The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is an expansive network of more than 2,900 individual reefs that stretch from Cape York in the north to Lady Elliott Island in the south. Covering a staggering 348,000 km2, this marine park is home to a wide variety of fringing and barrier reefs, continental islands, coral cays, and 70 distinct bio-regions, making it the most diverse ecosystem on the planet. Port Douglas is particularly renowned for its beautiful coral cays and islands, as well as its close proximity to some of the most breathtaking outer edge reefs.

Whether you're a seasoned swimmer or a non-swimmer, young or old, there's a way for everyone to marvel at the stunning beauty of the Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas. With a variety of tour options available, it's easy to find a way to experience the reef that's perfect for you. Don't miss out on the chance to witness this natural wonder up close.

Daintree Rainforest & Cape Trib

Daintree Rainforest & Cape Trib

A very beauitful and special part of the world, the Daintree is certainly not to be missed. This remote area is situated north of Port Douglas and has the largest continuous area of tropical rainforest on the Australian continent. Along the coastline north of the Daintree River, the tropical rainforest grows right down to the edge of the sea where fringing reef is met on the shoreline, this is commonly referred to as 'where the Rainforest meets the Reef'.`

Getting there is all part of the adventure. You can either take a fully guided 4WD Safari, or choose to self drive and explore this pretty region at your own leisurely pace. The journey to the Daintree travels along the Cook Highway north of Port Douglas and features beautiful scenery ranging from secluded palm fringed tropical beaches, hidden coves and rugged headlands to the rich green of lush sugar-cane fields and rainforest covered mountains.

The Daintree River ferry is the gateway to the Daintree Coast and Cape Tribulation, and is the only cable ferry operating within tropical Australia.

Once over the river there are many natural attractions to visit including rainforest walks, freshwater swimming holes and remote beaches. There are also plenty of adventure activities that take place such as sea kayaking, horse riding, jungle surfing, snorkelling, night walks and more.

Guided tours depart daily from Port Douglas, and there are plenty of accommodation options should you wish to stay longer and immerse yourself in the rainforest experience. Our consultants would be more than happy to help tailor a unique rainforest package to suit.

Kuranda Train & Skyrail

Kuranda Train & Skyrail

The Kuranda Train & Skyrail is one of the most sought after trips in Far North Queensland. The journey to and from Kuranda Village offers two very different experiences combining, history, heritage, rainforest and environment. Kuranda Village has been operating as a tourist destination since the 1970's with the famous Kuranda Markets being the drawcard, and which are still drawing visitors today.

The first operation of the Kuranda Train commenced in 1936 and the Skyrail Cableway, a world first for viewing the rainforest in a safe and environmentally way, commenced operation in 1995.

Time spent in Kuranda Village will allow you to explore the variety of market stalls inside the Original Markets and Heritage Markets, take a rainforest walk or enter the various wildlife attractions within the village.

There are also options to add on various elements to your day including Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, Rainforestation, Birdworld, Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Kuranda Koala Gardens or Hartleys Croc Park.

Climate & Seasons

island tours from port douglas

Port Douglas has a tropical climate with hot summers and warm winters. Between the months of November to May our temperatures are warm to hot with high humidity.Perfect Weather at Low Island

Our rainfall peaks in the months of Feb, March and April, with the wettest month of the year typically being February. Although its wet, it brings relief from the humidity and the rainforests are just spectacular with waterfalls in full flow.

Our winter months are generally dry and clear and a popular time for visitors as we are enjoying warmer weather than most other parts of the country.

Mossman Gorge Guide

As we are a destination renowned for World Heritage Listed Rainforest, no journey to Cairns would be complete without a rainforest experience. Travelling north up the scenic Cook Highway is the Daintree National Park which comprises of two sections - Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation, covering an expanse of more than 1,200 sq km.

Mossman Gorge is renowned for its crystal-clear waters that cascade over granite boulders, Indigenous culture and spectacular rainforest walks. Most tour itineraries include a visit to Mossman Gorge.

Beyond Mossman is the Daintree River, famous for its boat cruises, croc spotting and bird watching. Once across the Daintree River the Cape Tribulation section of Daintree National Park then stretches from Cow Bay to the Bloomfield River, covering 17,000 ha of coastal range.

Cape Trib beach is fringed with the increasingly rare littoral (beachside) rainforest and interesting fringing reefs, and is renowned as the place where where two spectacular World Heritage sites meet - the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef.

This area of rainforest is a hive of activity from bush walking, kayaking and horse riding treks to snorkelling, exotic fruit tastings and 4WD safaris. Accommodation is readily available, and it is highly recommend to spend at least one night in the rainforest to experience the closeness of nature and the wonders of this ancient land.

Self Drive Port Douglas

island tours from port douglas

Port Douglas is a spectacular one hour drive north of Cairns along one of the most scenic coastal roads in Australia, featuring amazing views of rainforest covered mountains on one side, and the Coral Sea on the other.

Rex Lookout is one of many highlights along the way with views along the ranges back towards Cairns. Hiring a car gives you the freedom to explore the region at your own pace and go wherever your heart desires.

You can visit all the best attractions at your own leisurely pace, or explore further afield in our surrounding regional areas such as the Atherton Tablelands, Daintree & Cooktown. Most roads are sealed, so unless you are planning to go to Cooktown via the Bloomfield Track, you will not need a 4WD.

If hiring a car it is possible to make your own way to our various attractions around the region. Kuranda is approx a 1 hour drive south from Port Douglas, and up the Kuranda Range, however if you don't want to miss out on the Train & Skyrail experience then we can organise a bus transfer to return you to your vehicle at the end of the day, as the Skyrail Terminal and Kuranda Train Station are in two seperate locations.

Wildlife Habitat at Port Douglas makes for a lovely half day out for the family, especially if you add on the Breakfast with the Birds. Afterwards wander off breakfast around the park, then perhaps enjoy an afternoon of shopping along Macrossan Street.

A visit to Mossman Gorge is a must, and the kids will love Hartleys Crocodile Adventures located just 25 minutes from Port Douglas on the Cook Highway. You can arrive at anytime of the day to the wildlife & national parks.

One of the best experiences of my life. The snorkelling was sensational. The small number of people on the boat made this trip very special, we had personal interaction with Steve and Charlotte. Low Isles Island & Snorkelling Tour

Join us for a snorkelling experience at a secluded island at the best times of day….early morning and afternoon. Arriving at Low Isles after a 30 minute journey, guests will explore the coral reef and its inhabitants without the crowds.

You get 2.5 hours to snorkel and explore this picturesque coral cay, a similar amount of time as some full day tours have at the island. Snorkel in the calm lagoon or view the reef from our glass bottom boat, Calypso’s crew will provide tours for guests to learn and appreciate the incredible Great Barrier Reef. Access to the reef is very easy, either from the back of the vessel or from the beach as the reef hugs close to the island.

On our two departures daily*, guests can access the island** and explore the sandy paths winding through the vegetation. See first hand the historical Lighthouse, the Lighthouse Keeper’s home and the Weather Station where local weather data is collected. Bird life found here is spectacular, with many sea birds breeding and nesting in the vegetation and on the ground.

This tour is perfect for visitors who have limited time and want to explore the picturesque Low Isles on the Great Barrier Reef.

What is the difference between Outer Reef and Low Isles?

Low Isles is a smaller area with roughly 55 acres of coral reef surrounding a picturesque coral cay and a mangrove island. Separated from the main reef system by the shipping channel, Low Isles is home to many giant green sea turtles, beautiful coral gardens and ample marine life.

Will I see a turtle? A shark? What will I see?

The Great Barrier Reef contains thousands of different species of marine life. We cannot guarantee what marine life you will see on your day of travel, however there will be many different species of fish, coral and molluscs. Giant green sea turtles are found around the Great Barrier Reef and are frequently sighted at Low Isles. Reef sharks are quite common and a wonderful sight to see.

How long does it take to get to the Low Isles?

Calypso takes approximately 30 minutes to travel to Low Isles

What do I need to bring? Do you supply towels?

Please bring along swimmers, towel, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and credit card (VISA, MasterCard or EFTPOS, sorry no cash) for any on board purchases. We do not provide towels for guests, however please ask your accommodation provider who will supply beach towels for you.

What if it rains? Does the tour get cancelled?

Operating in the Wet Tropics, we expect rain mainly during the summer months. However, it can rain all year round. Rain doesn’t affect our day to day operations to the Great Barrier Reef. We do not cancel tours due to rain as it does not affect the quality of the reef.

What are stingers? When are they around?

Stingers are a generalised term for jellyfish. During the summer months (November through to May), marine stingers, Irukandjis and box jellyfish, are present in the waters off the coast of Tropical North Queensland.

All Calypso vessels are equipped with lycra suits (free of charge) during these summer months. As well as a precaution, lycra suits have other benefits such as sun protection and also reducing the amount of sunscreen in the water.

Will I get seasick? Do you offer medication onboard?

Our smaller Calypso Low Isles boat is still a  wide-bodied catamaran for stability and has the advantage of cutting through the waves instead of riding the swell. Vessels do encounter some form of movement no matter what the conditions so prevention is best. Two types of medication are offered on board our vessels. Ginger tablets are provided free of charge to passengers who prefer a natural option and are good for pregnant women. The other form of sea sickness medication is called Travacalm and costs $3 for 2 tablets. Please see the crew on board. If you know you suffer from sea sickness, its best to see a pharmacist prior to your trip to the reef.

I am pregnant, can I still go to the reef?

Yes, you can travel to the Low Isles. There is plenty to do such as Glass Bottom Boat or walks to Lighthouse if you wish to stay dry and relax. Snorkelling is low impact and a non strenuous activity great for pregnant women. Flotation devices are perfect for extra buoyancy and gentle kicking will provide enough propulsion for you to get around and explore the reef.

Medicated sea sickness tablets cannot be taken but Ginger tablets are safe for pregnant women to take and are free onboard. If in doubt, see a pharmacist.

Do you cater for special dietary requirements?

Most dietary requirements can be catered for, such as: coeliac, vegans, lactose intolerance and other allergies for the morning or afternoon tea. Please let us know if you have an allergy 24 hours before your departure. If in doubt please contact us on +61 7 4099 6999.

“ We did the half day cruise to Low Isles. The boat-staff are really friendly, knowledgeable and professional. You get good quality flippers, mask and snorkel that fit well, and as much help or instruction as you need. A glass-bottom boat tour serves as an appetizer to the snorkelling. There were literally thousands of fish, mounds of coral, two or three reef sharks about a metre long, and two or three turtles. Bonny via Tripadvisor
“ THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER!! The most incredible afternoon on the Low Isles. I can’t recommend this company enough and in particular our crew. Having always wanted to snorkel but never having the confidence to do it, the guidance on how to use the equipment from Davina and the patience of Taylor in the water meant that I succeeded!! Sea Turtles; an array of fishes; sea cucumber and star fish along with the most incredible coral was my prize Michelle P via Tripadvisor
“ Perfect time of year to enjoy Low Isles snorkel and glass bottom boat 1/2 day tour. Beautiful corals and fish to see while snorkelling and exploring the shallow waters just out from Low Isles shoreline. Quality vessel. Quick 1/2 hour trip to Low Isles on fast comfortable boat. Aija B via Tripadvisor
“ Toured the half day Low Isles trip, didn’t fancy a full day at sea however we weren’t disappointed or left wishing we had done the full day outer reef trip. Very friendly and knowledgable guides and we also got to swim side by side with a sea turtle and a reef shark which was an amazing experience... a very safe and family friendly environment Marty M via Tripadvisor

Awesome all day tour of GBR. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Loved the little pre-snorkeling talk to learn more about what we would see. These folks know their stuff! I've been snorkeling many times & the 5 minutes of snorkeling tips was the best I ever had! Good guidance in the water, as well. Very helpful to first timers, kids & non-swimmers. ZERO leaking of the mask. Equipment seemed in pretty good shape (I've had some pretty janky fins, masks, etc in my day...). But annoying that they make you bring towels. Nice boat. Lots of indoor & outdoor space. We had about 40 people + staff. Was able to accommodate vegan diet, though food as just OK. And bring your own soy milk for coffee. Booze for purchase after snorkeling is done WOOHOO. Website says cash only, but some used credit cards.

We loved Sailaway! 5-Star experience...enjoyed our full day trip on a catamaran from Port Douglas to the Great Barrier Reef. We enjoyed the crew (who were warm, friendly, helpful, professional and fabulous), the sailing, the food, and the amazing opportunity to take several snorkeling dives to the reef (two from the island and one off the back of the boat). Great people, awesome cruise, gorgeous scenery and an overall fun experience. Our whole family (2 adults and 3 young kids) loved it and it was one of the highlights of our time in Australia. The Sailaway crew did an outstanding job of getting us out to the reef, instructing us on how to use the equipment and then setting us loose to explore the reef at our own pace. Know before you go to wear your swim suit, carry a towel and also carry your shoes as no footwear is allowed on the boat. Sailaway will provide you with the Lycra suit to cover your body to protect you from jellyfish, as well as provide the snorkeling fins, mask, breathing tube and a flotation " noodle" to make things just that much easier in the water. Sailaway will also pick you up and return you to your hotel so no further planning is needed. Great 5-Star experience!

Highly recommend Sailaway tours to see the Low Isles and the Great Barrier Reef. I used them for an all day snorkeling trip and couldn't have wished for a better experience! Captain Alex and his team of two, did an outstanding job of getting us out to the reef, instructing us on how to use the equipment and then setting us loose to explore the reef at our own pace. What I really appreciated was the level of care given to individuals who were on the boat with me. We had some elderly people who needed some assistance in the water when they grew fatigued and also some on the boat who found the rolling seas to be too much for their stomachs. All situations were handled with grace and ease and no one felt uncomfortable. There was a morning tea served on board, a full luncheon buffet as well as afternoon tea included in the price. Know before you go to wear your swim suit, carry a towel and also carry your shoes as no footwear is allowed on the boat. Sailaway will provide you with the Lycra suit to cover your body to protect you from the elements as well as provide the snorkeling fins, mask, breathing tube and a flotation " noodle" to make things just that much easier in the water. You will be asked to pay an additional $6 reef tax before boarding the boat so also bring some money as well. There is also a short tour of the island when snorkeling is complete. And in case you are wondering, there are restrooms on the island, on the boat as well as on the dock. What you actually get to do is totally weather dependent. On nice days you can snorkel at the island and then again off the boat. That may be shortened in inclement weather but it's up to the Captain. Sailaway will also pick you up and return you to your hotel so no further planning is needed. A great way to see the Great Barrier Reef up close and personal. And just in case you see sharks like I did, I was assured they were just harmless reef sharks, but they freaked me out just the same!

So enjoyable! We did the Sunset Sail which was beautiful! The yacht was amazing and our captain/first mate were very nice and knowledgeable. I'm grateful that they had anti-nausea medicine complimentary because the waves were choppy but it made for such a fun ride. Canapes were delicious-- enough for a few left overs. Ticket includes a drink and thereafter it's a cash bar. I definitely recommend this for anyone wanting something different and fun to do while on vacation.

Photo of Rob K.

We took the Sunset Sail to the Low Isles with Sailaway, and really enjoyed our time. The wind was about 25km/h so the friendly crew managed a steady 6-7 knots each way in the magnificent and well-catered boat, which fits a maximum of about 20. The Low Isles themselves are fairly small, sandy islands (the sand is a bit gritty and there's lots of small bits of coral so watch where you walk or maybe wear thongs) covered in trees and with a lighthouse and a couple of semi-permanent sheds/buildings (incidentally our guide told us that Steve Irwin passed away in one of the sheds after his terrible encounter with the Stingray). The snorkelling is pretty good - not as jaw-dropping as the outer reef can be but there are lots of fish, sea turtles and soft corals (as well as hard corals, so please be careful). The reef is pretty shallow here too which can be a bit nerve-wracking. The return sail was stunning as the sun set behind us.

I booked a tour at 5:30pm leaving the next day at 1:00pm. At the time of my booking, I was told that they needed 3 more people to sign up in order to set sail and they would keep the tour open till 10am the following morning with the understanding that people would most likely sign up in the morning. One hour later I got an email informing me they had closed the tour. I never would have signed up in the first place had I known that the tour would be closed in one hour! In the meantime, I received an incredibly condescending email from the owner of the company. We then had an equally unpleasant conversation on the phone. I'd advise anybody to use a different company. Customer service is not their specialty.

We chose Sailaway for an afternoon snorkeling trip to the Low Isles with sunset viewing afterward. Best. Trip. Ever. Now I know why millionaires all own ships :) Sailing on the turquoise water with gentle waves lapping against the sides of the boat while the breeze catches the sails was one of the most relaxing experiences of my life. We were part of a small group of maybe 15 passengers taking the ship to the Low Isles from 1pm to 6:30pm. The crew of 2, I believe their names were Richard and Jane, were incredibly gracious hosts who insisted we make ourselves at home on the ship as if it were our own. The crew was very informative, professional, friendly and funny. They genuinely seemed to enjoy their job and made certain every passenger was comfortable. I would definitely recommend Sailaway to anyone wanting to get a colorful look into the Great Barrier Reef. The snorkeling site on this trip looked like an undersea garden swarming with fish large and small. The coral was surprisingly undamaged and very plentiful in this spot. We even had the island to ourselves for about an hour as the afternoon voyage brings you to the island between the schedules of the other ships.

Great Barrier Reef Tours from Cairns & Port Douglas

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world and Queensland’s most remarkable natural gift. It is the world’s largest coral reef, comprised of over 3000 reef systems and coral cays, and home to an abundance of mesmerising sea life. It is scattered with breathtaking tropical islands, including some of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

Cairns in Far North Queensland is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef , so it’s no wonder people from all all over the world flock to this small tropical city as the starting point for their Great Barrier Reef adventure.

Once you’ve decided to indulge in a trip to the Great Barrier Reef the only problem you will encounter is the overwhelming number of reef trips on offer to choose from.

The beauty of this is that there is something for everyone and here in this article we will uncover some of the best Great Barrier Reef tours on offer to help make your choice a little easier.

Reef Tours From Cairns

Pro dive cairns.

As the name suggests, Pro Dive is all about diving. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an advanced diver with years of experience under your belt, Pro Dive has something for you.

Their Silverswift day trips are the most comprehensive one day diving experience with over 5 hours spent out at the reef visiting 3 different outer reef sites.

This ultra modern catamaran caters to small groups and has everything you need to experience the underwater world of colourful marine life in safety and comfort. The complete beginner can enjoy adventure snorkelling and 2 introductory dives while more experienced divers can indulge in up to 3 certified dives.

For the more adventurous at heart, Pro Dive specialises in Liveaboard Trips where you can spend from 3-7 days exploring the very best dive sites the reef has to offer, while staying on board their multi million dollar, purpose built liveaboard vessel. You can participate in up to 11 dives, including 2 night dives, at 16 exclusive dive sites.

Sunlover Reef Cruises

Sunlover Reef Cruises offer travellers a full day of reef adventures, designed to cater for everyone including families with kids.

Departing daily from Cairns, you’ll enjoy a high speed air conditioned catamaran experience to the new multi-level pontoon at Moore Reef. The trip is approximately 40km from Cairns and you’ll enjoy the sundeck and only theme-park style water slide on the reef making it a blast for kids.

Upon arriving you’ll enjoy 4 hours at the pontoon, including snorkelling equipment, guided glass bottom boat and semi-submersible tours, giving options for water lovers or those that would prefer to stay dry. You’ll also be able to enjoy feeding the fish, a fully enclosed children’s pool and an underwater observatory to get up close with marine life.

That’s enough to make anyone hungry and Sunlover Reef Cruises include a hot and cold buffet lunch featuring local fresh prawns. Even if swimming with fish is not your thing you’ll still be able to enjoy an amazing Great Barrier Reef experience.

Reef Magic Cruises

Reef Magic is fortunate enough to offer exclusive access to a stunning coral reef location which was purposefully selected for its superior water clarity, coral quality and diversity of marine life.

Like other tours, you’ll depart directly from Cairns on a fast, stable catamaran providing a smooth ride, for those that have weak sea legs. Not only will you have more of your day to experience the magic of the reef, you’ll enjoy space, comfort and a quality service.

Snorkel in the sheltered coral lagoon or join their Marine Biologist on a Guided Snorkel safari.

Not a confident swimmer? For those that would prefer to keep their feet on the boat, you’ll be able to view the reef from the semi-submersible reef viewer, glass bottom boat or underwater observatory.

If simply relaxing & soaking up the tropical warmth is more your style then take time out on our spacious sundeck where you will also find the regions only reef-based massage therapist.  Best of all when travelling with Reef Magic Cruises, you benefit from the expert local knowledge of a Cairns family owned company while enjoying a friendly Australian atmosphere.

Fitzroy Island

If you’re wanting to experience the Great Barrier Reef from your own tropical island paradise, then you can’t go past Fitzroy Island. A short 45 minute Fast Cat ride will have you arriving at the Fitzroy Island jetty where you are free to explore this magical Island and the surrounding coral reef at your own leisure.

Alternatively you can choose to combine the Fast Cat transfer with a guided sea kayak and snorkel tour. This will take you to the most private beaches and stunning coral reef, teeming with tropical marine life, only accessible by kayak. A glass bottom boat tour can also be included in your package for those wanting a less hands on experience but still wanting to get a glimpse of the breathtaking beauty that lies below the surface.

One day at Fitzroy Island is never enough to take in all that the Island has to offer, so you can choose to extend you stay and pamper yourself for the night in one of the resort suites or beach cabins.

Reef Tours From Port Douglas

Quicksilver cruises.

Quicksilver’s Wavepiercing Catamaran departs from the Reef Marina in Port Douglas daily at 9:30am out to Agincourt Reef, a pristine ribbon reef at the very outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef.

Quicksilver Cruises offers a wide variety of activities, so it is ideal for those who are wanting to experience a little bit of everything. You will have the opportunity to learn to dive and snorkel, or the more experienced passengers can go on an advanced dive or snorkel tour and explore the breathtaking beauty of this remote coral reef.

Quicksilver has a permanent floating pontoon at Agincourt Reef that includes a viewing platform and underwater observatory which is perfect for non-swimmers and families with young children. A trip on the semi-submersible is also a great way for non-swimmers to experience the magic of the reef without getting wet.

A Quicksilver tour isn’t as intimate as some smaller tour operators but with so much to do and plenty of space to do it in, it won’t feel overcrowded at all.

Reef Sprinter

If you want to experience the Great Barrier Reef but are not too keen on boats and the thought of spending a whole day out on the water isn’t very appealing, then Reef Sprinter Reef Trips were made for you.

Reef Sprinter departs from Port Douglas and only takes 15 minutes to get out to the stunning coral reef at Low Isles. Once out there, you will have 1.5 hours of snorkelling time to explore the beautiful coral formations and colourful tropical fish before taking the 15 minute boat trip back to Port Douglas.

Reef Sprinter also have a glass bottom boat located at the Low Isles, giving those who prefer not to swim the chance to still see the spectacular coral reef, turtles and diverse marine life that makes the Great Barrier Reef so special.

As you will discover, these Great Barrier Reef tours are just a handful of what’s available when you start looking to book a tour out to the reef. Choosing the right reef trip for you and your family can be confusing but we believe the tours we’ve reviewed here are some of the best on offer and have something for everyone, no matter what type of reef adventure you’re seeking.
