Family-Friendly Guide: 15 Unmissable Things to Do in Bayfield, WI

' src=

Welcome to Bayfield, Wisconsin—where the air is fresh, the locals are friendly, and the cheese curds are squeaky. If you’re looking for a low-key family vacation that packs a high-key punch of fun, you’ve landed in the right place. Below I’ve shared the best things to do in Bayfield, WI, especially if you’re bringing kids.

Things to Do in Bayfield, WI

The fruit loop trail of fruit farms.

The Bayfield “Fruit Loop” is a collection of family-run orchards and berry farms dotted around Bayfield. It’s a great place to introduce kids to the concept of farm-to-table (or in this case, plant-to-mouth), and our personal favorite was Blue Vista Farm for their incredible early season blueberries and the friendliest customer service.

Insider tip: Visit during harvest season (July to October) to pick your own berries and apples. Don’t forget to try the homemade jams and pies from the farm shops.

Things to Do In Bayfield

Blue Vista Farm

Talk about a view that’ll make you say “berry nice!” Blue Vista Farm offers stunning vistas and delicious, organically grown berries and apples. The kids will love the freedom of running through the fields, and we particularly enjoyed their apple cider donuts. Insider tip: Their barn shop sells beautiful handmade gifts—perfect for a unique souvenir or gift. We picked up Wisconsin Maple Syrup here and wish we had bought more. For more details, visit thee Blue Vista Farm Facebook Page .

Things to Do In Bayfield

Rocky Acres

We were able to pick both raspberries and strawberries in mid-July at Rocky Acres and they said their blueberries were almost ready too. They have a road-side stand of pre-picked fruit for convenience. Check out Rocky Acres’ website for more information.

Hillcrest Orchards

The cherries at Hillcrest were the best I’ve ever had. The kids wanted to stay all day even though we were picking in the rain.

There is a minimum U-Pick quantity of 5 pounds. Make sure to pull the stems of the cherries too so they stay fresh longer.

Bayfield Winery and Blue Ox Cidery

Why stop at berries? End your adventure on the “fruit loop” with grapes and apples. At Bayfield Winery and Blue Ox Cidery, you can sample award-winning wines and ciders while the kids enjoy the sprawling outdoor patio, giant connect four, cornhole, or even catch grasshoppers. Our personal favorites were the Ginger Cider and the _ . Our whole family enjoyed the charcuterie board. Insider tip: Don’t miss their seasonal releases, and be sure to take home a bottle (or five).

Visit Bayfield Winery and Blue Ox Cidery’s website to learn more.

Bayfield Maritime Museum

Set sail for an educational adventure at the Bayfield Maritime Museum. With interactive exhibits and fascinating maritime artifacts, it’s a great place for kids to learn about Bayfield’s nautical history. I had a lot of fun helping my five year old with the scavenger hunt. I learned a lot and at the end of our search, Liam was rewarded with a sticker and a free book about a young girl who lived in a local lighthouse with her dad.

Insider tip: The museum offers free admission, but donations are appreciated.

Things to Do In Bayfield

East Dock Park

East Dock Park is a breath of fresh air—literally.

This picturesque park is perfect for a family picnic, with stunning lake views and a playground for the kids. We personally enjoyed watching the boats coming and going from the adjacent marina.

Things to Do In Bayfield

Apostle Island Cruise

Ready for an epic family adventure on the high seas? Because of its massive surface area, Lake Superior is actually an inland sea! From historic lighthouses to majestic sea caves, there’s plenty to see. Our favorite part was spotting the bald eagles, their nest, and 3 babies!

Insider tip: Dress in layers—it can get chilly on the water, even in summer it drops about 10 degrees once you get out toward the islands.

We did a lot of research and phoned a lot of friends asking about the right way to experience the National Seashore with kids as young as ours (3 and 5). We knew it’d be years before we could safely go sea kayaking with them and the speed boats were pricey and lacked bathroom facilities.

The 2.5 hour boat cruise at 4:30pm was just perfect. The kids sat still as they had an active day behind them already, the lighting on the sea caves was optimal, there were concessions and bathrooms available, and they loved being able to move between the top and bottom deck of the boat. We enjoyed the narrated overview.

Insider Tip: Perhaps the best perk of this cruise line is that ages 5 and under only cost $1 to ride! Adults were $52 each. Additionally, carry ins are allowed! Even alcohol can be carried on board so we packed a couple ciders from Blue Ox and lots of snacks for the kids plus ginger cookies in case the waves made anyone feel queasy.

Check out Apostle Island Cruises’ website for more information.

Things to Do In Bayfield

Ferry to Madeline Island

All aboard the Madeline Island Ferry for a scenic trip across Lake Superior. It’s a fun and easy way to reach Madeline Island, and the kids will love looking out for wildlife.

In the winter, the ice would get so thick between Madeline Island and the mainland that the ferry stopped running and they’d drive cars across the ice road! However, conditions haven’t been cold enough since 2015 and therefore the ferry has been running year round.

Insider tip: If you want to explore Big Bay State Park, you’ll want to bring your vehicle across on the Ferry too. Visit Madeline Island Ferry Line’s website for more details.

Things to Do In Bayfield

Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island

Welcome to Big Bay State Park, where the wild things are (don’t worry, we mean deer, birds, and children of course). With hiking trails, a sandy beach, and a 3.5 mile boardwalk trail, it’s a nature lover’s paradise. We loved the peaceful hike to the lagoon.

Insider tip: Remember to pack insect repellent—mosquitoes love Big Bay as much as we do.

Things to Do In Bayfield

Howl Adventure Center and Brewery

Get ready to howl with excitement at the Howl Adventure Center. I’m not trying to be cheesy, apparently its actually a thing kids do; they howl at the giant wolf out front.

From mountain biking to paddle boarding equipment, there’s something for every adrenaline junkie. And don’t worry, parents—the onsite craft brewery has got you covered. Their patio has hammocks, plentiful tables, and yard games.

Insider tip: They offer equipment rental, so no need to lug bulky gear from home.

Visit Howl Adventure Center’s website for more information.

Things to Do In Bayfield

Wonderstate Coffee

Need a caffeine boost after all that adventuring? Head to Wonderstate Coffee. With ethically sourced beans and delicious pastries, it’s a treat for parents and kids alike. I loved their mocha latte.

Insider tip: They offer a variety of dairy alternatives for those with dietary restrictions.

Check out Wonderstate Coffee’s website for more details.

Things to Do In Bayfield

From quirky boutiques to local art galleries, shopping in Bayfield is a treat. My kids loved to peruse Brownstone Centre with me as they had a fun kids section.

Insider tip: The store, Keeper of the Light, chooses one passenger from every Apostle Island Cruise and puts their name above their register. Stop by after your cruise to see if your name was selected for a free gift card!

For a list of local shops, visit Bayfield’s Shopping page.

Things to Do In Bayfield

Cooper Hill Playground

Let the kids burn off some energy at Cooper Hill Playground. My older son turned the tires and ropes into his own Ninja Warrior Course and my youngest was overjoyed to find a sandbox stocked generously with trucks of all kinds.

Insider tip: There’s limited shade, so bring sunscreen and hats on sunny days.

Things to Do In Bayfield

Greunke’s Inn

Hungry? Head to Greunke’s Inn for some classic Wisconsin comfort food. The atmosphere is super fun, it is definitely a place packed with stories.

We loved how casual it was as a easy spot to grab lunch with the kids and then hit their ice cream stand in the parking lot as well for dessert. They had a kids menu, crayons, and coloring pages at the ready for us. Visit Greunke’s Inn’s website for more details.

Things to Do In Bayfield

Frog Bay Tribal National Park

Hop over to Frog Bay Tribal National Park for a fun-filled day of nature exploration. The park is managed by the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, and it’s a great opportunity to teach kids about indigenous cultures. It is the first Tribal National Park in the county and it is free to visit. There is limited parking at the trail head.

Insider tip : At the end of a short, leisurely 10-minute hike, a hidden gem awaited: a beautiful, secluded beach with views of some of the Apostle Islands. My children delighted in crafting boats from driftwood and exploring the diverse array of beetles. Meanwhile, I was captivated by the profusion of butterflies and caterpillars that adorned the trail and the shoreline.

Check out Frog Bay Tribal National Park’s website for more information.

Things to Do In Bayfield

Top Peninsula Beaches

Last but not least, no trip to Bayfield is complete without a visit to the peninsula’s top beaches. Whether you’re constructing sandcastles, frolicking in the waves, or basking in the sun, beach days are an absolute delight for children, even if you have to don a few extra layers to combat the cool breeze that sweeps across Lake Superior.

Here are 3 beaches that were easy kid-pleasers for our family:

  • Sand Bay Beach – Also a fantastic spot for sunset!
  • Corny Beach in Cornucopia
  • Herbster Park and Beach

Insider tip: While Meyer’s Beach is certainly one of the most popular, we were warned by a couple shop keepers that it wouldn’t be a great one to enjoy with little kids. There’s a lot of kayak traffic here as it is the main access points for sea cave kayaking.

For a list of more local beaches, visit Bayfield’s Beaches page . The site is packed with more ideas too of things to do in Bayfield, WI.

The Ultimate Bayfield, Wisconsin Vacation Guide

Why vacation in bayfield, wi, best times to visit bayfield, wi, things to do in bayfield, wi, places to stay in bayfield, wi, estimated bayfield, wi travel budget.

Bayfield is an incredible outdoor getaway that provides something for everyone. The summers are mild and the days are never-ending as the sun sets well after 10 pm and the winter makes for world-class ice fishing and hunting. Combine that with a relatively low price tag and you have yourself the makings of a memorable vacation.

Bayfield is situated on the southern shores of Lake Superior in the northern reaches of Wisconsin. Madeline Island is just a short ferry ride away while the rest of the Apostle Islands are well within reach for a morning excursion. The wilderness is pristine and the skies are vast, making you feel almost insignificant yet calm as the sun basks the greenery that surrounds you.

The people are relaxed and truly love the north woods and if you’ve ever been somewhere people don’t want to be you will know how important having love for your home can be. Welcoming faces abound and even the tourists are respectful of the land and people around them.

Summer is tourist season for Bayfield. As you can imagine, it gets quite cold that far north. Even in the summer temperatures can dip into the 40s at night. Rain is uncommon in the summer with the summer months averaging 8-9 rainy days. This makes for perfect hiking weather and allows you to explore the area without much thought to what the weather is going to be like that day.

Winter is another story. With freezing temperatures creeping in by October, it can be tricky to get around without a four-wheel drive as most of the area is rural and sparsely populated. So sparsely populated and so cold, in fact, that aside from the highways the roads are gravel.

Autumn, on the other hand, is likely the best time overall to visit Bayfield and the surrounding area. The fall colors are absolutely breathtaking and the mountainous terrain allows for spectacular views of the foliage. Animals like deer, elk, and black bears are actively seeking out food and the fish are in a feeding frenzy before slowing down for the winter.

Hunt: There are 430,000 acres of public access land in Bayfield County. This makes for near-limitless possibilities when it comes to hunting. Bayfield sits inside the territory of the Calm Lake elk herd and guided black bear hunts from Outback Guide Service are offered for those seeking more adventurous endeavors.

Fish Lake Superior: We probably don’t have to tell you how good the fishing is in northern Wisconsin, or the great lakes for that matter. Suffice it to say the largest lake trout caught in Bayfield County was 47 lbs and pike, musky, and sturgeon are plentiful. If you’ve never fished in this area it is best to get a guide like Beyond the Catch who knows the lake and the habits of the fish.

Camping: Best done in the summer months, camping is a staple activity in Bayfield. Be aware that mosquitoes can be absolutely horrendous this time of year but are easily managed with bug spray, candles, and torches. Apostle Islands Area Campground is the most popular camping destination in the area but there are numerous others to choose from. Some with full hookups and others are more primitive.

Exploring the Apostle Islands: The Apostle Islands are some of the most beautiful stone formations you will ever encounter in the United States, certainly in the Midwest. Guided kayak tours are available, some even offer weekend-long kayak ventures camping on various islands. We highly recommend exploring these islands as exploring sea caves, looking through eyelets, and paddling through canyon walls are worth the effort.

Cruise Lake Superior: There are cruises available to explore the Apostle Islands and surrounding areas of Lake Superior. These cruises offer sailors an up-close look at the major and minor islands.

Go to Madeline Island: This seasonally populated island is only accessible by the ferry that leaves Bayfield. Miles of beaches adorn the shores and cliffs overlook the cold fresh water below. Mopeds and bicycles are rentable and if you’re in the mood for an eclectic and absurd drinking experience we strongly recommend Tom’s Burned Cafe.

Harbor’s Edge Motel: With a 9/10 rating and well over 400 reviews it’s obvious this place is a traveler’s favorite. The ferry is just a two-minute walk away which puts you within reaching distance of everything this little town has to offer.

A 35-Foot Miniyacht: At some point, most of us have wanted to sleep on our own boat. This 35-foot miniyacht is docked and ready for visitors. This floating room offers visitors a stay they won’t soon forget.

Cabin on Madeline Island: Staying on Madeline Island is best done in a secluded cabin away from the world. Having an outdoor firepit is a must in the summer when the nights are chilly and the sun hasn’t quite gone down yet at 10 pm. Cabins on Madeline Island are truly the way to go.

Old Rittenhouse Inn: Old Rittenhouse Inn is Bayfield’s first country inn and gourmet restaurant offering 20 guest rooms in 2 Victorian-style homes and a private cottage with fireplaces. Whirlpool tubs and brilliant lake views offer a romantic feel from the moment you enter the building.

Seagull Bay Motel: The Seagull Bay delivers curated experiences; from outdoor adventure to homemade ice cream and hand-roasted coffee to locally sourced food or world-renowned music, all within walking distance of your room.

Bayfield is remote and there are no airports nearby. This means driving is essential and so is renting a car if you are flying in. You will have to fly into Duluth or Green Bay and drive the rest of the way with Duluth being your closest and often most affordable choice.

Lodging, flights, and a car rental will start around $700-800. Depending on where you are flying in from it could be a bit cheaper.

The mainland has some nice hiking trails that are a must do while visiting Bayfield, WI. All the hikes are very well maintained, well marked and rather easy to complete.

Hike through the wooded forest and along the Lake Superior shoreline in one trip for two very different views.

For shoreline views hike the Brownstone Trail. This would also be an awesome trail to bike if you brought your own or are willing to rent bikes in town.

Head to the Big Ravine for lots of trails through the forest, many of which offer great views of Lake Superior in the distance. The West Rim Trail takes you along the Big Ravine which is a very unique site to see. The Iron Bridge Trail is very scenic and gives you a remarkable view of town and Lake Superior.

If you have a car and are willing to hop in it for a 20 minute ride, we highly recommend heading to Meyer’s Beach for a day and hiking the Lakeshore Trail. This trail was our absolute favorite and took us up close to some incredible sea caves! A very cool and unique hiking experience that is absolutely one of the best things to do in Bayfield WI.

Explore the surrounding Apostle Islands

A must do while visiting Bayfield is exploring the 22 Apostle Islands that lie off the Bayfield Peninsula. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has so much to offer and the best way to see it is from the water.

Book an Apostle Island cruise or kayak tour to explore the incredibly unique sea caves, historic lighthouses, sandy beaches, nature carved rock formations and more!  You can even use this opportunity to explore and hike on one of the quiet islands.

There is no question that one of the best things to do in Bayfield WI is seeing the Apostle Islands from the water.

Complete the Fruit Loop – Orchards and Wineries

Bayfield, WI is home to a bunch of fruit orchards and wineries, each providing their own unique experience. Some stops along the fruit loop are a small stand selling just apples, while others are huge farms with a big store full of goodies.

Visiting the orchards and wineries is one of the best things to do in Bayfield WI. While you can find almost every berry you can think of if it’s in season, Bayfield is known for its apples. WOW, are they delicious!!

Some of the orchards we really enjoyed were Bayfield Apple Co and Hauser’s Superior View Farm but we recommend driving the loop and stopping at every one you can!

Visit a Distillery

The Copper Crow Distillery is a fantastic distillery between Bayfield and Red Cliff. They offer an incredible menu full of tasty cocktails that will make your mouth water. We wish we could have tried them all, but that probably wouldn’t have ended well.

Unfortunately, tours are temporarily suspended at the moment, but you can watch them at work from the windows while you sip your cocktail.

Shop Downtown Bayfield

Shopping is one of the best things to do in Bayfield WI. The downtown area is very small and all the shops are located within a few square block radius. Spend a half a day meandering the streets and popping into every store you pass.

Each store is incredibly unique and one of a kind. From jewelry, hand knitted clothes, decor, candy and more, everyone is sure to find something they love. Support the local small business owners and pick something (or a few things) to take home with you.

Ferry to Madeline Island

A visit to Bayfield, WI is not complete without checking out Madeline Island. It is a smooth 3 mile ferry that takes you from the picturesque town of Bayfield to La Pointe.

The ferry schedule changes throughout the year so check the schedule ahead of time to plan your visit. Bikes, cars and even pets are allowed on the ferry.

You are free to get out of your car and I recommend you do to see the views from the observation deck during the ride. The 25 minute ride provides incredible views of Madeline Island and the other Apostle Islands

Things to do on Madeline Island

Big bay state park.

The main reason to head to Madeline Island, in our opinion, is Big Bay State Park . Once off the ferry, make your way to this 2,350 acre state park for fantastic beaches, trails, hiking, cliffs and dramatic views of Lake Superior. With 4 miles of Lake Superior shoreline, 1.5 miles of sandy beach, mile long boardwalk and viewing platform there is plenty to do!

Eagle’s Nest is a great place to go to for incredible cliff views. The shoreline is lined with layers of rock to explore and it’s quite a unique site to see. Some people even cliff jump into Lake Superior here, if you are brave enough! The average water temperature of Lake Superior is 54 degrees!

Hike the Lagoon Ridge trail for views over the beautiful Lake Superior lagoon, or the Boardwalk trail for views along the lagoon and to explore the Lake Superior shoreline and sandy beaches. These trails can even be done together to make a 4 mile long loop trail!

Check out the small town of La Pointe, WI which is the only “city” on Madeline Island.

It is worth a short visit to do some souvenir shopping, grab some lunch at one of the local restaurants or visit the Heritage Center to learn more about the history of Madeline Island.

Joni’s Beach

Joni’s beach is a small but nice beach near the ferry on the edge of town. If you are looking for a little more beach time before you head back to the mainland, Joni’s beach is a nice place to spend the afternoon!

It has a small playground for kids, a picnic area and a dock. It’s a great place to lay down in the sand, relax and take in the view.

Where to Eat

Downtown Bayfield, WI has a handful of restaurants to choose from. Some offer fantastic lakeshore views, others offer tasty fresh fish or fun drinks! It’s hard to know where to go! Here are our recommendations on where to eat in Bayfield Wisconsin.

Many Penny Bistro – A great relaxed atmosphere with delicious food. My favorite was the gyro and Zach’s favorite was the Mediterranean salad with falafel. We ended up here a few nights because I couldn’t stop thinking about that gyro.

Sargent Pepperoni’s – A great place for takeout! The pizza is huge and ended up giving us 3 tasty meals.

The Copper Trout – Try a delicious Italian dinner with some fresh fish!

Wonder State Coffee – A very cute coffee shop with yummy breakfast sandwiches to fill your belly before a day of adventure.

Other places we ate that I wouldn’t exactly recommend were Pier Plaza Restaurant and Greunke’s First Street Inn & Dining.

There are many wonderful places to stay in Bayfield, WI. We stayed in an awesome 1 bedroom Airbnb that was a quick 4 minute drive to town yet felt like we were in the middle of the country! There was a ton of land to explore and the view from the windows overlooking Lake Superior was breathtaking. We loved watching the sunrise over the lake every morning with our coffee and witnessing the wildlife and nature all around us.

For timeless lakeside charms, the small town of Bayfield, set serenely near the tip of land jutting out into dark blue Lake Superior depths, shouldn't be missed. This is also the scenic end of WI 13 as it meanders on through from Superior, a route that achieves, at plenty of points along the way, postcard proportions. Bayfield itself won't disappoint, and has enough charisma to entice visitors into lingering on longer than it takes to find the ferry Apostle Islands bound.

Sailing ships and shadowed island shapes break the Lake Superior horizon stretched out beyond Bayfield on a sunny day. If you're looking for things to do in town, stop at the Heritage Museum, wander through the Bayfield Maritime Museum, and catch, if you can, a summer performance in the big blue tent, Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua.

For a spot of exercise, rent bicycles and peddle scenic routes winding along through the interior, or, in winter, test runs and cross-country ski trails at the Mt Ashwabay Ski Area. Dog-sledding and snowshoeing are also popular cold-weather pursuits, and accessible to interested visitors.

Though a trip out to the Apostle Islands is a must, it's easy to get time on the water closer to hand, hopping charter excursions for an afternoon of fishing, or kayaking, in fine weather, around Bayfield or out to the islands.

It's an enlightening introduction to the lakes that travelers will find when stopping in at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center, south of Bayfield and just west of Ashland. Leave time for a tour on your way in to Ashland, where a megalith-like iron ore dock awaits, a reminder of this region's industrial past. Now more ecologically minded, Ashland is home to the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute of Northland College ? wander through during term time to learn more and see some nature-friendly art. Get in a bit of fresh air strolling trail stretches of the Tri-County Recreation Trail, splashing about in the lake on sunny days, or checking out the numerous waterfalls gushing through the region.

Bayfield is 77 miles, along WI 13, from Superior, and 23 miles from Ashland.

Bayfield's summer season begins with the annual Bayfield in Bloom festival, which is kicked off by Wisconsin Public Radio's "Garden Talk" with Larry Meiller broadcast from the Bayfield Lakeside Pavilion.

While there are interesting things to see and do at most times in Bayfield, we most enjoy the festive atmosphere of the annual fall Apple Festival - which draws up to 60,000 people during the 3 day weekend! See our Bayfield Events Calendar (below) for more ideas on things to do and see in Bayfield.

During the winter and holiday season there are several Christmas and Holiday activities going on commencing with the holiday tree lighting ceremony on the day after Thanksgiving. The Rittenhouse Inn has a nice Thanksgiving dining and lodging package that we will catch this year. When winter arrives, there is cross-country skiing and downhill skiing at Mt. Ashwabay, the big Sled Dog race, the fantastic Bayfield Ice Caves and winter carnivals in Bayfield and Mount Ashwabay.

Bayfield residents have done a fine job preserving the historic character of the town. A number are listed on the National Register of historic sites.

Among the historic structures is this 1912 Iron Bridge constructed by Wausau Iron Works. Underneath the Iron Bridge, there's also a neat little wooded hiking trail running up the ravine. It is so secluded it is hard to grasp you are only minutes from "downtown" Bayfield.

Looking for the best things to do in Bayfield, WI? From the best places to hike near Bayfield, how to kayak the Apostle Islands Sea Caves, to the best family-friendly beaches near Bayfield, I’ve got you covered!

Why me? Hi! my name is Maddy, and I’m a five year Lake Superior paddler, with two + years of guiding in Bayfield and the Apostle Islands! I’ve been to every single island except Eagle, the Twins, and Long, and I’ve done every single activity on this list (except sailing, because I am a broke paddling guide). This article is designed to help you find the best things to do in the Apostle Islands for your skill and comfort level.

Yellow Kayak at the Apostle Islands Sea Caves

Best Things to do in Bayfield, Wisconsin and the Apostle Islands:

Bayfield and the Apostle Islands are on the land of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe. Keep in mind when recreating that many of the areas in the Apostle Islands and throughout the Bayfield Peninsula have cultural and historical significance. For this reason especially, be sure to pack out everything you bring including toilet paper, orange peels, ect. Avoid crushing plant life, “improving” trails or campsites, and stay on the trail when hiking.

It was not until the year 2021 that the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe flag was raised at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Visitor’s Center.

Climbing the cliffs and caves within the Apostle Islands is prohibited by the National Park. Be aware that conditions on Lake Superior are unpredictable and water temperatures extremely cold. Watch young children closely when swimming. Do not attempt to kayak Lake Superior, to the Sea Caves, and most especially to the islands without a guide or open water coastal kayaking skills.

Note! This post contains affiliate links. This means if you buy something based off my recommendation, I may make a small kickback at no additional cost to you.

What to pack for a Trip to Bayfield, Wisconsin:

Summers on Lake Superior can be chilly, especially as you visit islands on the Lake. For a list of what to pack for kayak camping specifically, visit 15 tips for beginner kayak campers .

  • 2 lightweight, long hiking pants. I wear a size 8 and am short, and find the  REI trailmade  to be super flattering as well as the  Kuhl freeflex .
  • A pair of  shorts , and  yoga pants with pockets
  • A fleece. Any fleece will do, but I really love my  Patagonia Synchilla
  • Wool baselayers. Five years of heavy paddling and my  Smartwool baselayers  are the only wool baselayers I’ve had that have really stood the test of time. For seven days, pack four baselayer tops.
  • Study hiking boots. I like my  Briger Mids.  Working in outdoor retail I literally never had anyone try on these shoes and not buy them. Pair with  Darn Tough  hiking socks and pack at least five pairs. In the alpine areas,  trekking poles  are also a great choice!
  • hiking sandals
  • Quick dry shots: I like Patagonia Baggies
  • A puffy jacket. It can be cool even in the summer near the lakeshore, especially evenings. My partner Andy (also a wilderness guide) swears by the  Patagonia Nano Puff . I like my  Helly Hansen Liftloft .
  • If camping, a tent, packable sleeping bag ( Nemo Disco ) and pad ( comfortable sleeping pad ):  Read my budget tent recommendations here!
  • A day hiking pack: I love my  Perimeter 35L . I was gifted this pack a few years back and it’s still my go-to day pack; a savvy packer can easily pack for a seven day hiking trip in this bag.
  • A raincoat. I love the  Moss Raincoat from Helly Hansen ; It’s affordable, cute, and super durable.

Looking for what to pack for your sea kayaking trip? Check out a Beginner’s Guide to Overnight Sea Kayaking!

30) hike the meyers beach sea caves lakeshore trail.

If you can only do one thing while visiting Bayfield, WI hike the Meyers Beach Sea Caves Lakeshore Trail! This trail is an out-and-back with some uphills leading to beautiful overlooks of the Apostle Islands Sea Caves. Be sure to pay the $5 parking fee at the trailhead!

View of the Crack from the Meyers Beach Lakeshore Trail in the Apostle ISlands

On summer weekends this parking lot fills to capacity! Consider arriving before 10am to snag a parking spot, or later than 4pm. Milage is variable depending on how far you choose to hike, but most people hike between four and five miles to reach all the best sea caves!

29) Take a Guided Sea Kayak Tour of the Meyers Beach Sea Caves

Wondering how to visit the Bayfield, WI sea caves? Some of the biggest and easiest to reach sea caves near Bayfield can be accessed from Meyers Beach. In order to do this paddle safely, book a guided tour.

bayfield wisconsin travel guide

Why should I book a guided tour of the Apostle Islands Sea Caves?

Listen, I get it. Tours are expensive and you bought a Wilderness Systems Pungo , why would you book a tour? You’re an experienced kayaker! You kayak every weekend on Lake Minnetonka!

Meyers Beach is in a bay. It’s about a one-mile paddle to the first cliffs, and farther than that to the first sea caves. Around the time you reach Keyhole Arch, you’re more exposed to the northeast and southwest, directions which the wind rises most afternoons. It doesn’t take very much wind to kick up 1-2 foot waves, which hit the cliffs, bounce off, and double up.

It only takes one mistake to capsize your Pungo or Sundolphin, or god forbid, inflatable kayak. Once you’re in the water outside of your open cockpit kayak, it will fill with water and sink. In 50 degree water, which on Lake Superior is expected even in summer months, you have 10 minutes until hypothermia makes self rescue impossible and about an hour until you become fully unresponsive.

It’s a mile+ swim just to reach the beach away from the cliffs. It’s really important to note if you did not book a guided tour, the guides out there have to take care of the safety of their group before they help you. While there are enough people at Meyers that someone will likely contact NPS for you, and there’s a good chance you’ll be rescued in time, that is not a promise and it’s likely you will loose your boat.

Just book a guided tour. I recommend Lost Creek Adventures , Trek & Trail , or Whitecap Kayak . Trek & Trail also offers safety courses; if sea kayaking is a skill you want to learn, take a safety course with them!

Kayaking the crack, a sea cave in the apostle islands

Why shouldn’t I bring my kids sea kayaking to the Apostle Islands Sea Caves?

Most safe outfitters will not take children under 14 sea kayaking on Lake Superior in tandem kayaks. If an outfitter is willing to do this, this is a red flag! Children under 14 are usually put in triple kayaks as it takes two people capable of responding to instructions and paddling in an emergency to safely kayak on Lake Superior. No safe outfitter will take out children under five in any circumstances.

28) Go to Applefest, the iconic Fall Festival in Bayfield, Wisconsin

Every fall, apple-lovers descend on Bayfield looking to eat apple fry bread, hear live music, and drink spiked cider! While most people visit Bayfield in the summer, check out Applefest for fall colors and one of the most lively events way Up North.

27) Day Trip to Madeline Island, the easiest island to get to from Bayfield

A Madeline Island day trip is one of the best things to do when visiting Bayfield! Grab drinks at Tom’s Burned Down Cafe , head out to Big Bay State Park to swim and hike, or bike the island!

While there is lots to do on Madeline Island for adults, the island is not particularly kid friendly. Families with kids will have better luck sticking to Bayfield.

Based in Duluth, Minnesota? Check out the Best Hiking Trails near Duluth !

26) check out the copper crow distillery.

Tucked away in the woods near Bayfield, Wisconsin, Copper Crow is the first Native-owned distillery in the United States, and it alone is a bucket list worthy trip! From the picturesque woodland setting, to the unique and delicious drinks, Copper Crow Distillery is the best place to unwind after a long hard day on the water.

One of my favorite things to do in Bayfield is to grab a hammock and head to the Copper Crow to spend an afternoon relaxing in the pines with a drink.

25) Visit Balancing Rock on Stockton Island

Looking for what is easily one of the seven natural wonders of Lake Superior? Head out to Stockton Island to check out Balancing Rock, a unique Lake Superior sea stack.

Image of a sea kayaker in front of Balancing Rock in the Apostle Islands

Stockton Island can only be reached by water. Right now, the only way to see this sea stack is to sail or motor out, or to take an overnight sea kayaking trip out this way.

24) visit cornucopia beach.

Looking for the best family-friendly beach near Bayfield? Pack a picnic blanket and head to Corny Beach in Cornucopia for shallow, warmer water swimming on Lake Superior in the adorable fishing town of Cornucopia. This beach is not far from Meyers Beach, but just as nice and likely to be much less crowded.

Corny Beach is also one of the best places to view the Northern Lights in Bayfield! Bring a picnic blanket and watch the northern horizon!

23) Camp on Oak Island

Looking for one of the best campsites in the Great Lakes Region? The north beach campsite on Oak Island (permits required, most accessible to sea kayakers) is the most beautiful place to camp in the Apostle Islands.

This beachside campsite has direct swimming access, Lake Superior views, nearby hidden caves to kayak, and expansive views of the outer ring of the Apostle Islands to the north. Guided overnight kayak tours are the best way to reach this beautiful campsite! While camping here, hike up to the Oak Island Apostles Overlook at sunset to watch the light fade over the islands from above!

Bucket list Stay in Bayfield: St. James Social historic hotel

If you’re looking for a unique place to stay in downtown Bayfield, check out the St. James Social! This romantic boutique hotel meets luxury hostel is a historic renovation of the original hotel, with a sauna and cold plunge, rooftop lounge with lake views and restaurant and bar downstairs.

bayfield wisconsin travel guide

St. James Social is located right in the heart of downtown Bayfield, easy walking distance to food, shopping, bars, and the Madeline Island Ferry.

22) Take a Hardcore Kayak Day Trip to Sand Island

Most visitors head to the Meyers Beach sea caves! The Meyers Beach Caves are some of the largest and most impressive sea caves, but tend to be crowded. Did you know that most of the 21 Apostle Islands have sea caves on them?

Sand Island is home to some of the deepest and darkest sea caves, offering passage deep into the island. Book a long day trip out to Sand Island with Lost Creek Adventures . On this trip, you’ll kayak nine miles in potentially difficult conditions, check out beautiful sea caves, and even hike to the Sand Island historic lighthouse.

A day trip to Sand Island is one of the best things to do in the Apostle Islands for adventure enthusiasts looking for a wild story!

21) Visit Howl Adventure Center for Live Music

Howl Adventure Center is the coolest new thing in Bayfield, WI for outdoor lovers! Here you can both shop for and demo gear, and in the evening you can snack on local food truck tacos, have a beer and listen to live music by a campfire.

20) Paddle to Honeymoon Rock

Looking for a unique place to kayak in the Apostle Islands? Book a full day Basswood Island trip with Trek & Trail to check out the unique Honeymoon Bluff sea stack, paddle over the Fedora shipwreck and sample some of best paddling on Lake Superior!

Paddling to Honeymoon Rock is one of the best things to do in Bayfield and the Apostle Islands for outdoorsy people looking to head off the beaten path.

19) Take a Cruise with Apostle Islands Cruises: Best thing to do in Bayfield Wisconsin (without kayaking!)

One of the best things to do in the Apostle Islands that isn’t kayaking is to take a cruise of the Apostle Islands . Cruises will take you out into the islands to sightsee. A cruise is the best way to see the beautiful and remote Devil’s Island sea caves without paddling out to them.

The cruise line sometimes offers backpacker shuttles to Stockton and Oak Island but has not been offering these options in recent years. As of 2023, there are no commercial backpacker shuttles out into the Apostle Islands. If you hear otherwise please let me know so I can update this!

THE 2024 UPDATE YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR: Hop on that shuttle baby , you can now backpack Stockton and Oak again! Thanks Elizabeth from Trek and Trail for the update!

A few tips for Cruising the Apostle Islands from Bayfield, Wisconsin:

Bring extra layers! As you head out to the Outer Ring of Islands, you will experience as much as a 20 degree temperature change.

This trip might be boring for small children. A cruise of the Apostles is a three hour sit and sightsee and listen.

18) Plan the ultimate Midwest Adventure and sea kayak to Devil’s Island

Devil’s Island is arguably the most beautiful of the Apostle Islands, and it’s also the hardest island to reach. Exposed to almost every wind direction, Devil’s Island is often blasted by waves. Once on one of the tours I guided a participants got mad when he realized we weren’t going to Devil’s Island (there are no day trips that go to Devils).

Sea Kayaking Devils Island Sea Caves Bayfield Apostle Islands

I laughed.

In my two years of guiding in the Apostle’s, I never made it out to Devil’s Island. In order to sea kayak Devil’s Island, you pretty much need at least three days and perfect wind conditions. You can’t just decide you want to kayak to Devil’s Island on a certain day. That’s not how Lake Superior works.

I finally made it to Devil’s Island in the summer of 2021 as an expedition member on this National Geographic Trip. I got to spend three whole days camping on and helping photograph the island, and it was incredible. (The campsite is closed but we had park permission to camp on the Island). The caves themselves were incredible, but even more incredible was the ecosystem. There were massive birds and huge snowshoe hares, mushrooms and species of plants only seen in the arctic, leftover from the last ice ages that have survived on the chilly shore of Lake Superior, literally frozen in time. For more on local lore & natural history, check out the end result article here !

Here’s the best way to visit Devil’s Island in the Apostle Islands:

The best way to get out to Devil’s Island in the Apostle Islands is to literally make it a lifelong goal. Start by booking a 1-2 night overnight trip to gain kayaking experience. Take a safety course. Book an outer ring overnight kayaking trip. If you don’t make it out the first time, book another trip for the next year. Eventually you’ll make it to Devil’s.

And I promise you, there is nothing sweeter than experiencing the natural cathedral that Devil’s Island is than being denied entry a few times, and then finally, by the power of your own kayak, making it out to that incredible place. It’s totally worth it. Plus now that you’ve got all that experience you can sign up for some of the other hardcore adventure kayak trips in the Great Lakes. The Pukaskwa is calling.

10) Eat at the Fat Radish in Washburn

Check out the Fat Radish in Washburn for one of the best places to eat near Bayfield! The Fat Radish has delicious farm to table healthy food. This is a popular restaurant so reservations are recommended.

9) Kayak the Fedora Shipwreck

Looking for a beginner sea kayak trip on Lake Superior? Kayak to the Fedora Shipwreck launching from the Red Cliff Casino. While this route still sometimes sees big waves, this route is more likely to be calm than many of the other kayaking routes on Lake Superior, and great for people with L2+ coastal kayaking experience looking to experience Lake Superior.

sea kayaking over the shallow wreck of the Fedora in Bayfield Wisconsin easy kayaking

This is an alternate tour site for many of the Meyers Beach sea caves tours, and some outfitters offer this route as a longer paddle as a half day trip.

While this trip is more beginner-friendly, I still do not recommend kayaking on Lake Superior without a sea kayak and ACA L2-3 experience OR an experienced guide! This is a beginner trip for sea kayakers, but could still quickly become a dangerous trip for beginner kayakers, particularly when strong south winds, east winds, or northeast winds are involved.

Don’t believe me about big waves on Lake Superior? Keep scrolling!

8) Watch a Gale from the Meyers Beach Lakeshore Trail

One of the best things to do in Bayfield if your kayak tour get cancelled is to hike the Meyers Beach Lakeshore Trail. This is especially true if your kayak tour was cancelled well in advance! That means that there are probably very big waves at the sea caves, and you can watch them roll in from above!

Waves at the Sea Caves at the Lakeshore Trail, a hiking trail near Bayfield Wisconsin

That’s about a 30ft cliff there! On the left hand side of the photo, there’s a five ft tall sea arch that is completely covered by the wave itself. Sea spray from the wave reaches the top of the cliff.

7) Canoe Bark Bay Slough

Bark Bay Slough is a unique Lake Superior coastal slough filled with floating islands, and the perfect place for protected paddling. Bark Bay is the best spot in Bayfield to kayak without a guide.

6) Mountain Bike Mount Ashwabay

Mountain Biking Mount Ashwabay is one of the best adventurous things to do near Bayfield, Wisconsin. Here you’ll find plenty of single track loops of varying difficulty levels. From the top of Mount Ashwabay check out sweeping views of Bayfield and the Apostle Islands.

5) Hike to the Oak Island Apostle Islands Overlook

Looking for one of the coolest hikes in the Apostle Islands? On Oak Island you can hike out to high bluffs over Lake Superior for beautiful views of the Apostle Islands! This hike is only accessible by boat, so you’ll either have to find a boat to take you out or book an overnight sea kayaking tour.

4) Drive the Fruit Loop

Bayfield, Wisconsin is a haven for fruit trees! Here you can find apples, strawberries, cherries, blueberries and more all grown on the Bayfield Peninsula. Drive the Fruit Loop to check out local fruit stands and maybe even find a pie!

3) Book a Sailing Charter

Looking for one of the most incredible ways to see the Apostle Islands? Book a sailing charter with Dreamcatcher Sailing to visit some of the more remote hidden gems of the Apostle Islands without having to paddle yourself out.

2) Visit Coco’s Bakery in Washburn

Looking for the most delicious cookies and best breakfast in Bayfield? Head down to Washburn, Wisconsin to enjoy the wonderful CoCo’s Bakery .

1) Overnight Sea Kayak the Outer Ring of the Apostle Islands

The absolute best way to see the Apostle Islands is to book an overnight sea kayaking trip into the islands! I recommend Lost Creek Adventures , Trek & Trail , or Whitecap Kayak for overnight tours.

image of a beautiful wooded state forest campsite near the pictured rocks

Outer Ring Trips are generally best suited for people with sea kayak camping experience, but they really are the experience of a lifetime. Camp on remote island beaches, cook over a fire, swim in the moonlight, and paddle some of the secret sea caves on the outer Apostle Islands.

To experience the best views in the the Apostle Islands, book a 4-7 day overnight sea kayaking trip!

FAQs About Visiting Bayfield, Wisconsin and the Apostle Islands Sea Caves:

I’ve been asked lots of questions on how to visit the Apostle Islands and how to visit Bayfield! Hopefully the list above answered what the best things are to do in Bayfield and the Apostle Islands! Here are a few more frequently asked questions about visiting Bayfield:

Where can I rent kayaks in Bayfield, WI ?

No safe outfitter will rent kayaks for Lake Superior without proof of an ACA Coastal Kayaking safety course. This is true throughout the whole of Lake Superior. Outfitters renting kayaks for Lake Superior without safety courses are not operating within the recommendations of the American Canoe Association or Coast Guard– because these outfitters have already shown disregard for safety guidelines on Lake Superior, I personally would be suspicious of the safety of the equipment rented.

See point 13 for how to take a safety course in order to rent kayaks for the Apostle Islands sea caves.

he easiest way to check if an outfitter operates safe kayaking tours is to read the reviews! If they have negative reviews detailing shady behavior (ie, taking money and not calling back, unclear directions on where to meet, multiple stories of irresponsible guides) you might want to skip. In addition, you can call in advance and ask if guides are certified or trained with with the American Canoe Association. Often, ACA certification requirements are clearly indicated on the outfitters website.

For example, on Trek & Trail’s website it clearly states in the bottom right footer it clearly states “each spring (and weekly training meetings) our guides and mentors work through ACA Level 1-3 and WFA certification”.

How likely is my Apostle Islands Sea Caves Tour to be cancelled?

That’s really hard to say. Waves are more likely to pick up in the afternoon than in the morning, and cancelling a tour is generally at the discretion of your guide. Check the marine forecast to gauge potential waves in the area. Generally, a forecast of waves 2 ft or less means your tour is a go! A forecast of 1-3 feet means your tour will be choppy and you won’t be able to enter smaller caves.

Your tour might be cancelled. A three foot wave is tall enough that if there is a wave between you and your guide, they will not be able to see you.

No beginner kayak tours should head out intentionally in waves larger than three feet. On overnight tours, you may encounter larger waves at the discretion of the guides.

Nervous about your Apostle Islands kayak trip? Talk to your guide! Your guide will not take you anywhere unsafe! In two years of commercial guiding on Lake Superior I’ve only had three boats capsize– one on an overnight, and two on day trips in relatively calm water (looking over the edge of the boat!). I’ve never had anyone capsize on a private tour (I’m currently not doing custom tours anymore!).

When is the best time of year to kayak the Apostle Islands Sea Caves?

Late July and Early August see warmer water temperatures and more calm days than the rest of the year. My favorite time to visit is September when the crowds die down, but you are more likely to experiences waves in this time. Objectively, late summer is the best time of year to kayak the Apostle Islands Sea Caves.

How much should I tip my kayak guide in the Apostle Islands?

For a half day trip in the Apostle Islands, tip your kayak guide at least ten dollars per person in your group. On a full day trip, tip around fifteen dollars per person in your group. For an overnight sea kayaking trip, tip your guide at least twenty dollars per person, per day or more. On overnight tours keep in mind that your guide is cooking and cleaning for you as well as keeping you safe on the water.

Is Bayfield, Wisconsin a good place to visit with kids?

While there are things to do with kids in Bayfield and the Apostle Islands, Bayfield is not a super kid-friendly destination. Most safe outfitters will not book young kids on kayak tours, and most of the things to do in the area are either very active or involve drinking.

The North Shore of Lake Superior might be a more kid friendly destination with easier hikes and lots to do with children.

Winter in Bayfield, WI
