There’s no reason for you to not have your favorite games while you enjoy your PULLMANTUR Cruise. Our only request is that should any delay occur due to traffic, breakdowns or any other motive; you bear in mind that our departure time from port will remain the same. Cruises investment holding, royal caribbean group to reorganize pullmantur joint venture.

MADRID – June 22, 2020 – Cruises Investment Holding and Royal Caribbean Group (“RCL”) said they have filed for the reorganization of their Pullmantur Cruceros joint venture (“Pullmantur”, “the Company”) under the terms of Spanish insolvency laws.

Cruises Investment Holding owns 51 percent of the Spanish cruise line, while RCL owns the remaining 49 percent.

Pullmantur’s board of directors determined that the unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic made the action necessary. Pullmantur management notified employees of the decision after filings were made with Spanish authorities.

“Despite the great progress the Company made to achieve a turnaround in 2019 and its huge engagement and best efforts of its dedicated employees, the headwinds caused by the pandemic are too strong for Pullmantur to overcome without a reorganization,” the board stated.

The Company canceled sailings through November 15, 2020. Royal Caribbean Group said that guests already booked to sail on Pullmantur will be offered the option to sail on other RCL brands including Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises. Pullmantur noted that details of the offer will be shared with guests in the near future.

Crew are staffed at minimum maintenance levels on Pullmantur’s three ships and the Company will take care of their safe return home.

RCL noted that all of its assets related to the Pullmantur Cruceros joint venture had been included in the non-cash asset impairment charges reported in their first quarter of 2020 results.

Two Years Later, Here’s What Happened to Pullmantur and its Fleet

In June 2020, Pullmantur Cruceros filed for reorganization under the Spanish laws . Two years later, Cruise Industry News looks into the fate of the Spanish cruise line and its ships.

While initially keeping part of its shore-based team and hoping to resume service with ships from other operators , Pullmantur ended up being shut down last year.

Unable to secure financing for its return, the cruise line was liquidated by its insolvency administrators in July 2021 – a year after first filing for reorganization.

According to the Spanish media, the decision was also based on the pandemic developments, which made it harder to preview when the company could resume regular operations around the world. 

Sovereign Year Built: 1988 Capacity: 2,322 guests Tonnage: 73,192 Status: Scrapped in Aliaga, Turkey

The Sovereign was one of the first ships to be beached for scrapping during the pandemic. As part of Pullmantur’s reorganization process, the 1988-built vessel was returned to the Royal Caribbean Group before being sold to Turkish breakers.

In July 2020, just a few weeks after leaving the company’s fleet, the ship arrived Aliaga Ship Breaking Yard for dismantling .

Horizon Year Built: 1990 Capacity: 1,442 guests Tonnage: 47,000 Status: Laid-up in Greece

Also returned to the Royal Caribbean Group during Pullmantur’s reorganization process, the Horizon remained laid up in Greece.

Instead of joining its fleet mates at the Aliaga breakers as expected , the vessel went to the Elefsis Bay, where it remains anchored along with other cruise ships to this date.

Monarch Year Built: 1991 Capacity: 2,390 guests Tonnage: 73,941 Status: Scrapped in Aliaga, Turkey

In a similar situation, the Monarch arrived at the Aliaga Ship Breaking Yard along with the Sovereign.

Like its sister ship, the former Monarch of the Seas was returned to the Royal Caribbean Group before being sold to Turkish scrapped in July 2020 .

Zenith Year Built: 1992 Capacity: 1,441 guests Tonnage: 47,255 Status: Renamed TSM Singapore after two years laid up in Greece   

After being sold to Peace Boat Organization in 2019 , the Zenith left the Pullmantur fleet a few months before the company filed for reorganization. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the vessel never entered service for its new operators and, instead, spent nearly two years laid up in Greece .

In June 2022, the 1992-built ship was sold once again, receiving the name TSM Singapore before sailing to Asia. Currently docked in Oman, it still faces an uncertain future.

The 1992-built (for Celebrity Cruises ) MV Zenith cruise ship had as Pullmantur fleetmates the liners Monarch , Sovereign and Horizon (sistership).

In 2020, the vessel (IMO number 8918136) was re-flagged from Malta (MMS 256561000) to Panama (MMSI 357062000) and in 2022 was re-flagged from Panama to Palau (MMSI 511100685).

History - construction and ownership

Pullmantur Cruises is a Spanish company (headquartered in Madrid) which founded in 1988 as a subsidiary of the travel agency "Pullmantur" (founded 1971). In 2006, Pullmantur Cruises was acquired by RCCL (Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd) - world's 2nd largest passenger shipping company (after Carnival Corporation ). Currently, RCCL owns 49% as 51% were sold in 2016 to Springwater Capital LLC (2002-founded investment firm). Pullmantur offers high-quality product mainly to Spanish-speaking source market. The company operates mainly in Mediterranean-Canaries regions and by fleet capacity is ranked the largest cruise brand in Spain.

The 1400-passenger ship Zenith was constructed as a sistership to the first newbuild of Celebrity Cruises - MV Horizon. The vessel was ordered in 1989 by Chandris Group (Greek shipowner) for its Celebrity brand. The Inaugural Cruise (maiden voyage) was in 1992 from NYC New York to the Caribbean. Ship's NYC to Bermuda cruise program started in 1996 - the year in which MV Horizon inaugurated Celebrity's Alaskan program. In 2006, for Celebrity Cruises Zenith was homeported in Bayonne (New Jersey, NYC New York) . Also in 2006, RCCL (parent company) acquired Pullmantur Cruises and in 2007 transferred The Zenith to Pullmantur. In 2014, the vessel was transferred to CDF (Pullmantur's brand in France), and in 2017 - back to Pullmantur.

In early-December 2018, Pullmantur Cruceros introduced "Pullmantur Visa" card via a partnership with Bankinter Consumer Finance (specializing in credit cards and consumer loans). Pullmantur Visa allows easier booking and financing over a period up to 18 months. Pullmantur's credit card is for the Spanish market only (Spanish nationals and residents in Spain) and without maintenance fees. All cruise customers who make payments via Pullmantur Visa receive a return up to 6% of the deferred purchases, plus EUR 20 gift voucher when making non-Pullmantur-related purchases.

In January 2020, Zenith left Pullmantur's fleet and all scheduled for 2020 voyages were transferred to Monarch. MS Zenith was bareboat chartered to Peace Boat (1983-founded, an NGO/non-government organization based in Shinjuku / Tokyo Japan ) and had as fleetmate Ocean Dream (originally Carnival Tropicale) .

The vessel (IMO number 8918136) was re-flagged from Malta (MMS 256561000) to Panama (MMSI 357062000).

In mid-September 2020, the company Japan Grace Co Ltd (Peace Boat's cruise operator) announced the charter of a larger-sized ship ( Sun Princess/renamed Pacific World , max passenger capacity 2419) to replace Peace Boat's both current (2020) vessels - Ocean Dream and Zenith. The bigger-sized Pacific World started operations in 2021.

The Zenith's AIS transponder went silent for the first time on July 27, 2020 (at 6:17 UTC). In June 2022, the AIS showed The Zenith docked at Port Lavrion Greece . In July the vessel was sold and renamed "TSM Singapore". On August 11th (at 11:14 UTC) the AIS showed the boat docked at Port Duqm (Oman) and en route to Haiphong (Vietnam). On September 24th, the 30-year-old ship (once again renamed/SINGA) arrived and remained off India's Alang Ship Breaking Yard awaiting beaching and dismantling. The AIS' last transmission was on September 29th (at 0:20 UTC).

Decks and Cabins

MV Zenith staterooms (720 total, in 15 categories) include 153x Inside, 494x Oceanview,, 47x Balcony and 26x Suites. The largest accommodation is the Royale Suite.

The boat has 12 decks , of which 10 are passenger-accessibel and 6 with cabins.

Shipboard facilities and amenities

MV Zenith has two dining venues - Restaurant Caravelle (MDR/Main Dining Room) and Windsurf Cafe Grill (lido buffet restaurant).

The Windsurf Cafe Grill (Buffet Restaurant) provides alternative dining. It is where you'll be able to choose between various dishes to satisfy consumer preferences and tastes. It has an adjacent outdoor grill and provides a wide selection of delicious dishes and an informal setting for relaxing.

The single-level MDR (Restaurant Caravelle) is elegantly appointed and offers good food but expensive wines.

The ship is quite spacious and provides a fine travel experience and tastefully decorated public rooms. Pullmanturs passengers were mainly Spanish-speaking, of mixed ages. The onboard leisure activities include a variety of bars, Casino (gaming lounge), Solarium/sundeck, two outdoor swimming pools (one for kids), as well as three Jacuzzis (outdoor whirlpool hot tubs) and a Fitness/Gym.

Itineraries

Pullmantur Zenith itinerary program was based on Mediterranean roundtrips departing from homeport Marseille France and visiting call ports in Italy, Greece, Malta, Spain, the Adriatic Sea.

To Zenith's 2019 winter program (Canary Islands) was added Madeira Island ( Funchal ) and Morocco ( Agadir ). The Canaries ports were Las Palmas de Gran Canaria , Santa Cruz de Tenerife , Santa Cruz de La Palma , Arrecife Lanzarote . The program (Nov 17, 2019, through March 31, 2020) included a total of 20 itineraries.

In May 2022, Peace Boat canceled its Zenith cruise schedule "due to a change in contract with the shipowner". Peace Boat's program for the ship was originally planned to start in August 2022, and included longer/over 3-month global itineraries out of Japan, plus a 59-night itinerary to the South Pacific islands, Australia and New Zealand.

Pullmantur Zenith Wiki

CDF Zenith cruise ship was built in Papenburg Germany (originally for Celebrity Cruises ) as "MV Zenith". Vessel's sistership is MV Horizon . Both were operated by CDF Croisières de France) - former French cruise line brand and subsidiary managed by Pullmantur Cruises (RCCL's brand in Spain).

Initially, the boat operated roundtrips from homeport Port Everglades/Fort Lauderdale (Florida USA) to island ports in the Caribbean and Bermuda. In 2002, the vessel was flagged Bahamas (registered in Nassau ). In 2007, it was re-flagged to Malta (registered in Valletta ) and transferred from RCI-Royal Caribbean International to Pullmantur for Mediterranean deployment (leaving from French homeports). In 2014, it was transferred to CDF where joined MV Horizon.

The ship’s last Captain (for Pullmantur) was Ivo Botica. Zenith's last Pullmantur cruise was the 7-day "New Year's Eve In The Canary Islands And Madeira" roundtrip from homeport Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The vessel was constructed by Meyer Werft GmbH & Co (in Papenburg, Germany ). The powerplant was based on MAN marine diesel engines (model 9L40/54) with combined output 19,98 MW.

When operated by Peace Boat, Zenith was owned by RCCL (via the subsidiary Zenith Cruise Inc) and managed by Japan Grace Co Ltd (Shinjuku-ku).

Monarch monarch

The Monarch is the largest of Pullmantur's cruise liners. She can hold just over 2700 passengers and has a full range of facilities to keep you entertained during your days at sea. Across the twelve decks you'll find restaurants, buffets, bars and cafes as well as a huge range of entertainment facilities. From the casino to the disco, the fitness centre to the spa; there are plenty of amenities that help this ship live up to her regal name.

Accommodation

From the extravagant Royal Suites to the inside and outside cabins that offer plenty of facilities as standard, your accommodation will welcome you with open arms and invite you to feel at home during your time onboard the ship.

Families can make the most of cabins with upper berths so that up to four people can stay together and larger groups could opt for adjoining rooms.

For added luxury you can choose a suite or cabin that benefits from its own private balcony. This outside space is sure to provide an abundance of fantastic views and will be the perfect place to watch the sun rise or set over the sea.

Holidays. Those days or weeks in which the everyday stresses and hustle and bustle are replaced by a better life. In their place come comforting feelings of peace for your body and mind. Find fulfillment and positive energies as you completely enjoy the wonderful surprises that await you aboard the Monarch. For you, rest is absolute. Your only obligation is to relax. Not having to cook for yourself is part of the package. This task is assigned to Pullmantur's magnificent team overseen by chef Judge Avellan, who has left his mark on all the dishes you can try on board.

Whilst some ships have more dining options than others, you can be assured that the quality and choice of food on offer is the same across the Pullmantur fleet. On each vessel there will be the chance to dine in formal surroundings or more casually, and you can decide to eat in restaurants that stick to regimented seating times or come and go as you please in the many buffet areas. Most of their ships provide the option to eat outside if you wish; meaning you can make the most of those balmy evenings and never miss a drop of the glorious sunshine.

As well as the excellent food choice, there is also a great selection of wine to accompany your meals. This, of course, will be included in your all-inclusive package and their knowledgeable waiters can always recommend something enticing if you are unsure of what to choose.

As well as providing a la carte and buffet options at certain mealtimes, there will also be snacks and light bites available throughout the day to keep you going. Themed evenings are also a common occurrence during which certain areas of the ship are transformed to reflect a specific country of subject.

Life on Board

At Pullmantur they know that throughout all hours of the day there must be a constant balance between work rest and play. That is why, on board their cruise ship, The Monarch, they pack in as much fun as possible for all the family while remembering that sometimes, you want to get away from that too. So, as well as having the opportunity to let it all down, be entertained and have a laugh, they also allow you to take in some quiet time. The perfect balance to allow you to get the best out of your cruise.

Once night time falls, the main entertainment gets into full swing. You can venture into the Broadway Show Lounge to be mesmerised by a magician, made to chuckle by a comedian, or delighted by a range of dance and music performances. Afterwards, it’s time to head to the nightclub and get those feet moving on the dance floor.
