I am a corporate event planner who had to book two private shuttles for my group for multiple stops and pick-ups. Green Dream Tours was amazing from start to finish. They were reliable, professional and timely! They were also priced well and reasonably without compromising their service. Their drivers were awesome and their buses beautiful. BOOK THEM, you can't go wrong!!

What an amazing day we had with Green Dream Tours! Everything from the logistics of coordinating the tastings and lunch and transportation, to staying on budget, was taken care of for over 50 people. The transportation was super comfortable, the driver was safe and courteous, and our guide Nicole rocked! It is nice when an organization is so professional to work with and accommodating. Already planning another event for next year!

Erin and Heather were wonderfully communicative and super accommodating to our unique team request. We wanted a partner to plan and lead our group on a full-day tour of the wine country, visit/taste wines, organize lunch, and all transportation and logistics. They did all this and more. Alberto, our guide, was knowledgeable, fun and flexible. I would definitely recommend Green Dream Tours and use them again!

5 of the Best Napa Valley Wine Tours from San Francisco

Take a bus, take a limo, take a trip in style to some of the best wineries in California on one of these five great Napa Valley and Sonoma wine country tours from San Francisco.

The film ‘Sideways’ may have propelled pinot noir wines to film-fan stardom, but the wine regions of Napa Valley and Sonoma have so much more to offer. Learn to distinguish your Riesling from your Chardonnay; your Syrah from your Cabernet Sauvignon at a wine tasting on a cheap tour. Or, if you’re already well aware of those delineations, simply explore the USA’s premier wine region and discover new local wines right at their source. Here are five of the best wine tours, all from San Francisco, to try today.

Half-Day Wine Country Excursion from San Francisco

Among the best value Napa Valley and Sonoma tours is this five-hour trip from San Francisco, taking time to stop at two wineries where you’ll be able to enjoy up to five wine tastings. The itinerary also includes time to take a wine estate tour, where you’ll learn the inner workings of the production process and see the vine-clad slopes where future bottles get their start. This tour departs on most days of the year. From $99 per person.

Small-Group Sonoma Wine Tour with Tastings

Sonoma’s wineries are not quite as globally recognized as those of neighboring Napa Valley, but that essentially means the area is less touristy. This tour visits three boutique wineries in the region, offering a wine tasting at each. Groups are limited to 13 people and there is live commentary on board the air-conditioned van as you travel through the city and countryside, with an additional photo stop at Golden Gate Bridge. Lunch is not included in this tour, although time is allowed for lunch at Sonoma Plaza. From $149 per person.

napa valley bus tour from san francisco

Napa and Sonoma Wine Valley Tour

For a tour that incorporates Napa Valley, as well as Sonoma, while still fitting three winery visits and tastings into the itinerary, there’s this eight-hour trip from San Francisco. There’s plenty to see during the journey, too, such as the Golden Gate Bridge. Learn about the region’s wine history, including how grapes were first brought here by Spanish missionaries, along the way. Lunch is not included but a stop will be made with time allotted at either Sonoma Plaza or The Marketplace in Napa. From $149 per person.

Muir Woods Redwood and Wine Country Tour

While there’s a great deal of rural beauty to be encountered in and around Napa Valley, the agrarian imprint of viticulture dominates the vistas with its neatly ordered lines of grapevines. The lines at Muir Woods National Monument, which you’ll visit on the way to wine country as part of this tour, are vertical and centuries old, belonging to the majestic redwood trees that the monument protects. Additionally, three Sonoma and Napa wineries are visited during the ten-hour trip. Please note that the Muir Wood entry fee is not included in the price. From $159 per person.

Small-Group Napa Valley Tour for Wine Lovers

For the very best of Napa Valley’s whimsy and history, there’s one tour which focuses exclusively on this celebrated Californian wine region. Among the three wineries you’ll visit is the Tuscan, medieval-style castle of Castello di Amorosa. Another stop is at Tamber Bey Winery, where you’ll try Merlot and Chardonnay wines. The estate also includes an equestrian ranch. Finally, there’s Carneros, where the vineyard has been producing wines for over a century. This tour runs from Sat to Thu each week. From $259 per person.

Driving to Napa from San Francisco

Getting from San Francisco to Napa can be as easy as renting a car and driving for an hour north to get to the Valley. The best route to take to Napa depends on traffic and recent accidents, but usually I-80 E to CA-20 N is the most straightforward and quickest drive up to the Napa Wine Country. However, you can also take the US-101 N to CA-37 E to CA-121 N to CA-29 N as a backup. Just keep in mind that there are going to be tolls no matter which route you choose. On weekends, that hour or so of driving can easily turn into two or more with traffic. If you’re only going up for the day, leave as early as possible. Most wineries open around 10am.

Local Transportation to Napa from San Francisco

If you’re on a budget, or simply don’t want to drive because you plan to be wine tasting all day, you can take advantage of the local transportation to Napa from San Francisco. The Amtrak service to Napa leaves from Emeryville, which is easily reached by BART or Uber, and takes anywhere from 2-3.5 hours to get to Napa. The cost starts at around $20 for a round trip .

Take the red N-train heading toward Richmond directly from SFO. Next, you’ll take BART all the way to El Cerrito Del Norte Station. From here you can take VINE Redwood Park & Ride 29 Express bus that will take you to Soscol Gateway Transit Center, the main transit hub of Napa. In total , this trip will cost you $20 and should take around 2.5-3 hours. Just note that the VINE 29 bus doesn’t run on weekends, so this option is only possible during the week. Alternatively, you can take BART from SFO to MacArthur Station, and take an Uber from there to the Emeryville Amtrak station to use the bus and train services mentioned above.

If you’re looking for an easy way to get to Napa from San Francisco, and you want to explore Wine Country at your leisure, a chartered Napa bus tour is a good option. Local Napa Valley transportation

If you’re on more of a budget, you can take the local Napa Valley transportation to get around Napa City. But, you will be restricted mostly to the tasting rooms in and around the city that are near bus routes. The good news for those from the Bay Area is that you can use your Clipper Card. Otherwise, a one-way fare is $1.60. Using local transportation can be a good option to check out some of the non-wine related attractions around Napa. That being said, to get out into the country and the actual wineries, your best options are the above choices.

Planning a trip to Napa can be overwhelming with how big and popular the region is. But, we hope this guide gives you insight into the best ways to get to Napa from San Francisco ! • Travel Time: minimum 6 hours
  • Cost: varies

Are you celebrating a special occasion with a group? Perhaps planning a romantic getaway for two?

Or maybe you just really want to splurge on your day trip around the Wine Country?

Booking a private tour promises a complete chauffeured experience in a luxury car.

You can create your own itinerary or, better yet have them customize one for you.

Most private tours only come with a driver, but this wine tour from San Francisco includes a knowledgeable driver who can make your trip to the wine country that much better.

  • Travel Time : 1 hour
  • Cost : Gas + toll fee
  • Check Rates & Availability

If you want to get a rental car , driving from San Francisco to Napa Valley is considered the best way to travel to and around the wine country.

Not only is it the fastest but it gives you the most flexibility especially if you only plan on going for a day trip.

Remember to bring along a designated driver to fully enjoy your wine-tasting experience.

There are two options you can choose from when driving from SF to Napa, both involve bridges.

The most common and favorite option is heading north (Hwy 101) out of the city to the Golden Gate Bridge.

The other option is heading east (I-80) towards the Bay Bridge which will require a toll on Carquinez bridge.

Depending on the traffic, both routes will get you to Napa approximately around the same time.

By Car + Hire a Private Driver

  • Estimated Cost of Private Driver : $50+/hour minimum of 6 hours + gratuity, other fees

What’s better than driving to Napa? Hiring a local private driver that will drive you around and ease you the hassle of navigating between wineries so you can just sit back, relax, and enjoy your glass (or bottle) of wine.

If you don’t feel link joining one of the wine tours , then this is a wonderful option.

Private drivers are well-versed with Napa’s wine scene and can double as your guide so you actually get the flexibility of having your own transportation and the advantage of a private wine tour at a fraction of the cost.

You pay their service by the hour so you can just meet at your hotel or somewhere in Napa and let them take the wheel from there.

Here are some companies you might want to check out:

  • Napa Tour Expert
  • My Napa Valley Driver
  • Napa Designated Drivers
  • Cost : price starts at $70

Traveling from SF to Napa Valley via rideshare will roughly take around the same time as driving your own car which is about an hour, depending on traffic.

However, you have to take note that the fare price could just as easily surge from $70 to anywhere upwards of $200 depending on the time and other traffic conditions.

Besides that, your ride will only take you to one destination so you’ll have to book another one or use another mode which will cause your transportation costs to pile up.

San Francisco to Napa By Ferry

  • Travel Time : 2.5 hours
  • Cost : $12.85
  • Suggested Route: SF Ferry Building Terminal > Vallejo Ferry Terminal > Vine Transit bus line 11 > Soscol Gateway Transit Center

ferry in san francisco

If you don’t mind taking a more leisurely yet scenic route from San Francisco to the wine country, the San Francisco/Vallejo Bay Ferry (see schedule ) has trips that leave as early as 6:35 AM on weekdays and 10:30 AM on weekends.

Make your way to the SF Ferry Building Terminal located at Mission Street (Gate E) then ride the ferry for about an hour to Vallejo Ferry Terminal.

From here, you can just walk to the Vallejo Transit Center and ride Bus line 11 to the Soscol Gateway Transit Center in downtown Napa.

Depending on the time of the year you plan to visit Napa , this ferry ride can be a little chilly, so make sure to bring some layers.

By BART + Vine Transit Bus (Weekdays Only)

  • Travel Time : 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Cost : $5 + $5.50 = $10.50
  • Suggested Route: BART to El Cerrito del Norte Station > Vine Transit bus line 29 > Soscol Gateway Transit Center

Another form of transportation from SF to Napa is by taking the BART. Make your way to El Cerrito del Norte Station by taking the Richmond line on the BART.

Head southwest of the station towards the Vine Transit Bus Stop and ride Bus 29 to Soscol Gateway Transit Center in Downtown Napa near Oxbow market.

The bus ride would usually take about 50 minutes during light traffic. For a total of $10.50 each way per person, this is the cheapest way to get to Napa from San Francisco.

Note: This method is only applicable for weekday trips to Napa.

SF to Napa By Train (Amtrak)

  • Travel Time : 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Suggested Route: Amtrak Bus from SF > Emeryville Amtrak Station (with a transfer to Martinez) > Napa Soscol Gateway Transit Center

Traveling to Napa from San Francisco by train via Amtrak service will require you to ride the Amtrak Thruway Connector bus that departs from the bus stop outside of this Chase Bank in downtown SF.

Yes, there are no Amtrak train stations in San Francisco. The bus will take you to Emery ville Amtrak Station where you can board the train to Martinez.

From Martinez Station, ride the Amtrak Thruway Connector bus that will take you to Napa Soscol Gateway Transit Center .

This method takes the longest and involves quite a lot of transfers that might not be practical for a day trip to Napa but would work if you plan on staying in the area for more than a day.

How to Get Around Napa without a Car

As it’s not that difficult to travel from San Francisco to Downtown Napa via public transport, there are several ways you can actually get around the area that don’t involve you personally having your own vehicle.

Booking an Uber/Lyft, bike rental, Napa Valley Trolley, and Napa Valley Wine Train are some of the most preferred options.

However, if you plan to visit Sonoma as well , it will be tricky to get around if you don’t have a car.

If rideshare service is your preferred mode of transport, you have to carefully plan your itinerary.

A 5-mile drive would cost you anywhere between $15-$20, so visiting wineries that are close to each other would be your best option to cut costs.

This might be your cheapest option if splitting with a group, although this option is not the most reliable .

You’ll have to consider the waiting time for your ride when booking specific wine-tasting schedules so you don’t end up arriving late.

Bike Rental

For fans of both wine and the outdoors, renting a bike would definitely add up to a more memorable California Wine Country experience.

You can ride the famous Napa Valley Vine Trail and go on a self-guided tour, or avail of a guided bike tour which comes highly recommended.

This highly-rated full day tour involves a stop at two wineries and they’ve recently switched to E-bikes for an even easier and smoother experience.

This bike rental company also offers E-bike rentals and tours as well as delivery to your accommodation (additional cost). Bike rentals can cost anywhere between $38-$130.

Napa Valley Trolley

The Napa Valley Trolley is an open-air winery tour aboard a replica of the historic San Francisco cable cars.

This guided tour starts and ends at the Oxbow Public Market downtown and takes its guests around to see Napa’s beautiful sights as well as visit three family-owned wineries for wine tasting sessions. Lunch at Ottimo Napa Valley is included in the tour.

Here are 5 fun stops between Sacramento and San Francisco to hit on your next road trip

I f you have some time to spare on your drive from Sacramento to San Francisco, consider taking a stop and exploring more of Northern California.

Cities around the region have their own culture, history, food and fun. Here are several detours you can take, depending on your route:

Downtown Napa

If you’re taking Interstate 80 West, you’ll hit the Napa area, known for its wineries, hilltop views and restaurants.

There’s a downtown area, where you can find everything from quick bites to international cuisines and dishes prepared by Michelin-starred chefs. Dining options include fusion Japanese food at Hal Yamashita, a bistro at Grace’s Table — which has a Michelin Bib Gourmand — or Italian at Pasta Prego.

You can also shop at local stores offering jewelry, clothes and other knick-knacks. If you need to unwind after your long drive, there are fine art galleries, spas and salons, too.

And for those not in the driver’s seat, you can enjoy Napa’s pride and joy — wine. There’s wine tasting rooms in downtown, as well as breweries and bars.

Total travel time: According to Google Maps, adding a stop at downtown Napa from downtown Sacramento to San Francisco will result in a total travel time of about 2 hours and 8 minutes. The route is 111 miles. Please note that travel times may change due to traffic and road delays.

Sonoma, about 67 miles on Interstate 80 from Sacramento, is also known for its wine — locals will tell you it’s more relaxed and less touristy than its neighboring Napa Valley.

Depending on how far into Sonoma County you’re willing to go, you can choose from a handful activities , including vineyard walking tours, garden tours, hot air balloons and biking.

Sonoma has a rich history which is commemorated by landmarks throughout the Sonoma Plaza . There, you can see Mission San Francisco Solano, Sonoma Barracks which was formerly a military post for U.S. soldiers and The Blue Wing Inn.

If you’re looking for a snack for your road trip, Sonoma offers picturesque dining, farm-to-table options and experiences, such as food tours.

Total travel time: Adding a stop at Sonoma Plaza from downtown Sacramento to San Francisco will make the entire trip about 2 hours and 19 minutes, and 112 miles.

If you’re taking Interstate 5 South, then you can make a stop at Lodi, the Central Valley’s wine country.

You can explore its handful of wineries , or take in the fresh air at one of Lodi’s parks and nature preserves , such as the Cosumnes River Preserve, Woodbridge Ecological Reserve or Grizzly Island Wildlife Area.

There are also museums, shops and full-service spas.

Total travel time: Adding a stop in Lodi from downtown Sacramento to San Francisco results in a drive about 2 hours and 16 minutes and a total of 120 miles.

If you’re hankering to learn some history, you can make a stop in the small town of Locke from Interstate 5, almost 30 miles from Sacramento.

The Locke Historic District is a National Historic Landmark, housing the largest remaining rural Chinatown in America. Built in 1915 by Chinese immigrants, Locke was home to 600 people . It had four restaurants, stores, a post office and two slaughterhouses, according to the Locke Foundation, among other buildings.

If you visit today , you can see some of the buildings as they were years ago. You can check out the town’s Chinese school and the Dai Loy Museum, or grab drinks at Al the Wop’s Saloon and at the Chinese Cultural Shop.

Total travel time: Adding a stop at Locke from downtown Sacramento to San Francisco results in a drive of about 1 hour and 56 minutes, and 104 miles.

Downtown Martinez

Located by the Delta and the southern shore of the Carquinez Strait is Martinez, one of the oldest towns in California. About 63 miles from Sacramento and 35 miles from San Francisco, you can take this detour off Interstate 80.

You can explore its charm and growth as a city in its downtown. In the area, you’ll find restaurants serving a variety of cuisines, shops and museums, including the The Cobra Experience, which houses classic cars.

Total travel time: Adding a stop at downtown Martinez from downtown Sacramento to San Francisco results in a 1 hour and 47 minute drive. It’s about 97 miles.
