32 Best Women's Loungewear Sets for Long Travel Days
By Madison Flager and Paris Wilson
All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.
Some may argue that traveling by plane is an occasion to dress up, but for most of us at Traveler, comfort is the main priority when planning a transit day ensemble: You want something loose enough that you won't need to readjust (or worse, unbutton) a few hours into a flight or road trip, but put-together enough to feel that you've made a switch out of pajamas and into a true outfit. Luckily, there is no shortage of loungewear sets these days.
Read on for 32 of the best loungewear sets to add to your travel wardrobe , many of which are sitting in our editors' dresser drawers. From upscale sweatsuits to cozy cashmere knits, they'll keep you comfy whether you're sitting on a plane, train, or in the passenger seat, and will get a re-wear on lazy vacation days when the only item on your to-do list is lounging around the Airbnb .
This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date. Additional reporting by Meaghan Kenny.
Buck Mason is at the forefront of elevated essentials. The Vintage Interloop set features an oversized crew that has a relaxed fit all around and thinly ribbed stiching on the cuffs to give more structure to the slouchy sleeves. The French terry sweatpants are slimming and so comfortable. Each set looks slightly different than the other, thanks to Buck Mason's Venice Wash technique that creates its cool, vintage look.
Kim Kardashian's shapewear and loungewear brand Skims never misses when it comes to cozy sets. The Cotton Fleece collection is a more sporty take on classic loungewear. The soft fleece shorts have an interior drawstring at the waist for a more customizable fit.
If you prefer something a little more roomy, the Oversized Tee and Harem Pant set from This is J is for you. It’s perfect for long-haul flights and road trips where comfort is at the top of your list, but you don’t want to step out in your pajamas. The soft, moisture-wicking fabric will keep you dry and comfortable whether you’re snuggled up on a train or plane.
This set is made for cold weather. The thick fabric will keep you warm and toasty whether you’re hanging inside with friends or out sightseeing. The top has a dropped shoulder sleeve that looks more oversized while the pants feature a wide-leg with a drawstring waist.. The set comes in 10 solid colors that are easy to pair with a slip-on sneaker or Ugg boots .
The soft ribbed knit of the Muse hoodie and sweatpant offers a lot of dimension to the duo. The set is lightweight enough that it can be worn over workout clothes without any bulkiness. The high-waisted joggers pair well with the cropped hoodie and offer a more chic silhouette.
You’ll be comfortable from head to toe with this ultra-soft pullover and pant set. The pants have a classic ‘70s wide-leg silhouette accompanied by an elastic waistband, while the pullover has a polo-inspired collar and a slightly cropped hem. An all-white set never goes out of style and will look great with a white sneaker .
Made from a blend of merino wool and cashmere, the luxuriously soft fabric of the Cashmino Tunic hoodie and joggers is hard to beat. We love this set for its sophisticated yet cozy look.
The name tells you everything you need to know. The Coziest Cashmere Blend hoodie and jogger are ultra-soft. The fabric is warm yet breathable and the fact that it’s a blend gives you peace of mind that it won’t be ruined in the washing machine.
Traveler editors swear by Lunya's washable silk pajamas and cashmere Travel Set . The brand’s Silksweats complete its holy trinity of comfort. With a sherpa interior and thermoregulating abilities, you'll be comfortable without overheating in this set. Bonus: Both pieces are reversible so you can have two looks for one.
We're always raving about Girlfriend Collective, a size-inclusive, sustainably- and ethically-made brand. While much of the ReSet collection is sold out, this cropped sweater and pant set are a great replacement, made from half recycled, half organic cotton. They're available in your classic neutral colors, as well as this rich wine hue.
Late last summer, True & Co. dropped its first loungewear line, expanding upon its uber-comfortable bras and undergarments. Rather than stick with the same basic cuts, they launched with a cropped wide leg pant and oversized long sleeve, both in a soft, jersey sheet-like fabric. Order the separates in blush, charcoal heather, mushroom (shown above), or crushed berry.
There's something to be said for a zip-up sweatshirt, even if they've largely been replaced by pullovers of late. For one, if your temperature flips from chilly to warm, you can regulate without bothering your seatmate while trying to take off your hoodie. We're a fan of the sweatpants, too: the deep pockets, cuffed ankles, and cashmere fabric are all plusses.
A new addition to OV's ultra-soft, lightweight, and durable CloudKnit line-up : this boxy T-shirt with a slightly cropped fit. It comes in charcoal, navy, mocha, fog white, and jasmine blue, all of which will match your go-to black leggings or joggers .
Awarded one of Oprah's Favorite Things in 2020, I was eager to put on Cozy Earth's ultra-soft joggers, and am happy to report they lived up to the hype. Made of a mix of premium viscose from bamboo, acrylic, and spandex, they're smooth and cool to the touch, and have a loose but not baggy fit. I've worn them a ton on WFH days, and would happily fly in them. Snag a matching pullover if you like the matching set look.
San Francisco–based Quince launched a maternity collection, which includes a nursing-friendly long sleeve and lounge joggers with an adjustable drawstring waistband. All of the collection's pieces are made with renewable materials like Tencel lyocell, a biodegradable fiber made from wood pulp; mulberry silk, a hypoallergenic and thermoregulating fabric; the company's SuperSoft fabric, a blend of recycled polyester and tencel; and sustainably- and humanely-sourced Mongolian cashmere.
Outdoor Voices’ All Day hoodie and sweatpants set really is made to wear from dusk to dawn. It aims to be the softest pair of sweats you will ever wear, and stacks up, with a CloudKnit fabric that feels as cozy as your most worn-in pair of pajamas. The sweatpants are high-rise and more fitted toward the bottom to give the most flattering look possible, too. The pieces can be bought individually and come in six different colors, from neutral charcoal to a rich Kalamata purple.
While former Traveler editor Jessica Puckett's favorite cashmere set has since sold out, Cuyana's Pima outfit is another great option for plane travel and lounging, particularly in warmer environments, as the material is soft, smooth, and breathable.
Former Traveler editor Corina Quinn turned us on to Vuori's DreamKnit Collection hoodie and jogger set. “The DreamKnit feels like a cloud—it's so soft and cozy, yet lightweight, so you don't get too hot or too cool in them,” she says. “On top of that, because there are a few different models of jogger pants and tops, my friends and I have all found a model that's flattering for us.” For a pair of sweats that make you feel like you’re wearing a real outfit without actually doing so, Vuori’s unbelievably soft, stretchy sets are an easy pick.
Friend + Folk is a size- and gender-inclusive brand that prioritizes a limited carbon footprint, and puts it into practice by way of free carbon neutral shipping, recyclable and plastic-free packaging, limited batch-production, and more. The Joon joggers are a favorite—the fit is roomy and comfortable yet still tailored, and the zippered pockets are ideal for stashing AirPods, lip balm, and other odds and ends without worrying they'll fall out as you dash through the airport. Pair them with the Perry pullover and you've got a new airport uniform.
Lululemon may be best known for its leggings and workout wear, but don't skip over the brand's loungewear. This set is made out of a smooth Softstreme material that is stretchy and feels smooth against your skin. It's a great loungewear set to wear if you run hot.
We love this Madewell number, made of a fleece-like Superbrushed terry fabric. Wide legs and a loose fit make it just the kind of thing we want to wear on long travel days, and the patch pockets are much appreciated. Since it does have tank top-style straps, bring a cardigan or other added layer for the plane.
Allbirds has been expanding its offerings from shoes and accessories into athletic and loungewear, using the same environmentally conscious (and carbon neutral) production process. This crewneck and sweats set is best for loungewear purists who want something simple, and comes in white or black, as well as limited-edition colors like hazy pine, terracotta, and true navy.
Some loungewear is better suited for inside wear, like this cozy ribbed shorts set. Wear the pullover, with its bell sleeves and slit in the back, over leggings for long-haul flights. The stretchy shorts have a fairly short inseam, so they'll likely be more comfortable as a sleeping short or loungewear piece to change into when you arrive at your hotel or rental house.
This two-piece set might be the closest thing to sleepwear on this list, and yet is still cute enough to feel confident while wearing through the airport. It comes in a dozen colors, from basic heather gray to bold indigo blue, and pairs slouchy, relaxed fit pants with a scoop-neck button-up henley.
If this brand sounds familiar, you may have worn one of its face masks—initially a scrubs outfitter, Jaanuu has since ventured into loungewear. The result is a super stretchy, super soft hoodie and jogger set you'll want to wear on every flight (and maybe to a workout class, too).
Sure, all sweatpants are designed to be comfortable, but the cotton, modal, and spandex fabric Knix uses takes things up a notch. The smooth, cooling, and slightly stretchy fabric feels fantastic against skin and looks a bit more put-together than typical sweatpant material.
Most loungewear tends to follow the same cut, so we appreciate Monos, a luggage brand , shaking things up when delving into clothing. This set is as soft as any sweatpants out there, with a mid-length wide-leg pant and a short sleeve V-neck tee that's just slightly cropped.
Anything labeled Signaturesoft nails both the rest day and flying-comfortably mood we're going for. The top and bottom have a streamlined shape and the sweatpants are tapered at the ankle. Both pieces are made of a comfortable rayon, acrylic, and spandex mix, so you’ll feel cozy while still looking put together. The sweatshirt and sweatpants can be purchased individually and come in nearly a dozen colors should you want to mix and match, and the sweatshirt passes the video-conferencing-chic test, in that it looks more like a standard sweater than workout wear.
Not a hoodie person? You might like this cowl-neck top, which comes with cropped pants, both made of a super soft jersey and spandex fabric. Shop the set in gray, sky blue, strawberry, or buttercream, and wear it on your next overnight flight to feel like you're in pajamas.
If you didn't get on board with sweat shorts during the stay-at-home early pandemic days, it's not too late: Ideal for warmer climates or people who run hot, Reona's riff of its best-selling cotton joggers pairs well with the loose-fit crop T-shirt , a travel wardrobe staple made of bamboo fabric.
You may never want to put on pajamas again after wearing Softwear's Lounge Set. The fabric is buttery soft inside and out. Both the pullover and joggers are tailored and fitted with a clean silhouette—the top could pass for a normal sweater—while still being ultra soft. Plus, it’s long-lasting: The sustainable fabric is pilling-resistant and made to keep its shape after every wear.
Made for pregnant or nursing moms, this Everly Grey set is designed to fit a baby bump and make nursing easier with side openings on the top. Made of stretchy fabric with cuffed ankles and wrists and pockets on the hips, it's a loose, ever-so-slightly tailored look you'll wear again and again. Order it in one of four neutral colors: black, charcoal, oyster pink, or denim blue.

Travel system buying guide
What you need to know With a wheeled base plus car seat and bassinet or carrycot, a travel system is a great option when you’re on the move with your newborn. The flat-based carrycot means a travel system functions as a pram for your baby, which is the best way for them to lie until they’re at least six months old. Being able to clip on your baby’s car seat for short trips when out and about is a great option to prevent waking them up to move them. But it’s advised that a baby shouldn’t be left in their car seat for longer than 90 minutes at a time. And newborns, or babies that were premature, should ideally only be sat in one for up to 30 minutes in one go. If you're planning a long journey, factor in lots of breaks! If you’re unsure about how a travel system differs from a buggy or stroller, our pushchair article outlines the differences. Put simply, a travel system is one item that can adapt to meet all your baby's travel needs, from newborn to toddlerhood. Good Egg Safety CIC Opens a new window , the UK's leading child seat specialist said, 'The most important item we will ever buy for our children is their child seat. Some parents buy their travel system first, then find the child seat isn't a fit for their car. To avoid this, we always suggest choosing a car seat by a reputable manufacturer and then picking a travel system that is compatible with it. Buying the car seat and travel system separately offers more options.'

Passport costs set to rise by more than 7%
- Wednesday 20 March 2024 at 4:02pm
Passport fees are set to rise by more than 7% next month, the Home Office has announced.
The cost of applications made by those over 16 in the UK online will increase from £82.50 to £88.50 under the proposals.
Those for children under 16 will cost £57.50 which is a rise from the current £53.50.
Postal applications and those applying from overseas will also see price rises. If approved the new prices will come in from April 11.
The rise comes after fees rose by approximately 9% last year.
In statement, the Home Office said: "The new fees will help ensure that income from these applications better meets the cost of delivering passport and associated operations, reducing reliance on funding from general taxation. "The government does not make any profit from the cost of passport applications." It continued: "The fees contribute to the cost of processing passport applications, consular support overseas including for lost or stolen passports, and the cost of processing British citizens at UK borders. "The increase will also help enable the Government to continue improving its services."

Dragon’s Dogma 2 pawns and how they work
They babble as much as I would if I were hangin’ with my hero.
- Inclinations and how to change
- Vocations and specializations
- Hiring pawns and using Riftstones
Forgotten Riftstones and unique pawns
- Best pawn party composition
The pawn system is the beating heart of Dragon’s Dogma 2 and its predecessor. Although this is a sternly single-player fantasy adventure, you’re never really alone with these chatty, high-five-hungry NPCs by your side to aid in battle and help guide your path.
These immortal characters travel between realms and exist solely to serve the true Arisen (that’s you). They aren’t just mindless husks dragging their feet as they follow you through the underbrush; they can gather items, lead you to hidden treasures or quest locations, and even provide information to make your travels easier.
The pawn you create at the start of the game will stick with you to the end, so granting them the skills and personality you deem most valuable is key. Additionally, making them bulky will boost their carry weight, and that’s a blessing. Making them hot also helps since you have to look at them for 40+ hours, and since they'll be adventuring with other players, giving them a stupid name might earn you bonus points.
All in all, pawns keep you company, carry your junk, kick monster butt, give great high fives and elbow bumps, and serve as connections to the Dragon’s Dogma 2 community. Here's how they work.
Pawn inclinations and how to change them
Once you’ve designed your ultimate companion, you have to choose their inclination. This dictates the more intricate parts of their personality and behaviour.
There are four pawn inclinations:
- Kindhearted: These pawns prioritise support, buffing the team and holding off enemies.
- Calm: Strategic-minded pawns that prioritise defense and evasion.
- Simple: Pawns that love exploration, item gathering, and will open chests every chance they get.
- Straightforward: Perceptive pawns that excel at spotting enemies and rush into battle whether you like it or not.
The inclination you choose for your main pawn is entirely up to you and your playstyle, but adding pawns with different inclinations as you explore can provide some much-needed balance to your party. You’ll also hear the same voice lines over and over with pawns of the same type, so it's better to mix it up.
If you’d like to change your pawn’s inclination, the earliest time to do so is in Vernworth. Beside the Riftstone you’ll find a merchant called Neomith selling Rift Incense that lets you alter your pawn's inclination for 2,000 RC a pop.
Pawn vocations and specializations
Pawns can choose from the same starting vocations as players: Fighter, Mage, Thief, or Archer. By progressing to Vernworth and completing the Vocation Frustration quest, you'll also unlock two advanced vocations that they can pick from: Warrior and Sorcerer. Unfortunately, advanced vocations such as Magick Archer, Mystic Sprearhand, Trickster, and Warfarer, are only available to your Arisen.
Specializations are skills only pawns can acquire that help give them an increased level of independence. For example, the Chirurgeon specialization allows a pawn to use curatives on you and the other pawns in your party. Through doing certain quests in the game, such as helping Flora craft fruit roborant in Melve then finding her in Vernworth market, you can get tomes that will let you apply a specific specialization to one of your pawns.
How to hire pawns and use Riftstones
While exploring you’ll stumble on Riftstones in both cities and out in the world. Touching these monuments transports you to the place where pawns dwell, allowing you to summon new pawns to accompany you on your journey—basically a pawn job board. It's worth noting that each Riftstone specialises in a particular type of pawn in terms of inclination and physical build, and you can see this list by viewing Linked Riftstones at the big stone in Vernworth.
You can hire two pawns at a time. This is free if they’re the same level as your Arisen or below, but it'll cost you RC—or Rift Crystals —if they're above your current level. This rare currency can be earned by resting at inns, completing quests, or defeating certain monsters like the wight. Your main pawn will also earn Rift Crystals while in the employ of other players.
When interacting with a Riftstone, you’re also able to set a pawn quest . This is a task given to your main pawn while he’s hanging out with another player. You can decide on what the task is—like killing a specific monster, for example—and set a reward for the Arisen who completes it. This is a great way to earn valuable rewards passively.
It’s important to remember that other players' pawns in your party will not level up . Once you outlevel your guest pawns, it’s best to find a Riftstone and swap them for stronger ones. When you surrender a pawn, you can also give them a farewell gift from your inventory to take back to their master. Try to be nice and not slip me a dirty doo-doo handkerchief after my pawn saved your butt from a hulked-out cyclops.
You’ll sometimes stumble on Forgotten Riftstones while out in the wilds. When interacting with these ruined artifacts, one of two things will happen: either the Riftstone will be restored and useable again, or a ridiculously high-level pawn will be summoned, causing the Riftstone to disappear for good. You’ll be able to hire this pawn for free regardless of their level and the high quality of their gear.
So what's the best pawn party composition?
While you could technically create a party of all Fighters for Hulk Hogan levels of smackdown, you’ll quickly find that balance is key. Actually, no, not balance exactly— you just really need a Mage in your party at all times , no matter what.
Not only can these spellcasters heal you, but they can imbue your weapons with an element. This is crucial. Many enemies in Dragon’s Dogma 2, such as slimes and phantoms, can only be wounded when you're wielding elemental damage. There’s no reason to leave the magic user at home when the world is so full of things they could hurt. Not to mention, the Mage Meister's Teaching is the Celestial Paean spell, which grants partywise damage reduction and infinite stamina.
Besides your compulsory Mage, having a Fighter or Warrior is also important for keeping enemies occupied in melee , especially if you're playing a spellcaster. But besides that, party composition is all down to you.

Major UK airport set to ditch 100ml liquid rule in time for summer holidays
- Hope Brotherton , Travel Reporter
- Published : 12:53, 22 Mar 2024
- Updated : 11:08, 23 Mar 2024
A MAJOR UK airport is set to ditch the 100ml liquid rule later this year.
Waiting to have luggage scanned , or queueing up to pass through metal detectors, is one of the easiest ways to get held up while passing through an airport.
But new technology is being introduced at airports across the country that's set to make the 100ml liquid rule a thing of the past.
The new CT scanners not only remove the need for people to take liquids out of their hand luggage, it also increases the liquid limit from 100ml to two litres.

Additionally, laptops and electronic items won't need to be removed from hand luggage either, speeding up the whole security process.

In 2022, the Department of Transport implemented a deadline of June 2024 for airports to have the new scanners in place.
Last year, Teesside Airport became the first airport in the UK to ditch the 100ml liquid rule.
Earlier today, Birmingham International Airport announced that it will also meet the June deadline, with plans to introduce the new scanners by June 1, 2024.
Passengers travelling through Birmingham International Airport will be able to keep everything in their bags instead of being asked to remove laptops and ditch liquids over 100ml at screenings.

Luggage will then pass through the CT scanners which allows airport security to inspect bags from a 3D image, which will be a vast improvement from the 2D images currently used.
Nick Barton, boss of Birmingham Airport, told the Metro : "Birmingham Airport has invested £60 million in a new security hall and scanning equipment.
"From June 1, our customers will see the benefits of the new security systems as we roll them out, which will result in a quicker and easier pre-flight security screening process for our customers.
"In the meantime, up until the 1st June date, our existing security restrictions remain in place."
Leeds Bradford, Liverpool and Bristol are also expected to hit the deadline, while East Midlands could also finish their instalment of the new scanners in time.
Edinburgh airport looks set to fall short, with work to change the scanners there expected to be complete by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, London Heathrow has partially introduced some of the new machines, but isn't expected to finish until some time next year.
Manchester and London Gatwick are also set to miss the deadline.

Airport Liquid Rule
Originally introduced in 2006, the rules restrict holidaymakers to carrying just 100ml of liquids in their carry-on luggage, which must be stored in a sealed, clear bag.
Mike Harvey, Managing Director, 1st Move International, advised people to make sure to know which rules they need to follow while travelling, with not every airport ready to meet the deadline.
He said: "When planning your travels, it's crucial to be aware that the 100ml liquid restriction might still be in place depending on the specific airport you depart from.
"Ensure that you check all departing airports on your itinerary, including domestic layovers .
"Until a universal removal of the 100ml liquid restriction is implemented across all airports , it’s best to adhere to the established protocols.
"Continue to pack liquids, gels, and aerosols in containers of 100ml or smaller and arrange them in a clear, resealable plastic bag, to mitigate the risk of disposal."
Taking too many liquids is one big mistake that people make at airports, but there are plenty of others.
Belts and shoes
Wearing complicated clothes, including belts and shoes , always slows people down.
They dress forgetting that those items need to be removed and scanned, which not only holds them up, but everyone else behind them.
People are advised to dress with airport security in mind to speed things up.
Using airport screens
Relying on screens for information in the airport is not advised, according to flight attendants.
It turns out that the screens are updated later than other places and checking online is a much more reliable way to get details about your flight .
Buying transport tickets at airports
Onward travel from the airport can be expensive - but people often pay much more than they need to.
At UK airports, buying tickets for train travel from the machines at the stations is often much more expensive than buying them online .
It's always worth checking the prices online when you arrive before buying the tickets.

Rwanda trips by UK ministers and officials have already cost over £400,000
Figures reveal £413,541 spent on travel since the policy to send asylum seekers there was devised in 2022
- UK politics – latest updates
Sending ministers and officials to Rwanda has cost the government more than £400,000 before a single deportation flight has taken off, figures show.
Ministers have spent a total of £413,541 on travel in the two years since the policy to send asylum seekers to Kigali started to be developed.
The total, calculated by the Labour party, is based on government transparency releases. It includes trips by senior government officials and a succession of ministers and home secretaries including James Cleverly, Suella Braverman and Priti Patel.
This week it emerged that Cleverly spent £165,561 on chartering a private jet for a one-day trip to sign a new treaty with Rwanda in December. The cost of the flight was published in a transparency document on Thursday.
The shadow immigration minister, Stephen Kinnock, said: “Having clearly decided that committing £600m of taxpayers’ money to the Rwandan government for just 300 refugees wasn’t insulting enough, it now emerges that three home secretaries have blown hundreds of thousands of pounds on their various publicity stunts in Rwanda. This government’s enthusiasm for wasting taxpayers’ money knows no bounds.
“Labour would redirect the cash set aside for Rwanda into a cross-border police unit and security partnership to smash the criminal smuggler gangs at source, and introduce a new returns unit to quickly remove those with no right to be here.”
A succession of legal challenges have prevented the Rwanda policy, which would send asylum seekers who arrive in the UK on small boats to the east African country for processing, from being implemented.
The plan was first announced by Boris Johnson in April 2022 but is yet to become operational two years later.
The government insists that flights to Rwanda will take off this spring, after a bill intended to overcome legal hurdles to the policy becomes law.
However, ministers have delayed the passage of the bill until after Easter, with the final votes on it expected to take place in mid-April . The government has yet to find an airline to operate the flight.
Asked why he was waiting another three weeks to push the legislation through, Rishi Sunak said his plan to stop Channel crossings “is working”.
“People should not be able to jump the queue, come here illegally, put pressure on local services, undermine our sense of fairness and ultimately put their lives at risk as they are exploited by gangs,” he told broadcasters. “That’s why I am determined to stop the boats. Our plan is working, the numbers last year were down by a third. That’s never happened before, that shows that we are making progress.”
He added that the UK needed Rwanda flights as a “deterrent” to “finish the job”.
Cleverly’s flight to Rwanda in December was to sign a new treaty that established a new appeal body, to be made up of judges with asylum expertise from a range of countries, to hear individual cases.
The flights alone of the home secretary’s 24-hour trip cost more than four times the total cost of Braverman’s last visit in March 2023 . Her trip cost just over £40,000, with flights at £35,041, hotels £4,301, transport £248 and “engagement” £2,056, the Daily Mirror reported last year.
The government said Rwanda’s asylum system would be monitored by an independent committee, whose powers to enforce the treaty would be beefed up. The committee would develop a system to enable relocated people and their lawyers to lodge complaints.
The government was criticised earlier this month for planning to spend £1.8m on each of the first 300 asylum seekers it plans to send to Rwanda. The overall cost of the scheme stands at more than half a billion pounds, according to the figures released to the National Audit Office.

First Major UK Airport Set to Abandon 100ml Liquid Rule This Summer
T he tedious process of scrutinizing labels on shampoo bottles and debating whether hummus counts as a liquid could soon be a thing of the past for travelers passing through Birmingham City Airport.
From June 1, 2024, Birmingham Airport will become one of the first major British airports to abolish the restrictive 100ml rule for liquids in carry-on luggage, just in time for the summer holiday season.
This revolutionary change comes after the government mandated major airports to upgrade their screening equipment for carry-on bags to enhance security while expediting the screening process.
Birmingham Airport has invested significantly in advanced scanning technology, including X-ray scanners that generate 3D images of bag contents.
With sophisticated threat detection algorithms, security officers can efficiently identify suspicious items, eliminating the need for passengers to adhere to the stringent 100ml liquid limit.
Nick Barton, CEO of Birmingham Airport, highlighted the airport’s substantial investment in a new security hall and scanning equipment, emphasizing the benefits passengers will experience, such as quicker and easier security screenings.
However, until the new measures take effect on June 1, existing security restrictions, including the removal of electronic devices during screening and the limitation of liquids to 100ml in resealable bags, will remain in place.
Birmingham Airport’s decision marks a significant milestone. It makes it the largest airport in the UK to relax carry-on luggage restrictions.
While other airports, such as London City Airport and Teesside Airport, have already implemented similar changes, major hubs like Heathrow, Gatwick, and Luton are still in the process of installing the advanced scanning technology and are unlikely to meet the June deadline.
The rule limiting liquids in carry-on luggage was introduced in 2006 after authorities foiled a terror plot involving liquid explosives disguised as soft drinks.
However, advancements in screening technology have rendered these stringent restrictions unnecessary, prompting the government to streamline cabin bag rules and enhance security measures.
Although the plan to allow liquid containers of up to two liters by 2024 faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the government remains committed to improving the passenger experience while ensuring robust security protocols are in place.
Travelers are advised to check with their departure airport for guidance on liquid restrictions, as rules may vary depending on the airport’s screening capabilities.
