6 long-distance bike itineraries in Europe that promise epic adventure

bicycle trips in europe

Some people like to relax on their summer vacations. Some like to stay active. And yet others seek out invigorating, adrenaline-pumping, even grueling holidays that test their endurance and deliver the ultimate in thrills.

If you’re in the last group, read on.

Adapted from Lonely Planet’s The Bikepackers’ Guide to the World , the itineraries below will test your mettle as they take you up, down and across Europe . The payoff? Sublime views, superb training and the endless pleasure of taking the road less traveled. (In this case, way less traveled.)

So gear up – and get ready for some continental-scale adventures.

1. Trans Dinarica Trail

Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Hercegovina 758 miles (1220km); challenging

The multi-use Trans Dinarica Trail was designed by local enterprises to encourage visitors to explore the Western Balkans by bicycle, and currently covers Slovenia , Croatia and Bosnia & Hercegovina . It’s a sister trail to the Via Dinarica hiking route , which extends into Albania , Kosovo and North Macedonia . The Trans Dinarica starts in Slovenia’s Soča Valley , famous for its water sports, then rolls through the foothills of the Julian Alps beside the Italian border before dipping into Croatia for a foray into the forests of Risnjak National Park . Next, it shadows the Adriatic before a transfer takes riders across the border and into Bosnia & Hercegovina, where it visits Mostar and Sarajevo .

Two men cycle on a bike path by water and wind turbines, Schouwen-Duiveland, Zeeland, the Netherlands

2. Ronde van Nederland

The Netherlands 860 miles (1384km); easy

Holland’s long-distance cycling routes, known as LF routes , are an easy way of exploring this cycle-friendly nation. Most use traffic-free bike paths that are wide and well made. Some of the classic trips include the LF Kustroute along the North Sea and Wadden Sea coastlines; the popular LF Zuiderzeeroute around an inland sea and through national parks and historic towns; and the LF Vechtdalroute linking quiet Dutch villages. But put some of the LF routes together and you get this fantastic 860-mile (1384km) circuit of the Netherlands . Dunes, dykes, canals, sculptures, megaliths, polders, towns and villages feature. Completing the Ronde van Nederland earns riders a special certificate.

3. Iron Curtain Trail

Germany Distance varies; moderate

EuroVelo’s EV13 route , the Iron Curtain Trail follows that great geopolitical fissure from the Barents Sea to the Black Sea, through Norway , the Baltic nations , Poland , Germany , the Czech Republic , the Balkans, Romania , Bulgaria and beyond to Turkey . It’s not yet complete but will cover more than 6214 miles (10,000km) when finished. However, the German section is mostly signposted and ready to ride. The history of the Iron Curtain means that there are some fascinating sites to visit along these quiet roads and bike paths. But if you want to get further off the beaten track, consider the Iron Curtain Gravel Trail , a 426-mile-long (685km) trail crafted by Markus Stitz that runs from the Harz mountains to the Czech border (maps available via komoot.com ).

A group of mountain bikers descend down a narrow trail near Mont Blanc, Alps, Europe

4. Tour du Mont Blanc

France, Switzerland & Italy 105 miles (169km); challenging

File this trip under “do now, while you can.” Climate change is causing the glaciers of the High Alps to melt, which means that the stability of these mountains is changing and, increasingly, that trails such as this loop around western Europe’s highest peak are diverted or closed due to rockfalls and other dangers. But while it’s possible, the Tour du Mont Blanc is a fantastic challenge for mountain bikers, who need only carry enough kit for three or four nights spent in refuges. Most start at Chamonix and will enter three separate countries on their ride. They’ll also cross rivers, climb several passes above 6500ft (1981m) and eat their own weight in pastries.

5. Torino-Nice Rally

Italy & France 435 miles (700km); challenging

Beginning life as an annual bikepacking rally – a noncompetitive group ride – designed by James Olsen, this gorgeous route explores some of the lesser-known Alpine regions between Turin in Italy and Nice in France , and can be ridden at any time between late June and early September when the higher parts are free from snow. Riders take a mixture of rough gravel tracks and trails, with some road diversions available if needed. Bikes are usually hardtail mountain bikes, but gravel bikes with chunky tires will also be fine. And accommodation can be in some of the mountain refugios on the route or under canvas, depending on preference. There’s a lot of ascent, obviously, so most need eight or more days if stopping to savor the views and the local food.

6. Great North Trail

UK 825 miles (1328km); challenging

Snaking north from England ’s Peak District National Park to the tip of Scotland , the Great North Trail touches on some of the UK ’s greatest cities and its wildest open spaces. This is a mountain-bike route for experienced cyclists if attempted as a single trip, but it’s easy to break it up into sections. The first leg borrows the Pennine Bridleway , which hugs the ridge of hills between Manchester and Leeds before entering the patchwork of stone walls and green fields in Yorkshire Dales National Park . The route then crosses the open moors of Northumberland National Park , and heads into the Scottish Borders at the mountain-biking hub of Peebles before visiting Edinburgh and Glasgow and taking on the real mountains of Scotland on its way to John O’Groats.

Larry, Another great cycling assault on the Alps and SE Switzerland completed another area of my quest. Thanks for accommodating me as being solo and for your flexibility in changing the routes so that we could still ride the passes missed on rainy days. Overall I missed 2-3 that I would have liked to have done—but my side trips to the Matterhorn and Jungfrau will be great memories. Thanks for another great trip! If at all possible to do the Dolomites in June-July then I’m sure…we’ll be back next year!

The Vipava Valley is an area of outstanding beauty, in the northeast corner of Slovenia, close to Italy.

Cycling here is great year around, offering a multitude of routes, local traditions and wine and food options . Did you know that two of Slovenia’s ten Michelin starred restaurants are in the Vipava Valley?

The scenic hills are perfect for seasoned cyclists, and e-bikes make them accessible to all. The climbs up Mt Nanos, the Trnovo Plateau and the Banjšice Plateau are great targets for road cyclists , while these slopes are also home to spectacular trails for mountain bikers .  Local guides are familiar with the best routes and can organise tours and transport to the starting points of cycling routes.

Vipava Valley also offers superb refuelling options, and there are some excellent pit stops on friendly agritourism farms  and  wine cellars.

Off the bike, Vipava Valley is full of beautiful places to stay, including the ancient town of Vipava , lovely Ajdovščina with its extraordinary Roman legacy, the medieval town of Vipavski Križ and Nova Gorica with its parks, roses and cultural monuments.

Cycling holiday in Vipavaia Valley Slovenia

Best spring cycling destinations

The largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca has been extremely popular with holidaymakers over the last 50 years or so. Over the last twenty years, the island has developed its offer, and helped along by Team Sky’s (now Team Ineos) regular training camps, it is now considered to be one of the best places to cycle in Europe.

As with so many parts of Spain, Mallorca boasts 300 days of sunshine a year and combined with mild winters and easy accessibility from main European cities, it is seen as the number one ‘go to’ location for many cyclists, and one of the most suggested cycling regions for anyone seeking recommendations. It is certainly the most visited destination guide on www.epicroadrides.com, which is quite some achievement when you consider that there are no UCI WorldTour stage races held on the island.

For the amateur cyclist who wants to cycle Europe, there is an ideal mix of terrain, from the Tramuntana mountain range in the west to the flat but very scenic roads in the south and east. Added to that, of course, you can test yourself on the same stretches of road that the professionals from Team Ineos, Movistar and countless other teams ride on whilst at their training camps.

The climbs of Sa Calobra and Puig Major, while not as steep as the mountains you would find in mainland Europe, are extremely popular and packed with cyclists in the high season. The Mallorca 312 (a 312-kilometre sportive) is going from strength to strength and takes place every April. It all makes for one of the best cycling holidays in Europe, and one of the best cycling destinations in the world.

Our in-depth guide to Mallorca (which includes links to related route guides and articles).

The Andratx to Banyalbufar section of the Big Dadd route with sea views and perfect road surface, Mallorca

If Mallorca is where the professional cyclists train and hold their training camps, then Girona is the city where a disproportionate amount of them live. Further north than Mallorca, and within touching distance of the Pyrenees, you would be hard-pressed not to spot a professional cyclist as you take to the super smooth and virtually traffic-free Catalonian roads.

First made famous by Lance Armstrong, who lived in the city for many years, a lot of professionals from outside of Europe now base themselves in the area as geographically it affords easy access to the premier races on the UCI race calendar in neighbouring France and Italy.

As you walk through the streets of Girona’s old town, you can see the cycling influence: restaurants and cafés (some owned by ex-professionals) are intermingled with high quality bike rental, tour and cycling service companies. It oozes chic sophistication and with fantastic, quiet roads its undoubtedly one of the best places to cycle.

There is a mix of terrain starting from gentle climbs, such as the popular Els Àngels , to the more arduous tests of Mare de Déu del Mont and the well-known Rocacorba . Stray a little further to the north west as you hit the front ranges of the Pyrenees and the climbs get more demanding.

Many would say that Girona is one of the very best road cycling destinations in Europe.

Our in-depth guide to Girona (which includes links to related route guides and articles).

Mare De Déu Del Mont Girona, Costa Brava, Spain

Costa Daurada

The Costa Daurada (Golden Coast) sits just south of Barcelona on Spain’s eastern coast and is certainly less famous than Mallorca and Girona.

The area is working hard to build its reputation and at the moment still remains a pretty well-kept secret – but given its fantastic climate, roads and cycling routes, we’re not sure it will stay that way for too much longer, and may soon be part of the discussions when looking at the best cycling holidays Europe has to offer.

If you don’t like crowded roads and want to get away from it all then the Costa Daurada and its long coastline is well worth a closer look. It is extremely accessible being served by both Barcelona airports as well as nearby Tarragona. Two professional teams, Bahrain Merida and UAE Emirates, have held training camps in the area and there are now more and more cyclo-tourists riding the roads around Cambrils and Salou.

The resort is an ideal place to clock up those pre-season base miles and whilst there are many flat roads adjacent to the coast, there is no shortage of climbs in the Serra de Montsant, Muntanyes de Priorat , Mussara and Prades areas. Most of the ascents are under 10 kilometres in length at manageable gradients of between 3% and 6%.

So, if you’re looking at cycling holidays abroad this year, the Costa Daurada is definitely worth a look before it gets wider recognition as one of the best European cycling destinations, and the crowds begin to descend.

Our in-depth guide to Costa Daurada (which includes links to related route guides and articles). We’ll also give a little shout-out for the nearby Terres de l’Ebre region , just to the south of the Costa Daurada and the Barcelona region just to the north. Definitely worth a look if you’re interested in the Costa Daurada!

Cyclist admiring view in Prades mountains, Costa Daurada

The Algarve offers some of the best cycling holidays in Europe thanks to its diverse terrain, warm climate, and quiet roads.

While it might not (yet) be the most popular road cycling location in Europe, it is slowly growing in reputation, not least thanks to some WorldTour and ProTeams using the region for their training camps. This year alone, both Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team (WorldTour) and Human Powered Health (UCI ProTeam) held their pre-season training camps here.

The Algarve borders Spain in the east and lies on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean to the west, so the climate is temperate all year round, although summer can be extremely hot, reaching temperatures of 20°C first thing in the morning! That’s why spring is probably a better bet, as temperatures are more manageable throughout the day, yet you don’t have to fight for hotels or space on the roads with tourists that visit during the high season for the beaches.

In terms of cycling, there are decent-sized mountains inland, with the most famous climb being the Foia climb in the Serra de Monchique. It is often used in the professional stage race, Volta ao Algarve, which is held on an annual basis, usually in mid-February, and attracts some of the best professional cyclists in the world. The organisers also put on a sportive on the same weekend as the professional race, and we’ve covered this and two other key events, (including a mountain biking race) in our article here .

Elsewhere there are more rolling hills to contend with, and for those who prefer flatter routes, we recommend staying near the coast. There are also plenty of bike hire options if you don’t fancy taking your own.

If you’re looking for the best cycling locations Europe has to offer, the Algarve certainly won’t disappoint.

Our in-depth guide to cycling the Algarve . Our article on Portugal’s N2 route and our guide to the best cycling events in the Algarve  should also be of interest.

Best summer cycling destinations

French alps.

People have been cycling through Europe, and in particular the French Alps, from time immemorial. However, the ever-increasing publicity surrounding the Tour de France and the willingness for amateur cyclists to punish themselves on these fabled slopes ensures that they will never lose their appeal.

Excitingly, as part of a continuous improvement process in the area, a very ambitious ‘made for cyclists’ project has recently been launched. Entitled the ‘Via 3 Vallées’ project the three ski resorts, south of Moûtiers, namely Courchevel, Méribel and Val Thorens are being linked by the creation of asphalt mountain roads for the exclusive use of cyclists! So it won’t just be one of the best places to bike in Europe anymore, it will also offer some of the best road cycling in Europe too.

Stages one and two have now been completed which means that you can cycle from the altiport at Courchevel (circa 2,000 metres) up and over the Col de la Loze on a brand new 6-kilometre road. This incidentally increases the height of the Loze to 2,304 metres meaning it will be the 11th highest col in France.

Then, at the end of 2019, another new ‘cyclist only’ road (7.5 kilometres) down the other side to Méribel was completed, meaning that the two resorts are now connected by bicycle. This has created a superb 62-kilometre circular loop (1,970 metres) starting and finishing in Les Allues and incorporating the ‘new’ Col de la Loze and the new roads.

The final part of the project will see another ‘cyclist only’ road between the Col de la Loze and the Val Thorens ski station – a cyclist’s dream! So, if you’re thinking of where to go this year, this really could be one of Europe’s best places for cycling holidays!

Road up the Ornon valley

Nice has been synonymous with cycling for over a hundred years, indeed it was in 1906 that the fourth edition of the Tour de France visited the capital of the Côte d’Azur. It’s been back many times and in 2024, Nice will host the final stage (which is being moved from Paris due to the 2024 Olympics).

The best European cycling holidays combine a pleasant climate, great culture and top-quality cuisine – and Nice is famed for all three (along with its stunning coastline).

Other than a great coastline bike path that runs from Nice’s port to Antibes, much of the area is dominated by big climbs as you leave the city and head for the hills. To the north west lies the Parc Naturel Régional des Préalpes d’Azur where you will be able to test your climbing legs on the 19-kilometre ascent of the Col de Vence .

Head out to the east, on undulating terrain, in the direction of Monaco and the Italian border and you will eventually reach the seaside town of Menton. If you then traverse due north into the hills of the Alpes-Maritime you can then climb the Col de la Madone (Lance Armstrong’s training climb) and the nearby, hairpin-laden Col de Braus as well as the aforementioned Turini .

If you want some of the best cycling Europe can offer, with some tough challenges, then Nice is worth checking out.

Our in-depth guide to Nice and the Côte d’Azur (which includes links to related route guides and articles).

View of Nice, one of the best cycling destinations in europe

When you visit a town with a reputation for downhill skiing you know beforehand what sort of terrain you are likely to encounter! Situated in northern Italy and very close to the border with Switzerland, Bormio transforms itself in the late spring and summer months into a mecca for cyclists (don’t arrive too early in the year – many of the passes don’t usually open until May/June!). It’s highly recommended as one of the best cycling trips in Europe.

Top of the bill is the legendary Passo dello Stelvio which sits on the edge of the town. The description by the Italian newspaper La Gazetta dello Sport probably best sums up the climb when it wrote that the mountain was ‘a serpent of asphalt, five tunnels, 21.5 kilometres and 1541 metres of climbing’.

That said, the north eastern ascent of the mountain from the village of Prato is generally regarded as the classic ascent due to the 48-hairpin bends that are contained within the 25 kilometres of vertical ascent. It is probably the most photographed mountain in cycling history. (There is also a third ascent of the Stelvio available starting in Switzerland via the Umbrail Pass ).

Also within cycling distance of Bormio are the famous climbs of the Passo Gavia and the super hard Passo del Mortirolo , both steeped in Giro d’Italia folklore. Stage 18 of the 2020 Giro d’Italia saw the peloton climb the Stelvio (from Prato) before scaling the hairpin-packed and spectacular Torri di Fraele to finish by the Cancano dam .

A truly incredible region with the potential of making it one of the best cycling holidays in the world.

Ever since the Innsbruck Road World Championships in 2018, Austria has seen more interest as a destination for road bike holidays in Europe. Testing gradients and the scenic views are just two of many reasons Austria should be on your list of cycling destinations in Europe to visit.

Austria lets you tailor your trip to your preferred style of riding. If you like mountains, then head west, where there are cols here to rival those in France and Italy. If heat is a deciding factor in your Europe cycling tours, then head to the east, particularly around Vienna, where it is also flatter.

The ideal time to visit Austria is between June and September, particularly if you’re wanting to visit the mountains where outside of these months you might experience some road closures due to snow. The fantastic scenery and variety of terrain make Austria one of the best cycling trips Europe has tucked away – though the growing popularity means it can’t be considered a hidden gem for much longer.

In this article, John Vincent shares his Salzkammergut cycling tour itinerary or, if you’re looking for places to stay in the mountains but want a destination a little less-known than France, read our article on the best places to stay in the Alps.

Slovenia is a fantastic destination, one of the best places for cycling holidays in Europe, and it’s also recognised as the continent’s most sustainable country. It’s somewhere cycling is encouraged as both a mode of transport and for tourism.

Slovenia is a country full of hidden gems, and with the rise of the strength of Slovenian riders in the professional peloton like Tadej Pogačar and Primož Roglič, it’s somewhere that more and more cyclists are considering for their European cycling tours and holidays.

Slovenia does have a lot to offer, particularly in the summer. Ride along dedicated cycle paths and discover gorgeous places like the Vipava Valley , Lake Bled, home to blue and green lagoons and traditional castles and architecture. Alternatively, challenge yourself in the Julian Alps .

Best autumn and winter cycling destinations

Another new winter cycling destination has emerged as Cyprus starts to gear up to welcome more and more cyclists to the island. Driven by a national push to encourage more people to use bicycles as a means of reducing their carbon footprint, a cycling culture is clearly developing. For winter cycling trips, Europe’s best destinations offer over 300 days of sunshine – and with Cyprus averaging 326 days each year, there’s a lot to like!

The island has a diverse selection of terrain, from flatlands in the east to undulating terrain in the south. The area around the Troodos mountain range is arguably the best place for cycling on the island, offering an opportunity for the climbers to test their legs.

In addition to the warm weather, an added bonus due to the particular climate of the region is that there is little or no wind on the island. If you normally spend your winter in colder climes, this is a huge plus point!

As a popular holiday destination, there is a good selection of quality hotels, restaurants and shops, and there are now established cycle routes and bike rental outlets in all the main towns and cities such as Larnaca, Nicosia, Limassol and Paphos.

Definitely one to consider for 2024 if you’re looking at different places to go cycling.

Costa Almeria

Costa Almeria is a gem of a hidden cycling destination! A coastal province quietly tucked away on Spain’s southern coast between the commercialised areas of the Costa Blanca (e.g. Alicante and Benidorm) and the Costa del Sol (Marbella and Malaga), with its own microclimate and average temperatures of between 16 and 22 degrees in the winter months.

It’s a perfect winter cycling destination in Europe.

Sitting by the sea and the nearby Parque Natural del Cabo de Gata-Níjar and surrounded by the Sierra Filabres mountain range, you will find the holiday resort of Mójacar and a good range of hotels, restaurants and shops. Venture west into the hills, and you will have the super smooth roads to test your legs as you climb the Sierra Bedar and the Puerto de la Virgen (a pre-season favourite hill climb test for the professionals).

Heading further west to the town of Gérgal, you can sample two ‘Especial’ climbs made famous by the Vuelta a España, the Alto de Velefique (Almeria’s own Alpe d’Huez) and the 30-kilometre-long climb to the giant observatories at Calar Alto . This area sits alongside the Desierto de Tabernas, the only true desert in mainland Europe and the one made famous by Clint Eastwood in the Spaghetti Western movies.

A word of warning – don’t be alarmed if you don’t see a car or another person for miles! This is a sparsely populated part of Spain, and in reality, when you get into the hills, it’s just like riding on closed roads. In our view, it’s more than worthy of being called one of the best road cycling holidays in Europe.

Gran Canaria

The Canary Island resort of Gran Canaria has quickly earned a reputation as an excellent new cycling destination in Europe and is a great choice for winter cycling holidays. Sitting just 100 kilometres off the northwestern coast of Africa, it boasts some 3,000 hours of sunshine each year – that’s 8 hours per day on average!

But there’s much more to it than the weather, as the island has everything required to get you in shape for the forthcoming season. Challenging climbs, good quality road surfaces, stunning coastal roads, and deep canyons. The added advantage of it being a popular holiday destination also means that hotels, shops and restaurants are in plentiful supply, particularly on the coast.

The Vuelta a España has, in recent years, visited the island and raced to a stage finish at the summit of the popular Pico de las Nieves (Snow Peak), which at 1,950 metres is the highest point on the island.

One of the other highlights of Gran Canaria is the infamous Valley of Tears, probably the most revered climb on the island. It’s a brutal climb with sections at 25% and is clearly steep enough to test anyone’s legs!

It’s fair to say that Gran Canaria is thought of by many as one of the best road cycling destinations out there.

Balkan Triangle Bike Tour

To the uninitiated, cycling vast distances across a country might sound like a torturous idea. But anyone who’s hopped on the back of a bike and pedaled their way around a new destination will likely tell you there are few better ways to take in the sights.

In many ways, cycling offers you the best of both worlds. At cycling pace you cover just enough distance not to feel dejected — even those unaccustomed to the sport can cover several dozen miles in a day, more if you opt for an electric bicycle. This will expose you to various attractions and changing landscapes in a matter of minutes, and although you can cover good distance, you’re not going so fast that the world is whistling on by.

You’ll be exposed to the elements — the fresh smells, the crisp air, the baking sun, chirping of birds, and the odd bleat or bray. You’ll work up a sweat on the uphills, and relish in the downhills.

If you’re a fan of pedal-powered sightseeing, then Europe is packed full of options suitable for all skill and fitness levels, both guided and self-guided. These are some of the best biking tours on the continent.

Rhine Valley - Amsterdam, Germany, Switzerland

Rhine Valley Bike Tour

The Rhine Valley makes for one of the most scintillating train rides in Europe, but far fewer tourists have ditched the tracks for the tarmac. The benefits of riding the Rhine Valley, with a starting point in Amsterdam, are clear — aside from the physical accomplishment of the journey, you’ll also be coasting at a pace slow enough to take in the medieval castles, glistening river and idyllic vineyards.

You’ll also have ample opportunity to stop off along the way to sample local wines and other delicacies, arriving in Basel, Switzerland some eight days later.

It’s possible to plot a route that uses only paved roads, and there are several hundred miles of bicycle paths that allow for a safe and relaxing experience. Although the route might sound daunting, it’s possible to spread it out to no more than 40 miles per day at a fairly leisurely pace.

Most cycle tour companies in Europe offer guided tours along this famous route, but the EuroVelo website offers comprehensive details on how to go it alone — from the river’s source, all the way to its mouth in the Black Sea.

West Balkan Triangle - Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina

Balkan Triangle

The Balkan countries of Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina have seen a surge in tourism in recent years — a trend that’s hardly surprising given their mediterranean climate, wallet-friendly prices and remarkable natural scenery. From fjord-like mountains to tranquil bays, unspoiled lakes, vast flats and remote islands, there’s an endless tapestry of sights in the region labelled the West Balkan Triangle.

Of course, these factors all make the region perfect for a multi-day cycling trip. The terrain between the three countries is relatively flat, and though you may have to venture onto some busy roads and up a few hills, there are also large stretches where it’ll likely just be you, the bikes and the ocean.

Though you could explore this route on your own, given the border crossings, language changes and some difficult roads to negotiate, a tour like the one offered by BikeTours.com is perhaps  the most rewarding way to take it all in. They offer a fully supported trip that starts in Dubrovnik, Croatia, moves south to Kotor, Montenegro, and then heads up through stretches of Bosnia-Herzegovina, before returning you to your starting point by shuttle.

Malaga to Seville - Spain

Malaga to Seville - Spain Bike Tour

Spain is not short of avid cycling fans, thanks to the legendary cyclists who cut their teeth on the slopes of the terrifying Pyrenees, and continue to rake in medals and accolades in major events around the world. Fortunately, there are cycling tours throughout the country that offer somewhat easier terrain for the less accomplished rider.

The south of Spain is particularly conducive to rewarding cycling tours, and there are several companies — including Cycling Country , Euro Bike and Andalusian Cycling Experience — that lead groups between the region’s most revered destinations, or can point you in the right direction for a self-guided trip.

Most of these rides include the likes of Granada, Cordoba and Seville. Old train tracks, now converted into bike paths, make for safe travel much of the time, and you’ll likely only encounter traffic close to big cities. Although the terrain isn’t quite that of the Pyrenees, there are enough hills along the way to ensure an elevated heart rate, earning you a few plates of tapas at the end of the day.

Trieste to Pula - Italy, Slovenia, Croatia

Trieste to Pula Bike Tour

If you like the idea of trundling along the Istrian Peninsula from Italy all the way to Croatia, with a quick stop-off in Slovenia, then there’s a fantastic cycling trail to consider along this route. It starts off in the Italian border city of Trieste, and winds its way down the Adriatic coasts of Slovenia and Croatia, all the way to the city of Pula.

It’s a dazzling route along the Adriatic that takes riders through quaint fishing villages, past verdant vineyards, and along remote valleys. Freedom Treks offers a self-guided option to explore the route at your own speed, including route notes, directions and all accommodation bookings. The route is generally flat and suitable for most fitness levels, with a total distance of 155 miles.

London to Amsterdam - Belgium, England, France, Holland

London to Amsterdam Bike Tour

The ride from London to Amsterdam is up there on many cycling bucket lists, and for good reason. It’s another journey that takes you between two European capitals, and it’s an impressive feat in its own right. It also traverses diverse landscapes in four separate countries, includes a short ferry ride, and offers possible stops in towns like Dunkirk, Flanders and Bruges, all rich in fascinating history.

The route is mostly flat, and at a push it’s possible to get between the two cities in just four days. If you’re looking for a slightly more relaxing approach, most choose to break it up into approximately eight days of 40 miles each.

Because of the good roads and cycle paths, and the ample accommodation along the way, this is a journey that many cyclists take on alone. But if you’re looking for support vehicles to take some the stress out of the trip, there are several companies that will tag along as support and help you with advance bookings.

l’Etape du Tour - France

l’Etape du Tour - France

If you’ve always harbored dreams of competing in the Tour de France, but never quite had the mettle, then l’Etape du Tour might just be your closest alternative. This famous one-day cycling event allows rookie cyclists to tackle a single Tour de France stage, while the professionals put their feet up on a rest day.

Though the stage will no doubt push even accomplished amateurs to their maximum limit, many choose to tack this on to a bigger sightseeing tour around the country. Each year, Trek Travel facilitates a multi-day cycling adventure, with the l’Etape du Tour day featured as one of several grueling challenges.

In previous years, Trek Travel’s tour has included some of the Tour de France’s most legendary climbs and descents, accompanied by a handful of celebrity guests to keep participants motivated along the way.

Salzburg to Vienna - Austria

Salzburg to Vienna

Austria’s stunning lakes, rivers and forests may make cycle tours easy on the eye, but anyone who’s been to the small Central European country will know there are several towering peaks that dominate vast regions. Fortunately, the cycle route between Salzburg and Vienna includes all of the scenery, and very little of the climbing.

This popular cycling route typically traces long stretches of the famous Danube. Many people choose to start in Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the home of inescapable Sound of Music Tours, before heading to cycle paths alongside the waters on the way to Linz. A particular highlight is the teal water of Lake Attersee — the largest freshwater lake in the country.

From Attersee, you’ll skirt the fringes of several more beautiful bodies of water, before cycling through the wine-rich Wachau Valley, a short cycle or train ride away from the capital.

Most people aim to finish the route in about seven days, with cycling legs ranging between 19 and 40 miles. Given its popularity, it is easily cycled as a self-guided trip, but there are also several companies that will deal with all accommodation bookings, return train trips and supply support vehicles, including BikeTours.com  and TripSite .

Paris to Moscow - France, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia Estonia, Russia

Paris to Moscow

This may just be the most dramatic cycling tour on the continent, spanning the vast distance between Paris and Moscow. The route, nicknamed “The Napoleon” because it loosely follows Napoleon’s Russian Campaign of 1812 , will require you to cycle some 2,700 miles over the course of 45 days.

The ride starts out in the regal streets of Paris, where cyclists can take in the sights of the French capital before embarking on the epic expedition. From France, riders venture east through Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, eventually arriving in Russia.

The route may sound daunting, but it takes you through some of the most spectacular scenery on the continent. You’ll see everything from sprawling capitals to medieval towns, and cycle through pristine vineyards and the densest of forests.

The route is, conceivably, one you can undertake on your own steam. You can also commit to just a few of the multi-day legs. But if want to ensure you stick to the best possible route, and have the benefit of a support vehicle carrying your luggage and a few spares, it might be worth signing up for a guided tour. Ride&Seek is your best bet for information on tackling The Napoleon as part of a guided tour.

Berlin to Copenhagen - Germany and Denmark

Berlin to Copenhagen - Denmark and Germany Bike Tour

There’s something truly satisfying about journeying between two capitals on your own pedal power, and there are few better to connect by bike than Copenhagen and Berlin.

Obvious attractions of each capital aside, the cycling between the two cities is remarkable. Most of it takes place on well-maintained cycle paths, and it’s possible to cover the 400-odd miles over 10 relatively stress-free days, including a short ocean crossing.

You can choose to take the journey from either city, or, if the mood takes you, do it all again in reverse and return to your starting point.

The towns you’ll pass through along the way are all notable destinations, made all the more special by the fact that those traveling in faster modes of transport tend to overlook them. You can also plan your route to cycle to some beautiful natural attractions, including Lake Stechlin, several canals, and both Nossentiner Heide and Mueritz National Parks.

There’s no shortage of companies offering to guide you through this trip, but it’s one that you can easily accomplish on your own. The comprehensive Bikeway Berlin-Kopenhagen website will help you plan your route, download GPS coordinates, locate accommodation, and shares highlights and interesting activities to include along the way.

The (Full) Danube - Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary

Danube Bike Tour

If the sound of the Salzburg to Vienna journey is music to your ears, but you’re looking for something to really get those thighs burning, why not include a comprehensive Danube cycle on your bucket list? It’s 1,800 miles from the river’s source to where it empties in the Black Sea, and for many touring cyclists this is the ultimate biking tour on the continent.

Given the sheer length of the river, you’ll never be short of epic views and dramatically changing scenery as you wind your way between remote, fertile valleys and four of the continent’s most iconic capitals.

In spite of its length, this is one of the easier routes in Europe to do on your own steam, free from the confines of an organized tour. There is a wealth of information online that details the best routes and other details like campsites and suitable stopover towns along the way. There’s even a Danube Cycle Path website that charts the route from the river’s source in Germany, all the way to Slovakia, Hungary and even further east.

Danish Isles - Denmark

Danish Isles - Denmark Bike Tour

Denmark is a fantastic cycling destination — just ask the the millions of cyclists who use two wheels for their daily commutes. According to the Cycling Embassy of Denmark , up to a quarter of Danes use bikes for trips of less than 3 miles, and 16 percent use them for all trips.

If you choose to tour the country by bicycle, you’ll fall into the latter group, but the stunning natural scenery and fascinating history will keep you motivated throughout. Most tours will take you past castles and historic towns, and through some spectacular mountain and ocean-side scenery.

If you’re looking for a truly memorable way to see Denmark while on a bicycle, then the obvious trip to choose is one that explores the Danish Isles, neatly marketed as Viking country. There are several companies, including Austin Adventures , that will lead you on a week-long expedition starting in Copenhagen, then connecting you to destinations like Helsingør, Svendborg and Odense, before returning back to the capital.

Though some of these tours will easily cost upwards of $3,000 for a full week of touring, the returns in terms of food, accommodation and bucket-list-worthy sights tend to justify the initial capital outlay.

Bologna to Parma - Italy

Bologna to Parma - Italy Bike Trip

There are few countries in Europe better suited to sightseeing by bike than Italy. Though it’s possible to embark on a trying trip around the Alps or Dolomites, most choose routes that take in the more tranquil aspects of Italian life — the food, drink, historic towns and serene rolling hills between them.

If you’re looking for the ultimate Italy-by-bike highlights package, then you don’t need to look much further than BikeTours.com's A Taste of Italy . This kicks off in the town of Bologna, and takes you on a week’s journey through pasta country.

You’ll end up in the town of Parma, but also embark on several loop rides from your bases along the way, which means a welcome emphasis on the good life. That said, the average day includes up to 30 miles of cycling, so those glasses of Lambrusco wine and overflowing plates of pasta will be well deserved.

Provence - France

Provence - France Bike Tour

France’s Provence is idyllic biking tour country. Imagine sitting up on your saddle and taking in your surroundings of lavender fields, snow-capped peaks and historic hilltop towns, then nestling down for the night with celebrated Provencal wine and food.

Most organized tours start in the southern city of Avignon and take you on a circular route through to Orange, Beaucaire and St. Remy. Each destination shares the sights, sounds and flavors familiar to the south of France, and yet each is pleasantly unique.

There are routes through the region to suit all skill and fitness levels. There are several companies that will guide you through the journey, but Discover France offers a wide range of the most extraordinary self-guided bicycle tours in the country, including several in Provence.

Galway to Slan Leat - Ireland

Galway to Slan Leat - Ireland Bike Tour

There are few better ways to celebrate, or commiserate, a long day in the saddle than with a pint of Guinness. Fortunately, there’s a lot of Guinness to go around in Ireland, particularly on a cycle tour that leads you from Galway all the way to San Leat.

Couple the vibrant pub life with warm and welcoming locals, intriguing Gaelic culture, and the breathtaking Connemara and County Galway coastlines, and you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve stumbled across bike tour heaven.

Ciclismo Classico offers cycling tours of the region, which includes vehicular support, guided historical walks, a cycling detour to the Cliffs of Moher and all creature comforts in between.

If you’d prefer to explore Ireland by bicycle on a self-guided tour, Irish Tourism outlines some of the best and most accessible options through the country’s most incredible scenery.

The Amber Trail - Hungary, Slovakia, Poland

Amber Trail Bike Tour

The Amber Trail, which connects Hungary, Slovakia and Poland, is so named because of the historic trading of amber along the route. Though no longer used for its founding purposes, the trail is still accessible — as a popular trekking and cycling course through some of the region’s most charming small towns.

There’s an otherworldly pace to many of the regions that you’ll pass through on this trip, which will contrast starkly with the beautiful bustling cities of Budapest, Prague and Krakow. The scenery along the way also varies dramatically, from the beautiful Danube, right through to the tough slopes of the Low Tatras.

As the route follows a historic trail, it’s a fantastic option to take on as a self-guided ride. Much of the riding is on quiet backroads, with the occasional detour onto light off-road tracks and trails. If you do decide to venture out without an organized tour, there are several useful online resources — including a comprehensive route profile, covering all 270 miles, on the Bike Map website.  BikeTours.com and Footloose Travel Guides also offer information on guided and self-guided options.

the Canal du Midi towpath near Narbonne.

10 of the best easy cycling holidays in Europe

While Geraint Thomas wannabes might tackle the Alps or Pyrenees, here are 10 less-challenging but equally scenic routes for families and newbies

Toulouse to Sète, Canal du Midi, France

It is possible to cycle all the way across south-west France, from Bordeaux on the Atlantic to Sète on the Mediterranean, following just one river and two canals. Beginners might prefer to pace themselves by cycling the second half, from Toulouse to Sète along the towpaths of the Canal du Midi . At 150 miles (240km), it is a decent distance, but is flat and can be broken up into manageable stages. The going can be a bit rough and bumpy, so consider investing in a gel saddle cover. Places to spend a night or two include the fortified city of Carcassonne, a short detour from the canal, and historic Béziers. DIY info freewheelingfrance.com Organised tour Belle France has seven-night self-guided trip from Toulouse to Agde from £1,620, including six days’ cycling, bike hire and support, luggage transfers and half-board accommodation. There is an optional one-day add-on to Sète.

Mother and daughter cycling along Danube river in Wachau Valley, Austria

The iconic river spans 10 countries and 2,850km, and has well-developed riverside cycle paths through Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. There is no traffic to contend with – other than the 38,000 cyclists who ride the Austrian section alone every year – and tackling it in a downstream (south-westerly) direction means the route is slightly downhill pretty much all the way. Good starting points include Regensburg or Passau in Germany, finishing in Vienna or Bratislava, capital of Slovakia. Alternatively, start in Vienna and cycle the 370km to Budapest, where there are thermal baths to ease aching muscles. DIY info danube-cycle-path.com Organised tour Intrepid Travel has a seven-night guided trip from Budapest to Vienna from £931, including B&B in hotels, bike hire, luggage transfers and entry to the Carnuntum Roman ruins in Austria, and the Esztergom Basilica and Szechenyi Baths, Hungary.

Pisa to Florence, Tuscany

The Serchio River near Lucca

Hilly Tuscany may not be an obvious choice for an easy cycling holiday, but keeping the distances short and adding rest days makes it doable – and the scenery is well worth the effort. Start with a day or two in Pisa, then cycle along the Serchio River to the walled city of Lucca (45km). The next day, cover another 45km to Montecatini Terme, Italy’s biggest spa town, stopping at Collodi and Pescia along the way. Either spend a day in the spa or cycle a circular route around the Medici villas, through vineyards and olive groves, stopping at Vinci to visit the Museo Leonardiano (60km). The final ride to Florence is the longest, at 64km, but it can be shortened to 50km by taking the train to Pistoia and cycling the rest of the way. DIY info italy-cycling-guide.info Organised tour The Carter Company has a seven-night self-guided trip, starting and ending in Pisa, from £890 B&B, including bike hire and luggage transfers.

North Zealand, Denmark

Kronborg Castle, immortalised as Elsinore in Hamlet.

Denmark is very bike-friendly, with 12,000km of cycle routes, safe cycling lanes in cities and largely flat terrain. Cyclists can spend a week following a circular route around North Zealand, known as the Danish Riviera, starting and finishing in Copenhagen – a popular route with families. Cycling anti-clockwise, the path hugs the shores of the Baltic Sea, sometimes turning inland through forests, nature reserves and around lakes, then skirts the fjords – Ise Fjord, Lammefjord, Holbæk Fjord, Roskilde Fjord – before reaching Roskilde. Daily distances average about 45km, and there are lots of beaches and coastal villages to stop at. Attractions en route include Kronborg Castle (Elsinore in Hamlet), and Roskilde’s cathedral and Viking Ship Museum . DIY info visitnorthsealand.com Organised tour UTracks has a seven-night self-guided trip from £1,150 (£830 children), including B&B, bike hire and luggage transfers.

Black Forest, Germany

Lake Titisee, Black Forest,

The Southern Black Forest Cycle Route is a 248km circular journey beginning and ending in Freiburg. The asphalt path follows a former railway line and is suitable for families, including those with young children in trailers. The route is mainly flat, with a few minor hills in the forest (a short train journey from Kirchzwarten to Titisee Lake on the first day cuts out the only steep section). The scenery is a mixture of forest and farmland, with a couple of days spent riding alongside the Rhine and the last day through vineyards. Cyclists can spend the nights in small medieval towns, and take a short train ride across the Swiss border for a night in Basel. DIY info germany.travel Organised tour Flexitreks has a six-night self-guided trip from £483 B&B, including luggage transfers and train to Basel; bike hire £69.

Istrian Coast, Italy, Slovenia & Croatia

Bikers sitting on steps above Piran and the Adriatic

Cyclists can visit the three countries that share the Istrian peninsula on a week-long ride. The terrain is slightly hilly but distances are short, averaging 40km a day. The route starts in the Italian port of Trieste, then heads south on a coastal cycle path to pretty Piran in Slovenia. From here, it winds through the Sečovlje salt pans, then crosses into Croatia. Continuing south, places to spend a night include Umag, a medieval walled town; Poreč, with its sixth-century Euphrasian Basilica; and Rovinj, probably the most picturesque town on the peninsula. The path hugs the coast all the way down to the final stop, Pula, known for its well-preserved Roman amphitheatre. Fažana, 8km north of Pula, is the embarkation point for ferries to the Brijuni Islands. DIY info istria-bike.com Organised tour Zenith Holidays has a seven-night self-guided trip from £827 B&B, including bike hire and luggage transfers.

Amsterdam to Bruges

cycling in the main square of Gouda.

The Netherlands is paradise for cyclists: almost completely flat, with courteous drivers and segregated cycle paths everywhere. Cycling from Amsterdam across the border to Bruges, in equally bicycle-friendly Belgium, is perfectly possible in a week, but the distances are a little challenging: the first day’s ride, from Amsterdam to Gouda, is 80km. Another possibility is an organised bike and barge trip, sailing some of the way and cycling the rest, and eating and sleeping on board. A typical itinerary would involve rides of about 40km a day, spending nights in Dordrecht, Antwerp, Dendermonde and Ghent. From Bruges, there is a 37km loop to the beaches of the North Sea coast. And if it all gets too much, there is the option to skip a day’s cycling and stay on the barge. DIY info hollandcyclingroutes.com and fietsroute.org Organised tour Saddle Skeddadle has a seven-night guided bike and barge trip from £925 full-board.

Way of the Roses, Lancashire to East Yorkshire

Sign for the ‘Way of the Roses’ cycle route, Greenhow, Yorkshire

Not ready for Land’s End to John O’Groats just yet? The Way of the Roses is a challenging but rather more manageable long-distance ride: 275km from Morecambe on the Lancashire coast to the seaside town of Bridlington, East Yorkshire. The route follows quiet country lanes, disused railway lines and cycle paths. There are some tough climbs in the Yorkshire Dales, and the highest point, Greenhow Hill, near Grassington, is 400 metres above sea level. But after this (roughly the halfway point) the hills get smaller, and beyond Ripon the route is largely flat. The varied terrain includes the Forest of Bowland, the Nidderdale AONB, the Vale of York and the Yorkshire Wolds; the first day’s riding goes through Lancaster and the fourth day ends in York. Based on a six-day ride, the average daily distance is 46km. DIY info cycle-england.co.uk Organised tour Open Road Open Skies has a five-night self-guided trip from £445 B&B, including luggage transfers; bike hire is an extra £50.

Riverside houses in Girona.

There is a corner of eastern Catalonia, south of the Pyrenees, where the hills slope down to a fertile valley that is flat and ideal for cycling. Starting inland in the Garrotxa region, cyclists can explore the meadows, woods and hamlets along the via verde (cycle path) and country roads. Near the town of Les Planes d’Hostoles, there are waterfalls to cool off in. The off-road continues right into historic Girona, where it is well worth spending a couple of days exploring sights including the Gothic cathedral, Jewish quarter and city walls. The final stretch leads to the Mediterranean, finishing at the upmarket resort of s’Agaró on the Costa Brava. DIY info viasverdes.com Organised tour Inntravel has a seven-night self-guided trip from £1,018 B&B, including four dinners, bike hire and luggage transfers.

Around Lake Constance

Boy jumping from a diving board into the Lake Constance, Bregenz, Austria

Lake Constance is bordered by Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and a 168-mile cycle path encircles the lake, allowing cyclists to visit all three countries on a week-long trip. The path is well-maintained and signposted, and is suitable for families and beginners. The route goes through forests, farms, vineyards and orchards, past cathedrals, castles and convents, and there are views of the Alps as well as the lake. Highlights include the Unesco-listed monastic island of Reichenau; the historic towns of Meersburg and Lindau; and the wildlife-rich Rhine delta. Cyclists can cool off with a dip in the lake or one of the summer lidos. It is best to ride clockwise, breaking the journey into four or more stages. DIY info bodenseetouren.eu Organised tour Headwater has a seven-night self-guided trip from £1,139, including B&B and five dinners, bike hire, luggage transfers and ferry from Staad to Meersburg.

Food was excellent, and mileage was sufficient and cyclist could ride more miles at the end of each day if desired. I would recommend this tour for those folks who like flat easy riding and not having to pack and repack each day.

Bike & barge tour Provence and Camargue: from Aigues-Mortes to Avignon

My first bike and barge trip, it was a wonderful experience! Well planned. The crew was great, clearly working together well. Nice to see. Irene's dinners were as good as any following restaurant meals in Avignon and Paris. Yum! Sorry I didn't take pictures of her delicious dishes before eating them. Two criticisms - as another woman observed, there should have been two tour guides, with one riding sweep. That responsibility shouldn't be left to us. Also, the A/C in my cabin was way too cold. Overall, it was tremendous! Looking forward to the next one; hope so anyway! Thanks..

Amsterdam to Bruges Bike & Barge - Comfort

I took the Bike and Barge trip from Amsterdam to Bruges. There was so much good about this trip - our guide, Simon, was excellent on all fronts. However, there were 24 cyclists and Simon had no assistant. That is totally unacceptable. It was only by luck that we had some very experienced cyclists on this tour who assisted Simon when needed: and there were numerous occasions.

However time runs later in the west of Ireland . Westport is 9.5 degrees west of Greenwich meridian so that’s 40 minutes later by the sun. Just chill and put your personal time zone back an hour. You will have daylight until after 10pm.

Thanks @drumlog. I didn’t even think to consider having daylight for so long. I appreciate the bike hire company recommendation as well. Hoping we have good enough weather to do the ride.

Westport looks like a worthwhile visit though.

EU Policy. Cycling Declaration hailed as ‘historic’ moment for Europe

From left to right: MEP Karima Delli, transport committee chair, Belgian deputy PM Georges Gilkinet, EU transport commissioner Adina Valean.

Although it carries no legal force, cycling advocates have greeted an undertaking by governments and MEPs to make Europe a more bike friendly place as an important recognition of the health and environmental benefits and a milestone in EU transport policy.

Cycling is “one of the most sustainable, healthy and efficient” ways to cut greenhouse gas emissions, EU governments have agreed as they committed to build more cycle lanes and secure parking places, improve safety for riders, and promote schemes to encourage a switch from four wheels to two.

The undertaking is part of a European Declaration on Cycling signed in Brussels on Wednesday (3 April) during a gathering of transport ministers organised by Belgium, which currently chairs intergovernmental talks as holder of the rotating EU Council presidency.

Governments commit to “significantly increasing safe and coherent cycling infrastructure across Europe” and increasing safely for cyclists, “in particular by physical separation of cycle paths from motorised traffic where relevant, or by ensuring safe speeds in mixed traffic”.

The European Cyclists’ Federation welcomed the declaration. “Today, we celebrate…a truly historic achievement,” the advocacy group’s director Jill Warren said. “This declaration holds the potential to unlock the benefits of cycling for millions of European citizens.”

The declaration was also endorsed by the European Parliament, which had called early last year for the EU executive to develop a dedicated cycling strategy with the aim of doubling the number of kilometres cycled across the union by 2030.

Also contributing to the momentum generated by a surge in cycling and the deployment of cycle routes during the covid pandemic, pro-cycling EU member states Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Ireland, Denmark and the Netherlands produced their own declaration in 2022. They were subsequently joined by another ten, including France and Spain.

The European Commission followed up last October with the draft text for a joint EU declaration. The text signed by all three EU institutions this week did not go as far as the parliament had wanted, with no concrete targets and no legal obligations, but was nonetheless hailed as a “an important step” by Belgian deputy prime minister Georges Gilkinet.

"The declaration was the first ever European level text setting out a general policy on cycling,” Gilkinet, who also serves as Belgium’s mobility minister, told reporters today (4 April) at the end of the two-day ministerial meeting that he chaired. “For the first time, the bicycle is recognised as an element of mobility policy at the European level,” he said.

Transport Commissioner Adina Valean, who signed on behalf of the EU executive, said implementation of the undertakings set out in the declaration were a matter for governments and regions “who choose to do so”.

She stressed, however, that the Commission had sought to promote cycling through other pieces of legislation, such as a recently adopted law on passengers rights which requires train operators to provide spaces for bicycle transport.

The ministerial summit also yielded a Brussels Declaration on "the mobility of tomorrow", which, as well as echoing the main points of the agreement on cycling, also called on the next Commission to make "the modal shift towards rail transport a central objective of European mobility policy".

10 Best Road Trips in Europe [2024 Europe Road Trips Guide]

F act: road trip destinations don’t get much better than Europe. From the winding alpine roads of Switzerland and France to the spectacular coastal routes in Italy and Ireland, there are more incredible road trips in Europe than you can shake a stick at!

Furthermore, there are road trips for all occasions and interests. The best road trips in Europe take you through wine country, around lakes, into ancient towns, and up sweeping mountain passes. Truly, whether you have an afternoon or an entire month available, if you’re looking for an epic adventure, a cultural experience, or a simple break from the city, there’s a European road trip that’s up to the task.

The tricky part’s deciding which one to do first! To help, we’re going to reveal 10 of the best Europe road trips available – whether you go in a car, a campervan , or on a motorbike. Let’s dive in.

The Best Road Trips in Europe

Wild atlantic way in ireland.

The Wild Atlantic Way is an epic road trip that runs 1600 miles (2600km) along the west coast of Ireland. One of the world’s longest-defined coastal routes, it starts from Derry in the north and ends at the pretty town of Kinsale, County Cork, in the south.

Wild in both name and nature, driving the entire distance will reveal the very best of Ireland’s rugged, ancient, and weather-beaten coastline. You’ll pass through stunning countryside and picturesque villages, bearing witness to historic monuments, towering cliffs, and legendary landscapes at every turn.

A few highlights of the route include:

  • The magical Cliffs of Moher
  • Slieve League (a mountain in Country Donegal whose name in Irish means “mountain of stone pillars”)
  • The lively and historic town of Galway, and
  • The Ring of Kerry (another famous European road trip)

North Coast 500 in Scotland

The North Coast 500 (NC500) is Scotland’s answer to Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. Widely regarded as the best road trip in Scotland, it brings together 500+ miles of the country’s most impressive scenery, sights, and attractions.

Passing through the notorious Highlands, your mind will boggle at the remote and unblemished beauty on display. Quaint fishing villages, sugar-soft white sand beaches, age-old lochs, rugged mountains, and sites of historical significance are just a few of the hidden gems you can expect to encounter.

Starting and finishing in Inverness – the UK’s northernmost city – you hug the coast of Scotland along a series of existing roads that form a loop around the top of the country. This road trip was actually only established in 2014 but quickly became popular among locals and visitors alike. A few highlights of the route include:

  • The huge Smoo Cave, which was formed by both sea and rainwater (making it unique in the UK)
  • The ruins of Ardvreck Castle at Loch Assynt
  • The wildlife (especially the infamous highland deer!)
  • The mile-long Corrieshallock Gorge, complete with a Victorian suspension bridge that crosses it

Atlantic Road in Norway

Often referred to as one of the most beautiful drives on the planet, the Atlantic Road in Norway is a real sight to behold. A unique route and remarkable feat of engineering, the road connects Averoy with the mainland, snaking out over the ocean in a series of small islands and bridges.

Proof that the best road trips in Europe aren’t always the longest, the Atlantic Road itself is only 5 miles (8km) long. Officially, it runs from Karvag to Vevang. However, it forms one section of a longer National Tourist Route between Bud and Kristiansund – the entirety of which is worth driving.

A phenomenal road trip, it’ll be a struggle to keep your eyes on the road as you gaze at the coastal scenery – views that chop and change depending on the weather conditions you happen to experience at the time.

Explore more of Norway! Here are the best things to do in Oslo , family-friendly things to do in Bergen , and our guide to exploring Norway’s fjords .

Almafi Coast in Italy

The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most popular travel destinations. And for a good reason! This 30-mile (50km) stretch of coastline is unlike any other on the planet.

Colorful old villages sit atop sheer cliffs, with cerulean waters below reflecting the blue skies and blazing sun above . Beautiful beaches and hikes litter the area, matched only by the mass of restaurants, bars, shopping opportunities…and tourists!

Trust us, a road trip along this inimitable coastline is hard to beat. Driving down the Amalfi Coast road, otherwise known as the SS163, will leave you speechless.

A staggering stretch of tarmac, it hugs the cliffs and winds through pristine, pastel-colored towns – starting in Sorrento and heading south past Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, and Vietri sul Mare. Take it slow, stop to explore each town, and fall in love with the aptly-named Divina Costiera (AKA the Divine Coast).

Arctic Coast Way in Iceland

You’ll find another of the best road trips in Europe in Iceland. One of the most picturesque countries on earth, it’s full of incredible sights and natural wonders – as well as infamous driving routes that take you past some of its most iconic attractions.

Chief among Iceland’s famous road trips is the Arctic Coast Way. This epic, 560-mile (900km) journey runs along the country’s northern coast, encompassing six peninsulas and just as many islands. The whole route takes anywhere from 3 to 12 days to drive, and a 4×4 is recommended for the trip.

This is nature at its finest, and you’ll pass a huge array of unforgettable attractions. Indeed, it’d require an entire article to provide a complete list of Arctic Coast highlights! To keep things short, here are a select few items to add to your Iceland road trip itinerary:

  • The Hofsos swimming pool, with its mindblowing views over the ocean
  • The Hofsos basalt columns that rival the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland
  • Humpback whale watching
  • The geothermal sea baths at Husavik
  • The Arctic Henge in Raufarhofn

Transfagarasan Highway in Romania

Welcome to what’s arguably Romania’s best-known road – not to mention one of its most popular tourist attractions.

Over 93 miles (150km) in length and with countless twists and turns, the Transfagarasan Highway looks like it was built solely to please road trippers! Expect switchback after switchback through a stunning landscape , leading up to an impressive high point of 6500 feet and exceptional views over the surrounding area.

The road cuts a striking sight – especially from above. Another amazing feat of engineering, it winds back and forth up a beautiful natural gorge, passes through tunnels, and crosses the Vidraru Dam (offering a fantastic look at the eponymous lake in the process).

Be sure to take your time and stop at the viewing points as you go. This is partly to stay safe on the ascent! But, with so much beauty on display, it’s mainly so you can make the most of the Transfagarasan Highway’s unbelievable scenery.

Ready to explore the Romanian capitol? Here are 10 great activities in Bucharest, Romania to enjoy with kids .

Route Napoleon in France

Route Napoleon isn’t just one of the best road trips in Europe. It’s also one of the most famous.

Following an escape route that Napoleon Bonaparte took in the early 19 th Century, the journey takes you 200 miles (325km) from the coastal town of Golfe-Juan, in the French Riviera, all the way north to the city of Grenoble.

The route’s as scenic as it is historic, too, passing a wide range and ever-changing landscapes from sweet-smelling lavender fields and pine forests to rolling hills, rocky outcrops, gorges, and mountains. Get ready for stunning vistas and equally impressive roads at every turn.

Trekaroo Tip: You can stick with tradition and attempt this Europe road trip in the same direction as Napoleon (from south to north). Yet many people choose to do it from north to south instead. That way, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea when you approach the French Riviera at the end.

Romantic Road in Germany

Romantic in both name and nature, this wonderful road trip is one of the very best in Germany. The Romantische Straße , as it’s called there, is 285 miles (460km) long and takes you through a slew of charming towns and jaw-dropping countryside, complete with ancient castles that look like something straight out of a Disney movie!

As for how long this road trip takes, consider giving yourself between three and four days to go from the start, in Wurzburg, until the end in Fussen. To prolong your German adventure, we recommend spending another couple of days in Munich afterward. Located just over 1.5 hours away from Fussen, the Capital of Bavaria is a popular travel destination in its own right.

Oberalp Pass in Switzerland

Searching for another iconic European road to drive down? Look no further than Oberalp Pass (AKA Route 19) in Switzerland.

Located at over 6,719 feet (2,048m) above sea level, this high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps connects the Graubunden and Uri cantons. However, all you really need to know is that it’s utterly phenomenal! Just under 20 miles long, the pass runs from Disentis to Andermatt and provides unbelievable views of the surrounding mountains at every twist and turn in the road.

Steep and riddled with switchbacks, the pass is magnificent. Take note, though: Oberalp Pass is usually impassable between the end of October through April (although the final dates depend on how much snow and meltwater are present).

Read our full guide to visiting Switzerland with kids .

Glossglockner High Alpine Road in Austria

Last but not least on this list of the best road trips in Europe is the Glossglockner High Alpine Road in Austria – the highest paved mountain road in the country.

Popular with cyclists and sports car enthusiasts alike, this memorable toll route climbs up to an almighty 8215 feet (2504m) above sea level in a mere 30 miles (48km), with no fewer than 36 hairpin bends along the way. It runs from Fusch-Furleiten in Salzburg to Heiligenblut in Carinthia, taking you into the stunning Hohe Tauern National Park in the process.

Once again, this European road trip isn’t available all year round. It’s usually open from the start of May until the end of October, although inclement weather conditions can restrict access to the road at any time of year.

As you can tell, thanks to its countless scenic roads and awe-inspiring landscapes, this diverse continent across the pond is a haven for anyone with a penchant for road trips. In fact, there are so many routes available that picking one can feel impossible!

With any luck, the options in this post will have given you some useful inspiration for which European road trip to do first. From the stunning Swiss Alps to the rugged coastline of Ireland, any of them is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories.

Lithuania & Latvia: Vilnius to Riga with Country Walkers

If last summer is any indication—and bookings for 2024 suggest that it is—parts of Europe will be as inundated with crowds as they were in 2023. The best way to avoid the hordes is to go somewhere off the beaten path, seeking out corners of Europe free of mass tourism. Here are five European trips for those seeking a respite from the madding crowd.

Lithuania & Latvia: Vilnius to Riga

Country Walkers pairs two of the Baltics’ most desirable destinations on this eight-day trip, blending rural traditions and history. Rated Easy/Moderate includes visiting castles and historic palaces and exploring some of the scenic trails into the national parks of Trakai, Curonian Spit, Žemaitija, Gauja, and Kemeri. A visit to an amber museum and a tour of one of Europe’s largest markets, guided by a Latvian chef. There is availability in June, July and August and the cost is $4,545 (prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, land-only).

Albania with Hinoki Travels.

Hinoki Travels chose Albania for its farm-to-table splendor, lesser-explored mountain trails, and warm-natured hospitality. It has put together a small group trip to Southern Albania with a theme of Provenance. Celebrating the region’s varied cultures, food & agriculture, and vast landscapes, this nine-day trip focuses on being hosted by local farmers, food producers, shepherds, local guides & small business owners. Accommodation is in guest houses in villages, and a highlight is sampling local food & wine. The adventures include hikes of five to six hours a day on rough, uneven terrain with varying elevations. There is also a rafting trip on the wild Vjosa River. The trip supports the efforts of EcoAlbania and Albanian citizens dedicated to protecting this river, one of Europe’s last wild-flowing rivers. There is one departure, September 14-22, 2024, and the cost is $3,250.

Exploring Zagoria with Wilderness Travel.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Hidden Villages of Northern Greece

The crowds may flock to the Greek Islands, but you’ll encounter far fewer tourists if you head north. Traditional Greece can still be seen in Zagoria, where stone villages sit above the Vikos Gorge. On this 12-day Wilderness Travel trip, there are hikes along shepherds' paths and across arched stone bridges that span the gorge. The itinerary includes the monasteries of Meteora, which date as far back as the 13th century. The trip concludes with a hike up Mt. Olympus, the home of the gods for the ancient Greeks. Rated Level 4+, Moderate to Strenuous, this trip features daily hikes, with accommodation in hotels and simple pensions. Hikes are mainly on old mule trails and vary from 3-5 hours daily at 3,000 to 9,403 feet. There is an October 2024 departure, and the price is $4,595.

Hiker in Tatra Mountains, Poland.

Poland & Slovakia Walking & Hiking Tour

Backroads has organized this six-day national parks adventure from Kraków to the Tatra Mountains, the dramatic natural border between Slovakia and Poland. Rated levels 1-4 (out of 5), it’s a hike through mountain passes and lakes in a region dominated by the 25 peaks of the Tatras that reach more than 8,000 feet. Traverse from Poland to Slovakia on foot while exploring the Pieninys range dramatic scenery, explore the region known as Lesser Poland, and hike among the mountain lakes, waterfalls, and fields of sheep in Slovakia's High Tatras. The journey concludes in Kraków, a World Heritage site city. There are departures in August and September, and the price is $4,499.

Bran Castle, associated with the Dracula legend and Bram Stoker.

Romania: Transylvania & Beyond

This trip from Wild Frontiers begins in Bucharest, Romania’s capital, and goes into the heart of the great ranges of the Carpathian Mountains. Cultural crossroads of Central, Eastern, and South-eastern Europe for centuries, Romania has an abundance of well-preserved medieval towns, castles, and churches. The trip crosses the Transalpina, visits the World Heritage setting of Horezu Monastery, and goes through the old Saxon heartlands of Transylvania. It includes visiting the well-preserved town of Sibiu and the rural villages of Maramureş before crossing the Carpathians again to see the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina. In Moldavia, guests hear the legends and vampire myths of Sighişoara and Bran, the latter of which is associated with Bram Stoker and the Dracula legend. There is also time to explore the UNESCO sight of Viscri and the medieval heart of Brasov. This 15-day trip has a departure in September and is rated Low/Moderate for fitness, with a cost of $4,138.

When travel journalist Jenn Rice decided to spend July and August in Italy and Croatia last year, she wasn’t expecting to be spending most of her time indoors. “It was very very hot, so I booked museum tickets during peak days or just lounged around in my room with a spritz and a book until the sun set.” In Dubrovnik she tried escaping to the sea for a cool dip, but everyone else had the same idea—resulting in sweaty, overcrowded beaches. “In Rome , gelato melted faster than the speed of light,” she says.

Come summer, major attractions like the Spanish Steps in Rome are thronged by international tourists and vacationing Europeans.

Rome and Dubrovnik weren’t the only European destinations overcome with heat. To travel in Europe in the summer of 2023 was to experience first-hand a single season of contrasting extremes. Temperatures swung from hot and dry to cold and wet, and heatwaves broke out across several of the most heavily touristed destinations, with temperatures reaching upwards of 100°F. In Northern Greece, wildfires broke out —the worst experienced there in 20 years —destroying homes, forests, and vineyards.

Yet in the midst of it all, the continent also saw record-breaking tourist numbers —the highest since pre-pandemic levels—even as hotel prices swelled and airfares hit peaks. From scenic escapes like Bellagio in Como and Taormina in Sicily (where the White Lotus effect was on full display) to bucket-list cities like Paris and Madrid , much of touristed Europe was completely overwhelmed.

“We had people calling us from Athens and Rome asking us to get them out [to somewhere cooler in Europe], because it was too hot and too crowded,” recalls Jan Sortland , founder of Scandinavia specialists Norwegian Adventures.

International tourists weren’t the only ones thronging these spots. According to the European Travel Commission , most Europeans took their vacations before the peak month of August, with Italy and France being their top destinations. This resulted in packed crowds at all the major attractions. For John Canning, an LA-based executive who traveled to Paris in July, the crowds were eye-opening. “We didn’t anticipate that everything we would want to see was sold out. We only got Musée d’Orsay tickets through our concierge at a substantial premium and could not get into the Louvre full stop,” he says.

Rice says the summer taught her to plan her travel differently this year—and beyond: “I’m going to try and do coastal Italy early in May, and if I decide to travel in Europe this summer it will be either Asturias in Northern Spain or the Julian Alps in Slovenia to keep cool."

She’s not alone—according to the travel specialists we spoke with, there’s an increased interest in lesser-known destinations offering a more laid back (and cooler) holiday. “Our guests are asking after places where they can be outdoors, yet have access to wine & foodie experiences and culture. Slovenia is a great example of where you can have all that without being overwhelmed with the heat; the Dolomites in Italy is another,” says Rachael Mendizabal, Europe travel specialist at Scott Dunn . Richard Hyde, COO at Small Luxury Hotels of the World , is seeing similar trends across their European portfolio: “Guests seem to be gravitating towards alternative destinations—Milos instead of Mykonos and Slovenia instead of Spain.”

Norway is a popular destination this summer, offering cooler weather and a myriad ways to be active outside, exploring the islands and fjords.

A big part of that shift will play into Sortland’s area of expertise: Northern Europe. With the Med getting too hot to handle, experts predict that tourism will shift northwards. “We’re seeing a lot of interest in Copenhagen and Stockholm for the cultural experience, and then onward to Norway for the nature. Currently, the fjords are still a favorite but Norway is a large country and there’s so much more to see—the Helgeland coast for example with its beautiful coastline and mountainous islands,” he says. The draw is a more moderate temperature and unique outdoor experiences. “ Iceland is a big favorite right now with the Northern lights being the most active this year from September through March,” says Mendizabal.

In turn, for many, the more standard city breaks will fall later in the year. “Athens and Rome will always be desirable destinations, but we’ve seen an uptick in many people preferring to go there in May and October to swerve crowds,” says Carolyn Addison, head of product at Black Tomato , noting the weather in fall has been stable lately and enticing to travelers not tied to school holidays.

With this increased flexibility, shoulder season will become tricker to define, according to Mendizabal. Thanks to hotels extending their season as demand shifts to almost year-round and the high-season pricing window getting longer, the days of “scooping a deal in September are likely over.” At Jumeirah Palace in Capri , the season now runs from March to the end of December. “Thanks to the good weather, guests are staying longer than in the past,” says Ermanno Zanini, regional vice president at Jumeirah Group, Southern Europe and United Kingdom.

Castello di Vicarello in Tuscany 's Maremma countryside has traditionally stayed open in March and November. “We're pushing the low season as much as possible because we truly believe it is a wonderful time to discover Tuscany. There is so much for guests to enjoy from hiking to mountain biking, truffle hunting, and wine tastings,” says owner Neri Baccheschi Berti.

Crucially, traveling in the shoulder and off seasons isn't just about avoiding the crowds; it’s knowing that seasonal destinations are multi-dimensional, with year-round appeal. “One of my favorite things to do in cooler weather is to hike to the peak of Mount Solaro, with its beautiful views of the town of Capri and the bay of Marina Piccola with the Faraglioni, as well as Anacapri. You also see plenty of wintering birds on the island,” says Zanini.

Zanini adds that they are in talks with the island's municipality to consider what it would take to stay open in February and March, traditionally strictly closed off. “It's not as straightforward as you think. There’s a lot of infrastructure that needs to be geared towards the low season: restaurants need to stay open, as do shops, and guides need to be available; it can’t just be the hotel,” he adds.

However, with staying open longer, there’s a real opportunity to engage local communities year-round, not to mention stabilize the hiring pool—and improve work culture. “We’ve already seen the positive impact of a longer season for our partners on the ground and locals in the hospitality and tourism sector,” says Addison, who adds that shifts in travel seasons are far from a fleeting trend. “This pattern for more year-round travel will continue to pick up pace in 2025—and beyond," she says.

Travel specialists are quick to point out that even with some of this rebalancing, summer this year and next will continue to see high demand for travel to—and within—Europe. According to Hayley Berg, chief economist at Hopper, while airfare remains higher than at this time in 2019, 40% of all searches for international trips this summer are to Europe, in line with last year and slightly higher than in 2019.

“Sure, we think that traveler numbers on the Côte d'Azur will smooth out through the year, but summer will certainly remain the festive season—only it will be longer,” says Lucie Weill, owner of wellness retreat Lily of the Valley near St. Tropez , which sees its faire share of packed streets and crowded beaches come summer. Weill adds that the hotel has seen success in extending its season.

For travel specialist Cari Gray of Gray & Co . late requests and a lack of flexibility could mean getting turned away because of a lack of availability. “Whether it’s a visit to the Vatican or dogsledding in Alaska , access is going to be very difficult. And there are only that many high-end lodges in Lapland ,” she says. Addison offers the example of Lake Como , where the best properties can often get booked up a year or two in advance during the busiest summer months. “Knowing that the top hotels and guides are getting booked up and that weather disruptions are increasingly unpredictable, clients who want to commit to the most popular summer hotspots in Europe, like the Greek islands and Sardinia are securing their bookings a year out.”

The Balearic island of Menorca is a charming escape with its rocky coves, white-sand beaches, and green rolling hills.

Ultimately, it’s not about giving up on all the places you love: just about pivoting, even if within the same country. “Why not Menorca instead of Mallorca, with its explosion of fantastic hotels and its great beach front, or Epirus in Northern Greece on the Albanian border with its Stone villages, old-growth forests, and truffle hunts instead of the islands," says Gray.

"In Italy we’re always pushing to discover new areas, even in regions that we’ve been exploring for decades like Tuscany and Umbria because new hotels are opening up regularly,” says Courtney Mundy , a travel specialist at experiential travel experts Butterfield & Robinson.

And, a word of caution for the rising favorites: “Smaller destinations in Iceland & Norway will really need to consider how to manage the higher number of visitors than ever before,” says Addison. “Parts of Iceland are overtouristed,” agrees Sortland, “so, it’s not unreasonable to think that smaller communities in Norway could eventually be at risk, too.” Whether it's through new tourist tax regimens or limits on cruise ship day-trippers to reduce crowding, a shifting tide will need more alert local governments—and as we’re swapping beaches for the mountains or Rome for Stockholm, more responsible travel habits that leave fewer traces behind.

Pope will travel to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore in longest trip of papacy

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis will visit Indonesia, East Timor, Papua New Guinea and Singapore in September, the Vatican announced Friday, confirming the longest trip of Francis’ papacy that is sure to test his health, stamina and mobility.

The Vatican confirmed the Sept. 2-13 visit, saying the 87-year-old pope would visit Jakarta, Indonesia; Port Moresby and Vanimo, Papua New Guinea; Dili, East Timor; and Singapore. Further details will be announced later.

Francis’ health has become a source of increasing concern and speculation, even though the pontiff is able to carry on with a rigorous schedule of meetings at the Vatican and even excursions to local parishes.

Francis, who had part of one lung removed as a young man, had to cancel a planned visit to Dubai late last year after he came down with a bad case of bronchitis. He suffered from respiratory problems all winter and had to curtail his participation in Holy Week events to save his energy for Easter.

Francis has also been using a wheelchair for nearly two years because of bad knee ligaments, and has said that traveling has become increasingly more difficult.

And yet at 11 days, the trip would be the longest of Francis’ papacy, outpacing by a few days some of his long trips to the Americas early on in his 11-year papacy. It will bring the Argentine Jesuit to the world’s most populous Muslim nation, Indonesia, as well as the former Portuguese colony of East Timor, where the Catholic Church wields enormous influence.

There is also a chance of another leg to the trip being added later: This week, the Vatican foreign minister, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, was in Vietnam and discussed a papal visit, Vatican News reported, without providing details.

In a statement announcing the visit, the Indonesian foreign ministry welcomed the visit and recalled that it had originally been scheduled for 2020 but was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The visit of Pope Francis to Indonesia holds significant importance to the Indonesian people, not only for Catholics but also for all religious communities. The visit is also expected to strengthen the message of tolerance, unity and world peace,” the statement said.

Indonesia is home to roughly 242 million Muslims and 29 million Christians — 8.5 million of whom are Catholics — according to a 2022 report by the Religious Affairs Ministry.

East Timor, which today has a population of about 1.2 million people, is Southeast Asia’s only predominantly Christian nation with the exception of the Philippines. According to the 2015 census, 97.6% of East Timor’s population is Catholic.

The visit to East Timor will likely reignite attention over a clergy sex abuse scandal involving its revered independence hero and Nobel Peace Prize winner. The Vatican confirmed in 2022 that it had sanctioned Bishop Carlos Ximenes Belo following allegations that he sexually abused boys there during the 1990s. Belo is believed to now be living in Portugal.

Francis will be the first pope to visit Papua New Guinea since St. John Paul II went there in 1984. The country, in a strategically important part of the South Pacific, has struggled with tribal violence and civil unrest.

John Paul also visited Singapore, in 1986. The country today is home to 395,000 Catholics and Francis in 2022 made its archbishop Singapore’s first cardinal.

In a statement welcoming the visit, Cardinal William Goh, said it “will bring renewed fervor to all Catholics in Singapore, uniting them in faith and mission, especially in these most challenging of times.”

The Vatican has planned only one other papal trip this year — to Belgium to celebrate the anniversary of the country’s Catholic university. Francis has also said he wants to return to his native Argentina , but no plans or dates have been announced.
