Emily Blunt Says Tom Cruise's Blunt, Vulgar Advice Got Her Through Filming Edge of Tomorrow

Tom Cruise told Emily Blunt to "stop being such a p***y" when she started crying on set, but it was exactly what she needed to hear.

Filming 2014's Edge of Tomorrow was physically taxing for Emily Blunt , who co-starred in the sci-fi action movie alongside Tom Cruise . Directed by Doug Liman, the film is set in a post-apocalyptic future where a soldier (Cruise) is caught in a time loop during an alien invasion, forced to repeatedly relive his death courtesy of the otherworldly invaders. Hoping to take what he learns from each loop, the human warrior and a comrade (Blunt) team up with the hope of vanquishing the invaders and saving the planet.

The plot of the film calls for its leads to wear heavy armor, and that meant suiting up Blunt and Cruise in bulky, metal suits. For a new interview on the Smartless podcast, Blunt recalled how unhappy she was with the wardrobe, remembering how uncomfortable and heavy her outfit felt. It was so unpleasant that Blunt says she even broke down in tears the very first time she tried on her suit, questioning her ability to do the film.

"We had to wear these really enormous robotic suits, which I think would have been great if they could have CGI'd them, but they wanted to do it practically and in a tactile way. And, you know, when you hear the word tactile, that sounds nice and cozy --- there was nothing cozy about wearing these suits. Mine was like 85 pounds, it was so heavy that the first time I put it on, I just started to cry."

Tom Cruise Offered Some Tough Love... And It Worked

For Blunt, the weight of the suit had her uncontrollably bawling. She felt that she wouldn't have been able to do this movie after all, unable to calm down due to the panic she felt at the moment. According to Blunt, Cruise was there to offer some comfort, but when she wouldn't stop crying, he chose to give her some blunt and vulgar advice. For Blunt, it was exactly what she needed to hear, as it made her laugh and led to the two getting through the production.

"I just started to cry, in front of Tom, and he didn't know what to do. And he just stared at me and was like, 'I know. I know. I know.' And I was like, 'Tommy, I'm not sure how I am going to get through this shoot.' And I started to cry, I was like, 'I'm just feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot!' He literally goes --- he stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, 'Come on. Stop being such a p*ssy, okay?' (Laughs.) And I did laugh, and we got through it."

Perhaps, sometimes, what works best is to just avoid the sugar-coating.

Actor Emily Blunt recently revealed the blunt, crude advice Tom Cruise gave her while working on the 2014 sci-fi film “Edge Of Tomorrow.”

During an appearance on the “SmartLess” podcast hosted by Will Arnett , Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes , Blunt shared the challenges of working on her first action-oriented flick.

The actor said that Cruise told her “rather un-reassuringly” when they started the film that it was “ the deep end of action for” him. The “Mary Poppins Returns” star said her reaction was, “If you are saying that, like, we are in trouble.”

One stunt was particularly daunting because it required Blunt and Cruise to wear what she described as “ really enormous robotic suits” to do the scene “in a tactile way” rather than with CGI.

“And you know, when you hear the word tactile, you’re like, that sounds nice and cozy,” Blunt continued. “There was nothing cozy about wearing these suits. Like, mine was like 85 pounds. It was so heavy.”

Blunt said the first time she put on the suit she started to cry in front of her co-star. She confessed she wasn’t sure if she would be able to get through the shoot and admitted to feeling “a bit panicky.”

Blunt said Cruise stared at her for a while, trying to figure out the right thing to say. His ultimate choice of words?

“Come on, stop being such a pussy. OK?” Blunt relayed, which led Hayes to gasp and Bateman to joke, “Nice, good for Tom.”

“And I did laugh and then we got through it,” Blunt said.

A sequel to “Edge Of Tomorrow” has been discussed since at least 2019, and Blunt told EW in 2021 that she read a script “that was in really great shape.” However, she told Howard Stern at the time that she thought “the movie is probably too expensive.”

Emily Blunt says that Tom Cruise advice is ‘still something we laugh about’

tom cruise advice to emily blunt

By Marianne Garvey, CNN

Emily Blunt is clearing up any misunderstanding about that advice she received from Tom Cruise.

Blunt had told the SmartLess podcast that when she was filming 2014’s “Edge of Tomorrow,” she was having a tough time with her heavy costume when Cruise told her “‘Come on, stop being such a p***y, OK?’ “

“And I did laugh, and then we got through it,” Blunt said.

On Monday, she explained that the entire story was “taken literally and absurdly out of context” by the media.

“I absolutely adore Tom, he’s a dear friend and he was a total gem to me. It was said as a joke to make me laugh, which it did in a big way,” Blunt told People .

Blunt said the whole story stemmed from the weight of trying to perform while she was wearing an 85-pound costume on the set for the project.

She continued: “It’s ludicrous that it’s being spun as something that offended me. It didn’t. I shared the story as lightheartedly as it was meant by Tom. And it’s still something we laugh about to this day.”

Mission accomplished.

Emily Blunt claims Tom Cruise gave her some unconventional — yet motivating — advice when they worked together on “Edge of Tomorrow.”

The actress, now 39, recalled her Hollywood co-star delivering some tough love on the set of the 2014 action flick, a departure from her typical rom-com fare. She said Cruise told her to “stop being such a p—y” as she struggled with her 85-pound costume.

“We had to wear these enormous suits, which I think would’ve been great if we had CGI’d them, but we wanted to do it in a tactile way,” she revealed on the “SmartLess” podcast on an episode dropping Monday, per news reports .

“When you hear the word ‘tactile,’ you think that sounds nice and cozy. There was nothing cozy about these suits. It was like 85 pounds. It was so heavy,” she continued. “The first time I put it on I started to cry, and [Cruise] didn’t know what to do.”

Emily Blunt revealed the tough love she said she received from Tom Cruise on a film set.

Blunt said Cruise “stared at her” as she got more panicked about donning the heavy suit.

“I was like, ‘Tom, I’m not sure how I’m going to get through this shoot,’ and just started to cry,” she admitted. “I said, ‘I’m feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot.'”

Cruise’s alleged response had “The Devil Wears Prada” star weeping again — but in a good way.

“He just stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, ‘Come on, stop being such a p—y, OK?'” she said, adding it caught her off guard and made her laugh.

The Post reached out to a rep for Cruise, 60, for comment.

Cruise and Blunt appeared together in the 2014 action film.

In “Edge of Tomorrow,” Cruise and Blunt play warriors in a time loop attempting to save humanity after Earth falls under attack from aliens.

The massive suit wasn’t the only challenge Blunt allegedly encountered on the science-fiction film set, revealing she also injured her ribs and collarbone. She reportedly told podcast hosts Jason Bateman , Sean Hayes and Will Arnett the affected bones “are still dodgy.”

The two played soldiers fighting a war against aliens in the film that also starred Bill Paxton and Brendan Gleeson, which required the wear of enormous robotic suits. The costume "would've been great if we had CGI'd them, but we wanted to do it practically and in a tactile way," Blunt said. "When you hear the word 'tactile,' you think that sounds nice and cozy. There was nothing cozy about wearing these suits."

Blunt's suit weighed about 85 pounds. "It was so heavy," she said. "The first time I put it on I just started to cry in front of Tom and he didn't know what to do. He just stared at me. I was like, 'Tom, I'm not sure how I'm going to get through this shoot,' and just started to cry. I said, 'I'm just feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot.' He just stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, 'Come on, stop being such a p---y, okay?'"

Blunt laughed off the comment and the two were able to get through the shoot, she said, but "the training was intense." The actress said she injured herself during a stunt. "I did this aerial stunt on wires and I was supposed to land on my shoulder, and I landed on my face," she recalled.

A sequel to the film was announced in 2019 with Blunt and Cruise reported to reprise their roles, but Blunt told EW last year that she wasn't quite sure where it stood — but said she did read a script for it at some point. "That was an amazing script, but I just don't know what the future holds for it," she said. "I did read a script that was in really great shape, but it's just a matter of if that can even happen now. I don't have the straight answer on that one."

Emily Blunt said she cried on the sets of Edge of Tomorrow.

It all unfolded on the sets of Edge of Tomorrow in 2014 when Emily Blunt grew tense while donning enormous robotic suits.

Actress Emily Blunt once relied on the tough advice of co-star Tom Cruise to get through a difficult situation while filming a movie together. It all unfolded on the sets of Edge of Tomorrow in 2014 when the Oppenheimer star grew tense while donning her enormous robotic suits. The confession was made during her appearance on the SmartLess podcast last year. She admitted Tom Cruise told her to “stop being a p**” while filming the sequence of their Doug Liman-directed action film. According to Emily, it would have been better if the production had used CGI instead of expecting the actress to wear enormous suits.

“We wanted to do it in a tactile way but there was nothing cosy about these suits,” she said. It was the first time when she put them on and Emily instantly began to cry in front of Tom. As per the accounts shared by her, initially, the Mission Impossible star had no clue how to pacify her but he ended up giving her some tough advice that proved to be boonful. It didn’t take long for Tom to use his straightforward approach to tackle the situation.

Emily explained, “I was like, ‘Tom, I’m not sure how I’m going to get through this shoot,’ and just started to cry. “I was like, ‘I’m feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot,’ and he literally goes — he just stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, ‘Come on, stop being such a p**, OK?'” The remark that took Emily by surprise not only made her laugh but also helped the duo to get through the hectic schedule.

On the work front, Emily Blunt last shared the screen space with Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, and Matt Damon in Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated biographical film Oppenheimer. After her stint in the movie about the deadliest weapon known to humanity, the actress has multiple projects in her kitty including Pain Hustlers opposite Chris Evans, The Fall Guy starring Ryan Gosling, and IF with Ryan Reynolds.

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise earlier grabbed massive headlines for his feature in the seventh instalment of the MI film franchise, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. The second part of the film is scheduled for release next year. In addition, talks of the star attempting his first space stunt in a future project have also left fans excited.

Emily Blunt Speaks On People Overreacting To Advice Given To Her By Tom Cruise

by Favour Adegoke Posted on December 15, 2022 at 8:00 pm PST

Actress Emily Blunt has clarified her statement concerning a piece of advice given to her by Tom Cruise on the set of “Edge of Tomorrow,” saying that people are taking it out of context.

The stars acted alongside each other in the sci-fi movie in 2014, with Blunt playing Rita Vrataski and Cruise as Major William Cage. Other actors in the film include Brendan Gleeson, Bill Paxton, Charlotte Riley, and others.

Although there was speculation concerning a possible sequel for the famous movie, Blunt previously revealed that it was unlikely. Among her most incoming projects, the actress will star in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” She will also be in “Pain Hustlers” with David Yates as the Netflix film’s director.

Emily Blunt Says Tom Cruise Wanted To Make Her Laugh

Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise

Blunt spoke to  E! News  to clarify a story she mentioned about her time on the set of “Edge of Tomorrow” with Cruise. She said the actor had told her to “stop being a p***y” when she started crying on set because she felt uncomfortable in her costume.

In her statement , Blunt revealed that the story was taken out of context and something she thought was really funny was made to seem like it offended her. “It’s ludicrous that it’s being spun as something that offended me. It didn’t. I shared the story as lightheartedly as it was meant by Tom.”

“The Quiet Place” actress referred to Cruise as her close friend and someone she adored. Blunt also revealed that while working together, the Mission Impossible” star was “a total gem to me.” His calling her a “p****” was apparently in a bid to make her laugh, and she did. According to the actress, the memory was something they laughed about till this day.

She Cried On Set Of ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’

Emily Blunt

In a December 12 episode of the “ SmartLess ” podcast, Blunt looked back on her time filming “Edge of Tomorrow” and her struggles on set. Before starring in the film, the actress was primarily involved with rom-com genres, and as a result, the entire process was really new to her.

She recalled wearing “enormous suits” which weighed so heavily on her she began to cry. Blunt revealed that she had trained extensively before filming and was involved in gymnastics, sprints, Israeli martial arts, and, most importantly, weights. This all did little for her because, according to the actress, she could barely move with the suits on.

“We had to wear these enormous suits, which I think would’ve been great if we had CGI’d them, but we wanted to do it in a tactile way,” Blunt said to the podcast hosts, Sean Hayes, Jason Bateman, and Will Arnett.

She continued, “When you hear the word ‘tactile,’ you think that sounds nice and cozy. There was nothing cozy about these suits. It was like 85 pounds. It was so heavy,” she added. “The first time I put it on, I started to cry, and [Cruise] didn’t know what to do.”

In the middle of her breakdown, Blunt revealed that she told Cruise, her co-star at the time, that she wasn’t sure she could go through with the shoot. “I said, ‘I’m feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot,'” the actress recalled.

The “Mission Impossible” star reportedly was at a loss for words at Blunt’s tears but ended up giving her a response that shocked her out of her emotions. Blunt said, “I was like: Tom, I’m not sure how I’m going to get through this shoot,’ and I started to cry. ‘I’m just feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot.'”

“He literally stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, ‘Come on, stop being such a p***y, OK?'” Blunt revealed that she was amused enough by his comment that she laughed, and they eventually worked through it.

Emily Blunt Sustained Injuries On ‘Edge Of Tomorrow’

During the “ SmartLess ” podcast, Blunt revealed that while doing some stunts on wires, something went wrong, resulting in some lasting injuries. The actress hurt her collarbone and ribs, and they still persist to this day. She also dislocated her thumb and almost broke her nose, but a medic on set popped two fingers in to move the cartilage back.

In 2021, Blunt clarified rumors about a possible “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel, revealing that the movie was too expensive and nobody knew what would happen. However, she admitted that she had read a great script for the project if it were to move forward.

While talking to Howard Stern last year, Blunt said per CinemaBlend , “Honestly, I think the movie’s too expensive. Yeah, I don’t know how we’re going to do it. I think that it’s hard to align everyone’s schedules.” She added that while everyone, including the director, would love a sequel, they needed to “figure out what’s going on with the industry.”

Emily Blunt Says Tom Cruise Was 'Such a Doll to Me' on Edge of Tomorrow Set: 'I Loved Him'

Emily Blunt said 2014's science-fiction action movie 'Edge of Tomorrow' was "the hardest thing physically I will ever do in my life"

Abby Stern is a writer-reporter at PEOPLE. She’s been writing about entertainment, fashion, beauty, and other lifestyle content for over fifteen years.

Emily Blunt is singing Tom Cruise 's praises.

On Thursday, Blunt, 40, appeared at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles for a moderated conversation with filmmaker Rob Marshall, whom Blunt has worked with on 2014's Into the Woods and 2018's Mary Poppins Returns .

At one point during the wide-ranging conversation, Marshall turned Blunt's attention to her time working with Cruise, 61, on  Edge of Tomorrow. The two costarred in the 2014 science-fiction action movie as a pair of soldiers involved in a war between humanity and an alien race in the near future who discover that Cruise's character has gained the ability to relive moments in time.

As Blunt spoke about getting in shape for the physically intense role, she noted that action movie icon Cruise helps "tighten the screws on everyone when it comes to what you think you're capable of."

"And because he can do everything and wants to do everything, it makes you want to meet him where he is at," she shared, adding, "He's so inspiring. Such a doll to me."

"He is so gracious. So cute. Oh, so cute. I loved him. Yeah. He was amazing," Blunt continued. She also complimented Cruise for ensuring she was involved with much of the film's production.

"We were sort of writing the third act as we went," she said. "And again, sometimes the best movies, they're born out of that chaos. And I think I thought it was going to be sort of boys club and [Cruise] brought me into every script meeting, every single decision."

Blunt has said in recent months that she is interested in revisiting the project for a sequel.

“There was [a sequel script] that [filmmaker Doug Liman] kind of slithered over to me,” she said on an August episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “I mean, I would love to make it a reality but I just don’t know when or how. And how many Mission: Impossibles does [Cruise] need?

"Wasn't he brilliant as the cowardly hero? Oh, incredible. I couldn't bare it, I adored him," she added of Cruise at the time. "He was the best. I'm so ready [for a sequel.] I'm not the impediment, I promise."

While there are no known plans to make an Edge of Tomorrow sequel, Cruise and filmmaker Liman intend to film a movie together that would see Cruise shoot scenes at the International Space Station in outer space . Cruise shared a brief update on the film in July, telling Variety that he and Liman have " been working on it diligently ."

“We’ll see where we go," he said at the time.

Tom Cruise told Emily Blunt to 'stop being such a p***y' about 'Edge of Tomorrow' battle-suits

Even the The Angel of Verdun has a hard go of it sometimes.

Emily Blunt (L) and Tom Cruise

It's no secret that Tom Cruise 's endurance threshold is much higher than that of the average actor in Hollywood. The dude punishes his body on a regular basis — hanging off airplanes, holding his breath underwater for stupid amounts of time, and experiencing several G forces — for our amusement at the movie theater. Perhaps he's forgotten that the rest of us aren't in perfect shape, because when Emily Blunt complained about the weight of the battle-suits in Edge of Tomorrow , Cruise basically told her to suck it up and quit whining.

"It was my first foray into action and as Tom said — rather unreassuringly when we started — 'This is the deep end of action for me ,'" she recalled during a guest appearance on a recent episode of the SmartLess podcast hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. "And I was like, 'If you're saying that, we are in trouble.' We had to wear these really enormous, robotic suits, which I think would've been great if they could have CGI'd them, but we wanted to do it practically and in a tactile way. When you hear the word 'tactile,' you're like, 'That sounds nice and cozy.' There was nothing cozy about wearing these suits. Mine was like 85 pounds. It was so heavy, that the first time I put it on, I just started to cry in front of Tom and he didn't know what to do. He just stared at me and was like, 'I know...I know...I know...' And I was like, 'Tom, I'm not sure how I'm going to get through this shoot,' and I started to cry. I was like, 'I'm just feeling a bit panic-y about the whole shoot.' He stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, 'Come on, stop being such a p***y, OK?' I did laugh and we got through it."

RELATED: Edge of Tomorrow looking to Live, Die, Repeat with new sequel in development

Based on All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, Edge of Tomorrow hit the big screen on June 6, 2014. Hailed as a thrilling take on the Groundhog Day formula with a delectable sci-fi twist, the film, directed by Doug Liman, garnered $370 million at the global box office against a budget of $178 million. A sequel has been in development since April of 2016 , with Liman expected to return as director. While a script was ready to roll in late 2019 , the COVID health crisis threw a wrench into the gears — both financially and schedule-wise.

"Honestly, I think the movie's too expensive," Blunt told Howard Stern last year . "I don't know how we're gonna do it. I think that it's hard to align everyone's schedules. I would love it, Doug Liman would love it, Tom would love it. We'd all love to do it, but I think until we figure out what's going on with the industry...we need to figure out what is the next roadmap for the kinds of films that people want to make?"

"It's one of these things where if Tom, Emily and I were to say, 'We're ready to pull the trigger on this script,' it's Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, the film gets made," Liman remarked to Collider  several months prior. "That's pretty much how Hollywood works. The stars are the gatekeepers. If you can get Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt to commit to the movie, it's going to happen."

Earlier this year, ScreenRant reported that Warner Bros. had entered development for a TV project based on the fan favorite property.

Emily Blunt interview: 'Tom Cruise is the reason I bounced back after pregnancy'

The sicario actress moved from britain to the west coast and taken us citizenship - it was all fine until she became horrified by the ‘lack of culture’, article bookmarked.

“I was the most fearful child; I was scared of everything. I was scared of bees, I was scared of freshly cut grass on my feet, I was scared of balloons and I was scared of Father Christmas,” admits Emily Blunt, who also had a childhood stutter. “I was talking to my mother about it the other day, and now here I am jumping off buildings and doing crazy stunts and this movie Sicario – it’s pretty out-there and intense.

“So it’s a bit of an irony that I was this quaking child that now has become someone with a willingness to do anything.” And now she is an actress breaking the rules, and forging new ground, and this time it’s audiences that are being asked to become fearless.

Ostensibly Sicario deals with the ugliness of the drug trade across the Mexican and American border, and it’s the decision to cast 32-year-old Blunt in the lead that is the most radical component of the film.

In a film full of men, her partner is rising British star Daniel Kaluuya, her bosses are men, and so are the mysterious law enforcement agents that she is asked to help, played by Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro. She sticks out, not just because of her gender, but because of the quiet determination she gives her character. She looks for inner strength rather than brawn to play an FBI agent, a decision that came about after she began contacting law-enforcement agents by Skype to prepare for the role.

“I spoke to three or four female FBI agents, that was the most informative part of the research, more so than reading books and watching other movies,” she says.

“I asked them, ‘how does it affect your sleep, your marriage, your children, what music do you listen to, what frightens you, what do you do to relax?’ They were so open and had such normality to them; they were kind of tough girls but they were very real and very human people. So I wanted to make sure my character Kate Macer was someone who reflected them. She is not someone who acts on her femininity and, because she carries a gun, it does not mean she has to be butch. There is a frankness to these women, there was a real loneliness, and they were quite shy.”

Timidity is not an attribute that we have grown to expect from FBI agents in cinema. Blunt’s investigation led to the discovery of rituals such as one agent who would always sleep on her sofa the night before a raid.

The rituals and preparation fascinated her, yet when asked about her own preparation to movies, she sighs: “The process, it’s so boring isn’t it?” And she doesn’t have any rituals either, “What I do changes from movie to movie.”

Playing an FBI agent was a role to challenge the notion that Blunt is simply a posh English rose, like the girl Tamsin she portrayed in her breakout movie My Summer of Love in 2004. Her character rides horses and has been suspended from boarding school. It’s about the relationship between her and a working class lass played by Natalie Press and is one of the great British coming-of-age movies.

Blunt has a middle-class background, her father is a barrister and her mother a teacher and former actress. Her uncle is Conservative MP Crispin Blunt – although it was playing the troubled child of a New Labour spin-doctor in Stephen Poliakoff’s Gideon’s Daughter that saw her win a Golden Globe in 2007 as Best Supporting Actress in a Series or TV Film.

That same year she was also nominated for a Golden Globe, in the Best Supporting Actress for Feature Films category for her turn as Meryl Streep’s haughty and snide first assistant in The Devil Wears Prada, which also played up the British-superiority stereotype. The idea that she was British royalty was reinforced as she played Queen Victoria in Young Victoria, for which she was nominated for a best actress Golden Globe.

However there has been a career in evolution since Blunt moved to Los Angeles and married actor John Krasinski in July 2010, and they had a daughter, Hazel, in February 2014. She played in a series of romantic dramas, My Sister’s Sister, The Five-Year Engagement and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, before there was a move to more action-orientated affairs with Looper and then in 2014 opposite Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow.

Despite this recent shift, when Sicario debuted in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, the general consensus soon seemed to be that enjoyment of the movie depended on whether you bought Blunt as an FBI agent: an odd reaction that highlighted the conditioning that audiences have had to cinema roles, rather than any deficiencies in Blunt’s performance, which is nuanced and beguiling. It’s when she’s off-screen that the film struggles against cliche.

The film also became the focus of the issue of women in cinema, as it was at the press conference for the film around which the furore over the stipulation that women had to wear high heels on the Cannes red carpet became an issue, with the men of the film claiming they would wear high heels to their own premiere, which they didn’t.

Blunt says that she loves wearing high heels to red carpets because it’s part of the theatre of the event; otherwise she’s always in flats chasing her toddler around. Yet she also feels that the time for talking is over. “I personally feel the media exacerbate the problem, the more we talk, the more they put a stamp on the issue. We need to create more programmes for female film-makers, that’s what we need to do, we should stop having so many ceremonies about women in film and need to start creating programs.”

She has her list of female directors she wants to work with, including Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow and the Australian director of The Babadook Jennifer Kent.

More recently it’s the idea of Blunt as an English rose that has created problems. There was something of a furore made over the fact that Blunt took American citizenship in August, a practical move for someone with an American family and who lives in America. The problem seems to be that she hasn’t hidden the fact that the decision was made out of financial necessity and that, despite the colour of her passport, she still feels British. When she quipped that watching the Republicans debate their presidential nomination she wondered what she had done by taking on citizenship, the public backlash saw her feel the need to apologise days later.

Her attempt at being American drew some comic frustration out of her British co-star Kaluuya on set. “When I’m doing an American accent in a film, I try to stay with it during the whole day and not go back and forth the whole day. On the first day I got there, Daniel was like: ‘For fuck’s sake, are you going to stay in that accent the whole time? I feel like I have to do it.’ After day three he was like: ‘I don’t want to do it anymore’. I was like: ‘Just because I’m doing it, you don’t have to do it.’”

The talk of citizenship did seem like a storm in a teacup. She avoided a potential backlash from Brits as she insisted that, despite the location of the highly anticipated forthcoming adaptation of Paula Hawkins’s psychological thriller The Girl on the Train being moved to New York, she will play Rachel, the alcoholic divorcee who fantasises about a couple she sees from the train, as British. It was part of the deal she made with director Tate Taylor. The tussle between nationalities seems to come up a lot.

“I have a lot of Brit friends in Los Angeles. It’s complicated because I have a love-hate relationship with Los Angeles, and I loathe that one industry emanates from every corner of it. Driving down the street and there are billboards about opening weekends and movies, movies, movies. I don’t like the lack of culture; I know there are some diehard LA people that argue with me about this but I grew up in London so it’s hard for me to accept that a couple of art galleries means you have culture.”

My older sister told me to steal some seeds from the garden centre once and I was caught

She copes by going away a lot. She often shoots in the United Kingdom and her family also have a home in Ojai, California, an hour and half from Los Angeles, where they spend a lot of time. It also has a lot of New Age residents, which makes her think of home. “I’m a bit of a hippie. My mum raised us all on homeopathic remedies and I went home recently and stayed the night and she put these essential-oil sticks everywhere, I love her so much, she is so sweet and these sticks will really make you sleep.”

Not that she generally needs help sleeping: “I’m a great sleeper, I have no problem sleeping.” Although she liked to stay in character and do the accent on set, she usually has no problem detaching her private life from her role. She’s not “method”. But, in Sicario, she does admit, “I was affected in a negative way and couldn’t sleep for a couple of days. It’s the fight scene where I bring a guy back to my apartment. It felt so real that I felt anxious, ‘oh this is what it would be like to be overpowered by a guy’. It was quite intense.”

The boundary between movie and reality blurred far more successfully when she introduced her literary-agent older sister Felicity to her The Devil Wears Prada co-star Stanley Tucci, and they married.

When she mentions Felicity, it’s as a conniving older sister. “My older sister, when we were growing up, would always tell me to do bad things that would get me in trouble. She told me to steal some seeds from the garden centre once and I was caught and had to take them back and apologise.” She then quips: “So illegal.”

Blunt didn’t have much of a career pause when she had her own daughter in last February and says she knows the secret. “I always say Tom Cruise is the reason I bounced back after the pregnancy,” she says. “He should be credited as the new diet pill because he asked me to do Edge of Tomorrow so I was in such good shape when I got pregnant, so after I had Hazel it was easier to bounce back.”

In addition to The Girl on the Train, on the horizon is her first out-and-out villain role. She stars in the sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman called The Huntsman, which will also feature Jessica Chastain and Charlize Theron. “It’s my first real villain role,” she gleefully states, “and it’s surprising how easy it was for evil to come to me.” Now it’s her who wants to make children scared.

Emily Blunt Turned Her ‘Oppenheimer’ Deposition Scene Into a Master Class. In This 2014 Non-Blockbuster, She Proved She Can Do It All

By Esther Zuckerman

Image may contain Emily Blunt Person Accessories Belt Clothing Pants Worker Glove Head and Face

I'll admit I wasn't fully sold on the greatness of Emily Blunt in Oppenheimer until her testimony, which comes close to the end of the three hour movie. This is not entirely her fault. As Kitty Oppenheimer, wife of J. Robert, her story invariably gets short shrift, as so many stories of wives have throughout history. With all that Oppenheimer is doing as it plumbs its title character's scientific, political and emotional life, it sometimes feels like we check in with Kitty too infrequently as she descends into alcoholism and resentment of motherhood.

But then in the last thirty minutes, you get to that deposition scene, and Blunt turns the tables. It's like a mic drop in the form of a series of small glances. Kitty, now a little wrinkled and hardened, faces off against Jason Clarke 's Roger Robb in the claustrophobic room where her husband has been interrogated. Robb’s main desire is to make her admit that she and Oppie were Communists. But Kitty refuses to let herself be caught in Robb's trap. At first she seems as if she may be crumbling under his line of questioning, and then she catches him on his syntax, effectively shutting him down. "Because I don't like your phrase," becomes an ice cold mantra, which she delivers with a little smirk. Blunt plays this not as the scorned wife supporting her one great love, but as a woman who has been through hell and back and knows where she stands. She tackles it with a mixture of wit and wisdom that makes you want to stand up and clap.

There are any number of Emily Blunt performances that have made me want to do the same over the years. Of course, I was first introduced to her as Emily, the snappy assistant in The Devil Wears Prada, where she rolled her black-linered eyes and delivered insults with a deadpan that could cut glass. But there's maybe no Blunt turn more deserving of cheers than her standout, guns-forward effort in the underrated 2014 Tom Cruise action vehicle Edge of Tomorrow . (To be clear: When I say "guns-forward" I mean her arms, which are insane in this.)

Genre films never get the respect they deserve from the Academy, but Doug Liman's Edge of Tomorrow didn't really get the respect it deserved from the general public, either. (In fact, it was so unappreciated that it was renamed Live Die Repeat for its home release.) Blunt plays Sergeant Rita Vrataski, known as the "Angel of Verdun" for the heroism she’s displayed in a war against an alien race called "the Mimics." When Cruise's military PR guy William Cage gets caught in a time loop after dying in battle, he eventually makes his way to Rita, who’s been through the same ordeal. She starts to train him as they try to figure out their way to beat their extraterrestrial enemy. Blunt is a marvel to watch in the role, a showcase for both her physical and mental muscle—turns out she’s as good with literal weapons as she is with a steely glare.

As we begin our final approach to the 2024 Oscars, we're taking one more look back at the films and performances that blew our minds last year—and looking even further back, to spotlight earlier Oscar-worthy work from the filmographies of this year's nominees.

In the film that put her on Martin Scorsese’s radar, she joined a cast stacked with heavy hitters and did more than hold her own. Sound familiar?

The 10 Best Emily Blunt Movies, Ranked

Who doesn't love Emily Blunt?

Since her feature film debut in 2004, Emily Blunt has been captivating audiences with her performances. Throughout her 20-year career, Blunt has appeared in multiple movies, playing lead and supporting roles alike, and earning praise for her work on screen, including winning a Golden Globe, two SAG Awards, and, most recently, earning her first Oscar nomination.

Blunt's resumé is versatile and ever-changing, juggling big-budget adventures with family-friendly romps, searing dramas, and star vehicles. Widely considered one of her generation's finest actresses, Blunt has appeared in many celebrated movies, always bringing something to the table with her work. These are Emily Blunt's best movies, capturing her essence as a performer and proving that she can elevate any kind of material to new heights .

10 'My Summer of Love' (2004)

Director: pawel pawlikowski.

Blunt made her debut in Pawel Pwlikowski 's romantic drama My Summer of Love . Based on the eponymous 2001 novel, the plot chronicles the friendship-turned-romance between working-class Mona and upper-class Tamsin, whose bond grows over an unforgettable summer.

Watching My Summer of Love , it's hardly noticeable that this is Blunt's first film . She's such a natural on the screen, effortlessly stepping into Tamsin's shoes and sharing tender, electrifying chemistry with co-star Natalie Press . Tamsin is a mercurial character, walking a gentle line between charm and cunning, shifting between the light and the dark. It's an impressive debut, with Blunt embodying all the sharp edges in the character while keeping her engaging and even relatable.

9 'The Adjustment Bureau' (2011)

Director: george nolfi.

Oscar-winner Matt Damon and Blunt first worked together over a decade ago in the 2011 sci-fi thriller The Adjustment Bureau . Loosely based on a Philip K. Dick short story, the plot follows the romance between a budding politician and a young dancer. However, mysterious forces beyond their understanding work to keep them apart.

Featuring equal parts action, thrills, and a healthy dose of sci-fi twists and themes, The Adjustment Bureau is an ambitious and satisfying thriller that greatly benefits from its leading duo's chemistry . Damon and Blunt are great together, easily selling the characters' budding romance despite a screenplay that asks too much of its audience without giving them enough to work with. The Adjustment Bureau 's plot often threatens to cave in, but Damon and Blunt are capable enough to keep it from crashing; instead, they actually make it soar on the strength of their connection.

The Adjustment Bureau

8 'your sister's sister' (2011), director: lynn shelton.

An underrated comedy gem from the 2010s , Your Sister's Sister sees Blunt starring opposite Mark Duplass and Rosemarie DeWitt . The plot follows Jack, who is invited into his best friend Iris' cabin while recovering from his brother's passing. When he sleeps with Iris' sister, Hannah, the trio find themselves in an unexpectedly awkward situation.

Like all the best dramedies, Your Sister's Sister finds humor in the tragedy of everyday life . Supported by three stellar performances, the film aptly navigates its intriguing yet challenging premise, offering an insightful look into the dynamic of romantic relationships and sisterly bonds. Although not a romantic comedy, Your Sister's Sister is compelling and ultimately satisfying , even if it never conforms to the expected tropes from the well-known genre.

7 'Mary Poppins Returns' (2018)

Director: rob marshall.

Stepping into the shoes of one of pop culture's most iconic characters is never easy. However, if there was ever a choice to bring Mary Poppins back to life, it was always Emily Blunt. The English actress plays the famous nanny in Mary Poppins Returns , which follows her journey back to the Banks' home to care for an older Michael and his children.

Although the film itself can't compare to the 1964 musical classic, Blunt is more than a worthy heir to Julie Andrews ' legacy . Her take on Mary Poppins is loyal to the character's essence without copying Andrews' approach. In fact, Blunt opts for an even more prickly approach, placing particular emphasis on Mary's sharper traits—vanity, pride, and elusiveness. Blunt's Mary Poppins is dynamic yet familiarly stoic, successfully reinventing the role for a new generation . And considering who came behind her, it's a mightily impressive feat.

6 'Looper' (2012)

Director: rian johnson.

Long before he reinvented the whodunit genre, Rian Johnson directed one of the best sci-fi movies from the 2010s. Looper stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as hitman Joe, who finds himself protecting a young mother and her son from his vengeful future self, who traveled to the past to kill the boy.

Daring and genuinely surprising, Looper is a fascinating look at the potential repercussions of a simple choice and how someone's entire fate can be made in only a few seconds. Blunt is devastating as Sarah, the young mother protecting her child from a danger that might actually come from within. The role is fiery, confrontational, and magnetic, defying easy interpretations. Blunt plays Sarah with all the conviction of a warrior while imbuing her with surprising moments of warmth . In a career full of Oscar-worthy performances, Looper is arguably the first time Blunt was genuinely robbed of AMPAS' recognition.

5 'The Devil Wears Prada' (2006)

Director: david frankel.

Although My Summer of Love was Blunt's film debut, The Devil Wears Prada was her breakthrough project. The actress steals every scene as the haughty and boastful Emily Charlton, Miranda Priestley's first assistant, who finds her role and security threatened by the arrival of Anne Hathaway 's Andy.

It's incredibly difficult to shine when Meryl Streep is doing career-best work as the now-iconic boss from hell, Miranda Priestley, but Blunt succeeded. Emily is the secret weapon in The Devil Wears Prada , a hilariously wicked yet never outright awful mean girl with some of the film's best lines and jokes. Blunt is spectacular in the role, embodying Emily's arrogance yet preventing her from being an outright antagonist. A true star-is-born role, Emily is biting yet irresistible and hilarious, and it's all thanks to Blunt's sharp sense of humor and, as it turns out, self-awareness.

4 'A Quiet Place' (2018)

Director: john krasinski.

Blunt was directed by her husband, John Krasinski , in the 2018 sci-fi horror A Quiet Place . Set in a world devastated by an invasion of blind aliens with acute hearing, the plot follows a family grieving the passing of their youngest son. As they prepare for the arrival of a new baby, the family must fight to stay alive.

A Quiet Place greatly benefits from the real-life and well-known bond between Blunt and Krasinski. Deprived of language, the pair must rely on expressions and furtive glances, resulting in a profoundly believable and sweeping depiction of love in the face of hardship. Blunt delivers a masterclass in A Quiet Place , especially during the now-famous birthing scene. The film itself is a thrilling exploration of family and parenthood, imbued with classic sci-fi chills that make it all the more captivating. A Quiet Place earned Blunt some of the best reviews in her career and cemented Krasinski as a talented and promising director.

3 'Edge of Tomorrow' (2014)

Director: doug liman.

When looking at her career, it's clear that Emily Blunt is an underrated sci-fi queen. The actress plays the tough Sergeant Rita Vrataski in Doug Liman 's ambitious sci-fi action film Edge of Tomorrow , starring opposite a delightful Tom Cruise , cast against type here.

Blunt has never been one to avoid risks, and her career is full of intriguing detours into genre content one might not necessarily expect from a typical English flower. Edge of Tomorrow shows Blunt at her badass best , the perfect companion for an equally impressive Tom Cruise, who subverts his action-man persona in favor of a more subtle approach to heroism. Edge of Tomorrow is a highlight of Blunt's career, a unique and daring entry into thinking-person sci-fi and a powerful showcase of Blunt's versatility. It remains impressive just how convincing and commanding she is in the role, creating one of the few truly iconic sci-fi heroines from the 21st century.

2 'Oppenheimer' (2023)

Director: christopher nolan.

After years of wonderful, unrecognized performances, Blunt finally received her first Oscar nomination for playing Kitty Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan 's 2023 epic biographical thriller Oppenheimer . Cillian Murphy stars as the titular scientist, with Blunt co-starring as his volatile and fierce wife.

It's very easy to discard what Blunt does in Oppenheimer ; her role could simply come across as a traditional wife, a supporting player in the titular man's story. However, Blunt is a quiet scene-stealer, commanding the scene every time she opens her mouth. In her hands, Kitty is a force of nature, a constant in Oppenheimer's life, unafraid to speak her mind and stand up for him, especially when he won't do it himself. Blunt's best scene showcases all she brings to Oppenheimer : it's a cathartic moment that lives and dies with her performance, as she says everything audiences have been wanting to say for over two hours. Oppenheimer is a modern masterpiece, and Kitty is among Nolan's best female characters , all thanks to Blunt, who turns a simple line into a desperate and explosive plea.

1 'Sicario' (2015)

Director: denis villeneuve.

What happens when one of this generation's best directors joins forces with an equally talented leading lady? One of the best films from the 2010s is born. Under the direction of Denis Villeneuve , Blunt delivers arguably her best performance to date as Special FBI Agent Kate Mercer in the action thriller Sicario .

Featuring some of Villeneuve's most inspired directorial moments, Sicario is a riveting thriller that never settles for cheap shocks. Blunt is outstanding as Mercer, wearing the character's idealism on her sleeve while keeping her competent and gripping. Quick Facts

Early years, movies and tv shows, husband john krasinski and kids, who is emily blunt.

British actor Emily Blunt is best known for the movies The Devil Wears Prada , Into The Woods , A Quiet Place , and Oppenheimer , for which she earned an Academy Award nomination. She pursued acting from a young age and found her earliest professional footing in theater prior to her movie debut in 2004’s My Summer of Love . Two years later, she enjoyed her breakthrough role as a cutthroat magazine assistant in The Devil Wears Prada . Blunt won a 2007 Golden Globe for her performance in the TV movie Gideon’s Daughter and has received six additional nominations. She is married to fellow actor John Krasinski , and the couple has two kids.

FULL NAME: Emily Blunt BORN: February 23, 1983 BIRTHPLACE: London, England SPOUSE: John Krasinski (2010-present) CHILDREN: Hazel and Violet ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: Pisces

Emily Blunt was born in London on February 23, 1983. She became interested in acting at an early age, and when she was 18, she landed the classic role of Juliet in Shakespeare ’s Romeo and Juliet in a production for the UK Chichester Festival. Around that same time, she made her debut on the London stage opposite Judi Dench in The Royal Family . For her work, Blunt was named best newcomer by The Evening Standard .

British TV soon came calling, and Blunt appeared on such shows as Foyle’s War and Agatha Christie : Poirot. She also landed a recurring role in the miniseries Empire . She then found her acting footing in TV movies such as Henry VIII (2003) and The Strange Case of Sherlock Holmes & Arthur Conan Doyle (2005).

Blunt made the jump to the big screen during this period, making an impression in My Summer of Love (2004), in which she played a character who had a summer fling with another woman. Her portrayal received raves, and her next big break was just around the corner.

The Devil Wears Prada and Edge of Tomorrow

In 2006, Blunt co-starred in the movie The Devil Wears Prada , based on the best-selling novel by the same name, and was nominated for a best supporting actress Golden Globe. She didn’t win in that category but did receive a Globe for her work in the TV movie Gideon’s Daughter . The Devil Wears Prada also earned Blunt a BAFTA nomination for its Rising Star award, and it marked the beginning of the end of her life on the small screen.

More and more roles followed, including parts in The Jane Austen Book Club, Dan in Real Life , and Charlie Wilson ’s War , all released in 2007. In 2008, Vanity Fair magazine named Blunt one of its Top Fresh Faces, and she followed that honor with such diverse films as Sunshine Cleaning (2008), The Young Victoria (2009; Golden Globe lead actress nomination for her portrayal of Queen Victoria ), and The Wolfman (2010).

What followed her increasingly solid performances were mainstream movies the likes of which Blunt’s career had not yet seen. She costarred in The Adjustment Bureau (2011), The Muppets (2011), Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2012; Golden Globe lead actress nomination), and Looper (2012) before appearing in the Tom Cruise –led sci-fi blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow (2014), a movie that both fans and critics applauded.

Into the Woods , A Quiet Place , and Beyond

The 2014 holiday season saw Blunt showcasing her singing chops in the film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical Into the Woods , costarring Anna Kendrick , Johnny Depp , and Tracey Ullman, among a league of other thespians. Blunt played the Baker’s Wife opposite James Corden , with the couple trying to have a child through the machinations of a witch ( Meryl Streep ). Blunt received her fifth Golden Globe nomination for the role.

The following year, she earned more acclaim for her lead role in Sicario , playing an FBI agent who becomes embroiled in the Mexican drug wars. The project saw her reunited with Benicio Del Toro , with whom she costarred in The Wolfman . In 2016, she played Queen Freya in The Huntsman: Winter’s War .

In early 2018, Blunt starred in the hit horror flick A Quiet Place alongside her real-life husband John Krasinski , who also directed the feature. Later that year, she headlined the successful musical Mary Poppins Returns , drawing another Golden Globe nod for her performance as the titular nanny. Next up for the actor was a return to the world of silent horrors in A Quiet Place Part II (2020), followed by a pairing with Dwayne Johnson in the action-adventure Jungle Cruise, based on the popular Disneyland ride.

Oscar Nomination for Oppenheimer

Despite taking a hiatus from acting in 2023, Blunt had a very successful year. She had already put in the hours for the blockbuster biopic Oppenheimer , which released that July. The result was one of her most acclaimed performances to date. Blunt portrayed Kitty Oppenheimer, the wife of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer , played by Cillian Murphy , as he directed the creation of the atomic bomb. She earned her seventh Golden Globe nod and notched a major career first: an Academy Award nomination.

The first-time Oscar nominee learned she was competing in the Best Supporting Actress race while walking her dog with her husband, John Krasinski . “I did have a brief cry in the middle of Brooklyn, brief weep directly after picking up my dog’s poop,” Blunt later shared .

The actor also appeared in the Netflix movie Pain Hustlers about the opioid epidemic. However, the movie was markedly less successful than Oppeneheimer .

Blunt is married to fellow actor John Krasinski . The couple wed in 2010 and have two daughters together. Hazel was born in February 2014 followed by Violet in June 2016.

Blunt and Krasinski also have enjoyed a professional relationship through the horror series A Quiet Place , in which they played an onscreen couple. Krasinski directed both movies in the series.

Prior to her marriage, Blunt was in a relationship with Canadian singer Michael Bublé . They met in 2005 and began dating. She appeared on the song “Me and Mrs. Jones” on the Bublé 2007 album Call Me Irresponsible before the couple split in 2008.

Who's Rebecca Ferguson's 'idiot' co-star? Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt clear their names

R ebecca Ferguson knows how to advocate for herself on set — and now it seems she has extra support from "Jungle Cruise" duo Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt.

Johnson and Blunt, in separate statements, showed love to their former co-star Ferguson after she revealed a behind-the-scenes interaction with a "an absolute idiot of a co-star" left her in tears and with a desire to stand up for herself. "This human being was being so insecure and angry because this person couldn't get scenes out," she recalled in a new episode of Josh Smith's "Reign" podcast , published Tuesday.

The "Dune: Part Two" and "Mission Impossible" star added: "I think because I was so vulnerable and uncomfortable that I got screamed at. Because this person was No. 1 on a call sheet, there was no safety net for me. No one had my back and I would cry walking off set."

Ferguson told Smith she returned to the undisclosed project the following day and stood her ground against her co-star, ordering them to "get off my set." "I remember being so scared," she said, recalling how she told the fellow actor to "F off." Producers told Ferguson that the unidentified actor had to remain on the project, but allowed her to continue filming without looking at them face-to-face. Ferguson also recalled getting validation from the film's director, whom she also did not name.

"The director said, 'You're right, I'm not taking care of everyone else. I'm trying to fluff this person because it's so unstable,'" Ferguson said. "It took so long for me to get to that, but from that moment, I have never let myself get to a point when I've got home and gone, 'Why did that happen?' "

In her interview, Ferguson took care not to hint at any particular actor. However, she did confirm neither her "Greatest Showman" co-star Hugh Jackman, nor "Mission Impossible" love interest Tom Cruise caused her grief. As the "Reign" episode went viral Tuesday, social media users began speculating who exactly was at the center of Ferguson's comments.

Among the curious internet sleuths was Johnson, who tweeted his support for Ferguson. "Hate seeing this but love seeing her stand up to b—," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Ferguson and Johnson shared the screen in the 2014 action film "Hercules."

"Rebecca was my guardian angel sent from heaven on our set," the Rock continued. "I love that woman. I’d like to find out who did this."

Hours after Johnson's tweet, a representative for Blunt responded to the speculation swirling around the "Oppenheimer" star, who shared the screen with Ferguson in 2016's "The Girl on the Train." In a Wednesday statement to the Daily Mail , Blunt's representative said, "Rebecca and Emily are friends and there's nothing but love between them."

Still, Ferguson's online fans are on the hunt to find the unnamed actor. However, identifying the actor who indirectly helped Ferguson find her voice might take some time. Since beginning her film career in the early 2000s, Ferguson has starred alongside handfuls of actors including Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant, Justin Theroux, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ewan McGregor.

Later in her "Reign" interview, Ferguson touted the safety she felt on the set of "Dune: Part Two" and the "kind and professional" cast and crew she worked with. "From my perspective, I was sitting there just feeling like I'm holding everyone's hand," she said before fangirling about co-star Christopher Walken.

" Dune: Part Two " stars Ferguson as Lady Jessica, the mother of Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides, a royal heir-turned-desert-dwelling warrior. The Denis Villeneuve sci-fi epic premieres Friday and also stars Zendaya, Austin Butler, Josh Brolin, Florence Pugh and Léa Seydoux.

The Rock Had A Sweet Comment For Emily Blunt After News Broke The Jungle Cruise Co-Stars Will Reunite In A New Movie

Just lovely...

Fans of the 2021 hit Jungle Cruise (which you can watch with a Disney+ subscription ) have been looking forward to another pairing between leads Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson ever since. So, when news broke that the stars will finally reunite for the upcoming A24 movie , The Smashing Machine , many people were delighted (despite the fact that Jungle Cruise 2 isn’t bringing them back together…yet ). It looks like The Rock is also very excited and eager to reunite with his one-time co-star, because he had a sweet comment for Blunt after the news came out.

What Did The Rock Say About Emily Blunt After News Broke About Them Reuniting On Screen?

While in some ways it seems like forever ago that Emily Blunt and The Rock were paired for the action adventure Jungle Cruise , anyone who saw that movie or watched any number of (sometimes rather “not safe for Disney”) interviews with the duo as they promoted it will be unable to forget the wonderful banter between them. This is the main reason why so many movie-goers want to see them star in another film, and now that it looks like we’re getting our wish, The Rock has left a sweet comment for Blunt that the whole world can see on his Instagram :

She’s inspiring - one of one. Emily Blunt Benny Safdie A24 “The Smashing Machine”

Considering how inspiring the superstar wrestler turned actor has been to so many people over the decades, it must be a good feeling to have him call you out as a fellow star who’s “inspiring” to himself.

As you can see from his comment, he also gave a shout out to the writer/director of the upcoming The Smashing Machine , Benny Safdie (who just so happens to also be a part of the stacked Oppenheimer cast like the Oscar-nominated Blunt ), who will be directing without his brother, Josh, for the first time.

The new movie will see Johnson portray real-life MMA/UFC legend Mark Kerr during the prime of his career in 2000, when he was also dealing with drug addiction and mental health issues. Blunt, meanwhile, will star as Kerr’s wife, Dawn Staples, who will have lots of trouble as she attempts to figure out how she fits in her husband’s “chaotic and contradictory world.”

If you can still smell what The Rock is cooking, the scent coming off of this one kinda has the aroma of a potential Academy Award nominee already, doesn’t it? There’s nothing like a passion project to deliver the goods on the big screen, and Johnson has been working on getting this based-on-a-true-story tale off the ground since 2019, when he called Kerr’s life in and out of the ring “an incredible story” about someone who’d “gone through it all.”

It sounds like this film is going to be one for the books, and because Blunt and Johnson have finally found a cool project to reunite on, their fans now have something else to look forward to.

Dwayne johnson has noncommittal jungle cruise 2 update ahead of next movie with emily blunt.

Dwayne Johnson gives a tentative update on a possible Jungle Cruise 2 as he reunites with co-star Emily Blunt for new movie, The Smashing Machine.

  • Dwayne Johnson expressed interest in reuniting with Emily Blunt for Jungle Cruise 2 at the 2024 Oscars.
  • While he said he wants to do it, he also stopped before confirming it would happen, saying, "We'll see."
  • Disney is likely to greenlight Jungle Cruise 2 due to the popularity of the original and the star power of Johnson and Blunt.

Dwayne Johnson discusses the possibility of reuniting with Emily Blunt for Jungle Cruise 2 . The Black Adam star teamed up with Oscar-nominee Blunt in director Jaume Collet-Serra's 2021 fantasy adventure movie, where he played a riverboat captain who takes a scientist and her brother along the Amazon River in search of the Tree of Life. Jungle Cruise , which was released amid a struggling box office around the COVID-19 pandemic, was a modest success, and a month after its debut, a sequel was announced to be in development. However, there have been few updates since.

In an exclusive interview with Variety at the 2024 Oscars, Johnson discussed his impending reunion with Blunt in the upcoming Benny Safdie MMA drama The Smashing Machine. He spoke in glowing terms about his co-star, stating, " It’s much different than what we did with ‘Jungle Cruise,’ but I got to tell you there is no greater partner in our industry than Emily who I would want to have to rip this thing open ." He then dropped an update about the possibility of Jungle Cruise 2 being made. Read the former WWE superstar's full comments below:

Possibly. Down the line, yeah, I’d wanna do it. Maybe, we’ll see .

Will Jungle Cruise 2 Be Made?

Jungle Cruise is one of Johnson's best-rated movies , and it is entirely possible there would be an appetite for a sequel, especially on the Disney+ streaming platform where the original found popularity. The star power of Blunt and Johnson, along with the enduring appeal of adventure and quest stories, means that there is plenty of opportunity for new stories in a follow-up movie. Indeed, with the Indiana Jones franchise coming to a close, there is going to be a gap in the market for action-adventure movies, and there is every chance Jungle Cruise could successfully fill it .

Disney will be keen to return to successful family-friendly fare after a year or so of box office disappointments, and Jungle Cruise already has an audience, so it could be an easy project to greenlight. It will depend on the availability of both Johnson and Blunt, who each have packed schedules and are in high demand for multiple projects these days. Still, the chemistry between the pair, as well as their strong friendship, suggests this is likely to be a sequel they would jump at the chance to appear in .

Jungle Cruise 2 would mark another franchise for Johnson and could even develop into a trilogy of successful movies. Producer Beau Flynn and director Collet-Serra are also expected to return for any follow-up that might be made, although it is unclear as to when production might begin. Jungle Cruise 2 would be the third collaboration between Johnson and Blunt, and both of the leads would need to have the availability, inclination, and desire to bring their characters to life on the big screen once again.

Jungle Cruise is available to stream exclusively on Disney+

In 99% of Hollywood movies, the goal is to make the stunt work invisible. Audiences are supposed to believe that the star — or better yet, the character he plays — put his own life at risk jumping off buildings, blowing up cars or duking it out with squads of bad guys. In “ The Fall Guy ,” the stuntman gets to be the hero (of an insanely overcomplicated story), while the star is a prima donna who claims to do all his own stunts but needs his double to step in when things get tough.

Everybody knows that stuntmen are more impressive than the movie stars whose gnarliest feats they perform. It’s the reason Tom Cruise insists on doing his own stunts. And daredevil Cliff Booth of site:variety.com “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is by far the coolest person Brad Pitt ever played. In the role of stunt ace Colt Seavers — originated by Lee Majors on Glen A. Larson’s early-’80s television show — Gosling gets to have it both ways.

The character of Colt sets Guinness Book records (most notably a crazy cannon roll in which driving ace Logan Holladay flips an SUV eight and a half times), but because the film reveals how such tricks are achieved, audiences are trained to look for the signs: digital face replacements, fancy cutting, doubles shown only from behind. Though we know Gosling just stepped in to give the thumbs-up when each stunt is done, in a classy way, the star is actually sharing credit with the crew — not just the stunt guys either, but everyone who hustles to make a movie. Gosling comes off looking gracious, and at the end of the day, he’s still the one who gets the girl.

Worth noting: Back in 1981, stunt legend Hal Needham directed “The Cannonball Run,” which means the transition from double to director is nothing new. Former stunt maven David Leitch has been directing features for a decade, starting with “John Wick.” With this project, the helmer has an unparalleled opportunity to honor his original profession. In recent years, bluescreens, digital effects and the fast-evolving field of AI have pushed those who do the real-world exploits even farther to impress, with wirework, “oners” and other techniques showcased here.

“The Fall Guy” doesn’t feature Leitch’s best action. That would still be “Atomic Blonde,” though “The Fall Guy” is a stronger movie all around, thanks to the dynamic between Colt and Jody. Screenwriter Drew Pearce has crafted a crackling 21st-century screwball romance between Gosling and Blunt’s characters at the center of an epic stunt spectacular. Visually, Leitch and DP Jonathan Sela make the whole endeavor look so glossy, you’d think you were watching a feature-length Super Bowl commercial. We’re talking crisp, meticulously lit sequences in which the colors pop, sparks literally fly and even the below-the-line characters look like … well, movie stars.

Here, the A-list attention hog is an actor named Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), who looks like Alex Pettyfer with his frosted tips, sounds like Matthew McConaughey with his cowboy drawl, and acts like an egotistical jerk. Colt’s been doubling for Tom for years, until take two of an ultra-dangerous stunt — a plunge of more than 100 feet — leaves him with a broken back. Colt had been seeing Jody, but the injury brings their relationship and his career to an end. Eighteen months later, Colt would give anything for another shot, which is why he leaps at the chance to work on her movie, shooting in Sydney.

Once he gets there, Colt learns that she’s still angry with him (this bit doesn’t quite work — why should he be the one to apologize for what happened?). Blunt and Gosling share a cute scene where she orders multiple takes of a painful stunt — Colt is repeatedly lit on fire and slammed into a rock — while voicing her grievances over a bullhorn for all to hear. There’s not much doubt that they’ll work things out, although the script supplies a far kookier plot for Colt to untangle in the disappearance of Tom from the production. It seems this is the real reason the producer Gail called him to Australia.

And yet, the movie never really explores what makes Colt tick: Does he have a death wish? An unusually high pain tolerance? (A flashback to kid Colt’s career-inspiring moment might have been nice.) Leitch is hardly objective on the subject, which could explain why “The Fall Guy” avoids a familiar trope in movies about dudes with dangerous jobs — namely, that their girlfriends don’t want to see them die. It also accounts for several not-so-subtle mentions of how the Academy ought to add a stunt category (Gosling and Blunt paid tribute to the profession at this year’s Oscars ceremony).

The explanation for Tom’s disappearance is preposterous, but makes a certain amount of sense within the movie’s underdog view of stunt people. Colt’s been tapped to take the fall, as it were, while the film is designed to educate audiences about all the things — fighting, crashing, jumping, swinging, falling — doubles do. If the movie feels overstuffed, that’s because Leitch wants to give audiences more than just a taste, but the full buffet of what his trade is capable of. By the end, they can’t help but appreciate just how hard it is to make action look easy.
