What nobody tells you about Brahmatal - Jatropani Peak

While Brahmatal Trek is getting increasingly popular, most people don’t know about its sibling – Jatropani Peak.  Jatropani Peak at 4071 mts is a day’s hike further from Brahmatal Campsite on the west ridge. If you are a seasoned hiker, then you can go Jatropani Peak summit within the same time frame of 6 Days as it for Brahmatal.

From Jatropani peak the Himalayan panorama expands to showcase Chaukhamba (7138m), Neelkantha (6597m) and Kamet (7756m). The route to Jatropani Peak goes from Brahmatal Top to the grassy ridge on the west and further extends to expose the boulder region and eventually climbs to Jatropani West Peak at 4071mts.

Jatoparni Top is highest point from Brahmatal and also known as Khamila Top. During the trek you can see Mrigthuni, Devtoli and Maikoti peak of Kumaon ranges. Mastering Alpine Lakes: The Ultimate Brahmatal Trek Guide

Brahmatal is a highly sought-after destination for adventurers for several compelling reasons. Offering a unique winter trekking experience, the Brahmatal trek allows adventure enthusiasts to witness frozen landscapes, snowy trails, breathtaking panoramic views, and even walk on frozen lakes. Completely frozen from October to March, it is home to a unique blend of tranquillity and adventure. Before you embark on an expedition of your own, let us guide you through this winter wonderland.

Why Brahmatal is the most popular winter trek in Uttarakhand, India

snow camping

The Brahmatal Trek in the winter is the only trek that leads to an alpine lake and even lets you camp on the snow near it, providing a rare and exceptional experience. Snow blankets the trails as well as the rhododendron and oak forests, creating breathtaking vistas.

The winter trek to Brahmatal is particularly popular because of the extended golden hours when the mountain peaks light up with a brilliant alpenglow in the evenings. The rare experience of trekking on not one but two frozen lakes, Bekaltal and Brahmatal, makes this winter trek an absolute favourite among adventure enthusiasts.

Exploring the high-altitude haven: Brahmatal location

Brahmatal, at an altitude of 12,250 ft, is located right in the heart of a flowering meadow in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand. Surrounded by lush forests, most of the trek is done under forest cover, decreasing the chances of altitude sickness due to the abundance of fresh oxygen.

We Wellcome You To The Abode Of “Brahma The Creators”

Brahmatal, a celestial lake at 3444 meters above sea level, is hidden in the Himalayan meadows. The summit of Brahmatal is at 3718mtrs. Since the beginning of time, Lord Brahma has considered Brahmatal his abode for meditation. Brahmatal confirms the form of Brahmkamal the primordial flower in the Himalayan region, Uttarakhand. Brahmatal is located in Chamoli Garhwal. Brahmatal lake is completely frozen from October to March in winter. All trekking routes to Brahmatal have snow covered trails. The summit crown of Brahmatal is snowcapped. Trekkers can easily reach the snow-covered peak of Brahmatal without difficulty. You will find a lot of wild life along the trek route: Barasingha and Himalayan foxes, White beer, Himalayan wild go (Black & white), Ibex/Thar, as well as Himalayan wild goat (Black, & White), Ibex/Thar, which licks the mountain slopes to disperse medicinal juice of Shilajeet, Katukki… Monal, an effervescent Bird in Uttarakhand, with feathers in a rainbow palette, welcomes you into the mountains.

The Brahmatal, which is surrounded densely by Deodar, Rododendron and Thuner (Taxus Baccata), Khorsu, etc., ensures that there is always enough oxygen. Monsoon is a great time to stroll through this beautiful valley in lush-green vegetation. Animals venture to the plateau at this time of year to graze on the Himalayan wet grassland. The elusive land of Brahmatal is a place where every traveller feels a close connection to other famous Himalayan summits throughout the year.

Upper Kunji’s meadow is a great alternative grazing area for brave farmer travellers. Upper Kuji remains a hidden treasure trove of Himalayan serenity for trekkers and locals alike. Brahmatal, a lake tucked away in the deepest parts of Brahmatal, is steeped in the mythos Uttarakhand Himalayas. Brahmatal is a rare Himalayan destination that can be reached by trekking in December, January and February.

There are many pull factors to this trek. The landscapes change from dark and shadowy oak forests and rhododendrons to snow-covered meadows, lakeside camping near Bekaltal, and spectacular high peaks glimmering against a brilliant sky. Because there are rarely colossal ice-capped peaks such as Mt. Nanda Ghunti, Mt. Trishul can be viewed on a low-lying trek such as this one.

The gradual ascent of rolling hills is what makes the slopes so steep.Brahmatal Trek This route is suitable for both beginners and more experienced trekkers. The trek is largely under forest cover, which reduces the risk of altitude sickness. The trek won’t deprive you of a thrilling winter experience. It will offer you the sweet mellow sound of falling snow, an amazing trail, and the silence of the oaks and rhododendrons.

This trek deserves a special mention from the shutterbugs. The diverse frames include:

  • Snow-laden forests.
  • White-gold high peaks in Alpenglow.
  • An alpine mountainscape of a single tree perched on the icy shores at the Brahmatal Lake.

The Complete Guide To Brahmatal Trek –  Perfect Trek for Beginners

Because of their stunning mountain views, some of our favourite treks are among our most popular. You can think of Chaukhambha, Deoriatal Chandrashila, or Bandarpoonch, Dayara Bugyal. These magnified views of huge mountains are rare. Brahmatal, however, is the best trek. This view is unbeatable.

Here’s why. You can see the white wall of Trishul massif from your second day as you climb out of oak and rhododendron forest. These views are closer as you climb the ridge towards Jhandi Top.

You are at the very center of the mountain views from Jhandi Top. To your left is Mt Trishul, and to your right is Mt Nanda Ghunti. The Ronti Saddle is the ridge connecting Mt Trishul to Mt Nanda Ghunti, which you can even see.

Mt Trishul, and Mt Nanda Ghunti are your guides throughout the trek. The highest point of the trek can be accessed from the side that faces Mt Trishul or Mt Nanda Ghunti. This trek is worthy of being mentioned among the top treks with stunning mountain views.

After this Priyanka became curious to explore more, so later she did the BramhaTal Trek, Nag Tibba Trek, and Chopta Tungnath and list goes on. Now she taken this trekking and adventure experience and converted it into a profession. Now she love to advice and guide trekkers. Why You Should Do Brahmatal Trek?

1: the rhododendron forest extends from lohajung up to bekaltal.

Brahmatal is a forest paradise with stunning walks. The woodland walks allow you to explore the ages-old forest of Oaks and Rhododendrons. The thing that sticks with me is the special section dedicated to Rhododendrons ! From Bekaltal, there is an area that is demarcated Rhododendron forests.

The Rhodo forests provide a delight for the eyes. The branches twist and spin with different shapes. The trunks are generally clean and smooth. They are low and create a lovely roof in the upper part. They’re close enough to make a great shade of green over your head.

You can see this during the entire year. You will see the pink-colored roof if you are here between  March and April . If you visit during  winter, you’ll receive a snow-white carpet.

2 : The meadows of the ridge starting from Tilandi towards Jhandi Top

On the second day, you ascend out of Bekaltal, climbing up some of the most gorgeous trees, including oaks and rhododendrons. When you reach the forest summit, you’re intrigued and eager to discover what is beyond the trees.

It is a meadow you enter from the summit, and right in front of you lies a wall of mountains in white. If you have climbed to the ridge (which is in a parallel line to Ali Bugyal of the Roopkund Trek), You will be able to see magnificent panoramas across The Trishul range.

It is clear that you’re climbing to the top, but the sheer size of the  mountain ranges that are so close  is unique for Brahmatal.

From there, up to Jhandi, the top, is among the top ridge walks in our mountains. On the one hand, you will see the Trishul mountain range that stretches out. On the other side, you can see mountains with layers of ranges arranged in the order of height into Deval or Tharali.

You traveled through these villages to get to the camp’s base. On your right, just below  Trishul, The range extends across the Roopkund trekking route . Every single landmark, every campsite, and each climb of the Roopkund trek can be seen from the Brahmatal Ridge. I’ve never stood at one point and then walked to another, and that is, in fact, the most famous of all treks like this.

Best Time To Do Brahmatal Trek

Brahmatal trek in winter.

While most trekking trails within the Himalayas close during winter’s peak between January and February, Brahmatal is easily accessible. It is accessible between December and February, after that, until spring. This is excellent as winter snow can be heavenly on the Brahmatal trekking, even though it does make the trek slightly more difficult. The experience, however, is worthwhile. In the winter, the rhododendrons and oak trees bow to the weight of snow and give a feeling of Narnia to your trek. It occurs as soon as you depart from Lohajung. Beyond being snowy, the scene of the frozen Bekaltal Lake is captivating. Being near it gives the impression that it is frozen. However, be cautious when you step onto the frozen lake. The ice may need more robust to hold your weight based on the time of year. A different highlight of winter is the opportunity to camp on the snow in Tilandi, which is awe-inspiring for sunsets and sunrises. As opposed to the autumn months, these bright colors are reflecting off the white snow-covered landscape.

Brahmatal Trek in Autumn

The blooms you saw during spring will have died and disappeared in the fall, leaving behind a shadowy canopy of rhododendrons and oak trees. This time of year is when trees shed leaves and provide a distinctive crunch when you cross their branches. Once the setting is in place, look at the mountains’ views. These are the best in autumn and are clearest after monsoon when the air is clear from fog. This season, carefully watch the mountain Sandhya has mentioned in her walk guide. The ridge is along Ali Bugyal of the famed Roopkund trail. You can view the vast Trishul range rise above Asia’s biggest meadow from this ridge. This is a fantastic view. As you continue up the trail, you’ll reach Jhandi at the top; stunning mountain views, including Mt Chaukhamba, Mt Neelkanth, and Mt Hathi Ghoda, open up beneath the blue, autumnal sky. Then there’s another characteristic of autumn that needs to be talked about more: the sunrise and sunsets. They’re the most beautiful of the season in the fall. Particularly at the Tilandi camping site because it’s situated on a mountain. The words are not enough, But be aware of the sun setting when you get to Tilandi. It’s an incredible spectacle. The sun’s rays splash vibrant red shades over the skies. The next day, get up early and observe the glorious sunrise from the opposite side. Also, autumn is an ideal time to hike for those who enjoy empty trails. However, it’s full throughout the season. If you want a peaceful experience, try to find dates following the Diwali/Dusshera holidays and before the start of winter. Currently, the Brahmatal trail can be the lowest level of activity.

Brahmatal Trek in Spring

While Deoriatal-Chandrashila pops up in discussions about rhododendrons, only a few know that Brahmatal, too, is a charming trek to do in spring. The slopes are dotted by the rhododendrons (Buransh). The hills appear bright in spring, with Rhodos in bloom, dark pink, and crimson. Imagine this as a landscape of melting snow! You will find them only during the hike. But you might begin to spot trees with flowers near Lohajung itself! Then, when you set out on your hike, make sure you look for the section that runs between Bekaltal and Tilandi. When you leave Bekaltal, it is a rhodo woodland, and blossoming flowers create an overhang for the head of your trek. Also, watch for rhodos after the hike in Khorurai. To experience a truly magical moment, trek through Brahmatal in the early spring (March). To walk on snow while you view the blossoms in bloom, at this time, there is snow that is higher than Tilandi. As the seasons progress, it recedes towards the upper altitudes around the Brahmatal Lake, which is situated at 12,250 feet. In mid-April, all of the snow that was on the trail, as well as around it, had gone to melt.

Day 6 – Lohajung to Rishikesh

The final day is dedicated to the return journey back to Rishikesh. Trekkers can extend their stay in Rishikesh for an additional cost. During my stay, I opted for the Live Free Hostel, which the trekking agency recommended.

Which is the Best Season to do the Brahmatal Trek?

The Brahmatal trek offers distinct experiences depending on the season you embark on the adventure.

Winter season (December to February) showcases the trek at its most enchanting, with snow-capped peaks and trails blanketed in pristine snow. However, brace yourself for freezing weather during this time.

Spring season (March to May) unveils a breathtaking landscape adorned with vibrant rhododendron flowers, painting the trail in hues of pink and red, creating a picturesque setting.

The Autumn season (September to November) treats trekkers to crisp, chilly weather and awe-inspiring views of snow-capped mountains, making it another favourable time to undertake the trek.

Conversely, it’s not recommended to attempt the trek during the summer months (June to August) and the rainy season due to unfavourable weather conditions.

What to Pack for the Trek?

Make sure to bring along an additional bag to store items and clothing not needed for the trail at Lohajung. Additionally, if you’re offloading your backpack, carrying a daypack for essentials during the trek is advisable.

Sleeping Bag: The trekking agency provides a sleeping bag each night, but during winter, I carried my own for added warmth.

Inner Blanket: Provided by the trekking agency, this liner is used in the sleeping bag daily.

  • Hiking T-shirts: 3 pairs
  • Hiking Pants: 2 pairs
  • Breathable Underwear: Clean pairs for each day plus two extra
  • Thermal Top and Pants: 1 to 2 pairs
  • Fleece Jacket: 1
  • Hiking Socks: 1 pair for each day plus two extra
  • Woollen Socks for the night: 1 pair
  • Night Clothes: 1 pair with a sweater

Footwear and Accessories:

  • Lunch Box (secure)
  • Toilet Rolls
  • Deodorant (travel size)
  • Eco-Friendly Paper Soaps
  • Toothpaste, Toothbrush, and Tongue Cleaner
  • Safety Pins
  • Personal Medications, including Diamox
  • Power Bank and Charging Cord
  • Water Purification Tablets

These essentials ensure a comfortable and safe trekking experience while adequately preparing for varying weather conditions and terrain challenges.

Essential Items for the Trek:

  • Refillable Water Bottle
  • Emergency Thermal Blanket
  • Headlamp with Extra Batteries
  • Trail Snacks (Dry Fruits, Chocolates, Biscuits)
  • First Aid Kit and Personal Medications
  • Poncho/Rain Coat
  • Fleece Jacket
  • Beanie and Balaclava
  • Hand Gloves (Inner and Outer, Waterproof)
  • Sun Protection Cap
  • Sunglasses and Sunscreen
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Camera (Optional)

These items ensure preparedness for various situations and challenges during the trek, keeping you comfortable and safe throughout the journey.

Other Things Required for the Trail

  • Trekking Shoes: A sturdy and comfortable pair of trekking shoes is essential for navigating varied terrain with ease and stability.
  • Trekking Poles: Trekking poles provide added support and balance, especially on uneven or steep trails, reducing knee strain and improving overall stability.

How Many Layers of Clothes do I need?

I recommend layering up with five layers of clothing for evening and nighttime at the campsites to combat the rapid temperature drop after sunset. Start with thermals as the base layer, followed by a T-shirt, sweater, fleece jacket, and finally, a padded or down jacket for added warmth.

During the trek itself, you won’t require as many layers. A T-shirt paired with a fleece jacket should suffice to keep you comfortable while on the move.

Ensure to cover your neck, ears and head at all times, including when trekking.

Do we need to Carry our Backpack throughout the Trek?

You can have your backpacks offloaded, with ponies carrying them at an additional INR 250 per day per person. If you opt for this service, having a day pack for the trail is essential.

How much did the Trek Cost?

Note: My expenses are based on travelling from Bangalore.

Trek Charges: INR 10,309.

Additional Expenses:

  • Backpack Offload Option: INR 1,000.
  • Transportation between Rishikesh and Lohajung: INR 2,600 per person (round trip).
  • Flight Charges between Bangalore and Delhi : INR 8,500 for a return trip.
  • Bus Charges between Delhi and Rishikesh: INR 1,200 for a return trip.
  • Stay at Rishikesh: INR 1,500 for a private room.
  • Taxi Charges and Miscellaneous: INR 2,000.

Total – INR 27109 per person.

Is there any Wildlife on the Trail?

Indeed, the trail boasts abundant wildlife encounters. We had a thrilling encounter with a bear during our last trekking day. While the bear pursued one of our fellow trekkers, our group’s unity and loud presence deterred the bear, prompting it to retreat with a formidable roar.

Additionally, at the Thilandi campsite, we were treated to the majestic sight of a Himalayan Griffon vulture , adding a fascinating touch to our adventure.

How are the Toilets at the Campsites and on the Trails?

Dry toilets are utilized at the campsites, featuring a pit covered by standing tents. Instead of water, sand dust is used to cover waste, with strict instructions to avoid water or wet tissues, relying solely on toilet paper.

During the trails, nature serves as the restroom, with the wild behind the trees serving as facilities. While this lack of commercialization preserves the trail’s natural charm, it also means no tea houses or toilets along the way.

How was the food provided by India Hikes?

The food experience during the trek was truly outstanding, and it was one of the main reasons I chose India Hikes for this journey. Every meal was served fresh and piping hot, leaving a lasting impression. A highlight of the culinary delights was when we were treated to hot and delicious gulab jamuns at the Brahmatal campsite.

What was the Paperwork Required?

The Brahmatal trek necessitated some paperwork to be completed before the journey:

  • Medical Certificate: Signed by a physician, detailing any pre-existing medical conditions and blood pressure readings.
  • Waiver Form: Signed by all participants, acknowledging the risks involved in the trek.
  • Proof of COVID Vaccination: Certifying completion of both vaccine doses.
  • Proof of Identification: Valid ID for verification purposes.
  • Pre-filled Interstate COVID Pass : Required by the Uttarakhand government for entry into the state.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, it’s imperative to consult your doctor before embarking on the trek.

Lessons Learned

  • When opting for interstate buses, it’s advisable to choose government-operated services for their reliability and minimal risk of cancellations. For travel to Uttarakhand, consider utilizing the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation buses.
  • For flights, complete the pre-check-in process and have all necessary documents readily available. Given the rapidly changing circumstances, stay updated on interstate travel regulations.
  • Select dry-fit clothing for the trek, and prioritize trek pants with pockets for conveniently stashing your phone and trail snacks.
  • Layering clothing allows for easy adjustment to changing temperatures during the trek.
  • Even with a rain cover for your backpack, safeguard your clothes and electronics by storing them in additional carry bags for extra protection.
  • Pack one or two pairs of warm socks specifically for the chilly nights.
  • Consider bringing hand warmers for comfort in cold conditions, readily available at stores like Decathlon.
  • Include extra shoe laces in your gear for unforeseen circumstances.
  • If you lack adequate gear, consider renting high-quality equipment from the trekking agency.
  • Carry some cash for purchasing refreshments at dhabas along the trail.
  • Keep headlamps easily accessible for navigating in low-light conditions.
  • Trekking poles offer valuable support and stability during the trek.
  • Maintain a steady and cautious pace on the trail, prioritizing safety over speed and taking small, deliberate steps.

How to Get to Rishikesh?

Rishikesh does not have an airport; the nearest one is in Dehradun. If you’re travelling solo, I recommend flying to Dehradun and taking a bus to Rishikesh. Indigo and Air Vistara are two airline providers that operate flights between major cities and Delhi/Dehradun.

The distance from Dehradun to Rishikesh is approximately 50 kilometres, with a travel time of about an hour by road.

From Delhi to Rishikesh, the distance is roughly 250 kilometres, and the journey typically takes 4 to 5 hours by car.

By Public Transport

The most reliable way to travel from Delhi to Rishikesh is by bus, with the journey typically taking around 5 hours by road.

Avoid booking private buses, as they often cancel at the last minute. I experienced this firsthand when a bus scheduled to depart at 8 PM was cancelled at 6:30 PM. Left without alternative transportation, I had to settle for a local red-coloured bus with uncomfortable seats.

For those travelling between Dehradun and Delhi, numerous frequent buses are available, lasting just over an hour.

Refer to the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation for buses.

Travelers can take a train from Delhi to Haridwar, where they can transfer to a bus bound for Rishikesh.

Similarly, one can catch a train from Dehradun to Haridwar and then continue to Rishikesh. This entire journey typically lasts around 3 hours and 30 minutes.

For the latest train schedules and information, it’s advisable to consult the IRCTC website.

Is Brahmatal Trek Safe for Solo Female Trekkers?

Generally, trekking is safest with a trekking buddy or through a reputable trekking agency. I highly recommend against attempting this trek independently or even with your group without the assistance of a local guide. The trekking agency I chose was particularly adept at catering to solo female trekkers, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

Download the Emergency Plus app for any unforeseen situations. The app does not require a mobile network; it shows your location. This is useful to inform the emergency services in case of any emergency. If you are a tourist, always have good comprehensive travel insurance to cover yourself in case of any emergency.

Closing Notes

Trekking in the Himalayas becomes an addiction, with each journey leaving an indelible mark on your soul. The breathtaking scenery, the camaraderie shared with fellow trekkers, the awe-inspiring starry nights, the serene snow-covered landscapes, and the endearing mountain dogs all create unforgettable memories that linger long after the trek ends. It’s no wonder you yearn to return and relive those precious moments.

Lohajung is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand and is 250 km away from Rishikesh. It takes about 10-11 hours to reach the village. Transportation to Lohajung will be arranged by Trek The Himalayas in Tata Sumo or a similar vehicle. Reaching Lohajung you will check into the guesthouse.

From Rishikesh to Lohajung, you will drive across mountain roads, and on a clear day, you can see the Garhwal Himalayas in the distance. Drive along with a tranquil setting with the River Ganga keeping you company. Along the way, you will come across three of the five major holy confluences of the country; Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karanprayag. Devprayag sees the confluence of the Alakananda and Bhagirathi Rivers. You can see distinct turquoise and teal colours of two rivers merging together. There’s interesting folklore revolving around the naming of the village. The locals say that Goddess Parvati had a ‘Jung’ (war in Hindi) with a demon named ‘Lohasur’ here and hence the naming of the village. Lohajung has a small market as well where you can purchase trek gear and essentials that might be valuable on your trek.

The trek commences from Lohajung village. You will follow a well laid out manmade trail that will take you upwards towards Gujreni. As you ascend through the upper region of Lohajung, the trail leads you through a charming forest path, punctuated by a few scattered houses. A short trek will bring Mandoli village into view. Keep climbing higher and you will reach the confluence of the Kali and Pindari Rivers, you are now in the beautiful Kali Valley.

Keep following the water pipes, youll pass a small cluster of homes. This patch is adorned with exquisite rhododendron trees that transform this part of the trail into a vibrant spectacle from February to March. After a couple of hours of trekking, a well-deserved rest awaits at Begum, a vantage point offering splendid views of Himalayan meadows. About 10 minutes into your walk from Begum, you will arrive at a stream crossing and after about an hour of trekking, you will arrive at the Gujreni stream, your campsite will be nearby the stream. The campsite is surrounded by a dense forest covered with  green oak, brown oak, and rhododendron trees. This campsite is also a great spot for bird-watching, you may spot Himalayan avian species like the Himalayan Woodpecker, Asian barred owlet, blue-fronted redstart, and solitary snipe.

Brown Lake Bekaltal is just an hour and a half away. The brown colour of the lake is due to a phenomenon that indicates a high concentration of dissolved organic matter, often observed in lakes surrounded by forests or wetlands.

When you start walking on the ridge, you will get a stunning glimpse of the valley below as well as Bekaltal.

The meadows along the trek are a vivid interplay of colours. Halfway through your trek, the landscape becomes resplendent with the vibrant hues of Rhododendron trees dotting the region. As the journey progresses, the majestic Oak trees take over, adding an air of serenity to the path. After approximately an hour of trekking through this picturesque forest section, youll notice the tree line gracefully receding, giving way to the vast meadows that beckon you forth.

Stepping into the meadows, a sight of unparalleled beauty unfolds before your eyes. The majestic panorama of Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti, accompanied by their associated mountain ranges, graces the horizon with their awe-inspiring presence. Natures grandeur is showcased in all its glory, leaving you mesmerized by the majestic peaks of the Himalayas. Our next campsite, Tilandi, is situated on the edge of the meadows. Trishul and you can even map the entire Roopkund Trail.

Enjoy the beautiful views from the top for some time before we make our way to Brahmatal. The mountain views from this point are unparalleled. From here, we will descend to the alpine lake, Brahmatal. The first glimpse of the lake is simply awe-inspiring. Adjacent to the lake stands a small Nag Devta Mandir, adding to the ethereal atmosphere. If the lake is not frozen, youll be treated to a clear reflection of the night sky, a sight that leaves visitors spellbound.

The Brahmatal campsite, situated at 12,250 ft, lies about 500 meters away from the lake on the left side of the slope. Dont miss the chance to witness the magical sunset from this campsite, a breathtaking moment that adds a perfect finishing touch to an unforgettable day on the trail.

Start your descent to Lohajung after a hearty breakfast, following a trail that leads directly from the Brahmatal lake. As you gradually ascend to Jhandi Top, the sparse vegetation gives way to breathtaking mountain views that play a delightful game of hide and seek with you.

From the summit of Jhandi Top, take the left trail to begin your descent towards Lohajung. As you venture onwards, the majestic mountain views will gradually recede behind you. Approximately a kilometer into the descent, the treeline embraces you once more, surrounded by lush Oak trees. Soon, youll come across a serene clearing known as Khorurai, aptly named as Khoru translates to Oak. Take a well-deserved rest here, and if you wish to extend your trek for another day, this delightful spot could serve as a possible campsite.

Another 1.3 kilometers of descent will lead you to join the main trail. Continue your journey through the enchanting Rhododendron forest before transitioning to the well-made, man-made trail. This trail serves as a vital connection between the mountain villages leading down to Lohajung.

After approximately an hour from your starting point, youll reach the Shepherd huts, known locally as chawni, where villagers and shepherds tend to their livestock. Continue on the well-laid man-made trail, following the path that connects these mountain villages to the picturesque destination of Lohajung. As you make your way through this enchanting landscape, cherish the memories of the magnificent mountains and valleys that graced your journey, adding to the magic of your unforgettable trekking adventure.

In the unlikely event that TTH cancels a trek prior to the scheduled departure date:

While it is extremely rare for TTH to cancel a trek, we understand that unforeseen circumstances or natural disasters may occasionally require us to do so before the scheduled departure. These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In the event of such a cancellation, TTH will provide you with a voucher equivalent to the amount you paid for the trek. This voucher can be redeemed for any of our treks within the next year, allowing you to still enjoy an adventure with us at a later date.

  • The issuance of a voucher is not applicable in situations where you are required to descend from the trek for any reason. The trek leader may make the decision to send you down from the trek due to factors such as insufficient fitness level, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), high blood pressure, exceeding the designated turn-around-time, health concerns, or if you are found smoking, drinking, or violating the rules set for the trek. In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the rare event that TTH shifts a trek:

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. This voucher can be redeemed at any time within one year from the date of issue. Please note that a refund fee or reimbursement of the cost difference is not applicable in these cases.

Trek to a high altitude lake in Mt Trishul's shadow

Some of our top treks are favourites because of the mountain views they offer. Think of Chaukhambha from Deoriatal Chandrashila or Bandarpoonch from Dayara Bugyal. It is difficult to find such magnified views of big mountains like these. However, Brahmatal is a trek that takes the cake. It has a view that beats all of these!

Here is why. Right on your second day, you climb out of the beautiful rhododendron and oak forest to see a white wall of the Trishul massif. And these views only come closer as you traverse the ridge towards Jhandi Top.

At Jhandi top, you are almost at the center of the mountain views. To your right rises the massive Mt Trishul and to your left stands Mt Nanda Ghunti. You even see the Ronti Saddle, the ridge that connects Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti!

That is not all. At the highest point of the Brahmatal trek, Brahmatal Top,  a new set of mountains open themselves up before you. You see Mt Neelkanth, and Mt Hathi Ghoda… while Trishul and Nanda Ghunti are to your right. Always there.

Did you know that Lohajung, the basecamp of Brahmatal, is the birthplace of Indiahikes? Click to watch the whole story.

Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti, are your companions throughout the trek. Even the highest point of this trek is approached from the side that is exposed to Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti.  This trek deserves to be talked about among treks with the best mountain views.

To top it all, Brahmatal has lovely forests, two lakes to look forward to and a meadow to traverse through.

What I Like About the Brahmatal Trek

Sandhya is a founding partner at Indiahikes. Over the past ten years, she has explored and put on the map a few of the greatest Himalayan treks in India, including Kashmir Great Lakes and Kedarkantha. She is a TedX Speaker and has been awarded the "Women of Worth" Award by Outlook Business in 2017. She believes in sustainable living just as she believes in sustainable trekking. Here’s Sandhya talking about one of the well-known treks in our country.

1 . The Rhododendron forest from Lohajung to Bekaltal

Brahmatal has mesmerising forest walks. You get to walk through the centuries-old forests of Oaks and Rhododendrons. What particularly stays with me is the  dedicated section on Rhododendrons ! Just out of Bekaltal, you get a demarcated section of Rhododendron forests.

The Rhodo forests are a treat to the eyes. The trunks twist and turn in shapes and forms. The trunks are usually bare and smooth wooded. The trees are not too tall and form a nice canopy at the top. They are close enough to form a perfect green roof over your head.

This is what you see throughout the year. If you come here during  March and April, you get a pink flowery roof . If you come here during  winters, you get a white snowy carpet

2 . The ridge meadow walk from Tilandi to Jhandi Top

On the second day, you climb out of Bekaltal trekking up through some of the most beautiful rhododendron and oak forests. As you near the top, you are curious and impatient to see what lies outside the tree line.

You enter the meadow on the mountain top and in front of you is a wall of white mountains. Having climbed all the way up to the ridge (which runs parallel to Ali Bugyal of the Roopkund trek), you see grand views of the Trishul range.

You know you are climbing to the top but the enormity of the  mountain ranges so up close  is something very special to Brahmatal.

Starting there, all the way to Jhandi top is one of the best ridges walks you will do in our mountains. On one side you have the mighty Trishul range fanning out and on the other side opens up to layers and layers of mountain ranges arranging themselves in height order going down all the way to Deval and Tharali.

These are the villages that you drove through to reach the base camp. To your right below the  Trishul, the range spreads out the entire Roopkund trek . Every landmark, every campsite, and every climb on the Roopkund trek is seen from the Brahmatal ridge. I have never stood on one trek and gone through another trek, that too perhaps the most iconic trek in its entirety like this.

3 . The Gujreni Campsite

The Gujreni campsite enclosed by forest but in grassy clearings, with commanding views of mountain tops, I think I could fall in love with these camps.

They are secluded, with plenty of space to stretch your legs, walkabout, or take a peek in the forests, yet, you can just sit in one corner taking in the views. I have done lots of treks and have loved lots of camps, but if you ask me about Brahmatal, then I think it has some of the better campsites.

Trek Trivia

Things Nobody Tells You About Brahmatal

The Arrowheads of Bekal Tal

Tale of the Bekal Naag Devta and the Pundit

brahmatal trek youtube

In the neighbouring areas of Bekal Tal, people can be seen wearing or carrying arrowheads. These are used as lockets, some are displayed in homes, and some are attached to peoples’ walking sticks among other such ornamentations. These arrowheads have a couple of stories behind them.

Uttarakhand is known as dev bhumi (divine or holy land) as Mahabharat is said to have taken place in parts of it. It is said that the arrowheads are from the days of the grand epic when they were used in battles. These arrowheads can be found stuck on trees in the forests as well today too. However, most of them have been removed and are being used by the locals.

There's also another story related to Lord Curzon linked to the arrowheads. It's often hard to verify what is fact and what isn't, but they're good stories to listen to. Make sure you ask your guide or the locals about it.

brahmatal trek youtube

There are stories of a local pundit who would come to pray to this Naag Devta regularly. Pleased with his steady devotion and service, the God once invited him down to his golden temple at the depths of the lake. The pundit is said to have seen a stunning sight. That of an underwater city of snakes, with the Naag Devta presiding over them in his temple.

The story takes a sad turn when the pundit defies the snake god. However, the myth brings forth interesting elements in the region. Not only is the Bekal Tal a sight of this myth, but the Ratgaon water source appears like the meandering body of a snake, as seen from Tilandi. Mythology tells us that Bekal Naag Devta left the lake through that route, leaving the Ratgaon water body in this snake-like figure.

Even the water from Bekal Tal is said to have seeped down along with him and appeared in the Ratgaon source.

brahmatal trek youtube

When we brought out new trails in Indian trekking, safety came with us. Back in 2012, we were the first to introduce microspikes, and two years later, pulse oximeters became standard thanks to us. Nobody does safe treks like Indiahikes. In the mountains, emergencies don't care who you're with – everyone knows that when trouble hits, you look for the yellow tents of Indiahikes.

brahmatal trek youtube

We are pioneers in trekking. Since 2007, we have brought out treks that have become India's most famous treks: Roopkund, Rupin Pass, Buran Ghati, Kedarkantha, Kashmir Great Lakes, Tarsar Marsar, Brahmatal, Phulara Ridge—the list goes on. In 2023 alone, we brought out five new treks in Indian trekking. We know treks better than anyone . This comes directly from the reason why Indiahikes was born: to bring out trek information and enable trekkers to trek on their own.

brahmatal trek youtube

More than 25,000 people trek with us every year. We are the largest trekking organisation in India. 24% of our trekkers come back to trek with us every year. Over 4,000 students from the top educational institutions trek with us every year. Aside from this, families with children choose to trek with Indiahikes knowing that our treks are the safest. We have taken over 8000 children trekking so far, and the number continues to grow.

brahmatal trek youtube

We focus on designing transformative experiences. Our trek leaders conduct thought-provoking exercises that help you reflect and contemplate. This impact stays with you for a long time. Trekkers return feeling energised, more confident, or developing abilities to deal with difficulties. Many have changed careers, rethought their core values, become more humble, shown gratitude to others, or started a new fitness journey.

brahmatal trek youtube

Since 2012, we have pioneered sustainable practices that have become standard in trekking. Using eco-bags, our trekkers have cleared over 120 tonnes of litter from the mountains. We do not carry packaged foods; instead, we serve freshly made food. We do not light campfires; we carry coal to light angethis to keep you warm. Our bio-toilets not only keep our toilets odour-free but also enrich the soil. When you trek with us, you leave mountains better.

Brahmatal Lake Trek

The Brahmatal Trek is one of the most stunning winter treks in the Garhwal Himalayas, located amidst the velvet meadows in the middle Himalayas. The landscape of the snowy peaks of the Himalayas is very mesmerizing from the lush green alpine meadows in the Brahmatal Trek. It is one of the treks in Uttarakhand that can be accessed even during the winter season. Brahmatal lake Trek is full of surprises. It is a paradise for landscape photographers, bird watchers, and Himalayan lovers. Apart from this, you also get to see places like Khopdedha campsite, Brahmatal Top, and Bekaltal Lake on this trek.

Bekaltal Lake

Bekaltal(Elevation-3004m) is a bonus lake you get in this trek. It is a bowl-shaped lake, surrounded by dense forest, and located in the middle of the Brahmatal Lake Trek.

Brahmatal Top

Brahmatal Top is the highest point of the Bramatal trek having an elevation of 3530m/11581ft. Many Himalayan peaks are visible from Brahmatal Top, like Nandaghunti, Trishul, Mrigthuni, Mount Bhanoti, Tharkot, Maiktoli, Devtoli, Hathi, Gauri, etc.

Best time to visit Brahmatal Trek

The best time for the Brahmatal Lake Trek is  Mid November to March . The best to get snow in the trek is  mid-December to mid-February . Well, you can go at any season on the Brhamatal Trek. It has a different experience in each season. for example:

Brahmatal Trek Winters

December To March. Brahmatal Trek is the best winter trek with a view of gigantic Himalayan peaks. The Brahmatal Lake and its surrounding hill areas are covered with a white sheet of snow when it snows in winters, and it seems as if we are walking through the snowy peaks of the Himalayas. If you like snow trek, then it might be the best winter trek for you.

Brahmatal Trek in Spring and Pre Monsoon

April to Mid June. In this season, green grass starts growing. Along with this, rhododendron flowers and many wild Himalayan flowers also start blooming and are unintentionally captivating. If you like to capture the green landscape with white Himalayan peaks or if you like to take photos of flora and fauna, it might be the trek for you.

Monsoon and Post Monsoon

July & August. In the Monsoon season, there are lots of rain, hailstorm, and fogs. Only those who love trekking, whether they get the best view or not, and accept the challenges can choose to attempt this trek in Monsoon.

Brahmatal Trek in Autumn

September & October. In the Autumn season, green grass dies due to frost and turns into golden brown. When sun rays fall upon these grasslands, you will be amazed by a beautiful golden landscape.

Camping at Brahmatal Lake area

Due to protests from the nearby villages, camping on the banks of the Brahmatal lake is now prohibited. The reason for this is that the tourists were polluting the water and the banks of the Brahmatal lake. A new campsite is about half a kilometer southwest of the Brahmatal lake.

Things you must keep in mind near Brahmatal Lake

  • Do not enter into the Brahmatal lake.
  • Do not clean your body parts, clothes, cooking utensils, or whatever else.
  • Do not spit on the lake.
  • Please leave your toilet far away from the lake area and cover it well with soil.

Why should you add Brahmatal trek to your bucket list?

As we already discussed that not only in winters, but it is also a good choice for other seasons except the Rainy season. The Brahmatal, Bekaltal, Brahmatal Top, Tilandi Bugyal(meadows), and mighty Himalayan peaks make this trek a versatile trek. The Brahmatal Trek has different shades in each season. So if you are a genuine trekker, you should have Brahmatal Trek on your bucket list for all seasons.

Brahmatal Trek FAQs

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma did penance on the banks of the Brahmatal lake for several years, due to which it was named Brahmatal.

Mid-January to Mid-February might be the best time to get heavy snow on the Brahmatal Trek.

During winters, the temperature range near Brahmatal Lake at night is -1°C to -5°C in November-December, March-April. It can reach from -5°C to -15°C in January-February.

Brahmatal Trek is an easy to moderate trek in other seasons and moderate to difficult in winters.

If you plan to go as a solo or self-managed group, it will be a moderate to difficult level trek in all seasons. It is because, after Mundoli, you will not get any village or food facilities. There are some shepherds in Tilandi Bugyal and Brahmatal Bugyal in pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. There is no guarantee they provide food due to having limited resources. So, you have to carry tents, sleeping bags, and food on your own.

In winter, there are many trek organizers available for the Brahmatal Trek. You can arrange your needs with only local organizers. Also, you will get some temporary hotels on the trek. The locations of hotels are Mundoli village, Khopdedha (Bekaltal Campsite), and Jhandi Top. Brahmatal is 3 km away from Jhandi Top. You can camp here and go to Brahmatal Lake and come back. But there is no water source near Jhandi Top. Therefore you need to carry water along with you.

No, it is a freshwater lake. A small water stream emerges from one side above the lake and passes through the opposite side of the lake.

Usually, It is a four days trek. But if you are an experienced trekker, you can complete this trek in 2-4 days.

At Lohajung, you will get mobile signals but not so good in strength. During the trek, there are only a few places like Mundoli Village, Tilandi Bugyal Jhandi Top, Brahmatal Top, where you can get the signals but very poor. The mobile operators you will get there are- BSNL, Jio, VI, and Airtel.

The Trekking distance is about 28 km covering Brahmatal Top and following the same route to return. If you chose Daldum/ Dolidhar as returning path, it is around 22 km trekking distance.

There is a small ancient temple of the deity Bhekal Nag, located east side of the lake. Due to this, it is called Bhekaltal or Bekaltal.

The Bekaltal lake is about 6.5 km distance from Lohajung.

Brahmatal is 6 km away from the Bekaltal.

No, but few might be affected by AMS. The itinerary for the Brahmatal Trek is prepared in such a manner that Acute Mountain Sickness will not bother you. A minor problem may occur only.

AMS may occur when you travel more than 2500 m altitude. Our body takes 2-3 days to adapt to higher altitude changes. You should not hike more than 900 meters in a day after 2500 m altitude.

The only trek that takes you to an  Alpine Lake .

About Brahmatal Trek

You’ve already climbed to roughly  12,000 feet,  Brahmatal. The scenery is breathtaking. A shrine is near the lake, and a lone tree stands on the far bank. The lake is in a crater, and the waters are extremely clean. And just beyond the margin of the lake, you can see  Mt Trishul and Mt   Nandaghunti , two of our country’s most gorgeous mountains.

Trekking  to an  alpine lake  is one of the highlights of a  Himalayan trek . The winter Brahmatal walk, on the other hand, not only takes you to an alpine lake but also allows you to camp close to it. The  Brahmatal trip is unique  in that it allows you to trek to such a lake in the winter.

brahmtal trek

What Is The Most Convenient Way To Get To The Brahmatal?

Lohajung  may be reached in  two ways . One is a lengthier ( 259.2 km ) journey from Rishikesh, while the other is around 40 miles shorter and departs from Kathgodam Railway station (222 km).

Temperatures in the Brahmatal hike.

The temperature swings from 3-10 degrees Celsius during the day. The nights are bitterly cold, with temperatures as  low as -5 degrees Celsius . Because of the steep slopes and slick terrain, the Brahmatal Trek is not recommended during the monsoon months of  July and August , as it is exceedingly difficult to ascend with the rain pouring down.

Brahmatal Trek’s Difficulty

Brahmatal trek difficulty level varies from easy to moderate when it comes to  beginners , this journey is well-known. If you’re looking to try a winter  Himalayan trip  for the first time, the Brahmatal trek is the way to go. It is organically crafted in such a way that even a novice in the Himalayas will never get l ost.

brahmtal trek

Here are some crucial safety recommendations for the Brahmatal trek :

Wear your microspikes when climbing to the peak amid the deep snow. In hard snow, slips are fairly common. A slight slip can result in a ligament rupture, a sprained ankle, or even a fracture. Always walk on the footholds left by previous hikers. Deep footholds should be avoided if at all possible. Do not try to make your own way.

Required Documents for the Brahmatal Trek

Bring both an original and a photocopy of your official  picture ID card . A  driver’s license , an  Aadhar card , or a passport.

You will need to  summit your identification  to the forest department. You will  not be permitted  to trek without these.

Tip: To keep vital documents dry, place them in a clear plastic cover and slide them into the inner compartment at the back of your backpack.

Things to carry for Brahmatal Trek?

One head torch is required. Water  bottle/hydration  pack: Two one-liter bottles are recommended. Hydration pack: Those who need it should bring one hydration pack and a one-liter bottle. Consult your doctor and maintain  ORS  in your personal  medical kit .

brahmatal trek youtube

Brief Description

Resting in the depths of the Uttarakhand Himalayas, the Brahmatal trek treats you to soaring views of some lofty mountain peaks such as Mt. Trishul, Mt Nanda Ghunti and Mt. Khamet. At an altitude of 3800 m, the Brahmatal trek is open throughout the winters when most of the other trekking routes are closed making it a perfect winter trek for beginners.

Brahmatal hosts one of the loveliest forest walks that are home to diverse bird species and century old oak trees. During spring, the trails of these forests are carpeted in the red and pink blooms of rhododendrons. In winters, the landscape transforms dramatically sheathing the region in pristine white snow, making it nothing short of a Winter wonderland.

Long, never-ending ridgelines, expansive meadows, and 360-degree views of colossal peaks from the summit are some of the other attractions of the Brahmatal Trek. Read more about the Highlights of the Trek here .

Spanning over 28 km, the Brahmatal trek begins from the base village of Lohajung located in the Chamoli district in Garhwal Himalayas. The 6 km trek from Lohajung to the Gujreni campsite runs through dense forests of Conifer, Cedar, Oak and Fir. The Gujreni campsite is at the heart of a beautiful clearing surrounded by Oak and Rhododendrons with panoramic views of snow-capped ranges.

The next day, the trek gradient increases gradually. A 2-hour trek will lead you to the Bekaltal lake, frozen during the winter months, making up for a tranquil view.

The trail heading out of the lake continues to remain dominated by Oak and Rhododendron forests. You start catching glimpses of Mt Trishul through the woods from here on. The forest soon opens up to an expansive meadow, Talindi Top, that rewards you with spectacular views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti amongst others. The ascent continues beyond this point until you reach Jhandi Top which surpasses the views offered by Talindi Top. It is a 1.5 km descent from here onwards to the Brahmatal campsite. The campsite is delightfully set at one end of a ridge, opening up to a stunning view of the blue silhouette of mountain ranges stacked layer after layer at the horizon. The Brahmatal lake is only 500 M from the campsite. According to legend, the lake is believed to be the place where Lord Brahma meditated ages ago.

The trek to the summit begins the next day and is nothing short of thrilling. The trail climbs through moderately inclined dense forests eventually translating into a ridge stretch that opens up to gaping views of the tremendous valley behind. The summit offers awe-inspiring vistas of some well-known Himalayan ranges like Mount Trishul, sacred Mount Nanda Ghunti, Mount Chaukhamba, Mount Neelkanth, Mount Kamet and Mount Hathi Ghoda.

While the trail is relatively easy to navigate, the ascent to Brahmatal Top can be challenging during heavy snowfall season. The snow, during these times can run knee deep requiring some effort during ascent and descent. Read more about the challenges of the Brahmatal Trek along with the gear and skills needed to complete the trek here .

Brief Itinerary

Detailed itinerary.

Arrive at Lohajung (2331 M)

Distance: 294 kms (Dehradun to Lohajung)

Duration:   11-12 hours

We begin our journey to Lohajung from ISBT Dehradun latest by 7 AM. It is located at a distance of 294 km from Dehradun and would take about 11-12 hours to cover. The landscapes throughout this drive are striking.

The journey begins with a drive uphill that will take you through the Kumaon region into the Himalayan Belt of Garhwal. The roads here are extensive and the Shivalik ranges can be spotted at the horizon. The setting is tranquil and the Ganga river accompanies you swiftly throughout this stretch.

It gets exciting after this. We will be passing through three of the five iconic confluences of the Alaknanda river (Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag) on the way to Lohajung.

A beautiful showcase of tradition, Devprayag, is the first confluence we will be passing by. It is the converging point of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers. You can clearly see the turquoise of one merging with the teal of the other in the valley below.

40 kms from this point, we reach the historic town of Srinagar on the banks of Alaknanda. The Rudraprayag lies further ahead from here.  It is the confluence of the Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers.

About 33 km from Rudraprayag is the third confluence of Karnapraya, the meeting point of the Alaknanda and the Pindari River. Each confluence is unique in its setting and is a delight to behold!

Lohajung, located in the Chamoli district of the Garhwal Himalayas, is 86 km from Karnaprayag. Expect to reach Lohajung by late evening around 8-9pm.

Lohajung (2331 M) to Gujreni/Lower Bekaltal (2750 M)

Distance: 6 kms

Duration: 4-5 hours

We begin from Lohajung at 9 AM. Packed lunches will be provided for the day. The trek starts on a well-paved stone trail that heads into the forest. The Nanda Ghunti Peak can be spotted right from the beginning of the trek.

After a short walk through the woods, you will come across Mandoli village tucked in to the colossal mountain ranges on your left. The trail ascends gradually in long, serpentine curves from here. Higher up, you will be able to spot the Kali Valley which is the confluence of the Kali and Pindari rivers.

Beyond this point, the trail mostly runs through dense forests of conifer, Cedar, Oak and Fir allowing little sunlight in. There are also Rhododendrons in this region. They bloom during late winter and early spring season and cover the trail in pretty colors of orange and red. During the winter months, these paths are covered with pristine white snow and no flower blossoms.

The next landmark from here is a 10 m wooden bridge running over a stream where you can refill your bottles. Crossing the bridge, you will reach Begum that makes for an excellent resting point overlooking the expansive Navali and Bagdi Bugyals.

At a 20 minute hike from here, you will come across two streams. The second stream which is the Gujreni stream will eventually lead you to a beautiful clearing set in the backdrop of lush forests. This is the campsite for the day.

This region carries a woody scent and is surrounded by umber-brown Oak and Rhododendron forests. After setting up the camps, try spotting some of the birds around like Himalayan Woodpecker, Asian Barred Owlet and Blue-fronted Redstart amongst others. You will encounter snow from late December till Early March at this campsite dropping the temperature considerably.

Rejoice in the seclusion and silence of the campsite for it offers an opportunity to look inwards as much as outwards.

Trek from Gujreni/Lower Bekaltal (2750 m) to Brahmatal (3400 M)

Distance: 5 kms

The trail from the Gujreni Campsite enters a thicket of forests with a moderate ascent throughout. You will catch the first glimpse of Mt. Trishul through the towering trees here. At a 2 hour hike away, lays the Bekaltal lake lined with Oak trees all around.

The color of the water is mud-brown indicating a high amount of dissolved organic matter. During the peak winter months, the lake is likely to be frozen. You can spend some time here immersing in the profound silence of this setting.

The trail dives straight into dense Oak and Rhododendron forests with a steep incline for the next hour. As you walk higher, you will see an idyllic view of the Bekaltal Lake retreating slowly below. The canopy of the forests is almost impenetrable, keeping most of the sunlight out. This allows patches of snow to sustain on the trails even in early spring season.

After an hour or so, the forest opens up to a spectacular meadow, called Talindi Top which offers some phenomenal views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti. 1 km from here is the Jhandi top that sets a stunning vantage point surpassing the views offered earlier at Talindi Top. With the skies wide open and several layers of jewel-blue mountains decked one over the other, the spectacle is absolutely surreal to behold.

Jhandi Top marks the highest point on the ridge. The trail begins to descend beyond this point. The Brahmatal campsite is only 1.5 km of a downhill trek on the ridge from here.

After you reach the campsite, you can visit the Brahmatal Lake which is only 500m from the campsite. The Brahmatal lake is believed to be the place where Lord Brahma meditated long ago. This lake is completely frozen during winter season and is a marvel to behold.

One can go out and explore the beautiful photography options available at this place. Be prepared for subzero temperatures that could fall even below -7 degree Celsius during peak winter nights.

Brahmatal (3400 M) to Brahmatal Top (3846 M) to Brahmatal

Duration: 4 hours

The trek starts early around 6AM after having a light breakfast at the campsite. This day of the trek is the most fascinating visually and the terrain is relatively easy to negotiate. There is also the added advantage of leaving the backpacks behind at the campsite since we will be returning here for the night.

During the winter season, your trek leader will provide you with microspikes and gaiters depending upon the snow conditions.

20 minutes into the trek, you will come across the Brahmatal lake tucked into the middle of a lush clearing. The trail till the Brahmatal lake is a steep incline climbing steadily through open grasslands. In the winter season, this area is usually covered in a sheath of white snow making it no less than a Winter Wonderland while the lake glistens under the morning sunshine.

Beyond the lake, the trail ascends moderately and envelopes into a ridge. You will notice the Brahmatal lake retiring in the valley below as you steadily gain altitude. The first ridge is a stretch of gentle ascent that leads you to the final ridge climb.

The final ridge eventually opens up tp a breath-taking spectacle of snow-capped mountain ranges standing so close to you that you feel like you are watching them on a theatre screen. Try spotting Mt. Trishul, Mt. Nanda Ghunti, Mt. Chaukhamba, Mt. Neelkanth, Mt. Kamet and Mt. Hathi Ghoda amongst the ranges.

Although Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti accompany you throughout the trek, the close-up view from the summit is still thrilling to behold. Spend some time at the top immersing in the experience before heading back to the campsite.

Brahmatal (3400 M) to Lohajung (2331 M)

Distance: 11 kms

Duration: 7-8 hours

After having a scrumptious breakfast, we begin the descent back to Lohajung at 8 AM following the same route as the ascent. Be prepared for a long day of trekking.

The trail runs through thick Oak and Rhododendron forests. Eventually, you will come across little Shepherds huts which the locals use to keep their livestock. Following the man-made stone trail beyond that point, you will be descending to the mountain villages leading to Lohajung.

Expect to reach Lohajung in about 7-8 hours. You can then explore the slow and peaceful life at the village and learn about the various legends around the area. Do not miss the sunset in the evening. The orange rays brushing the Mt. Nanda Ghunti peak gently is lovely to watch. This is followed by a piping hot dinner at the guest house.

Departure from Lohajung (2331 M)

Distance: 294 kms

Duration: 11-12 hours

After morning tea, we will be starting for Dehradun early at 6-7 AM. The journey will once again take you through the three confluences of Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag and Devprayag. Expect to reach ISBT Dehradun by 6-7 PM.

In case, you plan on traveling back to Delhi the same night, consider booking a bus that starts at around 10-12 PM to account for any delays we might encounter on the way.

Small Group Size

Our batch sizes are capped at 15 for smaller treks with the trek leader and trekker ratio of 1:8. This ratio, in our years of experience, has proven to deliver the best trekking experience for individuals as well as groups. Capping the size of the group ensures individual attention to each trekker so that no signs of distress or need during the trek go unnoticed. It also helps to form a more cohesive cohort with better group energy which helps define the rhythm and pace of days on the trek. As you go higher up on the BRS scale, since the stakes are higher, expeditions have an even smaller group size with the ratio of expedition leader to climber set at 1:2.

A trek that has captured the hearts of beginner trekkers & winter trekking enthusiasts is the supremely beautiful Brahmatal Trek in Uttarakhand. Set amidst the Trishul range in Uttarakhand, the Brahmatal trek is a winter wonderland with magnificent close-up views of giant mountains surrounding the trail.

The breathtaking Brahmatal Lake!

Nestled in the deep heart of Uttarakhand is the gorgeous and extremely picturesque Brahmatal lake that can only be accessed through the Brahmatal trek. While the lake isn’t huge, it sits in the midst of a snow-carpeted meadow open on all sides with just one lone tree keeping it company. The lake is frozen through most seasons and is crystal clear when not iced up. While the lake is not directly on the trail, one would need to hike a little to come across this beauty. This is also close to one of the campsites on the trek. The lake remains unfrozen in spring and all through autumn and is good months to see the icy blue waters of the lake. Brahmatal is a name that is derived from Lord Brahma. The mythology mentions that Lord Brahma used to meditate on the Brahmatal lake. The lake is situated at an altitude of 3,400 m above sea level.

The Views from Brahmatal!

One of the many reasons we love the Brahmatal trek is because of the views of the giant mountains you find along the trail. While treks like Kedarkantha, Gorson Bugyal, Pangarchulla etc. give you great views of the Garhwal mountains, nothing comes close to what you see on the Brahmatal trail. While the Brahmatal trek starts from the Rhododendron forests, once you finish this climb, it opens up to a gigantic view of the wall of Mt. Trishul Massif (7,120 m/23,359 ft) that resembles a trident. Trust us when we say, you will be awestruck at the first glimpse. The views will get even bigger as you climb further up and you will also get a chance to see Mt. Nanda Ghunti (6309 m/20,698 ft). As you reach Brahmatal Top, you’ll also get up close to Mt. Neelkanth (6596 m/21,640 ft), and Mt. Hathi Ghoda (6729 m/22,070 ft). These views will definitely leave you wondering how minuscule we are amidst these giants.

The perfect winter trek!

Brahmatal trek best time to visit is the winter season. If you have an everlasting love for snow and winters, then this is one trek you must do. Considered to be one of the most popular winter treks in India, Brahmatal is a great trail for Nomads who are new to Himalayan trekking. This trek takes you through two Rhododendron and Oak forests, introduces you to two lakes – Brahmatal and Bekaltal Lakes shows off a gorgeous snow-carpeted meadow, and has campsites that look like a scene right out of Frozen! In peak winters the entire trail gets drenched in snow and you get to spend and camp for five days in a snowy wonderland. Brahmatal trek temperature in winter may range from -8°C to 5°C.

Great beginner trek with a Summit!

The Brahmatal trek covers the highest altitude of 3,733 m (12,250 ft) which is Brahmatal top. The overall brahmatal trek distance is of 30 Km which takes five days to complete. Brahmatal trek difficulty level is moderate. As the trek takes you through forests for most of the trail, the chances of getting Altitude Mountain Sickness is lesser here. The gradient of this trek is moderate which means that the climb is less steep as compared to Kedarkantha, however, the trek distance on each day will be longer. In the winters, you can expect to trek in knee-deep snow and experience snowfall every now and then. While you may require microspikes during the trek, there is no technical climb in this trek. While this is a beginner Himalayan trek, it is always recommended that you be physically fit when it comes to high-altitude treks.

The trail is well laid out and as you go higher up, you will start seeing the Kali Valley where the rivers Kali and Pindari meet. You need to keep trekking from here and after a certain point, when you reach approx 2,590 m (8,500 ft), you will come across a beautiful wooden bridge of about 10 meters right above a stream. You can stop to fill up your bottles at this stream. When you cross the bridge and trek a little further, you will reach Begum a resting point with views of the magical meadows seen in the distance. As you start trekking again you come across two more streams, the last one being Gujrani Stream. It takes about an hour from Gujrani Stream to reach the beautiful Bekaltal campsite. This last distance takes you through an Oak forest which is a moderate climb. As you reach Bekaltal you will start seeing views of the giant Mt. Trishul on the horizon.

Bekaltal is your campsite for the day and a 10-minute hike from Bekaltal will take you to the Bekaltal lake while lies amidst Oak trees. The water of this lake is brown unlike that of Brahmatal lake. In winters you will notice a thin sheet of ice formed over the lake. You will notice how quickly time flies when you sit by the Bekaltal lake and just reminisce your journey through the day.

Dinner will be served in the main tent post which you can go to sleep in your allotted tents.

Day 4: Brahmatal

  • Altitude:  9,689 ft (2,953 m) to 10,440 ft (3,182 m)
  • Trek Duration & Distance Covered:  5-6 hours, 7 km
  • Gradient:  Moderate with a steep climb + gradual ascent and descent towards Brahmatal

On day 4 you start your day early with a scrumptious breakfast at the Bekaltal campsite. Post this, you start packing the essentials for the day. Once everyone is ready you start trekking towards the next stop which is the Brahmatal Campsite. The climb will take you through Oak and Rhododendron trees and then a winding ascending trail as you make your way to the next campsite. If you start early enough you can get good sights of the mountains around before the clouds set in. If the skies are clear, you'll have breathtaking views of the mountains all through the trail with views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti specifically. You will constantly gain and drop height as you traverse through the trail today. You will sometimes walk right beside the treeline and sometimes right above it. The treeline will mostly have Rhododendron or Oak trees. You start ascending steep when you climb towards Jhandi Top which becomes the highest point of the ridge.  You can see the mountains in a panorama here and the Roopkund trail is visible from here as well.

The view at Jhandi Top will leave you awestruck. You spend some time here before you start your descent towards Brahmatal which is about 1.5 km from Jhandi Top.

You can unwind at the campsite and relax for the day.

Day 5:   Brahmatal Top

  • Altitude:  10,440 ft (3,182 m) to 12,250 ft (3,734 m) and on to 9,640 ft (2,938 m)
  • Trek Duration & Distance Covered:   8 hours, 7.5 km
  • Trek gradient:  Moderate

Day 5 is your summit day so you start trekking early post your breakfast. The brahmatal trek height is of 12,250 ft (3,734 m). From the campsite, it takes about 15 minutes to reach the Brahmatal Lake which is the first stop along the trail to the summit. The lake sits right in the midst of a meadow and the trail leading up to the lake is a gradual ascent. The lake in winters remain frozen and when visited in spring and autumn shows off it's crystal clear beautiful blue waters. The break at the lake also presents a good photo opportunity while we discourage and do not allow nomads to walk on the lake at any given point in time. The lake is accompanied by a lone tree that has snow all over during winters.

The next step to keep trekking until you find a ridge and from here you get a good view of the entire lake. Again, a great photo opportunity. The first ridge climb is a gentle ascent leading up to the final ridge to the summit. The ridge then opens up to the marvelous views of the mountains you saw at Jhandi Top. This is where you will be resting for lunch. After a 20 minute break you start trekking again but this time it's a descent with mountains to your right and the entire valley to your left. You will now come across closer views of Mt. Trishul, Mt. Nanda Ghunti, and 180 degree views of the entire mountain range with Chaukambha, Mt. Neelkanth, Mt. Mandi, Mt. Nilgiri and many more peaks. This is Brahmatal Top. This is the highest brahmatal trek altitude of 12,250 ft (3,734 m).

Your campsite for the night Daldum is about 3 hours from the Brahmatal Top and you start descending into a forest after spending some time at Brahmatal Top.

Your tents will be ready to welcome you upon reaching Daldum. You will stay the night here and relax after the long trek.

Day 6:   Lohajung

  • Trek Duration & Distance: 4 hours, 2-3 Km
  • Gradient: Easy

Day 6 begins with a good hearty breakfast post which you pack your things up and get ready to trek back to Lohajung. This descend is again through a forest and the trees will define leave you energized for the climb down. Once you cross the forest you will reach Malling. This is where the forest ends and it takes about 30-40 minutes to reach Malling from your Daldum campsite.

From here getting back to Lohajung is easy. You'll find houses on the slopes and then trail made of stones which is frequented by visitors. This trail will lead you to Lohajung directly. Upon reaching Lohajung you will check into your hotel and rest there for the day.

Day 7: Rishikesh

  • Altitude:  6,170 ft (1880 m)
  • T ravel Duration: 7-8 hours

On day 7 you start travelling from Lohajung to Rishikesh. You can expect to arrive Rishikesh late in the afternoon. Check in to your hotel and rest for the day.

↬ description.

Brahmatal journey (pronounce “Brahma Tal”) is one of the most beautiful treks in the world, and there are comparable paths in the Himalayas, but at a much greater altitude. The Brahma Tal trip is a simple winter hike that has about everything you might want from a winter hiking location. The Brahmatal walk is quickly gaining popularity because to its breathtaking scenery. This walk has a lot going for it, including seemingly endless ridge lines, expansive and pleasant alpine meadows/Bugyal, high altitude lakes, and vistas of beautiful peaks. You’ll want to put the Brahmatal winter trek on your itinerary for more than just the stunning landscapes you’ll see. Brahmatal is a medium-sized lake hidden behind the ridge (coordinates: 30.176878°E, 79.589449°N), and it can be found only by descending from the peak. Lord Brahma, according to myth, did some soul-searching here beside the lake. Bekhal Tal, the second lake on the route, is similarly concealed by the surrounding woodland. Many of you may easily miss it, therefore your guide will likely point it out to you. Both lakes are about the size of a standard one, given that they are so far up. From the route’s highest points, you have a breathtaking view of the High Himalayan ranges stretching from east to west. The peaks of Mrigthuni, Devtoli, and Maikoti in Kumaon may be seen on the right as you go north-east. The Trisul mountain and the enormous Nanda Ghunti to the north are spectacular. Nandaghunti and the Bethartoli Himal. The towering peaks of Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Mana, Kamet, Hathi, and Ghoda may be seen to the west and left. Views of Ali Bugyal, Bedni Bugyal, Roopkund, Junargali, and the distant Ronty saddle, among others, can be seen from this ridge, which is directly opposite the more well-known Roopkund trek.

↬ Itinerary

Day 1- From Rishikesh to Lohajung driving

Pickup will take place at Rishikesh in the morning, and the journey to Lohajung ( 2320 m/7600 ft) is around 220 km long. It’s possible that the trip will take roughly 10 hours, including breaks. The route travels through the Kumaon area and, for the most part, follows the vast valleys that are found in the Shivalik Himalaya. Along the way, we pass through Almora and Kausani. The route progressively winds its way through the conifer forest and reaches the Garhwal administrative area after passing through Gwaldam. The road is named after the Garhwal administrative region. A significant amount of elevation is gained over the last leg of the trek from Deval to Lohajung. In addition to a handful of private hotels, Lohajung is home to a GMVN tourist lodge and a Tourist Rest House. Connectivity is available from all of the main mobile networks here. The view of the sunset from Lohajung absolutely warrants a separate remark. The Nandaghunti massif’s warm hues may likely leave you unable to find words to describe them. the accommodations for the night at the Tourist Rest House or Lodge.

Day 2- From Lohajung to Bekhal tal/Khopdalia trek

Today is the first day of our walk. Starting right next to Lohajung, we make our way slowly up the ridge, which has a modest incline, and continue doing so as we go around the mountain. When we pause and turn around to look behind us along the trail, we are treated to a breathtaking panorama of Didna village and Nandaghunti mountain. In contrast, interesting ridge line formations and the settlement of Mandoli in the foreground capture our attention. The majority of the trek takes place among the thicket of conifer, cedar, oak and fir trees.

Over the course of about an hour, we make a slow ascent up the ridge. From this point, we make our way along a ravine that is covered by a thick growth of vegetation. There is very little sunlight that makes its way in here, and it is quite likely that snow will fall here, if it has not already. After travelling for a bit, we eventually make a turn to the left and come to an area that is good for camping. Khopdalia is the name of this beautiful camping area that is around 2950 metres or 9670 feet in elevation. The whole distance is 6 km, and the time required might be either four or five hours. We set up our tents for the night. Bekhal tal may be reached in only ten minutes from here. You are welcome to see the area with your guide in the afternoon.

Day 3: From Bekhal tal/Khopdalia trek to Brahma Tal

Today, after breakfast, we go out on the main route from the campground and make our way back into the canopy of the forest. The rhododendrons and conifers that make up the woodland are diverse. During the spring, the woods are filled with pink and red flowers. We will arrive at Bekhal Tal (about 3000 metres or 9840 feet) in the next ten minutes. This lake is around the size of a rectangle, and it features a modest temple perched on one of its edges. In a typical year, the temperature drops below freezing in December and stays that way until March. From this vantage point, we have to ascend the ridge, which is a moderately steep ascent that takes around one hour and a half. The walk through the forest continues with just brief rest stops interspersed throughout.  After finishing this ascent, we arrive at the edge of the high altitude meadow known as the “Bugyal” in the Himalayas. During the winter months, Himalayan Monals make their home at this forest edge. From this point on, the view to our right, which is the north-east side, will open out to provide an expansive vista. Peaks of Kumaon like Maiktoli, Devtoli to Mrigthuni, Trishul and Nanda Ghunti, one by one. As we make our way along the ridge, we are treated to one of the most alluring vistas in all of Garhwal. After a fantastic stroll lasting almost an hour, we leave the ridge and descend on the left slope to reach the lake Brahma Tal, which is approximately 3,250 metres (10,660 feet) in elevation and is surrounded by the slopes of the surrounding mountains. This lake is around the size of a medium longitudinal lake, and on this elevation there are just a few trees still standing. The lake is difficult to notice from a distance, but one must approach near enough to catch a glimpse of the dark turquoise water. We found a nice spot near Brahma Tal to pitch our tent and slept there for the night. The distance is 6 km, and travelling it might take between 4 and 5 hours. We set up our tents for the night.

Day 4: From Brahma Tal to Khamila trek and back

Today we are going to make an effort to climb to the top of the peak that is located to our north-west. The highest point of the ridge that we traversed the day before in order to get to the camping spot at Brahma Tal is literally right here where we are standing. The ascent to the top of the ridge should take between three and four hours at a leisurely pace. If you want to reach the peak by 10 in the morning, you need to have an early start—between 6 and 6:30 in the morning. There are two summits, with the western one being the taller of the two (Khamila Top, which is also known as Jatropani at 4000 m/13120 ft), and the eastern one being a few hundred feet lower. At the beginning of the hike, we make our way through the meadow and up the ridge towards the peak. As we make our way closer to the summit, the peaks that extend westward to Nanda Ghunti become increasingly visible from this route. The last portion of the trail up to the peak is littered with boulders. The view from the summit is a genuine panorama that encompasses more than 180 degrees.  From this vantage point, you will be able to view the mountains that surround the Badrinath valley. These mountains go from west to east and include Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Hati Ghoda, Ronty, Trishul, Mrigthuni, Bethartoli Himal, and Maiktoli and Devtoli. After waiting for half an hour, we make our way back to our tent at Brahma Tal and set up. You will have a view that encompasses the whole valley below as well as the camping area. The whole distance is 8 km, and it may take between six and seven hours to complete.

Day 5: From Brahmatal to Lohajung Trek

We turn around and go back the way we came yesterday and descend to Lohajung. If you didn’t have a chance to see the panorama while you were reaching, you now have another opportunity. This should take between six and seven hours. If you have the time and inclination in the evening, you should make an effort to watch the sunset on the side of the valley towards Deval or Gwaldam. From the Lohajung bazaar, walk downhill for ten minutes until you reach any bend that works. The variety of hues that may be seen in the sky will undoubtedly astonish you. Lodge rooms available for rent.

Day 6: From Lohajung to Rishikesh drive

We will depart for Rishikesh today. We continue on the same path until we reach Tharali, at which point we make a sharp right turn and go towards Karnaprayag, following the blue Pindar river. We follow the Alaknanda river from Karnaprayag all the way to Rudraprayag, where it joins up with another tributary called the Mandakini. The holy river Ganga is formed by the confluence of two major rivers, the Alaknanda and the Bhagirathi, which are located in the valley at Devprayag. From here, Rishikesh may be reached in a further two hours. We have completed our trip now that we have arrived at rishikesh. Trip ends here.
