Coronavirus (COVID-19) information for the transport industry

Coronavirus-related information about VicRoads services, public transport, active transports, taxi and ride-share, ports and freight services and the construction industry.

On this page

Vicroads services, public transport advice, changes to buses, walking and cycling, taxi and ride-share vehicles, ports and freight, construction industry.

Visit Coronavirus Victoria (opens in a new window) for the latest information.

Many high-volume and priority VicRoads transactions can be completed over the phone or online .

Please visit the VicRoads website for the latest information .

Public transport services are running to a normal timetable, including all Night Network services.

We strongly urge you to register your myki so that the Department of Transport and Planning can contact you if you have been exposed to coronavirus (COVID-19) on a public transport service. It's quick and easy to register your myki now (opens in a new window) . PTV handles passenger information in line with the appropriate privacy standards and in line with the current State of Emergency Declaration. Should you require further information, please email [email protected] .

We have plenty of cashless ways to top up your myki online (opens in a new window) or at your nearest station or stop. Cash is being accepted at PTV hubs and station ticket offices. Buses that use myki will remain cashless - please check your balance and top up your myki before you travel.

Plan ahead by using PTV journey planner (opens in a new window) and checking disruptions information (opens in a new window) for timetable and service changes.

Download the PTV mobile app (opens in a new window) or contact the public transport call centre (opens in a new window) on 1800 800 007.

Bus journeys will be made safer for drivers and passengers who have to travel, with the introduction of all-door boarding over the next 18 months.

This means that passengers can enter from any door, just like on trams, helping to maintain distance from others and reduce wait times at bus stops.

To support all-door boarding, cash transactions on buses are no longer possible.

All passengers are required to travel with a valid myki.

Before you travel, you can check your myki at a machine or online to make sure you’re topped up and ready to go (opens in a new window) .

There's never been a better time to choose to walk or cycle for shorter trips.

We're rolling out 100 km of new and improved cycling routes across key inner-city suburbs to make it easier and safer for people to cycle to and from the CBD.

Walking routes and journey time information are available on the PTV app.

When you are travelling in a taxi or ride-share service, please sit in the back seat, and wash or sanitise your hands before and after getting in the vehicle.

QR codes are no longer required in taxis or ride-share vehicles.

There is no limit on the number of passengers, but booking service providers may choose to implement their own passenger limits. Please check with your preferred booking service provider to determine if they have introduced any limits or additional safety measures.

Drivers must clean with an approved disinfectant (opens in a new window) , surfaces of the vehicle which are likely to have been touched, in the following circumstances:

Drivers must record this information whenever they clean the vehicle. You can find out more about what’s required by drivers and booking service providers by visiting Safe Transport Victoria (formally Commercial Passengers Vehicle Victoria) webpage (opens in a new window) .

An approved hand sanitiser must also be available to passengers for every trip that starts in Victoria. Drivers should also set the air-conditioning to external airflow instead of re-circulation and make hand sanitiser available for passengers.

We’re investing $22 million to support the commercial passenger vehicle industry during the coronavirus pandemic and ensure it remains a viable option for all Victorians, now and into the future. Further information for the commercial passenger vehicle industry and customers can be found at Safe Transport Victoria (opens in a new window) .

The Victorian Government is keeping supply chains moving and supermarket shelves well stocked, while minimising impacts on local residents.

As part of the return to COVID normal settings, the Government is introducing a revised planning deliveries exemption. From late October 2022, the revised exemption will allow deliveries of essential goods to premises one hour before and one hour after the times specified in any planning permit condition across Victoria.

This measure is being introduced on a trial basis. It will be reviewed over the next 18-24 months, with input from industry and local government stakeholders.

This measure allows flexibility for the delivery of essential goods, while upholding the Government’s long-standing commitment to protect community amenities.

Existing truck curfews in curfew areas were reinstated in August 2022. The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator is continuing to track and enforce compliance in curfew areas.

In areas directly or indirectly impacted by flooding in regional Victoria, we will be asking Councils to take a common-sense approach to the enforcement of delivery curfews as the revised provisions come into effect.

Deliveries of essential goods will continue to be prioritised and supported as part of the emergency response.

Should you have further enquiries regarding freight and logistics, please email [email protected] .

Free online course: COVID-19 Safe Practices for Freight and Delivery Drivers

We’ve developed a short online course on COVIDSafe practices for truck and delivery drivers to help industry understand Victorian Government standards when entering and travelling around the state.

The course gives drivers some practical tips about hygiene, sanitisation, and distancing to keep them safe and reassure customers in this challenging environment.

It also includes information about rest stops, planning routes and border closures.
