Coding for the Future: Why Protiviti Professionals Support Girls Who Code

girl tour protiviti

My name is Madelyn, I’m 24 years old, and I’m a professional software developer at Protiviti. I spend most of my days writing code to create new features for and fix bugs on clients’ web and mobile applications.

I began programming during my second semester of college as part of an introductory engineering class. Until that point, no one in my life had suggested that I try computer science. I had proudly branded myself as “not a computer person,” but rather someone comfortable in math and art. In that class I found, much to my surprise, that programming was nothing like what I had thought it would be – it was achievable, logical and required a tremendous amount of creativity.

After graduating college and spending a year developing programming skills and growing increasingly amazed by the potential of computers, I decided to take on an active role in the computer science education movement. Children deserve to learn about the world around them, including the guts of technology that run so much of our world – regardless of what career they end up pursuing. The powerful, growing technology field should not be limited to a select group of privileged college students who happen to stumble into a programming class in college.

Over the past few years, I’ve worked with several different nonprofits in the computer science education sphere, each bringing a slightly different approach to the enormous, complex problem of diversity. Since graduation, I’ve narrowed the focus of my tech diversity efforts specifically to the gender gap.  I am proud to have served as a computer science instructor, local club facilitator and curriculum consultant, and am always on the lookout for other opportunities for impact. This year, Protiviti presented such an opportunity – and a very exciting one. In 2019, Protiviti became an official corporate sponsor of Girls Who Code (GWC), an international nonprofit organization aiming to eliminate the gender gap in technology.

Girls Who Code’s mission is ambitious, yet simple: offer learning opportunities to students to deepen their computer science skills as well as their confidence. Through an assortment of GWC education programs, including local after-school clubs and full 7-week Summer Immersion Programs for high school students, girls throughout the country are getting hooked on computer science. The new College Loops program supports program alumni as they transition from high school to college, and from college into the workforce. The idea is that introducing girls to computer science and instilling confidence at a young age will counteract the currently declining number of women in computing .

And it’s working. In the six years since its founding, Girls Who Code programs have reached 185,000 students of all backgrounds in all 50 states . Program alumnae are choosing to major in computer science, or related fields, at 15 times the national average. At this rate, we are on track to reach gender parity in entry-level computer science jobs by 2027.

Protiviti is proud to help Girls Who Code continue their great work in computer science education. In 2019, Protiviti is contributing to Girls Who Code’s Summer Stipend Fund, allowing five students the opportunity to attend a Summer Immersion Program who, for financial reasons, would otherwise not be able to attend. Such Summer Immersion Programs are held each summer in thirteen large cities throughout the United States , including Chicago, New York City, Atlanta, San Francisco, and Seattle. Classrooms of 20 high school students “learn about computer science, gain exposure to tech jobs, and join a sisterhood of girls who are in computer science to become change-makers.”

Internally, Protiviti’s 2019 sponsorship of Girls Who Code is an exciting opportunity to join forces around a powerful cause. Protiviti has offices in several major cities throughout the United States, including ten of the thirteen cities in which GWC currently offers Summer Immersion Programs. Each office has unique capabilities to contribute to its local Girls Who Code community. The Chicago office, one of Protiviti’s largest markets, has an active internal committee dedicated to promoting gender parity in computer science education. The Chicago office is planning a field trip for local Summer Immersion Program students in July of 2019. Students will tour the Protiviti “iNN” (our Chicago innovation hub), attend talks and demos by technical leaders, and participate in an interactive consulting simulation.

Protiviti’s sponsorship of Girls Who Code provides an excellent opportunity to celebrate the most technical areas of the firm. A renewed focus on implementation and developing technical skills within the firm aligns very well with GWC’s highly-technical computer science education programs. Tech jobs are among the fastest growing in the country, and Girls Who Code is working to ensure that girls are given equal access to them – a goal that perfectly complements Protiviti’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Girls Who Code has built the largest pipeline of future female engineers in the United States. Program alumni are exceptional; in just the six years since its founding, Girls Who Code alumni have gone on to win collegiate hackathons, write books, study at prestigious universities and testify before state senate education committees advocating for computer science education. Access to this pipeline of highly-qualified technical candidates is hugely beneficial to technology companies, especially given the ever-increasing demand for technical talent. Current GWC students – Protiviti’s future clients, consultants, and industry leaders – are just now gaining their first insights into the world of technology. Protiviti is proud to support the technical education of so many future professionals, while seeding brand awareness in the process.

I’m honored to be leading the Girls Who Code initiative at Protiviti. I look forward to making the most out of this partnership, watching our impact progress through the pipeline, and creating computer science education opportunities for our future leaders.

"HOTTIESSS GET READY TO COME HAVE SOME FUN WITH ME AT THEE HOT GIRL SUMMER TOUR Get your outfits ready nowww,” she wrote on Instagram.

Megan performed twice in Houston last year . She headlined the March Madness Music Festival at Discovery Green and joined Beyoncé onstage for the first live performances of "Savage" during two shows at NRG Stadium.

It's already been a bus 2024 for the Houston native. Last month, "Hiss" became Megan's  third No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, following "Savage" with Beyoncé and "WAP" with Cardi B. A few weeks later, a group of her fans, known as Hotties, pooled their money to rent a digital billboard with a birthday message for the rapper. It ran for 10 hours off the East Freeway in Jacinto City, near the Anheuser-Busch and Coors breweries.

Megan also performed on "Saturday Night Live" with Reneé Rapp and will  receive Planned Parenthood's Catalyst for Change Award during their annual Spring Into Action gala in New York City.

What will be the setlist for Megan Thee Stallion's Hot Girl Summer tour?

This is the question on everyone's lips. While it's impossible to know what songs Megan Thee Stallion will be playing during her Hot Girl Summer tour until we get the first concert, we can always speculate. It's likely that the rapper will do a mix of beloved hit tracks, like “Body” and “Savage,” as well as newer songs — including potentially some we haven't yet heard.

As a newly-independent artist , Megan has released two songs “Cobra" and “Hiss” under her label Hot Girl Productions, which are both believed to be part of a larger, still-to-be-announced project.

For a while now, Megan Thee Stallion seems to have been teasing even more new music is on the way with multiple snake-inspired visuals . The latest of these teasers arrived just a couple of days after the Hot Girl Summer tour announcement. “You ready HOTTIES 👀🐍,” the star wrote to accompany a video featuring an illustration of a black and white snake motif. “Loading…” the video read as the snake changed its skin to a green and orange pattern.

Olmsted falls vs. springboro girls basketball: bulldogs complete redemption tour, win first state championship.

DAYTON — After a missed opportunity in 2023, Olmsted Falls climbed back to the mountaintop this season.

The Bulldogs were in a one-possession game against Springboro in the fourth quarter of the Division I state championship, which was a first in their dominant postseason run. However, they remained poised as they pulled through to win the program’s first state championship, 52-45.

“This is something that I have been dreaming about as a coach and even for our players,” Olmsted Falls Coach Jordan Eaton said. “Our town has been supporting girls and boys basketball. We really showed up tonight. The girls played phenomenal to get a win, especially after experiencing a loss like last year.”

Olmsted Falls entered the fourth quarter with a 35-33 lead. After Springboro’s Bryn Martin hit a 3-pointer, the Bulldogs went on an 11-4 run led by ball movement, well-timed 3-pointers, free throws and defense.

“We were nervous at times, but we kept our composure and we knew that we had to stay composed together and be able to stay together as a team to get the win,” Olmsted Falls guard Maddie Cerovac said.

In Springsboro’s state semifinal win the day before, Martin scored 38 points. The finalist for Ohio Ms. Basketball was held to 22 in the final.

“(Martin) is not getting shut down, you are just trying to make it really tough over and over. This is one of the best defensive teams that I’ve ever coached,” Eaton said.

Eaton described guard Danielle Cameron as the best player on the floor, as she scored 19 points, grabbed seven rebounds and was 4-for-10 from the 3-point line.

“(Winning a state championship) means more than what words can describe, she said. “Last year, we left in tears and this year, we left in smiles. Ending your career on a high note is everybody’s dream. Overall, it’s the greatest thing in the world.”

Olmsted Falls left Dayton in tears last year, but it's all smiles for Danielle Cameron and the Bulldogs 🐶 @OFalls_Bulldogs @MJournalSports pic.twitter.com/cWkDtu4czV — Mark Perez-Krywany 🤓 (@MarkPerezK10) March 17, 2024

Olmsted Falls often did not rely on one scorer, as Cameron was one of six players to score at least five points (Jesse Simon, Cerovac, Jessica Wolanin, Emma Schaefer, Grace Largent).

The Panthers’ length posed matchup problems, especially in their zone by cutting off passing lanes and blocking five shots. Olmsted Falls did not make its first field goal until Cerovac hit a 3-point shot with 1:09 left in the first quarter.

“It took us the first couple of minutes to get the jitters out. We were able to stay confident. We had to make pass fakes. We started to figure it out and win with this,” Cerovac said.

Cerovac’s shot was quickly followed up by Schaefer to go on a 7-2 run and trail, 11-9, at the start of the second quarter. The Bulldogs made double-digit 3-pointers for the second consecutive tournament game.

Olmsted Falls took its first lead with 6:20 (14-13) remaining in the second quarter. After it led 20-17 at halftime, Olmsted Falls went on an 8-0 run in the third quarter.

Despite the length disadvantage, Olmsted Falls kept pace with Springsboro and was only outrebounded 30-29.

By TOM WITHERS Greg Tribble made two free throws with 4.8 seconds left after he was inexplicably fouled by Kent State’s Julius Rollins, giving Akron a 62-61 win over its bitter rival in the Mid-American Conference championship to earn an NCAA Tournament bid on Saturday night. The second-seeded Zips (24-10) won their fifth MAC title and second in three years. Making it sweeter is that they did it against the Golden Flashes (17-17), the No. 8 seed who knocked off top-seeded Toledo in the quarterfinals. A young woman displays holiday decorations for several women standing around her.

“The Many Lives of Martha Stewart” (CNN, Max)

Produced by CNN and streaming on Max, the four-part docuseries “The Many Lives of Martha Stewart” accompanies the one-woman brand on her journey from model to stockbroker to caterer to lifestyle guru to Queen of All Media to jailbird to Snoop Dogg double act to octogenarian Sports Illustrated swimsuit model. Made without the participation of Stewart — whose voice is nevertheless heard throughout from a deep well of archival clips and interviews — or her ex-husband Andy Stewart — though with comment from plenty of business executives — it’s not a puff piece. Martha’s detour through the justice system takes up an entire episode and change, with her prison stint especially fascinating for being relatively unreported; Martha being Martha, she introduced herself to one sister inmate with a baked apple and somehow produced a flan for her goodbye party. (As Jon Stewart points out in a “Daily Show” clip, she went to jail not for insider trading but for lying about a crime she was never charged with.) Though it recognizes her as a polarizing figure — feminist? anti-feminist? plastic? for real? — this is all in all an admiring account of a widely beloved pioneer, the first female self-made billionaire. — Robert Lloyd

“Mean Girls” (Paramount+)

Though the original “Mean Girls” was a formative title of my millennial childhood, I am aware that a lot of it has aged like milk. Thankfully, the new version , now streaming, not only features the best musical numbers from the stage adaptation but also replaces the first film’s racist stereotypes and sizeism slander with updated punchlines and the overdue overhaul of Janis Ian . Tina Fey and Tim Meadows reprise their roles from the 2004 movie, alongside Jon Hamm, Busy Philipps, Jenna Fischer, Ashley Park and a crop of young Hollywood names. And by the end, I guarantee you’ll find yourself a fan of Reneé Rapp , who plays the enticingly evil Regina George. — Ashley Lee

Taylor Swift, in a bedazzled leotard and matching boots, strides across the stage holding a microphone to her mouth

Taylor Swift’s Eras tour is starting to feel like it contains eras of its own. First it was the lavish, career-spanning road show she launched in early 2023; then it became the blockbuster concert film that bulldozed through movie theaters last fall. Just before Christmas, Swift made the movie available to rent on demand, and now “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” has finally arrived on streaming — specifically Disney+, where it landed late Thursday (for a reported $75-million payday), almost a year to the day after she played her first Eras gig in Arizona.

I was at there on the tour’s opening night and can clearly remember the anticipation rippling through a crowd that had no idea what Swift had put together; I was also at the movie’s premiere at the Grove , where Swift herself took in all 169 minutes as excitedly as one of her fans. The streaming version of the film, which of course Swift is calling “The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version),” boasts a handful of songs not in the theatrical cut and comes as the real-life Eras tour is on a brief hiatus between a series of just-completed Asian dates and a European leg that will extend through August. A weekly chat with actors, writers, directors and more about what they’re working on — and what they’re watching

A man films another man taking a photograph in a field

With photographs — well, one particular photograph — dominating the news cycle this week, and fears about artificial intelligence and deepfakes on the rise, National Geographic’s “Photographer” could hardly be better timed. Premiering Monday, and streaming the next day on Disney+, the six-part docuseries from “Nyad” filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin profiles some of the defining image-makers of our time — including Dan Winters, whose work includes everything from presidential portraits to a six-year stint documenting NASA’s Artemis missions to land the first woman and first person of color on the moon. Winters stopped by Screen Gab recently to discuss the film frame he can’t shake, what he’s watching and more. — Matt Brennan

1. What have you watched recently that you are recommending to everyone you know? I’m a bit late to the party, however I really enjoy “How to With John Wilson” [Max]. I love the fluidity of each episode as they drift from topic to topic, person to person, and reveal strange truths.

2. What is your go-to “comfort watch,” movie or TV show you go back to again and again?

The original “Star Trek” [Paramount+]. I’ve seen each episode many times. I love being transported into that world. I used to watch the original series with my dad on Sundays as a kid. It’s my happy place.

3. Of the other photographers featured in the docuseries, whose work have you become a new fan of (or come to see in a different light) because of it?

The level of wonder in the work of Anand Varma is a profound example of what’s possible through photography. His scientist’s mind and obsessive focus has brought us into worlds heretofore unseen.

4. There’s now a subculture of appreciating single frames from movies and TV shows, from One Perfect Shot to “Succession.” So let me pick your photographer’s brain: What’s a single image from film or TV that you love, or is seared in your mind?

There are multitudes. This may be low-hanging fruit, but one that quickly comes to mind is the first shot of the twins at the end of the hall in “The Shining . ” It is a Diane Arbus reference and absolutely haunts me to this day.
