Company launches its most thermally advanced gaming laptop ever with OMEN 16 and debuts its first Victus 15 Laptop for emerging gamers

PALO ALTO, Calif, May 18, 2022 – HP Inc. today revealed its newest gaming hardware and software created for gamers everywhere with the thermally innovative OMEN 16 Laptop, accessible Victus 15 Laptop, and a variety of powerful updates to OMEN Gaming Hub to enable elevated gaming experiences for all.

Gaming continues to permeate throughout the globe and in America with 76% of the US population playing games an average of 16.5 hours a week in 2021, an increase of 3.8 hours from 2019 3 . Total consumer spending for PC gaming hardware and accessories is up 62% from 2019 4 , highlighting the desire people are having to making PC gaming a bigger part of their lives.

HP Omen Transcend 14 review: "an impressive gaming laptop with more than a few tricks up its sleeve"

The HP Omen Transcend 14 is a seriously impressive gaming laptop with more than a few tricks up its sleeve. While its power is certainly middling, the OLED display and slimline form factor go a long way for those after a work / play hybrid device.

It wasn't too long ago that a gaming laptop would take up an entire backpack and leave you with permanent spinal issues should you actually have to carry it. Thankfully, those days are over. Brands like Razer and Asus have always modelled slimline rigs packing weaker versions of high end components into almost impossibly thin chassis' for the sake of portability, and HP entered the game last year with its Omen Transcend 16. Now we have an even smaller version.

I'm incredibly impressed with the HP Omen Transcend 14, the 14-inch, OLED-toting, 1.6kg rig with conservative but still powerful specs and a relaxed aesthetic. This is a machine for those looking to take their rig pretty much anywhere, and sometimes for less cash than similarly specced options from Asus and Razer. It's not the best gaming laptop overall, but if you want to trade back pain for a few settings tweaks it's a must-see. 

At first glance, the HP Omen Transcend 14 reminded me of a Chromebook. That sounds worse than it is, this is a sleek piece of kit with a sturdy feel overall. However, the soft rounded corners, matte black coating, and small form factor have an air of, dare I age myself, netbook about them. It's a far cry from the unibody brick of the Razer Blade 14 or the MacBook-esque Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 , but ultimately keeping those materials light means this is a particularly easy machine to transport.

It also looks much less like a gaming laptop. Gone are the chunky lids and angular shapes of HP's previous releases, we're instead in for a sophisticated, understated experience here. I'm a proud owner of a now purely decorative GTX 1050 HP Omen, and as I mentioned in my review of last year's HP Omen Transcend 16 , I've been waiting for this slimline revolution. The top of the lid bares a simple 'Omen' logo stamped in a light silver, and some small text along the slightly protruding rear. Everything is uniform, clean, and crisp - it's Chromebook-esque but I mean that as a compliment.

The body itself supports its price tag with a full aluminum construction. This is a little softer than the rock solid slab of Razer's CNC milled designs, with some flex to the main keyboard area. Similarly, the display does carry a significant amount of wobble that could have been reduced with a tighter hinge. Despite its thin profile, though, I never had any concerns about longer term durability during testing. Still, you're saving yourself a lot of cash and 200g in weight as well. Asus's G14 does win the weigh-in at just 1.49kg.

While weighing slightly more than the G14, the HP Omen Transcend 14 feels smaller. That's likely due to the floating design, with steep angles to the super thin front lip and extra space employed around the main deck leading down to the actual base of the unit. That means the Transcend 14 is both smaller in physical footprint compared to the G14, but also feels noticeably more streamlined in the hand as well.

The HP Omen Transcend 14 remains conservative in its specs. You're maxing out at an RTX 4070 GPU here, which is the standard for a slimline 14-inch machine. RTX 4050 and RTX 4060 specs both ship with Intel's newer Meteor Lake Core Ultra 7 155H, while the RTX 4070 model whacks you up to an Intel Core Ultra 9 185H for a combined price boost of $500 over the $1659.99 MSRP of the RTX 4060 model. There's no opportunity to build your own spec between these components, which is tricky when you get to the RAM department. The two cheaper units offer up 16GB RAM but you'll need to spring for the full RTX 4070 model to up that to 32GB. I'm not mad about it, though. 

Chances are, if you need to run something more substantial you're already eyeing up the RTX 4070 GPU. The Transcend 14 is designed as a hybrid work / play device, so packing extra RAM into the price tag would likely ward off more players than it would attract with fixed configurations. Still, it would have been nice to see more flexibility in the build process for anyone who does want to Frankenstein their own kit. 

The RTX 4060 is where the HP Omen feels most at home, though. The brand's software allows for a good amount of control over fan speeds and power profiles, and once settings are maxed out there's a surprising level of performance on offer here. The system itself is fairly clunky, though. Omen Gaming Hub wants to be too many things at once to truly be useful for any of them. It's a shopfront, newsstand, and configuration tool all rolled into one, which means menus are sometimes hidden and the initial UI is particularly cluttered. Once you've found your way around, though, you've got access to system performance, RGB lighting controls, power settings, graphics switching, and fan presets. 

That's all displayed on one of the best screens I've used in a long time. The glossy OLED panel is absolutely the Transcend's best feature, offering a similar color profile and super vivid contrast to the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 while cashing in at the same 1800p resolution. It's a particularly shiny display, which means reflections can get in the way if you're playing in a bright environment, but in the dark this screen absolutely sings. Everything is crisply defined, running super smooth, and with an explosion of color.

Underneath, you'll find a standard set of keys without additional number pad or navigation options, as is standard for a gaming laptop of this size. The lattice-free design means that despite the smaller form factor, you're still getting full-sized keycaps for a particularly easy typing experience - a major benefit for anyone using a smaller laptop for everyday work. These are shallow keys, but still retain a nice clack to each press with a satisfying tactile feel and springy debounce for good measure. The RGB lighting surrounding each cap (and highlighted by the translucent, almost pudding-style design) is strong and vibrant, but can only be configured in four-zones unlike other laptops which offer per-key customization.

I wouldn't recommend keeping those LEDs on when running off battery power, though. Of course, gaming laptops rarely excel without their chargers but considering the Transcend 14 has such a flexible work / play use-case I would have expected a slightly beefier battery. As it stood, I was able to draw around five hours of work use out of the machine, running a few Chrome tabs.

The Intel Core processor inside the Transcend 14 is largely identical to last year's 13th generation in performance. That's pretty universal for 2024's roster of gaming laptops, but it does mean those after big gains in performance will be waiting another year. As it stands, the HP Omen manages to keep this CPU running nicely in its slimline form factor - the actual hardware isn't going to compete with that of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 but in itself there's some strong numbers here. 

Similarly, the RTX 4060, while running at a reduced power rate of 65W in this configuration, puts some serious work in. With everything dialled up to 11, Time Spy and Fire Strike performance is within spitting distance of that posted by the larger HP Omen Transcend 16 last year - a fantastic result considering just how skinny the new release is. 

The story in-game is much the same. I was impressed by these numbers during benchmarking - a 14-inch slimline gaming laptop packing 70fps in Returnal's Epic setting at 1080p just wouldn't have existed a few years ago. Even though we do drop down below 60fps at full whack 1600p in both Total War: Three Kingdoms and Returnal, these are heavy benchmarks and I wouldn't expect a machine this slim at this price to do much more. 

These are all benchmarked from the HP Omen running at full fan speed and with the system's smart performance toggle set to the full 15W. The HP Omen doesn't have the biggest specs on the street to work with, but with a handful of nifty additional settings it can certainly punch above its configuration's weight. These are impressive performance benchmarks for anyone looking to play the latest and greatest titles at high settings, though more demanding games might need some additional tweaks if you're boosting up to 1600p and beyond to the full 1800p of the display. 

Should you buy the HP Omen Transcend 14?

In this RTX 4060 configuration, the HP Omen Transcend 14 is slightly more expensive than the latest Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 ($1,599.99 for an AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS model). Of course, that's only taking MSRP into consideration. With current sale prices putting the same model at $1,359.99 on HP's own site , the story is a little different (UK shoppers can find the full range at Currys ). At that rate, this is an excellent option for anyone after a portable PC with enough grunt to take on moderately demanding games with a few tweaks helping you over the 60fps hump. The OLED panel is pulling a considerable amount of weight in that valuation as well, offering incredible visuals I'm yet to see on another rig at this price point. 

As it stands, this is an excellent option for both work and play. Battery woes aside, you're getting a slick device with plenty of power and features rarely spotted at this price point - all in a super compact chassis. 

How we tested the HP Omen Transcend 14

I used the HP Omen Transcend 14 for two weeks, testing alongside other new releases for one and dedicating the other to solely working and playing from HP's device. In that time, I worked directly from the laptop for two days, and played from both the device by itself and connected to a separate monitor in the evenings. I primarily played through Assassin's Creed Odyssey and House Flipper during casual testing, while stress testing in Apex Legends, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Total War: Three Kingdoms, Returnal, and Hitman 3. Hp omen 16 review: performance for a very fair price.

Offering top gaming performance with a more understated style, is the HP Omen 16 a laptop for gamers to consider?

The HP Omen 16 is part of a laptop trend even miserable old so-and-sos like us can get on board with. It's a powerful gaming PC - but doesn't look too much like one.

This is part of why Razer 's laptops caught our attention years ago. The concept of 'style' didn't start and end with making the laptop equivalent of a Lamborghini.

As such the HP Omen 16 has become a gaming equivalent of the great HP Envy 13 . It's a performance laptop that's reasonably priced, looks pretty good and has wide appeal.

The HP Omen 16 is a more mature kind of gaming laptop, perfect for those who like to play games but would never wear a Fortnite hoodie out of the house. It is well-specced for 1080p play, although some of you might want to consider the step-up Nvidia RTX 3060 version instead.

Just two design elements mark the HP Omen 16 as a gaming laptop. And the first is something you can 'fix', if you like: its RGB-lit keyboard and the colourful diamond on the lid. Even this looks more like jewellery than a classic gamer motif though.

Older Omens were some of the more striking gaming laptops, with a strange tapered part below the screen. But nowadays HP seems to have made a concerted effort to make the whole range look pretty, well, 'normal'.

We welcome this because there are still plenty of more overtly gamer-ish laptops out there from Acer and Asus if you want the more eye-catching stuff.

HP's quality is solid too. The Omen 16 keyboard plate feels stiff, likely helped by the use of an aluminium keyboard surround. Its lid and underside seem to be plastic, but there's a pleasant consistency to the design that means you'll probably forget this within a day or two anyway.

It's a little heavy to be used as a day-to-day portable laptop at 2.25kg, but it's no monster.

The HP Omen 16 has a screen similar to its key rival, the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro . It's a 16.1-inch matte finish IPS LCD with a refresh rate of 165Hz and resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels.

These last two factors are great for gaming. You get the step-up in sharpness from 1080p, while at 165Hz the reproduction of fast motion on this display is reassuringly blur-free.

This isn't an ultra-wide colour screen and brightness is nothing too special at 300 nits. But each is easily good enough for an at-home gaming PC. Contrast is very good for an LCD too.

There is one little issue with our HP Omen 16, though. It has a clear patch of backlight bleed, looking as though the panel has been pinched in one corner, causing slight damage to the structure.

Therefore this is not a star display in every area, but we love the 1440p resolution, the size, and the general image quality.

Keyboard & touchpad

The HP Omen 16 has a pretty standard chiclet keyboard with membrane keys. Key action is good among laptops in general, but some of the top-end gaming designs have deeper action keys.

Their feel is light and fast, though, which is not a bad style for a gaming laptop.

There is an RGB backlight too, but not the most desirable per-key kind. Instead, there are four zones you can set independently, including a smaller one for the WSAD buttons. The intensity of the colour and the maximum brightness is not as good as a per-key system.

This is no big surprise when the HP Omen 16 is a somewhat value-led laptop. Its arch-rival, the Lenovo Legion 5, doesn't have an RGB backlight at all, just a single-colour one.

There are some similar compromises in the touchpad. At first glance it looks great - it's of a good size for a gaming laptop and looks the part. However, it has a plastic surface rather than a textured glass one.

As such the clicker doesn't have the refined feel of a lifestyle laptop like the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 either. However, let's get real: HP shouldn't be spending much of the Omen 16 budget on a fancy touchpad, and it hasn't. This pad is perfectly decent, and there's no annoying dead zone to the clicker. It just gets a bit stiffer right towards the top.

Performance

The HP Omen 16 is a solid fit for 1080p gaming with new titles. However, our review Omen 16 has an AMD Radeon RX 6600M GPU, which isn't quite as well equipped as the rival Nvidia RTX 3060. That can handle ray-tracing better and supports Nvidia's fab DLSS upscaling feature.

Nonetheless, perfrormance is solid. Remedy Entertainment's Control offers a good view of what you can expect from the laptop. Play it at 1080p resolution, high settings, and you'll see frame rates that head between the high 50s and 60fps. Want to use the native 1440p? You'll have to put up with mid-30s, or low-mid 40s fps if you drop the graphics down to medium settings.

So what's the point of the 1440p screen? There are loads of games that will run perfectly at the display's native resolution - and at 60fps.

However, at the moment we do slightly favour the rival RTX 3060 when working with this sort of budget. It is much better equipped for ray-tracing - you can't even switch it on in Control at the time of review - although at this level of GPU you'll often be better off without ray-tracing.

The AMD RX 6600M also lacks DLSS (an Nvidia technology), which lets you render games at a lower resolution and upscale them to your display's native res, with excellent results. AMD has its own version, Fidelity FX Super Resolution, but it is not quite as powerful.

Still, if you want Nvidia tricks, you can have them. There's an Intel/Nvidia version of the Omen 16 that costs more, and uses the Intel Core i7-11800H CPU, with an RTX 3060 GPU. However, by this point you're going head-to-head with the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro, which we like slightly more.

We are fairly impressed by the HP Omen 16's management of heat too. This is not a super-thick laptop, and the choice to use an aluminium keyboard plate does result in notable heating of the little grille above the keyboard after a while.

However, we're not talking about anything like the hot temperatures you might see in an ultra-thin gaming laptop like the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 . Its reasonably large diameter fans move heat away from the internals before it becomes too glaring, and they do so without any distracting high-pitch sound. We did hear the Omen 16 shift up a gear after about 15 minutes of play, but given it started from a very low noise base, we're not complaining.

Battery life & connectivity

A gaming laptop does not necessarily need amazing battery life. But one like this - that can easily double as a productivity all-rounder - could really do with it. The Omen 16 starts off from a good place, because it has an AMD Ryzen processor, which typically lets a laptop last longer off a charge than the Intel equivalents.

If you simply do light work on the HP Omen 16, we found it lasts four hours and 20 minutes. Not great. However, by our estimation it should do better than that. We then engaged the battery saver mode, started streaming video, and it then lasted five hours and 50 minutes. Much better.

You should see similar longevity if you keep the screen brightness modest, don't do anything taxing, and stick to the battery saver mode. It's slightly better than the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro managed, by around 50 minutes.

And the rest? The HP Omen 16 has OK speakers. Their tone is fine and maximum volume is acceptable, but as with almost all gaming laptops there's no actual bass going on here, just a sample size pack of mid-range.

Connections are fairly comprehensive, though. You get three classic USB-A 3.0 ports, one USB-C, an Ethernet connector, DisplayPort, and an SD slot.

The HP Omen 16's HDMI is specced to the 2.1 standard, but the USB-C does not have Thunderbolt. It's a slower 10Gbps connection. The step-up Intel/Nvidia does have a Thunderbolt 4, which is no surprise as the connector standard was designed by Intel in collaboration with Apple.

The HP Omen 16 is a versatile gaming laptop. It has a pleasantly low-key design, but the 4-zone RGB keyboard backlight can supply a little colour when you want it. The aluminium keyboard plate gives it some of the flavour of a slim and light style laptop too, even if the Omen is not notably slim or light.

Its keyboard is solid, the touchpad respectable, albeit made of plastic. The performance is a good fit for 1080p gaming, while AMD's upscaling tech lets you upscale that to 1440p in titles that support it.

We think the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro series has a slight edge over the HP Omen 16, but not a huge one. As ever when shopping for a gaming laptop, your choice should be guided by the deals available when you come to buy.

HP Omen 16 Transcend review: a sleek laptop with smooth gaming

W hen you look at the best laptops compared to the best gaming laptops, there's often a clear visible difference, and I'm not just talking about obnoxious RGB lighting. Gaming laptops are normally much bigger and heavier. It makes sense, these are performance-oriented machines that aren't exactly going to be taken to work every day. But then we have the HP Omen 16 Transcend...

It's not quite a MacBook-level of skinniness but this is the sleekest gaming laptop I've ever seen and the thinnest and lightest that HP has ever made. I was impressed with the regular HP Omen 16 when I reviewed it previously, but even just via the eye test the Omen 16 Transcend makes its mark. Let's see how it fares in our HP Omen 16 Transcend review. 

HP Omen 16 Transcend: Price & availability

The model of this laptop I received is unsurprisingly very similar in price to the standard HP Omen 16 I reviewed before: it's very much in the mid-range of the market at £1799/$1699. Both are in the shopping widget above for comparison.

For that price, you get a 13th Gen Intel Core i7 Processor and an Nvidia Geforce RTX 4060 GPU, so not the absolute top specs but at half the price of the likes of the MSI Raider GE78 HX, that's pretty good going.

HP Omen 16 Transcend review: Design

As you may have heard me write already, this is one svelte laptop. But that's not all it has going for it. Like the regular HP Omen 16, the Transcend isn't exactly a machine that screams 'gamer', and coupled with the lightweight design you could definitely get away with using this as a regular laptop in public. 

The finish does smudge a little easily, but the black metal shell is very easy on the eye and in my eyes resembles a stealth bomber. The magnesium-aluminium cover and keyboard frame is much nicer to the touch than plastic alternatives.

At just 2.16 kg, I had absolutely no qualms about putting this machine in my bag to carry around all day. The charger, so often a dead weight on gaming laptops, is barely bigger than that of a standard machine's equivalent, too, which is much appreciated.

HP Omen 16 Transcend review: Display

With the rest of the laptop looking so smart, it's a shame that the display doesn't quite hit the same heights.

Don't get me wrong, the 16-inch widescreen (1920 x 1200 resolution) panel is fine, but it's not quite what I'd like for the price. I wish that the QHD screen of the regular Omen 16 could make a reappearance, but this effort is good enough. 

At least with a 165Hz refresh rate, games should be plenty smooth, but it does mean that running anything over 165fps is a waste of resources. 

HP Omen 16 Transcend review: Performance

While it's not at the top-end of the market in price terms, the Omen 16 Transcend is still multiple times more expensive than a console. But can you expect performance beyond the likes of the PS5 and Xbox Series X? 

The answer is not really. Playing Deathloop (a stunningly beautiful game) on ultra settings and with performance boosted to the max, I could get a frame rate consistently between 50-60fps. However, the machine was running pretty loud and warm at the back especially. Unplugged, it was a different story, with around 15-20fps in busier moments on screen. 

Bethesda's Starfield was another test for this laptop. While I could achieve a playable 40fps on ultra settings when connected to the mains, that dropped to around 15-20fps once disconnected from the power source, which is bordering on unplayable. Of course by scaling down the settings, you can get much smoother performance. 

If you're not after a laptop/console hybrid, the price is a big hurdle to get over, while those who are on the hunt should think about what they're using it for and consider the much cheaper Acer Nitro 5 too. It may not be as stylish but your wallet will thank you and it has similar performance levels.

In terms of benchmarking, you should expect a reasonable level of performance from the Transcend: its single core CPU score was 2608, while multi-core delivered 138,85 and the GPU scored 97,291.

HP Omen 16 Transcend review: Features 

Of course while its gaming performance may not be quite extraordinary, there's more than enough laptop here to do pretty much anything you could want in terms of everyday tasks. 

Indeed, this is where the sleek size really pays off – as it is essentially a powerful Windows machine, that also runs games. The keyboard is a pleasure to use and I found the keys to be nicely spaced out, avoiding any misinputs. If I'm being picky, I would have liked an Intel Core i9 processor at this price though.

Sound from the dual speakers is reasonable, but nothing to write home about, especially when the machine itself can run loud. If possible, I would pair it with one of the best gaming headsets instead. 

While the larger Omen 16 didn't have any Thunderbolt ports, I'm pleased to say that the Transcend has two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 offerings as well as two standard USB-A ports. The webcam is a strong 1080p effort and comes with a privacy slider too. A big thumbs up from me. 

HP Omen 16 Transcend review: Battery life 

Battery life is always a shortcoming for gaming laptops, but it's particularly noticeable with the Omen 16 Transcend. A 70Wh battery is perfectly fine when using it as a normal laptop, with around 7 hours of life, but when gaming you'll struggle to play graphically intense games for longer than around 45 minutes. 

At least the 230W charger is sufficiently lightweight so it isn't a real inconvenience to carry around in your bag. Some gaming laptops come with gigantic brick-like plugs that are a bother, but that's not the case here. 

HP Omen 16 Transcend review: Verdict

The HP Omen 16 Transcend brings a gorgeous design that has genuine appeal compared to the big brutes that dominate the gaming laptop market, while still offering a strong level of performance. 

Having said that, the screen and battery life leave a little more to be desired at this price point. 

Overall, if you want a laptop that's also capable of decent gaming, then this is a great choice. Otherwise that trade-off for slenderness for sake of power and cooling might not fit the bill. 

Also consider

If you like the design of this laptop (but don't mind it being a bit chunkier) then the HP Omen 16 is at a similar price with a much nicer QHD display. 

The budget-conscious should consider the Acer Nitro 5, while if money is absolutely no object the consider for the MSI Raider GE 78 HX.

HP Omen Transcend 14 Review: Bringing Style to Gaming Laptops

Neither a featureless slab nor a carnival of lights, HP's latest 14-inch Omen has its own unique flair. It doesn't scrimp on substance, either.

HP gets points for style with its new 14-inch Omen Transcend model, a compact option for the compact gaming/creative crowd in the not-expensive-but-not-cheap mainstream price range. With performance suitable for high-quality 1080p or mid-quality 1440p gaming, along with a striking design, it's a definite option to consider if you're in the market and don't care about a few potential flaws.

The Transcend comes in dark gray or white -- the latter costs $20 extra -- and can be configured in a variety of ways. The only display available is the 2,880x1,00 60Hz/120Hz dynamic-refresh-rate OLED, though. It starts at $1,500 with an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H, GeForce RTX 4050, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM and Wi-Fi 6E. Ramping up to an RTX 4060 runs another $70; if you want to bump to a 4070, it costs another $570, because you can only get that by jumping to a Core Ultra 9 185H with 32GB RAM. A 1TB SSD adds $90, while 2TB requires $250 over the base; Wi-Fi 7 is a $40 option and Windows 11 Pro $70. All told, you can spend up to $2,450 on the laptop.

One of HP's novelties for the Transcend 14 is a built-in wireless transceiver for the HyperX Cloud 3 wireless headset  (HyperX is an HP brand), an excellent gaming headset. HP offers a bundle with the headset, but you don't get any discount buying it that way, since it's about the same $150 either way, and comes with the same dongle for use with other systems. It's nice not having to worry about a dongle, but you can wait and buy it on sale if you're on the fence. The transceiver only works with that headset, though.

We tested a middle $1,700 configuration of the laptop -- the base plus 1TB SSD and Wi-Fi 7 -- though HP sent the headset bundle box, so technically it's the $1,850 version. Given the laptop's solid but not standout performance, I'd suggest opting for a different laptop if you need more power, like the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 , rather than upping to the Ultra 9/RTX 4070 config. If performance doesn't matter all that much to you, then save some money and get the base configuration, possibly with extra storage or Wi-Fi 7.

HP embeds a wireless transceiver for the HyperX Cloud 3 wireless headset in the Transcend 14. That's actually the rear of the laptop with its small forward hinge.

I really like the look of the Transcend 14. It's striking without resorting to slablike, though the only RGB lighting on it is the keyboard backlight -- which seems to have enough lighting for all the laptops. It's relatively thin at 0.7 in/18mm, but looks thinner because it has rubber feet that leave some space beneath it to accommodate the air intake on the bottom. It's not especially lightweight, about the same as competitors with discrete GPUs.

The ports are scattered on the left, right and back. There's a decent number of them, but it's somewhat disappointing that the USB connections are only USB 3.1: That's got a 10Gbps transfer rate. Of course you can get 40Gbps through the rear Thunderbolt 4 port, but if you're using it for creation as HP pitches this, I'd want two Thunderbolt ports or at least a second fast USB 3.2 connection (and you lose the one at the back for if you're on power). If you only need the connections for attaching an external keyboard or mouse, you're fine with the slower ports.

The touchpad is the same quality as you get with its biz and premium laptops, so no complaints there. I did notice that frequently touched areas, like the wrist rests, developed smudgeprints very quickly, a problem you likely wouldn't have with the white model.

While the latticeless-ish (I say "ish" because the strike zones of the keys don't extend to meet each other, instead spreading at the base to show the backlight), per-key RGB keyboard makes a striking first impression, it was only partially effective as a backlight . The LEDs are designed to illuminate the area formerly called the lattice, but the symbols on the keycaps are barely -- if at all -- translucent and are overwhelmed by all the color. The only way I could read the letters in the dark was to look directly down on the keyboard.

Otherwise, it's a perfectly serviceable membrane keyboard, and the decent 1080p webcam supports Windows Hello facial recognition, and you can use both Windows Studio Effects and Nvidia Broadcast, the latter accessible though the Omen Gaming Hub software. The camera is below average in low light (noise), the exposure is meh (it doesn't meter off your face, so you get hotspots on your forehead and cheeks) and my normally pasty-white skin looked like a creamsicle . The software addresses the noise, but neither lets you fine tune exposure or white balance. Nvidia Broadcast has a lot more controls than Studio Effects, video and audio; the latter draws less power, but the former runs on more powerful hardware. Overall, it's pretty typical of what I've seen from HP, though.

Performance and display

It's hard to screw up an OLED screen, and this one's no exception, delivering OLED-typical high contrast and a large color gamut with colors that pop. It's good for everyday use and reasonably accurate for most creative work. If you do need color-critical accuracy, you should tweak the calibration, since it uses a generic profile that could use some tightening.

As it is, the white point is a hair low -- close to DCI-P3 at 6200K, but a little warm for the more commonly accepted 6500K. Gamma is a little high at 2.3, but that can work better than 2.2 on OLED, since it opens up the shadows, where OLED tends to clip. Like all OLED panels, it covers 100% P3, and sRGB plus 94% Adobe RGB. It doesn't have profiles for the other color spaces, which means it extends well past the boundaries of sRGB and may render highly saturated hues inaccurately. It hits peak brightness around 400 nits in standard mode, which is good for OLED (OLED's higher contrast means it doesn't need to get as bright for visibility in direct light as IPS).

Color measurements

At least in my testing, the panel far exceeded its 500 nits rated peak brightness in HDR, hitting well above 600 nits, and a white point of effectively 6500K. It looked good when mapping high-brightness content down to the screens smaller tonal range; at a brightness level of 40, it seemed to most closely approximate the correct tone curve (PQ ST2084). The audio doesn't fare quite as well; I heard some distortion and muddiness in music, especially when the laptop was on my lap.

The screen supports dynamic refresh-rate switching between 60Hz and 120Hz, intended to save power by dropping to the lower rate when the higher isn't needed. Like most OLED screens, it has a very high pixel-refresh rate and low persistence, so it displays very little motion blur when gaming at 120Hz.

Graphics performance ranks where expected, between the RTX 4050 and RTX 4070, making the HP generally suitable for high-quality 1080p or mid-quality 1440p gaming or mainstream creative work. 

Because the laptop doesn't support Nvidia's Advanced Optimus architecture, you can't force it to use the discrete GPU; the performance settings in the Gaming Hub software let you choose among Eco (always use the integrated GPU), Balanced/Hybrid (let the system choose when to use the discrete GPU) and Performance (the same as Hybrid, but allocating more power to drive the components and dynamically allocate it as needed between the CPU and GPU). 

There's always at least a tiny bit of overhead when the discrete GPU has to work in conjunction with the integrated GPU to drive the screen, which can potentially slow things down a little. The flip side is that it can be more battery efficient, and the HP's roughly 9- to 10-hour battery life (under the very light load our tests impose) may be worth the tradeoff for some.

You can also control fan speed: It has Auto and Max settings, plus the ability to create a manual curve. The cooling system draws air from the bottom and blows it out through the back, which keeps most of the metal surfaces from getting hot. I could feel it a bit coming through the keyboard, but it never got uncomfortable. The fans can get loud, though.

Processor performance is also on par with the other laptops with Core Ultra 7 155H CPUs we've tested. I was hoping the pattern I'd seen with the Alienware m16 R2  of only small drops in performance on battery would hold, but it looks more similar to older Intel H processors, where it can drop a lot when unplugged.

Wrapping sufficient power for mainstream gaming and graphics work in a compact, stylish design with an OLED display makes the HP Omen Transcend a first-rate general-purpose laptop choice and solid value.
