Why don't they say "Captain on the Bridge" every time a captain enters the bridge?

I only remember it being done in Star Trek V and a season one episode of TNG. What is the protocol for saying it, and which bridge officer should say it?

There is no protocol. This is TV.

They only have to do it once when a new captain of the ship steps on the bridge for the first time and perhaps returning from a long leave of absense.

They use "Admiral on the bridge" in Sat Trek II. They also use "Captain in the bridge" in TNG "Chain of Command" for Captain Jellico.

Because they realized how annoying that would be every episode Kirk or Picard entered the bridge?

It's done in present day so that the person on the bridge who is keeping the log will make an appropriate entry to the log. Presumably in the ST era there are automatic records being kept or somesuch..

Maybe it depends on the actual captain. Jellico, being more strict with military discipline, would probably prefer it if he's always announced when he enters the bridge, Other captains like Kirk and Picard would not be such a stickler for regulations.

Did a quick search with Star Trek Script search. Actually seems it is used most often in DS9 (5 times) and Voyager (7 times, though only 5 of them on the ship Voyager) so, as you can see, the numbers still aren't impressive.

I imagine it would get very tiresome very quick and add absolutely nothing to the story.

I think it depends on the situation--ff the captain has been away for awhile (or even off the ship for a time) or if it's during an alert situation. And even then it may be purely a traditional observation that is totally discretionary. Some captains may not mind or not even pay attention to the custom whenever its done, while others may actually make a point of dispensing with it altogether on their particular ships because they might find it personally unnecessary or even annoying, IMO.

Oh, I gather it's absolutely mandatory and the failure to do so every time a court-martial offense - but on the second month of a five-year mission, everybody just plain stops caring and starts calling the skipper "Bob". Timo Saloniemi

If one wants to apply a real world standard to this, then it's basic leadership. When a captain makes their crew show such deference all day every day, the crew grow tired and eventually resentful of it, which will show at the times it actually matters, like during very important ceremonies in the presence of VIPs, reflecting poorly on themselves and by extension their CO. So, taking on a relaxed habit, not requiring the crew to show such deference 24/7 means on the occasions when it actually is necessary, like at the aforementioned important ceremonies or in the presence of aforementioned VIPs, the crew will engage in the formalities a little more enthusiastically, making themselves and by extension their CO look that much better at the same time.

Star trek: discovery fixed saru’s problem, then repeated the same captain mistake.

With Saru's new role as an Ambassador, Star Trek: Discovery fixes an old problem, but the series makes the same mistake again in Discovery season 5.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

  • Star Trek: Discovery season 5 resolves Saru's role issue but introduces another with Captain Rayner as First Officer.
  • Michael Burnham's decision to make Rayner her Number One doesn't solve the problem of having two Captains on the bridge.
  • The dynamic between Captains and First Officers in Star Trek: Discovery keeps changing each season, adding new layers to the ongoing story.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 seems to fix the problem of Captain Saru's (Doug Jones) role on the USS Discovery's crew, but the series immediately makes the same mistake again with Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie). In Star Trek: Discovery season 4 , Captain Saru voluntarily cedes command of the USS Discovery to the newly-promoted Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), which leaves Star Trek: Discovery with two characters holding the rank of Captain at the same time . Captain Saru gladly acts as Captain Burnham's First Officer during Star Trek: Discovery season 4, but it's not the best use of Saru's skills or rank.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5 , the United Federation of Planets is slowly rebuilding in the wake of the Burn and first contact with Species 10-C. Federation President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) offers the inherently empathic Captain Saru a position as a Federation Ambassador, which would require the Kelpien resign his Starfleet commission. Saru accepts the offer and becomes an Ambassador , which allows him the time to marry his love, President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) of Ni'Var, leaving the position of First Officer aboard the USS Discovery wide open for whomever Captain Burnham should appoint.

Saru’s Star Trek: Discovery Promotion Makes Him Even More Like Spock

Star trek: discovery repeated saru’s mistake with captain rayner, two captains don't need to be on discovery's bridge..

At the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 2 , "Under the Twin Moons", Captain Burnham chooses Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) to be Discovery's new First Officer, which doesn't solve the problem of having two Captains on the bridge. Rayner had been Captain of the USS Antares, but Rayner's command decision in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive", accidentally inspired villains Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) to cause an avalanche that puts civilians in danger while also covering Moll and L'ak's own escape. The subsequent hearing results in Rayner being grounded, and Burnham gives Rayner another chance as her Number One.

Captain Rayner and Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) are old friends, and Vance backed Rayner as Burnham's new Number One.

It's not a terrible choice for Burnham, but it makes an unusual story, since Rayner didn't have to be a Captain to begin with. Captain Burnham's decision to ask Rayner to be Discovery's First Officer comes on the heels of Michael and Saru reflecting on Saru giving Michael a second chance in Star Trek: Discovery season 1, so it's framed as Burnham paying it forward. Michael has the power to keep Rayner out of a forced early retirement by bringing Rayner aboard Discovery , but more importantly, Rayner's no-nonsense, mission-oriented perspective is exactly what Michael Burnham needs in a First Officer. None of this is dependent on Rayner's rank.

Why Star Trek: Discovery Has A First Officer Problem

There are a lot of shakeups in discovery's command structure..

Star Trek: Discovery 's earlier problem, the many Captains of the USS Discovery , was solved with Captain Michael Burnham becoming Discovery's permanent Captain in Star Trek: Discovery season 4, but with Saru's departure to become a Federation ambassador, Star Trek: Discovery renews its First Officer problem. Compared to the more familiar format of earlier Star Trek shows, which had been grounded in the dynamic between their Captains and First Officers, each season of Star Trek: Discovery now has a different pair in command of the USS Discovery , and a different tone, signifying new chapters in the ongoing story of Michael Burnham's character development.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 could have easily solved Discovery 's too-many-Captains problem by choosing a different First Officer from Discovery's crew after Saru resigned his Starfleet commission. Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) has experience as First Officer, having served as Saru's Number One in Star Trek: Discovery season 3, and the USS Discovery also has a wealth of potential First Officers among its bridge crew, most of whom are full Commanders. Captain Rayner is an unknown entity, but maybe a needed one, so while Burnham's surprise pick of Rayner as First Officer may not solve the problem, it does make for an interesting twist to Star Trek: Discovery 's final season.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 streams Thursdays on Paramount+.

‘Star Trek’ Fans Can Now Virtually Tour Every Starship Enterprise Bridge

An interactive web portal explores the vessel’s evolution over nearly six decades

Enterprise bridge view

For decades, many “ Star Trek ” fans have imagined what it would be like to work from the bridge of the starship  Enterprise , the long-running franchise’s high-tech space-exploring vessel. Through various iterations and seasons of the series, created by  Gene Roddenberry in the ’60s, the bridge has remained a constant, serving as the backdrop for many important moments in the show’s 800-plus episodes.

Now, die-hard Trekkies and casual watchers alike can virtually roam around the Enterprise’s bridge to their heart’s content, thanks to a sophisticated and highly detailed new  web portal that brings the space to life.

The site features 360-degree, 3D models of the various versions of the Enterprise , as well as a timeline of the ship’s evolution throughout the franchise’s history. Fans of the show can also read detailed information about each version of the ship’s design, its significance to the “Star Trek” storyline and its production backstory.

The new web portal's interface

Developed in honor of the “Star Trek: Picard”  series finale , which dropped late last month on Paramount+, the portal is a collaboration between the Roddenberry Estate, the Roddenberry Archive and the technology company OTOY. A group of well-known “Star Trek” artists—including Denise and Michael Okuda , Daren Dochterman, Doug Drexler and Dave Blass—also supported the project.

“Through new technology, we can bring audiences back in time as if they were there on set during the making of ’Star Trek,’ providing a window into new dimensions of the ‘Star Trek’ universe,” says Jules Urbach, OTOY’s CEO, in a  statement .

YouTube Logo

The voice of the late actress  Majel Roddenberry , who played the Enterprise ’s computer for years, will be added to the site in the future. Gene Roddenberry  died in 1991 , followed by Majel Roddenberry  in 2008 ; the two had been married since 1969.

The portal’s creators also released a short video , narrated by actor  John de Lancie , exploring every version of the Enterprise ’s bridge to date, “from its inception in  Pato Guzman ’s 1964 sketches, through its portrayal across decades of TV shows and feature films, to its latest incarnation on the Enterprise-G , as revealed in the final episode of ‘ Star Trek: Picard ,’” per the video description. Accompanying video interviews with “Star Trek” cast and crew—including William Shatner , who played Captain Kirk in the original series, and Terry Matalas , a showrunner for “Star Trek: Picard”—also explore the series’ legacy.

star trek captain on the bridge

The interactive, 3D bridge models contain a surprising level of detail, right down to the consoles and turbolifts. The site, however, has so far been hit or miss for users, suggesting that the team behind it may still be working out a few of the technical kinks, reports the  Verge ’s Sean Hollister. And as Kyle Barr writes for  Gizmodo , one big downside is that the models don’t contain any “Star Trek” characters, who he says are “the beating heart of the show and its ideals.”

“Sitting in the captain’s chair, with all the stations empty beside you,” he writes, “is enough to make one wistful.”

William Shatner, Captain on the Bridge

By katherine cusumano, august 10, 2015.

ABOVE: WILLIAM SHATNER. PHOTO COURTESY OF MANFRED BAUMANN.

Mixed metaphors abound in Chaos on the Bridge , William Shatner’s recent hour-long documentary about the production of Star Trek: The Next Generation . Moving from a poker game played close to the chest to scenes straight out of the Wild West, Chaos on the Bridge reconstructs the turbulent first years of the Star Trek sequel series and the franchise’s embattled creator Gene Roddenberry. Animated sequences caricaturing the “chaos” of the show’s production break up the sequence interviews with those closest to Roddenberry. It’s an appropriate blend of images reflecting the behind-the-scenes conflict that defined efforts to get a reboot of the beloved series off the ground.

Though his role as James T. Kirk, captain of the Starship Enterprise of Star Trek in the original series, is a thing of the past, Shatner has remained engaged with the show and its various spinoffs. Chaos on the Bridge reunites the veteran writers, producers, and cast members of the series, many of whom Shatner also counts as close friends. He interviews familiar faces from The Next Generation , including Jonathan Frakes, Patrick Stewart , Gates McFadden, Diana Muldaur, and Denise Crosby, attempting to shed light on what exactly made those inaugural seasons in the late 1980s such a challenge to create.

At the center of it all is writer-producer Gene Roddenberry, who died in 1991 just four years after The Next Generation went on air. The portrait that emerges of Roddenberry is that of a brilliant but eclectic mind clinging for dear life to the greatest work of his career—the original Star Trek series. The Next Generation was Roddenberry’s search for a utopic future (series writers lament his conviction that crew members of the Enterprise could not have any conflict, making a compelling drama difficult) in a less-than-utopic present. And behind Roddenberry is his wild, overreaching lawyer Leonard Maizlish, a character who must be seen to be believed.

Now at 84, nearly 50 years after he wrapped on Star Trek , Shatner’s Twitter account is currently overrun with images of My Little Ponies photoshopped in the likeness of Captain Kirk. (The octogenarian possesses a social media presence that would put any millennial to shame.) But it’s of no relation to Chaos on the Bridge —instead, the ponies, many of whom sport standard-issue Starfleet uniforms, are part of an online scavenger hunt for charity organized by Supernatural alum Misha Collins. Shatner’s team placed second to Collins’s in the contest last year, but he has proved his renewed investment in this year’s competition. Last Thursday, he donned a Civil War-era costume as one of the scavenger hunt’s challenges, he said, and a few days ago Justin Bieber started following him on Twitter at Shatner’s request. (Is he a Belieber? “I’m an agnostic,” he reports.) We phoned in to speak with him shortly after the release of Chaos on the Bridge to discuss Roddenberry’s legacy, antics on the Star Trek set, and the late Leonard Nimoy.

KATHERINE CUSUMANO: I want to start with a pretty easy question—what’s your first memory of Star Trek ?

WILLIAM SHATNER: [ laughs ] You think that’s an easy question, do you? Well, I guess the early memory was the first thing I’d heard about it. Gene Roddenberry called me on the phone, and asked me to take a look at a pilot that they had made with another actor, that they called Star Trek . NBC Network didn’t want to put it on the air, but they liked the idea sufficiently that they asked him to re-cast it, and he called me about playing the part of the captain.

CUSUMANO: There is a scene in Chaos on the Bridge when the series producers recall how Gene didn’t originally think that Patrick Stewart could be your successor. What was your impression of the “new Captain Kirk”? Did you know Patrick Stewart before they were casting him?

SHATNER: At that time, I had moved on, and I heard that they were going to do another series and they were casting Patrick Stewart, whose name I didn’t know. He was a wonderful actor at that time, but I don’t think his reputation as a wonderful actor had preceded him. He was an unknown quantity all the way around—both the way he looked and the way he performed.

CUSUMANO: How did you react when you heard that Star Trek would be revived for The Next Generation ?

SHATNER: Well, I was glad, and there was an element of sadness that it had gone on without me. But at the same time, you know, I had a really great run with it, and I was alright, but I certainly was sad to see it go.

CUSUMANO: What made you want to make this film? How did you realize that you had a story here?

SHATNER: Well, I had been working with a gentleman by the name of Maurie Hurley, and he’s the one, the grey-haired guy in the film who keeps saying everything was “wacky-doodle.” He’s a madcap Irishman, a very talented writer, and I had worked with him for several years on various things. I had acted in some, directed some, and had written with him on some. We were really good friends. I loved him very much. He’s recently passed on. He would tell me these terrible stories of what was going on with this television show, and finally one day I said, “That’s going to make a great documentary. Will you sit down and let me interview you?” He’s the heart and soul of Chaos on the Bridge . It’s his information and his dynamic personality that make the show.

CUSUMANO: You did not start watching The Next Generation until you started working on this documentary. What brought you to it?

SHATNER: First, Maurie Hurley—and then I had to acquaint myself with what everyone was doing, the actors and all. Most of those actors on The Next Generation are friends of mine. I watched some stuff, but of course not seven seasons.

CUSUMANO: I have actually seen all of it.

SHATNER: Come on!

CUSUMANO: I have. You should definitely get through the whole thing.

SHATNER: I will, in due time. My time is shorter than yours, though.

CUSUMANO: Is the Roddenberry described to you in the documentary consistent with the man that you knew?

SHATNER: Well, Gene Roddenberry was a conflicted man in many ways. He was a writer, primarily, and writers are a solitary bunch. They sit at a keyboard and type away, and they get things out of their imagination. And then there’s a producer part that is the exact opposite. You have to put out the emotional fires, and you’ve got to be gregarious and schmooze and talk. That’s the exact opposite of the writer. When you make the writer a producer, so he’s a writer-slash-producer, you’ve got a real conflict in human terms. And that was part of Gene’s conflict. The problems they had on Chaos on the Bridge are problems of production and people. This machine that works to turn out a segment of television every week—it usually takes seven or eight days, so you’re always behind once you’re on the air, you’re always losing time—it’s a meat grinder, and that meat grinder pushes everybody under. It’s just a matter of when and how. The tensions and the anxieties and the stresses are so much in order to make a good hour of television every week, and that’s what I’m trying to delineate on Chaos on the Bridge , and I certainly felt it on the Star Trek I knew.

CUSUMANO: In the documentary, it seems like he really desperately wanted to present a utopia in The Next Generation . What is your view of the future? Where do you fall on the utopia-dystopia spectrum?

SHATNER: I’m on the other end of that pole, unfortunately. I think that we have so much inertia about correcting the ills of the world. I love the theory of Gaia, which is the earth is a living entity, and we’re little bugs of Gaia, and Gaia’s going to have a fever soon and shrug us all off.

CUSUMANO: Jonathan Frakes mentions that Patrick Stewart was not super impressed by the cast’s various antics on set. Do you remember any similar instances on the set of the original series?

SHATNER: Yeah, we goofed around quite a bit. Although I must say that Leonard, playing the serious part of Spock, stayed in character as long as he could, so my job in life was to try and crack him up. I took that very seriously. So I played as many practical jokes on him as I could. We goofed it up quite a bit on the original set.

CUSUMANO: Did he crack?

SHATNER: Every so often, both his eyebrows went up.

CUSUMANO: You are also working on a book about him. How is that going?

SHATNER: It’s going very well. I had a show on called Raw Nerve —I interviewed him then, and got some wonderful stories from him. Even earlier than that, I did an album called Mind Meld , in which I interviewed him exclusively. I’m looking at all the material that I have on him, and it’s quite an in-depth study of a lovely man. I’ll be done with it in two to three months.

CUSUMANO: You have also been pretty vocal about wanting to get back on board with some of the more recent incarnations of Star Trek . Are you going to be in the next film?

SHATNER: No, I will not be. Not that I wouldn’t want to be—I just don’t know how they would rationalize the difference in time and space.

CUSUMANO: They made it work with Leonard, so maybe there’s a spot for you.

SHATNER:  I said to Leonard, “You know you’re old when you go back in time and you’re still old.”

Star Trek documentary Chaos on the Bridge: How Patrick Stewart became Captain Picard

Jessica Derschowitz is EW's Digital Features Director. She's based in New York City and you can follow her on Twitter @jessicasara for lots of thoughts on movies, TV, Broadway, running, and other things she likes.

star trek captain on the bridge

What did it initially take to get Patrick Stewart aboard the Starship Enterprise ? Among other things, a transatlantic trip for a toupee.

William Shatner’s documentary, Chaos on the Bridge, explores the controversial creation of Star Trek: The Next Generation , and a new exclusive clip reveals how Stewart landed the role of Captain Picard.

As Stewart and others explain, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry didn’t think a bald Englishman could play “the new Captain Kirk” and initially fought the notion of Stewart even reading for the part. When it came down to final casting and Stewart read for the studio, Roddenberry had him do it in a wig — one that had to be shipped from England to Los Angeles.

Ultimately, Roddenberry came around to Picard being bald (since hair “doesn’t mean anything in the 25th century”) and Stewart got the job.

The Captain's Chair on Star Trek: A Seat of Command

In the vast expanse of science fiction, few television shows have achieved the enduring popularity and cultural impact of the original Star Trek series, which premiered in 1966. Among the many elements that are memorable about the show is the iconic Captain's Chair.

Star Trek Captain's Chair

Designed by the show's art director, Matt Jefferies, the chair was actually modified from a standard office seat that was widely used in the 1960s. Jefferies adapted and enhanced the seat to create the commanding look suitable for a starship captain.

Centrally positioned on the bridge of the USS Enterprise, the chair was elevated on a platform to emphasize the captain's authority, while also ensuring that he had a clear view of the entire bridge and crew members. It was futuristic in appearance, and it had controls on the armrests which allowed the captain to interact with some of the ship's systems.

What made this chair truly special was the way it was used by Captain Kirk, portrayed by the charismatic William Shatner. Kirk's confident posture and decisive actions while seated in the chair became synonymous with his leadership style. Whether issuing orders in the heat of battle or contemplating ethical dilemmas, Kirk's presence in the chair was magnetic.

Interestingly, the original Captain's Chair is now a part of the Smithsonian's collection at the National Air and Space Museum in the United States, where it is displayed as a significant piece of television history.

The Captain's Chair is more than just a piece of furniture. Its journey from a simple office chair to a cultural icon is a testament to the power of human creativity and imagination.

Yes the Captains chair is certainly iconic, the slightly upgraded version for Strange New Worlds is a very nice callback to it as well. It's also good to see the controls close-up in the Court Martial episode and Ben Finneys naughty tampering of the evidence. Live long and prosper Gigi :)

Star Trek Fleet Command Codes (April 2024)

For those starting out or for those who just want an extra boost, codes in Star Trek Fleet Command can be redeemed to give you a few extra items. The game is a mobile and PC game that allows you to recruit various factions and officers to form your crew, build up a fleet of various ships, explore the Star Trek universe, and build up a starbase . The game has a lot of elements that players of mobile games will be familiar with, but all set within the world of Star Trek.

Star Trek Fleet Command is based on the popular multimedia franchise , and players will be familiar with the ships, systems, and crew members they can recruit. However, building up all these various items and recruiting people will take a lot of effort. This can be reduced by using various codes to get some items for free , and the active codes for April 2024 will be listed below.

Star Trek Fleet Command Adds Captain Picard & More TNG Content

All codes for star trek fleet command in april 2024.

Codes are free to use for everyone and can come with big rewards such as unlocking characters in Star Trek Fleet Command . However, in some cases, there might be requirements before you get to use them . These requirements will be listed with each code so players know when they can be used. Currently, there are three active codes, although this may change month to month.

Codes should be entered without any extra spaces with the proper capitalization. Enter the code exactly as it is represented in the table to make sure you receive the correct rewards.

To use these codes, players must have downloaded the game and completed the tutorial . Once you are able to interact with the game freely, you should be able to enter any codes that do not have level requirements. If they do, you will have to reach that level before you can use the code.

To enter the code, look to the upper right part of the screen and find the box icon with the word “claim” on it. After that, find the icon with the word “Redeem” near it to take you to the game's website , which features the game's store and news from Star Trek Fleet Command .

This is where it gets a little more complicated, as players will have to make sure the game and their registration on the website are synced . Log in or make a new account and make sure that you are also logged in within the game as well to make sure that all data is syncing between the two. Then copy one of the codes into the input field next to a yellow “Redeem” button.

Once you have entered it and clicked on the button, you should see the rewards pop, and upon relaunching your game, the rewards should show up, and you should be able to use them . If they do not appear, make sure your data is synced, that you entered the code correctly, and that you have the requirements necessary for each code. And that should give you everything you need to redeem April’s codes in Star Trek Fleet Command .

An early 25th century electronic boatswain's whistle

In nautical terms , the boatswain 's whistle or bosun's whistle was a small whistle that was used aboard old sailing ships , usually to gain the attention of the crew . Such devices were used aboard Starfleet vessels during the 23rd , 24th , and 25th centuries .

Constitution -class starships in the 23rd century used the sound of a boatswain's whistle to open shipboard communications via the ship's intercom . ( Star Trek: The Original Series ; ENT : " In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II ")

Aboard starships into the 24th century, it was normally used when an honored guest came aboard or at a crewmember 's funeral , when their body was released into space . The shrill whistle was often played before a ship-wide or open frequency communication , usually made by the captain or another senior officer . ( TNG : " Where No One Has Gone Before ", " Hide And Q ") The actual tone of the call has varied, as some captains preferred the distinctive notes of the electronic type over the more traditional metal whistle. ( TNG : " Lower Decks ")

In 2165 of an alternate timeline , a boatswain's whistle was blown by a crewman aboard Enterprise NX-01 , announcing the arrival of Jonathan Archer , T'Pol , and Phlox on the ship. ( ENT : " Twilight ")

In 2257 , the electronic signal was sounded as Captain Christopher Pike arrived on the bridge of the USS Enterprise along with an announcement of "Captain on the bridge." ( DIS : " Such Sweet Sorrow ")

Here’s who was really steering (or not) the 95,000-ton ship when it ploughed into the Key Bridge this week

Baltimore bridge collapse

The expert pilots who navigate massive ships in and out of Baltimore’s port must often maneuver with just 2 feet (0.6 meter) of clearance from the channel floor and memorize charts, currents and every other possible maritime variable.

The highly specialized role — in which a pilot temporarily takes control of a ship from its regular captain — is coming under the spotlight this week.

Two pilots were at the helm of the cargo ship Dali about 1:25 a.m. Tuesday when it lost power and, minutes later,  crashed into a pillar  of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the bridge to collapse and kill six construction workers.

While the incident will undoubtedly raise larger questions about ship and port safety protocols, so far there is no indication the pilots on the Dali did anything wrong given the immediate situation they faced. The ship sent out a mayday call, which gave just enough time for authorities to close the bridge to traffic and likely prevented further deaths. The lead pilot also dropped an anchor, issued steering commands and called for help from nearby tugboats, according to a preliminary timeline outlined by the National Transportation Safety Board.

But in the end, maritime experts say, there was likely nothing the pilots could have done to stop the 95,000-ton ship from ploughing into the bridge.

“It’s completely their worst nightmare,” said Capt. Allan Post, the deputy superintendent of the Texas A&M Maritime Academy in Galveston. “It is terrifying to even imagine not being able to control the vessel, and knowing what’s going to happen, and not being able to do anything about it.”

Pilots are local knowledge experts, and they give commands to the bridge team for rudder and engine settings, and for what course to steer, Post said.

U.S. pilots are typically graduates of maritime academies and have spent many years at sea before they join a lengthy apprentice program to learn every aspect of a local area, including memorizing charts, he said.

“A ship’s captain is a general practitioner, if I was to use a medical term,” Post said. “And a pilot would be a surgeon.”

Ship pilots have been working in the Chesapeake Bay since 1640, and the Association of Maryland Pilots currently has 65 active pilots on its books.

The association describes on its website how the bay throws up unique challenges, including that pilots must maneuver container ships that can sit nearly 48 feet (14.6 meters) deep in the water through the main Baltimore shipping channels, which are only 50 feet (15.2 meters) deep.

“Pilots are on the front lines protecting the environmental and ecological balance of the Chesapeake Bay by ensuring the safe passage of these large ships that carry huge quantities of oil and other hazardous materials,” the association says on its site.

The association, which didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, has issued a statement thanking first responders to the bridge accident and saying its members’ thoughts and prayers are with the families of victims.

There is lucrative pay for pilots because the job comes with plenty of responsibility and risk, Post said.

On a typical day, he said, a pilot might make multiple trips. He or she would be assigned to one ship leaving a port, Post said, and then disembark to board a second, inbound ship.

He said that of the two pilots assigned to the Dali, one would have been in command, with the second able to assist if necessary. He said that, typically, the ship’s regular captain would also have been on the bridge, along with one of the watch officers and a couple of other crew.

The NTSB timeline indicated the pilots had less than five minutes from when they first lost power to when the ship struck the pillar.

“They had very little time from the start of the incident until the time they were upon the bridge,” Post said. “I believe the pilots did what they could with the abilities that they had onboard the ship at the time to avoid the collision.”

‘Star Trek’ Fan Leaves Behind a Collection Like No One Has Done Before

When Troy Nelson died, his shelves were filled to the rafters with memorabilia from the popular franchise. Soon, the massive collection will be boldly going, going, gone.

Editors’ Note, April 2, 2024: After publication, The Times learned that Troy and Andrew Nelson were named in a civil lawsuit filed in Pierce County Superior Court in 1998, in which they were accused of molesting three disabled adults in a state-licensed facility that they operated. After a six-week jury trial, Washington State was ordered to pay $17.8 million to the plaintiffs. The state said it intended to appeal but missed the deadline and paid the victims. The Nelson brothers denied the allegations and were never criminally charged.

Troy Nelson and his younger brother Andrew were almost inseparable.

The two youngest of six, they were born two years apart. They lived together in their childhood home in Bremerton, Wash., for more than half a century. Near their home, there is a park bench on which they carved their initials as young boys.

The Nelson brothers never married or had children. They worked together at the same senior home. They even once, as teenagers, dated the same girl at the same time while working different shifts at the same pizza shop. This lasted a week until they realized it.

“Two parts of one body,” Evan Browne, their older sister, said of their relationship in an interview.

On Feb. 28, Andrew Nelson, who had been treated for cancer for years, went to feed the chickens and ducks that were gifts from Ms. Browne to her brothers. He had a heart attack and died. He was 55. Just hours later, Troy Nelson, who was stricken with grief, took his own life. He was 57.

“He had talked about it before,” Browne, 66, said, tearfully. “He said, ‘Hey, if Andrew goes, I’m out of here. I’m checking out.’ Andrew would say the same thing, and then it really happened .”

Figurines of various characters in the Star Trek series stand on shelves. A statuette of Captain Kirk is among those on the top shelf.

What Troy Nelson left behind has become a sensation. After his death, family members posted pictures on social media of his massive — and, really, the keyword is massive — collection of “Star Trek” memorabilia, which have now been shared thousands of times.

The items took up two living rooms and a bedroom, all lined with bookshelves, according to Elena Hamel, one of the brothers’ nieces. The centers of the rooms were lined with additional bookshelves — all packed to the brim — to create aisles. There were jewelry cabinets serving as display cases.

The shelves contained action figures. Dolls. Models of ships. Posters. Ornaments. Lunchboxes. Legos. Several toy phasers and tricorders. (For non-Trek fans, the phaser is a weapon, and a tricorder is, essentially, a fancy smartphone.) Multiple “Star Trek” lamps. (Yes, there are “Star Trek” lamps.) Trading cards. Comic books. Trek-themed Geeki Tikis (stylized tiki mugs). Life-size cutouts of famous characters. A life-size captain’s chair.

While it’s impossible to account for every private collector in the world, Troy Nelson’s collection is almost assuredly among the largest — if not the largest.

The last additions to the collection came in the final weeks of his life: Stuffed rabbits in “Star Trek” uniforms. “I’ve never seen a collection that size,” said Russ Haslage, the president of the International Federation of Trekkers , a “Star Trek”-themed nonprofit that Haslage founded with Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the franchise.

Haslage’s organization opened in 2020 a “Star Trek” museum in Sandusky, Ohio, that has received donations of memorabilia from estates. Those collections “pale in comparison” to Mr. Nelson’s, he said. (Haslage has reached out to the family to ask about donations from the collection.)

The older brother’s love of “Star Trek” began with the original series, which he’d watch with his siblings.

“It was our dinner meal,” Ms. Browne said. “When we had dinner, we were sitting in front of ‘Star Trek.’”

Troy Nelson began collecting in the late-1970s. His first acquisition was a model version of the Starship Enterprise. Then came Star Trek conventions. Why the franchise was such a draw to him remains a mystery to his family.

“I really can’t say. I mean, other than the fact that he was brainwashed with it at dinner time,” Browne said, laughing. “That sounds ridiculous. When we grew up, it’s like, ‘Dinner is at this time. And if you don’t get here at this time, you don’t get dinner.’ So it might’ve been a comfort for him .”

Troy Nelson would often monitor sites like eBay for items he didn’t have. On several occasions, he would express frustration on losing out on an item before being able to bid on it. Until he found out the reason.

“Andrew already got it for him,” Ms. Browne recalled.

Obsessive “Star Trek” fandom has long become an indelible part of pop culture, especially as the franchise — which has spawned several television series, movies, novels and comics — has been a long-running institution. There have been documentaries that have studied the subject, such as “Trekkies” in 1997. It’s been lampooned on “The Simpsons,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Family Guy,” and become a story line in an episode of “The West Wing,” among many others. For dedicated fans, accruing collectibles isn’t uncommon.

“When you collect these things, you’re closer to that genre that you enjoy so much,” Haslage said. “When I first started in 1979, I was grabbing everything I could get my hands on because it was cool, and it was a piece of the whole ‘Star Trek’ mythos. If you have these pieces, you’re a part of that universe in some way.”

It turns out that collecting is a pursuit that runs in the family.

Andrew Nelson collected mall swords, Ryobi-branded tools and statues of warrior women, like Xena, the warrior princess .

Browne’s house has a wall with thousands of smashed pennies and her living room windows are full of glass sugar and creamer bowls.

Browne’s father, Bud Peers, collected salt and pepper shakers, guns and knives. Troy and Andrew’s father, Norman Nelson, collected scrap metal and wood.

Hamel has 17 Christmas trees, all fully decorated with separate themes.

Browne’s son, Michael, who is 36, collects anything and everything related to black bears.

“ When you have a large collection like that and it’s displayed like that,” Hamel said, “and it’s something that is important to you, it’s often really calming to be in a space like that. It’s just all the things that you love. It’s soothing.”

As far as Browne knew, Troy had no history of mental illness or any previous suicide attempts. After Andrew died, she received a distraught and frantic call from Troy with the news. She told him that she was on her way.

Ms. Browne said she called him when she got to the Tacoma Bridge. No answer. And then again, at the Manette Bridge. No answer. When she reached their home, the back door was open. And then she found him. The phone call was the last time they spoke.

Troy Nelson did not leave a note, but did leave some things meticulously arranged by his computer, including a key to the house, burial plans for the two brothers, and bills.

“ I don’t know really what I thought,” Ms. Browne said. “All I could do was just scream.”

The Nelson family is boxing up Troy’s “Star Trek” collection to prepare it for auction. Andrew’s ashes will be placed in an urn carved in the likeness of the supermodel Bettie Page . (He was a fan.) Troy’s ashes will be placed in a “Star Trek” lunchbox.

If you are having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline or go to SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources for a list of additional resources.
