase their workforce and improve communities. With NYPA and ESD incentives, we are taking a strategic approach to strengthen the Empire State and our efforts are demonstrated with these success stories.”

State Senator Tim Kennedy said,  “Through dedicated investments in our workforce and business community, New York is clearly and strategically prioritizing the growth of our greater economy. I'm happy to see these awards approved by NYPA's board, and firmly believe this builds on our state's commitment to advancing an ambitious climate agenda.”

State Senator Rob Ortt said,  “The investments provided by NYPA to businesses in Western New York and throughout the state ensure our workforce will be well-equipped to handle the increased demands of our growing economy. I’d like to thank Chairman Koelmel and the entire board of trustees for their continued support of local businesses in New York State.”

State Senator Patrick Gallivan said,  “NYPA’s allocation is critical to the expansion of Mayer Brothers, which supports nearly 300 local jobs and Western New York families. The Power Authority provides low-cost power resources that help local businesses grow and prosper. I thank Mayer Brothers for its ongoing commitment to our community and wish the family-owned business continued success.”

Assemblymember Angelo Morinello said,  “I’d like to thank NYPA and Governor Hochul for their continued support for economic development and their focus on our great Niagara Arts & Cultural Center. This grant will assist in preserving this historic building and promote the Arts. The Arts bring cultures together with a common goal of creativity, camaraderie, and friendships.”

National Grid Regional Director Ken Kujawa said,  “Buffalo Games is one of many companies with whom we’ve worked that have benefitted from our robust suite of economic development programs; they’ve demonstrated that they’re expanding operations, retaining jobs, and adding staff members. Through our Electric Capital Investment Grant Program, which offsets business expansion-related utility infrastructure upgrade costs, we provided $105,000. We look forward to continuing to work with Buffalo Games to identify cost-saving opportunities through other programs, including those that offer energy efficiency incentives.”

New York State's Nation-Leading Climate Plan New York State's nation-leading climate agenda calls for an orderly and just transition that creates family-sustaining jobs, continues to foster a green economy across all sectors and ensures that at least 35 percent, with a goal of 40 percent, of the benefits of clean energy investments are directed to disadvantaged communities. Guided by some of the nation’s most aggressive climate and clean energy initiatives, New York is on a path to achieving a zero-emission electricity sector by 2040, including 70 percent renewable energy generation by 2030, and economywide carbon neutrality by mid-century. A cornerstone of this transition is New York's unprecedented clean energy investments, including more than $46 billion in 65 large-scale renewable and transmission projects across the state, $6.8 billion to reduce building emissions, $3.3 billion to scale up solar, nearly $3 billion for clean transportation initiatives, and over $2 billion in NY Green Bank commitments. These and other investments are supporting more than 170,000 jobs in New York’s clean energy sector as of 2022 and over 3,000 percent growth in the distributed solar sector since 2011. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, New York also adopted zero-emission vehicle regulations, including requiring all new passenger cars and light-duty trucks sold in the State be zero emission by 2035. Partnerships are continuing to advance New York’s climate action with 400 registered and more than 100 certified Climate Smart Communities, nearly 500 Clean Energy Communities, and the State’s largest community air monitoring initiative in 10 disadvantaged communities across the state to help target air pollution and combat climate change.
